Chicago 1968: The Night the Democratic Party Died
h/t Instapundit
Fifty years ago tonight, a great American political party was murdered by its own children and closest friends.

The party in question was the Democratic party of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and JFK, which perished during the riots in Grant Park, Chicago, on the night of Aug. 28, 1968, in the midst of the party’s national convention.

Its children in this case were the rioters from the anti‐Vietnam War Left. After killing off the traditional liberal Democratic party they despised, they would go on to take over the corpse and make it the host of America’s radical Left, from Jerry Brown to Bernie Sanders ‐ with George McGovern, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama as their front men.

The friends who joined in the kill were the mainstream media. Their coverage of the riots, that night and later, would make the SDS demonstrators and their violent cohorts ‐ the predecessors of today’s antifa ‐ into martyrs of "police brutality" and Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley’s "Gestapo tactics," as one Democratic senator from Connecticut put it in a speech to the convention that night, when they had in fact been ‐ like today’s antifa ‐ the deliberate instigators of mayhem and bloodshed. Starting that night the New York Times, the Washington Post, and ABC and CBS News would become the enablers of America’s radical Left, even at its most violent ‐ and in the process cut themselves off from the millions of ordinary working Americans who had made the Democratic party their political home.

The Strange Truth About the Pill - Next Stop Gynandromorphville ?
Short snippet:
[BBC] Other studies have found that women on oral contraception remember emotional stories more like men ‐ recalling the gist more than the details. They’re also not as good at recognising emotions in others, such as anger, sadness, or disgust ‐ just like men. It looks suspiciously like certain types of pill are "masculinising" women’s brains.

Emphasis added.

Britain
British intel agencies brushed off Nunes attempt to investigate Steele dossier
[The Hill] House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) tried unsuccessfully earlier this month to meet with the heads of three British intelligence agencies in his efforts to probe the so-called "Steele dossier," according to media reports.

The Atlantic on Tuesday first reported Nunes’s attempt to meet with the MI5, MI6 and GCHQ agencies while in London. The magazine reported that Nunes was seeking information on Christopher Steele, the former British intelligence officer who compiled a dossier of opposition research on President Trump during the 2016 campaign.

Representatives from the agencies considered meeting with Nunes but were unable to because of scheduling conflicts, according to Reuters. Nunes was looking into Steele’s service record and his contacts with Bruce Ohr, a Department of Justice (DOJ) official who has faced attacks from Trump and his allies over his ties to the dossier.

According to Reuters and The Atlantic, Britain’s deputy national security adviser, Madeline Alessandri, met with Nunes during his trip.

In February, Republicans on the House Intelligence panel, which is chaired by Nunes, voted to release a memo claiming that DOJ abused government surveillance powers when it surveilled Trump campaign aide Carter Page during the 2016 campaign.

The memo alleged that the surveillance warrant for Page was based on the Steele dossier, which makes a number of salacious allegations about Trump’s ties to Russia. The dossier was partially funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

The FBI harshly criticized the release of the memo, saying in a statement at the time that it had "grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy."

More to the Story
New documents obtained by investigative journalist Sara Carter show that the FBI's investigation into the Trump campaign --dubbed Operation Crossfire Hurricane -- heavily relied upon faulty intelligence gathered by longtime FBI informant Cambridge Professor Stefan Halper after he tried to set up several members of the Trump campaign.

In the fall of 2016, Adam Lovinger, a former senior official of the Defense Department’s Office of Net Assessment (ONA), stumbled upon evidence that the deep state wanted buried -- documents exposing Halper's role in the frame-up job. He voiced his concerns about what he had found and paid dearly for it.

Lovinger, a DoD analyst turned whistleblower, had his security clearance suspended on May 1, 2017, after he raised concerns about the roughly $1 million in tax-payer funded money Halper had received to write Defense Department foreign policy reports.
"It was a topic of conversation within the office," Lovinger's attorney, Sean M. Bigley, told the Washington Times earlier this month. "What is Halper doing, and why is he being paid astronomically more than others similarly situated?"

According to Bigley, Lovinger was suspended shortly after he began asking questions about the suspicious DoD contracts with Halper, as well as a close friend of Chelsea Clinton and others. He was then relegated to a make-work desk job until April 3, 2018, when he was indefinitely suspended from duty and pay.

Lovinger, a husband and father of three, was the primary breadwinner of his family, according to Carter.
"When Mr. Lovinger raised concerns about DoD’s misuse of Stefan Halper in 2016, he did so without any political designs or knowledge of Mr. Halper’s spying activities," Bigley told SaraACarter.com. "Instead, Mr. Lovinger simply did what all Americans should expect of our civil servants: he reported violations of law and a gross waste of public funds to his superiors."

Bigley told Carter that they had expected some degree of retaliation for the whistleblowing, but were taken aback by the "ferocity" of it.

"We weren’t surprised when DoD bureaucrats moved shortly thereafter to strip Mr. Lovinger of both his security clearance and his detail to the National Security Council, where he had been senior director for strategy as a by-name request of the incoming Trump Administration," said the attorney.

Concentration of Russian ships in the eastern Mediterranean
[Overblog RusNavyIntel- Russia with Google Translate]

Note: Stilted Language due to Google Translate artifacts

The Russian strike group took up residence off Syria. This time, no carriers, but a concentration of ships among the most recent admitted to active duty in the Russian Navy. And for the most part, these units are capable of implementing Kalibr cruise missile fire.

Currently cruising off Syria is a group of 11 ships , including:

- the missile-launching ship Marshal Ustinov (Project 1164, Northern Fleet), which arrives from the Baltic Sea, and Kronstadt, where it took part at the end of July at the Feast of the Fleet. After nearly seven years in repair / modernization in Zvezdochka (Severodvinsk), he was reportedly given anti-ship missiles P-1000 Vulkan, a report recently broadcast on the Perviy Kanal chain vented the range of "1000 km" .. .

- the ASM Severomorsk battleship (Project 1155, Northern Fleet). This ship accompanies Marshal Ustinov . It can also be assumed that this group is escorted by an SSGN (Project 949A for example, such as K-266 Orel who also participated in the Fleet Festival off Kronstadt).

- escort Pytliviy (Project 1135M, Black Sea Fleet)

- the Admiral Grigorovicth frigates , Admiral Essen, Admiral Makarov (Project 11356M, Black Sea Fleet), the latter operating at the same time his rally to the Black Sea from the Baltic Sea, which she left on 18 August. These ships are equipped with Kalibr missiles.

- the small missile launchers Velikiy Ustiug, Grad Svyazhsk (Project 21631, Caspian fleet) and Vichniy Volochek (Project 21631, Black Sea Fleet), the latter having been paid to the fleet on 1 June. These ships are equipped with Kalibr missiles.

- the classic attack submarines B-268 Velikiy Novgorod and B-271 Kolpino (Project 0636.3, Black Sea Fleet), which are breaking a longevity record for their combat mission in the Mediterranean. These ships are equipped with Kalibr missiles.

What can be said about the composition of this group that completes a tanker, the Ivan Bubnov (Black Sea Fleet)?

- three naval formations are concerned: the Northern Fleet, the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Fleet,

- with 11 combat vessels, the number of ships in this group is in a high average , as this figure tends to be around 5 to 6, plus support ships ,

- of the 11 units, 8 are capable of firing Kalibr missiles, giving this group a powerful strike ability ,

- of the 11 units, 8 were admitted to active duty in the last 24 months ,

- in the event of strikes, it will be the "baptism of fire" for the small missile ship Vichniy Volochek , and the first operational mission in the Mediterranean for her sister ships which have arrived from the Caspian Sea.

What is the purpose of this deployment?

The Russian media highlight the desire to dissuade the United States to carry out new strikes against the Damascus regime. However, if that were to happen, we can assume that it would be "in good intelligence" with the Russians, as in April.

Caribbean-Latin America
Dan Pipes, WSJ: Venezuela's Tyranny of Bad Ideas
[WSJ] Socialism was a proven failure, but Hugo Chávez got his countrymen to try it.

Ideas run the world. Good ones create freedom and wealth; bad ones, oppression and poverty. You are not what you eat, but what you think.

Politicians in particular fall under the sway of ideas. As John Maynard Keynes put it, "Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist. Madmen in authority, who hear voices in the air, are distilling their frenzy from some academic scribbler of a few years back. . . . It is ideas, not vested interests, which are dangerous for good or evil."

The story of Venezuela makes this point with singular clarity. In 1914 the discovery of oil brought the country vast revenues and produced a relatively free economy. By 1950 Venezuela enjoyed the fourth-highest per capita income in the world, behind only the U.S., Switzerland and New Zealand. As late as 1980, it boasted the world’s fastest-growingeconomy in the 20th century. In 2001 Venezuela still ranked as Latin America’s wealthiest country.

Venezuela’s troubles, however, had begun long before. Starting around 1958, government interference in the economy, including price and exchange controls, higher taxes, and restrictions on property rights, led to decades of stagnation, with per capita real income declining 0.13% from 1960-97. Still, it remained a normal, functioning country.

Today the country with the world’s largest oil reserves suffers from a severely contracting economy, runaway inflation, despotism, mass emigration, criminality, disease, hunger and starvation, with circumstances deteriorating daily. Venezuela’s economy contracted by 16% in 2016, 14% last year and a predicted 15% in 2018. Inflation was at 112% in 2015 and 2,800% at the end of last year. Economist Steve Hanke finds an annualized rate of around 65,000% for 2018, making Venezuela’s one of the most severe hyperinflations ever. Food shortages led to an average weight loss among Venezuelans of 18 pounds in 2016 and 24 pounds in 2017.

What caused this crisis? Foreign invasion, civil war, natural disaster, substitutes for oil, or agricultural plagues? No, bad ideas, pure and simple.

Socialism might have been a proven failure globally, but Hugo Chávez convinced Venezuelans to try it. On becoming president in 1999, he stole, dominated, polarized and jailed. Benefiting from about $1 trillion in oil sales during his 14 years as president, he had the means to launch massive social spending programs to secure votes. He could even afford to kill the goose laying golden eggs, replacing competent professionals at the government-owned oil company with agents, stooges and sycophants. In the grandest socialist tradition, his daughter María accumulated a fortune estimated at $4.2 billion in 2015, according to Venezuelan press reports.

"The trouble with socialism," Margaret Thatcher once observed, "is that eventually you run out of other people’s money." Chávez pre-empted that problem by seeking treatment for his cancer in Havana, where, Fox News reports, he "was assassinated by Cuban malpractice." He died in March 2013, about a year before oil prices tumbled, and conveniently bequeathed the disaster that followed to Nicolás Maduro, his still more brutal and incompetent handpicked successor. Once oil revenues shrank, the true costs of Chávez’ bankrupt ideas became clear. Venezuela is now sinking into totalitarianism, using military force to keep socialism afloat.

Bad ideas have always existed, but they acquired new importance with the advent of liberalism in the late 17th century. Before then, conservatism‐respecting tradition while adapting it to new circumstances‐had prevailed. An individual king’s or religious leader’s besotted vision could progress only so far before convention rolled it back. Liberalism rendered tradition optional by optimistically deeming each person capable to think through the great issues from first principles on his own.

Radical theories proliferated, especially during the French Revolution. The floodgates were opened for ideas unmoored from experience and common sense, such as conspiracy theories. These ideas incubated through the 19th century and came to terrible fruition after World War I with fascism, Nazism, socialism and communism. As historian Paul Johnson notes, "The worst of all despotisms is the heartless tyranny of ideas."

The roll call of tyrants who have imposed their own philosophies over the past century is depressingly long, including Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, Tojo, Hitler, Ho, Mao, Kim, Nasser, Pol Pot, Mugabe, Assad, Saddam Hussein, Khomeini, and Chávez. They fully understood their own game; as Stalin reportedly observed, "Ideas are more powerful than guns." Each one devastated his fiefdom.

If bad ideas bring horror, their antidote lies in conservative, modest, tried-and-tested ideas that respect tradition and human nature; not in revolutionary lurches and grandiose experiments, but in incremental improvements on customary practices.

At a moment when many Democrats are ignoring the lessons of Venezuela and swooning over socialism, it’s back to the barricades in the war of ideas.

Cyber
A Chinese-owned company penetrated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private server
The company inserted code that forwarded copies of Clinton emails to the Chinese company in real time.

[Daily Caller] The Intelligence Community Inspector General warned of the problem, but the FBI subsequently failed to act, Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert said during a July hearing.

The Chinese firm obtained Clinton’s emails in real time as she sent and received communications and documents through her personal server, according to the sources, who said the hacking was conducted as part of an intelligence operation.

The Chinese wrote code that was embedded in the server, which was kept in Clinton’s residence in upstate New York. The code generated an instant "courtesy copy" for nearly all of her emails and forwarded them to the Chinese company, according to the sources.

For $7,000 or so our staff could have hired a half dozen Linux monkeys and hacker her closet server in under an hour. I doubt the ChiComs paid that much. NSA must have been inside too.

#1  The intelligence officer declined to name of the Chinese company.

“We do know the name of the company. There are indications there are other ‘cutouts’ that were involved. I would be in a lot of trouble if I gave you the name,” he told TheDCNF.

"Other cutouts"....The Paki Awan bros? A sitting president possibly ?

Or perhaps the "Chinese-owned company operating in the Washington, D.C." (snicker, snicker) wasn't actually a Chinese Company, but rather a clandestine monitoring and distribution/dissemination network. Can't pin everything on the bloody Russians now can we ?

She was obviously a 'control' problem and refused (or was instructed not) to utilize the .gov system, how else could she have been monitored ?

#5  In my experience as a computer system administrator, monitoring the logs every single day, I can tell you the Chinese are by far the most prolific hackers. The Russians are a distant second. Obama had eight years to do something about it and he failed. Bush had eight years before that and he too failed. So to blame the hacking of the DNC email server on Trump and the Russians is...disingenuous at best. Further, anyone who administers such a server and fails to acknowledge the risk, fails to take defensive measure and fails to harden the server against such attacks should be fired. But then, I have also witnessed people in senior management positions, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz is an example, who don't know what they don't know about these things and won't listen to people who do know. Obama in particular should have known about the Chinese. I'd like to believe that Bush and Obama fell into this category as well but I can't help thinking they might have been complicit. Of course, there is always the deep, dark suspicion that little Debbie was complicit with her Paki friends too. Actually, the only real question is whether these people are ignorant or worse than ignorant.

Follow-on to Fred's Chemnitz piece: Germany: 6 people injured during violent far-right 'migrant crime related' protest
[ABC] Germany's top security official offered to send federal assistance to the eastern state of Saxony on Tuesday following violence during a far-right protest in the city of Chemnitz that left at least six people injured.

The protest late Monday, sparked by the killing of a 35-year-old German man in an altercation with migrants over the weekend, erupted into clashes between neo-Nazis and left-wing counter-protesters. Opposition parties criticized police for failing to prevent the violence.

"The police in Saxony are in a difficult situation," Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said. "Should it be requested, the federal government will provide police support."

Green lawmaker Konstantin von Notz urged Seehofer to consider resigning, accusing him of fanning anti-migrant sentiment over the past year.

Von Notz told the news portal t-online.de that the violence in Chemnitz recalled events elsewhere in eastern Germany during the early 1990s, when authorities failed to stop far-right mobs from attacking migrants.

The German news agency dpa reported that Chemnitz police acknowledged having mobilized too few officers for the demonstration. Footage showed officers struggling to prevent far-right protesters breaking through police lines and demonstrators performing Nazi salutes and chanting "the national resistance is marching here!"

The state of Saxony has long been a hotbed of anti-migrant sentiment. The far-right Alternative for Germany party received almost a quarter of the vote in Chemnitz last year.

Chemnitz police said they have arrested a 22-year-old Syrian and a 21-year-old Iraqi on suspicion of manslaughter in the stabbing death of the German man after a street festival early Sunday. Prosecutors said the killing was preceded by a verbal confrontation that escalated.

#1  The relevant paradigm isn't 'criminality/law enforcement.'

This is a clash of cultures, a clash of consensuses about what is right and decent and about what is legal.

E.g. the main defendant in the Burgwedel stabbing has released a written statement to the public in which he declares that stabbing and killing a person by whom one was insulted is permissible according to his cultural customs.

He further states that his comportment was adequate according to the requirements of his religion and that he does not understand why he's been arrested.

To put it bluntly, the refugees believe themselves to be the lords and masters of a country that has surrendered to them and that the civilian population of said country has a legal standing lower than that of Dhimmies.

Some Germans and other Europeans disagree. Hence the clash of consensuses.

#4  Real Nazis or labeled as such by the press/authorities?

Here's a link to video footage of the spontaneus demonstration on 8/26 that was apparently instigated by a local football hooligan group.

There was another demonstration on 8/27 where 2000-10000 (according to different sources) rightist protesters were confronted by about 1000 leftist counter protesters.

The police is investigating 10 alleged incident of protesters showing the Nazi salute. Not all Nazi's are dumb enough to show the salute but on the other hand some saluters might have been agents provocateurs.

IMO real Nazi's did participate but they didn't dominate in any way.

The crowd in general appeared to be more comfortable with violence and far less civil and polite than e.g. Pegida though.

When polite is not permitted to work, then impolite is the natural next step. More briefly, this is how you get more Trump.

Posted by: Frank G || 08/28/2018 14:57 Comments || Top||

#8  The state of Saxony has long been a hotbed of anti-migrant sentiment.

I'm going to paint with a broad brush. In a nutshell, this is the issue with Saxony:

The state of Saxony is also the only eastern state where the Communist Party of East Germany hasn't held power at the state level since 1990.

Saxony is the part of the old Soviet zone that isn't culturally Prussian.

Saxons have a cultural affinity for freedom and individualism that is lacking in other parts of East Germany.

It was Saxon resistance that doomed plans for a reformed moderately communist GDR under new leadership in 1989/90.

This is why specifically Saxony is hated by a German political class which is dominated by a person who was raised as an unorthodox and very much Prussian communist.

Mark Levin: 'You cannot impeach a President on events that took place before he was President'
[Breitbart] Monday on Fox News Channel’s "Hannity," conservative talker Mark Levin said he thought President Donald Trump was in "great shape" on what would be impeachable given the alleged indiscretions of which his opponents are accusing him occurred before his presidency.

Levin cited case law, noting that the standard for presidents and vice presidents was different than that for judges.

"Well, the president is actually in great shape when it comes to the law and when it comes to impeachment," Levin said. "On impeachment, all we have to do is vote and make sure the Democrats don’t win, and then he won’t be impeached. There is an idea. Anyway, that’s the headline, though ‐ the president is in very good shape. You cannot impeach a president on events that occurred before he was president. I don’t know people are aware of this. The precedent is the Vice President [Colfax] case in 1873. Judges different ‐ presidents, vice presidents on events that occurred beforehand. So even if they load up their phony list, we ought to keep that in mind."

Kim Strassel - 'When Justice Is Partial'
[WSJ] Mueller is determined to sniff out any wrongdoing he can find‐on one side.

U.S. Attorney Robert Khuzami took a few moments in his Tuesday statement about Michael Cohen’s plea deal to sing neutrality’s praise: "His day of reckoning serves as a reminder that we are a nation of laws, with one set of rules that applies equally to everyone."

Noble words, and they used to mean something. But a disparity of justice is at the heart of our current crisis of faith in institutions. Americans aren’t outraged that the Federal Bureau of Investigation felt obliged to investigate allegations leveled at campaigns, or that a special counsel is looking at Russian electoral interference. They are instead furious that Lady Justice seems to have it in for only one side.

The country has watched the FBI treat one presidential campaign with kid gloves, the other with informants, warrants and eavesdropping. They’ve seen the Justice Department resist all efforts at accountability, even as it fails to hold its own accountable. And don’t get them started on the one-sided media.

And they are now witnessing unequal treatment in special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe. Yes, the former FBI director deserves credit for smoking out the Russian trolls who interfered in 2016. And one can argue he is obliged to pursue any evidence of criminal acts, even those unrelated to Russia. But what cannot be justified is the one-sided nature of his probe.

Consider Mr. Cohen, the former Trump lawyer who this week pleaded guilty to eight felony charges. Six related to his personal business dealings; the other two involved campaign-finance violations arising from payments to women claiming affairs with Donald Trump. The criminal prosecution of campaign-finance offenses is exceptionally rare (most charges are civil), but let’s take Mr. Khuzami’s word for it when he says Mr. Cohen’s crimes are "particularly significant" because he’s a lawyer who should know better, and also because the payments were for the purpose of "influencing an election" and undermining its "integrity."

If there is only "one set of rules," where is Mr. Mueller’s referral of a case against Hillary for America? Federal law requires campaigns to disclose the recipient and purpose of any payments. The Clinton campaign paid Fusion GPS to compile a dossier against Mr. Trump, a document that became the basis of the Russia narrative Mr. Mueller now investigates. But the campaign funneled the money to law firm Perkins Coie, which in turn paid Fusion. The campaign falsely described the money as payment for "legal services." The Democratic National Committee did the same. A Perkins Coie spokesperson has claimed that neither the Clinton campaign nor the DNC was aware that Fusion GPS had been hired to conduct the research, and maybe so. But a lot of lawyers here seemed to have been ignoring a clear statute, presumably with the intent of influencing an election.

Prosecutions under the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) are also exceptionally rare, though Mr. Mueller is getting media kudos for hammering the likes of Paul Manafort and Rick Gates for failing to register as lobbyists for foreign entities. The law is the law.

But under this standard, where are the charges against the principals of Fusion GPS, who Sen. Chuck Grassley has said look to have been lobbying on behalf of powerful Russians against a U.S. sanctions law, with its payment again funneled through a law firm? This was a sideline to its dossier work, but Mr. Mueller usually has no issue with sideline charges.

Or what about an evenhanded look at dossier author Christopher Steele ? FARA also requires foreigners to register if they act on behalf of a foreign principal. Recently disclosed emails from senior Justice Department official Bruce Ohr show the British Mr. Steele pleading the case to the Justice Department on behalf of a Russian oligarch, Oleg Deripaska.

Of the seven U.S. citizens Mr. Mueller has charged, five have been accused of (among other things) making false statements to federal officials. But there have been no charges against the partisans who made repeated abjectly false claims to the FBI and Justice Department about actions of their political opponents. There have been no charges against those who leaked classified information, including the unprecedented release of an unmasked conversation between former national security adviser Mike Flynn and a Russian ambassador. Nothing.

Some of these charges might not stand up in court, but that’s beside the point. Plenty of lawyers would poke holes in the campaign-finance charges against Cohen, or the "lying" charges against Mr. Flynn. Special counsels wield immense power; the mere threat of a charge provokes plea deals. It’s the focus that matters.

Prosecutors can claim all they want that they are applying the law equally, but if they only apply it to half the suspects, justice is not served. Mr. Mueller seems blind to the national need for‐the basic expectation of‐a thorough look into all parties. That omission is fundamentally undermining any legitimacy in his findings. Lady Justice does not wear a blindfold over only one eye.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Florida video game shooter had been in nut-house, still purchased guns ?
[ABC] JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Court records obtained by The Associated Press show that a man accused of killing two people and then himself at a video gaming competition in Florida had been hospitalized for mental illness.

Divorce filings from the parents of 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore say that as a teenager he was twice hospitalized in psychiatric facilities and that he was prescribed anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications.

The records show Katz's parents disagreed deeply on how to care for their troubled son. Katz's father claimed his estranged wife was exaggerating symptoms of mental illness as part of the couple's long-running and acrimonious custody battle. They divorced in 2007.

Authorities say Katz killed two people and wounded nine others Sunday before fatally shooting himself at the "Madden NFL 19" tournament in Jacksonville.

#7  The Baltimore Sun has details of his psychiatric history, including:

By 12 years old, he was taking Risperdal, an anti-psychotic drug to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, his father said in court records. He often missed school and resisted treatment, sometimes curling into a ball. His father said the boy would appear to be “looking right through you.”

A raft of psychologists and counselors offered various opinions on his behavior over the years. In court records, one therapist described 12-year-old David Katz as suffering a “psychiatric crisis.” The therapist concluded in 2006 that the boy’s depression interfered with his ability to eat, sleep and rise from bed.

Bodyguards assigned to Jewish delegates at UK Labour Party conference
See how Jerry Corbyn’s Labour party ensures that Jewish party members feel safe and included.
[Jpost] Jewish delegates to the upcoming British Labour Party conference will be given bodyguards over fears for their safety from supporters of party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The protection also will be offered to Jewish Labour Party politicians, the Daily Mail reported late Saturday.

The newspaper reported that the Jewish Labour Movement has held talks with the Community Security Trust, which oversees security for the Jewish community in Britannia, about providing security for next month’s conference, which will be held in Liverpool.

Jewish Labour politician Luciana Berger, who serves as Parliamentary chair for the Jewish Labour Movement, on Saturday slammed Corbyn for statements made in 2013, but which surfaced last week on video, in which he said that "Zionists" were unable to understand British ways of thinking despite growing up in the country.

Berger said she felt "unwelcome" in her own party after Corbyn’s "inexcusable comments."

The Daily Mail quoted an unnamed source as saying that "CST are reporting back with a full assessment of the security requirements. There is a real concern about safety."

Labour members who questioned the loyalty of British Jews have been investigated as part of Labour Party internal inquiries into antisemitism, the party told the newspaper.

A party front man also told the Mail that the party "is committed to the security and well-being of all Jewish people."

"Jeremy is determined to tackle antisemitism both within the Labour Party and wider society and the Party is committed to rebuilding trust with the Jewish community," the party said in a statement on Saturday night.

Writer and activist Adam Ma’anit in a series of tweets accused Labour of sinking "into an anti-Semitic cesspit of its own making."

Ma’anit, who said his 16-year-old cousin Orly Ofir was killed by bully boyz linked to ex-Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", military leader Husam Badran, who appeared at a 2012 conference in Doha with Corbyn, also tweeted that "Recently revealed details of Corbyn’s troubling past associations means I can no longer remain silent. This is personal."

"At the ’remarkable’ Doha conference, this supposed ’man of peace’ Corbyn described contributions from recently released ’brothers’ like Badran as ’fascinating and electrifying.’ I felt sick to my stomach at these words."

Last month, Britannia’s three Jewish newspapers united in publishing a front-page editorial warning of the "existential" threat to British Jewry that a government led by Jeremy Corbyn would pose.

French parliament building locked down after death threats to Jewish MP
[Jpost] French MP Meyer Habib received an envelope on Monday with white powder, leading a wing of the French National Assembly to be shut down.

"Fat Zionist pig," the letter began, "you are not French. You do not belong in the Assembly. You are only a f*cking Israeli terrorist with blood on your hands."

Security evacuated the B wing of the French National Assembly for over two-and-a-half hours, and chemical experts examined the substance sent in the envelope to ensure there was no danger.

Habib said that "it is sad and disconcerting that we have reached a situation in which a member of the French parliament receives death threats because he is Jewish and a friend of Israel.

Beyond the personal matter, I am very concerned for the French Republic, and I think action and a response are needed at the highest levels."

The MP has long faced threats to his life and, unlike most in his position, has bodyguards provided by the French authorities.

Habib, a French-Israeli and a longtime friend of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, represents French expats in the Mediterranean countries, including Italia, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
, the Holy See, Cyprus and more ‐ as well as Israel, which has more French citizens than all the other countries combined.

Police to be deployed along coast amid fears of Hamas infiltration — TV report
[IsraelTimes] Increased troop deployment aims to secure Ashkelon amid fears Gazoo's ruling terror group may try to attack from the sea

Border Police will be stationed in the coming days along the coast of the southern city of Ashkelon amid IDF concerns that Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", may try to infiltrate Israel for an attack by sea, according to a Sunday TV report.

Hadashot news said the additional troops will perform security operations, conduct patrols and keep constant lookout to detect any potential Lions of Islam coming in from the sea.

The IDF has said Hamas is working to improve its ability to penetrate Israel from the sea, and in recent months Israel has been constructing a sea barrier to prevent such an incident.

Work began on the barrier on May. When completed it will be 200 meters (650 feet) long, 50 meters (160 feet) wide and six meters (20 feet) above the water. There will also be defensive infrastructure along the top.

The barrier, described by the ministry as an "impregnable breakwater" and constructed in the area of Zikim beach adjacent to the coastal enclave, is designed to withstand waves and last for many years.

The decision to build the barrier was prompted by an attack carried out during the 2014 war in Gazoo. On July 8, 2014, four Hamas naval commandos swam ashore outside Kibbutz Zikim on Israel’s southern coast. The frogmen brought with them automatic weapons, grenades and explosives. Some 40 minutes after they came in from the surf, the Hamas operatives were killed in a combined strike from the sea, ground and air.

Suspected incendiary balloons cause 3 fires
[Ynet] Fires break out in Be'eri and Shokeda forests and in Sa'ad Junction; 'It was likely a balloon, as the fire broke out at Sa'ad Junction within seconds and at this point there isn't anything else that can be pointed to as the cause of the fire,' says security official.

Three fires broke out on Monday afternoon, two of them near Israeli communities by the Gazoo border. Firefighters, including KKL teams, gained control of the flames.

The first fire broke out near the Be'eri Forest, another in Sa'ad Junction and a third in the Shokeda Forest.

The fires are suspected to have been started by incendiary balloons flown from Gazoo into Israel, and fire Sherlocks are on the scene. Recent days saw a halt in incendiary balloon fires.

"It was likely a balloon, as the fire broke out at Sa'ad Junction within seconds and at this point there isn't anything else apart from an incendiary balloon that can be pointed to as the cause of the fire, but we're still examining the matter," said one of the security forces personnel on the scene.

The previous incendiary balloon-caused fire happened exactly a week ago. A day prior to that, on Sunday of last week, three fires broke out in the Gazoo border area as a result of incendiary balloons.

New Mexico compound suspects allegedly planned to attack Atlanta's Grady Hospital
[CNN] A handwritten document titled "Phases of a Terrorist Attack." Talk of confronting and attacking "corrupt" institutions, including Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital. Jokes about dying in jihad. An underground stash of weapons and ammunition.

New court documents revealed these and other details in the case against five adults who lived in squalor with 11 starving children in a ramshackle New Mexico compound.

In a case infused with allegations of abuse and terrorism, prosecutors this week asked a judge to reconsider an order granting bond to all five adults arrested at the compound.

As part of the request, prosecutors on Friday cited not only the death of three-year-old Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj at the remote site but also plans by the defendants to attack law enforcement and "specific targets such as teachers, schools, banks and other 'corrupt' institutions."

The dead boy's father, Siraj Wahhaj, 40, and his partner, Jany Leveille, 35, have been charged with abuse of a child resulting in death, a first-degree felony with a penalty of up to life in prison, according to court documents. They were also charged with conspiracy to commit child abuse, also a first-degree felony.

The couple and three other adults -- Wahhaj's sisters, Hujrah Wahhaj and Subhannah Wahhaj; and Lucas Morten -- were previously charged with 11 felony counts of child abuse.

Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
for allegedly being behind the human rights
...which often include carefully measured allowances of freedom at the convenience of the state...
violations as well as the ethnic and religious festivities that have happened in the Æthiopian Somali region," Æthiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) said, citing the attorney general.

The state broadcaster on Monday showed armed federal coppers leading Abdi out of a house in the capital Addis Ababa and into an SUV.

The unrest in Somali region began earlier this month when the Æthiopian military moved into Jijiga, sparking looting and mob attacks on non-Somali residents, witnesses told AFP.

The Æthiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church later said churches were burned and five priests killed in the violence.

It is unclear what sparked the military’s intervention. However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
on August 7, Abdi resigned.

Somali region is Æthiopia’s second-largest but also one of its most unstable, and rights groups have repeatedly accused Abdi’s government of using its Liyu police force to carry out abuses.

Last year, festivities between Somalis and the neighboring Oromo people along their regional border forced 1.1 million people from their homes and left hundreds dead.

In July, Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Abdi of running a secret jail where suspected members of a separatist group were tortured.

China Has Withheld Samples of a Dangerous Flu Virus
[MSN] For over a year, the Chinese government has withheld lab samples of a rapidly evolving influenza virus from the United States ‐ specimens needed to develop vaccines and treatments, according to federal health officials.

Despite persistent requests from government officials and research institutions, China has not provided samples of the dangerous virus, a type of bird flu called H7N9. In the past, such exchanges have been mostly routine under rules established by the World Health Organization.

Now, as the United States and China spar over trade, some scientists worry that the vital exchange of medical supplies and information could slow, hampering preparedness for the next biological threat.

The scenario is "unlike shortages in aluminum and soybeans," said Dr. Michael Callahan, an infectious disease specialist at Harvard Medical School.

"Jeopardizing U.S. access to foreign pathogens and therapies to counter them undermines our nation’s ability to protect against infections which can spread globally within days."

Experts concur that the world’s next global pandemic will likely come from a repeat offender: the flu. The H7N9 virus is one candidate.

Since taking root in China in 2013, the virus has spread through poultry farms, evolving into a highly pathogenic strain that can infect humans. It has killed 40 percent of its victims.

If this strain were to become highly contagious among humans, seasonal flu vaccines would provide little to no protection. Americans have virtually no immunity.

Moscow Proposes 'Deploying Troops in Lebanon' to Return Refugees
[AnNahar] Russia has proposed sending a brigade from its military police 20 kilometers into Leb to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to their country, media reports said.

The suggestion was made during the latest Geneva meeting between the national security advisers of Russia and the United States, Lebanese political sources cited U.S. diplomatic and media reports as saying in remarks published Sunday by Kuwait's al-Anbaa newspaper.

According to the reports, the Russian forces would be stationed in the Bekaa Valley near Syria's border in order to "create a corridor for Syrian refugees whose hometowns have become safe."

The refugees would be repatriated "with Russian guarantees and in cooperation with the Syrian and Lebanese authorities," the sources said.

"The Russian side stressed its ability to convince Lebanese President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
...

of this idea, knowing that he is constitutionally capable of taking the decision to allow the Russia force to enter the country for a temporary period of 90 days," the sources added.

During that period, Russia would "provide around 1,000 buses while 500 Lebanese Army trucks and 500 Syrian army trucks would be deployed to transfer belongings, with guarantees that no returnee would be tossed in the calaboose
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
," the sources went on to say.

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton however rejected the proposal and considered that such a move would "violate Leb's illusory sovereignty" at a time Washington is equipping the country's army, the sources added.

Judge rules Nevada pimp can reopen brothel near Las Vegas
[AP] LAS VEGAS (AP) ‐ Nevada’s most famous legal pimp can re-open his brothel near Las Vegas after county officials ordered it closed, a judge ruled Monday.

Dennis Hof, who starred in the HBO adult reality series "Cathouse," and is a Republican candidate for a state legislative seat, sued officials in Nye County after they shuttered his Love Ranch brothel earlier this month. The bordello near Pahrump, about an hour away from Las Vegas, is one of several that Hof owns.

County officials said Hof had failed to renew his licenses and pay fees for the brothel, where NBA player Lamar Odom was found unconscious in 2015.

Judge Richard Boulware on Monday noted other brothels in the county that were similarly late paying renewal fees were not punished, the Las Vegas Sun reported. Boulware also noted votes by two county commissioners to yank Hof’s license could have been in retaliation for separate lawsuits he has filed against them.

The judge ruled Hof could reopen his brothel Tuesday.

Hof estimated he lost $100,000 in the three-week closure, which follows a similar dispute earlier this year when his license was temporally suspended over permits for renovations. He maintains the disputes with the county are politically-motivated.

"It’s right over might," Hof said. "The county did bad things to me; they took away my business, affecting 40 peoples’ families and the judge saw right through it. It’s political retribution."

County spokesman Arnold Knightly says officials will look at revamping its licensing process ‐ including the way that brothels are notified about their expired fees.

Hof’s regulatory problems come as a coalition of religious groups and anti-sex trafficking activists have pushed to overturn a law allowing brothels to operate. Voters in Lyon County, where Hof has four brothels, will consider the issue in November. A similar effort failed in Nye County.

Hof, who has billed himself as "The Trump of Pahrump," has upended local politics after ousting an incumbent GOP lawmaker in a primary this summer.

Brothels, which are illegal in the counties that contain Las Vegas and Reno, harken back to Nevada’s days as a mining territory about 150 years ago. Brothels were illegal but tolerated in some areas until 1971, when the Mustang Ranch near Reno became the first legal brothel. It led to a movement that allowed counties with populations of 700,000 people or fewer to decide whether to legalize prostitution in licensed facilities. Outside of bordellos, prostitution is illegal.

About 20 brothels operate in Nevada, mostly in rural areas. The state doesn’t publicize how many are open, and most owners keep a much lower profile than Hof.

Israel inks deal for precision rockets that can reach ‘anywhere in the region’
[IsraelTimes] The Defense Ministry announces it has purchased a vast network of surface-to-surface precision missiles capable of reaching any target in the region.

The deal inked with Israel Military Industries is worth several hundred million shekels, and will supply the IDF with rockets that can hit targets between 30 and 150 kilometers away (18 to 93 miles), according to a ministry statement.

Spokeswomen for both the Defense Ministry and IMI declined to disclose the exact price of the rocket system or further details of the rockets’ capabilities.

"We are acquiring and developing precision fire systems that will enable the IDF... within a few years to cover anywhere in the region," Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman says.

Since then, the Syrian Arab Army has managed to liberate a great deal of territory in eastern Sweida, which has ultimately forced the Islamic State to retreat to the al-Safa Mountain to make their last stand.

The Syrian Arab Army is now storming the al-Safa Mountain, but the battle itself has proven much more costly than initially expected.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the Islamic State has lost at least 154 hard boyz since the Syrian Arab Army launched their offensive 33 days ago.

While the total number of Syrian Arab Army soldiers killed is still unknown, the overall casualty total likely exceeds 100, as the Islamic State has proven unwilling to yield their last positions inside the al-Safa region.

Arab Coalition: The UN took ‘wrong stances based on false allegations’
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Arab Coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen’s front man, Turki al-Maliki, said that the coalition is surprised by some of the statements made by UN officials.

In a presser in Monday in Riyadh, Maliki said that these officials have taken wrong stances based on false allegations.

"We are aware of the Houthi

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
pressure on UN humanitarian organizations, but the UN should not remain silent about Houthi violations," Maliki said.

Maliki stressed that the fish market attack was caused by the Houthis, although they continue to deny it. He added that the environment in Sanaa is not suitable for any UN organization to be present there.

He said that the coalition follows certain guidelines, and is open to any communication by UN bodies but affirmed that there should be neutrality in stances, and a commitment to the principles of the UN on humanitarian issues, instead of "remaining silent over Houthi violations".

"There was no official UN statement about the Houthi militias’ control of an international organizations’ warehouses," Maliki said.

He reaffirmed that Yemen's humanitarian ports are operating at full capacity and that air, land and sea permits are granted continuously.

Maliki also said that the Houthis have fired eight ballistic missiles recently, five of which were during the Hajj season. He added that the militias continue to use hospitals and schools for military purposes.

Foxconn pledges $100 million matching gift to UW-Madison to establish new research enterprise
[Journal Sentinel] MADISON - Foxconn Technology Group on Monday pledged up to $100 million to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including funding to help establish a new interdisciplinary research facility for the College of Engineering that will collaborate with the company's planned manufacturing complex in southeast Wisconsin.

Foxconn Chairman and founder Terry Gou was on campus to make the announcement at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery alongside UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank and several campus deans from colleges that stand to benefit.

To receive the full $100 million from Foxconn, UW must raise another $100 million in private gifts over the next two years as part of a broader, $3.2 billion fundraising campaign dubbed All Ways Forward.

The subcampaign to match Foxconn's gift will focus on supporting research that advances engineering, data and computer science, ROTC Building, and human health. A matching gift is intended to provide an incentive for others to step up, according to university officials.

"Foxconn would not be obligated to complete the $100 million gift, unless UW raises an equivalent amount by the end of the campaign in those broad areas," UW spokesman John Lucas confirmed later Monday.

Earlier, Blank described Foxconn's pledge as the largest investment from a research partner in the university's history and among the largest gifts UW has ever received. It will include money to fast-track a new engineering building that has been only on the long-range drawing board until now.

Sexual harassment can't be justified, prohibited in Islam: Egypt's Al-Azhar
[AlAhram] Egypt's Al Azhar Institution said on Monday that sexual harassment was prohibited in Islam and can't be justified under any circumstance.

"Al-Azhar stresses that sexual harassment, whether a sign, verbal or physical, is a prohibited and perverted action," Egypt's biggest Islamic religious institution said.

Al-Azhar added that it followed recent incidents of sexual harassment in the media and social media, condemning how some may blame the clothes of female sexual harassment victims.

"Criminalizing sexual harassment should be absolute with no condition that justifies sexual harassment in regards to the actions or clothing choices of girls, which represents a misunderstanding of the nature of harassment as an attack on a woman's privacy, freedom, and dignity" the statement read.

Using examples from the Holy Koran and Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon Him) about how women should feel safe whether in their life or travel in Islam, al-Azhar attempted to raise social awareness of how harmful sexual harassment is.

Al-Azhar also called on media to avoid publishing any material that promotes or encourages sexual harassment.

The statement comes following a series of sexual harassment incidents recently in Egyptian society where some claimed the women and their attire were the reason behind sexual harassment.

Iran and Syria sign defense, reconstruction deal
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The defense ministers of Iran and Syria have signed an agreement on military cooperation and reconstruction in the war-torn country, Iranian media reported on Monday.

"Syria is passing through the crisis stage and entering the reconstruction phase," said Iran's Defence Minister Amir Hatami, according to the Tasnim news agency.

Hatami is on the second day of a two-day visit to Damascus, during which he held "detailed negotiations" with his counterpart Ali Abdullah Ayoub and Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...
, according to Tasnim.

The "defence and technical agreement" provides for the continued "presence and participation" of Iran in Syria, Hatami added.

Tehran has provided steady political, financial, and military backing to Assad as he has fought back a seven-year uprising.

Shock after mass attacks against immigrants in Germany
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A vast crowd of anti-immigrants colonists took the streets on Sunday in response to an overnight death of a 35-year-old German man in Chemnitz.

The victim was stabbed during a city festival and the alteration involved 10 people from "various nationalities", according to police sources.

German broadcaster, Deutesche Well, reports that the incident left two other men injured, and another two in jug.

FAR-RIGHT GROUPS SPIRAL OUT OF CONTROL
The anti-immigration brawl involved a vast crowd of 800 people, who were allegedly shouting racist slurs at foreigners and chasing them.

The protesters also hurdled bottles at coppers. Overwhelmed by the rowdy crowd, police forces called for backup from nearby cities to help thin out the mob by Sunday evening.

According to Deutesche Well, the protests followed online calls for mobilization on social media. The populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, and ring-wing "Kaotic Chemnitz" football group, were among the main protestors.

VICTIMS FILE ASSAULT CHARGES
A video showing protestors assaulting individuals who, in their perspective looked non-German, appeared on social media but has not been verified yet.

Chemnitz Mayor, Barbara Ludwig, told local media that she was "horrified" after seeing what took place in her city on Sunday.

Police sources told German magazine Der Spiegel that several people had filed assault charges, including one German man, a woman of Bulgarian descent and a man of Syrian descent.

Boko Haram: Presidency says 100,000 deaths still hanging on Dasuki’s neck
[DAILYNIGERIAN] The presidency has said that no fewer than 100,000 Nigerians died as a result of the diversion of monies under the custody of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, for the purchase of hardware for the Nigerian military.

The Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, stated this in a television programme on Monday.

According to the presidential aide, stated that the non-release of Mr Dasuki was because he has so many cases pending against him, even though the courts may have ordered his release on some of them.

Mr Shehu said that Mr Dasuki’s case fits to "the argument about greater public good overriding individual good."

He said that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami had spoken severally about the weapons which were seized from Dasuki for which he was being charged.

"The bigger thing is that the Attorney General said that more than 100,000 Nigerians have bit the dust arising from actions or inactions of the gentleman while he was in office and how did that happen?

Lawmakers Planning To Unseat HirShabelle State President
[RADIOSHABELLE] A section of the regional parliament of HirShabelle state was reported to have begun meetings on a no-confidence motion against the current president, Mohammed Abdi Waare.

The talks are underway in the state’s Interim capital, Jowhar with reports that the MPs are trying to table the impeachment motion after singing the needed number of signatures.

The regional politicians accused President Waare of incompetence and poor leadership as he is in office less than a year. The state presidential palace is yet to comment on the motion.

The Federal Member state was founded in late 2016 as part of the Federalism in the country and since then it got two presidents elected in Jowhar by the current politicians.

Somali Federal Government is said to be working on a mission to de-escalate the political tension in Jowhar city, in a bid to avert turmoil as the nation is on the path to recovery.

Kenya Plans To Withdraw Its Troops From Somalia, Says Uhuru
[RADIOSHABELLE] Kenya will withdraw its troops from Somalia after more than six years of fight against al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
, the leader of the East African nation said.

Kenya formally sent 4,660 soldiers to Somalia in October 2011 after incessant attacks and kidnappings of civilians by the murderous Moslems within its territory.

A year later, the UN Security Council gave Kenya the green light to join AMISOM, a decision that meant the treasury would not bear the full costs of the incursion.

In an interview with VOA, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said his government carries out plans to pull its forces out of Somalia.

"This is some of the issues we have discussed with our U.S. counterpart, we are all hopeful that we shall be able to pull out of Somalia in the shortest possible time that we will be able to work together with the federal government of Somalia," Mr. Uhuru said.

Mr. Uhuru who is serving his final term of the presidency was the deputy prime minister when Kenya deployed its troops in Somalia to fight al-Shabaab murderous Moslems who allegedly executed attacks inside Kenya.

Since then al-Shabaab conducts frequent assaults in Kenya, mostly in the region bordering Somalia, to put pressure on the Kenyan government to withdraw its peace-keeping troops from Somalia.

The president said his country would like to use expenses spent on its troops in Somalia to be diverted to productive areas.

"So that we can pull back to our borders and reduce that cost that we are currently bearing and be able to focus on that other more productive areas," he explained.

Iran student gets seven years for taking part in protest
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A 21-year-old student in Iran has been sentenced to seven years in prison for taking part in university protests, her lawyer and Iranian media said on Monday.

Gay Pareea Rafei, an arts student at the University of Tehran, was convicted of "assembly with the intention of acting against national security, propaganda against the system and disrupting public order", according to reformist newspaper Shargh.

Her lawyer, Saeed Khalili, described the sentencing as "unfair and unreasonable" on Twitter.

He was also quoted by Shargh as saying: "In my view, none of these charges are logical or a legally sufficient reason to indicate that she has committed a crime."

Khalili said the alleged crimes were focused on a student union demonstration in early December over issues such as dormitory opening hours.

"All these actions are within the framework of law and rights stated in the constitution," Khalili added.

A total of 45 of her fellow students are also behind bars for their part in much broader unrest that swept the country later in December, according to an article in the reformist Etemad newspaper.

It said at least two of the students have been given sentences of eight years, without providing details, and that all the cases were due to be completed within the next month.

Many Iranians took to Twitter to express their support for Rafei, using the hashtag ’Release Gay Pareea Rafei’.

US seeks to ‘severely’ damage Iran economy, top UN court hears
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Renewed sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran aim to damage Tehran’s economy "as severely as possible", the UN’s top court heard Monday.

"The United States is publicly propagating a policy intending to damage as severely as possible Iran’s economy and Iranian nationals and companies," Iran’s lawyer Mohsen Mohebi told the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Washington has slapped renewed sanctions on Tehran. It said they aimed to curb ISIS’s nuclear ambitions.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa suddenly spied Mr. Bartlett at the checkout counter. He was buying Grecian Formula!...
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday that the US will "vigorously defend" itself in the International Court of Justice against Iran’s challenge to the re-imposition of US sanctions.

Iran is set to make opening arguments in The Hague this week against the unilateral sanctions, which were slapped back on three weeks ago following the US withdrawal from a landmark 2015 nuclear accord with Tehran.

"We will vigorously defend against Iran's meritless claims this week in The Hague," Pompeo said.

Muslim countries have failed to tackle matter of blasphemous content, says PM Khan in Senate
[DAWN] Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who isn't your heaviest-duty thinker, maybe not even among the top five...
on Monday said that the absence of an international policy against the generation of blasphemous content is a "collective failure" on part of the Moslem countries.

Addressing the Senate for the first time as prime minister, Imran Khan said his government will raise the matter before the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
(UN), adding: "However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
I do not think that would do much."

The Senate had passed a resolution to bring the UN's attention to the matter regarding the announcement by the leader of Dutch Freedom Party and Parliamentarian Geert Wilders to hold a competition of blasphemous caricatures. The Foreign Office (FO) last week had called the charge d'affaires of the Netherlands to record a protest against the announcement by Wilders.

"Our government will raise the matter in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and ask the Moslem countries to come up with a collective policy that could then be brought up at international forums."

"This should have been done years ago," PM Khan said while giving the example of the Holocaust and how four European countries have jail sentences for "anyone who misquotes the figures of Holocaust. That is because they realise that this is something that hurts the sentiments of the Jewish community."
Way to trivialize it, dude. It’s not about feelings, but the stark denial of monstrous fact.
"We need a similar policy for this matter so that people do not repeatedly hurt our sentiments."

Syrian air defenses reportedly placed on highest alert
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian air defenses have been placed on highest alert across the country, pro-government news hounds claimed this afternoon.
Chem attack by somebody coming soon.
These reports seem to have some truth behind them because a source at the Mezzeh Airbase said that they have been ordered to make preparations for a possible attack on Damascus.

The reason for placing the air defenses on the highest alert was not revealed; however, it is believed to be due to the potential threat of a U.S. strike on the capital or its surrounding area.

Earlier this week, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused the U.S. and its allies of making preparations to attack Syria.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the rebels in Idlib are preparing to launch a chemical weapons attack and blame it on the government.

They said the U.S. will use this chemical weapons attack to launch strikes against the government.

-Land of the Free
In the name of ‘externalities’ that go misunderstood.
[SPECTATOR.ORG] Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other public health advocates think sin taxes should be called and viewed as “health taxes.” Certain activities and products, like gambling and booze, issue “externalities” that are born by the community collectively. They say the overwhelming evidence indicates that higher taxes on alcohol and other vices will reduce excessive consumption and the associated health costs.

For sure, alcohol addiction and severe abuse is damaging. Anyone who has ever known an addict can speak to the awfulness and tragedy of it all. The same goes with compulsive gambling, which is horrifically costly.

So, what’s not to like about a sin or health tax?

Plenty. Dressing up the sin tax as a “health tax” sweeps under the rug some of the problems with this policy tool.

First, any product misused creates externalities. No man is an island unto himself, so when he gorges or misuses a product someone else will be affected. Consider the automobile, which racks up billions of dollars in costs and thousands of lost lives each year. These costs are born collectively. The same is true of guns and government-peddled lottery tickets. So why single out old timey “vices,” like drink, especially since we read today of individuals suffering cellphone and video gaming addiction.

Second, sin and health taxes are inherently unfair. Proponents of sin taxes argue they are needed to compensate society for externalities. Fine. But how to extract the compensation? Who should pay? There is, as David Leonhardt of the New York Times admitted, no easy answer. Is it fair to tax responsible drinkers for the costs of irresponsible drinkers? And more broadly, if the point of a sin tax is to compensate society collectively, then why does the teetotaler get compensated but the responsible tippler get charged? Both are part of society’s whole.

Third, sin and health taxes are regressive. As Christopher Snowdon of the Institute of Economic Affairs notes, sin taxes “take a greater share of income from the poor than from the rich.” Now, the close reader might note all sales taxes have that sort of regressive effect. True. But the poor are hit more in an absolute sense because the poor drink and smoke more. Additionally, sin taxes have an even harder bite because they are often lumped on top of already-existing sales tax.

If these inherent issues were not enough, taxes on drinks and purported “vices” run into various practical problems.

The worst abusers of alcohol, those who consume the most and inflict the most costs on society, are immune to sin taxes. This ugly truth undermines the contention that higher prices will deter bad behavior.

Speaking of pricing, a sin tax needs be set with some precision lest it foment black markets.

The higher the drinks tax goes, the more attractive untaxed moonshine and illicit intoxicants will be. And don’t be fooled: while your cousin Jeremy might make some fine white lightning, much illicit hooch often is lethal stuff. Illicit alcohol inflicts immense human and social cost.

But that is not how politicians tend to determine the level of sin taxes. Instead, they set tax levels based upon the size budget hole they wish to plug.

As a policy tool, sin taxes come with their own cost: they encourage politicians to hide the true cost of government from the public. Elected officials tax alcohol and the like to fund things wholly unrelated to the externalities they cause, like road repair and government employees’ pensions.

And not to be underplayed is the measurement problem. Calculating the cost of externalities is fantastically complex, not least because it is difficult to differentiate coincidence and causality. For example, say a man with a mental illness punches someone. Police would charge him with assault. But if that same man had two beers before he slugged the person, the incident would be recorded by authorities as an alcohol-related assault. But did the two brews matter?

All of which means sin taxes need to be rethought, not cheerfully repackaged as “health taxes.”

Court rules sick relatives of Hamas members must be allowed entry to Israel
[IsraelTimes] The High Court of Justice rules that five women from Gaza who are purportedly close relatives of Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, members must be allowed to travel to East Jerusalem for life-saving medial treatment.

The majority of the women are said to be suffering from cancer.

Israel banned the relatives of Hamas members from entering the country for medical purposes in an effort to pressure the terrorist organization to return the Israeli civilians and bodies soldiers believed to be held by the group.

But the court determined that while the government was entitled “to take maximum measures” to return the Israelis, it could “cannot justify an arrangement that denies the possibility of a relative of a Hamas member from receiving life-saving medical treatment in Israel.”

insurgents released from military custody.
The old One Round Splitting Headache would reintegrate them for good.
Mr Anthony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary NHRC, gave the suggestion in Maiduguri. Ojukwu said that the call became imperative as those formerly alleged to be associated with insurgency are now faced with stigmatisation and physical threats.
You mean nobody likes them? Tusk tusk.
“There are many cases of communities not ready to receive persons formerly arrested; some were innocent while others were not innocent.
Mainly they're concerned about the chaff who weren't innocent and how to tell them from the wheat.
“The trial of the inmates had commenced in Kainji, Niger state, and very soon, it will commence here in Maiduguri, and those who are found innocent will be released. “But you know our people, once you are arrested, they believe that you are involved,” he said.
Could be because most people will deny things through their teeth to avoid getting what they deserve.
Ojukwu warned that human rights abuses may escalate if such issues were allowed to go unresolved.
Burning villages, killing everyone in sight, kidnapping wimmin and kiddies as sexual playthings aren't human rights abuses?
He urged stakeholders, civil society organisations, state governments and religious leaders, to promote programmes aimed at changing the mindset of people in the communities to enhance protection for returnees.

would reconsider his decision and have his party vote for him in the September 4 presidential election, despite the impasse and tension between the two main opposition parties.

Soon after senior PPP leaders blamed the PML-N and the media for the growing fissures within the opposition 'alliance', and seemed all but resigned to not reaching a consensus over a presidential candidate, Rehman ‐ the opposition's presidential nominee ‐ said he would try and convince Zardari to back him.

"The PPP did not vote in the prime minister's elections, which resulted in Imran Khan

"It will be our effort to take him (Zardari) in confidence and convince him to reconsider his decision so that a joint candidate could contest."

The JUI leader said he "would like to meet Zardari today" to convince him to withdraw PPP nominee Aitzaz Ahsan's candidacy in his favour.

Rehman said the he and PML-N both "wanted the opposition's prime minister candidate to be from the PPP.

"However,

the PPP people themselves said that the PM candidate should be from the PML-N. When a consensus was reached, then [the PPP] decided not to vote, which dispersed the opposition, and turned our hope ‐ our decision to go into the parliament and turn the tables ‐ into disappointment and despair."

Economy
Forget the Permian Basin: This Oil Basin Is Where the Growth Is Right Now
[Motley Fool] With pipeline constraints stalling growth, several oil producers are starting to shift their focus to this emerging oil play.

The Permian Basin, which stretches across western Texas and the southeast corner of New Mexico, is the fastest-growing oil-producing region in the world. Output currently stands at around 3.3 million barrels per day (BPD) and has increased an astounding 800,000 BPD over the past year, which represents more than half of the worldwide production increase. That fast-paced growth, however, is about to come to a screeching halt because there is only enough pipeline capacity to move 3.6 million BPD. While the industry is building new pipelines as fast as it can, the current bottleneck could last until late next year.

Because the Permian expects to slow to a crawl in the next year, it's opening the door for the Powder River Basin (PRB) of Wyoming to emerge as the industry's new growth engine. That gives producers with land in the region a leg up on the competition, which is why investors should put this area on their radar.

Skid how are the American steel companies doing? Are they coming back? I Haven't been following them.

I'm still a big fan of concrete walls. The wall design with the see through base has always disturbed me. Anyone with a rope could (and will) simply toss a rope over and tie it off at the base.

#4  woodrow,

neither employment data nor corporate data are really 'up to date'

looking at the Bureau of Labor Stats info for NAICS 3311 which covers both the milling and the forming companies, the data only go thru 2017 and are only preliminary at that (the data comes from self reporting by private companies and sometimes contains some big errors that have to be investigated)

They do seem to show a stabilization of total employment in that industrial category after years of decline.

IDF fires on car speeding toward Jewish worshipers at West Bank shrine
[IsraelTimes] Paleostinian media says five maimed in shooting and riots break out with youths throwing rocks and fire bombs at soldiers near Joseph's Tomb outside Nablus

IDF troops opened fire on a group of Paleostinians in a vehicle that was speeding toward Jewish worshipers near the West Bank city of Nablus late Monday, the IDF said. Paleostinian media reports said five people were maimed, two seriously.

"Tonight, Jewish worshipers entered Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus. Shortly before their entrance, IDF soldiers came to secure the area," the army said in a statement.

"The troops identified a Paleostinian vehicle that was heading toward them and fired at them," it said, adding that "no soldiers were harmed during the incident."

Earlier Paleostinian media had reported that the troops had fired on a group of armed Paleostinians, with two hospitalized in a serious condition.Pictures posted on social media showed a bloodstained car and the maimed being rushed to a local hospital.

The IDF did not say if the Paleostinians were armed.

The reports said further festivities and riots erupted after the shootout in the vicinity of Joseph’s Tomb with Paleostinian youths throwing rocks and fire bombs and the army was bringing reinforcements into the area.

Joseph’s Tomb is located inside Area A of the West Bank, which is officially under complete Paleostinian Authority control, though the Israeli military conducts activities there. The IDF bars Israeli citizens from entering Area A without prior authorization.

The site is venerated by Jews, Christians and Moslems, and has often been a flashpoint for sectarian violence. Jewish pilgrims are usually only allowed to visit the tomb once a month under heavy-armed guard. During these visits, Paleostinians routinely throw rocks at the troops, and sometimes attack them with Molotov cocktails and gunfire.

IDF confiscates terror incitement materials in Hebron, Nablus

[Ynet] IDF soldiers confiscated overnight Sunday incitement materials such as posters and leaflets in Hebron.

The IDF's Spokesperson's Unit said that equipment used by Hamas, the well-beloved offspring of the Moslem Brotherhood, to prepare the incitement materials was also confiscated in Nablus.

In addition, several Hamas activists who had attempted to rehabilitate Hamas infrastructures in Nablus have been detained in recent weeks, including the printing house's owner where the materials were printed.
