#1 I thought, "What's the big deal; new aircraft, same old delivery system."

Then I caught this - The advanced boom will be able to transfer 900 gallons (3,400 liters) of fuel per minute to receiver aircraft, provide more responsive controls to the operator and has 2,600 fewer parts than previous booms.

I guess that's a plus....

#2 I'm struck that the old boom had at least 2601 parts in the first place. It's doesn't look that complicated.

IIRC the old boom was pretty much late 40s-early 50's technology with some upgrades, with mechanical actuators, steering mechanisms and fuel flow systems. With computer operated and controlled systems, the number of mechanical parts goes way down.
