#1 It would be hard to argue that Mexican was a slur in New Mexico. Certainly what she said was quite a bit less controversial than Harry Reid's original take on Obama or Jesse Jackson's anti-semetic name for NYC. Liberals are a forgiving bunch as long as you prove useful.

#2 So its a racial slur to call someone of Mexican origin a "Mexican?"

Does that mean calling a Cuban a Cuban a slur?

How about France? I guess as long as you don't call them Frogs, its okay.

So Mick, Wop, Guinea, Pineapple, Kike, all go on the dust bin of history.

I wonder if they will ever retire cracker, gringo, or whitey?

#3 Mystic, I was once cautioned against racism for saying I don't care for Mexican food.

#4 #1, actually it is in New Mexico. The indigenous population proudly refer to themselves as Spanish.

#6 The way they insist on calling bland dishes "hot" annoys me.

#7 From, you''ve been eating in some bad Mexican restaurants. A good Mexican restaurant has very good food that's not necessarily hot but is anything but bland.

#8 As heard in a mall Restaurante:
"I'll have uno 'Plato Gigante'
(Whatever that means),
With refried Sysco beans,
And a side of mild salsa picante."

#10  New Mexico's ethnic boundaries are beyond comprehension to outsiders. Blacks can even be considered "Anglos", since the other categories are limited to being Spanish or some kind of Indian.
The "slur" has more to do with how far back the governor's ancestry within New Mexico goes. See Wiki: On September 9, 2011, Martinez stated she did not know whether her paternal grandparents immigrated to the country illegally.
Thorough research revealed that they appeared to have followed the rules at the time and that she is a great-granddaughter of Mexican Revolutionary General Toribio Ortega.
On November 14, 2011, Martinez visited Cuchillo Parado, Mexico, for a celebration in honor of her great grandfather, "a revolutionary general who led a band of supporters credited as being the first to take up arms on November 14, 1910, against a decades-long dictator".

That's the thing about New Mexico. Your ancestors could have settled there in 1850, and you're treated as if you just stepped off the bus.

#12 Being in New Mexico since 1850 IS just stepping off the bus in New Mexico...

Just ask the Acoma about 'newbie' (1598) Don Juan de Onate. His statues tend to come up missing a foot every couple of years.
