MP Petition Gen Kayihura over the Arrest of Imams
|
Uganda: Kawempe North MP who also serves as the Uganda parliament Imam Latif Ssebaggala has petitioned the inspector general of police Kale Kayihura demanding him to correct the impression were the police spokesperson Judith Nabakoba arrested 10 Imams Monday accusing them for training terrorists.
According to Nabakoba, the ten Imams were arrested for training 30 children and are suspected to be involved in sending Muslim children to various countries for training as the Islamic extremists linked to terror.
He says that police statement may lead to many Moslem parents abandon sending their children to Islamic centers under fear of being misunderstood at the expense of their cherished Islamic norms and practice.

We must all fight terrorism in all its forms but we shouldn't at any one time encroach on people's freedom of worship which is guaranteed by our laws" The angry Latif noted
"As you carry out your mandate of keeping law and order, I implore you not to tarnish the image of Islam and the Muslims in general by attributing them to terrorist related activities. Memorization of Quran and teaching Islamic doctrines has never and will never be a basis for terrorism recruitment since it has been the practice for centuries" He added

He also said that the freedom of worship is clearly enshrined in our constitution and nowhere in our laws parents are barred from teaching their children principles and practices of their religion at tender ages and there are no gazette places for this system.
