a former senior officer in the Paleostinian Authority police on suspicion of incitement and organizing protest rallies, police said Tuesday.
The suspect, who was not named by police, allegedly organized a demonstration on Friday in al-Ayda refugee camp, on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Bethlehem, and was seen carrying a banner with a swastika on it.
Israeli security forces were forced to break up the protest and arrested several rock throwers.
The man, in his 60s, served as a senior officer in the PA security forces until a few months ago. He was arrested Sunday at a checkpoint.
He is expected to be indicted Tuesday for incitement and organizing protests.
"This is one of he main instigators who we have been investigating for a number of months," a Border Police officer said.
Separately, in East Jerusalem two teens were arrested on suspicion of attacking two ultra-Orthodox Jews on Saturday.
The two, aged 18 and 19, were arrested and brought for questioning, and are accused of carrying out a racially motivated attack.
They are accused of confronting the two men who were walking early in the morning toward the Silwan pool just outside the Old City. The teens allegedly blocked their path, cursed at them in Arabic and Hebrew and eventually hit them before fleeing. The men did not require medical attention and were able to continue on their way.
Yusef a-Sharqawi, a retired major-general in the Paleostinian Security Forces, will be charged with incitement and orchestrating violent rioting, Ynet has learned, after he organized and participated in a rally while holding a sign bearing a swastika.
A-Sharqawi previously served in the Paleostinian National Security Forces. He was living in Leb prior to the Oslo Accords and then moved the West Bank after the agreements were signed. He was initially recruited into the Paleostinian Security Forces as a junior officer and moved up the ranks. He retired last year.
