Trump revokes security clearance for ex-CIA chief John Brennan
[NY Post] President Donald Trump on Wednesday yanked the security clearance of former CIA Chief John Brennan ‐ one of the president's loudest critics on national security.

In a statement from the president read by administration spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the president accused Brennan of using his access to the nation's secrets for personal benefit

Iraq
More Improvised Weaponized Drones Emerge In Iraq, Now With The Police (videos)
[Funker] As we recently saw, ISIS is using drones fitted with 40mm grenades, now called ISIS40 drones, to effectively engage coalition forces in and around Mosul. In one of their videos, they attempted to edit in, and pass off as authentic, a small fixed-wing, remote aircraft as the drone responsible. However, based on the static hovering, and in-place turning, we concluded that the actual drone used would have to be a multi rotor remote helicopter.

Afghanistan
101st Airborne, US Special Forces Called Into Ghazni Battle
[Funker] To keep the city of Ghazni from totally collapsing into Taliban control, the Pentagon has sent units from the 101st Airborne Division, 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, as well as US Army Special Forces "Green Berets" to assist the Afghan National Army in stomping out the attacking insurgents.

The 101st Airborne Apache attack helicopters have been pummeling Taliban positions for days, and combat "advisor" troops currently of the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade are augmenting Afghan National Army units on the streets of Ghazni.

The arrival of the American troops immediately turned the tide of the fight as mixed reports indicate that the Taliban insurgents have been pushed out of the city into the outlying suburbs and rural areas. The NATO-led Operation Resolute Support is claiming that the American airstrikes alone have killed more than 220 Taliban since Friday.

#1  Freedom is not free - a good man already paid the ultimate price: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/afghanistan/article-6057071/US-commando-dies-explosion-southern-Afghanistan.html

I feel that the entire population of 7th Century Afghanistan is not worth the blood of one US Army Private - and that we have no business shedding blood and spending treasure in that hell-hole.

All US casualties in Afghanistan died in vain. It pains me to say it - but it is true. They do not call that accursed place "The Graveyard of Empires" for nothing.

#4  What do we do to keep the jihadi problem from metastasizing, gentlemen, given that the borders of Pakistan and Iran are both porous and both countries are gateways to the West? Afghanistan is for the Afghans to fix, but how do we keep them from providing a safe space in which transnational jihadi groups can grow big enough to infect the rest of the world? The Viet Kong were beaten in Viet Nam, but they had safe havens across the border from which they burst out to overrun the country.

Afghanistan and the Pashtun border regions host the Afghan Taliban, the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), the original Al Qaeda cadres, ISIS, Uighurs, Chechens, etc. (someone else would be better able to lay out the list of hard boy inhabitants of the area — I can’t keep them all in mind). And they trade personnel and training like boys trade baseball cards. Even though Pakistan has started building a fence along the Durand Line, odds are it will never be finished, and even the finished bits will not be impervious to bribes, while Iran welcomes those who would be their tools, given a little support. Some of the bin Laden family and their friends have been sheltering in Iran since the excitements at Tora Bora.

#5  I agree with TW and Besoeker, and propose that the US withdraw from Afganistan with a simple warning that if any entity or government allows a re-establishment of terrorist havens that area will be reduced to rubble, all signs of civilization will be destroyed, and that neither aid nor reconstruction will be allowed. If they want a no man's land, then give it to them. I don't want my great-grandchildren to learn how to spell Afganistan.

#13  The Old British Colonial Policy was called "Butcher And Bolt"

I believe the Israelis talk about mowing the grass, For them it used to be every 10-15 years, as each generation of kids became old enough to self-organize, but Hamas in Gaza seems to require about a doubled tempo.

if any entity or government allows a re-establishment of terrorist havens

The havens have been in place in Afghanistan for decades, brutotejano. The fighting between the Taliban and ISIS in several provinces over the past week or so has led to several hunded deaths, suggesting a good many more bad guys remain unkilled. If the Afghan government were capable of dealing with the problem, they would have done so, but they are very far from that at this point.

#14  fwiw, Operation Enduring Freedom was declared over in December 2014 and we are now in Operation Freedom's Sentinal, below are quotes from Obama and Hagel

----------------------
"Today's ceremony in Kabul marks a milestone for our country," Obama said. "For more than 13 years, ever since nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken from us on 9/11, our nation has been at war in Afghanistan. Now, thanks to the extraordinary sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, our combat mission in Afghanistan is ending, and the longest war in American history is coming to a responsible conclusion."

"At the end of this year," Hagel said, "as our Afghan partners assume responsibility for the security of their country, the United States officially concludes Operation Enduring Freedom. … In 2015, we begin our follow-on mission -- Operation Freedom's Sentinel -- to help secure and build upon the hard-fought gains of the last 13 years.

CA DMV a Hot Mess, Undermining Confidence in Big California Projects

One huge bottleneck is the driver license exam area.. not near as fast as the 'hand written" tests.

Southwest Air Limits Emotional-Support Animals to Dogs, Cats, and smallish horses
[Bloomberg] Southwest Airlines Co. will limit customers to only one dog or cat as an emotional-support animal, changing its policy after a biting incident on a flight.

The carrier follows larger rivals that had altered policies for animals on board as numbers soared for passengers claiming they rely on them. Problems with animals, including a child nipped on a Southwest plane, also have climbed, as have the types of creatures brought on aircraft.

Effective Sept. 17, Southwest will limit emotional-support animals to dogs or cats, and one per person. The animals must remain in a carrier or on a leash, and owners must present a current letter from a medical doctor or licensed mental-health professional on the day of the flight, the Dallas-based airline said in a statement Tuesday.

Beyond emotional-support animals, only dogs, cats and, on occasion, miniature horses will be allowed as psychiatric-support animals, Southwest said. They must be individually trained to perform a task or work for a person with mental-health disability.

The airline won’t allow unusual or exotic animals on board.

Gowdy: 'Unbelievable' That DOJ's Bruce Ohr 'Would Insert Himself Into an Ongoing Investigation'
BLUF:
[CNS] "It's unbelievable that a prosecutor would insert himself into an ongoing investigation for which he had nothing to do," Gowdy said.

According to Gowdy, "Bruce Ohr worked for the Department of Justice. He had nothing to do with the Russia investigation other than he inserted himself by having contact with Christopher Steele."

Ohr "even had contact with Chris Steele after the FBI terminated its relationship with Chris Steele." Gowdy noted that one branch of the Justice Department -- the FBI -- decided Steele was "not even fit to be an informant," yet a high-ranking Justice Department official, Bruce Ohr, was continuing to funnel information from Steele to the FBI.

Family of the late Michael Clarke Duncan suspicious of fiancée Omarosa in 2013
[USA Today 8 April 2013] Green Mile actor Michael Clarke Duncan died seven months ago, but as in many celebrity deaths, the battle for his estate rages on. According to TMZ, the family of the imposing actor is eyeing his fiancée, reality TV star Omarosa Manigault, with some suspicion.

Duncan's sister Judy tells TMZ that a lawyer is investigating a change to the actor's will last year that made Manigault the main beneficiary. Judy adds that she believes Duncan made the changes while ill because around that time he had been slurring his words and stumbling.
He was.....'physically ill', 'just this side of functionally illiterate'
Moreover, Judy accuses Manigault of fixating on Duncan's money after he was on life support after the heart attack in July 2012 that led to his death in September. And Judy says Manigault sold some of his personal belongings without consulting the family.

Never one to bite her tongue, Manigault fired back at Judy and her claims, telling TMZ that Duncan's sister is the problem.
She's... "unhinged."
"I don't control the estate or the finances and Judy knows it," she says. "If you saw all of her e-mails and texts to me you would see that she is just trying to get money from me, and threatened going to press if I did not give it to her, and that is a crime."

Prof. Avital Ronell And The Lie of The Feminist Academy
h/t Instapundit
...This wasn’t one of the faux Title IX cases of post-hoc regret, but the real deal. Ronell was grad student Nimrod Reitman’s doctoral adviser. He came to NYU because of her, to study under her. And from the start of his graduate studies, she turned him into her boy toy upon the implicit threat of destroying his career. And it continued throughout his graduate studies, as proven by Ronell’s emails.

Professor Avital Ronell used her academic power over Reitman to coerce him to be her sexual plaything for years, or else.* And the feminist academy, via Judith Butler and myriad other signatories to a letter, demand that NYU lay off Ronell, or else. And it’s incredible to believe that the finding of responsibility wasn’t the impetus for the threat letter. Yet, these scholars sought to coerce a university into silence and impotence to conceal Ronell’s conduct.

...Diane Davis, chair of the department of rhetoric at the University of Texas-Austin, who also signed the letter to the university supporting Professor Ronell, said she and her colleagues were particularly disturbed that, as they saw it, Mr. Reitman was using Title IX, a feminist tool, to take down a feminist.

America Is Plagued by Privilege, but It's Not What You Think
h/t Instapundit
We hear a lot about white privilege from liberals, but no one on the Left wants to talk about the most glaring privilege infesting our nation today: celebrity privilege.

Let’s start with football players who use company time to protest ‐ what? I’m not quite sure what they’re protesting and what it has to do with football or the flag, but they’re out there raising their fists and bending their knees. While they’re being paid by their bosses to play football and abide by team rules, they inject their politics into the sporting experience and alienate customers.

Only someone with celebrity privilege could get away with that. The lowly office worker can’t speak his mind whenever and however he wants. The cashier at Chipotle can’t spout off about his political views and drive customers out the door. The assembly line worker can’t walk off the job to protest his latest beef with society. If he did, he’d get fired in a heartbeat ‐ justifiably so.

Regular, hard-working Americans who remain faceless in the crowd don’t get the luxury of saying whatever they want to say ‐ because they’re not celebrities. They labor in the shadows while multi-millionaires add to their piles of gold.

"[T]here seems to have been an actual decline in rational thinking. The United States had become a place where entertainers and professional athletes were mistaken for people of importance. They were idolized and treated as leaders; their opinions were sought on everything and they took themselves just as seriously-after all, if an athlete is paid a million or more a year, he knows he is important ... so his opinions of foreign affairs and domestic policies must be important, too, even though he proves himself to be ignorant and subliterate every time he opens his mouth."

Update on the 60 Separate Defamation Lawsuits Against the SPLC Under Consideration
h/t Instapundit
Leaders of Christian organizations the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) unfairly labels as "hate groups" told PJ Media that a massive legal onslaught is headed toward the SPLC ‐ and it could involve as many as sixty separate lawsuits in different states around the country. Rather than one big defamation lawsuit, the left-wing attack dog will face a scattershot approach.

"What we're considering is not a class-action lawsuit," Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, a Christian nonprofit branded a "hate group" by the SPLC and currently suing the charity navigation site GuideStar, told PJ Media on Monday. "These are individual lawsuits that we're looking at, not class action."

He explained that the roughly 60 organizations considering the suit intend to "make the SPLC defend itself all over the country."

"The people we're talking to are looking at individual lawsuits ‐ could be up to sixty but definitely quite a number of cases," Staver explained.

The forces of Evil had planted the bomb and were looking to detonate it using a remote control but it was discovered and defused by the security forces during a patrol in the area.

In the meantime, the Criminal Investigation Department said a similar improvised bomb was planted close to the security commandment of Qarabagh.

The source further added that the bomb was discovered and defused at around 7am local time today before the forces of Evil manage to detonate it.

Christian Baker Again Under Fire for Refusing Transgender Cake Despite Supreme Court Win
[PJ] In June, the Supreme Court decided the case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, issuing a powerful rebuke to the Colorado Civil Rights Commission for its "religious hostility" toward Christian baker Jack Phillips. Phillips had refused to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding, and the commission had compared his decision to religious arguments in favor of the Ku Klux Klan and Nazism.

Now, the commission is again going after Phillips for declining to create a custom cake — this time a cake celebrating transgenderism. On Tuesday night, Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the Christian law firm that represented Phillips before the Supreme Court and helped him gain an important 7-2 victory, filed a federal lawsuit against the commission to forestall action against Phillips.

"The state of Colorado is ignoring the message of the U.S. Supreme Court by continuing to single out Jack for punishment and to exhibit hostility toward his religious beliefs," ADF Senior Vice President of U.S. Legal Division Kristen Waggoner declared in a statement. “Even though Jack serves all customers and simply declines to create custom cakes that express messages or celebrate events in violation of his deeply held beliefs, the government is intent on destroying him—something the Supreme Court has already told it not to do."

Egypt Summons Palestinian Groups For Israeli Truce, Unity Talks
[Jpost] Representatives of various Paleostinian factions in the Gazoo Strip headed to Cairo on Tuesday for talks with Egyptian intelligence officials on the possibility of reaching a truce agreement with Israel, and ending the Hamas, one of the armed feet of the Moslem Brüderbung millipede,-Fatah power struggle.

The visit coincides with unconfirmed reports in the Arab media that the Paleostinian factions and Israel are close to reaching a long-term cease-fire agreement under the auspices of Egypt and the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
The faction representatives were invited by the Egyptian authorities in the context of Cairo’s continued effort to avoid a military confrontation between Hamas and Israel, and persuade Hamas and Fatah to agree to the formation of a unity government.

Key Gaza crossing set to fully reopen as calm along border holds
[IsraelTimes] Army says Kerem Shalom will return to full operations at 9 a.m., Gazook fishing zone will be extended to 9 nautical miles

Israel was set to reopen the Kerem Shalom Crossing into Gazoo and extend the Strip’s permitted fishing zone on Wednesday morning, after several days of rare calm along Israel’s restive border with the enclave.

The move was announced by the military Wednesday morning, a day after Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said he would ease the restrictions if calm along the border continued to hold.

"Maintaining the quiet is first and foremost in the interest of Gazoo residents," Liberman said Tuesday, after meeting with senior defense officials.

Israel closed the Kerem Shalom Crossing, the main goods crossing into the beleaguered Paleostinian enclave, on July 9 to everything but food and medical equipment, following weeks of violence along the border, including arson attacks.

Israel also severely restricted the Gazoo fishing zone, a significant source of revenue for the beleaguered enclave, forcing Paleostinian fisherman to remain within three nautical miles (3.5 miles) of the coast.

Fuel and gasoline shipments into the Strip have been allowed at some points and frozen at others, depending upon the intensity of attacks from the Strip.

The army said Wednesday morning, Kerem Shalom was returning to full operations and Gazook fishermen would be allowed to travel nine nautical miles (10.4 miles) off the coast, as per orders issued by Liberman following the meeting.

The crossing is expected to open at 9 a.m.

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Kamil Abu Rokon, a representative from the Shin Bet security service and other senior defense officials took part in the meeting, Liberman’s office said.

While defense officials were meeting, four incendiary balloons launched from the Gazoo Strip landed outside Kibbutz Erez in the Sha’ar Hanegev region of southern Israel, though they failed to spark a fire, according to a local government spokesperson.

Over 7,000 acres of land have been burned by incendiary kites and balloons from the Strip since March 30, causing millions of shekels in damages, according to Israeli officials.

This week, Israeli authorities noted a significant drop in incendiary kite and balloon attacks from the Paleostinian enclave.

Firefighters extinguish day’s lone blaze caused by incendiary balloon from Gaza

[IsraelTimes] Firefighters extinguish Tuesday’s only blaze caused by an incendiary balloon flown from the Gazoo Strip that fell near Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a front man for the Israeli Fire and Rescue Services says.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russia deploys police to help UN patrol Israel-Syria border
[IsraelTimes] General says officers setting up checkpoints, clearing landmines to facilitate return of international force to Golan

The Russian military said its forces in Syria would help UN peacekeepers fully restore their patrols along the frontier between Syria and the Israeli Golan Heights.

Lt. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko told news hounds Tuesday that Russian military police have set up four checkpoints in the area and plan to bring their number to eight.

He said the Russian military would secure the area and help clear mines left by jihadists to allow the peacekeepers to resume their operations.

The UN peacekeeping force known as UNDOF first deployed along the frontier in 1974 to separate Syrian and Israeli forces after Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Six Day War, but was halted on the Syrian side of the border in 2014 amid the violence in the country’s civil war.

Last month, Syrian government forces reached the Israeli border area after capturing territory from rebels and Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. fighters. It was the first time regime forces had taken up positions along the frontier since the uprising against Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
swept through the country in 2011, becoming a seven-year civil war.

In response, the UN announced it was implementing a "gradual return" of its peacekeepers to the border area for the for the first time since 2014, conducting joint patrols with Russian military police.

UN deputy front man Farhan Haq told news hounds last week the key goal of UNDOF’s mission was to eventually reopen the Quneitra crossing between Israel and Syria.

Russia’s Defense Ministry says its military police have been deployed in all areas recaptured from rebels by the Syrian government, including the Golan ‐ a move that appears aimed at reassuring Israel.

Israel considers Iran’s growing influence in Syria ‐ it has advisers and allied militias fighting alongside Syrian troops‐ as an existential threat and has looked for guarantees from Moscow to push pro-Iran fighters away from its frontiers.

Israel has sought to avoid direct involvement in the Syrian conflict but acknowledges carrying out dozens of Arclight airstrikes there to stop deliveries of advanced weaponry to its Lebanese enemy Hezbollah.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Strzok's firing reveals the scandal at the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility
[American Thinker] Because Trump-haters already are donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to Peter Strzok's GoFundMe begathon, they are likely to fund his lawyers making an issue of his firing. The fact that the deputy director of the FBI overruled the Office of Professional Responsibility's recommendation for a mild penalty of a 60-day suspension and a demotion will no doubt be a centerpiece of their argument that politics reared its ugly head, and he is a martyr.

Good.

Sara Carter, with many sources within the FBI, lays out the case that the OPR acted with bias and needs reform. I recommend that you read the whole thing, but here are some excerpts:
[W]hat could have led FBI Deputy Director David Bowdich, to make the decision to overrule OPR? ...

Former FBI special agents, some of whom worked with OPR for years, said they agree with Bodwich's decision. They told SaraACarter.com that the system is broken and Bodwich had no other choice but to step in and fire Strzok. They say political leanings, friendships and dual systems of justice inside OPR have plagued how cases regarding FBI agents are adjudicated and handled.

"Strzok was under oath before Congress and he made statements that appeared to be false and refused to answer some questions, but he was going to get just a slap on the wrist," said a former supervisory special agent from OPR adjudication, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the nature of their work. "There is absolutely no wiggle room when it comes to lack of candor in the FBI...unless you're an SES (Senior Executive Service). Strzok's firing went well beyond texting about Trump. Strzok would have also been involved in the handling of the FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) application to the FISC (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court)..." The agent noted that Strzok was "well aware that he was lying by deception when they did not include the information on who paid for the dossier and (that) Bruce Ohr was back-channeling information for a discredited source."

"Strzok knew they were not putting the application in the right context," the former FBI supervisory special agent added. "If there was the slightest doubt if that application was not 100 percent true, then that application would not go forward."

Unless I am mistaken, these are felonious actions. No wonder Strzok needs a legal defense fund.

The OPR obviously needs reform, as does more than just the top management of the FBI.

IDF: Soldiers nab 3 Palestinians with pipe bombs near West Bank settlement
[IsraelTimes] In separate case, 2 bombs are thrown at the Rachel's Tomb holy site in Bethlehem

Israeli troops jugged
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
three Paleostinian suspects armed with pipe bombs outside a settlement in the northern West Bank on Tuesday, the army said.

In a separate case, on the other side of the West Bank, two pipe bombs were thrown at the Rachel’s Tomb holy site in Bethlehem. The explosives failed to detonate and "did not endanger anyone and caused no injuries," police said.

According to the military, three suspects were spotted by a soldier who was monitoring surveillance cameras in the area between the Paleostinian village of Deir al-Hatab and the Israeli settlement of Elon Moreh, near Nablus.

Soldiers were called to the area, who arrested the three Paleostinians.

"After a search, four pipe bombs were found in their possession," the military said.

The suspects were handed over to the Shin Bet security service for questioning.

Police said the two pipe bombs were thrown from the Paleostinian side of the barrier surrounding the pilgrimage site.

Sappers were called to the scene to neutralize the explosives, and border guards closed down the area and set up roadblocks in order to search for the perpetrators of the attempted pipe kaboom, police said.

On Monday night and early Tuesday morning, Israeli troops arrested 21 Paleostinian suspects and shuttered an illegal weapons manufacturing workshop in a series of raids across the West Bank, the military said.

Riots broke out in two Paleostinian villages as a result of the raids, with residents throwing rocks, Molotov cocktails and explosives at IDF troops, who retaliated with less-lethal weapons and gunshots had gun sex, the army said.

No Israeli injuries were reported.

Troops also began preparations to demolish the family home of Islam Yusef Abu Hamid, a Paleostinian man from the el-Amari refugee camp in Ramallah who is suspected of killing IDF soldier Ronen Lubarsky earlier this year by dropping a stone slab on his head, the IDF said.

Europe
US, Israeli embassies in Berlin receive letters with powder
[IsraelTimes] Berlin police say threatening letters containing a white powder have been sent to both the American and Israeli embassies in the German capital.

Police spokeswoman Kerstin Ismer tells The News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the Israeli Embassy received a letter July 24 and the US Embassy on July 26. Ismer says police have opened two investigations on suspicion of disturbing the peace by threatening a crime.

She says both contained a powder but would not comment on whether it had been determined to be dangerous or other details due to the ongoing investigation. She would also not say whether the two letters were thought to be connected or whether there were any suspects yet.

Neither embassy had any immediate comment, saying in general they do not comment on security issues.
Update from the Jerusalem Post at 2:15 a.m. EDT:
A police spokeswoman in Berlin told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday that a "crazy" man sent letters last month that contained a non-dangerous white powder to the Israeli, US and Czech embassies and to other institutions in the German capital.

An investigation is ongoing and a suspect has been identified, although no arrests have been made, the spokeswoman said, adding that the matter become known due to an News Agency that Dare Not be Named report on Tuesday.

The police spokeswoman could not say if the man whom she termed mentally unstable wrote the same letter ‐ which the Post has learned was very threatening ‐ to all the embassies. The letter was also sent to an Asian embassy.

The police spokeswoman said the man is not a member of a terrorist group and there is no terrorist background to the case.

Four injured, one seriously, in French knife rampage; terror motive ruled out
[IsraelTimes] An Afghan asylum-seeker was enjugged
Please don't kill me!
after launching a drunken and frenzied knife attack in the sleepy southwestern French town of Perigueux, injuring four people including one seriously, police say.

The incident began Monday evening with the 19-year-old man, who was known to have psychological problems according to local authorities, lashing out at cars outside his home.

The head of the ambulance service for the area, Jean-Jacques Girard, tells the regional Sud-Ouest daily that he was seen "kicking and banging a first vehicle with his feet and fists, then a second" and also "rounding on female motorists."

Two paramedics who witnessed the incident tried to calm the man down but after disappearing inside his home he returned with a knife and attacked them, leaving them with injuries to the head and neck.

He then turned on two brothers aged 64 and 68 living next door, leaving one with a perforated lung and the other with stab wounds to the back.

The man was eventually overpowered by one of the brothers and a man of Cameroon

ian origin, who stepped in to help wrestle his knife away.

Police have arrested the man and placed him in jug on charges of aggravated violence.

They have ruled out any terrorist motive.

Karachi ranked among world’s least liveable cities
[DAWN] Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
has been named among the least liveable cities in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) ‐ the research and analysis division of the Economist Group.

The annual EIU survey ranks 140 cities on a range of factors, including political and social stability, crime, education and access to healthcare.

This year, Karachi has been ranked 137th on the list ‐ the fourth least liveable city in the world ‐ only managing to fare better than Damascus in Syria, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Lagos in Nigeria.

The survey found that civil war and terrorism played a "strong role" in the worst performing cities. Of the cities with poor scores, 11 occupied the very bottom tier of liveability, where ratings fell below 50 per cent and most aspects of living were severely restricted. The [low] rankings of cities like Damascus, Karachi and Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
suggested that conflict was responsible for many of the lowest scores.

Anti-terror financing compliance review of Pakistan to conclude tomorrow
[DAWN] A visiting delegation of the Asia Pacific Group (APG) on Thursday will complete its review of Pakistain’s compliance with international obligations over fighting money laundering and terror financing in order to submit its report to the Gay Paree-based Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

By the end of September next year, Pakistain has to comply with a 10-point action plan it committed with the FATF in June this year to combat terror financing and money laundering to get out of the grey list or else fall into the black list, a finance ministry official told Dawn.

He said the six-member APG delegation did not have any meeting scheduled with caretaker Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar, but was expected to have a wind-up session with the federal finance secretary after going through a checklist of 26 actionable points with other stakeholders, including the Financial Monitoring Unit (FMU) of the State Bank of Pakistain, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistain (SECP), National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and representatives of the ministries of foreign affairs and interior.

PTI issues show-cause notice to party lawmaker for 'beating up' Karachi citizen
[DAWN] Hours after a video of Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) politician Dr Imran Ali Shah physically attacking a man in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
went viral on social media, the party on Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to the MPA, saying his actions were "unacceptable".

The notice says that Shah should present his version "within 24 hours" otherwise he would be referred to the disciplinary committee for appropriate action.

The provincial politician from Karachi's PS-129 constituency was caught on video slapping a man multiple times during a heated argument in the middle of a road in Karachi. The video that went viral showed that Dr Shah was accompanied by his armed guards, who also threatened the man.

After the video drew ire on social media, the PTI politician released a video clarifying his stance regarding the incident. Dr Shah claimed that he was driving by when he saw a man "repeatedly hitting a poor man's car and stopped him".

Dr Shah said that he asked the man to "apologise to the poor man", adding that once people started dispersing "the man abused me and then pushed me".

The PTI politician further claimed that he had only "pushed" the man; however, in the video it is visible that Dr Shah slapped the citizen multiple times.

Dr Shah's armed personal guards surrounded the man who was slapped and stopped him from following Dr Shah, who walked to his car and drove away.

In his clarification video, the PTI leader apologised for "hurting anyone's feelings", but remained adamant that he "could not stand back and watch 'injustice' take place like this".

Dr Shah further clarified that his car was not involved in any accident.

While talking to GeoTV later in the evening, Dr Shah repeated the contents of his video message, but could not properly answer host Shahzeb Khanzada's questions regarding the "unseen poor man" that the PTI leader claimed he was defending.

Masked vandals torch dozens of cars in Sweden
[DAWN] Up to 80 cars were set on fire overnight across western Sweden by masked vandals, police said on Tuesday, in what they suspect was a coordinated attack weeks before a general election.

Most of the cars were burned at around 20 locations in Sweden's second largest city of Gothenburg late on Monday.

Authorities said two suspects aged between 16 and 21 have been locked away
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
so far in Gothenburg and would be questioned on Tuesday.

Police said they believe the attacks were organised on social media. No one was injured in the car blazes.

"We've never seen this many cars set on fire before," Hans Lippens, police front man in western Sweden, told AFP.

The incident fired up the rubes among Swedish politicians who are busy campaigning for the September 9 general election.

"I'm furious. My question to (the perpetrators) is: what the hell are you doing?" Social Democratic Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told public broadcaster Swedish Radio on Tuesday.

"You're ruining things for yourselves, your parents and your neighbourhoods," Lofven said, adding the incident "looked very coordinated, almost like a military operation".

Cars set ablaze is common in Sweden. In Stockholm's suburbs alone, such crimes happen almost on a daily basis, usually attributed to disadvantaged youths.

Last year, 1,457 cars were "deliberately" set on fire across Sweden, compared to 1,641 in 2016, according to the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency's figures.

"Sweden has tolerated this for too long. This must end now," Ulf Kristersson, leader of the conservative opposition party, the Moderates, wrote on his Facebook account.

Last year in February, two days after US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
's baffling comments linking crime to immigration in Sweden, riots broke out in the immigrant-heavy northern Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby.

Dozens of youths clashed with police after they arrested a suspected drug pusher in Rinkeby. The rioters threw stones at police, burned cars and looted shops.

Boy found handcuffed as judge raids lock-up in Larkana
[DAWN] A young boy was found handcuffed and kept in unlawful confinement on the premises of the Dari cop shoppe of Larkana when a civil judge conducted a raid to recover a man, detained by the SHO concerned allegedly to settle an old score.

According to a source, both the persons were found detained at the SHO’s residential quarter, located on the premises of the cop shoppe.

The raid was conducted by civil judge and third judicial magistrate Zafarullah Jakhrani in compliance with an order of Larkana’s district and sessions judge.

The order was issued on an application filed by Mashooq Kharos, a resident of Baitul Mal Colony, through his lawyer Abid Abro under Section 491 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The applicant stated that his brother, Ashiq Kharos, had been kept in illegal confinement by SHO Fida Hussain Langah for 14 days.

The applicant’s lawyer, Abid Abro, informed the court that Ashiq Kharos was picked up by Dari police in a raid on his house and kept in unlawful confinement. He alleged that the SHO’s act was aimed at settling an old score with the victim.

The sessions judge appointed Judicial Magistrate Zafarullah Jakhrani as the raid commissioner and ordered him to pay a surprise visit to the cop shoppe and recover Ashiq Kharos if he was found detained there.

The JM complied with the order and found Ashiq Kharos, as well as the young boy, Imran Brohi, handcuffed and kept in a lock-up on the premises of the cop shoppe, which also houses the SHO’s residential quarter.

The raid commissioner ordered SHO Fida Hussain Langah to appear before the district and sessions judge Larkana on Wednesday (Aug 15) along with the relevant record pertaining to detention of both persons.

The raid commissioner also checked the station’s diary and asked the duty officer to produce record of the two persons’ arrest. The officer failed to produce any document regarding the boy’s detention but showed an entry pertaining to arrest of Ashiq Kharos in some cases registered against him. He claimed that Kharos was absconding in the cases.

At least 39 injured in Independence Day gunsex in Karachi
[DAWN] At least 39 people were maimed by stray bullets as Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
ites turned to gun sex on the eve of the country’s 72nd Independence Day.

A 22-year-old man, Salman, lost his life owing to an kaboom of fireworks substance, reported the Karachi Police media cell on Tuesday.

Hospitals across the city treated patients injured in the gun sex. Among those injured by stray bullets, 15 were brought to Jinnah Hospital and five were brought to Civil Hospital.

The injuries took place in different parts of the city, including North Nazimabad, Korangi and New Karachi areas.

The practice of celebratory firing is common in the city, particularly on occasions like Independence Day and New Years Eve. In December 2017, the Sindh government had imposed a ban on gun sex as well as one-wheeling and car racing on New Year's eve to prevent any untoward loss of life.

Afghanistan
'We won't survive': Residents speak of ongoing battle in Ghazni
[Al Jazeera] As Afghan cops backed by US airpower continue to battle Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
fighters in the eastern city of Ghazni, hundreds of civilians have been displaced with little means to survive.

Fighting raged for a fifth-straight day on Tuesday following the brazen attack by the gang that threatens the control of the strategic city, about 150km south of the capital, Kabul.

While information has been scarce, an estimated 400 people have been killed so far, including about 150 civilians, according the UN and the Afghan ministry of defence.

"When the fighting intensified, we knew we would die if we didn't leave our home to travel to Kabul," Ghazni resident Yassan Yassan, 21, told Al Jazeera, adding the Taliban had cut electricity and water supplies across the city.

Recalling the violence, Yassan said: "I witnessed a rocket landing on a group of people attempting to escape. All of them died."

She also said the Taliban set government buildings on fire and blocked several areas including the Kabul-Kandahar highway.

"We had to pass through dangerous areas to get to Kabul, we witnessed the worst festivities between the Taliban and security forces," said Yassan.

The UN's Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said between 130 and 150 civilians have reportedly been killed, but those figures remained unconfirmed.

Sanela Bajrambasic, a representative of International Committee of the Red Thingy, told Al Jazeera from Geneva that the situation deteriorated very fast.

"It is a sad reality and it is leaving deep wounds on [Ghazni's residents]," she said. "We have been focused on helping the local hospital. As of today, we are also trying to help collect bodies and to transport them back to their families."

Bodies of Pakistanis killed in Ghazni city being shifted to Pakistan: Khattak

[KhaamaPress] The leader of the Awami National Party
founded by Abdul Wali Khan in 1986. Part of the PPP-led cabinet 2008-13. The ANP is considered left wing, advocating for secularism, democratic socialism, public sector government, and economic egalitarianism....
of Pakistain Afrasiab Khattak has said that the dead bodies of the Pakistanis killed in Ghazni city clashes, are being shifted to Pakistan. Khattak was citing reports regarding the killing and apprehension of several Pakistani militants during the Ghazni clashes as he asked the Pakistani authorities in for an explanation.

Calling the involvement of the Pakistani militants the repetition of the Jalalabad fiasco in 1989, Khattak said authorities in Pakistan must change its policy.

This comes as the Afghan defense minister Tariq Shah Bahrami said Monday that the attack on Ghazni city was carried out by Taliban with the support of foreign militants, including Pakistanis, Chechens, and Arabs.

In regards to the casualties of the militants, Bahrami said at least 194 militants have been killed so far, including 12 of their senior commanders. He also added that more than 147 militants have sustained injuries while 20 civilians were also killed during the clashes.

This comes as clashes continue between the Taliban militants and the Afghan forces in Ghazni city since early Friday.

Saudi-UAE air raids target Yemen's Hodeidah
[Al Jazeera] Saudi-UAE coalition air strikes on Yemen’s Hodeida province have killed and maimed several people, medical sources said.

A spokesperson from the Houthi-affiliated health ministry said Tuesday's attacks on the city of Duraihami killed at least 13 civilians and injured 24 others.

Doctor Youssef al-Hadri said that latest attacks hit a heavily populated area, damaging civilian infrastructure including medical facilities and mosques.

Hadri added that medics from the International Committee of the Red Thingy (ICRC) were being prevented from entering the city.

The ICRC for its part expressed concern with recent developments in the city and said it was still assessing the extent of the damage.

What's next for Turkey after lira slump?
[Al Jazeera] A turbulent five days for the Ottoman Turkish economy has seen the lira hit a record low against the US dollar, sparking fears of a meltdown as Ankara and Washington traded blows over the detention of an American pastor in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
.

Although the case of Andrew Brunson, an Christian Evangelical preacher from North Carolina, has been the focus of the deterioration in US-Ottoman Turkish relations, Turkey's existing economic woes have merely been exacerbated by the row, according to analysts.

In June, Turkey held elections which were brought forward more than a year largely because of the economic crisis on the horizon.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
imposed sanctions against two Ottoman Turkish government ministers and last Friday he doubled the tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Turkey to 50 and 20 percent respectively, setting off a dramatic slide in the lira.

The lira's crash, which saw it fall to a record 7.24 to the dollar early on Monday morning before recovering to 6.35 on Tuesday, prompted concerns that the economy, which is heavily reliant on foreign currency loans, could slide into turmoil.

The country also faces a year-on-year credit deficit if $57bn, or 7 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and growing unemployment.

Taiz governor survives assassination attack in Aden
[ARABNEWS] A roadside kaboom in Yemen’s southern city of Aden targeted the convoy of a Saudi-backed provincial governor but he was unhurt, witnesses said on Tuesday.

Some people were maimed in the attack on Ameen Mahmood, governor of Taiz province and a member of Yemen’s internationally recognized government in exile.

"The governor was not injured, but some of the escorts were maimed and taken to hospital," an official at the governor’s office told Rooters.

The number of liquidations and bombings in Aden has increased dramatically despite the presence of the Yemeni president and his government in the coastal city.

Elsewhere, the Yemeni army said a family was killed by a Houthi

Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The army said that the Iranian-backed Houthi militia are bombing and targeting civilians in Hajjah following field losses.

India to send manned mission to space by 2022: Modi
[ARABNEWS] India will send a manned mission into space by 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Wednesday in a speech to the nation.

"India will send into space ‐ a man or a woman ‐ by 2022, before that if possible," Modi said in a marathon address at the Red Fort in New Delhi for the country’s Independence Day.

The astronaut would be "carrying the national flag," Modi said.

The conservative prime minister said that India would be only the fourth country ‐ after Russia, the United States and China ‐ to launch its own manned space mission.

Stepping up its rivalry with China, India has invested heavily in its space program in the past decade.

It is aiming to send an unmanned mission to the moon in January 2019, the Indian Space Research Organization announced last week.

The Chandrayaan-2 orbiter will aim to put a craft with a rover onto the moon’s surface to collect data. Design changes to the craft forced the space body to push the launch back from this year.

China-Japan-Koreas
Pyongyang summit ‘an audacious step’ towards denuclearization, end of Korean War
[ARABNEWS] A third summit of Korean leaders planned for next month will be a further step toward denuclearization of the peninsula and a peace treaty to end the Korean War, South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in said on Wednesday.

North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
vowed to work toward denuclearization at a landmark summit in Singapore with US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
in June, but the two countries have since struggled to agree on how to reach that goal.

Advancement in ties between North and South Korea is the "driving force" behind denuclearization, Moon said in a speech, lauding Monday’s pact for next month’s summit in Pyongyang, the North’s capital.

The two leaders will "take an audacious step to proceed toward the declaration of an end to the Korean War and the signing of a peace treaty as well as the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," Moon added.

The neighbors remain technically in a state of war since the Korean War of 1950 to 1953 ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.

Moon said he hoped for speedy progress in talks between the US and North Korea, with steps by Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear programs matched by "corresponding comprehensive measures" from Washington.

"When the deep-rooted distrust between the two Koreas and between the North and the US is lifted, the mutual agreement can be implemented," he said on the peninsula’s 73rd anniversary of liberation from Japanese rule, which lasted from 1910 to 1945.

Chelsea Clinton: Roe v. Wade Helped Add $3.5 Trillion to U.S. Economy
[Free Beacon] Chelsea Clinton praised the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on Saturday, saying it helped add $3.5 trillion to the U.S. economy.

Clinton was speaking at a pro-abortion rights event "Rise Up For Roe," which was organized in opposition to President Donald Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, CNS News reports.

Clinton said that abortion rights were something that everyone has to care about if they take justice issues seriously.

"Whether you fundamentally care about reproductive rights and access rights, because these are not the same thing, if you care about social justice or economic justice, agency‐you have to care about this," Clinton said.

Clinton then tried to connect the controversial 1973 Supreme Court ruling to the American economy.

"It is not a disconnected fact, to address this t-shirt of 1973, that American women entering the labor force from 1970 to 2009 added three and a half trillion dollars to our economy. Right?" Clinton said. "The net, new entrance of women‐that is not disconnected from the fact that Roe became the law of the land in January of 1973. So, I think, whatever it is that people say they care about, I think that you can connect to this issue."

Clinton campaigned for her mother, Hillary Clinton, during the 2016 presidential election, and she has been pressed by some progressives to make a political run of her own. She has never held office.

Democrats have warned Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court could imperil abortion rights, although Kavanaugh said during his 2006 confirmation hearing for the D.C. Circuit Court that he would follow Roe v. Wade as "binding precedent."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Arms, Investment and 'Instructors': Russia Boosts Africa Role
[AnNahar] Touting military cooperation and "instructors," arms deals and investment, Russia is making a comeback in Africa after years of inactivity and now aims to rival European countries and even China, analysts say.

Moscow has worked hard over the last three years to strengthen its position in Africa, a pace that seems to have accelerated in recent months, they say.

Its effort is most prominent in the Central African Republic (CAR), a grindingly poor and unstable country that traditionally has turned to the former colonial power France for help.

Since the start of the year, Russia has supplied weapons to the CAR army after gaining UN authorisation to do so and provides security for President Faustin-Archange Touadera, whose security advisor is Russian.

It has also sent five military officers and 170 civilians as "instructors" for CAR's armed forces, even though its troops are already being trained by the European Union.

Experts believe the "instructors" could be from a shadowy mercenary group named Wagner whose forces are reportedly fighting in Syria -- three Russian journalists were killed in the CAR last month while investigating their activities.

Elsewhere, Russia is shipping arms to Cameroon for its fight with Boko Haram jihadists and forged military partnerships with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burkina Faso, Uganda and Angola and cooperation on nuclear power with Sudan.

It is also working with Zimbabwe's and Guinea's mining industries -- sectors where China is an emerging force in Africa.

Africa remains "at the bottom" of Russia's foreign policy priorities, but is "starting to gain more importance," said Dmitry Bondarenko of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"Since 2014 and the annexation of Crimea, Russia is in confrontation with the West and openly demonstrates its desire to become a global power once again. Therefore it can't ignore this part of the globe."

But the interest, he argued, is less for economic gain and more for "political advancement".

- Strategic shift -
The Soviet Union maintained a very strong presence in Africa as part of its ideological war against the West, backing African liberation movements and sending tens of thousands of advisors to countries that had ended colonial rule.

But the collapse of the Soviet Union, economic problems and internal conflicts in Russia during the 1990s caused Moscow to abandon its African projects.

Lack of funds meant many embassies and consulates closed, aid programmes were cut short and ties drastically reduced.

A decade or so ago, the Kremlin started to rebuild its old networks and gradually return to the continent, seeking new partners as ideological concerns gave way to contracts and arms deals.

President Vladimir Putin began the process with visits to Algeria, South Africa and Morocco -- the countries that, with Egypt, it had traditionally had close ties.

His successor for one term, Dmitry Medvedev, visited Angola, Namibia and Nigeria, pitching for business with a delegation of 400 people.

This year, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov toured five African countries, Putin flew to Johannesburg for a BRICS summit that was also attended by Angola, Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda, and Russia showcased African business at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

- 'Tangible alternative' -
For some African countries, improved ties with Russia are attractive, enabling them to play the competition card with Europe and China, say commentators.

It means "having another partner, that is, another channel for investment and development and the support of a country that's powerful on the international scene," said politics expert Yevgeny Korendyasov, a former Soviet and Russian ambassador to several African countries.

In addition, Russia has none of Europe's colonial burden in Africa -- something that may appeal to African countries, where many top officials received university education in the Soviet Union.

The CAR seems to be the first example of the benefits of Putin's shift.

During the Cold War, the country was never close to the Kremlin, but it now eyes Russia to help its troops roll back the militias who control most of the country's territory.

"Before, the countries that the West did not want to cooperate with, such as Sudan or Zimbabwe, could only turn to China," said Bondarenko.

"Now Russia is presenting itself as a tangible alternative."

This new situation "could perceptibly change the geopolitical order on the continent."

Professor: Native Dutch Need To Get Used To Being a Minority
[Breitbart London] Dutch professor Maurice Crul has said that with the ever increasing number of migrants and migrant background people living in the Netherlands, that the native Dutch should just get used to being a minority.

A professor at the Free University in Amsterdam, Crul says that in the larger cities in the Netherlands white Dutch are already a minority and that such trends will follow in smaller cities and towns as well, Dutch newspaper Trouw reports.

"In Amsterdam the time has come: there this group is a minority. Only one in three young people under the age of fifteen is of Dutch descent," Professor Crul said and added, "If you want to know how the integration is going, you also have to look at that group. Who adapts to whom if there is no majority anymore?"

"The first guest workers were a small migrant group in a dominant culture. With the second and third generation that is an outdated idea. Integration now works in two directions," he said adding, "This way a Turkish Dutch person can become your new manager. Or your child is in the minority at school. That is the new reality that the old ’dominant majority’ will be confronted with."

Crul, along with a team of eight researchers, recently received 2.5 million euros from the European Research Council to conduct studies on the subject in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Antwerp, Malmö and Vienna.

Egypt's prosecution detains 6 'terrorist elements' over failed church attack
[AlAhram] Egypt's Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadek ordered on Tuesday the detention of six "terrorist elements" for 15 days pending investigation into accusations of their involvement in a failed terrorist attack on a church near Cairo on Saturday.

Egypt's Supreme State Security Prosecution has charged the detainees with "harming the national unity and social peace, embracing tafkiri beliefs, carrying out hostile acts against vital state installations, places of worship, the military and police forces, and targeting the Church of the Virgin Mary in Qalioubiya," a prosecution statement read.

The prosecution has also charged the detainees with joining an illegal terrorist group which aims at obstructing the provisions of the constitution.

On Saturday, Egyptian police foiled a suicide kaboom attempt at a church in the town of Mostorod in Qalioubiya governorate. The attacker detonated his boom belt killing himself.

There were no other casualties.

One day following the failed attempt
Curses! Foiled again!
, the interior ministry revealed that it had identified the dear departed as 29-year-old Omar Mostafa, a member of a terrorist cell, as well as six other suspects.

Tight security around all Egypt's churches, according to police statements, were the reason why Mostafa detonated his explosives before he could enter the church.

5 Al-Azhar professors, student sentenced to prison over terrorism charges in Egypt
[AlAhram] The Cairo Criminal Court has sentenced an al-Azhar University student to 10 years in prison and five professors to life imprisonment for communicating with and providing logistical assistance to the banned Moslem Brüderbund organization.

The verdict can be appealed before the Court of Cassation.

Investigations revealed that the defendants plotted to recruit new al-Azhar University students who were unknown by security services with the aim of carrying out "revolutionary acts" inside and outside of the university in support of the Brotherhood.

The defendants planned to achieve this by providing financial support and covering residential and study expenses for the new recruits.

The cell organised their communications through social media networks and telephones, according to Sherlocks.

The Moslem Brüderbund was designated a terrorist organization by the Egyptian government in November 2013.

allies.

The tough message emerged a day after White House national security adviser John Bolton met privately with Ottoman Turkish ambassador Serdar Kilic about the case of evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson. Bolton warned him that the United States would not give any ground, a senior U.S. official said.

The White House official, speaking to Rooters on condition of anonymity, said "nothing has progressed" thus far on the Brunson case.

"The administration is going to stay extremely firm on this. The president is 100 percent committed to bringing Pastor Brunson home and if we do not see actions in the next few days or a week there could be further actions taken," the official said.

Further actions would likely take the form of economic sanctions, the official said, who added: "The pressure is going to keep up if we’re not seeing results."

Relations between Turkey and the United States have been soured by Brunson’s detention, as well as diverging interests on Syria. Trump doubled tariffs on imports of Ottoman Turkish steel and aluminum last week, contributing to a precipitous fall in the lira.

The United States is also considering a fine against Turkey’s state-owned Halkbank for allegedly helping Iran evade U.S. sanctions. Earlier this month, the United States imposed sanctions on two brass hats in President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

’s cabinet in an attempt to get Turkey to turn over Brunson.

Brunson is accused of backing a coup attempt against Ottoman Turkish Erdogan two years ago, charges that he has denied. He is being tried on terrorism charges.

Brunson has appealed again to a Ottoman Turkish court to release him from house arrest and lift his travel ban, his lawyer told Rooters on Tuesday.

Iraq
PMFs deny withdrawal from Nineveh, handing over sites to Peshmerga
Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi pro-government paramilitary troops has denied news on withdrawal from Nineveh province and handing over to the Kurdish Peshmerga force, an official said on Tuesday.

In remarks to Almaalomah website, Ali al-Husseini, spokesperson for al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) in the northern axis, said "there is an agreement between the Defense Ministry and PMFs on handing over the border military sites in Nineveh to army forces and withdrawing to the boundaries of the city."

Husseini indicated that "what was circulated by media outlets over an agreement between Baghdad and Erbil on the return of Peshmerga and withdrawal of PMFs from the disputed regions is untrue."

PMFs, according to Husseini, "are still deployed in the northern regions and disputed areas. What happened in Nineveh is just replacement of military sites between the mobilization forces and Irai army."

Husseini accused "the separatists and Kurdistan Regional Government for igniting the strife as well as the security failure in the disputed regions through spreading false news."

Media channels had circulated news on negotiations between several parties, especially Baghdad and Erbil over the return of Peshmerga to some regions in Kirkuk.

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has voiced Iraq’s support for The Sick Man of Europe Turkey

The Legacies of Robert Mueller's Investigations
[AmGreatness] Some 450 days ago we were treated to melodramatic announcements from the media about the start-up of Robert Mueller’s "dream" and "all-star" team.

Reporters gushed in the general hysteria of the times that Mueller would no doubt soon indict President Trump, some of his family, and almost anyone else in his campaign‐and therefore end the Trump aberration.

Press puff pieces highlighted the résumés of his superstars‐of Lisa Page (no comment needed), Peter Strzok (less than no comment needed), Jeannie Rhee (a former attorney for the Clinton Foundation, Ben Rhodes, and for a bit Hillary Clinton), Andrew Weissman (Clinton zealot, Obama and DNC donor, and the cheerleader to Sally Yates’s refusal to carry out a presidential order), Aaron Zebley (the former attorney for Clinton staffer Justin Cooper who set up the infamous Clinton home server and smashed to bits her mobile devices), and a host of other pros, who were all shortly to prove Trump-Russian "collusion."

Abadi faces US wrath at U-turn on Iran sanctions
[ARABNEWS] Failure by Iraq to comply fully with tough new US economic sanctions against Iran would be insane, analysts told Arab News on Tuesday.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi risked incurring US wrath after contradicting himself in the space of a few hours over whether his country would comply.

Amid diplomatic maneuvers, as he negotiates for a second term in office after divisive
...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. Their own statements are never divisive, they're principled...
and contested elections, Abadi offended both Tehran and Washington with conflicting statements on the US sanctions, which were reimposed last week.

First, the prime minister said that while Iraq disapproved of the new sanctions, it would reluctantly comply. "We don’t support the sanctions because they are a strategic error, but we will comply with them," he said.

"Our economic situation is also difficult and we sympathize with Iran. But. at the same time, I will not make grand slogans that destroy my people and my country just to make certain people happy."

His position provoked anger in Iran. An intended visit to Tehran on Tuesday to discuss the issue was canceled, and Abadi’s office denied that the visit had even been planned.

There was also criticism inside Iraq, especially from groups close to Tehran, such as the Asaib Ahl al-Haq and Badr paramilitary movements.

Within hours, however, Abadi had reversed his position. "I did not say we abide by the sanctions, I said we abide by not using dollars in transactions. We have no other choice," Abadi told a news conference in Baghdad.

Asked if Baghdad would stop imports of commodities, appliances and equipment by government companies from Iran, he said the matter was still being reviewed. "We honestly have not made any decision regarding this issue until now," he said.

Cities demand Trump administration act on Tijuana River pollution that fouls San Diego County beaches
[LATimes] San Diego County cities are preparing to go head-to-head with the federal government this week in a legal battle that could force the Trump administration to plug sewage spilling from Tijuana.

Local officials filed the lawsuit in March after demanding for more than a year that federal infrastructure along the border be beefed up to ensure that flows from Mexico are captured before they foul San Diego County wetlands and beaches.

On Monday, a federal court judge will hear a motion to dismiss the case filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, which is defending the International Boundary and Water Commission, or IBWC.

#7  Well, yes Clem, I was about to suggest something along those lines myself. IIRC, US foreign aid to Mexico amounts to about half a billion dollars a year. Trump should tell them they can either use whatever it takes of that money to properly treat Tijuana's sewage or else they won't get another penny.

Several 22 killed in Italian bridge collapse
[CNN] Several people have died after a section of a highway bridge in Genoa collapsed on Tuesday, according to rescue sources cited by Italian news agency ANSA.

The unnamed sources told ANSA that several crushed vehicles are under the rubble with dead people inside, without providing a specific number of casualties.

ANSA reports around 10 vehicles are involved, after a large section of the Morandi viaduct upon which the A10 motorway runs gave way amid torrential rain. The viaduct runs over shopping centers, factories, some homes, the Genoa-Milan railway line and the Polcevera river.
Update from the link at 8:35 a.m. EDT:
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte says 22 people have been confirmed dead in the Genoa bridge collapse. He added that 16 people were injured, nine of them in serious condition.

This is a lower death toll than previously reported: Earlier on Tuesday, the office of the governor of the northwestern Liguria region — where Genoa is located — had said on its official twitter account that the death toll had climbed to 35.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Amid currency crisis, Ankara goes to build roads in Syria
[ARABNEWS] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
is planning a road network to link the main cities in the Euphrates Shield area in Aleppo with its southern provinces of Gaziantep and Kilis.

The two provinces have been home to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees since the beginning of Syria’s civil war in 2011. Gaziantep is just 92 kilometers from Aleppo.

The Ottoman Turkish government will build the roads in cooperation with local councils in Aleppo, with Syrian technicians and engineers expected to be hired along with Ottoman Turkish engineers.

The cost of the project and its schedule have yet to be announced.

The main cities to be linked by the project in war-torn Syria are Azaz, al-Bab, Jarablus, Mareh, al-Rai and Akhtarin.

Ottoman Turkish construction companies will provide local councils with equipment needed for a fast road network, and asphalt will be brought from Turkey.

Syria’s civil war has wreaked havoc on the country’s transport network, and some cities in the region have already been supported by Turkey in efforts to repair and upgrade road links with nearby villages.

Britain
Crash outside UK Parliament treated as terror attack
[NYPOST] A man plowed a car into security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament in London on Tuesday morning, injuring at least three people before being jugged

on suspicion of terrorism, officials said.

The man was driving a Ford Fiesta on the wrong side of the road at up to 50 mph when it mounted the sidewalk and struck a group of pedestrians and cyclists before slamming into the barriers, the Telegraph reported.

The suspect, who is in his 20s, was captured about 7:30 a.m. local time and was being held on suspicion of terrorist offenses, according to Scotland Yard.

No one else was in the car and authorities said no weapons had been recovered from the scene.

Two people were taken to local hospitals and another was treated at the scene. One woman remained hospitalized Tuesday afternoon, but her injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

"Given that this appears to be a deliberate act, the method and this being an iconic site, we are treating it as a terrorist incident and the investigation is being led by officers from the Counter Terrorism Command," said Assistant Police Commissioner Neil Basu.

"Our priority is to formally identify the suspect and establish his motivations if we can. He is not currently cooperating," he added.

The BBC, citing unnamed sources, said the suspect is from the Birmingham area in central England and, while not known to the MI5 domestic spy agency or Britannia’s counter-terrorism network, was known to police.

"At this early stage of the investigation, no other suspects at the scene have been identified or reported to police," Basu said, according to Rooters.

Police raid addresses in Nottingham and Birmingham over Westminster 'terror attack': British suspect who WAS known to officers but not MI5 'used a Ford Fiesta bought two months ago to mow down 15 cyclists'

[DailyMail] The suspect is believed to have lived above an internet café in Sparkhill, Birmingham, reports Sky News. Police have been searching the flat for several hours today.

Officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command are searching another address in Birmingham, where the suspect is said to be known to police, and a flat in the Radford area of Nottingham over the attack, but have not arrested anyone else.

Neighbours of the house searched in Nottingham have said the flat is home to six Sudanese people, and a security source told HuffPost that the suspect is a British citizen of a Sudanese origin.

There has been no suggestion that the suspect lived in the address searched in Nottingham, nor has it been established what its connection to the crime was.

Although Scotland Yard have been treating the incident as a terrorist attack, Home Secretary Sajid Javid has said 'we must keep an open mind'.

Britain faces 700 live terror probes: After new attack on Westminster, officials reveal the scale of the threat to the UK
Update at 9:00a.m. from the bullet-pointed Daily Mail article, above:
The Sudanese-born immigrant accused of bringing terror to Westminster was being investigated over 'irregularities' in his British citizenship application before the attack, MailOnline understands.

Salih Khater, 29, was also thrown off his university accountancy course in May after failing his first year and lost his father and brother in the months before he used his Ford Fiesta to plough into crowds during yesterday's rush hour.

MailOnline understands that Khater had recently been told by the Home Office he was being probed over possible irregularities in his successful application to become a British citizen.

There could be a number of reasons for this apparent dispute, one could be that immigration officials may have discovered discrepancies in his original application to live in the UK such as his age or documents provided as evidence.

Khater studied electrical engineering at the Sudan University of Science and Technology and grew up in the rural town of Wad Madani, around 150 miles south-east of Khartoum, Sudan, where his mother and father farmed millet, and came to the UK around five years ago, possibly as an asylum seeker. He moved to Britain without his family.

He settled in Birmingham where he was described as a quiet loner who loved Celine Dion, smoking shisha and whiling away time at an internet cafe below his old flat in the Sparkhill area of Birmingham.

Until May he was studying accountancy at Coventry University but had his place 'terminated' after failing the first year, while friends said his poor English meant he couldn't complete a pharmacy course 12 months earlier.

Police are today searching his tenth floor council flat just ten minutes from the former home of Khalid Masood, whose murderous rampage 17 months ago appears to have inspired Khater's own carborne attack yesterday. Searches of his old flat and a Nottingham house linked to his car have been completed.

Police are analysing PC from internet cafe he used on the day before launching attack.

One man, who lived near him at the Brinklow tower block told MailOnline: 'He was a Muslim and would go to the mosque but I never once heard him say anything about hating the west.

'He was just a normal guy and we would sit and have a laugh and a drink. In all the time I have known him he never seemed angry or upset about what was going on.'

Khater has so far refused to cooperate with counter terror police.

Another friend said Khater had seemed unhappy in recent weeks.

'He was always on his mobile phone and would use the charger in the shop al the time. He was never off the phone and for the last couple of months he was unhappy. I do not know what was affecting him, but he was not himself.'

Suspect wanted in Raiwind blast case killed in ‘encounter’
[DAWN] A suspect, said to be a former employee of the Pakistain Air Force who was wanted in some terrorism cases, was killed in a Counter-Terrorism Department raid on his house here on Tuesday.

While the police claimed that the man, Nural Haq, was killed in an exchange of gunfire, his relatives alleged that the CTD team shot him dead despite his surrender.

The relatives and people of the area took his body to Amn Chowk and staged a sit-in.

The protesters demanded registration of an FIR against the CTD personnel and urged the chief justice of Pakistain to immediately take suo motu

notice of the incident.

The incident took place within the city cop shoppe’s jurisdiction when the CTD personnel raided the house of Nural Haq, the dear departed, in the Sherdadkhel Cham area at midnight.

Family members of the dear departed alleged that the CTD personnel entered their house and started firing on Nural Haq and picked up one of his brothers, but released him later.

According to IG Mohammad Tahir Khan, it was a joint CTD team from Punjab

and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. He said the dear departed was wanted in the Raiwind blast case, which claimed 10 lives on March 10 this year.

City cop shoppe SHO Qamar Zaman said that Nural Haq was a retired official of the PAF. He was wanted to the CTD in several cases of terrorist attacks. He was incarcerated

, but was set free later, the SHO added.

CTD officials said that the raiding team wanted to arrest the accused, but he opened fire on them, injuring one CTD man. Then the CTD team returned fire, killing Nural Haq.

But the family of the dear departed said that Nural Haq did not open fire and was ready to surrender, but the CTD personnel shot him dead inside his house.

The locals and relatives took the body to the government high school playground for funeral, but later placed it at Amn Chowk and blocked Swabi-Mardan Road, Swabi-Jehangira Road, Swabi-Topi Road and Maneri-Swabi Road.

In a decision announced in the Official Gazette, Ankara said it was imposing extra tariffs on imports of products including rice, vehicles, alcohol, coal and cosmetics.

Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Twitter that the tariffs on certain products were increased "within the framework of the principle of reciprocity in retaliation for the conscious economic attacks by the United States."

#5  When did in and out become synonyms?

Communist crimes need to be whitewashed. Building barriers is supposed to be wrong, not enslaving the people.

To imply that there's a moral difference between any Joe Shmoe who has the audacity to lock the door to his house to keep out strangers and e.g. a Josef Frizl who locked the door to prevent his family from escaping sexual slavery is wrong.

Why? Because this implication leads to the conclusion that Communism is morally inferior to Western civilization.

In this specific instance Merkel's party is preparing the public for state coalition governments formed by itself and the Communist Party of East Germany.
