Two Abu Sayyaf men arrested in anti-terror raid
[GULFTODAY.AE] A senior Philippine military officer on Monday confirmed the arrest of two Abu Sayyaf
...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder...

as Hajar Abdul Mubin alias Mheraiz, said to be a deputy of Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji operating on the island province of Basilan

in Mindanao.

Arevalo identified the other Abu Sayyaf member as Abraham Bin Ebong who, along with Mubin were arrested together with six Malaysian nationals in the anti-terrorism campaign.

Arevalo reported the suspects are detained at an undisclosed facility in Kuala Lumpur and are facing charges for committing security offences and violating Malaysian statutes.

"The arrest and detention of these individuals are a significant development on the Philippine government’s security cooperation with Malaysia and other neighboring countries to curb terrorism," Arevalo said.

"This includes attempts to recruit new members or to entice individuals to support terrorism or violent extremism," Arevalo said, referring to the reported move by ISIS holy warriors in the Middle East to expand their operations in Southeast Asia p-particularly in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The Abu Sayyaf has gained notoriety through a spate of kidnap-for-ransom cases that have often been marred by the beheading of their foreign and Filipino hostages.

The Philippine military also confirmed the involvement of the Abu Sayyaf in the siege of Marawi City on May 23 that prompted President Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte to impose martial law over the whole Mindanao.

The military said the Abu Sayyaf and another terrorist group headed by brothers Omar and Abdullah Maute have pledged allegiance to the ISIS holy warriors
