#2 Royal blood lines are usually corrupt, and adoption has a good chance of revitalizing them. However, you don't want to do it over several generations, or else it becomes a crap shoot.

This is what happened to the last kings of Hawaii. For some reason, they just couldn't procreate, so the various factions started electing new ones.
