Ex-leader of Japan doomsday cult involved in 1995 sarin subway attack executed: NHK
[OANN] The former leader of Aum, the Japanese doomsday cult that carried out a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995, was executed on Friday, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Chizuo Matsumoto, who went by the name Shoko Asahara, was the first of 13 scheduled to be hanged for the attacks. Announcements of the other hangings followed through the morning. The justice ministry confirmed the execution of the seven.

The Aum Shinri Kyo, or Aum Supreme Truth cult, which mixed Buddhist and Hindu meditation with apocalyptic teachings, staged a series of crimes including simultaneous sarin gas attacks on Tokyo subway trains during rush hour in March 1995. Sarin, a nerve gas, was originally developed by the Nazis.

The attacks left 13 dead and injured more than 6,000.

#1 Sure took them long enough; then again, like our system's any more expeditious...

#2 They sentence them to death but don't tell them when. Imagine every day, waking up wondering: "is today the day?"

#5 A bit more on the process from American Thinker:

First of all, as with these prisoners, they are allowed to cool their heels in a cell following the final disposition of the death penalty verdict. They are allowed months of time to contemplate their crimes and to know that death awaits, but with no idea at all when it will come.

Second, they await the opening of their cell doors in the wee hours of the morning, during the time that sleep normally is deepest, and a swift trip to the gallows as they rub sleep from their eyes. Every night, as sleep overtakes their consciousness, they are aware that their deepest sleep may be interrupted by the hangman

Bottom line (from the article): Ms. Iwata's (mum of one of the victims) peace of mind means more to me than Amnesty International's.

Also a reminder that you don't need to be a nation state *cough*russia*cough* to make organo-phosphate nerve agents.

#6 The Japanese sure have an interesting way of carrying out capital punishment. But 20+ years later? I'm sure Fatso Matsumoto had more than enough time to reflect.
