Psalm 666: The State Is My Shepherd, I Shall Not Want
The State is my shepherd,

I shall not want.

It makes me lie down in federally owned pastures.

It leads me beside quiet waters in banned fishing areas.

It restores my soul through its control.

It guides me in the path of dependency for its namesake.

Even though our nation plunges into the valley of the shadow of debt,

I will fear no evil,

For Barack will be with me.

The Affordable Care Act and food stamps,

They comfort me.

You prepare a table of Michelle Obama approved foods before me in the presence of my Conservative and Libertarian enemies.

You anoint my head with hemp oil;

My government regulated 16-ounce cup overflows.

Surely mediocrity and an entitlement mentality will follow me

All the days of my life,

And I will dwell in a low-rent HUD home forever and ever.

Amen.

India-Pakistan
Drone kills top Talibunny Mullah Nazir
An American drone strike killed a key Taliban commander, his deputy and eight others in northwest Pakistan, according to intelligence sources and tribal leaders on Thursday.

Maulvi Nazir Wazir, also known as Mullah "Lucky" Nazir, was killed Wednesday night when missiles struck a mud house in South Waziristan, according to the sources. He had survived at least one previous drone attack and was injured weeks earlier in a bomb attack believed to have been launched by Taliban rivals.

His key commanders and his deputy, Ratta Khan, were also killed in the attack at Angoor Adda, near the provincial capital of Wana.
So we got the number 2 and a whole bunch of number 3s? Most excellent!
Nazir had expelled foreign militants from his area, attacked US forces in Afghanistan and had signed non-aggression pacts with the Pakistani military in 2007 in 2009. That put him at odds with other Pakistan Taliban commanders, but earned him a reputation as a "good" Taliban among some in the Pakistan military.
But not among the American military...
Nazir's successor was announced before a crowd of thousands at his funeral, said a witness. People will be waiting to see if number 4 fellow Wazir tribesman Salahud Din Ayubi continues with Nazir's policies.

The military has a large base in Wana, where Nazir and his men were based. Nazir presided over an uneasy peace between the militants and the army there, but the truce was endangered by the military's alliance with the United States and drone strikes, a military officer said recently.
The only thing holding it together was the fact that if they split they couldn't use the PX anymore...
He said, "The (drone) program is making things very difficult for us. Nazir is the sole remaining major militant leader willing to be an ally. If he decides to side with (Pakistan Taliban leader) Hakimullah, thousands of fighters will come to the frontlines against the Pakistani military. It is in our interest to keep him neutral, if not on our side, because then we can direct our resources against anti-state militants with much greater efficiency."
Something that the mighty Pak army has been doing so well...

#2  More reasons to dislike Nazir:

"In June 2012, Nazir banned polio vaccinations in his areas, and claimed that the program is being used by the US to gather intelligence and conduct drone strikes in the tribal areas. His action followed that of Hafiz Gul Bahadar, who shut down the program in North Waziristan earlier that month." - Long War Journal

#2  For the propgressives on the left, they cannot perceive that their vision moving the nation from equality of opportunity to equality of outcome, with special benefits for the favored races, will have true resistance. For Hitler it was the Jews, for Champ it is not white men, race reasoning has become mainstream. As there is violent reaction, the sides will form, and the effort to retain the Presidency as a minority holding will beome more and more obvious. Think I'm kidding, watch Michelle's public behavior and see for yourself. The pandering to thier base will get more and more generous and obvious. God save the Republic

#3  Champ got slightly more than half of the votes and some of those were most likely not legitimate. There were as many people who didn't vote as there were voters who voted for Champ, Romney, and a handful of other candidates. Champ hardly won a mandate. Possibly there were more people who didn't vote because they didn't like either candidate. The Progressives are playing with fire and don't seem to know what they could unleash. We had a revolution over two hundred years ago over such things as are going on now.

'N' leaders see conspiracy against party
[Dawn] Pakistain Mohammedan League-Nawaz leaders have said that conspiracies are being hatched against the party to prevent it from coming into power. They have also claimed that the PML-N is the only political party which could steer the country out of the present crises.

The PML-N leaders, including Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, provincial president Pir Sabir Shah, central leader Khawaja Mohammad Khan Hoti, expressed these views at a public meeting at Parano Park area here on Tuesday.

Mr Jhagra said that national institutions and economy were on the verge of collapse due to wrong policies and poor governance system. He alleged that the rulers had preferred their interests to national interests and adopted the policy of collecting money through every possible illegal means. He said that the steps being taken by the judiciary was the only ray of hope for the country.

The party's provincial president claimed that intelligence agencies had been supporting PTI chief Imran Khan

That's why they build 'em in that part of the world.
[Dawn] Unknown myrmidons went kaboom! two home-made bombs at boys' primary school in Dallokhel village here late on Monday night, damaging a portion of its boundary wall.

An official said that the bombs weighed 2.5 kg each and the watchman who was present in the school building remained unhurt. Officials of law-enforcement agencies have launched a search operation in the area following the incident. In another such incident the same night, unknown myrmidons attacked a house with a hand grenade in Abakhel village.

"The hand grenade went kaboom! in a compound of the house of one Shad Nabi," an official said, adding that the blast did not cause any human or property loss.

Meanwhile,

The instructions to this effect have been delivered to headmasters in Meenakhel, Tajazai, Serai Gambila, Tattarkhel, Gandi Khankhel and Kala Manjiwala circles, said an official. He said that officials of police and education departments would also pay visits to schools at night time to check presence of watchmen on duty.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Fossil Older Than Oxygen on Earth Found in Australia
[US NEWS] Researchers have found fossils of bacteria that are nearly 3.5 billion years old, believed to be the oldest visible fossils ever uncovered.
Older than dirt, in fact...
The fossils, found in northwest Australia's Pilbara region, are from a time before oxygen existed on Earth and are from just one billion years after Earth's formation, according to Old Dominion University's Nora Noffke, one of the researchers who worked on the project.

The fossils are imprints found on sandstone that was formed when microbes interacted with rock sediment. Scientists have discovered older rocks, but Noffke says those rocks have eroded to the point where traces of life are all but impossible to find.

"I can confidently say the structures we're working on cannot be found on older rocks--until now, there has been nothing that is this well preserved," Noffke says. "There are some that are much older, but they experience metamorphosis--anything that's on them has been overprinted and it's difficult to reconstruct what was there."

The ancient microbes likely fed on sulfur,
"Mmmm! Brimstone! My favorite!"
as many bacterial organisms do today. The discovery could spur further searches for life on Mars and other places where sedimentary rock is more well-preserved than on Earth. The Mars Curiosity Rover currently has instruments on it to look for similar fossils, she says.

Investigation After Stripper Falls During Lap Dance
[FOX8] A woman was seriously injured after a bizarre incident inside a local strip club early Wednesday morning.
How can any incident that might happen in a strip club be termed 'bizarre'?
It happened at Christie's Caberet in The Flats, just after 1 a.m.

According to police, 22-year-old Lauren Block, of Richmond Heights, was reportedly on the second floor of the club when she went over the balcony and landed on her head. Police said they were first told the woman had been thrown over the balcony, but once they arrived, they realized it was an accident.

According to a report from Cleveland police, a witness said he was getting a lap dance from Block on the second floor of the club when something went terribly wrong.

The reporting officer said this of the incident: "(The witness) stated that (the dancer) grabbed the rail, as he was facing away from the balcony, and she tried to complete some sort of jump/dance move, and accidentally went head first over the rail."

Block reportedly fell 15 feet and suffered "major head trauma."

She was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition.

Police said there is no further investigation on their side, because it appears to have been a horrible accident.

However, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating.
Notice that last sentence is not highlighted in any color. We really don't make this stuff up.

Nour Party remains our only political arm: Salafist Calling
[Al Ahram] Despite mass resignations, the Salafist Calling confirmed in a statement released Monday that the Salafist Nour Party remains its only political arm.

"A movement cannot support more than one political party at the same time...the Nour Party is the Salafist Calling's only political arm," the statement read.

The movement has called on all of its members to join and support the party, which has been mired in internal disputes.

The Salafist Calling is Egypt's largest and most influential Salafist movement and includes a number of the country's most prominent preachers.

The statement comes after former head of the Nour Party Emadeddin Abdel-Gafour officially resigned his post as party chairman last week and announced his plans to launch a new political party, Al-Watan (Homeland).

Other members including former spokesperson Yosri Hamad also resigned and announced they were set to join the new party.

The conflict within the party is reportedly between Abdel-Ghafour's front and followers of influential holy man Yasser El-Borhami, one of the founders of the Salafist Calling, a movement that spawned the Nour Party in 2011.

The supreme committee of the Nour Party, which espouses an ultra-conservative brand of Islam, withdrew confidence from Abdel-Ghafour earlier in October.

Abdel-Ghafour, however, refused to step down
...Hell no! The money's too good!...

The Salafist Calling, led by El-Borhami, stood by members of the party's supreme committee against party chairman.

Abdel-Ghafour and his supporters -- known within the party as the 'Reformist Front' -- retaliated by calling for the dismissal of the supreme committee via the party's official Twitter account.

The Nour Party is the most influential Salafist party in Egypt. It led a coalition of Islamist political parties that won 127 seats in the now dissolved lower house of parliament.

China-Japan-Koreas
Congress Passes Welfare Act for N. Korean Children
Might as well, everyone else except ordinary Americans is getting a slice of Uncle Sugar's pie...
The U.S. Congress on Tuesday passed a bill promoting the welfare and human rights of North Korean children in third countries. A full session of the House of Representatives unanimously passed the North Korean Child Welfare Act of 2012.
Because we're rolling in dough, can't spend it fast enough to keep up with it...
The bill urges the U.S. government to facilitate protection of North Korean children in China and other countries by reuniting them with their families or through adoption. It requires the secretary of state to "brief appropriate congressional committees on efforts to advocate for and develop a strategy to provide assistance in the best interest of these children." It calls for resolving "issues of statelessness of North Koreans" in foreign countries.

The bill also calls on the U.S. government to carry out a pilot project in cooperation with the South Korean government to support family reunions for such children.

Earlier on Dec. 28 the U.S. Senate passed the bill submitted from the House. It will come into effect once President Barack Obama signs it.

By contrast, South Korea has enacted no law related to the North Korean people's human rights. Bills were submitted to the 17th and 18th National Assembly but their passage was blocked by the opposition.

Local media claim that suspect, tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
several weeks ago, was member of Israeli spy network

Yemeni media reported Wednesday that an Israeli citizen has been arrested in the country on suspicion he was a member of an Israeli spy network.

According to reports, the man was arrested in the southern province of Ta'izz several weeks ago and goes by two names: Abdullah Muhsan al-Himi al-Siari and Abraham al-Deri.

The suspect was taken for questioning in Aden. A security source added that he was enjugged
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
several weeks ago and was recently moved to a different holding facility.

According to Yemeni media, this is the first time an Israeli citizen has been arrested in the country. In 2009, a court sentenced a local man to death after he was convicted of spying for Israel. A different court sentenced two other citizens to 3 and 5 years in prison for similar charges.

Last week, Israeli citizen Andre Pshenichnikov, 25, was arrested in Taba after entering Egypt without a passport. He was taken in for questioning on suspicion of espionage.

According to reports in Egypt he entered the country through the mountainous area which borders on the Taba hotel, where he was caught. He is suspected of photographing security facilities in Taba.

Egypt's Brotherhood says UAE arrests unfounded
[REUTERS] Egypt's Moslem Brüderbund said on Wednesday some of its members had been wrongfully placed in durance vile
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in United Arab Emirates (UAE) on allegations of helping to train local Islamists in subversion tactics.

"I know 11 people were tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
. I know that some of them are from the Brotherhood," said Mahmoud Ghozlan, a Brotherhood front man in Cairo. "The claim that they are a cell seeking to destabilize the country is devoid of truth."

The arrests came to light on Tuesday when a UAE newspaper reported the authorities had arrested an "Egyptian Moslem Brüderbund cell", citing an unnamed source.

The oil-rich UAE, which has long voiced distrust of the Moslem Brüderbund that helped propel Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi to power this year, arrested about 60 Islamists last month, accusing them of being linked to the Egyptian group and plotting to undermine governments in the Gulf region.

In what appeared to be an effort to ease tensions, Egypt's intelligence chief, General Mohamed Shehata, headed to the UAE for talks, airport officials said.

An aide to the Egyptian president also handed over a message from Mursi to UAE's president, a statement from the Egyptian presidency said, without giving details.

"We are in contact with the authorities there and will see what will happen in the next period," Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr was quoted as saying by the state news agency.

The son of one of the arrested Egyptians said in Cairo that his father, Ali Sonbol, is a medical doctor and is not involved in political activities.

"They didn't say where they were taking him and what were the charges," Ahmed Sonbol told Rooters. "The Egyptian embassy only assured us that he was detained by UAE authorities and he is well."

Russian diplomat pays for language problem
[Dawn] Refusal by a Russian diplomat to pay fine for a traffic violation, as he could not understand English spoken by the traffic warden, landed him at Kohsar cop shoppe.

He was however released after the embassy officials reached the cop shoppe and paid the fine.
"None o' that 'diplomatic immunity' crap! Pay up or you can rot in there with Mahmoud!"
"Bozhe moi! What's that he's got in his hand... Ewwww! Here! Take it all!"

Traffic officials checking speed violations at Jinnah Avenue on Tuesday afternoon spotted a speeding vehicle, which was intercepted. The vehicle belonged to a Russian diplomat.
"Da, da! Is offitsialny diplo avtomobile!"
A traffic warden seeing that the occupant of the vehicle was a foreigner, tried communicating with him in English. But the Russian diplomat retorted in Russian and refused to pay the fine for the traffic violation.
"Nyet, nyet! Rooskie diplos don't do shakedowns!"
An argument ensued in two different languages, eventually leading both parties to the cop shoppe.
"Hey! Leggo!"
At the cop shoppe, the Russian diplomat introduced himself as an employee of the Russian embassy.

Later he contacted his embassy officials who reached the cop shoppe and paid the baksheesh fine.

Later the police released the diplomat along with the official car.

Peshawar unrest: Afghans seen as main source of trouble
[Dawn] In light of the frequent acts of terrorism, especially suicide kabooms, in Qissa Khwani Bazaar and adjoining streets, Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
coppers manning the old city areas consider Afghan nationals the main problem for them, saying these foreigners move from one place to another very easily but leave no trace.

They are firmly of the opinion that an operation should be carried out in the area from GT Road to City Circular Road without delay to register tenants and catch rogue elements.

During a visit by Dawn to these areas on Tuesday, police officials expressed ignorance about directives from their bosses about registration of tenants in rented buildings. They also said they had no record of the occupants of these structures.

Police have time and again claimed to launch a campaign for registration of all tenants in the city and force property dealers to avoid provision of rented buildings without proper permission from the local police.

Also, they had reportedly decided that only families would be allowed to get houses in the residential population. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
in the main city areas, police have no record of tenants. The people can easily get a building on rent with police knowing nothing about them.

"The only solution to overcome the increasing terrorist acts is to carry out a thorough and concentrated operation and register tenants," police officials said, suggesting that Afghan nationals be stopped from entering the city and renting houses. The cop shoppes located inside the city have no record about the people living in the rented houses, plazas and flats.

They said police had to beef up security only during Muharram to avert any eventuality, adding that police had to visit different hotels, plazas to check the suspected people on temporary basis.

According to the officials, 18 kabooms have taken place in the city areas including Qissa Khwani but till now it could not be ascertained as to who facilitated the jacket wallahs and how accurately they stroke their targets.

Syria Air Strike Hits Gas Station, Dozens Killed
[VOA News] Opposition activists in Syria say government warplanes bombed a gasoline station near Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
on Wednesday, reportedly killing dozens of people as they waited for fuel.

The gasoline station was a legitimate target because it was "close to an air defense base under rebel siege."
Amateur video showed bystanders running after the aerial assault in the Damascus suburb of Meliha. Young men clawed through twisted pieces of metal to pull victims from the rubble.

One witness told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that a government warplane fired a single missile into the station.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that dozens of people were killed or maimed when a long line of vehicles waiting for fuel was attacked from the air.

A pro-government journalist reported that the gasoline station was a legitimate target because it was "close to an air defense base under rebel siege." He said that rebels were seen "carrying shoulder-fired missiles in the area."

Peter King: Halt donations to House GOP
[POLITICO] New York Republican Rep. Peter King
...U.S. Representative for New York's 3rd (central Long Island) congressional district, serving since 1993. He is of the Publican persuasion and is known for his active support for the IRA Irish republican movement...
went to war with his Republican colleagues on Wednesday after leaders spiked a Hurricane Sandy relief bill, calling on New Yorkers to stop all donations to GOP House members.

"These Republicans have no problem finding New York when they're out raising millions of dollars," King said on Fox News. "They're in New York all the time filling their pockets with money from New Yorkers. I'm saying right now, anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny to Congressional Republicans is out of their minds. Because what they did last night was put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans. It was an absolute disgrace."

#7  IMO this "Fiscal Cliff" brouhaha is the US equivalent of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution in Tsarist Russia, where the DemoLeft + anti-US Amer Globalists are the Bolsheviks + the GOP-Right + pro-US Globalists are the Mensheviks, AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MENSHEVIKS.

The Leftists-Communists-Globalists are getting everything they want - SOON THEY WILL "PURGE" THE ALLEGED "FASCISTS" = RIGHTIST-NATIONALISTS + PRO-US GLOBALISTS.

> The Bolsheviks got rid of the Mensheviks.
> The Commies will get rid of the Fascists/Nationalist-Globalists.

To paraph "RAISING ARIZONA" > "OKAY THEN"!

AFAIC also Year "2014" + formal US State-Local Govt secession frm Washington = akin to the WHITE-VS-RED RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR [inter-Socialist].

IN SUM, 2013-2014 NLT 2016 = end of Obama second POTUS term = THE GOP-RIGHT + ALIGNED NOW HAVE TO EXISTENTIALLY FIGHT FOR THEIR LIVES + -ISM(S) LEST THEY BE "PURGED" + DESTROYED.

Lawyers refuse to
defend accused in gang rape case
NEW DELHI - Lawyers at an Indian court hearing the case of a fatal gang rape which has shocked the nation said on Wednesday they would refuse to defend the men accused of taking part in the assault and murder.
Your clients may be despicable, but as lawyers it's your job to ensure the process works, even if deep down inside you want your clients to fry...
“We have decided that no lawyer will stand up to defend the rape accused as it would be immoral to defend the case,” Sanjay Kumar, a lawyer and a member of the Saket District Bar Council, said.

Kumar said the 2,500 advocates registered at the court have decided to “stay away” to ensure “speedy justice”, meaning the government would have to appoint lawyers for the defendants. Another lawyer at the court confirmed the boycott.

In 2008, Indian lawyers also refused to defend a gunman who took part in attacks on Mumbai which killed 166 people, leaving him with a government-appointed lawyer. He was deservedly executed in November last year.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the owner of the bus in which the 23-year-old woman was gang raped here December 16 night, police said on Tuesday. Dinesh Yadav has been booked for giving false information to the state transport department to get a registration certificate and permit for the bus, which was being used for ferrying school children, police said. “The residential proof submitted by Yadav was found false because he never resided at the mentioned address,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sindhu Pillai.

“Anant Gopal, the landlord of the property in north Delhi’s Burari, told us that Yadav never resided at his house. Yadav filed a false affidavit claiming that he was a resident of the given address,” said Pillai.

Besides the bus involved in the gang-rape crime, 10 other buses were registered in the name of Dinesh Yadav, police said.

Al Jazeera Acquires Current TV
Al Jazeera on Wednesday completed a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable channel that was founded by Al Gore and his business partners seven years ago.
Emphasis on 'low-rated', as in 'nobody's watching'...
Current will provide the pan-Arab news giant with something it has sought for years: a pathway into American living rooms. Current is available in about 60 million of the 100 million homes in the United States with cable or satellite service.
'Available' does not translate into 'viewed'...
Rather than simply use Current to distribute its English-language channel, called Al Jazeera English and based in Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera will create a new channel, called Al Jazeera America, based in New York.
It will cater to the progressive left and to jihadis, but I repeat myself...
Roughly 60 percent of the programming will be produced in the United States, while the remaining 40 percent will come from Al Jazeera English.
Oh boy: original programming! That's something different from CurrentTV...
Al Jazeera may absorb some Current TV staff members.
And you won't notice the difference...
But Current's schedule of shows will most likely be dissolved in the spring.
And you won't notice the difference...
"Al Jazeera is planning to invest significantly in building 'Al Jazeera America,' a network focused on international news for the American audience," the Current chief executive Joel Hyatt said in an e-mail to staffers on Wednesday evening. Referring to Mr. Gore, he said, "Al and I will both serve on the advisory board of Al Jazeera America, and we look forward to helping build an important news network."
Just like Current TV, by gum. This means of course that Al-Jizz is doomed, but if we can snatch some of Qatar's cash it'll be to the good. Wonder if we could set up a Rantburg channel?
The plan will bring Al Jazeera, which is financed by the government of Qatar, into closer competition with CNN and other news channels in the United States.
'Competition' has a different meaning in English than in Arabic...
I dunno if they can compete with CNN. Those Arabs are pretty shy about oral sex on national teevee.
For Al Jazeera, the acquisition is a coming-of-age moment. A decade ago, the Arabic-language channel was reviled by American politicians for showing video tapes and messages from al Qaeda members and sympathizers. Now it is acquiring an American channel.

"They really want to be able to compete for American viewers, and they have to find some way to get on," said Philip Seib, the director of the center on public diplomacy at the University of Southern California and the author of "The Al Jazeera Effect."
They're going to find it hard to get left of CNN...
Mr. Seib said access to Americans is important both for economic reasons, for the channel's advertisers, and for "the journalistic legitimacy of their venture."
Something Current TV didn't worry itself over...
To date, the country's cable and satellite distributors have been reluctant to carry Al Jazeera English. It is available in just a handful of cities, including New York and Washington. To change that, Al Jazeera has lobbied distributors, called for a letter-writing campaign by supporters and promoted its widely praised coverage of the Arab Spring.

Acquiring Current TV, and thus its distribution deals across the country, solves this dilemma for Al Jazeera, at least partially.
Until distributors dump them...
Current is hard to find on many cable lineups, and some analysts say it's at risk of being dropped by some companies because of low ratings, but it would give Al Jazeera a foothold on the country's cable and satellite service lineups. Then Al Jazeera could revamp the channel and promote it as a new American-based news source.
They might even give Fox competition for 'fair and balanced' news...
Representatives for Current TV and Al Jazeera did not immediately respond to requests for comment. There was no immediate word about the sale price.
How many goats?
Current was conceived in 2005 after Mr. Gore and another co-founder, Joel Hyatt, bought the small cable news channel Newsworld International. Current's owners, along with Mr. Gore and Mr. Hyatt, include several venture capital firms and two major distributors, Comcast and DirecTV. After several years of constant suck in obscurity showing viewer-submitted videos and documentaries,
Always a ratings winner...
Current tacked to the left in 2011 with the hiring of MSNBC's Keith 'Raving Lunatic' Olbermann.
At which point their ratings declined...
A year later, Mr. Olbermann was fired,
Keif forgot that you can only stage a temper tantrum in the TV news biz when you have viewers...
but a liberal minded channel made in his image remained.
Talk about a legacy. Keif is gone but the failure lives on...
The channel now simulcasts liberal radio shows in the morning
Radio shows? I thought they were a TV channel...
and features news-talk shows in the evening by Joy Behar, Eliot Spitzer, Jennifer Granholm and others.
Both viewers are going to be so upset when Al-Jizz changes the programming. If they notice...
None of the shows have drawn significant audiences. On a typical night in 2012, about 42,000 people were watching the channel, according to Nielsen.
"And that's just in the USA!"
Mr. Spitzer quipped to a reporter from Mediabistro last month, "Nobody's watching, but I'm having a great time."
It does make you wonder what the business model is...
At the end of October, Current confirmed that it was considering killing selling itself.
Smart business guys, Hyatt and Gore. Usually you do an IPO when things are going good...
Mr. Hyatt said in a statement at the time, "Current has been approached many times by media companies interested in acquiring our company. This year alone, we have had three inquiries. As a consequence, we thought it might be useful to engage expertise to help us evaluate our strategic options."
They should have sold before the end of 2012, the tax losses would have been worth more...
The New York Times Company mulled a bid for the channel, but decided not to do so.
Oh the possibilities...
They're already tanking...
In recent months, uncertainty has plagued the staff of Current,
Wondering if 99 weeks of unemployment will be long enough to get the stench off their resumes...
which is based in San Francisco. Mr. Spitzer, the 8 p.m. host, remarked that someone needed to buy the channel. Ms. Granholm, the 9 p.m. host, renewed her contract for just three months.
"I can't do more than three months! I'm looking at a good position in the food service industry! Does this net make my hair look fat?"
Plans for new programming at other hours have stalled. After the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., the channel replayed the gun documentary "Bowling for Columbine" dozens of times.
Based on the number of viewers, Michael Moore made a buck ninety-nine in royalties...
Al Jazeera intends to open new bureaus across the United States to support the American programming. The news operation currently has bureaus in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago.

#15  As Instapundit says

AL JAZEERA BUYS CURRENT TV. “Mr. Gore and his partners were eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31, lest it be subject to higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1.”

#16  Beavis' link is comedic gold:
the decision to go with the Middle Easter outlet came, in part, because, “al-Jazeera was founded with the same goals we had for Current.”

And then we have the tax consequences of this:
Gore was reportedly eager to complete the deal by Dec. 31 in order to avoid higher tax rates that took effect on Jan. 1. Unfortunately for Gore, the deal wasn’t signed until Wednesday, however.

Given his ecstacy at Comrade Barack's election, I am shocked, SHOCKED that this "fat cat" would try to pay less than his "fair share" of taxes!

Al Gore, you didn't build that! Of course you haven't built anything, but that's another topic.

Despite Democratic objections, the bill passed 287 to 129, with 55 Democrats voting with Republicans to approve the measure.
Districts aren't that safe, are they?
They know Harry Reid's got their backs in the Senate...
House Democrats charged that the vote to freeze salaries was intended to provide political cover for conservative Republicans planning to vote against the fiscal cliff bill passed early Tuesday by the Senate.
There's no political cover at the bottom of a crater.
The fiscal cliff deal, passed with 89 votes in the Senate, includes language that would block a 0.5 percent cost of living pay increase for politicians, reversing parts of an executive order Obama issued last week -- because Congress had yet to set the federal government's pay scale for 2013.
Whoa! Reversed an imperial decree, did they? Took a bunch of guts.
Voting against the fiscal cliff plan might leave some House Republicans open to charges by future political opponents that they voted to give themselves a raise, or didn't vote to block a congressional pay raise, Democrats charged.

The GOP-backed bill introduced late Monday would freeze the salaries of politicians and the nation's 2 million federal employees for the remainder of fiscal 2013. Currently, federal worker salaries are frozen through the end of a short-term spending agreement that expires in March. As part of efforts to curtail the deficit, federal employees have not seen a cost of living increase in their paychecks in more than three years.
And they're still overpaid for the same work done in the private sector...
An awful lot of people in the private sector have seen pay cuts over the same period, and at the state and local government levels an awful lot of jobs are gone for good. It's ugly for pretty much everyone these days.

#2  .5% would have been about $5.85 a week after taxes on my check.
Congrats, go pay off the deficit.

And there is no private equivalent to what I do, Project Engineer would be closest to it and would pay at least as much as what I make working for the gubmint. Way less hassles though.
So....I hope you feel better seeing my $5.85 a week go to Pakistain or spare parts for the Muslim Brotherhood's new F-16s.
The people in the private sector seeing pay cuts are probably not professionals, which is the bulk of what the Exectutive Branch employs in my work. Just because you got a pay cut from your job stamping out brake pads doesn't translate to me or anyone else. I have heard that argued a thousand times already and I dismiss it. Make govt a shitty job and the good govt workers will leave, the bad ones will always hang on and you will hav a Zimbobwe type govt in a few short years. Still expensive, but totally corrupt and useless.
Dont confuse govt employees with politicians.

#3  I am in the private sector. I and my professional colleagues had effective pay cuts this year - base pay stayed the same with no COLA while incentive pay (up to 10% or more of income in normal years, and a negotiated part of the salary package) was totally withheld. Me too, but fortunately for me, my part of the private sector is the oil industry, and, don't know this year's results yet, but last year was pretty good for me. Payback for the 1984-98 period where 2/3 of my peers lost their jobs and the rest of us got smaller increases than inflation.

Thailand will deport Rohingya Muslim asylum seekers
Thai officials say Rohingya Muslim migrants allegedly fleeing violence and persecution in western Burma must be sent back to their homeland. The 73 refugees, including women and children, were discovered drifiting in a small, overcrowded boat off the Thai resort town of Phuket, short of their final destination of Malaysia.

Thai authorities seized the boat, which had been at sea for 13 days, and gave the refugees food and supplies on Tuesday. But local media reports on Wednesday say they have been arrested and ordered to return to Burma by land.

Sunai Phasuk, a senior researcher with Human Rights Watch, says Thai authorities must come up with a better policy for dealing with boat people. He said, "For the first time, Thai authorities have intercepted a boat, filled up not with young Rohingya men seeking work in Malaysia, but families with young children and women. They are traveling together claiming they are escaping persecution, human rights violations, and violence in their homeland."

The latest group of asylum seekers were headed for Malaysia, which has become a common destination for Rohingya refugees. On Sunday, about 450 Rohingya landed in Malaysia after a boat journey that left one of them dead.

Rohingya are fleeing Burma's western Rakhine, or Arakan, state, where violence in recent months has killed dozens and displaced hundreds of thousands. Rights groups accuse Burma's government of systematic persecution of the members of the Rohingya, considered to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Iraq
Attacks kill three in Iraq ahead of Shiite ceremony
[Al Ahram] A boom-mobile killed two pilgrims Wednesday in Iraq on the eve of a major Shiite religious ceremony and the nephew of the parliament speaker died in a separate attack, officials said.

No group grabbed credit for the bloodshed, but Sunni beturbanned goons often target Shiite pilgrims in the run-up to major rituals and attack officials in a bid to destabilise the government.

The pilgrims were killed when a boom-mobile went kaboom! as they were walking to the shrine city of Karbala to take part in Shiite Arbaeen ceremonies due to climax on Thursday, police and a doctor said. Eight other pilgrims were maimed.

Arbaeen marks 40 days after the Ashura anniversary commemorating the slaying of Imam Hussein, one of Shiite Islam's most revered figures, by the armies of the caliph Yazid in 680 AD.

In the northern city of djinn-infested Mosul, gunfire killed the nephew of Iraq's parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni politician, a police officer and a doctor said. The youth was the son of Nujaifi's brother and bodyguard Khaled.

The precise circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.

And a day earlier, gunnies rubbed out three coppers in the town of Tarmiyah, north of Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
, officials said.

The violence came amid political tensions between Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and a secular-backed party in his fragile national unity government.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian rebels attack military airport in northwest
[Al Ahram] Syrian rebels, some from Islamist units, fired machineguns and mortars at helicopters grounded at a northern military air base near the main Aleppo-Damascus
...The capital of Iran's Syrian satrapy...
highway on Wednesday, a monitoring group said.

The al Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham Brigade and other units operating in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib were attacking the Afis military airport near Taftanaz, the pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

There was no immediate account of the fighting around the air base from Syrian state media.

Insurgents trying to topple Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
see his air power as their main threat. They hold swathes of eastern and northern provinces, as well as a crescent of suburbs around the capital, Damascus, but have been unable to protect rebel-held territory from relentless attack by helicopters and jets.

In recent months, rebel units have besieged several military installations, especially along Syria's main north-south artery from Aleppo, its most populous city, to Damascus.

The Observatory's director, Rami Abdelrahman, said Wednesday's attack was the latest of several attempts to capture the base. A satellite image of the airport shows more than 40 helicopter landing pads, a runway and aircraft hangars.

An estimated 45,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, which began in March 2011 with peaceful protests against four decades of Assad family rule but turned into an armed revolt after months of government repression.

In Damascus, Assad's forces fired artillery and mortars at the eastern districts of Douma, Harasta, Irbin and Zamlaka, where rebels have a foothold, activists living there said.

Syria's civil war is the longest and deadliest conflict to emerge from uprisings that began sweeping the Arab world in 2011 and has developed a significant sectarian element.

Rebels, mostly from the Sunni Moslem majority, confront Assad's army and security forces, dominated by his Shi'ite-derived Alawite sect, which, along with some other minorities, fears Dire Revenge™ if he falls.

U.N.-led diplomatic peace efforts have stumbled. Western and many Sunni Arab states demand Assad's immediate removal, an idea resisted by Russia, China and Syria's Shi'ite ally Iran.

The rebels say they will not negotiate unless Assad, who has vowed to fight to the death, leaves power.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Official: PA will not interfere in Jordan elections
Senior Fatah official Nabil Shaath insisted Wednesday that the Paleostinian government would not interfere in upcoming Jordanian elections, after a party official declared public support for candidates.
Since Jordan is another country and all...
Fatah secretary in Jordan Najeeb al-Kaddoumi threw his weight behind one electoral list for the Jan. 23 parliamentary vote, causing consternation in Jordanian political circles.

Shaath said it was not the government's policy to interfere in another state's internal affairs.
Other than that attempted coup a few decades back...
Recent meetings between President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
and Jordanian politicians are not related to the elections, but just standard briefings considering the strong ties between the countries, the official noted.

Jordan's King Abdullah was the first head of state to visit the West Bank after the UN voted to admit Paleostine as a non-member state in November.

Air raid kills 12 members of one family near Damascus
[Al Ahram] An air raid on a town partly held by rebels on the outskirts of Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
on Wednesday killed at least 12 members of the same family, most of them children, a watchdog said.

Regime warplanes bombed the town of Moadamiyet al-Sham, southwest of the capital, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Warplanes also attacked the towns of Shebaa to the southeast and Deir Assafir south of Damascus, where 11 children were killed in November when cluster bombs were dropped on a playground, according to Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...

The deadly strikes came as forces loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
battled rebels with artillery fire in Harasta and Douma, myrmidon strongholds to the northeast of the capital, and in Daraya to the southwest.

Army reinforcements have been massing for weeks in Daraya in a bid to drive rebel Free Syrian Army fighters from the town, the site of the bloodiest massacre of the conflict in which hundreds died in August.

Northeast of Damascus, the army shelled Qaboon district, the Observatory said, while in the south, residents of a Paleostinian refugee camp that faced deadly air raids in December fled once again amid mortar attacks.

Oh my! Sounds like we must be providing air support to Pencilneck (nobody else would use cluster bombs on a playground - I'm pretty sure the UN said that sometime.) 12 members of one family, mostly kiddies (and the family kitten too!) Sounds like a good Progressive response to controlling a serious contributor to our excess population. (Do I really need to say 'sarc?')

Afghanistan
Hekmatyar: Prince Harry is a 'jackal' killing innocents, says feared Afghanistan warlord
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] In a rare and exclusive interview with The Daily Telegraph Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
, who has been designated a global terrorist by the United States, heaped insults on the British Royal and pledged to carry out more attacks before the UK's withdrawal in 2014.

Speaking from Qazi's guesthouse an undisclosed location the warlord accused Britannia of dragging "herself into this unjustified, useless but cruel conflict to please the White House. The British did not gain anything instead they lost blood and treasure."

"I do not understand how the British public accept their children being sent to certain death in order to please American generals.

Turning to Prince Harry he said that "the British Prince comes to Afghanistan to kill innocent Afghans while he is drunk. He wants to hunt down Mujaheddin with his helicopter rockets without any shame.

"But he does not understand this simple fact that the hunting of Afghan lions and eagles is not that easy! Jackals cannot hunt lions."

Pointing to a recent attack on a base where Prince Harry was located he said: "During the Mujaheddin attack on the American base the Prince saw that he was the one about to be hunted and was searching for a hole in which to hide himself."

And he added: 'It seems that some British authorities still dream about the times of the eighteenth and nineteenth century and they want their ambassador to be treated like a viceroy and their prince to go out in uniform to hunt for human beings and play the satanic role that they used to play in the past.'

The warlord's comments came in an interview with the Daily Telegraph from a mountain base, reported to be close to the Afghan/Pakistain border.
Probably closer to Miranshah than to Nangahar. Hek is a constant.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Alaska Faces New Ice Age
Alaska is going rogue on climate change.

Defiant as ever, the state that gave rise to Sarah Palin is bucking the mainstream yet again: While global temperatures surge hotter and the ice-cap crumbles, the nation's icebox is getting even icier.
How can they tell? It's like a freeze most of the time.
That may not be news to Alaskans coping with another round of 50-below during the coldest winter in two decades, or to the mariners locked out of the Bering Sea this spring by record ice growth.

Then again, it might. The 49th state has long been labeled one of the fastest-warming spots on the planet.
We're having a Heat Wave a Tropical Heat Wave.
But that's so 20th Century. In the first decade since 2000, the 49th state cooled 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

That's a "large value for a decade," the Alaska Climate Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks said in "The First Decade of the New Century: A Cooling Trend for Most of Alaska."
Alaska Paul, you might want to think about moving further South.
The cooling is widespread -- holding true for 19 of the 20 National Weather Service stations sprinkled from one corner of Alaska to the other, the paper notes. It's most significant in Western Alaska, where King Salmon on the Alaska Peninsula saw temperatures drop most sharply, a significant 4.5 degrees for the decade, the report says.

Voting Drives In State Hospitals Will Continue
[CAROLINA JOURNAL] The director of state facilities for the mentally ill and developmentally disabled said his department will continue to offer annual voter registration and voting assistance for patients and residents. He also said that while efforts are made to notify patients' guardians about voting activities, a patient's right to vote takes priority over any objections from guardians.

J. Luckey Welsh, director of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities at the Department of Health and Human Services, told Carolina Journal there are about 3,000 people residing in the state facilities.
Enough to tip a close election. Just ask Al Franken...
Voting records obtained by CJ showed only 73 individuals from six facilities cast votes that were accepted for the Nov. 6 election. Sixty-one of those voters were new registrants. "I think we allowed our citizens the right to vote. I am happy we allowed them to do it," he replied.

The laws and rules governing voting by mentally challenged individuals remain murky, and it's unclear whether state employees who assisted disabled patients and residents to cast ballots at early voting sites were complying with the law.

The registration drives were conducted for the Nov. 6 election even though federal law requires facilities to determine whether patients and residents want to register and want to vote at the time they're admitted. The state stepped up its registration efforts this fall after a request to increase voter turnout at state-run facilities from Disability Rights North Carolina, a nonprofit that advocates for the rights of the mentally and developmentally disabled.

Horst Wessel Islamist activist discharged after Tahrir Square beating
[Al Ahram] Well-known Islamist activist Abdel-Rahman Ezz has been discharged from hospital after being severely beaten on Tuesday night on Tahrir Square, as he attempted to visit hospitalised April 6 member Mohannad Samir.

The former host at 25 TV, who is widely seen to be a supporter of President Mohamed Morsi and the Moslem Brüderbund, was kicked out of Cairo's Ahmed Maher Hospital by friends of Samir.

Samir is at death's door after been bumped off by unknown assailants on Tahrir Square two days ago.

According to Ezz's friends, after being ejected from the hospital, the Islamist activist was then forcibly taken to Tahrir where he was badly beaten before being transferred to the emergency rooms of El-Helal Hospital in downtown Cairo.

Supporters of Ezz have reportedly threatened to avenge his attack.

Tahrir activists and protesters accuse Ezz of using his Twitter account to incite violence against last month's opposition sit-in outside the Heliopolis presidential palace.

He is also charged with targeting prominent opposition activists during the ensuing 6 December festivities outside the presidential building by pointing them out to Moslem Brüderbund supporters using a laser pen. The bloody street battles between the rival protest groups left nine dead.

Several political forces claim Ezz lead the recent arson attack against the Wafd Party headquarters after he was filmed leading the protest heading to the liberal party's building in the Dokki area.

In response to his assault, Abdel-Rahman Ezz's family has accused 6 April Youth Movement of attacking Ezz in Tahrir Square and hiring thugs to beat him up.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran to Citizens: Flee Isfahan
Iranian officials have instructed residents of Isfahan to run away leave the city, renewing concerns that a nearby nuclear site could be leaking radioactive material.
"Oops?... What do you mean? 'Oops'?"
An edict issued Wednesday by Iranian authorities orders Isfahan's one-and-a-half million people to leave the city "because pollution has now reached emergency levels," the BBC reported.
"Forget the kids, Fatima! Just get in the car!"
However, outside observers suspect that the evacuation order may corroborate previous reports indicating that a uranium enrichment facility near Isfahan had been leaking radioactive material.
No! Re-e-e-e-e-ally?
Tehran went to great lengths in December to deny these reports, telling state-run media outlets that "the rumors about leaking and contamination at Isfahan's [Uranium Conversion Facility] are not true at all."
"Tut tut! Certainly not! Pshaw!"
November reports indicated that a radioactive leak might have poisoned several workers at the nuclear plant, which converts highly toxic yellowcake uranium into material that could be used in the core of a nuclear weapon.
"Cheeze, Ardeshir! What's that thing growing on your neck?"
"It's a gill slit. They're really very handy. I swam to work this morning, under water the whole way."

The head of Iran's emergency services agency said at the time that residents have no reason to worry about possible contamination resulting from a possible leak.
"Remain calm! All is well!"
Stories about the potential leak soon disappeared from state-run news websites, Trend reported in late November. Iranian officials denied that a leak has occurred and blamed Western media outlets for creating "tumult" in the region.
"Really, don't mention it and it will go away by itself."
"Good idea. Hey, are your palps changing color?"
"Yeah. I think it might be mating season for whatever species I am now."

Wednesday's evacuation order is now fueling concerns that Iranian officials are trying to hide something, including further fallout from a possible radioactive leak.
"Tut. We evacuate major cities for no reason all the time!"
"Pollution in Isfahan is a problem but in the past, Iranian authorities respond by closing schools and the government to keep people at home and let the pollution dissipate, not by evacuating people," said Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon adviser on Iran and Iraq who has written about Isfahan's battle against pollution.
"Hey, you! Can'tcha read? The sign sez 'Please don't feed the Thing!'"
"Mass evacuations suggest a far more serious problem," Rubin explained. "There are two possibilities here: There is a radiation leak and the regime is lying or there is really bad pollution and no one believes the regime's explanations."
In other words, they're either lying or they're lying? 'Zat sound about right?
Rubin also pointed out that Iranian officials have a history of lying to both Western officials and their own citizens.
It remains unclear whether the technology has been properly inspected for safety because Iran has denied Western officials access to many of its nuclear sites.
Thugs generally do that, you know...
The nuclear site at Isfahan has been targeted for attack in the past. An unexplained explosion at the plant in 2011 is reported to have damaged the facility.
"It was a sad day for Isfahan last night, brethren and sistern. There was an unexplained explosion at the nuclear plant that killed over 300 whatever-they-were. An additional thousand were wounded, we think. Or they might be that color naturally. Who can tell?"
The nuclear plant also sits on an active fault line. The city of Isfahan has been destroyed at least six times from past earthquakes, a point of concern among regional experts.
Oh, yeah. That'd cause me a bit of concern, too, and I'm not even a regional expert.
"Given that Iran is on an earthquake zone and has lost tens of thousands of people with regularity suggests that a devastating nuclear accident is only a matter of time," said Rubin.
"Really."

Not only is there a U enrichment plant but also several old nuclear research reactors of 1980s Chinese vintage.

Also, there are a number of chemical plants (industrial scale and small 'whoknowswhat') there too.

Give Up On The Constitution? The Political Left Already Has
[NEWS.INVESTORS] For many, the Constitution is the barrier that blocks government from trampling a free people. Yet many on the political left see it as a hurdle to their ambitions. Consider the constitutional law professor who wants to kill it.

The headline of Louis Michael Seidman's op-ed in the Sunday New York Times
...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...
was "Let's Give Up on the Constitution." The message from the Georgetown professor of constitutional law is that the Constitution is "archaic" and "idiosyncratic," and even has within it "downright evil provisions."

Naturally, Seidman dredges up slavery and the "white propertied men" who wrote the Constitution in his effort to discredit our founders' monument to liberty.
The thought occurred to me whilst my mind was wandering today that despite throwing the slavery charge around every time they get a chance, the people doing so are likely the very ones who, if slavery were legal today, would buy a few -- just to keep house, do the yard work, wash the car, the sort of things that eat up their own valuable time, not to abuse them, of course. No doubt they'd care for them greatly, especially if they were young and pretty and maybe a little bit tarty. And the little woman's out of town visiting her mother and her significant other. They'd be almost like members of the family. Probably owners would be against the institution itself, but it would be John Boehner's fault that it couldn't be abolished. Or even better, George W. Bush's. After all, the poor things would need the care of their betters. Why, few of them had even been to college!
Seidman's op-ed is a locally grown, organic vegetable for the left. That side of the political spectrum holds our Constitution in contempt because of its limits on government power. It's a nuisance because it restricts the "progressive" objective to order and plan American society around the Democratic left's ideas.

Woodrow Wilson articulated the Democrats' problems with the Constitution more than a century ago. He argued that it "was not made to fit us like a straitjacket" and that "in its elasticity lies its chief greatness."
... he said, piously.
In other words, the Constitution says not what the framers and those who ratified it said it does -- it says whatever the whims of any given age wants it to say.

Which is to say in reality that it says nothing at all.

More recently, Ezra Klein of the Washington Post complained that the Constitution's "text is confusing because it was written more than 100 years ago" and "rarely speaks directly to the questions we ask it."
It's actually worded pretty clearly, despite its occasional funny use of the letter "s." "Congress shall make no law..." What's fuzzy about that? "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed..." How difficult is that to understand? I'd call it clearer than Dickens and a lot clearer than, for instance, Bulwer-Lytton.
What the left fundamentally objects to, though, is not the language of the Constitution.
It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents -- except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness.
Democrats want to police speech, for instance, but are hindered by the First Amendment that guarantees we are free to speak our minds.
"But surely it matters if we offend people?" Actually, when I was a child people didn't use the word fcuk. It was considered much too rough for the ears of wimmin and kiddies. I guess we're not thinking of the children in that respect, huh? Or were they thinking of banning its use?
They also want to restrict firearm ownership, but the Second Amendment says they can't.
"Oh, noze! Guns should not have Constitutional rights! What have guns ever accomplished?"
The left lives to redistribute wealth and punish the rich, though the Constitution says everyone must be treated equally under the law.
I thought it was English Common Law that said that? But it may be older. As Pericles said:
If we look to the laws, they afford equal justice to all in their private differences; if no social standing, advancement in public life falls to reputation for capacity, class considerations not being allowed to interfere with merit; nor again does poverty bar the way
But he was an old white guy and he's been dead for a long time. And they had slaves back in those days, so his opinion's obviously invalid...

President B.O. himself has lamented that the Warren Court failed to "break free from the essential constraints" of the Constitution. He has complained, as well, that it has restricted his ability to carry out his authoritarian urges because of the checks placed on the executive office by the other branches of government.
The guys who wrote the Constitution had recent experience with having a king and taxation without representation and that sort of thing. They were pretty sensitive about it, in fact.
The Constitution isn't perfect, but we can't give up on it. If we do, we also give up on the great American experiment in liberty. That would be a profound tragedy.

Afghanistan
Hekmatyar denies links with Pakistani Taliban
[Dawn] Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
in an interview published Wednesday has denied having any links with the Pakistain Taliban, condemning the Pak turban outfit's strategy of blowing up schools and blocking girls' education.

Hekmatyar, a former prime minister who leads Afghanistan's second largest turban group Hizb-e-Islami, told Britannia's Daily Telegraph newspaper that he was against the blowing up of schools and educational institutions "not only in Afghanistan and Pakistain but elsewhere in the world."
Ummm... But it doesn't happen anywhere else in the world...
"I don't think that a devoted mujahid could be involved in such things," said Hekmatyar, accusing 'foreign intelligence agencies' of being involved in such attacks.

The Pak Taliban's blocking of girls' schooling was thrown into the spotlight in October by its attempted murder of 15-year-old education campaigner Malala Yousafzai on her schoolbus.

Hekmatyar indicated that Hizb-e-Islami, notorious for its bloody siege of Kabul in the 1990s, has softened some of its hardline Islamist policies which included banning women from education.

He insisted that the group considers "education is as necessary for girls as it is for boys", though they object to combined male and female classes.

India-Pakistan
Extremism in action
[Dawn] EXTREMISM is one thing as a debatable philosophy, and quite another in its barbaric, physical manifestation. Two examples of the latter, as the world exited 2012, were particularly blood-curdling. The Pak Taliban killed the 22 Levies they had kidnapped, and in Nigeria, Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
marauders slit the throats of a number of men, women and kiddies. The Taliban and Boko Haram both claim to be fighting for causes they deem Islamic, yet farthest from their philosophy is that spirit of compassion which for so many Moslems across the world is fundamental to Islamic teachings.
Well, I just gagged. How about you?
There is a warped logic at play here. Even if the Taliban considered the Moslem Levies 'infidels', and thus deserving of death in their eyes, which Islamic law, especially in early examples, justifies the murder of non-Moslem prisoners of war? They have not stopped there. The Taliban have displayed the remains of their victims as trophies and videotaped executions as a chilling message. Even their arch enemies, no angels when it comes to the rights of prisoners of war (e.g. America in Guantanamo), prefer to hide their excesses.

In the subcontinent, none of the leading Islamic scholars -- including Sayyid Ahmad Barelvi, Maulana Maudoodi and the entire Deoband group -- ever advocated mass slaughter to establish Sharia rule. The examples of PoWs' murder came to Pakistain in the wake of the Afghan war when some foreign faceless myrmidons killed Soviet prisoners.
The Sovs knew very well it was curtains if they were captured, just like ISAF knows it today.
But that was rare and no mainstream cut-thoat group declared this its official policy. The Taliban's record shows there is nothing sacred for them -- schools, mosques, shrines, hospitals, religious processions, peace jirgas or funerals. Their aim is to sow terror as they are averse to employing peaceful means to gain power.
That's why we call them "terrorists," isn't it?
In Nigeria, the Boko Haram is opposed to 'Western' education, but the methods it employs to resist it, take a leaf out of the barbarism prevalent in mediaeval times. In Pakistain it's a matter of deep shame that civil society has maintained silence on these depredations, while the mainstream Learned Elders of Islam have chosen to look the other way, some because they approve of this barbarism, others out of fear.

Pakistan charity suspends work after killings
[Al Ahram] A Pak charity on Wednesday suspended its operations for three days after seven staff were rubbed out in the northwest, where aid groups demanded better protection.
Where's the mighty Pak army when you need them?
"The NGO has suspended its activities for three days to mourn the deaths. They will decide after three days whether to start work again or not," said Abdul Rashid Khan, police chief of Swabi district where the attack took place.

The six women and their male colleague were ambushed and rubbed out on Tuesday after returning from a local community centre.

"All seven victims of the attack have been buried.
In that case it's all over. Forget about it.
Police have started to investigate but we are not yet in a position to accuse anyone," Khan said.
And probably never will be. And if they do there won't be enough evidence for a conviction. And Omar Saeed Sheikh still hasn't been hanged.
The organization, Support With Working Solution, runs dozens of health and education projects, including polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
vaccinations, in the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
, where the Taliban and other Islamist hard boyz are active.

Tuesday's attack, for which there has been no claim of responsibility, comes days after nine polio vaccination workers were rubbed out in a string of incidents in Pakistain.

There are growing concerns about a renewed surge of violence in the northwest.
Renewed? Did it stop for a moment and we missed it?

#1  An interesting religion. Cripples. Fatwas marriages for sex and then a cigarette and divorce at dawn. AND they spend a LOT of time killing EACH OTHER.

I have often thought just to get a calculator and count the number of corpses any average day on this site alone of Mooselimbs doing one another. Big numbers. You forget which country it just piles up. 49 here and then another carbomb there. No Americans around, they just like to kill each other. And it goes on 365 days a year and year after year. Sell them some ammo. Islam is a business opportunity for ammo sales. Whole countries of cripples and Juice haters and rapists and unsolved crimes. Gnashing of teeth and spittle in their beards.

And camels, don't forget they have camels.

Africa Horn
Ethiopia Breaks Up Islamist Militant Cell
[VOA News] Æthiopian police have tossed in the clink
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
15 suspected forces of Evil allegedly trained by beturbanned fascisti in neighbouring Somalia and who were plotting attacks in Æthiopia, the country's intelligence agency said on Wednesday.

The arrests were the latest in a crackdown on what bigwigs say is a growing threat from hard boy Islam in Æthiopia, a Horn of Africa nation predominantly comprised of Orthodox Christians and a large minority of Moslems.

The would-be forces of Evil were caught following a 20-day sting operation while they plotted to set up cells in the eastern town of Harar and in Kemise in the northeast, the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) said.

"Members of the group were recruited, trained and armed by Somalia's al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
and their aim was to wage Jihad [holy war] and stage attacks inside the country,'' an NISS statement said, aired by the state-run Æthiopian Television.

Addis Ababa has sent troops to Somalia to help other African countries battling to crush al-Shabaab's six-year insurgency.

The suspects, whose nationalities were not disclosed, were said to have crossed into Æthiopia from Somalia and Kenya.

Wednesday's TV report showed police displaying large amounts of arms including rifles and grenades, as well as black flags with Arabic inscriptions. The report said CDs and video tapes of "jihadist messages'' were also seized during the operation.

Africa Subsaharan
CAR President Fires Defense Minister, Army Chief
[VOA News] Central African Republic President Francois Bozize has fired his son as defense minister and fired the army chief of staff, after a string of victories by rebel forces.

The firings were announced in a decree read over state radio Wednesday. The decree said Bozize is taking the defense minister's post for himself.

The dramatic move comes as the rebels seem poised to move on the capital. A coalition of rebel groups known as Seleka captured several major towns and cities last month and is positioned less than 200 kilometers from the capital, Bangui.

Earlier Wednesday, a central African regional force created a buffer zone between the capital and the rebel stronghold of Sibut. VOA correspondent Anne Look, who is in the CAR, reports that about 500 soldiers from Chad, Gabon and the Republic of Congo assembled Wednesday in the town of Damara.

The head of the regional force, General Jean Felix Akaga, warned the rebels Wednesday that to attack Damara would be a "declaration of war" against the 10-nation Economic Community of Central African States.
