#2 I'd say inflated by a factor of ten. Maybe a hundred.

#3 Choppers and tanks against local rebel infantry, and at night? Unlikely numbers unless the rebels were hobbled.

#4 They counted the number of bullets they came back with, subtracted that from the number they went out with and found out they were 400 short, hence the obvious conclusion that they killed 400 in battle.

#5 I think they counted all the dead people they found, added in all the dead cattle, goats* and donkeys. Came to 400.

* In East Timor, Australian troops called goats "Jordanian War Brides".
