Oil Industry Deals Trudeau's Climate Agenda Crippling Blow After Court Nixes Pipeline
[Daily Caller] One of Canada's most economically powerful provinces is bailing on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's carbon tax scheme after a court nixed an oil pipeline that would have delivered crude to Asian markets.

Alberta's premier announced Thursday that the province is pulling out of Trudeau's climate change initiative to protest a court decision dinging the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline. Trudeau had previously approved the extension, but the three-judge panel ruled Canada did not consult with American Indians before making the move.

The province, located in western Canada, sits on the world's third-largest oil reserve and was preparing to use the pipeline to deliver crude to Asian markets. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley trashed the ruling during a press conference Thursday night.

"As important as climate action is to our province's future I have also always said that taking the next step, in signing on to the federal climate plan, can't happen without the Trans Mountain pipeline," Notley told reporters. "[U]ntil the federal government gets its act together, Alberta is pulling out of the federal climate plan."

Alberta's decision could seriously damage Trudeau's climate agenda. His government introduced a carbon tax in January to curb greenhouse gas emissions ‐ the tax was set to rise from $7.50 per ton in 2018 to $38 per ton in 2022. (RELATED: Canada's Trans Mountain Oil Pipeline Is On Thin Ice After Court Caves To Environmentalists)

Notley added: "Let's be clear, without Alberta that plan isn't worth the paper it's written on."

Canada agreed to purchase the pipeline for $4.5 billion. Thursday's ruling might undercut those plans, though, as Canadian taxpayers will be on the hook for funding a multi-billion-dollar acquisition of a worthless infrastructure proposal.

MS-13 Punk Who Can't Work A Machete Gets 18 Years
Seems to be the day for MS-13 related news, so here you go.
[Universal Hub] - A 'Somerville man' who led one of the local MS-13 "cliques" was sentenced to 212 months in federal prison today for RICO violations that included trying to slice up a member of a rival gang in Chelsea and helping to dispose of evidence related to the knife/gun murder of another alleged member of a rival gang on Falcon Street in East Boston.

The US Attorney's office in Boston reports that Jose "Little Crazy" Vasquez, 24, was a leader of the MS-13 Trece Locos Salvatrucha sub-gang.

According to the US Attorney's office:
On Sept. 8, 2014, Vasquez and another MS-13 member, Angel Pineda, a/k/a "Bravo," were involved in an attempted murder of a 16-year-old suspected gang rival. During the incident, which occurred on a public street in Chelsea in the middle of the afternoon, Pineda stabbed the victim multiple times. Vasquez, carrying a machete, also attempted to stab and kill the victim, but Vasquez’s machete got stuck in its sheath. The victim survived after receiving life-saving medical care.
The kicker?
Unlike most of the other MS-13 members, Vasquez is an American citizen - although he grew up in El Salvador.

Britain
UK Police to Treat Diversity Promotion Like ‘Critical Incident', Forces Set to ‘Embed Equality into All Activities'
[Breitbart London] Police will soon adopt a raft of "enhanced inclusivity" measures including celebrating "culturally-focused events like Black History Month" as forces across Britain are ordered to treat minority representation like a "critical incident".

According to Police Oracle, a plan set to be launched next week will see every force create a "gold group at chief officer level focused on diversity", with identity politics to be made a major priority.

Senior officers, staff associations, and members of various "communities" will work together towards meeting so-called diversity targets, the law enforcement news outlet said.

These will reportedly be set by local mayors, Police and Crime Commissioners, and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) ‐ the last of which was first tasked with transforming Britain’s "too white" police forces by then-Home Secretary Theresa May in 2015.

She also ordered the inspectorate to force "radical change" on Britain’s fire brigades, which she slammed for being "96 percent white and 95 percent male" and supposedly plagued by a "toxic" culture of "harassment".

Mark Levin: John McCain Funeral Coverage ‘Seems a Little Over the Top' (video)
[Breitbart] Conservative talker Mark Levin told listeners of his nationally syndicated radio show Thursday that media coverage of the late Sen. John McCain’s memorial services "has gone on a little too long," and "seems a little over the top."

Transcript is as follows:

And I say this with the deepest of sincerity – and I don’t want calls on this, by the way: Am I the only person in America who thinks the passing of McCain and the news coverage has gone on a little too long and it’s a little too much? Really, you can honor somebody, but this is going on day after day after day after day after day. And I don’t say this out of any animus whatsoever, period. Why do some public officials get this kind of treatment – Kennedy, McCain, so forth – and others get no treatment whatsoever. You’ve probably never even heard of them, probably weren’t on TV as much as say McCain or Lindsey Graham and so forth.

I caught about a minute of this at the local grocery store yesterday morning, and the speaker was going on and on and on about how wonderful McCain is, and that part was definitely over the top, almost nauseatingly so. MS-13 gang used California farm town as a base for crime
[ABC] More than two dozen MS-13 gang members and affiliates were arrested and charged following a monthslong murder and drug trafficking investigation centered on a rural California farm city that the gang turned into a base for its operations, U.S. and state prosecutors said Friday.

MS-13 took advantage of limited resources in the city of Mendota and used it and other areas of Fresno County to "conduct their crimes, to hide out from crimes that they committed in other jurisdictions and to prepare to commit crimes in states as far away as New York," Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp said at a news conference in Fresno with state and federal officials.

Mendota has a population of roughly 11,000 people and lies 35 miles (60 kilometers) west of Fresno in California's agriculturally rich Central Valley. Nearly the entire population is Hispanic, with many immigrants from El Salvador.

MS-13 is linked to more than 12 murders in Mendota and western Fresno County over the past two years, said McGregor Scott, the U.S. attorney in Sacramento. The federal charges announced Friday include allegations that two MS-13 gang members kidnapped and murdered a Fresno County man in December.

Scott said the investigation ‐ dubbed "Blue Inferno" ‐ uncovered evidence tying the gang to at least 30 murders and assaults in Mendota, Los Angles, Las Vegas, New York City and Houston. The evidence has prompted additional prosecutions in other cities, he said.

"This is a good day," he said. "An extremely violent street gang which has terrorized western Fresno County has been completely dismantled and several murders and violent crimes across the nation have been resolved in a resounding way," he said.

Economy
Business Booms for Louisiana Pipe Company Thanks to Trump Tariffs
[Breitbart] New Orleans, LA ‐ The owner of a Louisiana pipe company says business is booming thanks to President Trump’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

In an interview with the Monroe News Star, Jackie Rosenberg said his company Sol’s Pipe and Steel, which buys steel to make into pipes for domestic projects, has benefitted greatly from Trump’s 25 percent tariff on steel imports despite costs slightly rising.

Greg Hilburn with the Monroe News Star reports:

"America shouldn’t be in a position where it has to rely on foreign steel for its ships, tanks and skyscrapers," said Jackie Rosenberg. "It’s a strategic metal." [Emphasis added]

He has since had to buy steel at higher prices after exhausting his inventory, but he said a booming economy hasn’t reduced demand for his pipe or plates. [Emphasis added]

Rosenberg said steel prices have risen about 25 percent since the tariffs were put in place, but the more expensive material hasn’t dampened "a strong surge in our own business" in 2018, although he declined to provide specific revenue. [Emphasis added]

Sol’s Pipe and Steel employs about 100 workers at its Monroe, Louisiana plant. Rosenberg’s father, Sol Rosenberg who founded the pipe company, survived the Holocaust and was the only member of his Polish family to do so.

As Breitbart News has chronicled, Trump’s tariffs have been a boon to steel towns like Granite City, Illinois that were previously crushed by free trade. Likewise, Ashland, Kentucky, another small town that had its regional economy destroyed by free trade, will soon be getting a new aluminum mill that will employ 550 American workers.

Blackpool terror alert: Illuminations patrolled by ARMED cops after ISIS threat
[Star] As this evening’s world famous event attracts thousands, armed cops will be on alert following warnings of a seafront terror attack.

Daily Star Online exclusively revealed Brit seasides are a prime targets for ISIS terror nuts looking to commit copycat attacks using vans to plough into crowds.

Last year as it was revealed ISIS terrorists were seeking to replicate the horror of London-based attacks in the UK's provincial towns ‐ targeting large open promenades in a bid to "maximise casualities".

Jihadis may be seeking to attack Brits walking on seafronts - with Blackpool at the top of the list.

Now, cops have told Daily Star Online armed officers will be patrolling tonight’s event.

Broadway tenor and Blackpool native Alfie Boe is set to flick the famous switch, starting 66 nights of Illuminations.

Thousands of people will pack the promenade as the lights get switched on, with many more watching the concert at Tower Headland.

Ella Eyre, Jonas Blue, Diversity and DVJ, Rae Morris, HRVY, and Club MTV DJs R3Wire and Varksi will perform at the biggest party in Blackpool’s calendar.
Blackpool Tower is a tourist attraction in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, which was opened to the public on 14 May 1894. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, it is 518 feet tall and is the 120th tallest freestanding tower in the world. Wikipedia

Africa North
Morocco Targets Migrant Smuggling 'Mafia'

[AnNahar] Morocco has launched an operation against people-smuggling mafia and the migrants colonists they bring in from sub-Saharan Africa, a government source said Thursday.

Hundreds of African migrants colonists, who had hoped to make their way to Europe, have been picked up in the north of the country and placed in detention centers since the operation was launched last week, the source said.

"The aim is to take them out of the hands of the mafia gangs which have developed in the country," the source added, without giving precise figures.

The anti-migrant action was launched after hundreds of migrants colonists forced their way into the Spanish territory of Ceuta by violently storming a heavily fortified border fence with Morocco.

Ceuta along with Melilla, Spain's other tiny territory in North Africa, have the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's only land borders with Africa, drawing migrants colonists trying to reach the bloc.

A total of 4,382 migrants colonists have entered the two territories by land since the start of the year, according to the International Organization for Migration.

More than 32,000 migrants colonists have arrived in Spain by sea and land this year, making it the main entry point for migrants colonists arriving in Europe, after Italia and Greece.

The Moroccan authorities on Thursday held information meetings on their new anti-migrant operations for African and European ambassadors in the capital Rabat.

Iraq
Decade-old interrogation of Iraqi cleric shows Iran’s part in killing US troops
[IsraelTimes] Recently declassified testimony of Shiite militia leader Qais al-Khazali details Iranian efforts to stoke 2007 attacks that killed or maimed hundreds of Americans

Interrogations by US-led forces in Iraq of a top Shiite military and religious figure a decade ago are bringing to light the scale of Iran’s involvement in Iraqi Shiite militias’ attacks on US troops in the years following the American invasion.

Qais al-Khazali, who now heads the Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia that won 15 parliamentary seats in the country’s May elections, detailed the scale of Iranian involvement in the country in the 2007 interrogation, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday, citing recently declassified documents.

Khazali was under arrest at the time on suspicion of organizing an attempted kidnapping of US soldiers in the Iraqi city of Karala that left five Americans dead.

Khazali’s testimony from that period, declassified earlier this year by the US military’s Central Command, is especially damning.

Though he is now a critic of Iranian involvement in Iraqi affairs, a decade ago his statements to US interrogators depicted Iranian assistance as key to the ability at the time of Iraqi Shiite militias to carry out their ongoing campaigns of bombings and other attacks against US troops. The report also comes amid rising tensions between Tehran and the Trump administration after the latter’s withdrawal in May from the nuclear deal.

Khazali and his group are also now being considered by the US for designation as terrorist entities.

In one interrogation report cited by the Journal, from June 18, 2007, Khazali said his militia was among those that received training from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah in military bases near Tehran.

"There are Iranians and Lebanese Hezbollah conducting the training at these bases," the report was quoted as saying, citing Khazali’s comments in the interrogation.

"The Iranians are experts in full scale warfare while the Lebanese are experts in urban or guerrilla warfare," it added.

Some of the ordinance key to the campaign against US troops, including explosively formed penetrators that killed and injured hundreds of Americans, were delivered by Iran, he claimed.

As the report says, "Detainee said that anyone can receive EFP training and Iran does not care who gets it. This is because of the availability and low cost of EFPs."

Even the attack at Karbala that led to his capture was planned by Iran, he said.

He also detailed how he traveled personally to Iran to raise funds and support for his militia, and met with Iranian officials including top IRGC general Qassem Suleimani
.

The US-led coalition released Khazali to Iraqi officials in 2009 after he promised to lay down his arms. US forces left Iraq in 2011.

Khazali’s group angrily denied the claims in the interrogation reports, with Qassim al-Darraji, a member of its political bureau, telling the Journal, "It seems that the US is leading a campaign against Asaib Ahl al-Haq and its leader Sheikh Qais al-Khazali because he strongly rejected foreign interference in Iraqi affairs."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
July saw rise in terror attacks on Israelis vs. June, but down since May — Shin Bet
[IsraelTimes] Security agency tallies 255 attacks during month, including shooting death of soldier on Gazoo border and deadly stabbing in West Bank

The number of terrorist attacks targeting Israelis in July increased by 15 percent over the previous month.

Israeli security services documented 255 attacks last month, including 11 in Jerusalem, the Shin Bet said in its monthly report published this week. The June tally was 220 incidents.

Two Israelis were killed in attacks in July, including a soldier rubbed out by a sniper from Gazoo. The other fatality was a civilian who was stabbed to death in the West Bank, along with two other victims who sustained moderate to mild injuries.

Despite the increase, the figures in July were well below those of May, when 365 incidents were documented ‐ the highest number in over two years of terrorist attacks on Israelis.

Nearly two-thirds of the attacks recorded in July involved Molotov cocktails. Incidents involving the hurling of rocks at Israelis and their cars are not included in Shin Bet reports.

Federal Judge sez Obama-era DACA program likely illegal, but refuses to halt program
[Wash Times] A federal judge ruled Friday that the DACA deportation amnesty was probably illegal when President Obama created it in 2012 ‐ but he refused to halt the program altogether, leaving it to other courts to sort out a major legal mess.

Judge Andrew S. Hanen’s ruling clashes with those of several other federal courts which said President Trump’s attempt last year to phase out the DACA program was also illegal.

Taken on face, the rulings mean that the program is illegal ‐ but so is the effort to erase it from the books.

The issues are likely to speed through the circuit courts and quickly reach the Supreme Court, perhaps during its upcoming session.

But for now it leaves the program mostly intact, with current DACA recipients able to renew their work permits and two-year stays of deportation, though no new illegal immigrants are able to apply.

Judge Hanen said Mr. Obama exceeded his powers when he created the program, granting a broad amnesty from deportation to an entire class of people ‐ in this case so-called "Dreamers," who are young adults who came to the U.S. as juveniles, often without any say in the decision.

Judge Hanen said while the idea of aiding Dreamers may be right, Congress must act.

"DACA is a popular program and one that Congress should consider saving. Unfortunately, the judiciary is not the branch of government designed to salvage a program that should have emanated from Congress."

The Obama administration had portrayed DACA as guidance to immigration officials on how to prioritize deportations. It said Dreamers were such a low priority that they couldn’t be deported ‐ and further, said they should be given work permits, helping them enmesh themselves in American society. The policy was known as deferred action.

More than 800,000 Dreamers have taken advantage of the program since it first went into effect six years ago, using the work permits to earn driver’s licenses, claim Social Security numbers and gain eligibility for some taxpayer benefits.

From the start it was controversial. Mr. Obama himself had repeatedly said he lacked the authority to grant such a broad carve-out from deportation. His election-season reversal went largely unchallenged in the courts until last year, when Texas led a lawsuit arguing DACA was illegal.

The Trump administration, having already signaled its desire to cancel the program, sided with Texas ‐ leaving Democratic-led state and immigrant-rights groups to mount a legal defense.

Judge Hanen, in his decision, said he was bound by precedent in a 2015 case that struck down a similar but broader Obama-era amnesty, known as DAPA, which would have applied to perhaps 4 million illegal immigrant parents with U.S. citizen or legal immigrant children, and would have expanded the 2012 DACA program, too.

In that case, which Judge Hanen also had a part in, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that such broad attempts to create immigration policy through deferred action violated the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Judge Hanen said there is little practical difference between operations of DACA and DAPA, so if the latter was illegal, the former is likely illegal as well.

The judge said neither DACA’s apparent popularity with the public nor the sympathy arisen by the plight of Dreamers can overcome the clear language of the INA.

'Shape up or we'll quit,' Trump tells WTO
[DAWN] President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
has threatened to pull the United States out of the World Trade Organisation if it does not "shape up".

His remarks, made in an interview with Bloomberg News on Thursday, were the latest in a series of attacks on institutions of the global order that the US helped to build after World War II.

"If they don't shape up, I would withdraw from the WTO," Trump told the news agency, describing the agreement to set the organization up as "the single worst trade deal ever made".

Trump, who has previously criticized the WTO's dispute settlement system as being unfavorable to the US, said Washington had "rarely won a lawsuit" there although things began changing last year.

"In the last year, we're starting to win a lot," he said. "You know why? Because they know if we don't, I'm out of there."

China, which is currently embroiled in a trade war with the US, joined the WTO in 2001 ‐ a move which US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has described as a mistake.

Trump made the threat as Washington presses challenges at the WTO against trading partners that have fought back against tariffs on importers that were imposed by the Trump administration.

Pakistan backs Iran over US nuclear deal row
[DAWN] As Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
on Friday vowed to further strengthen Pakistain-Iran ties, the government expressed unequivocal support for Iran’s position on its troubled nuclear deal with the West that has been abandoned by the United States and urged the other parties to the agreement to remain committed to it.

Talking to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, who is the first foreign leader to visit Pakistain after the assumption of office by the PTI-led coalition government, PM Khan recalled the "inseparable bonds" connecting Pakistain and Iran together and said that during his government he would make all efforts "to cement these relations in various areas to the benefit of both countries".

Emphasising the importance of Pakistain and Iran in the region, PM Khan said the two countries "remained the key to growth and prosperity in the region through enhancing connectivity and promoting people to people linkages".

Palestinians clash with IDF on Gaza border; 180 said wounded
[IsraelTimes] Protests come amid reports Israel is in advanced talks with Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",, via UN and Egyptian mediation, for a long-term truce; hand-grenade said thrown at IDF troops.

Some 5,000 Paleostinians protested Friday along the border between the Gazoo Strip and Israel, with some 180 maimed, according to Paleostinian reports.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gazoo said some 180 demonstrators were maimed in festivities with IDF troops, including several who were hit by live fire.
Almost all, however, were briefly annoyed by tear gas, stubbed toes, and ndearly invisible splinters.
Among the maimed were a ten-year-old boy and a female paramedic, identified as Horouq Abu Masamah, the ministry said.

The IDF had no immediate comment.

The Ynet news site said that a hand-grenade was thrown at IDF troops and that Paleostinians also managed to down an IDF drone used to disperse tear gas on the protesters. There were no IDF injuries, Ynet said.

One incendiary balloon sent over the border from the Strip caused a fire near Kibbutz Be’eri. Fire fighters extinguished it before it could spread.

The festivities came despite reports that Israel is in advanced indirect talks with Hamas, via UN and Egyptian mediation, for a long-term truce in the Strip.

At least 171 Gazooks have been killed by Israeli fire since the start of the festivities, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. An Israeli soldier was shot to death by a Paleostinian sniper. Hamas has acknowledged that dozens of the Paleostinian fatalities were members of terror groups.

Ynet has some photos and video.

Dutch police shoot suspect after he stabs two people at an Amsterdam train station
[DAWN] Police in the Dutch capital shot and maimed a suspect Friday following a stabbing at Amsterdam's busy central railway station.

Amsterdam police said in a series of tweets that two people were maimed in the stabbing and the suspect was then shot by officers. All three people were taken to a hospital.

Police said the motive for the stabbing was under investigation and "all possible scenarios are being kept open." Police said that two platforms were closed to train traffic, but the station wasn't evacuated.

Trams to and from the square in front of the station were stopped as police and emergency services converged on the area. Red and white police tape kept members of the public away from the scene.

Central Station is a busy entry and exit point for visitors to the Dutch capital, with regular trains linking it to the city's Schiphol Airport.

Friday is one of the busiest days of the week, with many tourists arriving for the weekend.

According to the "Dublin rules" asylum seekers whose applications are supposed to processed in another EU country have to deported to that country with 6 months. If that doesn't happen the responsibility shifts.

There's no real need to go into these details actually. We're dealing with legal Calvinball.

The rules are made up or ignored as necessary. Apparently the goal is flooding Europe with hostile military age males from the Islamic world.

More Than 20 MS-13 Gang Members Arrested in California
[Daily Caller] Over 20 MS-13 gang members were arrested in California on Friday as a result of a months long multi-agency investigation. Older indictments that also stemmed from this investigation were released as well.

The charges covered a broad range and included:

- assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering
- conspiracy to distribute
- possession with intent to distribute
murder
- kidnapping

21 people were charged with federal crimes and six were charged with breaking state laws.

Two MS-13 members were charged with kidnapping and murder back in January. Others face charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and drug conspiracy among a long list.

Sixteen people were charged for drug trafficking. The release said, "these defendants allegedly obtained, sold, and profited from street level drug dealing, and used the proceeds to further MS-13’s criminal objectives."

Specific jail cells belonging to suspected gang members were searched as well. Phones, drugs and weapons were confiscated.

"MS-13 is a brutal transnational criminal organization that has wreaked havoc in communities across the United States," said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski in a DOJ press release. "The gang engages in indiscriminate and senseless acts of violence, as demonstrated by the charges announced today, which allege murder, attempted murder, and drug trafficking in the State of California. Dismantling MS-13 and other violent gangs that terrorize our streets will remain a top priority of the Department of Justice.

The president has taken a hard stance against the violent El Salvadorian gang.

FBI Arrests 5 'Extremist Muslim' New Mexico compound residents on weapons and conspiracy charges
[NM State - KRWG] ALBUQUERQUE ‐ The FBI has arrested five residents of a compound in Amalia, in Taos County, N.M. (Amalia Compound), on a federal criminal complaint charging them with violating the federal firearms and conspiracy laws. The arrests were announced by U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson and Special Agent in Charge James C. Langenberg of the FBI’s Albuquerque Division.

The defendants, Jany Leveille, 35, a Haitian national illegally present in the United States, Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, 40, Hujrah Wahhaj, 37, Subhanah Wahhaj, 35, and Lucas Morton, 40, are charged in a criminal complaint that was filed earlier today in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. The criminal complaint charges Jany Leveille with being an alien unlawfully in possession of firearms and ammunition in the District of New Mexico from Nov. 2017 through Aug. 2018. The criminal complaint charges the other four defendants with aiding and abetting Leveille in committing the offense, and with conspiring with Leveille to commit the offense.

According to the criminal complaint, on Aug. 3, 2018, law enforcement officers of the Taos County Sheriff’s Office executed search warrants at the Amalia Compound, where the five defendants were residing, and allegedly seized at least eleven firearms and a large quantity of ammunition. The complaint alleges that the firearms were transported from Georgia and/or Alabama to New Mexico in Leveille’s vehicle.

The FBI arrested the defendants without incident in Taos, N.M., this afternoon with the assistance of the Taos County Sheriff’s Office. The defendants will make their initial appearances in federal court in Albuquerque on September 4, 2018.

The Week in Guns, A Passage
Because of life changes and changes in technology, after five years I am shutting down the weekly This Week in Guns.

It was a passage for me mostly because of how much I learned with respect to guns, and how far I was able to take this as far as I did. It was a passage for Trailing Wife as well, who I hold in great esteem and gratitude for her editing and her insistence on excellence in the English language.

What I did learn through all of this is that AR-15 and AR-10 prices are as low as they have ever been, and our local homegrown fascists continue to press for taking guns away, from all citizens, law abiding or not.

In a just world, their corpses would be rotting away from swinging from lamp posts all over America for their attempts.

None of this would be possible without Fred and his platform. A discussion ensued about how some of the mods found Rantburg back in the day. I said I stumbled in one day, or maybe staggered in.

The truth is I found a link to Rantburg via Emperor Misha I.

I hope in some way I have changed views on the subject of guns and the right to keep and bear arms, and that it somehow will spread.

Russia says its submitted ‘proof’ of planned chemical attack in Idlib
[ALMASDARNEWS] Moscow is calling on the international community to realize its responsibility to prevent regular provocations with chemical weapons in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"I would still not talk about the risk of using chemical weapons, but about the risk of provocations using chemical weapons in order to blame the Syrian government afterward, because such a provocation is being prepared, there is no doubt. Both in the UN and in The Hague, where the headquarters of the OPCW is located, we submitted concrete facts that were obtained from different sources," Lavrov said.

The minister also called on the international community to realize its responsibility for preventing regular provocation with chemical weapons in Syria.

"It is necessary to make efforts so that the international organizations feel their responsibility for the provocations being planned [in Syria] and speak up against such attempts," Lavrov stressed.

The Russian Foreign Minister stated that Syria had every right to chase "terrorists" out of the rebel-held Syrian enclave of Idlib, emphasizing that talks were ongoing to set up humanitarian corridors there.

"In this area, in this de-escalation zone, there must be a separation of the armed opposition, ready for dialogue with the government, from hard boyz of Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
[banned in Russia] and other organizations recognized as terrorist by the UN Security Council. Terrorists oppose such separation," Lavrov said.

He said hard boyz "are trying financially and by other means, including through intimidation, not to let the gangs that do not make part of Jabhat al-Nusra... leave the area and even force them to cooperate with them."

Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross Wins Again as Canned Soup and Beer Prices Fall in July
[Breitbart] Consumers are not paying more for canned foods despite the 10 percent tariff on aluminum that went into effect this year.

The price of canned ham declined in July compared with a year earlier, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released Thursday. The price of canned fruit fell in July compared with June, and is now down 1.4 percent compared with a year ago. Canned vegetable prices also fell in July. Compared with the prior year, canned vegetables are up 1.4 percent, well below the 2.3 percent rise in prices overall.

Soup prices fell 0.3 percent, bringing prices a full one percent lower than they were a year ago. The price moves vindicate the claims made by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross defending the tariffs. Ross said in March that the tariffs would have little to no effect on U.S. consumers. He held up a can of Campbell’s soup to illustrate his point.

It’s not just canned food and soup that have defied expectations for price hikes. Automobile prices have barely budged despite the 25 percent steel tariff. New car prices are up just 0.4 percent compared with a year ago. Prices for new trucks were unchanged altogether. Motor vehicle parts were up just 0.1 percent.

Beer prices, which were predicted to rise because of aluminum tariffs, fell in July compared with the previous month. Compared with a year ago, beer prices are up just 1.4 percent. Wine prices, which were not thought to be under pressure from tariffs, rose 1.3 percent.

Myanmar military releases 75 child soldiers from service
[Bangkok Post] Myanmar's armed forces released 75 children and young people from military service on Friday, the United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
said, amid International outrage over alleged abuses committed by troops in the country's numerous ongoing conflicts.

Myanmar has now discharged 924 underage recruits since signing up to a joint action plan on child soldiers with UN agencies in June 2012, said Knut Ostby, the UN resident humanitarian coordinator for Myanmar, and June Kunugi, representative of the UN's children's fund, Unicef, in a joint statement.

The discharge was "one more positive development in the government’s effort to end and prevent the recruitment and use of children within the Tatmadaw," they said.

Both the military - known as the Tatmadaw - and the ethnic guerrilla groups it has been fighting for decades have been blacklisted by the UN for using child soldiers. The United States took Myanmar off its list of the worst offenders in the use of child soldiers in 2017, before reinstating it this year.

The Tatmadaw and seven other groups remained "'persistent perpetrators' in the recruitment and use of children in Myanmar," the UN said.

Spokespeople for the Myanmar military and the government were not immediately available for comment.

Myanmar's military was condemned internationally for human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
abuses including the recruitment of child soldiers during half a century of military rule.

Allegations of abuses have continued to be levelled against Myanmar soldiers despite a transition from full military rule that saw Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi assume control over the civilian administration in 2016.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Georgia Girl Finds Out She Is Being Adopted
[Breitbart] The moment Ivey Zezulka discovered that she and her siblings would be adopted was documented in a simple, touching video.

"I’m going to be adopted!" Ivey read aloud from the framed note inside the gift box. "We love you, sweetie. We’ll always be your parents," her new father said. "We get to take care of you, protect you and Kai and Lita, too," her mother added. Paige also had a message, not only to those who saw the video, but for potential parents who might worry about adopting an older child:

Ivey is so wonderful and special, and we are so blessed she is our daughter. Sometimes people are afraid to consider older kids, they think they may be ’damaged.’ We hit the jackpot. Ivey is so grateful and thankful. [She] tells us we are wonderful parents, and she has gratitude to be in a family, for being safe and loved. She’s wonderful and we are so blessed she is our daughter.

Ivey, 10, and siblings Kai, 3, and Lita, 2, have spent years in the foster system. But current foster parents Paige and Daniel ended that long journey, offering the children a home. "She’s been living with a question mark of what will happen," Paige told ABC’s Good Morning America. "We love her birth family and she loves them too, but it became [that] with us was where she wanted to be."

Europe
Rise of extreme nationalist groups in Germany brings a return of anti-Semitic acts
Salz bitte, much salz
Viel Salz, bestimmt. Open Joo hatred has been rising for years acrsoss Europe and Britain, as much a transferral of leftwing hatred of faraway Israel and Moslem colonists’ dhimmi-despite as traditional rightwing antisemitism. But that the Progressive news media haven’t noticed is par for the course.
[CBS] BERLIN ‐ The world watched with alarm this week as far-right protesters in Germany went chasing after immigrants amid word that refugees from Iraq and Syria were suspected in a knife attack that killed a local man. The rise of extreme nationalist groups in Germany has also brought a return of anti-Semitic acts.

Video showing a teenager in Berlin whipping a man wearing a yarmulke and shouting "Jew" in Arabic shocked many Germans this spring. The response was quick, with people of different faiths donning yarmulkes in solidarity.

German police received more than 400 reports of anti-Semitic attacks in the first half of this year, which is 10 percent more than the same period last year.

"It happens everywhere in Germany," said Wenzel Michalski.

He and his wife Gemma said their son was bullied by kids at school because he's Jewish.

"Three-and-a-half months of really terrible, anti-Semitic abuse, both verbal and physical," Gemma Michalski said.

Their son agreed to an interview, only if CBS News hid his face and altered his voice. He said they pushed and kicked him, and shot at him.

"It was a fake gun, but it was very realistic, and he was really, really frightened," Gemma Michalski said.

ANTI-SEMITIC INCIDENTS SPIKE 57 PERCENT IN 2017, REPORT SAYS
To tackle the reported rise in attacks, Germany has appointed its first anti-Semitism commissioner, Felix Klein.

"In spite of all our efforts, anti-Semitism is still existing," he said.

Those efforts include building a Holocaust memorial in Berlin. But while statistics show the far-right carries out nearly 90 percent of assaults on Jews, Klein said Muslim refugees, like the teenager caught on camera, are increasingly behind anti-Semitic attacks. Since 2015, Germany has taken in hundreds of thousands of them.

"These people who were raised in countries where hatred toward Israel and towards Jews is very common," Klein said.

The Michalskis believe Germany should do more to teach all kids about the dangers of discrimination.

"There's a new generation growing up, and becoming adult, who are racist and anti-Semitic and you could stop it," Wenzel Michalski said.

To do that, they said Germany has to stop burying its past under monuments, and build a future of tolerance.

American Bar Association Gives Kavanaugh Unanimous ‘Well-Qualified' Rating
[NR] The American Bar Association on Friday awarded Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh its highest rating, giving the judge a unanimous "well-qualified" score.

"The rating of ’Well Qualified’ is reserved for those found to merit the Committee’s strongest affirmative endorsement," the ABA states in its description of the ranking process.

Kavanaugh, President Trump’s pick to replace retiring justice Anthony Kennedy, will launch into what is expected to be a contentious four-day confirmation process before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. Senate Democrats have threatened to tank his nomination, and have requested millions of pages of documents from his tenure as staff secretary to President George W. Bush.

Of particular concern to his Democratic critics are his apparent view that a sitting president cannot be indicted and his views on health care and abortion. Abortion-rights advocates are worried the D.C. Circuit Court judge would vote to overturn the landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade if it were relitigated.

Iraq
Iran gives Iraqi Shiite militias ballistic missiles: report
[Rudaw] In its ever-growing quest to establish regional influence, Iran reportedly has given ballistic missiles to Shiite groups in Iraq.

Rooters reported on Friday that according to three Iranian officials, two Iraqi intelligence sources and two Western intelligence sources, Iran has transferred short-range ballistic missiles to Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq over the last few months. Five of the officials said it was helping those groups to start making their own.

Iran has long financed several Shiite armed militias in Iraq, including Qais al-Khazali's Asaib Ahl al-Haq, which is close to Kataib Hezbollah. Khazali's forces fought with the Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitary during the ISIS conflict.

Tehran also came to the Kurdistan Region's aid with light weapons at the start of the ISIS conflict. Sources told Rooters there was a missile factory being developed in the Kurdistan Region, as well as in al-Zafaraniya (near Baghdad), and Jurf al-Sakhar (near Karbala). The interior ministries in Baghdad and Erbil were not available for comment on Friday.

Western policy makers have expressed concern over a "Shiite crescent," stretching from Tehran to Baghdad to Damascus to the Golan Heights. Since the United States pulled out of the nuclear deal in May, European and other cosigners have worked to keep the deal in place.

Proxy conflicts in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
and Syria have brought the US and Iranian militaries ever closer.

"The logic was to have a backup plan if Iran was attacked," one senior Iranian official told Rooters. "The number of missiles is not high, just a couple of dozen, but it can be increased if necessary."

Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani
is responsible for the program, three sources told Rooters.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi dismissed the country's National Security Advisor Falih Alfayyadh on Thursday for "partisanship." Alfayyadh was the head of the Hashd al-Shaabi commission.

On Friday, a small splinter group of Abadi list, calling themselves the main Nasr leadership, announced they were nominating Alfayyadh to the post of prime minister.

Britannia's Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt is in Tehran for talks on Syria, Yemen, and the nuclear deal on Friday.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian warned on Thursday that Iran "cannot avoid" talks on tough issues like its ballistic missile program and regional influence.

"But Iran cannot avoid discussions, negotiations on three other major subjects that worry us ‐ the future of Iran's nuclear commitments after 2025, the ballistic question and the fact there is a sort of ballistic proliferation on the part of Iran... and the role Iran plays to stabilize the whole region," he said, according to AFP

Washington is open to negotiations with Iran, but says it will not renegotiate the nuclear deal.

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis told Pentagon news hounds on Tuesday that Iran has "less willingness to be confrontational" but "continue to be the single biggest destabilizing element in the Middle East."

"Iran has been put on notice that the continued mischief they've caused around the area, the murder that they have caused, the support from Syria, and what they're doing with Assad... that this is not tolerated by us, and they're going to be held to account for it," he added.

Iran maintains its missile program is for defensive purposes.

"We have bases like that in many places and Iraq is one of them. If America attacks us, our friends will attack America’s interests and its allies in the region," said a veteran IRGC commander, Rooters has reported.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Idlib rebels blow up bridges to hamper expected assault: monitor
[Rudaw] Rebels from Idlib have blown up two key bridges in a bid to hamper an expected government assault on Syria's only remaining rebel-held province, a monitor said on Friday.

The bridges over the Orontes River linked areas of neighbouring Hama province under government control to rebel-held territory in Idlib, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

They were blown up by Islamist factions from the National Liberation Front (NLF), the main non-jihadist alliance in Idlib, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

"They were the two main bridges in the area, but there are others," he told AFP.

The bridges were located in the al-Ghab plain, which straddles Hama and Idlib provinces and could be one of the first targets of any government offensive.

Government forces have been massing around Idlib province for weeks, particularly in al-Ghab which was once a key farming area.

"The rebels have seen the intense activity on the regime side, with the arrival of tanks and armoured vehicles," Abdel Rahman said.

"Rebel groups are reinforcing their positions in anticipation of a military operation."

In recent days, both the government and its ally Russia have stepped up their rhetoric against the rebel presence in Idlib, which is dominated by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
(HTS) jihadist alliance formed by al-Qaeda's former Syrian branch, al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
Front.

"The Syrian command has taken a decision to defeat al-Nusra Front in Idlib no matter the sacrifices that it would entail," Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on the West not to stand in the way of an "anti-terror operation" in Idlib, saying: "This abscess needs to be liquidated."

Ottoman Turkish troops are also stationed in the area and Ankara -- which backs the NLF -- has expressed opposition to any large-scale offensive that sparks a new exodus of refugees.

An assault on Idlib by Damascus and Moscow could be the last major battle of the civil war that has torn Syria apart since 2011.

Donetsk president Zakharchecko dies in bombing attack
Zakharchecko heads an august list of victims, including top separatist military formation commanders who died violently, although not by Ukrainian fire. Fotos which emerged over the years showed Zakharchecko surrounded by a massive security detail, so it would have been hard to get to the guy via direct fire engagement.

According to Russian blogger Andrei Chervonets, five others were killed in the attack including a child.

[AlJazeera] A key separatist leader in eastern Ukraine has been killed in a blast at a coffee shop in Donetsk, according to rebels.

The explosion on Friday fatally wounded Alexander Zakharchenko, head of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, which has been pushing for independence since 2014 after Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

Russia accused Ukraine of assassinating the 42-year-old, but Kiev said it had nothing to do with the explosion and blamed separatist infighting.

Zakharchenko "received injuries incompatible with life as a result of an explosion in the centre of Donetsk", the separatist administration said in a statement. It added that the blast also injured Alexander Timofeyev, the deputy prime minister of the self-proclaimed republic.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the killing a "dastardly" crime aimed at destabilising a fragile regional peace.

"I expect that the organisers and executors of this crime will get the deserved punishment," he said in a telegram of condolences released by the Kremlin.

"Zakharchenko was with his colleagues at the cafe when the bomb went off," said Al Jazeera's Rory Challands, reporting from the Russian capital, Moscow. "He is the only confirmed fatality so far from that explosion."

Challands added Donetsk was in lockdown following the blast.

"Nobody is allowed in and nobody is allowed out," he said.

Russia's Investigative Committee, the state body that handles major crimes, said it was treating the killing as "an act of international terrorism".

Former CIA Officer Charged With Spying For China
[NPR.ORG] An ex-CIA officer tossed in the calaboose
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in January at New York's John F. Kennedy airport has been charged with conspiracy to commit espionage on behalf of China years after FBI agents turned up notebooks containing classified information in a search of his hotel room.

Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 53, a naturalized U.S. citizen, had a top-secret clearance and worked as a field agent for the Central Intelligence Agency from 1994 until 2007. He was living in Hong Kong at the time of his arrest, and had apparently been the target of an FBI investigation since 2012, when agents searching a Honolulu hotel room discovered handwritten notes on "asset meeting, operational meeting locations, operational phone numbers, true names of assets, and covert facilities" pertaining to China, according to a court affidavit.

After leaving the CIA, Lee worked for Japan Tobacco International, formed his own company and later joined Christie's auction house in Hong Kong, The South China Morning Post reports.

It is not known why the FBI waiting so long after uncovering the notebooks to arrest Lee; however, it is also not clear how frequently he traveled to the U.S., where his eventual arrest took place.

Mosul clearance continues: 26 turbans tied up, turbans murder Shiite paramilitary emir and family

26 IS members arrested in security operation, northwest of Mosul

Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) Over 20 Islamic State members were arrested near prison, northwest of Mosul, a police source said on Thursday.

Speaking to BasNews, Cap. Omar Sabah, of Nineveh Operations Command, said “security troops carried out an operation, based on information from residents near Badush town over presence of Islamic State members. The troops cordoned off the region.”

Troops, according to Sabah, “arrested 26 militants, possessing weapons and hand grenades after confrontations between the two sides.”

The militants were then taken to detention cells for investigations ahead of standing trials, Sabah said.

Baghdad doesn’t have oil for its own needs, let alone Kurdish provinces: official
[Rudaw] Baghdad has not agreed to send gasoline and diesel to the Kurdistan Region, an Iraqi Oil Ministry official said on Wednesday, saying there is not enough in stock to meet even its own needs, let alone the needs of the Kurdish provinces.

"There is no agreement between the oil derivatives department from the Iraqi Oil Ministry with the Kurdistan Region to send gasoline and diesel to them," Ali Sabah, told Rudaw.

"The amount we possess does not suffice even for us and we cannot send gasoline to any other place."

In Iraq, the government controls the petrol stations where gas is sold at 450 dinars per litre ($0.38). The Kurdistan Region has a free market system and petrol currently costs at least 600 dinars per litre. The KRG takes a 50 dinar per litre tax.

The governor of Sulaimani said recently he had discussed the supplement of petrol to the province with Baghdad authorities in a bid to alleviate the rising price of fuel in the Region.

The Iraqi government has already agreed to send heating oil for all provinces of the Kurdistan Region.

Baghdad sends the Kurdistan Region a limited portion of heating oil as part of the Region’s share for the winter season, Sabah said.

A small portion of gasoline and diesel will be sent to refugees and IDPs as part of Baghdad’s assistance programmes for those living in camps, he added.

Kurdistan Region citizens have not been given their annual barrel of heating oil recently due to financial crisis. The Iraqi government stopped sending it after relations collapsed in 2014, following the KRG’s decision to export oil independent of Baghdad and central government halting salaries for civil servants.

Baghdad and Erbil have worked to improve relations since the events of October 16. The Kurdistan Region received a 12.67 percent share of the federal budget ‐ short of the desired 17 percent, but better than nil, which they had been receiving.

Sailor by day, performer by night — meet the Navy’s drag queen, ‘Harpy Daniels’
[NAVYTIMES] Years before he became a yeoman 3rd class in the United States Navy, Joshua Kelley was entertaining exuberant crowds under his drag name, "Harpy Daniels."

The 24-year-old Berwick, Pennsylvania native, who currently serves as an administrative supervisor aboard the forward-deployed aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan, brought Harpy along for the ride when he decided to join the Navy in February 2016, a choice he said was heavily inspired by his father.

"I’ve heard many stories of the Navy from my father," Kelley told Navy Times. "He’s a 24-year senior chief Navy counselor, so it was something I always had insight on. I grew up with the service, so knowing the benefits of it made it an easy path to take."

One of those benefits was financial stability, something Kelley was struggling to maintain while pursuing drag.

"With drag being my number one passion, it quickly became costly," he said. "On top of just struggling to make ends meet and then pay college loans, the Navy became a great option to get myself situated in life."

Now, despite the furious operational tempo the Navy demands of its personnel, Kelley manages to find time to perform as Harpy Daniels on ship during MWR-sanctioned events designed to give sailors a much-needed break from daily burdens. He even took home a $1,000 Navy Exchange card for a second place finish in a recent lip sync competition.

No Deal! Trade Talks with Canada Conclude for the Week with No Agreement
[BREITBART] U.S. and Canadian officials have concluded the latest round of trade talks without reaching an agreement.

The U.S. is moving ahead with the trade agreement it reached with Mexico, according to the Trump administration. Talks with Canada are expected to resume next week.

"Today the President notified the Congress of his intent to sign a trade agreement with Mexico ‐ and Canada, if it is willing ‐ 90 days from now," U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said.

"We know that a win-win-win agreement is within reach," Canadian foreign minister Chrystia Freeland said in a presser Friday. "The government of Canada will not sign an agreement unless it is good for Canadians."

Freeland added that the U.S. team has been negotiating in "good faith and with good will," contradicting reports that the U.S. was trying to strong-arm Canada into accepting an unfavorable trade agreement.

US military makes preliminary list of possible targets in Syria -- CNN
[ALMASDARNEWS] Among the main targets that could be struck if US President Donald Trump were to order a new round of airstrikes in the country are Syrian facilities alleged to be connected with chemical weapons production, CNN reported.

However, decisions on any specific strikes have not yet been made, a US administration official familiar with the matter told CNN, stressing that the US military could be engaged very quickly if the believed Damascus had launched a chemical weapons attack.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement earlier on Friday that the US sees Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s defense of a possible operation in the province of Idlib as an escalation of the conflict.

Lavrov has said Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government has the legitimate right to expel terrorists from Idlib, where militant groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra have taken refuge.

Speculation about the possibility of a chemical weapons attack in Syria has grown in recent weeks after Russian officials warned of a plot to launch such an assault in order to provoke Western retaliation against the Syrian government.

Lavrov said Russia has evidence that such an attack is being prepared and has already transferred this proof to both the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations.

Jailed woman who leaked US secrets thanks Trump for tweet

In a Thursday telephone interview from a Georgia jail, Reality Winner told "CBS This Morning" that Trump’s tweet was a "breath of fresh air" and it made her laugh. Australian filmmaker sentenced to six years in jail
[Bangkok Post] A Cambodian court sentenced an Australian filmmaker to six years in prison on Friday after finding him guilty of espionage for flying a drone over an opposition party's political rally.

James Ricketson, 69, was tossed in the clink
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
last June after he was photographed flying the drone above the rally organised by the now-dissolved opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) and staged ahead of a communal election.

Ricketson was charged with espionage, although it remains unclear for whom he was spying. His family called the court sentence an "absolute tragedy".

"The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has decided to convict James Ricketson and sentences him to six years in prison for espionage and collecting information that is harmful to the nation between December 2010 and June 2017," judge Seng Leang said.

Ricketson, who has spent more than a year behind bars after his bail was denied, appeared in court wearing a pink prison uniform and holding a copy of the spy-thriller book The Faithful Spy by Alex Berenson.

Speaking in court after the verdict, Ricketson expressed disbelief. "Which country was I conducting espionage for?" he asked.

"James is almost 70 and is not in good health, our family is very scared about what will happen to him in there if things take a turn for the worst," Ricketson's family said in a statement following the verdict, referring to Phnom Penh's Prey Sar prison where Ricketson has been tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
"James is not a spy. James loves Cambodia and the Cambodian people. He is a filmmaker and a humanitarian," the family said.

Former Oberlin instructor receives prison sentence on federal theft charges
[CHRONICLET] A former Oberlin College instructor and an activist for indigenous people was sentenced to prison for stealing more than $77,000 in federal grants designed to help Native Americans.

Robert Roche, 71, was sentenced to four months in prison followed by four months of home confinement by U.S. District Judge Donald Nugent. Roche previously pleaded guilty to counts of theft from programs receiving federal funds.

Roche also was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $77,097.

"This defendant stole from taxpayers and betrayed the Native American families he purported to help," U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman said. "He took tens of thousands of dollars designated for mental health and wellness programs and put the money in his own pockets."

Roche served as executive director of the American Indian Education Center, a Parma-based nonprofit established in 1995 to support Native American causes in Northeast Ohio, according to court documents.

Craig McGuire operated McGuire and Associates LLC, a company that wrote grant applications and provided evaluation services. Roche entered into an agreement with McGuire and Associates in April 2011 to draft grant proposals on behalf of the AIEC.

Later that year, McGuire submitted an application on behalf of the AIEC to receive a Circle of Care grant, offered through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant was designed to provide Native American communities with the tools and resources to design programs to support mental health and wellness for children and families, according to court documents.

Finance minister rules out placement of Pakistan on FATF blacklist
[DAWN] Ruling out placement of Pakistain on the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) blacklist, Finance Minister Asad Umar said on Friday that the negotiated action plan with the FATF would be implemented.

Answering a calling attention notice in the Senate, he said September 2019 was the deadline for compliance, observing that Pakistain would finally be out of the grey-list.

He said 27 deficiencies in five broad categories had been identified in Pakistain’s anti-money laundering and terror financing regime, adding that the basic areas identified were currency smuggling, hawala and financing to proscribed organizations.

ACTION PLAN NEGOTIATED WITH THE ANTI-TERROR FINANCING WATCHDOG WILL BE IMPLEMENTED, ASAD UMAR TELLS SENATE

He told the house that he saw as an opportunity what many regarded as a challenge. "There is nothing we cannot comply with. FATF or no FATF, it is in our own national interest," he remarked.

He said a national executive committee had been formed to deal with the issue which included representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistain (SECP), National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other relevant institutions. He said the first review meeting of the committee would be held on Sept 8.

Kurdish forces kill two Turkish servicemen in Syria’s Afrin
[ALMASDARNEWS] At least two Ottoman Turkish soldiers and two Syrian rebel fighters were killed when Kurdish forces targeted their checkpoint in Afrin region, northern Syria.

According to a statement released by YPG press office, a Kurdish unit carried out a ’sabotage operation’ against a checkpoint jointly run by Ottoman Turkish Army and al-Hamza Division; a Tukish-backed FSA faction.

The operation, which took place in Barbana village of Rajo district, completely destroyed the checkpoint, killing 2 Ottoman Turkish servicemen and 2 FSA myrmidons, and injuring several others.

Scores of FSA-affiliated myrmidons, including senior commanders, have been assassinated recently by Kurdish units since the Syrian rebels ‐ backed by Ottoman Turkish military ‐ took over Afrin last March.
