Sarkozy: Jail those who browse terror websites
France's president proposed a sweeping new law Thursday that would jail those who visit extremist web sites — one of several tough new measures floated in the wake of a murderous shooting spree.

The proposed rules, unveiled by Nicolas Sarkozy after the death of an Islamist fanatic wanted for a horrifying series of execution-style murders, have alarmed journalists and legal experts, who say they risk pulling the plug on free expression.

Sarkozy argued that it was time to treat those who browse extremist websites the same way as those who consume child pornography.

"Anyone who regularly consults Internet sites which promote terror or hatred or violence will be sentenced to prison," he told a campaign rally in Strasbourg, in eastern France. "What is possible for pedophiles should be possible for trainee terrorists and their supporters, too."

How the proposed rules would work isn't clear. When asked, Sarkozy's office directed the query for details to the Ministry of Justice, which didn't immediately offer clarification.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
PA urges donor countries to pay up
These guys are becoming incompetent. Maybe they should hire Tony Soprano as an advisory consultant. Tony never seemed to have much trouble getting his "donors" to pay up.
Palestinian Authority PM Salam Fayyad says donations necessary to help $1 billion PA fiscal deficit; Norwegian FM says Israel should transfer PA tax revenue.
The Palestinian Authority Thursday hailed as "important" a decision by the international donors to provide financial aid to the Palestinians, but urged the countries to channel the promised funds immediately.

Representatives of international donors met in Brussels Wednesday to discuss the financial crisis in the PA.

At the end of the meeting, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere urged the donors to ensure the contribution of $1 billion in assistance [to the PA] in 2012.

He also urged Israel to facilitate the transfer of tax revenues belonging to the PA.

The donor's "Ad-Hoc Liaison Committee on Palestine" said after the meeting in Brussels that the global economic slowdown has created a $1 billion deficit in the PA's budget.

It noted that at the beginning of this year the PA has "experienced a severe fiscal crisis, which threatens to become protracted given the recent and projected declines in donor assistance" and the situation could soon be "totally unmanageable."

The committee appealed to Israel to "ensure monthly transfers to the PA in a predictable manner."

PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad described the donor countries' decision as important, but stressed the need to transfer the promised funds quickly to help the PA government overcome the severe financial crisis.

Fayyad said that it was also important that Arab countries fulfill their financial obligations toward the Palestinians.

Fayyad denied that the donors had conditioned continued financial aid to the Palestinians on their abandoning efforts to unilaterally achieve UN recognition of a Palestinian state.

Fayyad, who attended the meeting in Brussels, complained that Israel was preventing the PA from carrying out a development plan in Area C of the West Bank which is under exclusive Israeli control and which constitutes nearly 60% of the land.

Alleged French gunman on US no-fly List
A U.S. counterterrorism official says the man suspected in the deaths of seven people in France was on the list of known or suspected terrorists who are prohibited from flying to the United States.

The counterterrorism official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, says the suspected shooter, Mohamed Merah, had been on the no-fly list since 2010.

The U.S. no-fly list includes thousands of known or suspected terrorists. Most of the people on the list are foreign.

Merah was killed Thursday after a 32-hour standoff with French authorities.

Kurd militants threaten Turkey if it enters Syria
Turkish Kurd militants threatened on Thursday to turn all Kurdish populated areas into a "war zone" if Turkish troops entered Syria, a sign the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has allies in Syria may be taking sides in the conflict there.

A renewed alliance between Damascus and the PKK would anger Turkey and could prompt it to take an even stronger line against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over his brutal repression of anti-government protesters.

PKK field commander Murat Karayilan said Turkey was preparing the ground for an intervention in Syria.

"The Turkish state is planning an intervention against our people," the Europe-based Firat news agency, close to the militants, quoted him as saying.

"Let me state clearly, if the Turkish state intervenes against our people in western Kurdistan, all of Kurdistan will turn into a war zone," he said.

Western Kurdistan is the term Kurdish nationalists use to describe Kurdish areas of northeast Syria, while by Kurdistan they mean the Kurdish areas of Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Iran.

'Toulouse gunman had visited Israel'
French gunman Mohamed Merah, who killed three soldiers and four Jews in France in the last two weeks, had been on a trip to Israel in the past, France's Le Monde newspaper reported Thursday.

According to the report, Merah's passport had Israeli stamps in it. The purpose of his visit is not known, but analysts suspect he was either trying to visit the Palestinian territories or do reconnaissance to plan a terror attack.

Based on the stamps in his passports, Merah also visited Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Afghanistan.

Project Gunwalker: ATF Managers Lawyer Up, Slam Gun Laws and Still Deny Gunwalking
Katie Pavlich of Townhall is following this story closely
The attorneys of Bill Newell, embattled former ATF Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix Field Division, and David Voth, Supervisor of Phoenix Group VII (the group that carried out Operation Fast and Furious), are accusing Senator Charles Grassley and Chairman of the House Oversight Committee Darrell Issa of making "many inaccurate and harmful statements" and "factual distortions against" their clients.

In a letter obtained by Townhall, attorney and former Department of Justice Prosecutor Paul E. Pelletier, representing Newell, writes on behalf his defendant to "correct the factual distortions in your staff's 'memorandum.'

To be clear, this faulty memorandum and the conduct of the Committee's investigation to date has disserved the hard working ATF agents, in Phoenix and elsewhere who, with great personal sacrifice, risk their lives every day to make a difference in the communities in which we live.

It is, of course, now evident that the citizens of this country are far less safe today primarily as a result of the irresponsible manner in which this 'outcome-determined' investigation has been conducted."

Pelletier accuses Issa and Grassley of refusing to follow evidence in the Fast and Furious investigation, saying, "I have learned that the ultimate success and legitimacy of any investigation depends upon the capacity of investigators to blindly follow the evidence where it leads and to neutrally and dispassionately evaluate that evidence before reaching a conclusion.

Given your staff's tortured factual conclusions, your staff's utter disregard of any evidence that contravened or rebutted the preordained and misdirected conclusions of misconduct, speculation to motive is unnecessary."

snip
The letter from Levy blames Issa and Grassley for causing damage to Voth and for weakening "the criminal justice system's attempt to help protect innocent Americans and Mexicans from the drug cartel's conspiracy to purchase, deliver, and use some of the deadliest firearms to protect their dope."

So, who should we believe? Corrupt ATF managers who have denied gunwalking since day one of the Fast and Furious investigation, or brave whistleblowers who have put their personal lives and careers on the line to get the truth to the American people?

Keep in mind: 1,400 Fast and Furious guns are still missing; after more than a year of investigation, the DOJ has still failed to turn over 74,000 requested documents to the House Oversight Committee

#1  Pelletier accuses Issa and Grassley of refusing to follow evidence in the Fast and Furious investigation, saying

"Congressional oversight refers to oversight by the United States Congress of the Executive Branch, including the numerous U.S. federal agencies. Congressional oversight refers to the review, monitoring, and supervision of federal agencies, programs, activities, and policy implementation. Congress exercises this power largely through its congressional committee system. However, oversight, which dates to the earliest days of the Republic, also occurs in a wide variety of congressional activities and contexts. These include authorization, appropriations, investigative, and legislative hearings by standing committees; specialized investigations by select committees; and reviews and studies by congressional support agencies and staff."

Seems like that is what Grassley and Issa are doing. In other words, they are doing their jobs.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Silky Pony is First Name Uncovered in 'Millionaire Madam' Investigation
A call girl working for alleged "Millionaire Madam" Anna Gristina told investigators she was paid to have sex with former U.S. Sen. John Edwards when he was in New York raising money for his failed presidential bid, DNAinfo has learned.

Edwards is the first big name to surface in connection to Gristina's alleged prostitution scheme run out of an Upper East Side apartment.

Edwards' lawyer declined to comment on when reached Wednesday. On Thursday morning, his attorneys issued a statement to Politico and other news outlets saying their client "categorically" denied the allegation. Later Thursday morning, DNAinfo was contacted by Edwards attorney Abbe Lowell demanding a retraction.

According to "On The Inside" sources, Edwards allegedly hooked up with one of Gristina's high-end hookers in 2007 when the dashing pol from North Carolina brought his then high-flying presidential campaign to the Big Apple.

Supreme Court backs landowners, limits power of EPA
The Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that landowners can sue to challenge a federal government compliance order under the clean water law, a decision that sides with corporate groups and puts new limits on a key Environmental Protection Agency power.

The justices unanimously rejected the government's position that individuals or companies must first fail to comply with an EPA order and face potentially costly enforcement action before a court can review the case.

The opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia was a victory for an Idaho couple who challenged a 2007 EPA order that required them to restore a wetland they had filled with dirt and rock as they began to build a new vacation home near Priest Lake. They were also told to stop construction on the home.

The couple, Chantell and Michael Sackett, denied their property had ever contained a wetland and complained they were being forced to comply with an order without a court hearing.

Their appeal drew support from the Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Association of Home Builders and General Electric Co, a company that had made a similar challenge to the EPA compliance orders.

The Supreme Court's ruling comes at a time when the EPA has faced fierce criticism from many Republicans in Congress who say it has issued the most ambitious clean air regulations in decades and has become heavy-handed in enforcement actions.

Scalia concluded the Sacketts may bring a civil lawsuit under the Administrative Procedures Act to challenge the EPA's order.

He said that since the EPA's decision was final and the couple faced potential large fines, they had no other adequate remedy but to bring a civil lawsuit.

Reading his decision from the bench, Scalia said that the Clean Water Act does not prevent judicial review of such orders.

Under the law, violations of the Clean Water Act can result in fines of up to $37,500 per day, plus as much as an additional $37,500 per day for violating the EPA compliance order.

The EPA issues nearly 3,000 compliance orders a year that require accused violators of environmental laws to stop alleged harmful actions and repair any damage that was caused.

The justices overturned a U.S. appeals court ruling that a compliance order was not subject to judicial review until later when the EPA has brought an enforcement action and seeks to have a judge rule in its favor.
Good call guys. Start rolling back the executive tyranny!

Report: Al-Qaida was saddened by Keith Olbermann's MSNBC firing
When MSNBC discarded Keith Olbermann, al-Qaida mourned.

So reports David Ignatius, the Washington Post columnist who has gained exclusive access to some of the documents recovered from Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

In his Wednesday column in the Washington Post, Ignatius reported on the details of a 21-page letter to bin Laden written by al-Qaida media adviser Adam Gadahn. Though the letter was undated, Ignatius says that it was likely written sometime after November 2010.

Laying out the current media landscape for the now waterlogged terrorist kingpin, Gadahn, an American-born Jewish convert to Islam, lamented the "firing" of Olbermann from MSNBC.

"In the letter, the media adviser focuses on 'how to exploit' the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on television," Ignatius writes.

"He worries that CNN 'seems to be in cooperation with the government more than the others,' though he praises its 'good and detailed' Arabic coverage. 'I used to think that MSNBC channel may be good and neutral a bit,' he continues, but then notes the firing of Olbermann."

Olbermann's final show on MSNBC was in January 2011.

#2  The referenced WaPo editorial concludes:
The al-Qaeda spinmeister didn’t like Fox News (“let her die in her anger”), but it’s hard to understand why. Surely Rupert Murdoch’s network, with its saturation coverage of the war on terror, did more to elevate bin Laden’s profile than any other news outlet.

Seems pretty obvious to me -- he hated Fox for the same reason he loved MSNBC -- for the slant of the reporting.

Olde Tyme Religion
Islam: The Eighth Wonder of the World?
Provided they can be objective, members of a civilization are often best placed to critique that civilization. Accordingly, the following article, which recently made the rounds on various Arabic websites, is a good example of honest criticism of the Islamic world, by one of its own. Written by the late Dr. Ahmad al-Baghdadi (died 2010)—one of Kuwait's best known liberal activists and scholars (he held a PhD in the philosophy of Islamic thought and taught political science)—the article recounts how Islamic civilization is the eighth, and greatest, wonder of the world. We quickly discover this is not a compliment, as the article highlights some singularly troubling aspects of the Islamic world, from a liberal—in this sense, "rational"—point of view. For the record, Ahmad al-Baghdadi is not the first Muslim to portray Islamic culture as a fantastic anachronism that has outstayed its welcome; the prophet of Islam himself, Muhammad, made a similar prophesy in a canonical hadith: "Verily, Islam started as something strange, and it will again revert to being strange, just as it began, and it will recede between the two mosques [Mecca and Medina, birthplace of Islam] just as the serpent slithers back into its hole" (Sahih Muslim 1:271).

As we know, the wonders of the world are seven; but there is an eighth "Wonder -of-Wonders" not counted among the seven: this is the "Muslim nation [umma]." I specifically did not say the "Islamic [or Islamist] nation," for within this Muslim nation are wondrous matters not witnessed by any other nation since Allah Almighty created Adam. Here are some of these wonders:

1. It is the only nation that believes it is in the right—in every way—while all others are wrong;

2. The only nation that exonerates or lightens the punishment of an indicted criminal if he is Muslim and has learned some Quranic verses;

3. The only nation where a cleric evades indictment for inciting murder if he describes one of his adversaries as "an apostate";

4. The only nation that does not penalize a murderer if he kills "an apostate";

5. The only nation that shows leniency and assuages punishments for the "honor killing" of a sister or a wife;

6. The only nation whose holy book [Quran] starts with the word "read" [iqra'] and yet it is among the least nations that reads books, if any at all;

7. The only nation that still uses the word "infidel" [kafir] against those who oppose its clerics or religious groups;

8. The only nation where the ruling of a fatwa [religious edict] upstages the ruling of the law—and yet it brags about being a nation that upholds the "rule of law";

9. The only nation that does not contribute to the modern era—not even by producing a tooth brush—and yet brags about its extinct civilization.

10. The only nation that insults and condemns the West—yet lives as a parasite relying on the West in every way.

11. The only nation that incarcerates intellectuals for practicing freedom of expression.

12. The only nation that claims to be religious and guards its piety on both the official and the public level—yet there is nothing righteous about it.

13. The only nation that grants its students a PhD in religion [?];

14. The only nation still governed by the writings of those who died a thousand years ago;

15. The only nation where clerics serve as sycophantic toadies to the rulers, remaining silent about their transgressions, even when they goes against Sharia;

16. The only nation that does not acknowledge the International Human Rights Declaration;

Gunman dead as French siege ends
A police siege in the French city of Toulouse has ended with a man suspected of killing seven people now dead, the French interior minister has said.

Police stormed the flat where Mohammed Merah was holed up at 09:30 GMT, after a siege that had lasted 32 hours. Merah fired at officers and was found dead after jumping from a window.
Oh, 'jumped' did he?
The self-confessed al-Qaeda militant was suspected of killing four people outside a Jewish school and three soldiers in three separate attacks. Merah, 23, said he was acting to "avenge Palestinian children" and protest against French military interventions overseas.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, in a televised address, said everything had been done to try to bring Merah to justice but it was decided that no more lives could be put at risk. He also vowed a new crackdown on those who visited "hate or terrorism" web sites or travelled abroad to be indoctrinated in terrorism.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said officers had thrown grenades and entered by the door and windows of the flat. After surveying the scene and finding no sign of the suspect, they proceeded to the bathroom, moving slowly as they were wary of booby-traps.

When officers tried to find out if there was anyone in the bathroom, the suspect came out firing several weapons. Mr Gueant said the suspect was "shooting very violently. The bursts of gunfire were frequent and hard".
Gunfire usually is 'very violent'...
Merah then jumped from a window, continuing to fire. He was found dead on the ground.

One police source told Agence France-Presse that Merah had been killed by police as he fled through the window.
"I can fly Ma! I can fly!"
Two officers were reported wounded in the final assault.

Mr Gueant said: "A RAID [special police] officer who is used to this kind of thing told me that he had never seen such a violent assault."
By the perp or by the police?
A number of explosions had been set off overnight to intimidate Merah, officials said.
Worked well, didn't it...
They said he was armed with a Kalashnikov high-velocity rifle, a mini-Uzi 9mm machine pistol, several handguns and possibly grenades.
I had no idea that 'Fast and Furious' had reached into France...
Street lights were switched off in the vicinity of the building on Wednesday evening and surrounding areas evacuated.

In his TV address, Mr Sarkozy announced an investigation into whether Merah had accomplices and into possible Islamist indoctrination practices in prisons. He also said: "The French should not give rein to anger - our Muslim compatriots have nothing to do with the crazy actions of a terrorist. We should not embark on any stigmatisation."
It would help if the French Muslim community would roundly reject what Mr. Merah had been doing, but don't count on hearing so much as a peep...
Merah claimed to have received al-Qaeda training in Pakistan's Waziristan area, and also said he had been to Afghanistan.

Mr Gueant defended intelligence services for not preventing the attacks, describing Merah as a "lone wolf".
Ah yes, the 'lone wolf'. First he was described as a 'right-winger'. When that obviously wasn't true he was described as 'disturbed'. Now he's a 'lone wolf'. The authorities and the MSM will never describe as they should, however, because they can't bear to say what he is: an Islamicist.
"The domestic intelligence agency tracks a lot of people who are involved in Islamist radicalism. Expressing ideas... is not enough to bring someone before justice," Mr Gueant said.
But it would be good to bring him to justice before he kills a bunch of innocent people...
Christian Etelin, a lawyer who has previously acted for Merah, said his client had violent tendencies.

"There was his religious engagement, an increasing hatred against the values of a democratic society and a desire to impose what he believes is truth," Mr Etelin said. He also denied earlier reports that Merah had been jailed for explosives offensives in Afghanistan, saying his client was in jail in France for robbery with violence at the time - from December 2007 to September 2009.
"He was a quiet man. Except when he wasn't."

• Video surveillance equipment was sent into the flat and when it approached the bathroom Merah jumped out “all guns blazing” armed with a sub machine gun.
• After a fierce fire fight lasting around four minutes Merah jumped through the window of his apartment and over the balcony. As he did so he was shot in the head and died from his wounds.

Thai army admits to killing four Muslim villagers
Thailand's military Wednesday admitted troops had gunned down four Muslim villagers on their way to a funeral in the deep south due to a "misunderstanding" in late January. Four others were injured when a ranger unit opened fire on their pickup truck in Nongchik district of Pattani province.

The military ordered the withdrawal of the unit immediately after the incident and set up a panel including a local religious leader to investigate. A statement from the southern region army command said, "The incident in which on-duty security officials acted against civilians was likely caused by a misunderstanding resulting from the surrounding circumstances."

It said the incident occurred as troops were in pursuit of terrorists militants who had just attacked a ranger outpost, adding that it was up to the judiciary to determine the guilt of the rangers, regardless of the findings of the panel. The statement said, "All those who are involved with the incident will enter the justice process to ensure confidence and fairness from all sides."

In the latest violence, a ranger was killed by a roadside bomb early Wednesday in Cho-Ai-Rong district of Narathiwat province. Three others including two rangers and a villager were injured. The five kilogram bomb was hidden at the foot of a bridge and detonated by radio control after villagers had alerted rangers about a suspicious object.

Boko Haram rules out more talks with Nigerian govt
[Bangla Daily Star] A front man for Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. Currently wearing a false nose and moustache and answering to Jama'atu Ahlus-Sunnah Lidda'Awati Wal Jihad, or Big Louie...
has ruled out further talks with Nigeria's government after preliminary, indirect contacts aimed at ending scores of deadly attacks.

Abul Qaqa, who has claimed to speak on behalf of Boko Haram a number of times in the past, told journalists in a telephone conference late Tuesday that the government could not be trusted.

He did not give details, but a holy man who acted as an intermediary in the indirect talks, which were at a preliminary stage, said last weekend he would no longer do so because leaks to the media by the government showed it was insincere.

Block all anti-Islam stuff on FB
[Bangla Daily Star] The High Court yesterday directed the government to immediately block all pages, and links on website, especially of the Facebook, that are sharing sensitive cartoons and pictures against Islam.

In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to punish those who are responsible for publishing such contents on the website.

Secretaries to the ministries of home affairs and information, inspector general of police, director general of Rapid Action Battalion, and chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission have been made respondents to the rule.

The HC bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar came up with the rule following the petition jointly filed by Batool Sarwar, a teacher of Dhaka University, and M Nurul Islam, principal of Dhaka Centre for Law and Economics.

According to the petition, some pages, links and uniform resource locators of Facebook are showing cartoons and pictures hurting the religious sentiment of Mohammedans which is against the constitution of the republic.

Docs clash at hospital
[Bangla Daily Star] Two doctors were maimed in a fierce clash over establishing supremacy between rival factions
Internists versus surgeons?
of Swadhinata Chikitsak Gay Pareehad (SCP) at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) yesterday.
Every once in awhile the mind just boggles...
Both the groups of SCP, a pro-Awami League doctors' organization, attacked each other with hockey sticks, iron rods, wooden sticks and sharp weapons, witnesses said.
Oh, so it could have been psychiatrists...
At least two rooms including the registrar's one were vandalised while another doctor's room was put under lock during the clash.

Panic gripped the patients and their attendants during the one-hour-long chase and counter chase inside the country's largest hospital.

Dr Murad Hossain, an intern doctor, was hacked on his right hand while Dr Abdullah Tareq, medical officer of Directorate General of Health, was hacked on his head. They took treatment at the hospital and were out of danger, said Brig General Md Mostafizur Rahman, the DMCH director.

Dr Tareq, a former emergency medical officer of DMCH, came to the hospital to meet his former colleagues.

A group of doctors backed by Assistant Professor Dr Mazharul Haque Tapan, also executive member of the hospital's SCP convening committee, engaged into a heated argument with some members of SCP in the room of registrar of Medicine Department (Unit-3) around 1:30pm, said a doctor, who witnessed the incident.

At one point, they vandalised the registrar's room on the first floor of the hospital.

Marib Power Station manager relieved from duties
[Yemen Post] Well-informed sources said that the manager of the Marib Gas Power Station, Abdul-Rahman Fatahi, was relieved, as of Wednesday, from his duties of running the station affairs.

"Fatahi was sacked from his position as the manager of the Marib Electricity station, the biggest power station in the country, and his deputy, Mohammed Sabolan, was appointed to replace him, the sources said.

The decision came one day after the supply lines were targeted yet again that the station had to completely halt its operation, leaving thousands of households in the Yemeni capital of Sana'a deal with the inconvenience caused by the lengthy power outages.

A local source from Marib told Yemen Post on condition of anonymity that a military unit arrived on Tuesday in Jadan area, a district in the route connecting Sana'a to Marib where the lined were recently attacked, to deal with the saboteurs.

The military unit took control of the newly-established checkpoint, which was set by saboteurs with the aim of exercising acts of banditry and sabotage, and held talks with the local rustics, demanding they cooperate with the government in putting an end to sabotaging power supply lines, a local security source told Yemen Post on condition of anonymity.

"The military unit further negotiated with the saboteurs and asked them to stop their acts or else they would be held accountable for what they did.

"Initially the saboteurs, some 12 tribal thugs, stipulated some demands, however, the negotiation ended up in exchange of gunfire between the army and the saboteurs, leaving some of the latter maimed.

"The rest of the rustics beat a quick retreat as the army personnel appeared to be determined to knock some sense back into them," said the source.

The gunfire exchange was followed by a tribal dignitaries meeting in Jadan area, in which they agreed that they have to either disown the saboteurs, forcibly stop them from continuing their shameful deeds, or let army forces pursue them.

The residents of the Yemeni capital showed their satisfaction with the firm step taken by the leadership to track and pursue those responsible for targeting the basic services that they direly need.

Public Electricity Corporation promised on Wednesday that the power will be regularly back within a few hours.

Yemeni security forces arrest six Somali terrorists
[Yemen Post] Yemeni Interior Ministry revealed on Tuesday that it locked away six Somali nationals suspected of having ties with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula(AQAP).

In a statement released on its official website, Interior Ministry said that police troops managed to arrest six Somali bully boyz who were fighting with Ansar al-Sharia
...a Yemeni Islamist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends...
, al-Qaeda offshoot, in the southern war-torn province of Abyan.

The detainees were then moved to the security headquarters in the port city of Aden for further investigation, the statement said.

Investigation with the suspects is still underway, added the statement.

Last week, Yemen announced that about 300 Somali fighters from Shabaab al-Aslam smuggled into Yemen with the aim of reinforcing their fellow al-Qaeda terrorists.

Al-Qaeda strengthened its foothold in the southern provinces of the country, taking an advantage of the current unrest in the poorest Arab state.

On Sunday, AQAP cut-throats rubbed out an American teacher in the southern province of Taiz, underscoring USA concerns of the severity of the security situation in Yemen.

Yesterday, a tribal dignitary told Yemen Post that al-Qaeda gunnies, who kidnapped the Swiss English teacher, asked for 250 million RY ransom for releasing the hostage.

Even though, media outlets reported that the Swiss hostage was moved to Shabwa, al-Qaeda stronghold and hometown of the late Yemeni-American holy man Anwar al-Awalqi, her real whereabouts is still ambiguous.

Violent clashes between al-Qaeda, army in central Yemen
[Yemen Post] Violent festivities erupted Wednesday between al-Qaeda forces of Evil and units of Elite Republican Guards , and Central Security Forces in the central Yemeni province of Marib, local sources told Yemen Post.

Elite Republican Guards outposts, and military checkpoints were under fierce attacks by al-Qaeda myrmidons, according to local sources and eyewitnesses.

"Fierce festivities are ongoing right now," said a local tribal source who requested not to be named, indicating that different kinds of weapons are being used in the festivities.

On the outskirts of Marib province, military posts of Republican Guard, and Security forces are now under attack from all directions, according to the source.

The number of causalities has not yet been revealed.

On Tuesday, a military unit tasked with protecting the power supply lines clashed with some saboteurs in Jadan area of Marib, leaving two maimed.

Also yesterday afternoon, two soldiers were maimed when gunnies believed to be linked with al-Qaeda opened fire on them.

Al-Qaeda has stepped up its attacks on army institutions and personnel , probably taking an advantage of the one yearlong political deadlock.

Earlier the month, the forces of Evil carried out surprising attack on army outpost in the southern war-torn province of Abyan, killing more than 150 soldiers killed, and wounding dozens others. Not to mention that 72 were taken prisoners. In reaction, national war planes and US unmanned drones intensified their Arclight airstrikes targeting the terrorists' hideouts in the province.

The repeated attacks on the army is a reminder of the bad security situation the country has plunged into, with the Yemeni army is not able to defend itself let alone defend its people.

Security Council Adopts Statement Demanding Syria Carry Out Annan Peace Plan
[An Nahar] The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday adopted a presidential statement demanding that Syria "immediately" implement a peace plan proposed by U.N.-Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
envoy Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
and giving a veiled warning of international measures.

The statement, which has less weight than a formal resolution, says the Council will "consider further steps as appropriate" if Annan reports that the Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
government is not cooperating.

Following intense negotiations between the major powers, Russia and China signed up to a Western-drafted text which calls on Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Sonny, disguised as Fredo, trying to be Mike...
to work toward a cessation of hostilities and a democratic transition.

The statement gives strong backing to Annan and the six-point plan he put to Assad in talks in Damascus earlier this month.

Annan's plan calls for a U.N.-supervised halt to fighting with the government pulling troops and heavy weapons out of protest cities, a daily two-hour humanitarian pause to hostilities and access to all areas affected by the fighting.

U.N. chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
said in a speech to a defense conference in the Indonesian capital that Annan, who held talks in Damascus on March 10-11 and briefed the Security Council last week, was "working tirelessly."

The prepared text of Ban's speech released to media in Jakarta said Annan was expected to return soon to Damascus. The line was removed from the speech as delivered, and Ban did not give any timeframe for a return.

Martin Nesirky, a front man for Ban, told Agence La Belle France Presse: "The joint special envoy's technical team is still in Damascus, and he is still waiting to hear more details from them before he decides on his travel plans."

Gilani rules out resignation
[Pak Daily Times] Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday ruled out his resignation, saying he was representative of 180 million people of Pakistain and his resignation was no ordinary matter like a reshuffle in the cabinet.

"Cabinet reshuffle is a routine matter, my resignation is not," Gilani declared, while talking to the media after a ceremony. Replying to a query about contempt of court proceedings against him, the prime minister said the case was being heard in the Supreme Court that would decide the matter according to the law.

He also brushed aside the perception that his trial was causing political instability, saying his trial in the Supreme Court was in no way causing any such issues. "There is no need to worry... parliament, an independent judiciary and the media are functioning properly", he added.

Machinegun Rounds, Flares Fired from Syria Hit Lebanon's al-Bqaiaa
[An Nahar] Machinegun rounds, flares and percussion bombs were fired from the Syrian side of the border towards the stream of the Grand River on Wednesday, some of which landing in the northern Lebanese town of Bani Sakhr in al-Bqaiaa region, Leb's state-run National News Agency reported.

"Machinegun volleys struck several homes, causing no casualties, as a bomb landed in a grove," NNA quoted residents as saying."

The residents of several houses located near the Grand River, which separates the two countries, decamped towards the safer houses of their relatives in the nearby areas of Wadi Khaled and Mashta Hammoud, the agency said.

Meanwhile,

UK hostage Judith Tebbutt freed in Somalia
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] British hostage Judith Tebbutt, captured in Kenya over six months ago by gunnies who killed her husband, was released in central Somalia and flown out to Nairobi Wednesday, elders said.

The Foreign Office in London confirmed the release, saying the "priority now is to get her to a place of safety."
Isn't that what's supposed to happen when a hostage is released? Somebody put the cart before the horse?
Tebbutt, 57, was taken on September 11 last year from a remote beach resort near the Kenyan-Somali border by gunnies who rubbed out her husband David.

"The British lady who was kidnapped from Kenya was just released," said Mahmoud Hirsi, an elder in the Addado region. "She is a free woman, but I cannot discuss the technical details of her release."

Abdiwali Ahmed, a resident of Addado, said Tebbutt had left Somalia on a small airplane bound for the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

"The plane had the hostage and three other people on board," he said.

#1  Above link doesn't work for me.
From the BBC:
A British hostage has been freed in Somalia, six months after she was seized and her husband killed in Kenya.

Judith Tebbutt, 56, from Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, was flown to Nairobi after her family paid the pirates a ransom for her release. Prime Minister David Cameron's spokesman said the government would provide consular care in Nairobi. He said it did not pay ransoms and did not "facilitate concessions to hostage takers", but had met the family regularly to discuss the case.BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said a private security company had secured her release, not British officials.

He said it was unclear how much money was involved, and revealing the amount was generally discouraged to avoid copy-cat gangs.

Paying the ransom was not illegal because it was not known to be going to a terrorist organisation, he added. Rick Blears of Save Our Seafarers, the global anti-Somali piracy campaign, said that "any move at government level to ban the payment of ransoms to pirates, as US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton proposes, would have a massively detrimental effect and put the lives of hostages at grave risk".

He would say that - probably onto a nice little earner, so long as the pirates stay in business.

The same defence could have been used to try to prevent the Royal Navy from being ordered to force an end to the slave trade: 'slaves in transit will be killed if they can't be sold'; thus the problem would have been kept going indefinitely. What nonsense. Payment of ransoms is direct funding of criminal activity. Ransom payers should be prosecuted by whatever means possible, while hostage takers in lawless states should be given the option of releasing their captives unharmed, or face summary execution.

India-Pakistan
Polio crisis
[Dawn] IT is a matter of national shame that the polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
virus still threatens the children of Pakistain, despite several years of intensified eradication efforts. It reflects poorly on the Pak state and society; perhaps the reason for the campaign's failure is that the state has not treated polio as the crisis it is. The World Health Organisation has recently warned that a polio outbreak is imminent in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
. Bara tehsil of Khyber Agency, where security forces are battling the hard boys, has, in fact, had no vaccination campaign since September 2009 and is the only place in Asia where type-3 polio cases were reported in 2011 and 2012.

As highlighted by the WHO warning, the volatile security situation is perhaps the main imperative behind immunising children in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in the province's conflict zones, as well as the neighbouring tribal belt. Yet there are other factors as well, such as lack of satisfactory coverage in areas not considered conflict zones. While the anti-polio policy might appear effective on paper, its implementation leaves much to be desired. The WHO suggestion that checkpoints be set up at locations where families fleeing the conflict pass through should be implemented so that vulnerable children can be immunised, while countrywide efforts should be made to target mobile populations. Four polio sanctuaries have been identified in Pakistain -- Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, Quetta, Qila Abdullah and Pishin. Concentrated efforts are needed to immunise children under five in these regions, especially in Bloody Karachi and Quetta, where accessibility is not generally an issue. Successive governments have failed to involve mosques and schools in anti-polio campaigns; this shortcoming must be addressed, as the persuasive powers of the pulpit are considerable in this country. If semi-literate holy mans can spread baseless propaganda about the polio vaccine, legitimate scholars can surely be brought on board to emphasise the necessity of getting children vaccinated. Public figures in general should get involved in anti-polio efforts, while men should be convinced about the need to vaccinate children as they are the decision-makers in most Pak families.

PPP, PAC men booked for triple murder
[Dawn] A local leader of the Pakistain People's Party and several members of the defunct People's Amn Committee were booked for killing three men, including a Kuchhi Rabita Committee leader, police said on Tuesday.

KRC leader Abdul Rasheed Kuchhi along with his guard Zubair Kuchhi and Assistant Sub-Inspector Muhammad Khalil was bumped off in Agra Taj Colony on March 18.

The police said that the FIR in connection with the triple murder was lodged late on Monday night at the Kalri cop shoppe on a complaint of KRC leader Ibrahim, who was also maimed in the attack.

The FIR (67/2012) was lodged under Sections 302 (premeditated murder), 324 (attempted murder), 109 (abetment) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The police said that the complainant nominated PPP leader Habib Jan Baloch, PAC leader Zafar Baloch, Police Inspector Yousuf Baloch, Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
gangster Baba Ladla's two brothers -- Zahid Ladla and Tahir Ladla -- and other Lyari gangsters including Rahim alias Darinda, Sikandar alias Sikku, Omar Kuchhi and two unidentified persons.

No arrest has so far been made.

Meanwhile,
...back at the hoedown, Bob finally got to dance with Sally...
Interior Minister Rehman Malik
Pak politician, current Interior Minister under the Gilani administration. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. He later joined the Pak Peoples Party and was chief security officer to Bhutto. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. By unhappy coincidence Nawaz Sharif became PM at just that moment and Malik moved to London one step ahead of the button men.
also visited parts of Lyari, including Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai Road, Mirza Adam Khan Road and Cheel Chowk, in the small hours of Tuesday and appreciated the performance of the law-enforcement agencies and asked them to continue their efforts.

8,000 Mexican troops deploy to Michoacan
For a map, click here. For a map of Michoacan state, click here

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

The Mexican Secretaria de Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) and President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa said Wednesday that a total of 8,000 troops have been moved to Michoacan state, according to Mexican news and official accounts.

Calderon and General Guillermo Galvan Galvan were at the opening ceremony of a base that will house the newly raised Mexican 25th Motorized Cavalry Regiment in Tiquicheo, Michoacan in southern Michoacan.

Michoacan governor Fausto Vallejo Figueroa, Mexican Secretaria Armada de Mexico (SEMAR), Admiral Mariano Francisco Saynez Mendoza and commander of the XII Military Region, General de Division Ruben Venzor Arellano and commander of the 21st Military Zone, General Juan Antonio Bernal were also in attendance.

The unit's total compliment is 600 soldiers and 60 vehicles. Much of the unit's cadre and officers were experienced soldiers moved from other motorized cavalry units. Colonel Juan Lopez Sanchez is the unit's commander.

The physical location of the base is near the tri-border area, with Mexico state to the east and Guerrero state to the south. Tiquicheo is astride Mexico Federal highway 49 which connects Morelia, the capital of Michoacan, with Toluca, the capital of Mexico state, as well as Distrito Federal farther east.

Michoacan now rivals Tamaulipas as one of the most heavily fortified states in Mexico. A total of 8,000 Mexican Army troops, an undisclosed number of Naval Infantry units and about 1,500 Policia Federal (PF) effectives have been deployed to Tamaulipas since the start of the year, mostly to the north near the border crossings with the US.

Many of those forces were redeployed from other southern states as diverse as Zacatecas and Chiapas.

It is unclear from news accounts just how many troops were moved, and from where to Michoacan. The state last experienced an upsurge in security forces deployed because of the November 13th gubernatorial elections. About 1,800 PF effectives were deployed to Michoacan in July, 2011, along with undisclosed numbers of Mexican Army and Naval Infantry forces. The PF deployment came with about 170 vehicles including armored cars, 15 ambulances and four helicopters, including US-made Blackhawk utility and Russian made MI-17Sh helicopters. PF troops generally do not announce when they leave so it is unknown if those troops remain in the state.

The increases in troops strengths in many of Mexico's trouble spots comes a year after a total of 18 infantry battalions were raised by SEDENA to deal with the problem of exhausted units. Prior to the raising of the new units, some army units in the field had not been been relieved in months. The new forces presumably will allow Mexican Army units to rest, refit and retrain, giving military zone and region commanders better flexibility.

Up until last year Michoacan was considered to be La Familia de Michoacana territory. Since that time, some members of the criminal group were captured, some were killed fighting Mexican security forces, while others split off and formed a new criminal gang Los Caballeros Templarios or Knights Templars. The losses suffered by La Familia at the time were so severe as to cause PF spokesman Luis Cardenas Palomino to claim the group was finished.

In fact, several narcopintas allegedly put up by La Familia members announced the group's intention to go out of business in December, 2010.

And now, according to a recent posting in BorderlandBeat.com the Jalisco Nuevo Generacion drug cartel, itself having lost two of its top leaders, has announced its intention of destroying Los Caballeros Templarios. Jalisco Nuevo Generacion's territory is Jalisco state, which borders Michaocan to the east. Some small groups of Jalisco Nuevo Generacion cartel operatives are known to already operate in eastern parts of Michoacan.

Freed Uk Reporters: Libyans Thought We Were Israeli Spies
British journalists say their bandages had Welsh writing on them, but captors mistook it for Hebrew

Two British journalists who were released over the weekend by a Libyan militia after being jugged for a month were thought to be spies because their captors confused Welsh with Hebrew, The Telegraph reported Tuesday.

Nicholas Davies-Jones and Gareth Montgomery-Johnson, who were working for Iran's English-language Press TV, were jugged on Feb 22 by the Swehli brigade, one of the dozens of militias which helped force out Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffy
... who is now napping peacefully in the dirt...
last year.

Earlier this month, the Swehli militia said the Britons, initially jugged for illegal entry into Libya, were suspected of spying, The Telegraph reported. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
they were transferred to the custody of the government last week.

The news hounds said five days after they had been jugged, the militia had gone to their hotel to find footage and began looking through equipment and the archive material.

"My father, who's a nurse, had given me some bandages in case we got into trouble. Some had Welsh written on and they thought this was Hebrew and we were Israeli spies," Montgomery-Johnson told BBC 5Live.

Bangladesh
Ring leader Gama killed
[Bangla Daily Star] -- Zulfikar Ali Gama, kingpin of notorious gang 'Gama Bahini', died in an encounter with police in Mongla yesterday.
Not quite a 'cross-fire'...
They don't do cross-fires any more. A judge got upset because the miscreants weren't getting proper trials, so he told the Rab to cut it out. They turned to encountering instead, and the police slavishly followed suite.
"Say, Sergeant Choudhary, lookie who we just [BANG] encountered!"
"Nice work men. Place the body on 'the spot' and fetch the shutter gun."
Sagar, 30, a constable of Mongla Police Station, was bullet-hit
by his own guys
during the encounter that took place from 3:30pm to 4:00pm at Narkelbari of the Sundarbans East Zone in Mongla upazila.
Not one idea where that is.
Acting on secret information
Another ten-spot to Mahmoud the Weasel...
that Gama built a dwelling house
Is that like a secret lair?
at Narkelbari and was hiding there
Hiding in his own house? Where does he think he is, Phoenix?
along with some of his cohorts,
Maybe they were shooting pool in the basement...
a team, led by Mongla thana officer Nikhil Chandra Mandal, raided the house at 3:30pm.
Gama should have been at the office...
Gama made a vain attempt to flee
Hard to flee when you've a bullet behind each ear...
by firing from his pistol
"Take that ya dirty coppers!"
at the advancing police force, triggering a shootout which lasted for about 30 minutes.
From which not a single piece of forensic evidence was recovered...
At one stage, police stormed into the house overpowering Gama and his gangs, and placed in durance vile him in injured condition. His cohorts managed to escape.
As if they'd never been there in the first place...
Constable Sagar received bullet wound in the line of fire and was rushed to Mongla Hospital.
"Can't youse guys learn to shoot straight? Cheez, my own guys!"
Bagerhat
Is that like the Elks Club?
Superintendent of Police Khandakar Rafiqul Islam said Gama succumbed to his multiple bullet wounds at the hospital at 9:00pm.
He actually succumbed a few minutes before the police dumped his body on the 'spot', but 9 pm at the hospital is as good a time as any for the records.
Gama, 36, was the son of Rashid Hawlader of Sonatala village of Mongla.
They fail to name his mother, who doubtless didn't love him...
A foreign-made 9mm pistol and five bullets were recovered from Gama's body possession.

Shamp Clong8416, you most certainly have permission to upload a graphic as part of your comment. The limitation is that it must be suitable for a family website -- there are school kids who read this site, so it ought not shock your ten year old daughter.

Fred thoughtfully put an icon for images on the bar below the comment bar -- it's that rectangular thingy, the last icon to the right. Clicking on it will enter the following HTML string in angle brackets: img src= valign=top align=right /. You'll need to paste the URL in quotes after src=. You should then have

img src="http://xxxxxx.jpg" valign=top align=right /

in angle brackets.

Please, please, please preview your post before submitting, to make sure it worked. I think my advice will work, but I cannot promise I got it all right -- this post is a request to our readers to either confirm or correct my errors.

Relatedly, I seem to recall that YouTube videos are submitted in comments as a link, attaching to a key word/phrase of the submitter's choice (highlight the word, click on the blue world icon in the icon bar, enter the YouTube's URL, then click OK.) Again, please preview to make sure it worked. Good luck!

Six Mexican Army soldiers were hurt in a traffic accident and another grenade attack was made, this time against Mexican military personnel in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas Wednesday, according to Mexican news accounts.

The new grenade attack is another in a series of attacks that have taken place in Tamaulipas' capital city since last week. Reports are unclear who the target was in the Wednesday grenade attack. No one was hurt and no damage was reported from the attack, which took place at 1100 hrs was near the bus station.

The traffic accident involved six soldiers who were hurt when a Sand Cat armored peronnel carrier overturned on Avenida Juan B. Tijerina at around 1000 hrs. The mishap closed the area for three hours.

Reports also say a number of gunfights have taken place on Libramiento Naciones Unidas and on calles Berriozabal, Anaya and Aldama in Libertad and Emilio Portes Gil colonies. No reports have been released detailing casualties or detentions following those gunfights.

The security detail for Tamaulipas governor Egidio Torre Cantu was reportedly on high alert before the latest attacks. Ten schools were also let out mid morning because of the shootings.

The latest reports on the car bomb near Expreso newspaper offices in Zona Contro Monday said it was a grenade attack.

Last week four unidentified individuals were killed in a series of grenade and small arms attacks in Ciudad Victoria, including grenade attacks at a Nissan dealership, a police academy building and shootings in two other incidents.

A week before the March 14 attacks, four unidentified individuals were found dead along the road to San Luis Potosi.

#4  Think about it. When launching from Cape Canaveral, we launch toward the east. Why? because the surface of the Earth is going pretty fast toward the east. That's why the sun rises there. So rockets launched in an easterly direction can use their speed already provided by the earth's rotation to get to orbital speed or escape velocity. It's a bonus.
Now, what's east of Nork? What's west of Nork? If you were going to put up a satellite, which way would you launch if you wanted to do it efficiently? Riiiight. Over China. Not over Japan.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
70 Dead as Syrian Forces Blast Last Rebel Bastion in Homs
[An Nahar] Syrian army troops rained shells on the Homs district of Khaldiyeh on Wednesday and killed at least 70 people across the country, activists said.

"Khaldiyeh is being bombed, with shells and rockets, for a second day," Hadi Abdullah of the Syrian Revolution General Commission told Agence La Belle France Presse, reached by telephone from Beirut.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitoring group, said at least five non-combatants were killed and dozens maimed in Wednesday's shelling, a day after 14 non-combatants were killed in the same district.

It said two children were among the latest deaths.

"Every five minutes from 8 am (0600 GMT), between three and seven shells have come crashing down," said another witness, who added that casualties were dying in makeshift field clinics for lack of medical equipment.

Abdullah said he feared a repeat of the month-long battering that killed hundreds in the Baba Amr district of Homs before the army moved in on March 1 after a pullout by the Free Syrian Army (FSA), made up mostly of army deserters.

He said thousands of residents who decamped Baba Amr and other neighborhoods of the city in central Syria had taken refuge in Khaldiyeh, "the last front left" in Homs.

"Four or five families are crammed into each house. People are also sheltering in mosques and unfinished buildings," he said.

Also in Homs, activists uncovered 39 bodies in the Rifai sector of town, said Abdullah. They had probably been killed at the same time as the 48 women and kiddies whose mutilated bodies the FSA found in Homs on March 12.

At the time, the opposition charged it was a massacre carried out by government forces after their capture of Baba Amr, while Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
said it was the work of "armed terrorist gangs," which it blames for the year-long revolt.

Sixteen of the bodies in the latest find all came from the same family, said the activist on the ground.

The Observatory said four soldiers were killed on Wednesday in the Sultaniyeh district of the city, while four civilians had been also killed in the town of Talbisseh, in the province of Homs.

The Local Coordination Committees, the main activist group spurring protests on the ground, said security forces killed 70 people across the country, including 14 children and seven women.

Forty people were killed in the central province of Homs, 12 in the central province of Hama, seven in the northwestern province of Idlib, six in the southern province of Daraa, two in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, one in the northeastern province of al-Raqqa and another in the Damascus suburb of Muadhmiyat al-Sham, the LCC said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the precinct house, Sergeant Maloney wasn't buying it. It was just too pat. It smelled phony...
regime troops surrounded Taftanaz and opened fire on rebels in the town in Idlib province, rebel sources said, adding that outnumbered FSA withdrew.

Rebel fighters, lightly armed, have been on the retreat from cities since the start of March in the face of the far superior firepower of government forces.

Overnight, fierce festivities erupted in the Damascus suburb of Harasta between rebels and security forces near an air force intelligence post, the Observatory said. It reported heavy machinegun fire, without giving a casualty toll.

Deadly twin suicide car boomings targeting security buildings in Damascus on Saturday killed 27 people, the interior ministry said.

An Islamist group, the Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant, grabbed credit for the car boomings to avenge the Syrian regime's "massacre of Sunnis," in a statement posted online.

Syria's state news agency SANA said an unspecified number of security officials and non-combatants were killed in a suicide car booming on Tuesday in the southern province of Daraa, cradle of the uprising.

Two policemen shot dead in Quetta
[Pak Daily Times] Unidentified gunnies bumped off two police personnel in the scenic provincial capital's Jinnah Town area on Wednesday.

According to police, the two victims, constable Nematullah and Liaqat, were on duty at a picket line at Jinnah Town's Smungli Road when armed assailants riding a cycle of violence opened fire on them and decamped from the scene.

As a result, both was struck down in his prime. The bodies of the dear departed were handed over to the heirs after legal formalities were completed.

Police started the paperwork but haven't done much else and have started their investigation into the incident.

Capital City Police Officer Ehsan Mehboob said the shooting was a targeted attack and the culprits will soon be brought to book.

...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
virus was not contained, it could face serious consequences such as travel and visa restrictions and sanctions imposed by countries across the world.

Dr Bruce Aylward, Assistant Director-General of Polio, Emergencies and Country Collaboration, WHO, told Dawn after a presser organised by country office of WHO that lately the global community had been expressing its anxiety over the widespread prevalence of the virus in Pakistain.

"Why would countries that have invested millions of dollars for the eradication of polio tolerate any possibility of the virus traveling from Pakistain to their country," the key global official of the WHO rationalised, and elaborated: "Some countries in their individual capacities want to impose travel restrictions that are not in the benefit of Pakistain and must be avoided. It must be clarified that WHO is not a party to any of those plans."

Dr Aylward said that many countries were asking for steps similar to those taken by Soddy Arabia. "Soddy Arabia has issued a special travel advisory for Pakistain pilgrims that requires Pak authorities to ensure that all visitors to Soddy Arabia are vaccinated. Hence, visitors are expected to be vaccinated before they leave Pakistain and also get vaccinated once they arrive at their airports."

Arabia
Hadi forms higher committee for media policies
[Yemen Post] President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi has directed to from a higher committee to draw media policies that harmonize with the current transition stage, media sources said on Tuesday.

They said this move came after the General People Congress headed by the former President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
threatened to withdraw from the interim government in protest at attacks by Prime Minster Mohammad Salem Basindowa against Saleh.

The media office of Hadi called on Tuesday all political forces to self-restriction, pointing out that the global community closely watch the political settlement in Yemen.

Sources said that the GPC threatened during the past few days to withdraw his members participating in the consensus government with the aim of breaking down its performances.

They further said that Hadi intervened and directed 16 ministers of the GPC to attend a cabinet session on Tuesday.

The ministers demanded Basindowa to apologize about remarks in which he accused saleh of standing behind the killing of 58 protesters and wounding hundreds others on what is known as Al-Karama Friday( Dignity Friday) on March 18.

Leaders and parliamentarians of the GPC strongly attacked Basindowa, demanding to withdraw the confidence from his government.

News reports had stated that differences between Hadi and Saleh escalated particularly after Saleh said in a speech before a rally of his supporters that the power transfer was conspiracy.

They further said that the big shot of the GPC, Abdul-Karim Al-Iriany, seeks to mediate between Saleh and Hadi, pointing out that Al-Irian held separate meetings with both men.

Conflict ratchets up with 11 kidnapped in Michoacan

For a map, click here. For a map of Michoacan state, click here

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

A total of 11 villagers in Michoacan state have been kidnapped, according to Mexican news accounts.

A news release published in Quandratin.com by the group called Radio Fogata Cheran or Cheran Radio Bonfire said the victims were all from the villages of Ceresito, El Rancho Seco and El Rancho Moleros. Demands in the news release include blocking all access by road to Cheran and a press conference to detail abuses committed against them. It is unclear who has taken the kidnapping victims.

Cheran is a municipality in northern Michoacan located about 100 kilometers southeast of Guadalajara, Jalisco, inhabited by indigenous Indians.

Included in the number kidnapped are two teachers and four women. The action takes place as villagers in Cheran have attempted to place roadblocks in their area to stop criminal groups they say are engaged in "illegal logging".

The group has come under criticism for allegedly hijacking heavy vehicles such as fuel tanker trucks and "milking" them for fuel. Accusations against the group also includes hijacking buses to avoid paying bus fare to the state capital, Morelia, to attend protests. The group has also installed "toll booths" within their municipality demanding payment from motorists.

The conflict between Cheran and presumably commercial logging interests began two years ago. Other actions taken by the indigenous community included refusal to participate in the elections last November in Michoacan state.
How clever of them to ensure nobody has a stake in resolving the situation in their favour.

Six Darfur rebels sentenced to death
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A Sudanese court on Tuesday sentenced six members of a key Darfur rebel group to hang after convicting them of terrorism and criminal charges, a lawyer said.

A seventh defendant, also from the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), was locked away for 10 years, lawyer Tahani Abdelrahim said. Abdelrahim said the sentences will be appealed.

The government announced two years ago that the seven were captured in West Darfur after a battle.

About 100 relatives of the accused attended the hearing at a downtown Khartoum court but everyone, including journalists, was ordered out for the sentencing by Judge Moutasim Tajalsir.

Abdelrahim said the accused stood and shouted in praise of JEM's late leader Khalil Ibrahim as they heard the verdict.

"Khalil is a martyr. We are following his path," she quoted them as saying.
He died too...
Government forces said they killed Ibrahim in December. His brother took over as leader of the movement.

JEM front man Gibril Adam Bilal condemned the death sentences against its "prisoners of war" and called on the international community to ensure the punishment is not carried out.

One of those condemned to hang is from South Sudan.

More than 100 JEM rebels received the death penalty after the movement staged an unprecedented march to the outskirts of Khartoum's twin city Omdurman in 2008 before being repulsed.

President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.

later remitted many of the sentences.

Bashir and Defence Minister Abdelrahim Mohammed Hussein are wanted by the International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
for alleged crimes committed in Darfur.

In 2003, JEM and other rebels drawn from Darfur's non-Arab tribes rose up against the Arab-dominated Khartoum government. In response, the regime unleashed state-backed Janjaweed militia in a conflict that shocked the world and led to allegations of genocide. Since then, much of the violence has degenerated into banditry.

#5  ...Reminds me of when I was at USAF Basic Training in 1978, and the new school commander - a former POW - formed every last trainee up to address the growing problem of people passing out on parade. He put it quite simply: anyone doing so without a damned good medical reason would be recycled back to Day One, even if it was your graduation parade. He laid it out very clearly in words I've never forgotten: he had been a POW in North Vietnam for four years and was tortured repeatedly without ever giving them the satisfaction of passing out. If he could do it under those circumstances, we could too.

After the first couple folks found themselves at Day One, it stopped.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Religious group claims Syria bombs 'to avenge Sunnis'
[Dawn] A religious group grabbed credit for last weekend's suicide car boomings in central Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
to avenge the Syrian regime's "massacre of Sunnis," in a statement posted online on Wednesday.

Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant, in the statement on their websites, said its cut-throats carried out "a series of military operations... especially the air force security" buildings of the "criminal regime" in Damascus.

The attacks were "in response to the continued shelling by the regime of residential districts of Homs, Idlib, Hama and Daraa," it said, listing major centres of opposition across Syria.

"We will later respond to the crimes carried out by the regime" in the central city of Homs, it warned, demanding that the regime, led by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, "stop its massacres of Sunnis."

AFP could not verify the authenticity of the statement.

The Al-Nusra Front to Protect the Levant first emerged at the end of February to claim suicide kabooms in Damascus and Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, Syria's second largest city.

The group said the attacks were "to avenge the people of Homs" besieged by regime forces.

A video posted on jihadist forums showed footage of the destruction caused by the January 6 car attack in Damascus that killed 26 people, and by a twin suicide car booming in Aleppo on February 10 that killed 28 people.

A double suicide car booming targeting security installations in Damascus on Saturday killed 27 people, the interior ministry said, a day before a similar attack killed two more in Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub.

Syria blamed the bombings on "armed terrorist gangs" which it holds responsible for the year-old bloodshed in the country that monitors say has cost more than 9,100 lives in a brutal crackdown on dissent.

It has also pointed to an al Qaeda role in the violence, while opposition activists have accused the Damascus regime of stage-managing attacks such as the car boomings to cause inter-sectarian strife.

According to the US-based monitors SITE Intelligence Group, the terror network came out on January 23 with a message calling for armed struggle against the regime.

Last month, US spy chief James Clapper said al Qaeda's branch in Iraq had probably carried out the January and February suicide kabooms in Syria, having infiltrated rebel forces fighting Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
's regime.

The kabooms "had all the earmarks of an al Qaeda-like attack," Clapper said at the time. "And so we believe al Qaeda in Iraq is extending its reach into Syria."

Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
has also expressed support for Syrian rebels.

-Election 2012
Romney sets sights on Obama after Illinois win
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] White House hopeful Mitt Romney
...whose real first name is actually, no kidding, Willard, was governor of Massachussetts and is currently the front-runner for president on the Publican ticket. He is the son of the former governor of Michigan, George Romney, who himself ran for president after saving American Motors from failure, though not permanently. Romney's foot is in an ideological bucket because of Romneycare, a state-level experiment that should have been a warning against Obamacare if anyone had been paying attention. Romney's charisma is best defined as soporific, which is probably why he is leading the Publican field...
set his sights squarely on President Barack Obama
This is a teachable moment...
after racking up another victory in the plodding Republican nominating race.
...after Santorum so considerately self-destructed...
Romney's decisive win in Illinois Tuesday likely won't help him win Obama's home state in the November 6 election, but it has brought him closer to clinching the Republican nod.

He used his victory speech to attack Obama's economic policies and cast the November 6 general election as a choice between "economic freedom" and "job-killing regulation."

"Over the past three years this administration has been engaged in an all-out assault on our freedom," Romney told supporters gathered in an affluent Chicago suburb.

"It's time to say these words. This word. Enough. We've had enough."

Underdog Rick Santorum
...candidate for president and former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. He was a lawyer before becoming the Representative for suburban Pittsburgh in 1991. He lost his Senate seat in 2006 to Bob Casey, a Democrat machine politician and political dynast. Santorum is a social conservative whose primary attraction is seemingly that he is neither Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich...
was unbowed by Romney's widening lead, telling supporters in his home state of Pennsylvania "we'll close this gap and on to victory!"

His campaign vowed earlier Tuesday to take the fight all the way to the Republican convention in August, but it's not clear if Santorum will be able to stop Romney from winning the 1,144 delegates needed to clinch the deal before then.

The former Massachusetts governor already had a commanding delegate lead and Tuesday's resounding win in this midwestern state will provide Romney with momentum ahead of contests in Wisconsin, Maryland and Washington, DC on April 3.

If he insulted the guy outright, he wouldn't come back, and he would't continue to discredit himself. And Bill's line could be read two ways. I prefer to read it as "We laugh at you because you don't know when you're being an idiot." And by saying it, Bill feels the guy doesn't have the brains to know when he's being insulted.

Europe
Lather, Rinse, and Repeat
By Mark Steyn

The killer of French schoolchildren and soldiers turns out to be a man called Mohammed Merah. The story can now proceed according to time-honored tradition:

Stage One: The strange compulsion to assure us that the killer is a “right wing conservative extremist,” in the words of NRO commenter ExpatAsia, echoed by Chrisman and Galt’s Bain. Up north, this view was shared by Canada’s most prominent establishment Jew and the Liberal Party attack poodle Warren Kinsella (whom NR readers may recall from my free-speech cover story, which mentioned the groveling apology he was forced to make to “the Chinese community” after an unfortunately sinophobic cat joke). The insistence that the killer was emblematic of an epidemic of right-wing hate sweeping the planet is, regrettably, no longer operative. Instead, the killer isn’t representative of anything at all.

So on to Stage Two: Okay, he may be called Mohammed but he’s a “lone wolf.” Sure, he says he was trained by al-Qaeda, but what does he know? Don’t worry, folks, he’s just a lone wolf like Major Hasan and Faisal Shahzad and all the other card-carrying members of the Amalgamated Union of Lone Wolves. All jihad is local.

On to Stage Three: Okay, even if there are enough lone wolves around to form their own Radio City Rockette line, it’s still nothing to do with Islam. I’m sad to see the usually perceptive Ed West of the London Telegraph planting his flag on this wobbling blancmange.

And then, of course, Stage Four: The backlash that never happens. Because apparently the really bad thing about dead Jews is that it might lead to dead non-Jews: “French Muslims Fear Backlash After Shooting.” Likewise, after Major Hasan’s mountain of dead infidels, “Shooting Raises Fears For Muslims In US Army.” Likewise, after the London Tube slaughter, “British Muslims Fear Repercussions After Tomorrow’s Train Bombing.” Oh, no, wait, that’s a parody, though it’s hard to tell.

Look, pace Ed West, isn’t it just a teensy-weensy little bit to do with Islam? Or at any rate the internal contradictions of one-way multiculturalism? No, it’s not a competition. Most times in today’s Europe, the guys beating, burning and killing Jews will be Muslims. Once in a while, it will be somebody else killing the schoolkids. But is it so hard to acknowledge that rapid, transformative, mass Muslim immigration might not be the most obvious aid to social tranquility? That it might possibly pose challenges that would otherwise not have existed — for uncovered women in Oslo, for gays in Amsterdam, for Jews everywhere? Is it so difficult to wonder if, for these and other groups living in a long-shot social experiment devised by their rulers, the price of putting an Islamic crescent in the diversity quilt might be too high? What’s left of Jewish life in Europe is being extinguished remorselessly, one vandalized cemetery, one subway attack at a time. How many Jewish children will be at that school in Toulouse a decade hence? A society that becomes more Muslim eventually becomes less everything else. What is happening on the Continent is tragic, in part because it was entirely unnecessary.

Clinton warns Assad to implement UN plan
[Dawn] US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Dean Acheson ...
on Wednesday praised the UN statement on Syria and warned Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
to carry out the peace plan or face "increasing pressure."

Clinton said that the long-divided UN Security Council has taken "a positive step" after it adopted a statement demanding that Syria immediately implement a peace plan proposed by former secretary general Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN.
"To President Assad and his regime, we say, along with the rest of the international community, take this path, commit to it, or face increasing pressure and isolation," Clinton told news hounds.

Clinton called for the plan to be implemented by "all Syrians who love their country and respect its history and understand the tremendous potential that working together provides."

Bangladesh
Jamaat leader Azharul shown arrested in 8 other cases
[Bangla Daily Star] Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
acting general secretary ATM Azharul Islam and its six activists were yesterday shown set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock in eight cases filed in connection with assault on police and placed on remand in two of the cases.

The cases were filed with Ramna, Paltan and Motijheel cop shoppes on different dates in 2010 and 2011 in connection with torching and vandalising vehicles, assault on coppers and preventing them from discharging their duties.

Azhar and the other six accused were set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock on September 19 last year and had been charged in five other cases filed with Ramna and Paltan cop shoppes. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
the High Court granted them bail in all the cases.

Deputy Commissioner Monirul Islam of the Detective Branch of Police said last Tuesday they set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock Azhar again as he walked out of Dhaka Central Jail on High-Court bail and that they had not disclosed the arrest that day.

Showing the seven set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock in the eight assault-on-police cases, the DB produced the arrestees before a Dhaka court yesterday seeking a 10-day remand in the case filed with Ramna Police Station.

Metropolitan Magistrate Assaduzzaman Nur, however, granted a three-day remand of the arrestees.

In an assault-on-police case filed with Motijheel Police Station, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque placed them on a one-day remand.

The same court yesterday granted them bail in two other cases filed with Paltan and Motijheel cop shoppes and fixed April 2 for hearing on a remand prayer in the remaining four cases.

The six others, who were shown set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock in the eight cases following appeals submitted by the investigation officers, include Abul Kashem, Ashrafuzzaman, Mohammad Redwan, Nasir Ullah, Abul Mannan and Asif Hossain.

Protection for conversion controversy girl ordered
[Dawn] The Sindh High Court on Tuesday directed the Sindh police chief to provide protection to a girl embroiled in a conversion controversy and to implement a previous court order.

The counsel for Rinkle Kumari, who according to one of her relatives was allegedly kidnapped and forced to convert to Islam before being married off to Syed Naveed Shah, moved a contempt of court application in court.

The girl had identified herself as Syeda Faryal Bibi during a presser she held recently at the Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...

The lawyer submitted that the high court had sent the girl to a state-run shelter on March 12 with the direction to its administration not to allow her parents or the man who claimed to be her husband to meet her till March 26, when she would be produced before the Supreme Court.

French 'shooter' vows to post videos online
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] French police said today they were probing a call made to a news channel by a man claiming to be the killer of seven people, who said footage of the attacks would soon be on the Internet.

The call to the La Belle France 24 news channel came just two hours before police cornered a suspect who made exactly the same claims as the caller -- that he was linked to Al-Qaeda and his crimes were Dire Revenge™ for Paleostinian deaths.

"He said he was affiliated with Al-Qaeda and that it was only the beginning ... that everything was filmed ... and that it would be on the web shortly," the journalist who took the call at La Belle France 24 told AFP.

On Monday, officials said witnesses to a deadly attack on a Jewish school in which a religious studies teacher and three children were killed saw the gunman wearing a video camera in a harness on his chest.

"Either I will go prison with my head held high or I will die with a smile," the caller to La Belle France 24 said, according to journalist Ebba Kalondo.

He also said he wanted to take Dire Revenge™ for the ban on wearing the full Islamic veil in public in La Belle France and for La Belle France's participation in the war in Afghanistan, she said.

Officials said that the man holed up in the Toulouse flat had also said he had acted to punish La Belle France for its foreign military interventions.

The call came at midnight local time on Tuesday, just two hours before police special forces in the south-western city of Toulouse surrounded an apartment block where a suspected Islamist myrmidon was holed up.

Officials said suspect Mohamed Merah, a 23-year-old French citizen of Algerian descent who has visited Afghanistan and Pakistain, bragged of being in Al-Qaeda and said he acted to avenge the deaths of Paleostinian children.

Police sources said Sherlocks were taking the 11-minute call to La Belle France 24 seriously, but could not confirm it was the same man.

Mr Gueant said there had been no contact overnight with Mohammed Merah and it was not certain he was alive.

Police set off regular explosions overnight to increase the pressure on 23-year-old Merah.

Mexican Army bags 7 bad guys in Nuevo Laredo

Rantburg.com

A total of seven armed suspects were killed in a gunfight near Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas with a unit of the Mexican Army, according to Mexican news accounts.

Reports are unclear when the gun battle took place.

The army unit was apparently on road patrol on Mexico Federal highway 2 at about Kilometer 17 when it came under small arms fire. Army return fire killed seven. Four other armed suspects were detained following the gunfight.

Soldiers in the aftermath seized seven rifles, 47 weapons magazines and 947 rounds of ammunition and two vehicles.

A total of six armed suspects were killed in a running gunfight between Mexican Army forces and presumed shooters with the Los Zetas criminal group March 13th in western Nuevo Laredo. That battle led to the capture of Los Zetas leader Carlos Alejandro Guiterrez Escobedo AKA El Fabiruchis. Alejandro Guiterrez was the putative replacement for another Los Zetas boss, Geraldo Guerra Valdez AKA El Guerra, who was killed in Nuevo Laredo March 6th along with 12 other armed suspects in a gun battle with a Mexican Army patrol.
Bring head of Los Zetas appears as dangerous as being a Number Three among the jihadis.
Another gunfight between armed suspects and security forces in Nuevo Laredo took place last Saturday, according to Twitter postings and one Mexican press account, but those encounters have so far been unconfirmed.

A total of 20 armed suspects have been killed by Mexican Army troops in and around Nuevo Laredo since March 6th.

Wade predicts doom if he loses election
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Apparently uncertain of victory in the second round, President Abdoulaye Wade has said civil servants will begin to go without salaries only two months after his departure.

The president's statement has thrown a cold chill in the spines of many in Senegal
... a nation of about 14 million on the west coast of Africa bordering Mauretania to the north, Mali to the east, and a pair of Guineas to the south, one of them Bissau. It is 90 percent Mohammedan and has more than 80 political parties. Its primary purpose seems to be absorbing refugees...
where unlike many other countries in the sub region, civil servants have never experienced salary arrears for even a week since independence in 1960.

Almost instantly, the man billed to become the next leader, Mr Macky Sall described the statement as "a sad and outdated electoral scam intended to dissuade good-intentioned citizens."

Media reports today quoted the Senegalese leader as saying that "many investors who had good intentions about our country are pulling back due to the campaign that has been mounted against me.''

He added: "Even the admirable infrastructural projects that I have begun and currently executing can only be done by me and no one else."

President Wade made the statement apparently in response to his challenger's assertion that ''I am the man behind all those beautiful infrastructure you can see across the country.''

Mr Sall, a former Wade premier who is contesting the second round against his former boss, says he persuaded President Wade to remove the long awaited infrastructural plans from the shelves and implement them when he served as Premier from 2004 to 2008 and could do better if he won the election set for March 25.

Analysts told the Nation that the outgoing president's statements concerning the financial difficulties the country was facing were directly in response to media reports on Tuesday which allege that the ruling party campaign budget has been exhausted.

Following that report, President Wade on Tuesday night admitted that "Senegal is presently going through a serious financial crisis" but added that his re-election will help overcome those apprehensions.

For nearly a week now, the opposition coalition has been accusing President Wade of buying votes from the electorate as it did in many opposition strongholds during the first round and hence the exhaustion of the ruling party campaign budget.

Some voters confessed on independent media this week that they had received money in return for ballots during the first round.

Some insisted that they would accept any monies paid to them in exchange of ballots while many others explained that they have been fully educated on the ills it entails and will refuse further bribes.

Saleh tasks nephew to create political party
[Yemen Post] The former President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...
has tasked his nephew, Yahya Mohammad Abdullah Saleh, to set up a political party after the new President Abdu-Rabu Mansour Hadi managed to draw most leaders of the General People Congress party to his side, political sources said.

The sources told the local Al-Ahali newspaper that Saleh directed Yahya, Commander of the Central Security, to communicate with people and local organizations with the aim of having their support to the party.

They affirmed that most leaders of the GPC aligned with Hadi, pointing out that Hadi will succeed Salah as a head of the party.

"some Yemeni politicians put pressures on Hadi to preside the GPC or resign from" the sources added, hinting that Saleh had asked Hadi to attend a meeting of the GPC and Haid refused.

Separately, media sources affirmed that all the ministers of the interim government who are still loyal to Saleh withdrew from a cabinet session on Tuesday in protest at remarks of Prime Minister Mohmmad Salem Basindiwa in which he attacked Saleh.

The withdrawal of the ministers came simultaneously with a media campaign launched against Basindiwa after he accused Saleh of killing and wounding hundreds of protesters in Sana'a on March 18. Opponents of Saleh said that the withdrawal of the ministers was an attempt of Saleh to impede the government.

For its part, the Joint Meeting Parties alliance that presided the consensus government condemned "the insults" against Basindowa, asking the reasonable people of the GPC to put an end to such campaign.

Guinea-Bissau probes assassination of ex-intelligence boss
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Guinea-Bissau said Tuesday it has launched a probe into the liquidation of the former chief of military intelligence which has overshadowed the troubled nation's presidential poll.

"The enquiry into the death of Colonel Samba Diallo began yesterday (Monday)," said attorney general Edmundo Mendes, adding that the investigation was being supported by the judicial police.

Sunday's election was being seen as a test of the west African country's commitment to stability -- with army reform seen as vital to normalising a dysfunctional state sorely in need of development.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
just hours after a peaceful day of voting ended, Diallo was rubbed out by men in military dress as he sat on the terrace of a restaurant near his home.

No clear motive has emerged for the killing of Diallo, who was accused of involvement in a 2009 bombing that killed the then army chief and prompted the murder of president Joao Bernardo Vieira in a Dire Revenge™ attack a few hours later.

Diallo was director of military intelligence until April 2010, when he was tossed in the clink with other top officers on suspicion of involvement in the 2009 attack.

Diallo was due to be buried later Tuesday, according to a source close to the family.

Votes are still being tallied from the election with provisional results expected this weekend.

Bomb Found Near al-Lino's House in Ain el-Hilweh
[An Nahar] A bomb was found near the home of Paleostinian Armed Struggle chief Mahmoud Issa, who goes by the nom de guerre of al-Lino, at the terrorist settlement refugee camp of Ein el-Hellhole, the National News Agency reported Wednesday.

NNA said that TNT explosives attached to three grenades were found at 6:30 am inside a bucket of paint near the house of al-Lino, whose group is dominated by Fatah.

MTV said the bomb was estimated to contain 30 kilograms of TNT.

Members of the Paleostinian Armed Struggle immediately cordoned off the area and an explosives expert defused the bomb that was also attached to tapes, detonators and two mobile phones, NNA said.

The news agency added that one of the phones had a message on its screen but its details were not immediately available.

The PAS launched an investigation into the incident.

In a presser he held at the camp, al-Lino hinted that the planned kaboom was linked to ongoing efforts by Paleostinian factions to hand over the head of a Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
network to the Lebanese army.

Earlier this month, authorities tossed in the clink a ring led by the leader of Abdullah Azzam Brigades, Abu Mohammed Toufiq Taha, for planning attacks on the Lebanese army. But the man is reportedly on the run in Ein el-Hellhole.

Later Wednesday, one of al-Lino's bodyguards identified as Abd Suleiman al-Mutlaq was injured in his thigh after an argument with the residents of the area where the bomb was found turned into a shootout.

Al-Lino's bodyguard Amer Fustoq was killed inside the camp in December 2011.

Well, that's a shame. I guess one fringe benefit of building so many bombs is that you have a lot of people who know how to unbuild them.

China-Japan-Koreas
More on Pudgy's Purge of Military
A bloody purge in North Korea following the sudden death of leader Kim Jong-il late last year saw barbaric methods including mortar rounds used to execute high-ranking military officials, a South Korean government source said Wednesday.

"After Kim Jong-un became North Korean leader following the mourning period for his father in late December, high-ranking military officers started disappearing," the source said. The source added Fat Boy Kim Jong-un ordered loyal officials to "get rid of" anyone caught misbehaving during the mourning period for Kim Jong-il.

But contrary to reports that an assistant chief of the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces was put in front of a firing squad for being drunk during the mourning period, he was executed using a mortar round in line with Kim's orders to leave "no trace of him behind, down to his hair."

Besides the assistant chief and an assistant chief of the General Staff Department, frontline commanders were also executed, the source said.

Kim Jong-il also purged dissenters after the death of his father Kim Il-sung in 1994. Even those caught for minor infractions were executed by firing squad.

But Kim Jong-un's methods appear even more brutal. A source familiar with North Korea said, "It appears that the loyalty pledged by the military did not satisfy the young leader, who is sensitive about his weight age." Kim junior is 28 or 29.

The source said the drastic measures may have been proposed by Kim's confidant Kim Jong-gak (62), the first deputy director of the General Political Bureau of the North Korean People's Army.

#1  It seems to me that anybody could kill anybody and say it was a justified execution. I suppose if disruption is the goal, then this is a "good" way to accomplish that goal. By the way, didn't Junior f@rt during the mourning period? Anyone insecure with their position, which is just about everyone, isn't going to like this.

Israeli Violation Of Lebanon Sovereignty Unacceptable: Russia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Israel's regular violations of Lebanese airspace are unacceptable and infringe the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

"We consider violating this resolution unacceptable, especially as far as respect for Leb's illusory sovereignty and airspace is concerned. Regrettably, this is a regular violation by the Israeli air force," Lavrov said during a joint news conference with his Lebanese counterpart Adnan Mansour in Moscow on Tuesday.

Mansour told Russian Foreign Minister that Israeli military has violated Lebanese airspace more over 9,000 times since 2006.

Israel violates Leb's airspace on an almost daily basis, claiming the flights serve surveillance purposes.

Leb's government, the Hezbullies resistance movement, and the UN Interim Force in Leb, known as UNIFIL, have repeatedly condemned the airspace violations.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brokered a ceasefire in the war of aggression Israel launched against Leb in 2006, calls on Tel Aviv to respect Beirut's illusory sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In 2009, Leb filed a complaint with the United Nations, presenting over 7,000 documents pertaining to Israeli violations of Lebanese territory.

Norks Threaten Seoul Nuclear Summit
North Korea has threatened dire consequences if world leaders at the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul next week issue any statement on Pyongyang's nuclear program. The official KCNA news agency on Wednesday said it would be "a heinous insult" if the summit issues a "so-called statement" on North Korea.

"Any such kind of provocation would constitute a declaration of war against us," it added.

North Korean state radio was even more belligerent, saying, "If anybody protects and takes sides even a little with the South Korean puppet clique which is bent on seeking confrontation" with the North, they would find themselves in range of “indiscriminate gunfire aimed at pulverizing the traitors."

KCNA said Lee Myung-bak government is trying to "turn the international event into a site of confrontation with [the North], taking advantage of its status as the host. To repeat, the so-called 'North Korean nuclear issue' does not exist. There is no justification to put it on the table." State radio said, "It is insulting and shameful for countries that value justice and peace to participate in the Seoul summit."

North Korea's state media have carried articles and commentaries denouncing the nuclear summit almost every day since the beginning of the month, but this was the first time they have threatened participating countries with war.

A South Korean government official said. "The North was disappointed that China and Russia are taking part, so it seems the media are trying to increase the blackmail." But he added Seoul "is not going to respond to every statement from them."
