#1 While the claim could not be verified independently, the announcement of his death appeared as a banner in a section of the Web site reserved for affiliated militant organizations, according to the Washington-based SITE Institute which monitors such sites.

"As the banner was posted ... by a webmaster of the forum, it seems as if the announcement of his death has been confirmed to the forum administrators," SITE said in an e-mail to news organizations.

I'd still like to see Ye Olde Head on a Stick... but it's promising.

#3 The man who some U.S. intelligence circles reportedly call al Qaeda's No. 3 has been killed in Pakistan, government officials confirm.

Pakistan, you say?

"It's significant," a Western intelligence official, who confirmed al Libi is believed to have been killed in this week's attack by an unmanned predator in North Waziristan, tells ABC News. "But it's not bin Laden and Zawahri. They do have an ability to regenerate and replace these guys."

So, you're confirming you believe he got wacked?
Pardon me for not holding my breath.

Libyan Abu Laith al Libi served as an al Qaeda field commander and spokesman. He was considered to be responsible for al Qaeda's military operations in Afghanistan, according to intelligence officials. He was believed to have been behind the suicide bombing that killed 23 people outside the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan last February when Vice President Dick Cheney was visiting inside.

In a 2006 audio interview al Libi said, "We showed the Muslims in Afghanistan that the mujahedeen in Afghanistan are able to organize a strong, orderly opposition that can stop the enemies in their tracks."

A jihadi Web site today carried a banner congratulating the Muslim worldwide community for the "martyrdom of Sheikh Abu Al-Laith Al-Libi."

Ok, they think he's dancing with his virgins. That sounds better.

News reports say al Libi was in his 40s.

#5 It was not immediately clear if Libi's death was linked to a suspected U.S. missile strike that killed up to 13 foreign militants in Pakistan's North Waziristan region this week. The attack had targeted second or third tier al Qaeda leaders, according to residents in the tribal area.

Tribesmen in the area had said a deputy of Libi, a senior al Qaeda leader, had been staying there and was among the dead, according to an intelligence official.

#11 BBC: Local officials in Pakistan said on Tuesday that 12 militants had been killed in a missile strike from "an unknown direction". Residents reported having seen a drone aircraft in the region before the attack. On Thursday, Pakistani intelligence officials said 13 people had died - seven Arabs and six Central Asians.

#14 ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - One of al-Qaida's top figures, Abu Laith al-Libi, has been killed in Pakistan, an Islamist Web site announced Thursday. Pakistani officials and residents said a dozen people, including seven Arabs, died in a missile strike in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border.

He was listed among the Americans' 12 most-wanted men with a bounty of $200,000 on his head.

Pakistani intelligence officials and residents said a missile struck a compound late Monday or early Tuesday about 2 1/2 miles from the Pakistani town of Mir Ali in North Waziristan, killing 12 people, including seven Arabs as well as Pakistanis and Central Asians. Residents said they could hear U.S. Predator drones flying in the area shortly before the explosion, which destroyed the compound. The Pakistani newspaper Dawn said the victims were buried in a local cemetery.

One intelligence official in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the bodies of those killed were badly mangled by the force of the explosion and it was difficult to identify them. The official estimated 12 people were killed, including Arabs, Turkomen from Central Asia and local Taliban members.

Wicked clever, Chenter Unimp736!! This dovetails nicely with yesterday's(?) article in the Asia Times Online (I think), quoting a Pakistani official complaining that U.S. Special Forces have been roaming the northern provinces killing Taliban and such.

#16 So, you're confirming you believe he got wacked?

I think TW has it right - the official won't confirm that the bastard is now decomposing due to a timely death in Pakistan. Where we certainly don't have troops and the President says we are not invited, no certainly not at all and he wasn't in on it and anyway he's in enough trouble with the ISI as it is ....
