IRS awards multimillion-dollar fraud-prevention no bid contract to Equifax
[Politico] The IRS will pay Equifax $7.25 million to verify taxpayer identities and help prevent fraud under a no-bid contract issued last week, even as lawmakers lash the embattled company about a massive security breach that exposed personal information of as many as 145.5 million Americans.
Because it isn't graft when WE do it!!
A contract award for Equifax's data services was posted to the Federal Business Opportunities database Sept. 30 ‐ the final day of the fiscal year. The credit agency will "verify taxpayer identity" and "assist in ongoing identity verification and validations" at the IRS, according to the award.

The notice describes the contract as a "sole source order," meaning Equifax is the only company deemed capable of providing the service. It says the order was issued to prevent a lapse in identity checks while officials resolve a dispute over a separate contract.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle blasted the IRS decision.

"In the wake of one of the most massive data breaches in a decade, it’s irresponsible for the IRS to turn over millions in taxpayer dollars to a company that has yet to offer a succinct answer on how at least 145 million Americans had personally identifiable information exposed," Senate Finance Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) told POLITICO in a statement.

The committee's ranking member, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), piled on: "The Finance Committee will be looking into why Equifax was the only company to apply for and be rewarded with this. I will continue to take every measure possible to prevent taxpayer data from being compromised as this arrangement moves forward."

The IRS defended its decision in a statement, saying that Equifax told the agency that none of its data was involved in the breach and that Equifax already provides similar services to the IRS under a previous contract.

"Following an internal review and an on-site visit with Equifax, the IRS believes the service Equifax provided does not pose a risk to IRS data or systems," the statement reads. "At this time, we have seen no indications of tax fraud related to the Equifax breach, but we will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Equifax did not respond to requests for comment.
Equifax should be fined out of existence. Every person's record they lost should be reimbursed $500,000-$1 million, since that is the average cost of lost credit, higher intrest rates and time spent cleaning up the mess these idiots made.

#1  1. Perfect choice. Who knows more about fraud than Equifax!

2. People are focusing on the wrong aspect of the Equifax breach. Yes, they were stupid and incompetent. So what? That data has already been leaked by a dozen companies and government agencies, and it will be leaked again. All your data was available for $10 on the dark web before the Equifax breach. So, the question isn't whether Equifax can be trusted with your data, it's whether anyone can. And if no one can be trusted with it, then why are they allowed to have it?

#2  Equifax should
(1) have fines assessed for damages as mentioned before
(2) have civil lawsuits attached all remaining assets
(3) have illicit stock gains / compensation to their execs clawed back
(4) 1-3 being done, have their corporate charter revoked.

Criminal penalties for the C-level folks are fine, but don't solve the underlying problem. Everyone everywhere has all your data. Now.

The White House and Equifax Agree: Social Security Numbers Should Go
[Blooberg] The Trump administration is exploring ways to replace the use of Social Security numbers as the main method of assuring people’s identities in the wake of consumer credit agency Equifax Inc.’s massive data breach.

The administration has called on federal departments and agencies to look into the vulnerabilities of employing the identifier tied to retirement benefits, as well as how to replace the existing system, according to Rob Joyce, special assistant to the president and White House cybersecurity coordinator.

"I feel very strongly that the Social Security number has outlived its usefulness," Joyce said Tuesday at a cyber conference in Washington organized by the Washington Post. "Every time we use the Social Security number, you put it at risk."
Yes, it was a quaint, manual process. You were provided a secure numbered account to which a small percentage of your earnings would be placed in the form of a tax. A half-century or so later, you would receive a modest annuity on which you would again pay taxes.
Joyce’s comments came as former Equifax CEO Richard Smith testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, the first of four hearings this week on Capitol Hill. Lawmakers from both parties expressed outrage over the size of the breach as well as the company’s response and grilled Smith on the timeline of the incident, including when top executives learned about it.

#2  This is a good idea.

I'm certain each party to the owner of the SSN should have their own signed SSHash and salt, and the real "SSN" is never revealed, just allowed by it's owner to be salted, hashed and shared.

Modern (good scanners, not the shit ones on phones) scan up to 7 skin layers deep and are designed to look for blood flow. We used such a system in the two factor authentication system for doctors to digitally send pr3scriptions for schedule 3 drugs to the ph@rmacy as part of a pilot program with the feds so the patients didn't need a physical script.

There is still a problem with this level of security, and especially if it is stored locally, is that all this is still a hash. Hashes can be stolen and used to impersonate another account.

Lots of ways to minimize the risk of this, but the risk of a good biometric system having its data stolen is far, far less than what we have now with passwords and numbers.

#9  The DoD uses something like the above as well to authenticate users. You need 3 things to do so.

Something you have
Something you know
Something you are

CAC card. Programed card with your account logon information. Similar to credit/debit cards with the chip in them.

A password or pin

A fingerprint or Iris scan

Nearly impossible for a hacker to get all 3 and a physical imposter could only get the first two.

Hit The NFL Where It Hurts: Their Sponsors (Full List)
[Vets Before Illegals] When Americans tune in to watch football on TV, the last thing they want to be hit with is anti-American players demanding they are "oppressed" while making millions, using the National Anthem and U.S. Flag as a cowardly outlet for their own media attention. They claim "injustices" are "all over the place" and harming minorities, yet somehow have donated nothing to their own communities or taken action of any kind to help others.

As players continue to protest, the NFL continues to not only allow it, but highlight it. Somehow football is now less about sports and more about politically-charged statements from cocky players who think they can call the shots while ignoring their fans. And NFL officials are content to let it happen because it pushes their liberal agenda.

Unless you make the NFL hurt financially, they will continue to breed an atmosphere of disrespect and contempt towards our National Anthem, Flag, and Military Members.

Last week we spoke about the huge Veterans Day protest being planned, and that is a huge step in the right direction. But it isn’t enough to make the full impact needed to really make the NFL realize "they done messed up".

Afghanistan
General Mattis reveals new rules of engagement
[Marine Times] WASHINGTON ‐ U.S. forces are no longer bound by requirements to be in contact with enemy forces in Afghanistan before opening fire, thanks to a change in rules of engagement orchestrated by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis.

Mattis, appearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joe Dunford told a pair of congressional hearings that the White House gave him a free hand to reconsider the rules of engagement and alter them to speed the battle against the Taliban if need be.

Over the last several years, many top officials in Washington have advocated for a loosening of the rules of engagement that dictate how troops conduct combat operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.

Changes could allow the U.S. military to move more quickly to defeat terrorist organizations. Rules of engagement are classified, and military officials generally do not discuss them.

However, there were signs that changes to those rules of engagement were coming. In his Aug. 21 speech announcing his Afghianstan strategy, President Donald Trump said he would "lift restrictions and expand authorities" for warfighters.

"We will also expand authorities for American armed forces to target the terrorists and criminal networks that sow violence and chaos throughout Afghanistan," Trump said at the time.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Texas Lawyer Says Neighbors Need To Stop Complaining About His New Tank
[Zero Hedge] Wealthy homeowners in one tiny Fort Worth suburb say their neighbor’s decision to park a World War II-era tank in front of his multimillion-dollar home is making them nervous.

At least that’s what attorney Tony Buzbee, a history buff who purchased the WWII tank for $600,000 earlier this year, learned when his neighborhood homeowners’ association sent him a letter saying the tank "impedes traffic" and causes a "safety issue" and "serious concerns for neighbors."

Buzbee says he’s temporarily storing the tank at his River Oaks, Texas home before moving it out to his ranch in East Texas later this year. But even though he’s made it clear that the tank’s presence is temporary, his neighbors are pressing him to remove the tank as soon as possible, according to Houston’s KHOU television station.

VA chief under investigation over European trip
[The Hill] The Department of Veteran Affairs inspector general is investigating Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin over his trip to Europe, CNN reported Tuesday.

Shulkin traveled to London and Demark in July, where he met with officials from both counties.

Michael Nacincik, spokesman for the VA inspector general's office, told CNN that he couldn’t say what triggered the probe or if the office was investigating any other instances of Shulkin’s travel.

The Washington Post first reported last week that Shulkin spent half of the trip sightseeing and shopping with his wife.

The VA chief was there to attended a conference in London on veterans’ health issues and then held a series of meetings in Denmark.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
TV host Mike Rowe offers words of comfort to Vegas victim
BLUF:
[Daily Caller] Returning to his fan’s question, he continued, "I’m sorry, Molly. I know these are not comforting words. The world is as uncertain as the people in it, and we share this rock with some very uncertain folks. But we also share it with living proof that hope will never die."

Rowe then offered Molly advice on where comfort could be found. "Take comfort in men who threw themselves over other people’s children. They are no less real than the killer, and they are still with us," he said. "Take comfort in the woman who loaded wounded strangers into her car and drove them out of harm’s way. Take comfort in the hundreds of first responders who risk their lives every day, and the hundreds of anonymous citizens who stood in line to give their blood. Take comfort in the fact all good people are shattered, and that you are not alone."

"There are no words, Molly, at least in my vocabulary, to bring you the comfort you seek," he acquiesced. "But there are people among us who restore my faith in the species, even as others seek to rob me of it. I can introduce you to those people. That’s what I’ve tried to do with my little slice of cyber space, and that’s what I can do today. The same thing I do every Tuesday."

He then offered an episode of his show, "Returning The Favor," as an example of everyday people doing something small, something significant, to offer comfort to others who do the extraordinary.

"This is Momma Ginger. Momma and her fellow Soup Ladies spend their lives waiting for disaster and tragedy to strike," he said. "When the unthinkable happens, they drive to the scene with a trailer filled with homemade soup, and feed the first-responders."

"It sounds like a small thing. It isn’t. When it comes to kindness, there are no small things."

Cancers linked to excess weight make up 40% of all US diagnoses, study finds
[PJ] Cancers associated with being overweight or obese account for 40% of all diagnoses of the disease in the United States, an increasing share of all cancer diagnoses nationwide.

Although new cases of cancer have fallen since the 1990s, diagnoses of overweight- and obesity-linked cancers increased between 2005 and 2014, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Being overweight is associated with increased risk for 13 types of cancer.

"When we step back and lump together all the types of cancer associated with overweight and obesity, we saw a direction upwards," said Anne Schuchat, deputy director of the CDC.

"That’s not a smoking gun, but it’s a note of caution for us."

Researchers at the CDC used data from the US Cancer Statistics database from 2005 to 2014, looking specifically at cancers the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies as linked to being overweight.

The study looked at cancers more likely to occur in people who are overweight or obese. These cancers are linked to being overweight, but are not necessarily caused by being overweight.

Former Abortion Workers Speak Out
[Free Beacon] As Congress takes up a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, a group of former clinic employees are speaking out against Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry.

Four former workers‐two managers and one health educator at Planned Parenthood and a former nurse at a Louisiana abortion clinic‐spoke out against what they say are common practices inside the industry. The group argued abortion providers are motivated by profit and lacked the counseling capacity to serve patients.

"If [a] pregnancy test was positive, the following morning she was scheduled to come in for counseling. We didn't tell her we were scheduling her in to come and get an abortion, but when she came in that morning, she was scheduled for an abortion," nurse Shelley Guillory says in the three-minute video. "The counseling was done by a phlebotomist‐it was never ever done by a licensed professional. Usually by the time myself or the doctor arrived, the counseling was already completed."

Former Planned Parenthood manager Annette Lancaster said the organization seeks to speed the process along, in order to build the momentum toward abortion, rather than adoption or other services.

Michelle Obama: ‘People Don't Trust Politics' Because GOP Is ‘All Men, All White'
[Breitbart] Tuesday at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women, former first lady Michelle Obama said when she attended the State of the Union address she would notice the Republican side was "all men, all white," and that was why she argued many people of color "don’t trust politics."

Speaking about diversity, Obama said, "We should be working actively to mix it up, so we’re getting a real broad range of perspectives on every issue. Shoot, I would see that in Congress."

She explained, "At the State of the Union address ... when you are in the room what you can see is this real dichotomy. It’s a feeling of color almost. On one side of the room is literally gray and white. Literally, that is the color palette on one side of the room. On the other side of the room, there are yellows and blues and whites and greens. Physically, there’s a difference in color, in the tone, because on one side all men, all white, on the other side some woman, some people of color."

She continued, "I look at that, and I go, no wonder. No wonder we struggle, no wonder people don’t trust politics. We’re not even noticing what these rooms look like."

‘Monday Night Football' Ratings Crash, As Fans Continue to Bail on the NFL and ESPN
[Breitbart] The NFL allowed players to use the league’s national stage to disgrace the flag and the anthem. The NFL also chose to take the players side against the leader of the free world, when he rightfully called those players out. As a result, it appears the league may have done irreparable harm to its brand.

The ratings for Monday Night Football on ESPN tanked hard in Week 4.

According to Yahoo! Entertainment, "Coming off last week’s Dallas Cowboys’ 28-17 win over the Arizona Cardinals, where the ratings actually went up for MNF, last night’s game was not a victory for the Disney-owned cable giant nor the NFL in the early numbers.

"Against a packed Big 4 primetime, MNF snared an 8.4 in metered market numbers. That’s down 10% from the Cowboys and Cardinals game of September 25. Year-to-year, the Chiefs’ fourth straight win this season dipped 8% in the early numbers from the comparable Minnesota Vikings’ 24-10 win over the New York Giant on October 3, 2016 ‐ a season of sliding ratings that the NFL wants to forget, but may repeat."

It can’t be understated how bad these numbers are for the NFL. But first, some will say that Kansas City is not a major-market team and that has something to do with the poor performance, especially coming off last week, which featured Dallas and Arizona.

Arabia
Saudi Arabia carries out 100th execution this year
[DAWN] A Saudi was executed on Monday in Riyadh, the official SPA news agency reported, taking to 100 the number of people put to death in the kingdom so far this year.

The man was sentenced to death for murdering another Saudi man and an appeals court upheld the ruling, SPA said without elaborating.

Amnesia Amnesty International condemned what it called Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's "execution spree".

"This sets the country firmly on track to remain one of the most prolific executioners on the planet," said Lynn Maalouf, director of research for Amnesty in the Middle East.

"If the Saudi authorities are truly intent on making reforms, they must immediately establish an official moratorium on executions as a first step towards abolishing the death penalty completely," he remarked.

Ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia has one of the world's highest rates of execution, with suspects convicted of terrorism, homicide, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking facing the death penalty.

The kingdom is governed under a strict form of Islamic law. Saudi Arabia reported 153 people executed last year, a number confirmed by Amnesia Amnesty International.

Egypt imam accused of marrying off underage girls
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An imam in Egypt faces a disciplinary hearing over accusations that he married off 27 underage girls, the administrative prosecution authority which monitors civil servants including imams said on Monday.

Egyptian law prohibits the registered marriage of men and women under 18, although it does not prohibit informal marriages that are not officially registered.

"The crime comes under the category of human trafficking cases," said Mohammed Samir, front man for the authority.

The imam was allegedly "implicated in the marriages of nearly 27 minor" females, Samir said.

The holy man presided over El-Arbaeen mosque in Meet Habeeb village in the Nile delta province of al-Gharbiya north of Cairo.

News of the case comes after President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi expressed shock at the number of minors being married, highlighted in official figures released on Saturday.

"I was surprised that the number of married 12-year-olds was not small," Sisi said.

"This is something that pains me and pains anyone with a real conscience who cares for their sons and daughters."

According to the 2017 census, up to 118,000 girls under the legal age of 18 were married, statistics bureau chief Abo Bakr el-Gendy said on Saturday.

The administrative prosecution began investigating the imam after a mother issued a complaint against him, it said.

The mother complained that he had "married off her daughter and many minor girls under the legal age in informal marriages," a statement from the authority said.

The ministry of religious endowments has decided to "prevent this preacher from ascending to the pulpit or leading people in mosques", ministry front man Gaber Tayea told AFP.

The ministry also "referred him to the ethics committee" in preparation for his possible dismissal if the allegations are proven, Tayea added.

Egyptian police kill three Hasm militants in Greater Cairo suburb: Ministry
[AlAhram] Egyptian police said they have killed three members of the Hasm bully boy group in a shootout in a Greater Cairo suburb, a statement by the interior ministry said on Monday.

The ministry says the two suspects, identified as Mohammed Abdel Karim Marei and Mahmoud Barakat, as well as another unnamed member, shot at police on Sunday evening as police attempted to apprehend them in 15th of May, a suburb in Eastern Helwan.

The three men were wanted in a terrorism-related operation known as the "Hasm Movement Action," which was under investigation by Homeland Security.

According to the statement, the three suspected turbans were planning to carry out an attack in the near future.

Hasm has grabbed credit for a number of attacks against Egyptian security personnel in recent months, mostly targeting police checkpoints.

Egyptian security forces have placed in durance vile
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!

Judge hands-off trial of Boko Haram factional leader, Albarnawi, 8 others
[VANGUARDNGR] Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, disqualified himself from further presiding over the trial of a factional leader of the Boko Haram sect, Mohammed Usman (aka Khalid Albarnawi).

Justice Tsoho withdrew from the case following the allegation by some of the defendants that he was biased. Albarnawi who was identified as the head of a Boko Haram splinter group that specialised in kidnapping and murder of foreigners, is facing trial alongside eight other alleged members of the sect- Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (a.k.a ANSARU); Mohammed Sani, Abubakar Abdulrahman Habibu, Mohammed Bashir Saleh, Umar Mohammed Bello (aka Abu Azzan); Mohammed Salisu (Datti); Yakubu Nuhu (aka Bello Maishayi), and a lady, Halima Haliru. The defendants are answering to an 11-count terrorism charge the Federal Government preferred against them.

They had on March 14 when they were docked before the high court, pleaded not giulty to the charge, even as the trial Judge remanded them in Kuje Prison. However, sequel to subsequent application by the Federal Government, Justice Tsoho, on April 25, reversed his earlier ruling and gave the Department of State Service, DSS, the nod to retain the defendants in its custody pending conclusion of the trial.

Consequently, at the resumed sitting on the matter yesterday, five of the defendants, through their lawyers, said they were no longer confident in the ability of the judge to handle their trial objectively. Insisting that they have lost confidence in Justice Tsoho, the defendants said they would prefer to face trial before another judge of the high court.

The five defendants, through their counsel, N.I. Momoh, Samuel Attah, and Elisha Oloruntoba, accused Justice Tsoho of dancing to the tune of FG regarding their trial. Besides, they alleged that condition of the DSS detention facility greatly worsened their health status, saying they were constantly denied access to their family members and legal representatives.

Young Egyptian man caught wearing ‘niqab’ to meet his girlfriend
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A young Egyptian man was caught wearing "niqab" as he went to his girlfriend's house to meet her, but the villagers beat him up and handed him over to security.

Major General Redha Tablia, head of security of al-Sharqeya governorate, received a report stating that a number of residents of the village of Sowada Abu Shalabi held a man wearing "niqab" to sneak into his girlfriend's home in the absence of her family.

The villagers noted the young man's way of walking and his shoes before stopping him and removing the veil.

They beat him up and took him on a humiliating tour around the village.

The young man, Ahmed, 22, said that after returning from a vacation outside Egypt, he went to see his friend in the absence of her family because he loves her and her father refused his marriage proposals many times.

Pakistan’s ousted PM Sharif re-elected as head of his party

... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
has been re-elected as president of the country’s ruling party, the Pakistain Moslem League, despite the scandal surrounding his dismissal from office.

His re-election on Tuesday came after parliament the previous day approved a bill allowing officials disqualified by courts to hold party offices.

The Supreme Court in July dismissed Sharif over concealing financial assets and he is now facing trial before an anti-corruption court.

Pakistain’s opposition parties have said they would challenge the new bill in court, saying it was just a means of paving way for Sharif’s stay as party president.

Also on Monday, an anti-graft tribunal postponed Sharif’s indictment for a week after his children, who are co-defendants in the case, failed to appear in court.

Trump visits hurricane-wracked Puerto Rico
[Iran Press TV] US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
has arrived in hurricane-wracked Puerto Rico, hoping to highlight federal recovery efforts and repair damage done by his controversial early response to the crisis.

Trump’s trip to the US territory of Puerto Rico on Tuesday, normally a fairly routine show of presidential empathy, has taken on outsized political meaning.

During roughly five hours on ground, the president will meet first responders, officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well as survivors.

Already this storm season, Trump has visited hurricane-damaged states of Texas, Louisiana and Florida.

"It's been amazing what's been done in a very short period of time on Puerto Rico," Trump told news hounds, defending the response.

"There's never been a piece of land that we've known that was so devastated," he claimed.

#8  This President has done better than any in disaster relief. He has had people on the ground in every instance and he hired very well.

It is of my opinion that when we had our fire storm back in March, someone very high up was coordinating with states to ease trucking regulations in order to allow oversize/overweight rigs to travel all across the Midwest in order to deliver hay and fencing supplies. That was happening before we even had the fire out.

Same thing for the North Dakota draught. Those two actions probably saved 1,000,000+ head of cattle, and I am not exaggerating.

Again, for the Montana fire complex.

And again for Harvey. Hay was on its way before the storm had even passed. The Cajun Navy was given a pass. Remember when we first discovered the Cajun Navy, afterwards the Obama administration was going to requiring licensing and training, registration for anyone performing a water rescue? 1 soldier, 3 suspected militants killed in Indian Kashmir base camp attack
[DAWN] Suspected Death Eaters stormed a paramilitary base in Indian-administered Kashmire early Tuesday, police said, leaving one soldier and three attackers dead.

Three paramilitary troopers and a police officer were also injured as the trio of attackers hurled grenades and fired automatic weapons at the Border Security Force (BSF) base next to Srinagar airport before dawn, director general of police S. P. Vaid said.

"All the three Death Eaters have been killed. An assistant sub-inspector of BSF also died in the initial assault," Vaid told AFP.

Flight operations resumed at the high-security airport after being suspended briefly, with at least one in-bound flight from New Delhi cancelled, authorities said.

The base in which the shootout took place shares a common compound wall with the airport.

The camp houses a battalion of India's Border Security Force and only barbed wire separates it from the Srinagar airport, which is controlled and run by the Indian Air Force.

3rd Mass grave found in Hawija

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi paramilitary troops ran on Tuesday into another mass grave of security members executed by the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Kirkuk.

Popular Mobilization Forces’ media service said the forces discovered a third mass grave of executed security members in Abu Sakhra village in Abbassi, southwest of the group’s stronghold town of Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk.

“Mobilization forces are waiting for specialized teams to examine the martyr’s relics and identify them,” said the media outlet.

The PMFs had found two other mass graves of security victims on Monday in Abu Sakhra and al-Therban villages.

Iraqi government and PMF forces have discovered dozens of mass graves of security members and civilians executed by the Islamic State as they gradually regained control of areas occupied by the militants in 2014.

On Monday, the Joint Operations Command said government and PMF forces recaptured up to 45 villages during a second phase of operations launched last Friday to retake Hawija, a town southwest of Kirkuk which the militants have held since 2014.

ISIS decries treason in Hawija

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State members are accusing people at their Kirkuk stronghold town of Hawija of treason as security and paramilitary forces come closer to retaking the region.

A local source told Alsumaria News that some Arab leaders within the militant group delivered sermons through Hawija mosques accusing the local population of “treason”, “dishonoring a pledge of allegiance” and collaborating with the Iraqi army and the allied Popular Mobilization Forces.

The source said that was the first time the group makes such an accusation against locals in the southwestern Kirkuk bastion.

Also in Kirkuk, Jabbar al-Maamouri, a senior PMF leader, told Alsumaria News that Islamic State’s internal defense lines have begun to collapse after many militants had fled their deployments at rooftops and vital intersections in the town.

Israel to prevent Palestinian entry for 11 days due to Sukkot
[IsraelTimes] In a rare move, Israel announces it will be closing off the West Bank and Gazoo Strip for 11 days for the Sukkot festival and the following Shabbat, beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday.

Closures for Jewish and Israeli holidays are a routine procedure. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
in the past, Israel has shut down the crossings surrounding the West Bank and Gazoo only for the start and end of week-long festivals like Sukkot, rather than for the entire holiday.

The closure was approved by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman earlier this week, but its implementation was still dependent upon a final situational assessment.

French lawmakers adopt anti-terror bill 'at expense of' civil liberties
[Iran Press TV] The French parliament has overwhelmingly adopted a new controversial counterterrorism bill, which will boost police surveillance powers and make it easier to close religious centers, as the European country is under a nearly two-year-old state of emergency.

Legislators in La Belle France’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday approved the bill by 415 votes to 127, with 19 abstentions, two days after a suspected member of the ISIS Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
terrorist group stabbed to death two young women at a train station in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille.

The bill encountered little resistance from a nation traumatized by a string of terror attacks by ISIS in recent years. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
the French left and right groups strongly criticized the law, arguing it would lead to the infringement of civil freedoms.

"Lawmakers realize that today’s threat is serious and that we must protect ourselves against terrorists. This must be done in a way that balances security and freedom," Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told news hounds after the vote, adding, "This text will help protect French people."

He also described La Belle France as being "still in a state of war" as authorities struggle to eliminate the threat posed by foreign bully boyz and home-grown bully boys. Collomb called the anti-terror bill a "lasting response to a lasting threat."

Jobs, mostly. Putting all them people out of work is a bad thing.

What is really needed is a serious change in laws, corporations are not people, principals are held accountable for corporation actions and behaviors, regardless if those principals are involved or not.

Make sure that the principals are actually the people in charge, and not figureheads to shield the people in charge.

The issue is actually reminiscent of the key escrow debate back in the 90's. The withholding of info concerning their own breach would constitute 'bad faith' on the company's part in the contract process and be a basis for termination. From that point on, its the IRS as literally an 'independent' agency. They need to find 'independent' funding, but of course, Congress is just a useless ritual ceremonial process to keep the serfs mollified.

Iraq’s Kurds overwhelmingly backed independence in last week’s referendum, defying neighbouring countries including Turkey, which fear the vote could fuel Kurdish separatism within their own borders and lead to fresh conflict.

Qatar is being forced to sell more assets and make new arrangements to ensure sufficient liquidity to support its domestic market, leading the country’s sovereign fund to shift from being one of the largest foreign assets’ owner to a seller.

After Qatar cut its share in Credit Suisse Bank, Rosneft for oil and Tiffany for jewelry in the last few days, Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) plans to sell more of its assets worth over $320 bln, including shares in Glencore, Barclays Bank, according to Bloomberg.

Bankers and lawyers, who usually arrange the QIA acquisitions, are now proposing to sell some assets without waiting or expecting any significant investments for the QIA in the short term.

Bloomberg added that the QIA did not officially appoint financial advisers for the planned sales, but was considering which of them to be sold at the moment.

The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) was established in 2005 to use natural gas revenues, for which Qatar is considered the largest resource worldwide, helping local economy avoid fluctuations in oil markets, and diversifying its sources.

Catalonia's leader: Independence declaration within days
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Catalonia’s leader Carles Puigdemont told the BBC that the region will declare independence in a matter of days in response to Spain’s King Felipe VI speech on Tuesday night, as thousands erupted into the streets to protest against a violent police crackdown.

King Feipe accused Catalan secessionist leaders who staged a banned independence referendum of shattering democratic principles and dividing Catalan society.

He said that he was committed to the unity of Spain and added that the "irresponsible behavior" of the Catalan leaders had undermined social harmony in Catalonia. "Today Catalan society is fractured and in conflict," he said.

Puigdemont said that his government would "act at the end of this week or the beginning of next", in his interview with the BBC.

When asked by the BBC what Puigdemont would do if the Spanish government were to intervene and take control of Catalonia's government, he said it would be "an error which changes everything".

The regional leader opened the door to a unilateral declaration of independence from Spain on Sunday after voters defied a violent police crackdown and, according to regional officials, voted 90 percent in favor of breaking away.

Tens of thousands of Catalans demonstrated in the streets of the northeastern region against action by the police, who tried to disrupt Sunday’s vote by firing rubber bullets and charging into crowds with truncheons.

Tuesday’s protests shut down road traffic, public transport and businesses.

Doubling down on new foreign policy direction, Asif terms Narendra Modi a 'terrorist'
[DAWN] Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, in an interview on Monday, termed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "terrorist" and said the Indian government was being run by a "a terrorist party".

Asif made the remarks in an appearance on Geo TV's Capital Talk show in response to Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj's United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
General Assembly (UNGA) speech, in which she had accused Pakistain of "producing and exporting terrorism".

"Why is it today India is a recognised IT superpower in the world, and Pakistain is recognised only as the pre-eminent export factory for terror?" she had said at the assembly. "We produce scholars, doctors, engineers. What have you produced? You have produced terrorists," she had accused.

Asif, while talking about the many Kashmiris who have been killed in India-held Kashmire and touching upon civilian casualties in cross-border firing along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, recalled those allegations on Monday.

"A terrorist is their [India's] prime minister at this time: one whose hands are stained with the blood of the Moslems of Gujarat
...where rioting seems to be a traditional passtime...
," he countered. "A terrorist party is ruling them [India] ─ the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) is ruling them. The Bharatiya Jannata Party (BJP) is like its subsidiary organization," he said.

"But Narendra Modi," Hamid Mir, the show's host, reminded Asif, "is an elected 'terrorist'."

  • Ahmed Hanachi, 29, on Sunday killed murdered two cousins, 20, at Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles

  • Reports claim the Tunisian shouted 'Allahu Akbar' before stabbing the women

  • Officials say he had been arrested seven times since 2005, but had no convictions and used fake names

  • When killed, he had no identification, so had to be identified by his fingerprints

  • Hanachi had Italian residency and a valid Tunisian passport

  • Four people were arrested on Wednesday, and are being held on suspicion of being associated with a terror group

  • On Friday, Hanachi had been arrested and released after being caught shoplifting

  • The authorities do not routinely lock up illegal immigrants suspected of minor crimes
Marseille Terrorist Ahmed Hanachi Avoided Deportation Day Before Attack

[Breitbart] Hanachi's identity was confirmed by Tunisian authorities as one of their nationals Monday evening.

Paris prosecutor François Molins confirmed Hanachi was known for criminal acts in his home country and across North Africa and had been arrested a dozen times between 2005 and 2014 by French police in the areas of Marseille, Toulon, and Lyon, according to France 2.

Le Parisien revealed that the Tunisian had been detained ahead of a deportation order the day before the attack – after his most recent arrest for shoplifting – but was released because authorities were unable to reach the person responsible for signing detention orders at the Rhône prefecture and because there was, allegedly, not any room in the Lyon detention centre.

The French daily noted that only 30 per cent of illegal migrants who have passed through an administrative detention centre are ever deported, with Tunisians representing the third highest number of illegals expelled, according to 2015 figures.

Yemeni forces capture Houthi positions in Mokha
Jeddah – Yemeni popular resistance, backed by the fourth military region and Arab coalition, controlled Hamli area, one of insurgents’ most important military sites near Makha on the western coast.

The popular resistance succeeded in liberating the area following heavy clashes with Houthi and Saleh militias.

Meanwhile, Yemeni army advanced on several major axes in Tuhama region including Baqem which brought the army closer to Dahyan directorate, major city towards Saada, the hometown of Houthis’ leader.

Hodeidah Undersecretary Walid al-Qadimi stated that over the past few hours, military forces loyal to the legitimacy, army, and popular resistance, succeeded in controlling and advancing towards several areas, most importantly al-Hamli.

Hamli is one of insurgents’ most important barrack where they hide different weapons and missiles and use the area to launch their attacks against the army.

The undersecretary explained that Hamli area used to be a residential area, but insurgents turned it into a military area.

Qadimi confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that the army and popular resistance are advancing on major fronts especially Midi and Haradh. He added that the coalition air force targeted insurgents major sites in those areas.

He stated that during the army’s military operations, several insurgents were captured and will be put under investigation for further military details. Such information benefits the army in locating sites and weapons’ hidden by the insurgents all over Tuhama.

The undersecretary pointed out that the coalition forces are backing the army and popular resistance to restore legitimacy in the country. He reiterated that the efforts of coalition forces are very important and pivotal in restoring stability.

Qadimi said that insurgents had established new checkpoints especially on Nahm and Bani Hashish frontlines. He claimed that the checkpoints were to prevent their fighters from escaping the battlefield as the national army and resistance advance.

Turkey Detains 35 Istanbul Officials over Coup Links
[AnNahar] Ottoman Turkish police on Tuesday enjugged
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
35 local authority officials in Istanbul over alleged ties to last year's failed coup, just weeks after the city's long-serving mayor stepped down, state media reported.

Another 77 Istanbul officials also face arrest, with a total of 112 warrants issued for current or former employees of several district authorities, Anadolu news agency reported.

They are accused of links to US-based preacher Fethullah Gulen
... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world...
, whom Ankara blames for orchestrating the bloody coup, charges he fiercely rejects.

They allegedly used Bylock, a messaging app used by the July 15, 2016 putsch suspects.

They are accused of "membership in an armed terror group," Anadolu reported.

Separately, Ankara prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 142 people -- 121 of them from the education ministry, most of whom had been sacked, and 21 former employees of the sports ministry, Anadolu said.

The suspects are also accused of using Bylock, it added.

The arrests follow last month's resignation of Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbas, after 13 years in the key post.

Topbas, 72, did not give any reason for his resignation from the job which President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
himself held from 1994 to 1998.

The former mayor found himself in a tricky situation after the coup, with police briefly arresting his son-in-law, a businessman, for alleged links to Gulen.

Belgium withdraws residence permit of "Salafist" Saudi imam
[Ynet] Belgium took steps to expel a Saudi imam who preaches at the country's biggest mosque for spreading bully boy ideology, the immigration minister said on Tuesday.

The imam's residence permit was withdrawn as a prelude to expelling him. He had lodged an appeal against that decision which, if it failed, would oblige him to leave the country, Minister Theo Francken told radio station BelRTL.

Brussels' Grand Mosque, which was leased to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
for 99 years in the 1960s as part of an energy deal, has faced repeated accusations from local politicians of propagating ultra-conservative forms of Islam.
The Times of Israel adds:
Francken did not identify the imam but his office tells AFP his name is Abdelhadi Sewif, a man of Egyptian origin who has lived in Belgium for 13 years.

Belgian authorities first decided in March not to renew the imam’s residence permit but he has appealed against the decision and judges will review his case on October 24, an official says.

After the deadly Brussels bombings in March last year, the mosque defended itself against charges that it was preaching a puritanical strain of Islam and was even a hotbed of extremism.

ESPN Changes Course, Will Air National Anthem on Monday Night Football Due to Vegas Shooting
[BREITBART] After initially declaring it would no longer show the national anthem on Monday Night Football, ESPN has reversed course and decided that air the singing of the anthem. The network cites the shooting in Las Vegas, as the reason behind the move.

ESPN was set to follow in the footsteps of Fox Sports, which decided to go back to its previous habit of running commercials during the time the national anthem is played in the stadium at the start of each NFL game. However, after the shooting at Mandalay Bay, the network changed its mind:

#1  Fox and ESPN need to air the national anthem. To not do this is cowardice. It's one of the rare opportunities we have to come together to honor our country and what went and goes into it. Shine a light on the vermin who would disrespect it. They need to think about what this means because obviously they take it for granted.

Arrested Boko Haram Terrorist Had Planned To Strike In Ondo State
[SAHARAREPORTERS] Mohammad Bashir, a member of the Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
terrorist group who was nabbed in Ondo State on Saturday, revealed on Tuesday that he had planned to launch an attack in Ondo State before his arrest.

The suspect was locked away
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
by the Ondo State Police Command’s Anti-Crime Patrol Squad on Isua Road in AKoko South Local Government Area. While in police custody, Mr. Bashir confessed to being a member of Boko Haram.

Speaking with journalists at the Ondo State Police Command headquarters in Akure, Mr. Bashir provided details of the terrorist group’s operations. He revealed that certain wealthy northerners, particularly from Maiduguri and Nasarawa State, supplied Boko Haram with weapons.

The forty-year-old terrorist explained that he used to be a Fulani herdsman before he was forcefully conscripted into the terrorist sect in Nasarawa State in 2016.

After joining the group, Mr. Bashir killed two people, including a child. Both victims were killed in Nasarawa State.

"I only killed two people. The first person was a little child who I murdered inside the bush while the second one was an adult I killed by the roadside," Mr. Bashir said in the Hausa language.

According to him, there are many other turbans hiding from the military in local communities in the South-West.

"I ran into Ondo State from Nasarawa after the military launched a manhunt for us (Boko Haram) in the North. When I arrived in the state, I went straight to see my younger brother and decided to walk on the streets of the community.

"I had planned to strike but first wanted to eat by the roadside when I was arrested by the police patrol team and moved down to their station," he said

Mr. Bashir said there are other fleeing Boko Haram members hiding in various communities of Ondo State.

Low-caste man killed in India for watching dance performance
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A man from India’s lowest caste has been killed by a group of higher-caste men for attending a traditional Hindu dance performance, police said Monday.

Jayesh Solanki, 21, and his cousin Prakash were allegedly attacked late Sunday when they went to watch garba -- a folk dance performed during the nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri.

The alleged attack in the western state of Gujarat
...where rioting seems to be a traditional passtime...
is the latest incident of violence against Dalits, who lie at the bottom of India's deeply entrenched social hierarchy system.

"We have tossed in the slammer

eight persons for allegedly beating to death one Jayesh Solanki in Borsad town of the district," local police superintendent Anand Saurabh Singh told AFP.

Police said they had received a complaint from the victim's cousin Prakash, who said one of the men demanded to know why they were watching the dance performance.

Caste-based abuses
The accused "hurled caste-based abuses" before going away and returning with seven others who began beating the pair, police quoted Prakash as saying. The group first slapped Prakash and when Jayesh tried to stop the fight, he was shoved aside.

"They pushed him so hard that he banged his head on a wall and collapsed," the complaint added. Jayesh was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead, police said. The attackers said Dalits "do not have any right to watch garba", the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

First blizzard of winter in Montana, first snow road closure in CO
[Weather.com] The first blizzard of the season has resulted in widespread power outages and downed trees in parts of Montana. Treacherous travel conditions and additional power outages are possible through Tuesday, as this early-season snowstorm continues to sweep through the Rockies.

Unlike the snow the Rockies experienced in September, this storm is having a greater impact since valley locations are also being affected, in addition to typical mountain areas.

Interstate 70 was closed in Colorado between Vail and Copper Mountain for a time Monday morning due to accidents and vehicles sliding off the icy road. Shelters were opened to take in stranded travelers in the area.

[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
bully boyz suffered heavy casualties during the Arclight airstrikes and ground operations involving artillery strikes in northern Kunduz and Faryab provinces of Afghanistan.

The 209th Shaheen Corps of the Afghan National Army in the North said Monday that the operations were conducted in various parts of the two provinces in the past 24 hours.

The officials further added that the operations were conducted in Pul-e-Pak, Nasiryan, and Joi Begum villages of the district.

In the meantime, the Shaheen Corps officials said at least 17 murderous Moslems were killed and 13 others were maimed during the operations in Qaisar district of Faryab province.

The murderous Moslems were targeted in Chechakato, Gandab, and Kanjak areas of Qaisar, the officials added.

Khalifa Haftar: Libyan Army is launching legitimate war in Sabratha
[Libya Observer] Renegade Libyan General, Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, has declared that one of the warring groups in Sabratha is affiliated with his self-styled army, saying the ongoing fighting in the city is legitimate.

In a statement to Italia’s AKI news agency, Haftar revealed that the ISIS Fighting Operation Room is launching a legitimate war against the bully boyz and human smugglers and traffickers.

"The war will not stop until those groups hand over their weapons, release tossed in the calaboose
Please don't kill me!
people for blackmail and hand over imported muscle who are fighting with them". He said.

The power-obsessed General also denied social media claims of his meeting with Commander of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
Revolutionaries’ Brigade, Haitem Tajouri, in La Belle France, saying he rejects "the principle of sitting down with leaders of undisciplined groups".

Haftar’s statement refutes claims of the ISIS Fighting Operation Room that it’s acting under the Defense Ministry of Presidential Council.

The ISIS Fighting Operation Room is made up of former army officers. It’s backed by a Salafist militia group called "Wadi Brigade," which is controlled by followers of Madkhali sect and owes allegiance to Khalifa Haftar’s Dignity Operation.

Dignity Operation spokesperson, Ahmed al-Mismari, told Sky News Arabia TV on Sunday that the ISIS Fighting Operation Room and Wadi Salafist militia are their affiliates and they will continue the fighting until they eradicate the "terrorist groups" from Sabratha.

To add fuel to the fire, the High Fatwa Committee of the eastern government has called for Jihad in Sabratha against what it called the "Kharijites," a term Dignity Operation uses to describe its opponents.

The Awqaf Authority of the government, led by Abdullah al-Thanni, also ordered mosques in the eastern region to perform Qunut prayers to ask God to defeat the "Kharijites" in Sabratha.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
Chief of Staff of Presidential Council, Abdurrahman al-Taweel, ordered Monday the warring parties in Sabratha to stop the festivities and he tasked the head of intelligence office, military police chief, and Sabratha security department chief to supervise the ceasefire he ordered.

He added that any violations will render the party committing them as illegitimate.

Both Brigade 48 and the ISIS Fighting Operation Room said they will comply with the ceasefire orders, but the Wadi militia is rejecting it, accusing Brigade 48 of being a group of "terrorists".

Earlier, The Presidential Council in its capacity as Supreme Commander of Libyan Army ordered Chief of Western Military Zone, Osama Jawaili, to intervene and stops the fighting.

Daesh defense line collapses in Hawijah as Iraqi forces liberate more villages
[Iran Press TV] A high-ranking commander of the Iraqi pro-government Popular Mobilization Units says the defense lines of ISIS Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
murderous Moslems have collapsed in the northern town of Hawijah as army troops and their allied fighters have adanaced dozens of kilometers, seizing nearly three dozen villages from the terrorists.

Jabbar al-Mamouri told Arabic-language al-Sumaria television network on Tuesday that ISIS murderous Moslems can no longer put up stiff resistance in the face of advancing Iraqi soldiers and fighters from Popular Mobilization Units, better known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha’abi, as the terror group’s snipers stationed on rooftops and at vital intersections in the heart of Hawijah, located 45 kilometers west of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
have fled to save their lives.

Meanwhile,
...back at the saw mill, Scarface Al had tied Little Nell to the log and was about to turn on the buzz saw...
Secretary General of Iraq's Badr Organization Hadi al-Ameri said Iraqi army forces and Hashd al-Sha’abi fighters have retaken nearly 100 villages and hamlets ever since the operation to liberate Hawijah was launched late last month.

Ameri, in a blurb issued on Tuesday, announced that al-Rashad area and Heynas air base have been completely purged of ISIS Takfiris.

The commander of the Hawijah liberation operation, Lieutenant General Abdul AmirYarallah, also said members of the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), army units and Hashd al-Sha’abi brigades have freed 35 villages during the second part of the second phase of Hawijah liberation operation.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on September 29 announced the start of the second phase of an offensive to liberate Hawijah from the grip of ISIS Takfiris.

"We announce the start of the second phase of the liberation of Hawijah and all the surrounding areas to the west of Kirkuk, and as promised the sons of our country are continuing to liberate every inch of the land of Iraq and crush the gangs of the ISIS terrorist group," said Abadi in a statement.

The first phase of the operation to liberate Hawijah was launched on September 21.

Iraqi forces capture 2 more villages in Hawija

Hawija (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi paramilitary forces took over two more villages on Tuesday as operations continue to clear Islamic State havens in Kirkuk’s Hawija, their media reported.

The Popular Mobilization Forces’ media service said the troops recaptured two more villages in northeast Hawija, leaving deaths among the militants.

On Monday, the Joint Operations Command said government and PMF forces recaptured up to 45 villages during a second phase of operations launched last Friday to retake Hawija, a town southwest of Kirkuk which the militants have held since 2014.

US commander claims Pakistan's ISI agency linked to 'terrorist groups'
[Iran Press TV] A top US military official has accused Pakistain's main spy agency of having "connections" with groups involved in acts of terror across the region.

Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday that the Inter-Services Intelligence
...the Pak military intelligence agency that controls the military -- heads of ISI typically get promoted into the Chief of Army Staff position. It serves as a general command center for favored turban groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, tries to influence the politix of neighboring countries, and carries out a (usually) low-level war against India in Kashmir...
(ISI) directorate had maintained relations with "terrorist groups."

"It is clear to me that the ISI has connections with terrorist groups," media outlets quoted Dunford as saying.
US officials have long been frustrated with what they say is Pakistain's unwillingness to act against bully boy groups including the Afghan Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and the Haqqani network.

The Haqqani network, founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani
...founder and still titular head of the Haqqani Network. Jalaluddin is old and tough and very crafty, one of the few Pashtun warlords who was worth spit...
, is a bully boy group that operates on both the Pak and Afghan side of the border.

Successive US administrations have criticized Pakistain for links with the Taliban and for harboring slain al-Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now among the dear departed, though not among the dearest...
On August 21, US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, in a major speech outlining US policy on Afghanistan, denounced the Pak government for offering safe haven to "agents of chaos."

Pak officials bristle at what they say is lack of respect by Washington for the country's sacrifices in the war on militancy.

Chinese scientists make breakthrough in replacing WiFi with LiFi
[DAWN] Chinese scientists have made a breakthrough in creating full-color emissive carbon dots (F-CDs), which brings them one step closer to developing a faster wireless communication channel that could be available in just six years.

Light Fidelity, known as LiFi, uses visible light from LED bulbs to transfer data much faster than radio wave-based WiFi.

While most current research uses rare earth materials to provide the light for LiFi to transmit data, a team of Chinese scientists have created an alternative, F-CDs, a fluorescent carbon nanomaterial that proves to be safer and faster.

"Many researchers around the world are still working on this. We were the first to successfully create it using cost-effective raw materials such as urea with simple processing," said Qu Songnan, an associate researcher at Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which leads the research.

Qu said rare earth has a long lifespan which reduces the speed of LiFi transmission. However,
Switzerland makes more than cheese...
F-CDs enjoy the advantage of faster data transmission speeds.

In previous studies, carbon dots were limited to the emission of lights such as blue and green. The new nanomaterial that Qu's team has developed can emit all light visible to the human eye, which is a breakthrough in the field of fluorescent carbon nanomaterial.

Qu said this is significant for the development of LiFi, which he expects to enter the market in just six years.

A 2015 test by a Chinese government ministry showed that LiFi can reach speeds of 50 gigabytes per second, at which a movie download can be completed in just 0.3 seconds.

I think IBM started using multi-freq LED lasers @'94. Yes indeedy, optical is faster than RF. 'Speed-of-Light' and all that.

This is just poor spectrum management, unless it is strategically linked to other developments like printed mylar displays you can rollup and put in your pocket, or optical camo.

If you need Line-Of-Sight with light then just use a cable. The advantage of using RF is the signal going around corners and through things.

#9  OOOhh, Hellspawn.
As last I can recall radio frequencies fall to the left of the visible frequencies on the energy spectrum. Longer wavelength means more 'distance' between bandpass detection peaks (-1, 0, +1). Visible spectrum has shorter wavelengths so less distance from peak-to-peak. Less distance means more peak-to-peak detections means more data within the same interval of 'time', ergo faster within this context.
How'd I do?
Wait, let me look it up!

#10  Magpie, the trick with visual spectrum fluorescing bits is there needn't be a signal decoder in the display receiver. Remember WYSIWYG?

Southeast Asia
Rohingya militants in Bangladesh camps eager to fight
[DAWN] Bangladesh has deployed secret police in the burgeoning refugee camps near its border with Myanmar, where Rohingya claiming to be members of a bully boy group say they have found fertile ground for recruitment.

Authorities in Bangladesh, which was already grappling with its own militancy problem before the latest mass influx of Rohingya refugees, have repeatedly said there are no hard boyz among the new arrivals.

But inside the camps are a number of self-proclaimed members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), the group behind the August 25 attacks on police posts in Myanmar that sparked a military crackdown that the UN has likened to ethnic cleansing.

Capitalising on anger over the unrest that has forced half a million Rohingya Moslems to flee to squalid camps in Bangladesh, recruiters claim to have enlisted hundreds willing to fight back in Myanmar, where the minority faced decades of persecution.

Those allegations are hard to verify. But authorities in Bangladesh have stepped up surveillance of the border area in recent weeks.

Mohammad Halim, who says he is a recruiter for ARSA, told AFP that volunteers were trained in combat, military tactics and the use of weapons ‐ but he complained that they were unarmed.

"All that training seems to be vain, because we don't have weapons," Halim said in a steamy tent in Cox's Bazar, using a pseudonym to protect his identity.

"If we had arms, we'd go back to Myanmar to fight... we would drive away the military and take back our land," he told AFP.

Waiting for orders
The ARSA says it launched the August assault ‐ and a previous attack in October 2016 ‐ to fight back after decades of suffocating restrictions on Rohingya Moslems in Buddhist-dominated Myanmar, which denies them citizenship and free movement.

But the violence unleashed by the ARSA attacks has resulted in a massive exodus of the minority from their homes in Rakhine state.

ARSA, branded a terrorist organization in Myanmar, is fronted by Ata Ullah, who is believed to have been born to a Rohingya family in Pakistain, and to have lived in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
Rohingya leaders have long rejected attempts by outside murderous Moslems to radicalise the population.

But observers say increasingly oppressive restrictions imposed since communal violence between Moslems and Rakhine Buddhists in 2012 have allowed support for militancy to take root.

Security experts warn that radicalisation among the Rohingya would have far-reaching consequences, especially if global Death Eater groups tap ethnic rivalry in Myanmar's Rakhine state and anger in the refugee camps in Bangladesh.

Refugees fleeing the latest violence -‐ including sizeable Hindu and Buddhist minorities ‐ have alleged atrocities by all sides, including mass killings and rapes.

ARSA has effectively gone underground in recent weeks, said Jahangir Alam, a newly arrived refugee who claimed he took part in the bully boy ambush on security forces last October.

Rohingya fighters were told to await orders and weapons, Alam said, but some in the camps were eager to avenge the slaughter of friends and family.

Syrian regulars capture village in Hama
Hama (Syria News) local sources informed, on Tuesday, that Syrian army forces and allied militias, managed to recapture a village in the district of Uqayribat, in the eastern countryside of Hama, Qasioun News reported.

The sources revealed that the Syrian army forces, backed by Qalamon Shield militias recaptured Oksh Village in the district of Uqayribat, in the eastern countryside of Hama, after violent battles with the Islamic State militants.

The clashes were accompanied by mutual artillery and missiles shelling, leaving several casualties among the ranks of the terrorist group.

Meanwhile, Russian warplanes carried out air strikes on the Islamic State-held areas in the district, but no casualties were recorded.

It is noteworthy that the Islamic State group lost large areas of land in the district, after the assault conducted by the army forces in July 30, and resulted in imposing a siege over the district in August 16.

EXTREMELY Graphic Photo Emerges Appearing To Show Deceased Vegas Killer Stephen Paddock
I hesitate to post this, but...

The pic is most assuredly NSFW or those of weak constitution.

Vegas shooter's body is seen splayed on the floor of his hotel room next to his arsenal of assault rifles and ammunition in crime scene photos - as it's revealed he hid a camera in a room service cart so he knew when SWAT teams prepared to enter

[DailyMail]
  • New photos show Vegas shooter's dead body on the floor of his hotel room after he committed suicide

  • In the photo, Stephen Paddock wears a brown long-sleeved top, black slacks, loafers, and black gloves

  • Next to his body are two assault rifles with bi-pods; one has a 'bump stock', making it effectively full-auto

  • Dozens of spent shells litter the floor and in one corner magazines sit in neat stacks

  • A hammer is also seen, which Paddock presumably used to smash open two windows in his suite

  • An investigation is underway to find out who leaked the photographs

  • It was from both of those vantage points that Paddock fired on a crowd of 22,000 attending a music festival

  • He fired on the crowd for 9 minutes, killing at least 59 and injuring 527 - the deadliest attack in U.S. history

  • Video from outside the hotel room shows bullets piercing the front door, from when Paddock shot at cops

  • He set up a camera on a room service cart outside the room to warn him when police were arriving

  • By the time a SWAT team blew open the door to the suite, Paddock had shot himself dead

  • Investigators are struggling to find a reason for why the millionaire retiree carried out the massacre

  • He had no criminal record, and his brother says he wasn't religious or political

  • He did, however, like gambling and in the two weeks prior had carried out several large figure bets

  • In the week before he died, he also wired $100,000 to an account in his girlfriend's native Philippines

  • Girlfriend Marilou Danley is back to being a person of interest and is en route back to the U.S. for questioning

  • On Tuesday, Las Vegas authorities say they had identified all but three of the 59 victims

  • Paddock may have previously planned to attack another open-air music festival, held from September 22-24

  • He had attempted to book specific suites at the Ogden, a luxury condo tower that overlooked the festival, as well as a hotel with festival views, but moved on when he discovered they were booked
Update from the Daily Mail article at 1:00 p.m. ET:
In a Tuesday night press conference, Undersheriff Kevin McMahill defended police for taking 72 minutes to breach the room where Paddock was holed up after first shots were reported at 10:08pm on Sunday.

McMahill said that patrol officers who had been managing the music festival quickly entered the hotel and began working their way up to the 32nd floor, where Paddock was located, evacuating each floor as they went - but that police couldn't act until the SWAT team arrived.

He also said that Paddock's gunfire ceased at around 10:19pm - 59 minutes before his room was breached. At that point, he said, SWAT stopped regarding Paddock as an active shooter and treated him as a less urgent barricade situation, since he was isolated in the room.

McMahill didn't make it clear exactly when the SWAT team was in place, but said that at 10:38pm, a security guard approaching Paddock's room was non-fatally shot. The guard, who is still in hospital, sent 'digital information' to cops, McMahill said.

Details of that incident have not yet been released, but it seems likely that Paddock spotted the guard approaching using the cameras he installed in the door's peephole and in a room service cart he'd left in the hallway.

SWAT raided the room at 11:20pm - something the McMahill said was acceptable because Paddock was no longer shooting and was barricaded in. He said the SWAT team was 'unconventional,' being made up of SWAT members, patrol cops and a K-9 unit.

Elsewher it was revealed that Paddock was prescribed anti-anxiety medication Valium back in June, which has been linked to increased aggressive behavior in multiple studies.

Paddock was taking 10 milligram tablets at the time of the massacre, though it is not known why he was prescribed them or whether he had underlying behavioral issues.

Speaking at the same press conference, Jill Sneider of the ATF said that no less than 12 of the rifles found in the room had bump-stock modifications. In total, there were 23 firearms in the hotel room, including an AK-47, an AR-15-type gun, and a handgun.

But Paddock had still more guns stored in his two houses in Verdi, outside Reno, and Mesquite, bringing the total across all thee locations to 47, she said. They included rifles, shotguns and handguns bought from Nevada, Texas, Utah and California. All had been bought - legally - over the course of more than 20 years.
And from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a possible trigger for the attacks:
Diazepam
...the generic name for Valium...
is a sedative-hypnotic drug in the class of drugs known as benzodiazepines, which studies have shown can trigger aggressive behavior. Chronic use or abuse of sedatives such as diazepam can also trigger psychotic experiences, according to drugabuse.com.

“If somebody has an underlying aggression problem and you sedate them with that drug, they can become aggressive,” said Dr. Mel Pohl, chief medical officer of the Las Vegas Recovery Center. “It can disinhibit an underlying emotional state. … It is much like what happens when you give alcohol to some people … they become aggressive instead of going to sleep.”

Pohl, who spoke to the Review-Journal from the Netherlands, said the effects of the drug also can be magnified by alcohol.

A 2015 study published in World Psychiatry of 960 Finnish adults and teens convicted of homicide showed that their odds of killing were 45 percent higher during time periods when they were on benzodiazepines.

A year earlier, the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry published a study titled, “Benzodiazepine Use and Aggressive Behavior.” The authors wrote: “It appears that benzodiazepine use is moderately associated with subsequent aggressive behavior.”

#12  527 injured is a lot. Was this only from the shots or does this include injuries from the stampede to get away.

There may have been some double counting by the hospitals, AlanC. And also, I've noticed that all brought to the emergency room are counted as injured in such situations, even though most of the bruises and skinned knees are quickly cleaned up and sent home. Big numbers sell newspapers, and stiff uppper lips are so old school.
Posted by: trailing wife || 10/04/2017 12:42 Comments || Top||

#13  When they are talking casualties, all I have heard is the sum, so splits between those injured by stampede and those injured by shrapnel/fragments.

Considering the attendance and venue, I doubt there were any stampede deaths; injuries do occur such as getting ribs broken against a railing.

Getting hit by fragments doesn't mean your day didn't get sucky, it did, but I would put that in a different box than actually hit by a bullet.

I'd guess asphalt ZF; putting down carpet/astro turf creates tripping problems and clean-up problems, especially if the entire area isn't covered. Now, if there was a very controlled VIP in-front section, maybe so.

Pretty elaborate plan. As for the large bets, I'd guess this had been planned for a bit, especially if there was a scrubbed assault on the dates indicated, looks like a last night out deal like the 9/11 dudes hitting the titty bar for a couple brews.

I have never done a room service where I was asked how many were dining. Could be, an order large enough for two, which does not put it outside of last meal.

Firing from multiple positions is not a new thing, but outside the day to day Joe. Same with the cameras, as Tennessee noted that is not new but out of the usual for a day to day Joe.

A lot of ins and outs for a person with no background in this sort of thing to plan out of whole cloth.

The shooter was active for approximately 10 minutes. Let's say 1 of the 10 was devoted to non-shooting activities (Eject and reload and surveillance.) = 9 minutes = 540 seconds.

Casualties:
Dead (RIP): 58 (shooter doesn't get a tally)

#35  Skid, I start at about 1:20 in ideal situations, and the further rural to urban I get, I adjust down, adjust down again close to academic areas, again for entertainment venues, and down again depending upon that venue (example movie theatre showing military vs. kids or country vs. youth pop music). Middle age to older to younger.

Of those who respond, I start at about 9/10 being effective and drop again using above dynamics, say military town vs. academic town.

Now our little deal out here we got about 1:10 with a 100% effective. Compare to my deal in (university town), graduation weekend. Driver thought the best way to make a T-bone was to run a red light. I got out and immediately started traffic control. Did initial appraisal of Vehicle A, patient 2 in drivers side was banged up on the head. Had 3 aide-de-camps. First approached and I said, "Good day fine sir, thank you for your participation, looks like we will be working together, my name is x and I am volunteer fire in west Kansas, what is your name? Very good, your occupation?"

"Nurse at the local hospital."

Splendid I thought. Perhaps I am being a bit droll, but getting everyone calm and on the same page seemed a good idea."

"Excellent. Passenger has a head injury and is bleeding. Keep passenger in her seat until the paramedics arrive. They are coming, I hear the sirens."

Goes to check Vehicle 2. Occupants are dazed but functional. Tell them to hold tight, going to check on them (the priority patient, driver was shaken but functional considering). Look over and my nurse is helping patient out of the vehicle. Crap. Other two just standing about. Crap crap.

So, academic setting, somewhat urban environment, entertainment venue, youngsters. Out of say 40 I got three, one with credentials, and wasn't effective.

I look at this situation - youngsters having a good time in an urban environment. Did I mention the goopier it gets the less aides stick about?

I used to get mad watching replays at all the people standing about doing video, then realized they would just be standing around anyways.

Sherry is correct that the guy with the camera was an effective aide-de-camp, as was everyone else in the video. Except, maybe, the what I take as a police officer or security who was not taking in the situation and getting the fucking lights on. That happens too. I have seen good comrades-in-the-shit freeze especially in car wrecks. Whatever the background of our video producer is, my take is he has seen some shit, is well trained, and in good shape, young, as are all who are in the video.

What I am getting at, is there are people who do go towards the fire for whatever their reason. And you don't have to be frikkin Bones or some crap, just directing traffic or even simply bringing coffee and snacks.

#39  My point is, he was not interested in escape. Went through great lengths to get enough throw away weapons to not care, and his job with his car to hit more people.

He never planned to actually leave alive.
His job was carnage. Not accuracy, not methodology, not effectiveness. Merely a suicide mission.
And wanted to take everyone he could with little care.

It is sick,

#40  Re-phrase one part. He had an ex-fil plan which is why he wanted expendable hardware and planes. But did not care either way.

Suspect he saw LEO forming and cordoning off the hotel and knew he would not get far.

So Awesome are they.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
History will judge those who waste a chance at peace, Sisi tells Palestinian unity cabinet
And the senior Hamas and PA men had to sit there and look agreeable.
[AlAhram] History will hold responsible those who waste a chance at building peace, Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Tuesday, in a video address to the Paleostinian unity government, which is visiting Gazoo for the first time in three years.

The Gazoo visit is seen as a historic move towards reconciliation between rival Paleostinian groups Fatah and Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood,, the culmination of months of talks sponsored by the Egyptian government.

In his speech, El-Sisi called on the unity government to end the years-long division, while wishing them success in serving the Paleostinian people.

"Members of the national reconciliation government, Egypt has forever, despite the challenges, been a supporter of the Paleostinian cause. The cause has always been at the top of Egypt's priorities during meetings with world leaders or during international conventions," El-Sisi said.

"I have always known that there is an opportunity for peace in the region, on the condition of union between all parties," he said.

The Egytian president said the whole world was watching the efforts to acheive reconciliation between the Paleostinian people, and their persistence in overcoming previous obstacles to harmony and unity is valued.

"I have a full belief that the differences should be solved among Paleostinians with the support of your Arab brothers, rejecting interference from any foreign powers on the issue," El-Sisi said.

The Egyptian president added that no one benefits from divisions between the political factions, emphasising his confidence that Paleostinian leaders would appreciate the sensitivity of the current situation and the importance of converging to accomplish unity and move forward with the wishes of the Paleostinian people.

El-Sisi sent his intelligence chief to attend the meetings in Gazoo, as a message of Egypt's keenness to provide all the support necessary to finalise the reconciliation process.

In recent months, Egypt has been sponsoring talks for the resumption of Paleostinian national reconciliation efforts, while also pushing for a revival of Israel-Paleostine peace talks.

Abbas: 'No Palestinian statehood without Hamas reconciliation'

[Ynet] Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas gave an interview to an Egyptian television channel in anticipation of the arrival of the Palestinian government to Gaza for the purpose of applying its sovereignty over the Strip.

"There can be no Palestinian state without completing reconciliation and unity. The government has returned to Gaza to carry out its duties. We have ideological differences with Hamas, but we can't deny the fact they're a part of the Palestinian people," Abbas said.

"The day will come when we achieve an independent Palestinian state, but it won't be soon," he added.

Hamas leader rejects Israeli, PA demand to disarm

[IsraelTimes] Hamas says it won’t give up its vast weapons arsenal, putting it at odds with both the rival Fatah movement and Israel.

In a TV interview, Hamas’ supreme leader, Ismail Haniyeh, says his group, which has fought three wars with Israel, won’t give up its armed struggle against the Jewish state.

“As long as there is occupation on the ground, our people have the right to possess weapons and resist the occupation with all forms of resistance,” he tells the private On TV station.

In a gesture to PA President Mahmoud Abbas, he says Hamas will not go back to war against Israel unilaterally. “We are ready to negotiate with the Palestinian factions and Fatah on unifying the decision of peace and war,” he says.

Such concessions are unlikely to satisfy Abbas, who issued his own tough statement late Monday saying “everything must be in the hands of the Palestinian Authority.”

He said specifically he would not agree to reproduce the “Hezbollah model” of Lebanon, where the armed militant group acts freely under the watch of a weak central government.

Prime Minister Netanyahu said earlier today that his government will not accept a reconciliation deal between rival Palestinian factions that puts Israel at risk.

He said any deal must include recognizing Israel, disbanding Hamas’s military wing and cutting ties with Hamas’ patron Iran.

Europe
Paris: Police mystified after bomb found in plush neighbourhood
[TheLocal.fr] The Gay Paree prosecutor has opened an anti-terror investigation after the discovery of a homemade bomb at a building in a plush part of Gay Paree.

Police discovered two cylinders of gas in the hall of a building in the city's posh 16th arrondissement on the western edge of the capital and two others on the pavement.

They also found a mobile phone linked to the cylinders, which appeared to be "a device to ignite" the explosive, the sources said.

A resident alerted police after finding two of the gas cylinders around 4:30 am (0230 GMT) on Saturday in his building in the Porte d'Auteuil neighbourhood, a source close to the probe said.

Police then found the other two cylinders outside the building, believed to be on the quiet Rue Chanez, which runs parallel to Boulevard Exelmans and is a short walk from the Parc des Princes, where Gay Paree football team PSG play their home matches.

Reports said the improvised device had been soaked in petrol and was "operational".

According to another AFP source, five suspects were being held in jug Monday night. According to Le Point magazine the main suspect has links to the radical Islamist movement and was known to intelligence services.

It remains a mystery why the bomb was left outside the building on what is a quiet street in one of the French capital's plushest neighbourhoods.

According to French media, police have said there was no one living in the apartment block who might be considered a target for jihadists.

But one theory put forward by Le Figaro newspaper is that the bomb makers may have wanted to target an association that battles radical Islam but got the wrong address. This has not been confirmed by any official figure.

La Belle France's Interior Minister Gerard Collomb suggested the motivation may simply have been to create fear.

"Blowing up a building in a chic neighbourhood shows that no one is safe... it shows that it could happen anywhere in La Belle France," the minister told La Belle France Inter.
Terrorists gotta terrorize? It's certainly a theory. Breitbart adds:
Islamists previously undertook a large-scale apartment bombing campaign in Europe in 1999, according to the official version of events.

Whole buildings were levelled to the ground in the Russian cities of Buynaksk, Moscow, and Volgodonsk as a series of massive explosions ripped through residential blocks, leaving 293 were killed and over a thousand injured.

Chief suspect Achemez Gochiyayev remains unaccounted for.

If The NRA Is So Bad, When Will Democrats Return Their Donations?
[PacificPundit] In the last election cycle, Democrat house members Sanford Bishop (Georgia), Henry Cuellar (Texas), Collin Peterson (Minnesota) and Tim Walz of Minnesota all gladly accepted donations from the NRA during the 2016 election cycle. There’s also another previous house member who became senator of Illinois who’s been whining about the NRA. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois gladly took money during her 2016 election cycle, yet has not returned a dime of the money because the NRA is the big, bad group.

Link to Stats .

Clarification: This table lists candidates receiving money from this organization in 2015-2016. The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals may include subsidiaries and affiliates...
Distinction without difference.

#1  The lefts reaction to the NRA is informative.

In reality the NRA is a group that does what the 5 million members want them to do. The left however thinks it works the other way and the NRA simply duped 5 million followers to do their bidding. I figure they think this way because that is the way most liberal groups work, note the Democrat primaries with super-delegates and such to ensure the chosen are selected.

#2  I also enjoy the way the left believes that people turn from good gun-hating folks into 2nd amendment supporters because of NRA money rather than considering the NRA may find 2nd amendment supporters and give them money to win. I figure this is because most lefties don't actually believe in much and can change their beliefs for a price.

Libya’s Sharara oilfield still shut due to action by armed brigade
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Libya’s giant Sharara oilfield remained closed on Tuesday morning, two days after an armed brigade shut it down over salary claims and other demands, an engineer at the field said.

The National Oil Corporation (NOC) said on Monday it was working for a swift reopening of the field, which had been pumping more than 230,000 barrels per day (bpd) before it closed late on Sunday.

Chairman Mustafa Sanalla has said the NOC was trying to end the shutdown through a senior intermediary and had also launched legal action against the gang, which identified itself as Brigade 30.

The group published a statement saying it had shut the field to demand wages, the release of brigade members who were tossed into the calaboose, and fuel supplies, among other claims.

Oil facilities in Libya are generally controlled by local gangs, some of which have semi-official status as guards.

Sanalla said he did not know whether Brigade 30 were entitled to state salary payments as security employees, but made an appeal against the use of blockades, saying the NOC could not be blackmailed into paying out money.

Sharara, which has suffered from repeated shutdowns this year, had been producing 234,000 bpd before it closed. Sanalla said on Monday that output could rapidly recover if the field was quickly reopened, bringing national production back to around one million bpd.

A recent recovery in Libyan production had fueled speculation an OPEC-led drive to boost oil prices by cutting output might be losing traction. Libya has been exempt from the production cuts.

Libya’s NOC operates Sharara in partnership with oil companies Repsol, Total, OMV and Statoil.
