#1 Thanks, Dar!

Well, one of the scoff-law truants was arrested. Not going in to do their duely elected duties is against the law. I can understand scoff-lawry - I speed - but jaysus! They are wasting tax dollars with their little vacation. I sincerely hope they do not get their $200 perdiem.

Carlos Uresti: (512) 463-0714
Mike Villareal: (512) 463-0532

#2 I can't imagine going into hiding across state borders just because I didn't want to go into the office... and still getting to keep my job. Anyone else would be fired! What a bunch of overpaid, underworked losers.

(I can empathize with the urge to ditch work though, I feel that way every Monday morning.)

#3 Is there any doubt now how childish this party has become? They had no problem with the UTTERLY STUPID redistricting plan that they put forward last time. Now that the GOP gets to 'paint the lines' things are suddenly unfair. Too bad they don't make them forfeit their seats because they neglected their duty. If I were OK I would toss them back over the border. WAAAA WAAAA WAAAA!

#4 My biggest issue with this is what it means for any party in the minority who doesn't like what the majority party is doing. It smacks of "everything was fine when we were in control, but now it's their turn so we're taking our ball and going home."

Is this acceptable behavior for elected officials in our republic? If you choose to play the game then decide you don't like the rules, is crossing state lines and hiding out like a criminal responsible behavior? Or is this another form of the fillibuster?

It seems to me Texas and many other states will now need to enact additional legislation regarding voluntary absence from legislative proceedings, since the quorum rule by itself is so easily exploited.

#5 Will I end up like the Dixie Chicks if I say I am ashamed these quackenhuts are from my home state? No, different situation entirely. *sigh* I agree, Dar. May I quote you in my letter to my elected representatives? If they bother to show up to work to read it, that is?

#6 Dar, it's not any party in the minority doing this, it's the Democrats. And it's not the first time they've done it here in Texas either. They keep this up, and we won't have to worry about getting a quorum after the next election.

#7 Tadderly: You're welcome to quote whatever you like of mine, although I'm sure you could word what you want to say better than I in my spittle-filled rants! :-)

Steve: Tempted as I am, I don't want to get into finger-pointing at the Dems until I know more about the situation. Just like Byrd's hypocritical rants about Bush's "photo op"--never mind Clinton and Leahy's similar poses--I don't know if there are any precedents to this. As inclined as I am to side with the right on most issues, neither side can claim absolute moral superiority.

Although I have to agree that the Republicans will have no problems getting a quorum after the next election at this rate!

#9 Oh great, now that they don't have a majority, they have to vote anyway???

Geez, the Democrats handle being the minority party so WELL, it is gratifying how they suck it up and become a member of the team..........NOT

If Tom Frist gets the rules changed for cloture on debate on the judicial nominations, look for the clowns on the left to use this stunt to avoid confirming Estrada and Owens.

As Hugh Hewitt says, that sound you hear is the Democrats digging themselves, deeper and deeper into a hole with the american public.

#10 What we're seeing in Texas and what we're seeing in the United States Senate is one party putting party policies above the business they were elected to carry out. In my book, this would be considered treason, and the whole kit and caboodle strung up from light poles in the biggest city in Texas, and in Washington, DC. Maybe then people who swear an oath will know that breaking it has consequences. Until that happens, our government will continue to grind downhill into the toilet.

#11 Guys, I'm from England, so excuse the ignorance. But my first thought was "what a fantastic country!" - people legally elected leg it into another jurisdiction to avoid voting on issues they don't like, so the head honcho sends a possee after them!

I could see this being made into a movie - 'Smokie and the Bandit IV' maybe?

Of course, if you *live* in Texas and actually want the buggers to do what they've been elected to do ... not so good.
