U.S. Justice Ginsburg treated for pancreatic cancer
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Liberal U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has completed a three-week course of radiation therapy to treat a cancerous tumor on her pancreas, a court spokeswoman said on Friday.

The 86-year old justice, who has had previous cancer scares, tolerated the therapy well and no further treatment is required, spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said in a statement.

An abnormality was first detected in July, and the tumor was identified following a biopsy performed on July 31 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

"She canceled her annual summer visit to Santa Fe, but has otherwise maintained an active schedule," Arberg said.

"The tumor was treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body," the spokeswoman added.

#2  Reminds me of the happy things they said about her health earlier this year, right before she missed oral arguments to have tumors removed from her lungs.

Anyone know what kind of reputation MSK has? Wikipedia mentions that they treat a lot of cancer, and Google seems to think that this particular radiation treatment is experimental.

#9  The cancer, the accidents, the still semi-rigorous schedule... I honestly can see her making it past 2020 election season (which is not that far away, honestly), but how much longer? She is not in good health. I really hope for her sake that if she is still alive after the elections she resigns. There is no way she survives to see 2024 pass.

Pakistan Railways Minister ScrambledEgged And Thrashed in London
[FinancialExpress] Sheikh Rashid Ahmad who had earlier called India's decision to revoke special status to Jammu and Kashmir a 'blunder'. He also said that "India was unable to confront Pakistan as it knew that any war between the two Asian countries would not be a conventional war."

Pakistan Railways minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad was on Tuesday pelted with eggs and beaten up by two officials of the Pakistan People's Party in London. The incident took place when Rashid came out of a hotel after attending an awards ceremony in London. Following the incident, two PPP officials in UK - Asif Ali Khan and Samah Namaz - released a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.

The officials said that they assaulted Rashid because he had been using 'abusive language' for PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Pakistan-based Geo TV cited their statement in which they said: "He (Sheikh Rashid) has been using abusive and bad language during interviews against our Chairman Mr Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He should be thankful we only used eggs as a British way of dealing with such uncivilised politician. He started this we ended it."
I suppose he should be glad they didn't know about the leather sap.

Russia launches floating nuke reactor to Arctic
What could go wrong?
[Yahoo] Moscow (AFP) - Russia will launch the world's first floating nuclear reactor and send it on an epic journey across the Arctic on Friday, despite environmentalists warning of serious risks to the region.

Loaded with nuclear fuel, the Akademik Lomonosov will leave the Arctic port of Murmansk to begin its 5,000 kilometre (3,000-mile) voyage to northeastern Siberia.

Nuclear agency Rosatom says the reactor is a simpler alternative to building a conventional plant on ground that is frozen all year round, and it intends to sell such reactors abroad.

But environmental groups have long warned of the dangers of the project, dubbing it a potential "Chernobyl on ice" and a "nuclear Titanic."

Chinese Hackers Target US Cancer Research: Cybersecurity Report
Chinese hacker groups are targeting U.S. cancer research institutes as the regime looks to solve the problem of increasing cancer deaths in the country, according to a report released on Aug. 21.

In recent years, Chinese hackers linked to the regime have attacked organizations involved in cancer research on multiple occasions, according to the report by California-based cybersecurity firm FireEye.

The cyberattacks, the report stated, likely flow from the regime's desire to find a cure for the disease‐the country's No. 1 killer‐and, in turn, stave off its attendant social costs.

"It is likely that an area of unique interest is cancer-related research, reflective of China's growing concern over increasing cancer and mortality rates, and the accompanying national health care costs," the report stated.

Hypocrisy is the ultimate power move. It is a way of demonstrating that one plays by a different set of rules from the ones adhered to by common people. Hypocrisy demonstrates how unaccountable one is to conventional morality.

Such displays work because, unlike wealth, status is inherently subjective. The more of it you are perceived to have, the more of it you actually have.

One dead, two wounded from explosive device in West Bank
[Jpost] A teenage girl was killed and her father and brother were seriously injured on Friday after a grenade was thrown at them from a car near a natural spring near the Israeli settlement of Dolev in the West Bank in what the military is calling a serious terror attack.

Rina Schnerb, 17, of Lod, was critically wounded in the attack at Ein Bubin spring and was treated at the scene before succumbing to her wounds. Her funeral was scheduled for 3.30PM in the Lod cemetery.

Until a person becomes self-aware and is able to make moral choices, a natural diet should be used.

I'd wager that studies linking birth weight and development natural vs. vegetarian vs. vegan pregnant mothers is obvious and well buried.

In fact, I wonder if this malnourishment-chic is a contributor to all these abnormal birth conditions, such as down syndrome, which seem to be increasing.

In short, to take away necessary growth ingredients such as meat protein before a child ends puberty is taking the Monarch Butterfly off the milkweed before the pupal stage.

[Freedom Wire] Since June, millions of Hong Kong residents have flocked to the streets of the city to protest the ruling Hong Kong government and China.

They have cried out for change and a restoration of democracy that the city-state once enjoyed under British colonial rule. In 1997, the British turned Hong Kong over to the Chinese and their freedoms have been steadily eroded ever since.

The citizens of Hong Kong are not going to take it anymore, and they are letting their displeasure be known to the Chinese.

At many of the demonstrations, the protestors are waving flags, and, surprisingly, it isn’t a Chinese or Hong Kong flag. Instead, the flag they are waving as a symbol of their fight for freedom in none other than our own American flag.

America represents a country built on liberty and the dignity of the individual. That is something most of the world has never known, and that is why you see our flag used as a powerful symbol to those yearning for freedom.

For as much as the world likes to complain about America, they change their tune when their personal safety is threatened.

Hong Kong is yet another example of this.

Mexico Risks Recession as Second-Quarter GDP May Be Revised Down

[Yahoo] Economists expect Mexico's second-quarter gross domestic product to be revised slightly down on Friday, with some going as far as to predict a negative number that would mean Latin America's second-largest economy slipped into technical recession this year.

The median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey is for the final GDP reading to show no growth from the previous quarter. That would mean a negative revision to the 0.1% expansion preliminarily reported July 31. The national statistics institute Inegi will release the final figure at 6am on Friday.

Resolution in Pakistan to Export Stray Dogs to China, Philippines
[TheNews] KARACHI: Expressing concerns over the recent surge in cases of rabies in the country, a recommendation entailing export of stray dogs to China and Philippines was presented before the Sindh Assembly by Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani.

The recommendation came in light of a resolution filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legislator Dr Seema Zia based on the alarming rise of rabies' cases in the country which was unanimously approved by the provincial members of the government and opposition.

Zia stated there exists a deficit of anti-rabies vaccines in hospitals.

PTI member Zaman highlighted how Sindh government had earlier vowed to introduce vaccines to curb the reproduction of dogs, however none of that has been implemented as yet.
Chemical castration? The idea has been bandied about over here, but I’m not aware that anyone has actually put it into practice on a mass scale yet.
Zaman went on to state Karachi alone has around 100,000 stray dogs at present.

Taking the resolution of exporting dogs to China and Philippines into consideration, Provincial Minister of Sindh for Health Dr. Azra Pechuho said that the number of rabies cases reported in the entire province is 59, and that the government is already working on introducing anti-rabies vaccines.

The chinese are the world's largest consumers of dog meat. In Duterte country it's becoming rarer. The House of Han consumes like 10-20 million dogs a year ! And Pakistain has like an uncountable number of the poor mutts. It's a trade made in hell.

#2  I'm by no means an animal control expert, but this strikes me as an incredibly stupid idea.
So, they start rounding up stray dogs for transport to China. Before they can be shipped, they will need to be contained somehow. If even one one of those dogs is rabid, it will infect other dogs, who will go on to infect others.
By the time they reach China, most of the dogs will be rabid.
What happens if you eat a rabid dog?

The thousands of dogs eaten in China everyday are not all vaccinated. Because the major cities can insist on the detail, but in the interior, and suburbs, where's the control ? I'm sure they ingest a rabid or diseased one now and then.

I think this is still in the proposal stage though, and when the guys from China hear it they may just turn red and storm out the room. I'll bet even they won't eat a paki dog.

A modified version of a robot nicknamed Baxter, the machine has two mechanical arms, an animated face, as well as sensors to help it analyze patterns and detect if a human user is struggling to lift or move a limb.

"There’s an increasing need for technologies that will allow people to maintain their independence, and through that, satisfy their fundamental human desire for privacy and dignity," Yiannis Demiris, the director of the personal robotic laboratory at Imperial, said in an interview.

BEIJING (AP) ‐ China "will not sit idly by" if the U.S. proceeds with a sale of advanced F-16V fighter jets to Taiwan, a Chinese general said, while warning of other potential countermeasures in addition to punishing foreign firms involved in the deal.

Beijing considered the sale a violation of previous U.S. commitments to China regarding the island it considers its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary, Maj. Gen. Chen Rongdi, chief of the Institute of War Studies at the Academy of Military Sciences, said. He did not elaborate on what additional measures China might take.

"China will not sit idly by," Chen said Thursday at a forum sponsored by China’s official journalists’ association. "Of course, we don’t rule out additional measures."

Beijing has repeatedly said it will levy sanctions against U.S. companies linked to a planned $8 billion sale and demanded Washington cancel it immediately. China has made such threats regarding previous arms sales by the U.S., but they’ve had limited effect because the companies involved are either important to China’s own nascent commercial aviation industry or have little or no business with the country.

Cheap combo pill cuts heart, stroke risks, study finds
LONDON (AP) ‐ A cheap daily pill that combines four drugs cut the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart failure in a large study, suggesting it could be a good way to help prevent heart problems especially in poor countries.

The pills contained two blood pressure drugs, a cholesterol medicine and aspirin. Many people can’t afford or don’t stick with taking so many medicines separately, so doctors think a polypill might help. A previous study testing one in India found it lowered cholesterol and blood pressure. The new study is much larger and gives stronger evidence because it tracked heart attacks, strokes and other problems ‐ not just risk factors.

It involved about 6,800 people in Iran, ages 50-75, some with previous heart problems and others without them. All got advice on healthy lifestyles and half also were given polypills. After five years, 6% of those in the pill group had suffered a heart attack, stroke or heart failure versus 9% of the others. That worked out to a 34% lower risk with the polypill, and a 22% lower risk after researchers took into account other heart drugs that participants were taking.

People who took the polypill most faithfully, at least 70% of the time, had even bigger reductions in heart risks.

The benefit mostly seemed to come from lowering cholesterol; blood pressure didn’t significantly change. Side effects were similar in both groups. Some who developed a cough while on the polypill were switched to another version that substituted one of the four drugs. All of the drugs are cheap generic medicines now.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that his administration was seriously looking at ending the right of citizenship for U.S.-born children of noncitizens and people who immigrated to the United States illegally.

"We’re looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship, where you have a baby on our land, you walk over the border, have a baby - congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen. ... It’s frankly ridiculous," Trump told reporters outside the White House.

Trump has made cracking down on immigration a central plank of his presidency and re-election campaign, but many of the administration’s sweeping rule changes and executive orders have been stymied by the courts.

The Republican president had told Axios news website in October 2018 that he would end "birthright citizenship" through an executive order. Experts have said such a move would run afoul of the U.S. Constitution.

The intent was that certain states could not declare newly liberated slaves as non-citizens and thus denied the rights of citizens. Everything else is 'judicial interpretation'.

This was before we ended up in the latter half of the 20th Century with a million troops and families deployed across the world birthing in Germany, Japan, Italy, etc. There is no logic to those born 'over there' not to be classified as foreign by this definition. If bloodline is not the consideration in births here, then bloodline is not a consideration over there. It's all rationalization, no principle.

Because their parents are not subject to the jurisdiction thereof. By that logic neither are people in this country illegally, so their children should not become citizens at birth. Every other interpretation is just absurd and even the most conservative Supreme Court would reject it.

In any case, China's economic growth has been flagging, and its work force has essentially stopped growing. Post-Tiananmen annual growth, unparalleled in history, ranged from 8% to 14% from 1991 to 2013, but has tailed off, probably below the official 6% level.

Thanks to China’s longtime one-child policy, its working-age population has been declining, down 3% since 2011. For years, one big question about China was whether it would get old before it got rich. The answer seems to be that it has gotten old about halfway up the path. Poverty is way down, but incomes significantly lag those in North America, Western Europe and East Asia, including Taiwan and Hong Kong. Meanwhile, just as the United States once lost low-skill manufacturing jobs, so China is losing them now.

Professor Legutko recently related his perspective on the experience, revealing that the college not only caved to the disruptive and disrespectful students, but legitimized their conduct! Further, the students have set out to proscribe future discourse that might again ignite their sociopathic anarchy.

Last year, our nation's children walked out of high schools to complain about school shootings. Encouraged by teachers and principals, these students proclaimed that they would finally end school violence by effecting changes to national gun laws. Many have praised these optimistic youths; others have condemned them. Both approaches are wrong.

Addressing the rebellion of America's youth in the 1960s, writer Wendell Berry remarked that "this generation is as subject as any other to intelligent scrutiny and judgment, and as deserving of honest criticism. It has received much approbation and condemnation, very little criticism" ("Discipline and Hope," 1970). Mr. Berry argued that the '60s youths correctly criticized their parents' world but that without guidance, they eventually embraced those same values in new forms. Thus, the Flower Children took root in Silicon Valley, where they now grow bald while the military complex and industrial waste flourish.

Presidential spokesperson Sediq Sediqqi said "Government of Afghanistan strongly condemns Pakistain’s recent missile shelling onto the Afghan soil."

The local officials in Kunar have said the Pak military have fired hundreds of rounds of artillery shells on various districts of the province during the recent days.

Kunar governor Abdul Satar Mirzakwal has said the shells landed in Dangam, Shaltan and Nari districts of Kunar in the past three days.

Mirzakwal further added that the shellings did not inflict casualties on local residents but the incursion has damaged the houses and properties of some residents of the province.

Taliban Planning To Disrupt Balkh Security: Police Chief

[ToloNews] Balkh Police Chief said the Taliban will be prevented from infiltrating in any district of the province.

Balkh which was relatively calm compared to other provinces in the north has been faced with rising threats over the past few months as officials said the Taliban militants are trying to infiltrate the northern province from neighboring regions.

The Taliban fighters have flocked to Balkh from neighboring Faryab, Sar-e-Pul, Kunduz and Jawzjan provinces, Balkh Police Chief Gen. Mohammad Afzal Faez told reporters on Thursday.

Mr. Faez said that at least 40 Taliban fighters were killed in clashes with Afghan security forces in Zari district of the province over the past two days.

At least 12 security force members have lost their lives while battling the insurgents, Mr. Faez said.

“The enemy has the plan to overrun one or two districts of Balkh at any cost to show to their bosses that they have a presence here,” Mr. Faez said.

Zari, Sholagara and Chahar Kant are among the key districts in Balkh which have witnessed security threats over the past few months.

“No area has collapsed to the Taliban and will not in the future,” the Commander of Afghan Army’s 209 Shaheen Corps, Gen. Mohammad Wali Ahmadzai, said.

“Despite consecutive calls by MPs, Balkh Provincial Council, local officials, and the police headquarters, the Ministry of Interior did not send us arms,” head of Balkh Provincial Council, Mohammad Afzal Hadid, said.

In recent months, violence also reported on some key highways connecting to other provinces.

Reports say the Taliban often establish checkpoints along the highway which has made it difficult for government employees to commute on these highways.

This comes despite efforts by senior negotiators from the US and the Taliban who preparing for a ninth round of peace talks in Doha aimed at finding a political settlement to the current turmoil in the country.

Last militant lines collapse in southern Idlib, civilians to be let leave
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army scored a new advance along the Hama-Idlib axis on Thursday, seizing several sites from the last jihadist rebels in the area.

According to a field report from this front, the Syrian Army began the day by capturing the hilltop of Tal Sayyed and the nearby village of Sayyed.

Following this advance, the Syrian Army would capture several other areas along the Idlib-Hama axis, including Tal Huwayz, al-Bashir Driving School, and Wadi al-Anz.

A source near the front-lines told al-Masdar News that most of the Death Eaters that once controlled this area fled north before the Syrian Arab Army closed the pocket.

He added that several Death Eaters are still in the pocket, but most are situated near the Ottoman Turkish Armed Forces at the observation post in the town of Morek.

Since the start of the week, the jihadist rebels have suffered several setbacks at the hands of the Syrian Army; this includes the loss of the strategic city of Khan Sheikhoun.

Damascus to let civilians flee rebel-held Idlib

[IsraelTimes] Damascus says it is opening a corridor for civilians to leave the rebel-held northwestern region of Idlib, where government bombardment has killed hundreds since late April.

The announcement came a day after government forces recaptured the strategic Idlib province town of Khan Sheikhun from jihadists and allied rebels.

Damascus has opened such corridors out of other rebel bastions in the past as a prelude to retaking them either by force or through negotiated surrenders.

Yale Computer Scientist David Gelernter Abandons Darwinism (video)
[Breitbart] Renowned Yale computer scientist David Gelernter claims that he is abandoning Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Gelernter, who formerly served as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, published a column earlier this year detailing his move away from evolutionary theory. The column, which was titled "Giving Up Darwin," provides Gelernter’s arguments against Darwinism.
Darwin’s theory predicts that new life forms evolve gradually from old ones in a constantly branching, spreading tree of life. Those brave new Cambrian creatures must therefore have had Precambrian predecessors, similar but not quite as fancy and sophisticated. They could not have all blown out suddenly, like a bunch of geysers. Each must have had a closely related predecessor, which must have had its own predecessors: Darwinian evolution is gradual, step-by-step. All those predecessors must have come together, further back, into a series of branches leading down to the (long ago) trunk.

But those predecessors of the Cambrian creatures are missing. Darwin himself was disturbed by their absence from the fossil record. He believed they would turn up eventually. Some of his contemporaries (such as the eminent Harvard biologist Louis Agassiz) held that the fossil record was clear enough already, and showed that Darwin’s theory was wrong. Perhaps only a few sites had been searched for fossils, but they had been searched straight down. The Cambrian explosion had been unearthed, and beneath those Cambrian creatures their Precambrian predecessors should have been waiting‐and weren’t. In fact, the fossil record as a whole lacked the upward-branching structure Darwin predicted.

A group of scientists, including Gelernter and Meyer, sat down to discuss evolution this summer in a conversation that was hosted by Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.

actually, the normative view is that in about a 10 million year period early in the Cambrian (about 500M years ago) there was such a 'blow up' and that's why it is called the Cambrian Explosion

there are no accepted causal theories of why this happened and for this to have happened the rate of successful mutation would have to have been at least 4 orders of magnitude greater than anything measured -- those problems make the 'explosion' a tough one to accept for many

#6  If I understand correctly when partition happened the leadership of Kashmir wanted India but the bulk of the population was/is Muslim. Is that correct? I favor India and think Kashmir is better off as part of India but it seems their claim isn't all that great.

Long ago India should have granted Kashmir and Punjab as independent/allies to act as buffer states between Pakistan and India.

If they did that Baluchistan would have wanted to join up as well and the Punjab in Pakistan might have preferred joining Punjab state. Pakistan would have spent all her time keeping things together and India would have had a number of small states on their border.

Of course the risk is that some other parts of India might have wanted to go independent as well but I *think* the rest of India is pretty solid.

#7  Ruprecht, at the time of partition even Pakistan was 24% hindus. The kingdom of Kashmir, ruled by a hindu Rajah was never formally colonized and retained it's status. There were as many hindus in Kashmir as muslims. Besides, the culture of the region was more on the lines of the Sufi mysticism and a peaceful cohesion of hinduism and islam Yes. Unbelievable but it was just so.
During partition, most of the sunni muslims from northern Indian states (not Kashmir) were the ones who went and settled in Pakistain. There was a genocide and the exodus of millions of non-muslims from the new islamic republic.

Kashmir was yet independent and did not wish to cede to either nation, but Pakistain attacked them to annex it in the first Kashmir War . India had to assist and hold the bloody place without any final resolution until the tiresome king was dead. After that there were more hindus and sikhs in Kashmir than muslims for a while.

It wasn't until the late 70s and through the 80s that Pakistain, well funded and emboldened by the CIA's largesse during Op Cyclone a poorly written love affair which started with Carter began their adventure with supporting jihad outside their shithole. They began a bloodbath and covert replacement of the population of Kashmir, killing and chasing out hindus, christians and sikhs they infiltrated salafi muslims and militant clans in the valley.

By 1989, there were no more non-muslims in Kashmir. By the late 90s there were burnt christian schools, shariah enforcers, terror schools, the works. The aim of Pakistain was to try to destabilize and take India piecemeal, using means and resources achieved through the never-ending western aid supply. Lest you wonder what we were doing with our thumbs up our asses all this while, India was under weak leftist, liberal Govts all those years - the same jig of diversity, appeasement, corruption, incompetence.

So that's the concise history of the current demographic.

[IsraelTimes] Head of Popular Mobilization Forces says his deputy was voicing his own opinion in blaming Jerusalem and DC for recent attacks on its bases.

The head of Iraq’s paramilitary Shiite forces, supported by Iran, appeared Thursday to walk back a statement made by his deputy, who blamed Israeli drones and said the US was responsible for a series of attacks on bases run by the militia.

Faleh al-Fayyadh said that the Wednesday statement by his deputy, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, didn’t represent the view of the mainly Shiite paramilitary group known as Popular Mobilization Forces ‐ or that of the Iraqi government.

Al-Fayyadh’s statement alleged the attacks on the bases over the past weeks "were the result of an act organized by a foreign side," without naming that side.

The statement highlighted divisions within the Popular Mobilization Forces, which is mostly run by the deputy, al-Muhandis, a military commander known for his anti-American sentiments.

The rare statement by al-Muhandis had said the group had accurate information showing the US brought in four Israeli drones this year to work as part of the US fleet in Iraq and target militia positions in Iraq.

"We announce that the United States is ultimately responsible for what happened and we will hold it responsible for what will happen as of today. We have no choice but to defend ourselves and our bases with the weapons at our disposal," said the statement.

The conflicting statements came after an Iraqi government report obtained by The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Wednesday said a massive explosion at a munitions depot run by an Iranian-backed militia near Baghdad last week was caused by a dronezap. The report outlined the conclusions of a fact-finding committee ordered by the government to investigate the August 12 explosion at the al-Saqr military base.

It said the blast was caused by a dronezap that sparked a huge fire and ruled out earlier suggestions that it was caused by an electrical short circuit or faulty storage of munitions that allowed them to overheat in sweltering summer temperatures.

The blast at the al-Saqr, or "Falcon," base killed one civilian, maimed 28 and damaged nearby homes, echoing across Baghdad. The base houses a weapons depot for the Iraqi federal police and the mainly Shiite militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces. Al-Saqr was among a string of explosions that hit militia bases and munitions depots over the past several weeks. The deadliest, a July 19 blast, was blamed on a drone that hit a base in Amirli, northern Iraq, killing two Iranians and causing a huge fire. The most recent explosion came on Tuesday night, at a base north of Baghdad.

Speculation among media and officials as to who is behind the earth-shattering kabooms has ranged among a number of possible perpetrators, including Israel, the United States or rival Iraqi factions.

An American official said the US has no evidence or credible intelligence that Israel was behind the two most recent blasts ‐ on Tuesday or on August 12. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the issue.

Faleh al-Fayyadh, who also serves as the government's national security adviser, issued the statement after an emergency meeting with Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi late on Wednesday.

"Preliminary investigations" found the incidents were "an external, premeditated act," he said.

"The investigations will continue until the responsible entities are accurately identified to be able to take the appropriate stances."

Just hours earlier, the Hashed's deputy commander Abu Mehdi al-Muhandis, whose virulent anti-Americanism as a militia leader earned him a U.S. terror blacklisting, had been unequivocal in blaming Washington.

A local military source said on Wednesday that Syrian troops had now completely surrounded the towns of Latmenah, Kafr Zita, Latmeen and Morek in the north of Hama province, which borders Idlib to the southwest.

The Idlib province has remained the last turban stronghold in Syria. Being under control of the Nusra Front since 2015, the province has been accepting holy warriors from other regions which were already liberated by the Syrian army.

[DAWN] South Korea will scrap an intelligence-sharing pact with Japan amid an intensifying dispute over history and trade, South Korea's presidential office said on Thursday.

The decision was made after a meeting of the presidential National Security Council. The deal was due to be automatically renewed on Saturday, unless either side decided to cancel it.

Japan created a "grave change" in the environment for bilateral security cooperation by removing South Korea's fast-track export status, said Kim You-geun, a deputy director of the National Security Council.

#10  I just read that German banks are looking at negative interest rates for loans and mortgages — so they will pay the buyer rather than the other way round. And of course, if they’re losing money on every loan, they aren’t going to be handing out interest for savings accounts and bonds, nor dividends either. The discussion was around why that inverted thingy doesn’t matter — American returns are better and safer than anywhere else in the world, so international investors will continue sending us their money.

Mediterranean migrant rescue ship running low on food: Doctors Without Borders
[DW] There are 356 migrants colonists on the Ocean Viking ship, which has not been allowed to dock by Italian and Maltese authorities for two weeks. The vessel picked up several groups of migrants colonists but is running out of food.

The Doctors Without Borders (MSF) charity group said Thursday that its rescue ship is running out of food supplies for 356 migrants colonists.

The Norwegian-flagged Ocean Viking ship, which MSF operates with another aid group, SOS Mediterranee, has picked up several groups of migrants colonists since it set sail in early August.

"Only five days of standard food rations left," said MSF logistician onboard the Ocean Viking. "Our medical team is increasingly concerned about a rapid deterioration in the state of people's mental health," the group said on Twitter.

Thousands flee north Nigeria towns amid Boko Haram attacks

Gubio Local Council Chairman Zanna Modu says that soldiers repelled the bully boyz on August 11 in the town north of Maiduguri, but withdrew last week. He said bully boyz took over Wednesday, setting houses and public buildings on fire. No casualty toll was yet available.

Another local official Usman Zannah said Boko Haram also took over Magumeri which is also north of Maiduguri. Zannah said bully boyz are taking advantage of troop withdrawals from strategic locations.

Nigerian military authorities have not given comment on these latest attacks.

Boko Haram’s 10-year insurgency has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.

on an ammunition depot in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, belonging to the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), is a declaration of war against Iraq, and Baghdad should openly respond to violations of its illusory sovereignty, Iraqi politician and a PMF official, Ahmed Asadi, said on Thursday.

"Israel’s intervention into the sphere of our national interests is a declaration of war against Iraq, its people, illusory sovereignty. The silence on the aggression is not a rational position ... We must take measures at the regional and international levels to resist the destruction of our airspace and military capabilities," Asadi said in a statement.

He added that Iraq may respond to Israeli actions, since "they wanted an open war, and our national duty is to stop this war in the form of an open response."

The remarks came after a blast hit the ammo depot in Baghdad on Monday, killing one civilian and leaving dozens of others injured. Though the causes of the earth-shattering kaboom remain unknown, the incident has given rise to a number of theories, including that Israel might have been behind the airstrike.

These explosions at the facilities, which belong to Iran-backed militias, are fueling speculations that Iraq is gradually being sucked into the escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Abu Mahdi Mohandes, deputy chairman of PMF, said earlier this week, citing leaked intelligence data, that the United States had allowed four Israeli drones to operate in Iraqi airspace and target facilities belonging to Shia militias.

Palestinians agree to some tax transfers from Israel as cash crunch mounts

[IsraelTimes] PA to take in around NIS 2 billion in money from fuel taxes while Ramallah attempts to deal with shortfalls amid dispute over terror payouts.

The Paleostinian Authority, in deep financial trouble since February over a tax crisis, said Thursday it had accepted a partial payment of just over half a billion dollars after reaching an agreement with Israel.

"An agreement was reached a few days ago with the Israeli side for transferring duties on oil and fuel which the Paleostinian Authority bought in Israel to the amount of around two billion shekels ($568 million)," Civil Affairs Minister Hussein al-Sheikh told AFP.

Israel exempts Palestinians from fuel tax to ease economic burden

[IsraelTimes] Israel and the Paleostinian Authority agreed to exempt the Paleostinians from paying taxes on fuel, senior PA official Hussein al-Sheikh tweets.

The agreement, if implemented, is likely to give the PA considerable economic relief as it confronts a major financial crisis.

Sheikh, however, says that the deal does not mark the conclusion of the PA’s current financial woes.

"This does not mean the financial crisis is over. Billions that belong to us are still being held by Israel," Sheikh says.

Former Khamenei supporter sentenced to 13 years for speaking out
[THEBAGHDADPOST] The Appeals Court has upheld a preliminary court verdict against a former supporter of the Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for disseminating dissident information.

Based on the new ruling, the civil activist and retired university lecturer in the city of Mashhad, Kamal Jafari Yazdi, should serve a minimum of ten years of his thirteen-year sentence.

A judge in the northeastern city of Mashhad had initially sentenced Jafari Yazdi in April to ten years in prison for "forming an illegal group against national security," two years for "insulting the Supreme Leader," and one year for "propaganda against the regime."

In an interview with radio Farda August 20, Mr. Yazdi confirmed the Appeals Court decision about his sentence. He read out the charges that include interviews with foreign based "hostile media". This term applies to Persian-language broadcasters such as Radio Farda and the BBC.

In July, Jafari Yazdi joined thirteen other Iranian activists who signed a letter calling on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down and pave the way for a new political order to replace Iran.

On August 10 the co-signatories of the letter showed up at the court in Mashhad to express solidarity with Yazdi and they were arrested. There are now on hunger strike.

Iranian law allows courts to sentence citizens to prison for the simple act of creating online groups, pages or channels, as well as for their personal online posts.

Gaddafi-loyal commander killed by pro-Haftar forces
[Libya Observer] Military sources have disclosed that pro-Khalifa Haftar gang killed Khalid al-Wershiffani and three of his lovers companions - including Kamal Lembarki - in Souq al-Sabit area that is under the control of al-Kani militia which is loyal to Haftar.

The gang killed al-Wershiffani by five gunshots and the bodies of him and his lover companions are at the Bani Walid hospital's morgue.

According to the source, al-Habotat gang from Wershiffana and is loyal to al-Kani militia carried out the murder.

Last May, al-Kani militia carried out a similar murder against former regime loyalists such as Brigadier General Masoud al-Dawi and in last June Mohammed Eshtiwi - prominent leader at Tribes Army.

Haftar has also tried to assassinate Saif al-Islam Qadaffy by bribing the brigade that was guarding him in Zintan, where he was detained since 2011.

Multan court rejects request by Qandeel Baloch's parents to pardon her killers

on Thursday rejected a request by the parents of slain social media star Qandeel Baloch to pardon her brothers, who are accused of killing her.

Baloch's brother Waseem had strangled her to death in the name of "honour" at their house in 2016. He later confessed to have killed her because she allegedly "brought dishonour to the Baloch name" with her risque videos and statements posted on social media. Her brother Aslam Shaheen was also nominated in the case.

The social media celebrity's parents, Muhammad Azeem and Anwar Bibi, had on Wednesday submitted an affidavit in the local trial court, saying they had forgiven the killers and the case against their sons should be thrown out.

They had argued that since the Anti-Honour Killing Laws (Criminal Amendment Bill), 2015 ‐ which bars pardoning killers in such cases ‐ was passed several months after the murder of their daughter, it could not be applied in this case. They had also denied the allegation that Baloch was killed for the sake of honour.

As the affidavit was taken up by the model court today, Baloch's parents informed District and Sessions Judge Imran Shafi that they had forgiven their sons "in the name of Allah".

The judge asked them whether they were only pardoning their sons and not all the accused in the murder case, to which the parents responded in affirmative.

Judge Shafi informed them that he would decide their request after examining whether law grants them the right to pardon the killers or not.

"Do you realise what impact your pardon will have on the other accused in the case?" the judge went on to ask, addressing Baloch's parents.

The court later dismissed Baloch's parents' application to pardon their sons, with the judge saying the case regarding murder in the name of 'honour' would be decided once the testimonies of all witnesses have been recorded.

The accused in the case, including holy man Mufti Abdul Qavi, were present in the hearing today. After Qavi informed the court that he leads prayers in Jhang on Fridays, the court adjourned the hearing of the case until August 24, when the statements of more witnesses will be recorded.

In January 2017, the Muzaffarabad (Multan) police had lodged a First Information Report under Section 213 of the Pakistain Penal Code against Baloch's parents on the complaint of assistant sub-inspector Allah Ditta, the investigation officer, in which it was stated that Baloch's parents recorded their statements in court on Jan 19 and a few days later, on Jan 25, they submitted an affidavit. He said they had retracted their earlier statement against their elder son Aslam and there was a likelihood that they would do so in the case of the main accused Waseem, Baloch's younger brother, as well.

The IO further stated that he had seen Baloch's parents receiving an envelope (allegedly containing cash) from Aslam Shaheen outside the court. Aslam was quoted as saying at the time: "I have fulfilled their demand. Now they should record their statement in the court in my favour."

He added: "When the enemy launches a missile against us, we cannot give a speech and say: 'Mr. Rocket, please do not hit our country and our innocent people. Rocket-launching sir, if you can please hit a button and self-destroy the missile in the air.'"

On Wednesday, Iran's state TV reported that the Bavar-373 is able to recognise up to 100 targets at a same time and confront them with six different weapons.
