#3 Sounds like a weird way to adopt an 8 year old.

The 12 year old says he just wants to be happy; clearly no one explained marriage to him.

#4 Sounds like a weird way to adopt an 8 year old.

But in that part of the world a common enough way to acquire a house slavey and potential income stream, while the girl's father sees no evil as he rids himself of a burden.

#5 Good Question g(r)omgoru - and the answer is -

Presto !

Aisha was six or seven years old when she was married to Muhammad and nine when the marriage was consummated.

#6 The correct answer was Mohommand was in his 50's and Aisha was 6-7 and the marriage was consummated when she was 8-9.

#8 I suspect we are looking at this in the wrong way. We consider marriage as uniting a man and a woman (let's not get started on the recent permutations!). In tribal societies, marriage is a way of uniting two tribes.

As a side note, tribal relations also account for the popularity of cousin marriage - if you marry a cousin on your father's side, you are not spreading the wealth around or incurring more obligations. And yes, there are certain genetic consequences.
