#1 It's actually worse than this. The world medical community has (rightly) been on crusades to eliminate smallpox (done), polio (almost done), and tuberculosis (some progress). A similar campaign to eliminate malaria has foundered, because to do so you have to eliminate the mosquitoes (Anopheles stephensi, Anopheles gambiae, etc) that serves as the reservoir. But our good leftist friends think that it is some sort of environmental sacrilege to eradicate an "innocent" species just to alleviate human suffering. So it's still drugs and mosquito nets, which are expensive and only partially effective, instead of spraying the little suckers out of existence.

#2 Quite right, Fred. Most of the DDT used was for agricultural purposes, not this. We could have continued the spraying for mosquitos and prevented this, and, oh, yeah, West Nile, and the dengue fever epidemic in Hawaii and...
