The conversion began in 1998, when Nidal was 25, his father said. In an echo of his childhood trauma, it, too, involved death on the road. He and friends had been in Amman, drinking alcohol late one night, when their car crashed on the way home. Two people in the car were killed. Nidal suffered only minor injuries but grew introverted.
