[Tolo News] Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
's security team is ambushed in Zurmat on Thursday as they were on their way to Urgoon ahead of Karzai's visit to offer condolences. â
Karzai's Deputy Spokesperson Faiq Wahidi told TOLOnew "this morning, the security convoy of the president of the Islamic republic of Afghanistan was on its way toward Paktia province when the Taliban ambushed the convoy in the suburb of Gardiz city, after the clash between the two sides, reinforcement dispatched to the area, currently the clash has ended and the security team is continuing on its way, so far we have recorded four injuries."
At least four Presidential Protection Service (PPS) guards are maimed as fighting still continues. Reinforcement has been dispatched.
There are reports of some PPS servicemen being captured by the Taliban in Zurmat district.
Sources says that the guards are either out or low on ammunition.
About two dozen PPS forces were driving to Urgoon as an advance team to prepare for President Karzai's visit.
Afghan National Army Maj. Gen. Mohammad Sharif Yaftali, commander of the 203rd "Thunder" Corps, rejected the Taliban ambush claims on Karzai's security team but confirmed the existence of the team in Zurmat district of Paktia province.
"They are not under any siege, they just lost their way and about 500 assistance forces have been sent to the area," Yaftali told TOLOnews.
According to reports the number of PPS security guards sent in advance is 50. The Taliban siege has been broken by Afghan cops.
Sources say there are causalities, but the exact number is not clear.
The Taliban have grabbed credit for the attack.
