Terror Networks
Hackers Halt Plant Operations In Watershed Cyber Attack
Hackers likely working for a nation-state recently invaded the safety system of a critical infrastructure facility in a watershed attack that halted plant operations, according to cyber investigators and the firm whose software was targeted.

Schneider confirmed that the incident had occurred and that it had issued a security alert to users of Triconex, which cyber experts said is widely used in the energy industry, including at nuclear facilities, and oil and gas plants.

FireEye and Schneider declined to identify the victim, industry or location of the attack. Cyber-security company Dragos said the hackers targeted an organization in the Middle East, while a second firm, CyberX, said it believe the victim was in Saudi Arabia.

It marks the first report of a safety system breach at an industrial plant by hackers, who have in recent years placed increasing attention on breaking into utilities, factories and other types of critical infrastructure, cyber experts said.

Compromising a safety system could let hackers shut them down in advance of attacking other parts of an industrial plant, potentially preventing operators from identifying and halting destructive attacks, they said.

Safety systems "could be fooled to indicate that everything is okay," even as hackers damage a plant, said Galina Antova, co-founder of cyber-security firm Claroty.

"This is a watershed," said Sergio Caltagirone, head of threat intelligence with Dragos. "Others will eventually catch up and try to copy this kind of attack."

In the incident, hackers used sophisticated malware to take remote control of a workstation running a Schneider Electric Triconex safety shutdown system, then sought to reprogram controllers used to identify safety issues. Some controllers entered a fail safe mode, which caused related processes to shut down and caused the plant to identify the attack, FireEye said.

FireEye believes the attacker’s actions inadvertently caused the shutdown while probing the system to learn how it worked, said Dan Scali, who led FireEye’s investigation.

The attackers were likely conducting reconnaissance to learn how they could modify safety systems so they would not operate in the event that the hackers intended to launch an attack that disrupted or damaged the plant, he said.

PUBLIC WARNINGS
The U.S. government and private cyber-security firms have issued public warnings over the past few years about attempts by hackers from nations including Iran, North Korea and Russia and others to attack companies that run critical infrastructure plants in what they say are primarily reconnaissance operations.

CyberX Vice President Phil Neray said his firm found evidence that the malware was deployed in Saudi Arabia, which could suggest that Iran may be behind the attack.

Security researchers widely believe that Iran was responsible for a series of attacks on Saudi Arabian networks in 2012 and 2017 using a virus known as Shamoon.

Schneider provided Reuters with a customer security alert, dated Wednesday, which said it was working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to investigate the attack.

"While evidence suggests this was an isolated incident and not due to a vulnerability in the Triconex system or its program code, we continue to investigate whether there are additional attack vectors," the alert said.

Department of Homeland Security spokesman Scott McConnell said the agency was looking into the matter "to assess the potential impact on critical infrastructure."

The malware, which FireEye has dubbed Triton, is only the third type of computer virus discovered to date that is capable of disrupting industrial processes.

The first, Stuxnet, was discovered in 2010 and is widely believed by security researchers to have been used by the United States and Israel to attack Iran’s nuclear program.

The second, known as Crash Override or Industroyer, was discovered last year by researchers who said it was likely used in a December 2016 attack that cut power in Ukraine.

Iraq
For captured ISIS fighters in Iraq, justice is swift and conviction certain
MOSUL, IRAQ ‐ "Haya-al-Adel," 20-year-old Hamza Ali Salim declared, an Arabic phrase for "Long live justice," after he was handed a sentence of only 15 years in prison.

Salim was accused of illegally training with the Islamic State, preaching falsely at a mosque and persuading people to fight against the Iraqi army.

Now that the Iraqi government has declared the end of ISIS in Iraq following the recapture of western Anbar province, along the Syrian border, trials for ISIS militants and suspected members have begun.

Iraqi authorities have arrested hundreds of suspected ISIS fighters, including foreigners from Turkey, Russia, the United States, Germany and France. They have been transferred to Baghdad for security reasons. But many of the Iraqi suspects are being tried just outside Mosul.

Yahoo News was granted rare media access to some of the trials at the Mosul courthouse.

The courtroom was a small room with a high bench where three judges sat between two Iraqi flags. In the middle was the head of the court, Judge Jamal. Adjacent to the bench was a female prosecuting attorney, and below was a desk where secretaries recorded the trials.

Salim was the first suspect brought into the room. He was covered in dust, his athletic pants torn and tattered. He stood facing the judges while a public defender sat behind him and took notes.

Judge Jamal asked him, "What is your relationship to ISIS?"

Salim responded, "Nothing. I was just going to the mosque to study. The Quran is not forbidden."
Now would be a good time to be judicious with your sarcasm, Salim ....
The judge reminded him that he admitted to serving on ISIS military bases in his confession. Salim denied the accusation and said he was tortured into his admission.

Reading from notes, the public defender argued that Salim was pressured to cooperate with ISIS while the militants occupied Mosul. In U.S. jurisprudence, that’s called " arguing in the alternative " ‐ presenting two or more defenses that may be mutually contradictory, in the hope the court will accept at least one of them ‐ but that concept doesn’t exist in the Iraqi court. Because Salim’s testimony in court contradicted his confession, the public defender said the judges should not separate Salim’s two accounts; they had to either accept or reject the confession as a whole.

When Yahoo News spoke to the chief justice of Mosul, Salem Mohammed, he said that when a suspect is arrested "and there is enough evidence, then he goes to court." Evidence can include a confession or testimony from witnesses or "if, when [Iraqi forces] arrest him, he has a gun."

He said that when a suspect is brought to court, he is often presumed guilty. The trials witnessed by Yahoo News lasted around 20 minutes each on average.
Sounds about right.
Human Rights Watch representative Belkis Wille told Yahoo News during an interview in Erbil that less than 5 percent of the cases are dismissed, "and they claim it’s because the information they have is so good, but I don’t think that’s all that’s going on."
Belkis Wille. Doesn't sound like a local name. I would ignore him in favor of a local HRW representative's opinion. In fact, I wouldn't even listen to him.
She explained, "Unfortunately this justice system revolves around confessions. In Iraq, generally, when there is a crime, they hold the guy and beat him until he says he did it and that is the evidence."

Wille added the Iraqi justice system is "perpetrator-centric rather than victim-centric," and victims are not given the chance to participate in the process or given the opportunity to attend hearings.

"I don’t necessarily think they care that much if they get it right or not," Wille added. "A lot of this is a symbolic statement for the government to show [it’s] tough on ISIS."
I'm sure they care.
Judges can't pi$$ off too many and expect to live to see the next day.

Mohammed said that isn’t true, and that during the initial investigation process, witnesses are brought to the court. They have to swear on a Quran or a Bible, depending on their religion, to tell the truth.

Back at the courthouse, however, there were no civilians sitting in on the trials.

The second suspect, 29-year-old Mohanad Moshin, was brought into the courtroom. He was short in stature, and had on a dusty athletic jacket and wore sandals to cover his feet. His beard was unkempt and he shuffled nervously.

Judge Jamal asked Moshin his nickname, possibly as a trick question: ISIS was known to give its fighters new identities. But Moshin gave his family name instead. He was then escorted out of the room while a public defender was sought.

Defense attorneys and public defenders have been scarce during the trials because no one wants to be accused of siding with ISIS. Last August, Iraqi authorities swept through Mosul arresting several defense lawyers claiming they were members of ISIS. Defending the group could result in a lawyer’s death or threats to his family. But according to Iraqi law, there still needs to be someone present for trials to proceed ‐ seemingly more as a courtesy rather than an actual defense.

When Moshin’s trial began, the judges questioned him about his involvement. He had turned himself in to Iraqi authorities and confessed: "I worked as a guard [for ISIS] and moved around as an associate to them. I also prepared food for the militants."

When Judge Jamal read out Moshin’s full charges and accusations, he asked, "Do you have anything to say?"

"Find the right judgment," Moshin answered. He was sentenced to 15 years because he had been honest. Moshin smiled as he walked out of the courtroom. He was going to live.
There are many ways to die, or not die. I say reserve the better ones for those who fess up.
Following his sentencing, Moshin helped carry in the third suspect, Ibrahim Najm, 24, to the courtroom. Najm was unable to walk and, rumor had it among the courtroom guards, he had been injured while fighting against Iraqi forces. He would later tell the court he was arrested after fleeing with his wife.

Najm’s body shook in fear while he bowed his head low. His brown T-shirt was tattered, held together by what looked like pieces of white plastic. His long eyelashes hung over his round, beady eyes. His shaven head was covered in dandruff. Unlike the two previous suspects, he had no sandals on his feet, and appeared gaunt and frail under his loose clothing.

Judge Jamal looked at him and called the prison representative into the courtroom. He berated him for Najm’s condition and told him to tell his bosses they needed to "treat the suspects better," and that it was "very disrespectful" to bring him to court like that. He told the representative they should be "treated according to law and human rights."

When the representative left the room, the judge reviewed Najm’s charges.

Najm was accused of fighting for ISIS and possessing a weapon. Najm denied training or fighting with them.

"Why did you support them?" the judge asked anyway.

He snuffled before responding, "My father was a militant; he told me to go with Daesh," using the Arabic acronym for ISIS. He explained that his father and brothers were fighters and had been killed during the fight for Mosul.

The judge, "Did [ISIS] give you an AK[-47] or a pistol?"

Najm responded, "An AK-47 and three magazines." He added he needed a salary to survive, and ISIS offered him about $150 a month .

Despite the harsh accusations made against Najm, Judge Jamal took pity on him and gave him only 15 years as well, saying, "We don’t count your father and brothers’ crimes against you," but he also warned that Baghdad would get the final say in his sentencing.

No one was sentenced to execution during this round, but the judge reminded suspects of the severity of their crimes and that according to Iraqi law, they deserved to die. He was, under the circumstances, being lenient, even compassionate.
Gotta treat them in ways that the locals will understand. And they have to get rid of the cancer before it starts to grow again, which necessitates some mistakes. They'll get that, too. Better than HRW's option which would take forever in a poor country and just expose "good" prisoners to ISIS poisonous ideas in jail. We all know how well that works out.
*****

But the fate of foreign suspects is expected to be different. Belkis Wille said the Iraqi attitude toward foreigners is they "came to do damage to [this] country, and are most deserving of the death penalty."

Chief Justice Mohammed agreed, saying they "came to kill citizens of this country and should be judged according to the laws of this country."

On the streets of Mosul, citizens also agreed. Yahoo News spoke to one man who owns a blanket shop. Rafed, 47, said, "They have to be executed. They destroyed [this city]. How could I not judge them like this?"

His cousin, jewelry shop owner Jadan, agreed: "Just the way [ISIS] executed people, they should also be executed."

Rafed, however, also believes that if the Iraqi forces and the government don’t treat the citizens of Mosul fairly, the situation will happen again.

Two young men running a furniture store thought anyone associated with ISIS should be executed, along with their families. Twenty-eight-year-old Ahmed said, "If you plant poison, what do you get? Poison." During the ISIS occupation, he said, "I stopped going to the mosque to pray because they asked me to work for them a lot. Foreign, Iraqi, wherever they’re from, they should be executed."

Ahmed’s friend, called by the same name, drew a distinction between Iraqis recruited by ISIS and the fighters who came from abroad. "There was no forgiveness with the foreigners. Sometimes the Iraqis would let you go, but the foreigners did whatever they wanted."

*****

Despite European Union countries’ objection to the death penalty, French diplomats have said adult suspects should be tried in Iraq and they would make efforts only on a case-by-case basis to repatriate children. Germany has reached out to Iraq concerning a 16-year-old ISIS wife, who was found last summer and paraded by Iraqi officials as a guilty party. She is now in a juvenile facility and awaits the next step. But the U.S. has largely been silent.
Good. Deciding to do nothing at all is a decision I understand here. I don't want them near me or mine. Or yours.
According to Wille of Human Rights Watch, "The problem with the U.S. and the U.K, in particular, is because of their history in Iraq," referring to the 2003 invasion. "They’re staying far away."

She also noted there isn’t an appetite in the foreigners’ home countries to have "these people brought home and stand fair trials. They’re going to stay here," she said, "[and] be convicted under counterterrorism laws and likely executed."

It’s a convenient solution for Western countries that don’t want take on more responsibility ‐ apart from military support. Maintaining friendly relations with Iraq is paramount in continuing their own campaigns against terrorism.

But while Iraq celebrates victory over ISIS without any program to include victims in the trial or rebuilding process, the atmosphere is ripe for resentment among citizens ‐ and another uprising of frustrated militants could be on the horizon.
Maybe, but I doubt it. More likely an uprising against the local officials. So until I hear stories about the general public being upset,
I think HRW should keep its pie hole closed.

Economy
Fed Raises Rates, Sticks to Forecast for 2018 Increases
[WSJ] WASHINGTON‐The Federal Reserve showed continued optimism about the U.S. economy in voting Wednesday to raise short-term interest rates for the third time this year, and signaling it would stay on a similar path next year amid a leadership transition.

Officials nudged their economic-growth estimates higher for the next few years on expectations that congressional Republicans will pass tax cuts. But the Fed policy makers’ new projections suggest the boost wouldn’t be so large that they would have to speed up the pace of rate increases to guard against too much inflation.

"At the moment the U.S. economy is performing well," Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen said at a press conference after the central bank’s two-day policy meeting ended Wednesday.

"The growth that we’re seeing, it’s not based on, for example, an unsustainable buildup of debt," she added. "The global economy is doing well. We’re in a synchronized expansion. This is the first time in many years we’ve seen this."

The Fed said it would increase its benchmark federal-funds rate Thursday by a quarter percentage point to a range between 1.25% and 1.5%, the fifth such increase in the past two years. Officials penciled in three quarter-point rate increases for next year, as they had in September, and two such increases each in 2019 and 2020.

Doug Jones victory speech thanks 95 percent crowd with MLK quote
BLUF:
[Breitbart] Jones made no mention of Alabama’s white majority, whom exit polls showed voted against him by more than two to one. The same polls showed more than 95% of black Alabamians voters chose Jones.

Jones also downplayed the importance of his opponent, Roy Moore, to the race. "It’s never been about me. It’s never been about Roy Moore. It’s been about every one of you and your sons and daughters," he told supporters, thanking his own staff and volunteers.

Moore had been the central focus in most coverage of the campaign since a major scandal over his fitness began with a Washington Post piece featuring a woman claiming Moore touched her sexually when she was 14-years-old.

Jones only briefly spoke about policy, urging his soon to be U.S. Senate colleagues to reauthorize funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) before he takes his seat. Some Democrats in Congress have demanded amnesty before this can occur.

Closing with an oft-cited Martin Luther King Jr. quote about the moral arch of the universe bending towards justice, Jones told the crowd, "You helped bend that moral arc a little closer to that justice ... you sent it right through the heart of the great state of Alabama."

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Deputy AG Won't Say Whether The FBI Paid For Dossier
[Daily Caller] Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein refused to say on Wednesday whether the FBI paid for the infamous Trump dossier.

Rosenstein, who was grilled by the House Judiciary Committee, suggested that he knew the answer to the question, which was posed by Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis.

"Did the FBI pay for the dossier?" DeSantis asked.

"I’m not in a position to answer that question," Rosenstein responded.

"Do you know the answer to the question?" the Republican DeSantis followed up.

"I believe I know the answer, but the Intelligence Committee is the appropriate committee..." Rosenstein began.

DeSantis interjected to assert that the Judiciary panel has "every right to the information" about payments for the dossier.

Congressional Republicans have long questioned the Justice Department and FBI over whether payments were made for the Trump dossier, which was written by former British spy Christopher Steele and funded by the Clinton campaign and DNC.

PBS sez 'so long' to Travis Smiley
[AXIOS] The late-night show "Tavis Smiley" was suspended by PBS after an investigation of Smiley that resulted in "multiple, credible allegations of conduct that is inconsistent with the values and standards of PBS," Variety reports.

Per Variety, the investigation revealed sexual relationships with subordinates, and a "verbally abusive and threatening environment" created by Smiley.

Why it matters: Another powerful man has been taken down by allegations of sexual misconduct, joining dozens of other men.

Africa Subsaharan
ISIS Being Funded by Slavery? Ties to Shocking Trade Suspected
[PJ] WASHINGTON -- Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan told Congress last week that he believes there is a tie between terror groups' financing and the slave trade that's popped up in parts of Libya in which smugglers end up selling African migrants trying to make it to Europe.

"The reports of what's happening in those camps where migrants, refugees are being abused, exploited and slave trade -- shocking," Sullivan told the House Foreign Affairs Committee during a hearing on counterterrorism efforts in Africa. "It's happening in areas of Libya that are largely ungoverned, which is why we need -- we're working hard, along with the UN, for a political solution to the situation to get more control over those areas."

"But in those ungoverned areas where ISIS and other terrorist organizations are able to operate, they make money by engaging in activities like that," he added.

Pressed on which terrorist groups are involved in the slave trade, Sullivan replied, "I would have to get back to you for a specific answer. I can speculate." He said difficulty in being able to access areas where the camps are located "presents a real problem for us in trying to directly address the problem."

A CNN investigation released last month revealed slave markets in which human beings were being auctioned for a few hundred bucks. "If you look at most of the people here, if you check your bodies, you see the marks. They are beaten, mutilated," said a Nigerian migrant who was sold several times by smugglers. The Libyan government has said it's investigating, while putting some blame on the migrants' countries of origin and their destination countries in Europe.

The FBI's Trump ‘Insurance' More troubling evidence of election meddling at the bureau
[WSJ] Democrats and the media are accusing anyone who criticizes special counsel Robert Mueller as Trumpian conspirators trying to undermine his probe. But who needs critics when Mr. Mueller’s team is doing so much to undermine its own credibility?

Wednesday’s revelations‐they’re coming almost daily‐include the Justice Department’s release of 2016 text messages to and from Peter Strzok, the FBI counterintelligence agent whom Mr. Mueller demoted this summer. The texts, which he exchanged with senior FBI lawyer Lisa Page, contain expletive-laced tirades against Mr. Trump. Such Trump hatred is no surprise and not by itself disqualifying. More troubling are texts that suggest that some FBI officials may have gone beyond antipathy to anti-Trump plotting.

"I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office‐that there’s no way [Trump] gets elected‐but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk," Mr. Strzok wrote Ms. Page in an Aug. 15, 2016 text. He added: "It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40."

What "policy" would that be? The "Andy" in question is Andrew McCabe, the deputy FBI director. FBI officials are allowed to have political opinions, but what kind of action were they discussing that would amount to anti-Trump "insurance"?

In another exchange that month, Ms. Page forwarded a Trump-related article and wrote: "Maybe you’re meant to stay where you are because you’re meant to protect the country from that menace." He thanked her and assured: "Of course I’ll try and approach it that way." Mr. Strzok, recall, is the man who changed the words "grossly negligent" to "extremely careless" in James Comey’s July 2016 public exoneration of Hillary Clinton’s emails.

The McCabe meeting came on the heels of the FBI’s launch of its counterintelligence probe into Trump-Russia ties. July is also when former British spook Christopher Steele briefed the FBI on his Clinton-financed dossier of salacious allegations against Mr. Trump. The texts explain why Mr. Mueller would remove Mr. Strzok, though a straight shooter wouldn’t typically resist turning those messages over to Congress for as long as Mr. Mueller did.

Meanwhile, we’re learning more about the political motives of Mr. Mueller’s lieutenant, Andrew Weissmann. Judicial Watch last week released an email in which Mr. Weissmann expressed his "awe" and praise for Sally Yates, after the then acting AG and Obama holdover refused to implement Mr. Trump’s travel ban.

This should trouble anyone who cares about the integrity of the Justice Department. Ms. Yates had every right to resign at the time if she felt she couldn’t implement Mr. Trump’s order. But she had no authority as an executive branch official to defy a legitimate presidential order. Mr. Weissmann’s support for her insubordination was a declaration that he is part of the "resistance." This should be unacceptable in a ranking FBI official, much less someone charged with conducting a fair-minded investigation.

Eric Trump: Gillibrand visited Trump's office 'every three days, asking for money'
[The Hill] President Trump's son Eric Trump on Wednesday dismissed calls by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) for his father to step down from office in the face of sexual misconduct allegations, waving her off as a "distraction" from policy priorities.

"I remember Kirsten Gillibrand when she came into his office every three days to ask him for money and ask for major campaign contributions," Eric Trump told WABC radio's Rita Cosby. "There is no one who wanted to get into his office more than Kirsten Gillibrand."

"It’s amazing how convenient it is that he’s doing incredibly well there ‐ a minute away from finalizing, maybe the most historic tax cut to our nation and here she is," he added. "She follows the whole Schumer playbook. Again, it’s a shame, but it’s a distraction. I think we’ve gotten pretty good at tuning out distractions."

The younger Trump's comments came after the president lashed out at Gillibrand on Twitter Tuesday, calling her a "lightweight" and a "total flunky," who would "do anything for" him to donate to her campaign.

Kentucky state lawmaker abruptly ends sexual misconduct investigation
[The Hill] A Kentucky state representative accused of molesting a teenage girl has killed himself, according to WDRB.com in Louisville.

Rep. Dan Johnson, a Republican, reportedly shot and killed himself on a bridge in Mt. Washington, Ky. The gun was recovered by police, according to WDRB.

The Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting published an expose on Monday detailing allegations that Johnson forced himself on a 17-year-old friend of his daughter after a New Year's Eve Party in 2012.

Johnson denied the allegations on Tuesday, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. He said the accuser was a member of his church, and that the claims were, in part, politically motivated.

"This is an assault on all real people, there's no perfect people and you get into office and all of sudden political hacks come against you and start accusing you after you're in office," he said, according to the Courier-Journal.

Johnson also acknowledged that he messaged the woman on Facebook in January 2013, saying that he did not remember what happened the night of the alleged encounter and that he had been "drugged" at a local bar.

He said later on that he did remember what happened that night, and denied ever entering the room where the girls were sleeping.

Former 'Apprentice' contestant Omarosa escorted from White House
WASHINGTON (AP) ‐ True to form, former "Apprentice" star Omarosa is ending her time at the White House with a dose of drama.

Omarosa Manigault Newman, one of President Donald Trump's most prominent African-American supporters, was escorted off the White House grounds after resigning her post as a presidential adviser, according to two White House officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday that Manigault Newman's resignation is effective Jan. 20, one year after Trump's inauguration. "We wish her the best in future endeavors and are grateful for her service," Sanders said.

More on this one at 11:00.

Related: The Hill - Trump administration aide Omarosa Manigault Newman reportedly set off White House alarms in an attempt to gain access to the residence after learning that she had been fired from her job.

#2  April Ryan link inop.

Try this: Media lies BUSTED! The truth behind Omarosa’s “firing” (it’s fake news!)

"Tuesday was Manigault-Newman’s last official day, but Jan. 20 will be her official exit date.

In an interview with ABC News on Thursday morning, Manigault-Newman repeatedly denied any allegations of confronting Kelly at a White House Christmas Party, nor did she break into the White House residence to ask Trump about her dismissal. It’s all “fake news.”

She also confirmed that only part of her pass into the White House was deactivated, she still has access to parts of the White House.

The truth behind all these fake new reports is that Manigault-Newman unsuccessfully negotiated a new contract.

There are likely to be more White House officials resignations to come in the new year. It’s a normal part of business in the executive branch — contracts are reviewed, negotiated, and some people choose to pursue new opportunities in their careers."

German Court Clears Suspect in 'Suicide Bomb Plot'
[AnNahar] A German court said Wednesday it is releasing one of three suspected jihadists jugged
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
for allegedly planning coordinated suicide kabooms in the western German city of Duesseldorf.

No proof has been found that Jordanian national Mahmood B.
...identified in previous articles as Mahood B., so somebody has got it wrong...
was participating in the alleged plot, the Duesseldorf court said.

Two other men, Syrian national Saleh A. and Algerian citizen Hamza C., are still under investigation for allegedly having planned an attack in Duesseldorf's old town center on the orders of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

The case came to light when Saleh A. went to a cop shoppe in Gay Paree in February last year and told officers that he had "a certain amount of information about a sleeper cell that was ready to strike in Germany."

He had been registered as an asylum seeker in the Duesseldorf region in 2013 and Germany requested extradition from La Belle France after he turned himself in.

German authorities believe Saleh A. and Hamza C. joined IS in early 2014 in Syria.

They crossed from Syria to The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
in May 2014. From there they traveled separately in March and July in 2015 via Greece to Germany.

Prosecutors said the pair planned to finance the attack by selling a video to the Vatican with proof of life of a priest kidnapped by IS in Syria.

They were also believed to have convinced Mahmood B. to join in the plot. But the court said no evidence suggesting the Jordanian's involvement has been found.

Turkish MP linked to boxing gang in Germany
[DW] An investigative report links Ankara to a boxing gang in Germany accused of going after opponents of the Ottoman Turkish government. The report ties a Ottoman Turkish MP close to President Erdogan to violent criminal activity.
We’ve got phone taps, fat envelopes full of money changing hands, gun trafficking, “spontaneous” brawls... all because it is a crime for Sultan Recep Tayip Erdogan I, the much beloved, to be contradicted by anyone anywhere. A taste:
A Ottoman Turkish parliamentarian has provided money to a boxing gang in Germany to buy weapons, organize protests and go after critics of President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey...

, German media reported on Wednesday.

Metin Kulunk, a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and close confidant of Erdogan, directly and indirectly provided money to the Ottoman Turkish nationalist Osmanen Germania, according to an investigation by ZDF-Magazin Frontal 21 and the Stuttgarter Nachrichten.

The investigation was based on German police phone taps and surveillance of the group leaked to the news organizations.

It suggests a relationship between Osmanen Germania and Kulunk, as well as the Ottoman Turkish intelligence agency MIT, the AKP's European lobby and Erdogan himself.

Osmanen Germania describes itself as a boxing club and "brotherhood," but authorities have long suspected it of being involved in criminal activity and violence. It is estimated to have 20 chapters and 2,500 members in Germany.

One of Kulunk's main contacts was Mehmet Bagci, the former head of Osmanen Germania who has been in pretrial detention in Germany since 2016. Another key figure was the group's vice president, Selcuk Sahin, who is also detained.

According to police investigations, Osmanen Germania was instructed by Kulunk to go after Kurds and critics of Erdogan living in Germany. He also allegedly organized protests against last year's Armenian genocide resolution passed by the German parliament.

Diyala desperados: ISIS hideouts arc-lighted while sniper snipes villagers

Two ISIS hideouts arc-lighted

Diyala (Iraqinews.com) Iraqi warplanes destroyed on Wednesday two Islamic State hideouts and 24 barrels of weapons in Diyala, a military commander said.

“Acting upon accurate intelligence information, the Iraqi Air Force launched a series of airstrikes on Islamic State hideouts in the depth of Hamrin town in Diyala, destroying two IS hotbeds and two other armored vehicles,” Commander of the Tigris Operations Lieutenant General Mezher al-Azzawi told IKH News on Wednesday.

“The troops also killed all IS militants who were hiding inside the armored vehicles and destroyed two motorbikes and 25 barrels filled with weapons and ammunition,” Azzawi added.

Official: life paralyzed at Diyala village as Islamic State snipers shoot on

Diyala (IraqiNews.com) Civilians at a village in Diyala province are still threatened by Islamic State sniper for a second week as Iraq declared final victory over the militant group, according to a local official.

Udai al-Khadran, mayor of al-Khales (15 km north of Baqubah) told Alsumaria News that “Islamic State snipers, scattered above the hills of Mubarak al-Farhan village, on the borders between Diyala and Salahuddin, paralyze civilians’ movement and prevent them from reaching their farmlands”.

Mubarak al-Farhan is one of the villages recaptured by Iraqi security during the campaign to eliminate Islamic State’s self-styled “caliphate”. It falls within the administrative borders of Salahuddin province, and is located very close to the Mutaibija Basin, a longtime hotbed for Islamic State militants.

Men due to leave Gitmo under Obama seem stuck under Trump
[IsraelTimes] Five prisoners were cleared by the previous administration but release procedure wasn't completed in time; White House has not made clear its plans for Cuban detention facility.

The Trump administration has not released any prisoners and not added any to the list of cleared men who can go home, or to a third country, for resettlement. There were 197 transferred out under his predecessor and more than 500 under US President George W. Bush.

Obama sought to close the detention center but was thwarted by Congress because of objections over transferring any of the remaining detainees to facilities in the US.

The administration has not announced its policy toward the detention center. But Trump said on Twitter before he took office that there should be no further releases from "Gitmo," as it’s often called. "These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield," he said.

The possibility that former Guantanamo prisoners would resume hostile activities has long been a concern that has played into the debate over releases. The office of the Director of National Intelligence said this summer in its most recent report on the subject that about 17 percent of the 728 detainees who have been released are "confirmed" and 12% are "suspected" of re-engaging in such activities.

The 41 remaining prisoners include the five approved for transfer and 10 who have been charged by military commission. That leaves 26 in indefinite confinement who could potentially be reviewed and added to the cleared list. Several may still be prosecuted and are unlikely to be set free, but lawyers for the rest are considering filing new legal challenges, arguing that a policy of no releases would mean their confinement can no longer legally be justified as a temporary wartime measure.

US torture continues at Guantanamo Bay, warns UN expert
It’s been a while since we’ve been accused of viciousness. But there’s a Republican in the White House again, so the thing was guaranteed.
[DW] The US has continued to torture detainees held at the controversial detention center in Cuba, said the UN's expert on torture. He warned that enacting a policy of torture is among "the most serious international crimes."

Here's an idea: Tell the poor dears - and have Ambassador Haley announce it in the Security Council - that in 18 months, they will be turned loose with a ticket to anywhere in the world, and a check for $20K.

IF your co-religionists do not execute a single terror attack anywhere in the world for those 18 months, to include Israel. No ISIS, no Gaza, no Sudden-Jihadi-Syndrome, no NOTHING.
The second that they do, the clock resets.

And then watch them grow old and die in captivity.

Undercover troops infiltrate, break up violent Ramallah protest
[IsraelTimes] Police officers blend into crowd before suddenly drawing pistols, firing shots in the air and arresting several rock throwers

Undercover Israeli coppers infiltrated and broke up a violent Paleostinian protest outside Ramallah on Wednesday, the army said.

Video footage from the scene shows the Israeli operatives with their faces covered with masks, keffiyehs and, in one case, a Paleostinian flag, worn as a hood.

As hundreds of Paleostinians threw rocks at Israeli troops near the military checkpoint outside the West Bank city, the undercover soldiers suddenly burst into action, arresting a number of protesters and firing shots into the air, which sent the rest of the demonstrators running.

During [the protest] an undercover operation by the Israel Police’s Special Patrol Unit and Border Police took place, and three rioters were placed in durance vile
You have the right to remain silent...
and handed over for questioning," the army said in a tweet.

A similar violent demonstration ‐ without undercover agents ‐ took place in Bethlehem. Smaller ones also took place in Nablus and Jericho, shutting down checkpoints and roadways, Israeli officials said.

AFP news hounds on the scene in Ramallah said that one of the undercover officers ‐ known in Hebrew as mista’arvim ‐ also threw a smoke grenade.

Soldiers then rushed into the area as the undercover soldiers led the Paleostinians they detained into army vehicles.

Footage from the scene was captured by journalists who were reporting on the protest and by the Israel Defense Forces itself.

Medics on the scene said three Paleostinians were maimed during the Ramallah protest.

Riots also took place on Wednesday morning along the security fence surrounding the Gazoo Strip. Protesters rolled burning tires and threw rocks at Israeli forces and the barrier itself. During these demonstrations, soldiers called for "main instigators" to halt and fired warning shots in the air. When the protesters continued to approach the fence, the troops fired at them, hitting several, an army spokesperson said.

In southern Gazoo, outside the city of Khan Younis, a group of Paleostinian teenage protesters filmed themselves crossing the security fence into Israel before they were quickly turned back by IDF troops.

Palestinians hurl stones at Israeli cars, settlers respond in kind

[Ynet] Some 40 settlers threw stones at Paleostinian residents and their homes in Burin, near Nablus, saying it was done in response to the Paleostinians from the village first attacking them; IDF removed the settlers from the village; none hurt.

Israel foils Hamas kidnapping plot planned for Hanukkah
[IsraelTimes] Security forces arrest 3 Paleostinians suspected of intending to abduct soldier or settler in the West Bank during the 8-day holiday

Israeli security services locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
three members of an alleged Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, terrorist cell in the northern West Bank suspected of planning to kidnap an Israeli citizen during the Hanukkah festival, the Shin Bet security service announced Wednesday.

The three Paleostinian suspects were arrested in late October, following a weeks-long investigation during which the Shin Bet, Israel Defense Forces and Israel Police uncovered the kidnapping plot. Details of the case were kept secret under a gag order, which was removed on Wednesday as the findings were handed over to state prosecutors to begin preparing indictments.

The Shin Bet said the alleged ringleader of the terror cell was Mu’ad Ashtiyah, a 26-year-old Paleostinian from the village of Tell, near Nablus in the northern West Bank.

He recruited cousins Mahmoud and Ahmad Ramadan, both 19 and also of Tell, to assist him in the plot, the security service said.

According to the Shin Bet, the three men planned to "kidnap a soldier or settler from one of the bus stations at a central junction in Samaria" ‐ the biblical term for the northern West Bank.

"The plan was for them to dress up as local settlers and to get the abductee to get into their car," the security service said.

The Shin Bet said the kidnapping was planned to take place during the eight-day Hanukkah holiday, which began on Tuesday evening.

"The goal of the terror attack was to advance negotiations for the release of security prisoners in Israeli prisons," the security service said.

In preparation for the abduction, Ashtiyah purchased a pistol, pepper spray and a stun gun, the Shin Bet said.

"The cell planned to buy more weapons in order to carry out the terror attack," the security service added.

The terror plot was funded by Hamas officials in the Gazoo Strip, according to the Shin Bet.

They received direction and support from Omar Assida, a Hamas operative in the coastal enclave who was apparently released by Israel during a 2011 prisoner swap, in which over 1,000 convicted snuffies were set free in exchange for the kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

All three of the suspects are members of the Hamas terrorist group, the Shin Bet said.

Ashtiyah and the two Ramadans had begun collecting intelligence on the bus stops and roadways where they planned to carry out their abduction, the Shin Bet said.

The security service said that it had handed over the findings of its investigation to state prosecutors for them to "consider filing indictments against those involved."

On Wednesday, Houthi-controlled media on Wednesday showed photos of a meeting between Houthi political chief Saleh al-Sammad and Yahya al-Rai, assistant secretary-general of the General People's Congress (GPC) and a speaker of parliament.

The meeting in Sanaa was also attended by Hisham Sharaf, the Houthi minister of foreign affairs.

Later in the day, al-Sammad also met other members of Saleh's GPC, in a move perceived to be a Houthi attempt to restore an alliance with the party.

The Houthis, who protested against Saleh during the country's 2011 uprisings, formed a shaky alliance with the long-time leader and his party against the government of the internationally recognised President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in 2014.

This cooperation broke down completely in recent weeks as Houthi fighters and Saleh loyalists clashed.

Two days before he was killed on December 4, Saleh publicly stated his willingness to engage in talks with Soddy Arabia

SC dismayed by absence of idols in Katas Raj temples
[DAWN] The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday expressed dismay over the absence of idols in the Sri Ram and Hanuman temples in the Katas Raj temple complex in Chakwal, and sought an explanation from the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) in this regard.

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also ordered the closure of tubewells used by the Bestway Cement factory, which is believed to be one of the industrial units responsible for the drying up of the Katas Raj pond.

According to Hindu mythology, Katas Raj is the second-most sacred Hindu site and dates back to 600 AD. The temple complex is built around the pond, which finds it origin from Katak Shah, which is Sanskrit for ’raining eyes’. The pond is believed to have been formed from the tears of Shiva after the loss of his wife, Sati.

The SC bench is conducting a suo motu
...a legal term, from the Latin. Roughly translated it means I saw what you did, you bastard...
hearing based on media reports that the Katas Raj pond is drying out due to water consumption by nearby cement factories, which are sucking water through a number of drill bores that have reduced the subsoil water level and the use of subsoil water by domestic users.

The court was perturbed to learn that two adjacent temples within the premises of the Katas Raj, called Hanuman temple and Sri Ram Mandir, were without any idols, and Hindu pilgrims who visited the holy site had to bring their own idols to perform their rituals.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial was at a loss to understand why the authorities could not protect idols inside the temples.

Advocate Mohammad Ikram Chaudhry, who represents ETPB, assured the court that he would submit an updated report on Wednesday when the court will resume hearing the case.

The court was also unhappy with the state of affairs at the department, and regretted that it had become something to accommodate party loyalists instead of appointing professional individuals. The court was told that Asif Hashmi, the former chairman of the board who had allegedly indulged in the appropriation of funds, was still on the lam.

'We got the slap of our times': Palestinian president rejects US as peace broker
[DAWN] Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
told leaders of Moslem countries on Wednesday that the United States (US) is no longer fit to broker an Israeli-Paleostinian peace deal and should be replaced as mediator by the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
(UN), outlining a significant policy shift in response to President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
That’s nice, dear. But the US has veto power in the Security Council, while the General Assembly has no power at all. And the only country that can push Israel is America, so...
In an impassioned speech at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) extraordinary summit on Al Quds and Paleostine in Istanbul, Abbas said his people would no longer accept the US as a peace broker but added that they remain committed to international resolutions which have formed the basis of the process.
Just as committed as they were before, at any rate. That is to say, they are committed in English, and don’t even bother with taqiyya in Arabic.
The summit of the 57-member Organisation of Moslem Cooperation concluded with the Istanbul Declaration, outlining the bloc's response to Trump's declaration. It called the decision "null and void" and urged Trump to reconsider the move, which it said was an "unlawful decision that might trigger chaos in the region."
Those of you in the region are dealing with the results of the ISIS eruption, except for the Palestinians. How much more chaos can there be?
Abbas said Trump's decision was a "crime" which came at a time when the Paleostinians were engaged with Washington in a new push to reach what he said was anticipated to be the "deal of our times."

"Instead we got the slap of our times," Abbas said.

"The United States has chosen to lose its qualification as a mediator... We will no longer accept that it has a role in the political process from now."

The speech marked a significant shift in Abbas' approach toward the US, after years of focusing on courting US goodwill because of Washington's role as sole mediator in the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict.

Immediately after Trump's announcement last week, Abbas had said the US effectively disqualified itself as a broker, but Wednesday's speech was more sharply worded and delivered to a global audience.
Looking forward to the closing of your Washington, DC digs and the loss of about $200 million a year in donations?

Haredi, Arab parents seeking better education for children, report shows
Reality is bursting out all over.
[IsraelTimes] Minorities increasingly registering their children at schools where they learn core curriculum, to boost their prospects later in life.

A new study by Shoresh Institution indicates that Haredi parents as well as Arab Israelis may be choosing to register their children in non-Haredi religious and secular schools to ensure they study core curriculum subjects, to safeguard their children’s economic independence and ability to work in a competitive economy.

First graders in 2009 are children born in 2003, right after the massive cuts in welfare that induced many Israelis to enter the labor market for the first time in their lives, he explained. "It is quite possible that the shock of their ill-preparedness led more than a few parents to ensure that their children have a better start when they grow up."

Haredi birth rates began falling in 2003,
Golly — just as the massive welfare cuts happened.
though they still remained far above those of other religious Jews and of course higher than birth rates among secular Jews.

A similar pattern appears to have been developing among Moslem Arabs who have increasingly entered the middle class and desire a better education for their children than is currently given in Moslem schools, he added. "As a result, many have begun to register their children in Arab Christian schools ‐ which are substantially better ‐ and in Jewish schools in the mixed cities."

Even so, the report said, the populations in Israel that are growing the fastest ‐ the Haredi and the Moslems ‐ are also those that are still receiving the worst education, and roughly half of Israel’s children are receiving a Third World education.

Protesting lawyers storm new judicial complex in Multan, vandalise building
[DAWN] Enraged lawyers in Multan stormed the new judicial complex on Mattital Road, smashing windows and doors and mirrors with sticks, in protest over the shifting of the courts for a second consecutive day.

The lawyers are incensed that the new judicial complex, which began functioning on Nov 14, does not house their chambers.

The protests, which began on Tuesday, continued today as lawyers entered the sessions court after a scuffle with the police.

A large number of female lawyers also participated in the demonstrations today.

Television footage showed police trying to contain the protesting lawyers in front of the complex. At one point, however, the lawyers managed to break past the police and surround them and were seen aggressively clapping their hands above their heads.

The lawyers then broke into the complex building and began smashing windows and doors inside a sessions court with sticks.

The lawyers maintain that although four or five months had lapsed, their demands had not been fulfilled and the new judicial complex does not house their chambers.

Bangladesh
Cleric in Bangladesh arrested for issuing fatwa against women farmers
[DAWN] A Moslem holy man accused of issuing a fatwa banning women from working on farms has been incarcerated
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in Bangladesh, police said on Wednesday.

The imam and five mosque officials face charges after their announcement prompted locals in the western town of Kumarkhali to try and prevent women from going to work in the fields.

"They took the decision after prayers on Friday, banning women from going out of their homes," local police chief Abdul Khaleque told AFP.

"They used the mosque's loudspeakers that evening to spread the news."

Moslem-majority Bangladesh is officially secular, but Moslem holy mans are hugely influential, particularly in the more socially conservative rural areas of the country.

Fatwas were banned in 2001, but the nation's highest court in 2011 ruled that they could be issued on personal and religious matters if they did not impose physical punishment.

Rights groups have criticised that ruling, saying villages far from Bangladesh's secular courts use fatwas to issue sentences that go against the nation's laws.

Women were once largely confined to the home in rural Bangladesh, but a labour shortage has meant millions now work in the fields during harvest or crop-sowing season.

Women also account for some 80 per cent of four million workers in the country's 4,500 textile plants, the mainstay of the impoverished nation's economy.

Police said the six arrested would face charges under the 1974 Special Powers Act, a controversial military-era law.

Lebanese army to get $120 mln in US aid
[Ynet] The United States, which wants to prevent violence spilling over from Syria into Leb, will give the Lebanese army $120 million more in aid to boost border security and counter-terrorism work, the US ambassador to Leb said on Wednesday.

Leb will get six MD 530G light attack helicopters, six Scan Eagle drones, and communication and night vision equipment under the new programmes, Ambassador Elizabeth Richard said after she met Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri.

The United States has given the Lebanese Armed Forces more than $1.5 billion in assistance over the past ten years, the Embassy has said previously.

The United States hopes to strengthen the Lebanese army to stop the spread of violence over the border from neighbouring Syria and help it become the sole military force defending the country.

US condemns deadly Ethiopia clashes
[PRESSTV] The United States on Wednesday said it was "troubled and saddened" by festivities in Æthiopia that local reports said has left at least 18 people dead.

The violence was reported to be most intense in the eastern town of Chelenko, near the volatile border between the Somali and Oromia regions, home to two of the country's largest ethnic groups.

There have been a string of recent festivities over the border between the two ethnically demarcated federal regions.

The cause of the latest violence is not clear, nor if they are linked, but they have raised concerns of growing ethnic divisions in Africa's second most-populous country.

"We are troubled and saddened by reports of violence that has resulted in deaths and injuries in the town of Chelenko and at several universities over the past two days," the US embassy in Æthiopia said in a statement.

Security forces reportedly killed 15 people on Sunday after protesters accused the police of killing a man, Oromia regional front man Addisu Arega said.

Two students were also reported killed on Sunday in separate festivities at the Wollega University campus in Oromia, while another person was reported killed at Adigrat University in Æthiopia's north.

"We encourage the people of Æthiopia to uphold their admirable and longstanding tradition of respect for their country's ethnic diversity and its tradition of peaceful co-existence," the embassy added. It did not give a corpse count or provide further details.

At least 23 members of one family killed in US airstrikes in Syria's Dayr al-Zawr
[PRESSTV] At least 23 Syrian civilians, including women and kiddies, have been killed in US Arclight airstrikes on the country's eastern Dayr al-Zawr province, says a UK-based monitoring group.

"At least 23 civilians, among them eight children and six women, were killed Wednesday before dawn by airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition, targeting a village controlled by ISIS on the eastern banks of the Euphrates river," said the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

It added that all of those killed were members of the same family and had taken shelter at the location when they were killed.

The US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against what are said to be ISIS targets inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate.

Day 4: Port Authority bomber’s Ansarullah Bangla Team connection, appearance before judge
[NYPost] Alleged Port Authority bomber Akayed Ullah was influenced by the sermons and writings of a radical Moslem preacher ‐ and tried to have his wife brainwashed by him as well, Bangladeshi officials said Wednesday.

Ullah, a 27-year-old Bangladeshi and self-described ISIS supporter, had asked his wife to read the writings and listen to the sermons of Moulana Jasimuddin Rahmani,
...who has had the attention of Bangladeshi coppers since 2007. Inspired by Anwar al-Awlaki, Muhammad Jasimuddin Rahmani‘s website was hosted on a server in Pakistan. His followers have included members of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (HuJI) and Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh...
the imprisoned leader of a banned group called Ansarullah Bangla Team,
...the Bangladeshi press, for some reason, always writes that as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), sometimes called simply Ansarullah. Ansar-al-Islam is the name they took when they became the Bangladeshi branch of Al Qaeda in the India Subcontinent. They are notorious for murdering secular Bangladeshi bloggers and writers, plus others who catch their malign attention. Two years ago a target list was found naming bloggers, writers, and activists living abroad, and in August an ABT man was arrested in India for recruiting for ISIS. That last would explain why our miscreant insisted so strongly his dastardly deed was dedicated to ISIS rather than Al Qaeda...
according to Monirul Islam, head of the country’s police counter-terrorism unit.

The group has been tied to killings and attacks on secular academics and atheist bloggers in Bangladesh. Rahmani is serving time in prison for his involvement in the killings.

Islam and his team interviewed Ullah’s wife, 25-year-old Jannatul Ferdous Jui, and other relatives for several hours, after picking them up at their rented apartment in central Dhaka.

Ullah’s wife was "surprised to find out what her husband did," despite speaking to him 30 minutes before the attack, Bangladeshi police told CNN.

His wife, who remained in Bangladesh when he moved Brooklyn, said he "never mentioned radicalization or planning these types of activities," police spokeswoman Sahely Ferdous told the network

"Akayed’s conversations with her were very normal," Ferdous said. "Akayed talked to his wife around 30 minutes before the kaboom, but he didn’t mention anything about the plan or what he was going to do."

A US resident since 2011, Ullah had visited Bangladesh in September to see his family, spending most of the time at home with their 6-month-old son, Islam said.

"Usually, he did not mix with any of his friends or relatives here. Most of the time he spent time in the house," Islam said. "We’re looking for his associates who he used to go to college or school with. We’re looking for them, we’ve not identified anyone yet."

US prosecutors on Tuesday brought federal charges against Ullah, accusing him of backing a foreign terrorist organization, but officials said he appeared to have no known links to local radical groups.
...though CAIR (Muslim Brotherhood in America) had no trouble finding the family afterward. But the local radical groups of Bangladesh are only a few keystrokes away.
“We have collected evidence and information from his family members: his wife, father-in-law and mother-in-law," Islam told Rooters.

Ullah’s relatives were under surveillance and would not be allowed to leave Dhaka without police permission.

"In Bangladesh we have not found any connection or have not been able to identify any of his associates who were or are involved with any terrorist groups," he added.

An American official familiar with the investigation of Monday’s attack said officers had found evidence that Ullah had watched ISIS propaganda online.

Islam said Bangladesh had passed on information on Ullah to US authorities, but there was no joint investigation.

"I’m not sure whether they will send any formal request for an investigation or inquiry," he said. "If they do, we’ll comply with the request because we’ve given highest priority on this issue because we have a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism."

Would-be suicide bomber in New York City faces court hearing

[IsraelTimes] In less than 24 hours, authorities say a would-be jacket wallah’s botched attack on a Manhattan transportation hub underneath Times Square became an open-and-shut case after a search of his apartment and hearing the suspect’s own words. Akayed Ullah, who’s expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday, made it clear from a hospital bed where he was being treated for burns from a pipe bomb he strapped to his body that he was on a mission to punish the United States for attacking the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group, said Acting US Attorney Joon Kim. A search of the Bangladeshi immigrant’s apartment turned up bomb-making materials, including screws matching those found at the scene intended as carnage-creating shrapnel.

"His motivation," the prosecutor says, "was not a mystery."

Kim says Ullah picked the morning rush on Monday to maximize casualties in his quest "to kill, to maim and to destroy."

Ullah, 27, with a hate-filled heart and an evil purpose," carried out the attack after researching how to build a bomb a year ago and planned his mission for several weeks, Kim says.

Subway bomb suspect detained, no bail requested

[Ynet] A Bangladeshi immigrant accused of setting off a pipe bomb in the New York City subway system has appeared in court by video from a hospital room to face terrorism charges and will remain detained.

Akayed Ullah is accused of setting off an explosive strapped to his body, badly injuring himself but no one else.

Ullah appeared briefly Wednesday before a US magistrate judge via video, shown on monitors in the courtroom. Two assistant public defenders stood beside his hospital bed but did not request bail.

Ullah nodded to acknowledge he understood when the judge read him his rights. He spoke only a few words, acknowledging a financial affidavit filled out on his behalf was "true and correct."

Ullah did not enter a plea because he has not been indicted. The judge gave prosecutors until January 13 to obtain an indictment.

Iraq PM Abadi: Peshmerga is part of Iraqi forces, contribution valued
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has valued he contribution of Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s forces (Peshmerga) in the country’s fight against Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
hard boys, a few days after the region decried Baghdad’s unrecognition.

"Peshmerga is part of our forces, and we have greeted them as we did other troops," Abadi said in a speech on the sidelines of a world summit on climate change in Gay Paree late Tuesday, which was published by his media office.

"Peshmerga have fought alongside the Iraqi army and the rest of our troops to liberate djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, and some wanted to separate the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army through the referendum and by playing them off against the army," Abadi said.

"Yet, we have said that Peshmerga are part of the Iraqi people and we should cooperate with them," the prime minister added.

Abadi was referring to a referendum Kurdistan Region held in September in which a majority voted for independence from Iraq, a measure which Baghdad deemed unconstitutional and ignited a political war and a later military confrontation which ended with Iraqi troops retaking Peshmerga-held areas disputed with Kurdistan.

Making a speech on Saturday celebrating victory in the three-year war against Islamic State snuffies in Iraq, Abadi seemed to fail to mention Peshmerga by name among the victorious troops, an incident strongly condemned by Kurdish politicians.

A front man of Abadi later attributed the incident to a typing error.

Minnesota governor announced Franken successor
[IsraelTimes] Minnesota’s governor Mark Dayton chose Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to fill Sen. Al Franken’s seat until the November election, and she will run in that election to complete the final two years of Franken’s term, a Democratic operative told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named.

Smith’s appointment was widely expected soon after Franken, under pressure over allegations of sexual misconduct, announced last week that he would step down. The appointment won’t change the balance of power in the Senate; both Franken and Smith are Democrats.

PHC bars govt from releasing former TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan

Pakistain (TTP) spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan

, asking that authorities continue investigating the former bully boy.

The decision was taken by a two-member bench of the court headed by PHC Chief Justice Yahya Afridi. The bench has been hearing a writ petition filed by Fazal Khan, father of a student killed in the December 16, 2014 Army Public School attack.

The petitioner believes that the government is planning to give clemency to the ex-militant, who is reportedly in the custody of security agencies.

The directive was issued after the federal government submitted a second report about Ehsan's incarceration, but failed to satisfy the court.

In its written reply, the government had stated that it was still investigating Ehsan. Telling the government to continue its probe, the court forbade his release on any grounds.

Ehsanullah Ehsan, who had been associated with TTP and later its splinter group, the Jamaatul Ahrar

Apprehensions regarding a possible pardon for and release of Ehsan were raised after his interviews to local media were released and aired.

Observers had asked why authorities deemed it okay to allow the representative of one of the most notorious terrorist groups space on national media.

IDF strikes Hamas targets in Gaza in response to rockets
[IsraelTimes] Army says 3 of terror group's military sites hit in Arclight airstrikes in retaliation for volley of rockets fired at southern Israeli town

The Israeli Air Force struck three Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", targets in the Gazoo Strip overnight Wednesday-Thursday, in retaliation for a volley of rockets fired at Israel from the Hamas-controlled enclave.

The IDF front man in a statement said Israeli warplanes struck military training sites and weapons storage facilities used by the terrorist group.

"Israel will not allow any attempts to injure or harm its citizens, and will continue to protect them and its own illusory sovereignty in a decisive manner," the IDF statement said.

Reports in Paleostinian media reported airstrikes near Khan Younis in the southern Strip and to the west of Gazoo City.

Earlier on Wednesday night, four rockets were fired from Gazoo at southern Israel. Two of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, a third struck an open field and the fourth fell short of the border and hit a school in the Gazoo Strip, according to Israeli officials. The rocket that fell short destroyed an empty classroom in Beit Hanoun’s Ghazi al-Shawa public school, according to the IDF.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage caused by the Gazoo rockets themselves, but two Israelis were treated for anxiety attacks and a man in his 30s lightly injured his leg while running to a rocket shelter, the Magen David Adom rescue service said.

The rocket launches on Wednesday night triggered sirens that sent Israelis running for cover in the town of Sderot, as well as in the Eshkol, Sha’ar Hanegev, Sdot Hanegev and Hof Ashkelon regions, the army said.

A video filmed in Sderot showed the kabooms in the air as an Iron Dome interceptor missile collided with an incoming rocket.

In response to the increased fire, Israel said it would close its crossings with the Gazoo Strip in a rare punitive measure. The army said the Kerem Shalom Crossing, from which goods enter and leave the Strip, as well as the pedestrian Erez Crossing would be shuttered beginning on Thursday, in light of "security events and in accordance with security assessments."

For over a decade, Israel and Egypt have maintained a blockade on Gazoo, which they say is necessary to keep arms and other materials that can be used for military purposes out of the hands of Hamas and other Paleostinian terror groups. Israel allows goods to be brought into and out of Gazoo on a daily basis, under heavy supervision, through the Kerem Shalom Crossing. Egypt, meanwhile, operates the Rafah Crossing into Sinai, but only opens it occasionally.

While the Gazoo crossings are typically closed for Jewish and national holidays, it is uncommon for Israel to shut them for punitive reasons.

The army did not say when the crossings would reopen.

The last week has seen the largest number of rockets fired at Israel from the Strip since the 2014 Gazoo war. According to Israeli assessments, these rockets are not being launched by Hamas, but by other terrorist groups in the Strip.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for all rocket fire and other attacks emanating from the Strip, which the terror group still overwhelmingly controls despite handing over some power back to the Paleostinian Authority.

Senior Hamas leader among dozens arrested overnight in West Bank
[IsraelTimes] Sheik Hassan Yusef detained on suspicion of 'promoting' the terror group's activities amid spike in violence, Shin Bet says

Israeli troops, in raids across the West Bank overnight Tuesday, locked away
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
32 Paleostinians for suspected involvement in terror activities and violent rioting, as well as a senior Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", figure, security forces said.

Sheikh Hassan Yusef, a Hamas leader in the West Bank and one of the group’s founding members, was arrested in Ramallah, the Shin Bet security service said.

He is suspected of "involvement in promoting and advancing Hamas’s activities in the West Bank," it confirmed in a statement after Paleostinian media broke news of the arrest.

Yusef was recently released from administrative detention, and has been arrested many times in recent years. Earlier this week, he called for a violent response to US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Since Trump announced his decision last Wednesday, the West Bank has seen daily protests that have at time devolved into festivities.

Alongside the festivities in the West Bank, recent days have seen an escalation in violence around Gazoo, where Yusef’s Hamas group holds sway.

In the latest in a series of tit-for-tat exchanges, the Israeli Air Force early Wednesday morning struck a Hamas facility in the southern Gazoo Strip in retaliation for Paleostinian rocket fire hours earlier.

During the overnight raids, IDF medics treated an elderly Paleostinian woman who had a heart attack in the village of al-Zubeidat, near Jericho, but eventually pronounced her dead after their efforts failed.

The IDF denied implications made by Paleostinian media that the woman’s heart attack was triggered by stun grenades thrown by Israeli troops after residents threw rocks at them. An army official said the two incidents were unrelated, happening at significantly different times during the night.
An Nahar adds:
"In response to the projectile fired from the Gazoo Strip at Israel earlier, the Israel air force targeted a Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", military compound in the southern Gazoo Strip," the army said on Wednesday.

Gazoo security officials said that aircraft hit a Hamas naval base west of the city of Khan Yunis and open land nearby.

Three Paleostinians were lightly maimed in the strikes, the health ministry in Gazoo said. No casualties were reported on the Israeli side.

Border Police arrest 367 Palestinians residing in Israel illegally

[IsraelTimes] In a massive sting targeting Palestinians residing in Israel illegally, the Border Police arrests 367 Palestinian suspects, including 38 from the Gaza Strip, according to a police statement.

Another 29 people are arrested for allegedly providing accommodations and transportation to the suspected illegal residents.

The Palestinians from Gaza were arrested during a raid on a residential area in Umm al-Fahm.

Police arrest sweep turns up firearms meant for terror groups

[IsraelTimes] According to police, 1,000 officers took part in the massive arrest sweep targeting Palestinians residing in Israel illegally.

The operation also uncovers weapons police believe are meant to be transferred to terror groups, including three firearms, 55 gas canisters that were reconfigured into bombs, 16 firebombs and two pipe bombs.

Harvardite confesses to comparing pretty girls
Oh. The horror...
[TheCollegeFix] A Harvard student recently made a bold public declaration, admitting that, while at a bar with friends one time, he talked about the attractiveness of the women in his class.

Daniel Hanrahan, a master’s student in Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, wrote in The Harvard Crimson this week that “the Harvard community is responsible for sexual assault.” Hanrahan notes that, while the men who sexually assault women are ultimately the ones responsible for their crimes, we should also not ignore “the behavior of people not directly involved in sexual assaults.” It is up to bystanders, Hanrahan writes, to help put an end to sexual assault culture.

“Had their enablers taken the harder, riskier option and spoken up,” Hanrahan writes, “[Harvey] Weinstein and [Roy] Moore might have been stopped. Had more people in the Harvard community spoken up to combat sexist comments and behaviors, the strength of rape culture on campus would have weakened and assaults might have been prevented.”

“We are all responsible for preventing sexual assaults on campus and in the wider community,” Hanarahan says. “To help us do so, the Harvard administration should survey and report on sexual assault annually, like they did in 2015.”

Yet Hanrahan does not let himself off easily. “As a male student at the Harvard Kennedy School,” he writes, “I have readily joined the chorus condemning Weinstein and Moore’s disgusting abuse of power. But concentrating criticism on these (rightly) vilified perpetrators reveals a problem with our approach to sexual assault. We are only focusing on some of the people who are responsible for sexual assault. We are ignoring, for example, people like me.”

Hanrahan recounts a harrowing tale from early last school year:

During Orientation Week in August of 2016, I was out late drinking in Harvard Square with two classmates. The topic switched to the women in our class. Over the drunken hum of the bar’s collective conversation, one guy proposed the “hottest” girls in our class. The other did the same. They both then asked me to rank the girls in our cohort in the order I wanted to get with. My alarmed heart bolted blood to my cheeks. I crossed my arms, unable to speak. “Are we making you uncomfortable?” one asked me. I cannot remember my exact response. But it was not: “Yes. Objectifying women, even though it seems harmless to you, demeans them and creates an environment that makes sexual assault more likely.” Instead, I uncrossed my arms, I shook my head, and yes, I discussed which girls were hot.
How awful
Hanrahan is up-front about his moral failure to say something to his friends that night: “At the time, it was easy for me to discard my act of cowardice as inconsequential. The desire to be included made the risk of speaking up too great. During many similar ‘inconsequential’ comments at the pub and locker rooms throughout my life, I know I’ve taken the easy way out.”

“My silence lies on a continuum of complicity,” Hanrahan writes, “complicity that allows sexual assault to occur.”

Iraq
Ninevah and Mosul: 2 bombs, a clash, arrests, and another Yezidi mass grave
Just another day in Ninevah province...
Five women arrested in Tal Afar

Anbar (Iraqinews.com) A security source said five women were arrested at Tal Afar district in Mosul while trying to infiltrate into the Iraqi-Syrian border.

They were taken to a police station for interrogation, the source told Baghdad Today website.

Thirteen security personnel killed in clashes with IS members, west of Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Thirteen security personnel, including a leader, were killed on Tuesday in an armed attack launched by Islamic State militants, west of Mosul, Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported.

“Around 100 IS members launched an attack against military barracks and checkpoints of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) in the desert region of Tal Sufuk, west of Mosul, near Iraqi-Syrian borders,” Cap. Sabhan al-Wardi, of the army, said.

“Clashes occurred between both sides for an hour, before the militants retreated back to the depth of the desert after military reinforcements from the army joined the PMFs,” he added.

“PMFs lost 13 fighters, including leader known as Abu Jaafar al-Tayyar. Some of their machinery were highly damaged,” according to Wardi. “Two trucks of the militants were found destroyed with blood on them, however, no bodies of the militants were found, which indicates that the group took back its victims and injured before retreating.”

Three people injured in bomb explosion at Mosul house

Nineveh (Iraqinews.com) Three people were injured after a bomb exploded at a house in Mosul city on Wednesday, a security source told Shafaq News.

“Unidentified gunmen hurled a bomb at a house owned by a brother of an IS militant at al-Askari (military) district south of Mosul, injuring three people,” the source said.

Three Iraqi police members killed in blast west of Mosul

Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Three Iraqi Federal Police members were killed in a blast that targeted their patrol in western Mosul, a security official was quoted saying Wednesday.

Rudaw quoted the Cap. Saad al-Jubouri, from the Federal Police, saying that an advanced explosive device exploded late Tuesday in a five-vehicle police patrol passing at Hakna, Zummar, west of Mosul, killing three members and wounding a fourth.

He said the road had been fully secured by the forces, suggesting that the bomb was recently planted.

Mass grave with relics of 50 people found in Nineveh’s Sinjar

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A mass grave containing the relics of at least 50 people was found in western Nineveh, according to a security source quoted on Wednesday.

Shafaq News quoted the source saying that security forces ran into the grave in Sinjar, northwest of Mosul.

The forces await expert teams to arrive and explore the finding, according to the source.

As Iraqi troops recaptured areas held by Islamic State militants since October 2016, they have regularly run into mass graves of civilians and security agents executed by militants for fleeing the group’s havens or collaborating with security forces.

Sinjar is the habitat of the Iraqi Yazidi religious minority, which came under the international spotlights after Islamic State militants took over the region in 2014, massacred and enslaved them in the thousands.

OIC declares East Jerusalem as Palestinian capital
They shout because nobody is listening, including themselves.
[Al Jazeera] The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has declared East Jerusalem as the capital of Paleostine, rejected the US stance as "dangerous" and called on the international community to follow in its footsteps.

At a summit held in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
a week after US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
declared Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the group of Moslem leaders on Wednesday called on all countries to "recognise the State of Paleostine and East Jerusalem as its occupied capital".

In a statement, the OIC added that the 57-member group remains committed to a "just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution".

It also called on the UN to "end the Israeli occupation" of Paleostine and declared Trump's administration liable for "all the consequences of not retracting from this illegal decision".

"[We] consider that this dangerous declaration, which aims to change the legal status of the [city], is null and void and lacks any legitimacy," the group said.

Marwan Bishara, Al Jazeera's senior political analyst, said the summit in Istanbul highlighted that Paleostinians, Arabs and Moslems continue to be committed to peace.

"Now, Moslem countries in addition to a whole lot of others that are allied with the Paleostinian cause will recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Paleostine," he said.

"And those Islamic countries are ready to sever relations to punish any one country that follows in the footsteps of the United States in recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel."
You mean you won’t sell them oil?? Hey, Joe — fire up the frackers! And pass the word to Canada and Russia — the competition just quit, cold turkey!

#1  I am christan and the last of my mother’s line. I have visited Jerusalem and Nazareth (which is in Paleostinean hands). Jerusalem’s religious areas, under Israeli control was free and clean. To visit Christ’s birth place in Nazareth involved paying graft to get in. I would not want any control of the religious areas of any faith under control of the Paleostinians.

#6  It gets to point where these pencil-pushing bureaucrats are impeding justice rather than furthering justice. It is difficult to watch these hearings. Congress should have some legal recourse to be able to fulfill their Constitutional function without having to swim throuh Swamp mud. I suppose they could slash agency budgets biggly. That might stop this game-playing B.S. by agencies.

I see them succeeding if we stay the course.

Vienna Convention doesn’t apply to spy operations, Pakistan tells ICJ
[DAWN] Pakistain has told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a counter memorial to the Indian claim that the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, applies only to the legitimate visitors and does not cover clandestine operations.

In its memorial formally filed before the ICJ on Wednesday, Pakistain argued that Indian spy commander Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav was on an active duty and the only deduction that one could make was that he was a spy sent inside Pakistain on a special mission to carry out subversive activities.

A senior government officer privy to the development told Dawn on condition of anonymity that India had no case to plead because it never denied that Jadhav was travelling on a passport on a cover or an assumed Moslem name "Mubarak Patel".

The ICJ, a world court that sits at the Peace Palace in The Hague, is seized with an Indian complaint on the conviction of the Indian spy and had set a deadline of Dec 13 by which Pakistain had to submit its counter-pleadings or counter memorial against the Indian claims. The formal hearing of the case is expected to commence late February or early March next year.

Police recover 13 bonded labourers from 'private jail' near Nagarparkar
[DAWN] Police on Wednesday recovered 13 bonded individuals who had allegedly been kept in illegal confinement for five years in a private jail in the village of Ramji Kohli near Nagarparkar.

A police team headed by Station House Officer (SHO) Nagarpakar Abdul Razak Umrani, in a court-ordered raid in the village on the suspected private jail of Rahim Ali Khoso, recovered the labourers, including four women and five children.

Dharmoon Kohli had petitioned the court seeking liberation of his family members. He told journalists that his family members had allegedly been kept in confinement and forced to work without any share in their agricultural yield.

The recovered individuals alleged that the women among them had been victims of sexual harassment by the landowner and his relatives.

The SHO said that they would be produced in the Sindh High Court on Thursday as per the court's orders.

Pakistain is among the countries with the highest number of bonded labourers in the world.

In a 2015 Dawn report, Green Rural Development Organisation's Dr Ghulam Haider had said that over 2.3 million people are facing bonded labour, with over 80 per cent of them being Hindus.

Musharraf urges Pakistan to back UAE, Saudi Arabia against Qatar
[DAWN] Former president retired Gen Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
continues to make headlines with his outspoken views.

At 74, the former army chief, who lives with his mother and wife in a tastefully decorated apartment in downtown Dubai, still displays the toughness associated with a soldier. He runs his own political party, the All Pakistain Moslem League (APML), and is facing several court cases.

In an exclusive interview with Arab News, he spoke about various issues facing Pakistain and beyond. Mr Musharraf criticised the Pakistain government for not siding with the Anti-Terror Quartet (ATQ) ‐ comprising Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain ‐ against Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
. "I’m shocked at how the Pakistain government dealt with the Qatar crisis. Qatar was never with Pakistain, and we witnessed this many a time," he said.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE "have always been Pakistain’s great friends. We must never do anything that’s against either country ‐ both have always stood by us, and we must value their friendship", he added.

Citing the Pakistain’s ruling party’s business interests in Qatar, he said his country’s "larger interests were ignored over personal business interests. If that’s the priority, then God save our country".

Gen Musharraf’s words and deeds on Kashmire continue to be an area of interest for most observers and stakeholders.

"I’ve started working for the cause by taking a big initiative on the resolution of the Kashmire issue," he said.

"I and other like-minded people have formed a group that consists of popular and prominent people from Pakistan, India and both sides of Kashmire. We’ll go to the UN, and the Indian and Pak governments," he added.

"The Kashmire issue can be resolved, and I strongly believe that the present Indian government is capable of doing it because they represent the hard-liners."
