Pirates killed in ‘gunfight’ with RAB
[Dhaka Tribune] Two members of a Sundarbans-based pirate gang have been killed in an alleged shootout with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Barguna.

RAB 8 identified the two as Ataur Sardar, 25, and Rabiul Mali, 27. Ataur was the second-in-command of Hasan Bahini.

The alleged shootout took place in Padma village in Patharghata upazila on Monday morning. Six locally-made firearms, bullets and sharp weapons were reportedly recovered from the spot.

Md Surat Alam, company commander of RAB 8, told the media that their team raided Majherchar on Baleshwar River as part of their regular drive to combat pirates.

Members of the gang fired at RAB leading to a skirmish. After a while the pirate gang escaped the area leaving behind two bodies and firearms, he said.

Two single barrel guns, four pipe guns, 39 bullets, and explosives, along with sharp weapons were recovered.

The bodies have been handed over to Patharghata cop shoppe.

#1 Shutter Guns probably aren't waterproof enough for this riparian adventure.

#2 But they did have some rather pointy sticks! i.e. sharp weapons.

#3 No shutter guns but four pipe guns. What's the difference between a shutter gun and a pipe gun?

#4 The Ordnance Sergeant has issued the following: "The Shutter Gun's immaculate walnut veneer and bronze fittings could suffer corrosion from sea salt. Accordingly this national treasure has remained at HQ in its presentation case."

#5 Based on a photo that used to be on the net somewhere, a Shutter Gun appears to be a break-action .410 single-shot homemade pistol.

A pipe gun is probably a similar home-brew device, but possibly more like a single-shot long gun.

#7 Good to hear my RAB boys are getting some action. I wouldn't risk a priceless shuttergun on pirates either.

#8 Found the Shutter Gun photo.

Looks like the pirates didn't adhere to the good Sergeant's instructions, magpie.

#11 The shutter gun looks like a smooth bore pistol firing shotgun shells, single shot and single action. Did the bottom of the breech blow out, it would explain why the user didn't get away, hmmm? But how in the world do you reload it...interesting.
Thanks for the foto, Mullah! Googling for this usually results in minutes of futile effort.
