Hot air balloon catches fire, crashes in Texas; 16 feared dead
[Reuters] At least 16 people were feared dead after a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed in a pasture near the central Texas city of Lockhart on Saturday morning in one of the deadliest balloon accidents on record.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crash occurred near Lockhart, about 30 miles (50 km) south of Austin and at least 16 people were on board the balloon. It did not comment on fatalities.

"It does not appear at this time that there were any survivors of the crash," Caldwell County Sheriff Daniel Law said in a statement.

#1  I may be killed tomorrow, or yet this evening, but it likely won't be from an extension ladder, non-mandatory helo ride, glider, balloon, hang-gliding, ultralight, base jumping, free climbing, motorcycle, jealous husband, sushi, or some other thrill seeking cock-up.

"Hey Besoeker, fast movers dropping MK82's at Udairi Range tomorrow morning, wanna go watch? Huh no. That Mongolian BBQ didn't set well with me. Think I'll sleep in. Thanks just the same."

Boring life? Yes perhaps, but I enjoy the simple things.

Swimsuit mural of Hillary Clinton creates a stir in Australia
An Australian mural of US presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a revealing, stars and stripes swimsuit may be taken down, after it has reportedly been deemed offensive.

The creator of the painting, the street artist who goes by the name Lushsux and who has also painted murals of the likes of Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian, branded calls to remove it "pathetic".

The provocative mural is on the wall of a small business in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray, and reports say the business has been asked by the local Maribyrnong Council to remove it.

"We believe it is offensive because of the depiction of a near-naked woman, not on the basis of disrespect to Hillary Clinton, in accordance with the Graffiti Prevention Act 2007," the council's chief executive Stephen Wall told Fairfax Media on Friday.

Wall said local police had been asked to urgently provide their opinion on the mural, adding that the council intended to issue a notice to the building's owner to remove it within 10 days.

#4  Paint on the wall and someone paints over it and your work is gone.

Street artist should be smart like the guy in the US, make the art in a studio and create posters and then put them up all over in the wee hours of the morning. Then you can still sell posters/t-shirts or replaster them all over town.

Afghanistan
Afghan official: Taliban capture district in Helmand
[ABC] An important district in Afghanistan's southern poppy-growing province of Helmand has fallen under Taliban control after heavy fighting that killed around 17 police and wounded up to 10 others, an official said on Saturday.

The director of Helmand's provincial council, Kareem Atal, said that Taliban militants attacked a series of police checkpoints Friday night as part of a larger assault in the Kanashin district.

Earlier, his deputy, Abdul Majeed Akhonzada, told The Associated Press that Kanashin district has "fallen into Taliban hands."

The fall of the district, which borders Pakistan and major poppy-producing districts, means "Taliban are in control of 60 percent of Helmand," Akhonzada said.

Much of the area of Marjah, Sangin, Garmser and Dishu districts have already fallen to the Taliban, he said.

Syria conflict: 'Families leave' besieged Aleppo
[BBC] Dozens of families have left besieged eastern areas of the city of Aleppo along a humanitarian corridor, Syrian state media says.

The civilians boarded buses where they were taken to temporary shelters, state news agency Sana said.

Some rebel forces had also surrendered to government forces, the report said.

Russia, an ally of the Syrian government, announced on Thursday that four exit corridors would be opened in Aleppo for civilians and rebels.

The move was welcomed cautiously by the UN, the US and some aid agencies.

The US has suggested the plan may be an attempt to force the evacuation of civilians and the surrender of rebel groups in the city.

Europe
Belgium arrests brothers over planned attacks
[BBC] Two brothers suspected of planning attacks have been locked away
Please don't kill me!
in Belgium in an anti-terror operation, prosecutors say.

The two men, named as Nourredine H, 33, and his brother Hamza were detained after house searches in the Mons region and the city of Liege.

No weapons or explosives were found in the searches.

Belgium is still on high alert since 32 people died in bombings at Brussels airport and a metro station in March.

Many more people were maimed in the attacks, which were claimed by so-called Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
"Based on provisional results from the investigation, it appears that there were plans to carry out attacks in Belgium," the federal prosecutor's office said of the latest arrests in a statement.

But the statement added that as yet no link had been found to the Brussels bombings.

A judge would decide on Saturday whether to keep the suspects in detention, it said.

Carr: Ask not who’s the most qualified to be president
[BOSTONHERALD] Obama really said this Wednesday night:

“I can say with confidence there has never been a man or woman — not me, not Bill, nobody — more qualified than Hillary Clinton to serve as president of the United States of America.”

You don’t say, Mr. President? So why don’t we size up her, uh, qualifications, eminent as they might be, compared to some of the prior, lesser 44 occupants of the office.
  • Dwight Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander. Hillary ran the Bimbo Eruptions Unit.

  • Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Hillary wrote “It Takes a Village.”

  • Teddy Roosevelt charged up San Juan Hill. Hillary dodged sniper fire on the tarmac at Tuzla.

  • Honest Abe, Crooked Hillary.

  • Lincoln slept in the Lincoln bedroom. Hillary rented it out.

  • Reagan said, “Tear down this wall.” Hillary said, “Delete them all.”

  • William Howard Taft threw out the first pitch at a baseball opener. Hillary threw the first vase at a president.

  • Gerald Ford appointed Justice Stevens. Hillary abandoned Ambassador Stevens.

  • George Washington wrote letters to John Paul Jones. Hillary wrote a check for $850,000 to Paula Jones.

  • JFK said, “Ask not….” Hillary said, “Don’t ask.”

  • George H.W. Bush built oil rigs. Hillary rigged elections.

  • Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Hillary delivered three speeches to Goldman Sachs … for $675,000.

  • Andrew Johnson was the first impeached president. Hillary is the wife of the second.

  • Washington could not tell a lie, Nixon could not tell the truth, Hillary could not tell the difference.

  • Harry S. Truman was a haberdasher. Hillary donated her underwear to charity for a $2 tax write off.

  • James Madison wrote the majority of the Federalist Papers. Hillary served on the Wal-Mart board of directors.

  • Truman: “The buck stops here.” Hillary: Pay for play.

  • Calvin Coolidge: “The business of America is business.” Hillary: the Clinton Foundation.

  • FDR defeated Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Hillary defeated Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley.

  • James Garfield was shot by a disgruntled office-seeker. Hillary was a disgruntled office-seeker.

  • William Henry Harrison: Tippecanoe and Tyler Too. Hillary: Me Too.

  • Lincoln: “You can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” Hillary: “Are you sure about that?”

  • In 1953, Truman drove his own car back to Independence, Missouri. Hillary hasn’t driven a car since 1996.

  • Washington turned down the invitation to become king. What would Hillary have done?

Preggy Service Member Gets a Little Help from Her Husband
[FOX] "I'm active duty Air Force, and I'm too pregnant to reach my feet anymore, which at the time was a stressful thing to realize. So, without asking, my loving husband decided to help me put on, and take off my combat boots everyday for the last month so that I can still wear my full uniform with pride. Love can be big romantic gestures, or the day to day caring that often goes unseen, but I've never felt more loved than by someone making small daily sacrifices just to help me feel human again."

EU death knell: Eurozone growth HALVES as French economy grinds to a halt
h/t Gates of Vienna
Across the eurozone, gross domestic product (GDP) increased by just 0.3 per cent, falling from 0.6 per cent in the previous quarter, figures from Eurostat showed.

Unemployment was also revealed to be standing at a worrying 10.1 per cent last month.

France shocked onlookers as its economy ground to a complete halt in the three months between between April and June.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
A Palestinian fiction
The idea behind the new bill allowing for the expulsion of a member of Knesset from the parliament is to limit an MK’s public expressions of identification with Palestinian nationalism and its violent manifestations. But the bill also raises a more basic question: Is Palestinian nationalism real or is it a fiction whose sole aim is to wipe us off the face of the Earth? The fact that the question affects us directly requires that we examine it closely. The fundamental aspiration, the ultimate dream, of every national movement is a state of its own. A little bigger, a little smaller ‐ it doesn’t matter, just as long as it’s their own independent state. By definition, the purpose of a national movement is to work to realize that dream.

A quick review of Palestinian activities over the past hundred years reveals no evidence of any efforts of that sort. In Zionism’s early decades, there was no such thing as a Palestinian nation. At most, the Palestinians were a vestige of some pan-Arab nation, which also turned out to be an oriental fairy tale (pan-Arabism breathed its last with the death of Nasser).
Yet "Palestinian Aspirations" enjoy widespread, not to say universal, support. Including from people who honestly believe themselves to be philosemites and friends of Israel. I wonder why?

33 earthquakes in 30 days – the town that won't stop trembling
THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN town of Norseman has a serious case of the shakes ‐ with a staggering 50 earthquakes hitting the area in the last two months.

The gold-mining town ‐ located about 720km east of Perth ‐ has had over 30 quakes this month, with 18 alone on 8 and 9 July.

It all began after a 5.0 magnitude earthquake shook the town in the middle of the night on 28 May, followed by an even stronger 5.1 magnitude aftershock about an hour later.

John Fry, works manager at the Dundas Shire, said he heard a loud rumbling, and soon after, got a call from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, checking if the town needed assistance.

"I thought it was just a train coming through," he said. "The last thing you think of is an earthquake."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Time to walk away from US aid
On Monday, acting head of the National Security Council Yaakov Nagel will sit down with his US counterpart, Susan Rice, and try to conclude negotiations about a new, multi-year defense assistance package.

We must all hope that he fails.

Given the obvious problems with the aid program currently being proposed by the Obama administration, there’s little wonder that until now, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly stated that if necessary, Israel is ready to wait for the next administration. Some argue that Netanyahu’s apparent newfound interest in concluding negotiations on Obama’s terms owes to his fear that this is the best offer Israel is likely to get. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump for various reasons, it is argued, will be less likely to offer significant increases in US military assistance.

Assuming this is accurate, the question becomes whether Israel has an interest in the assistance at all.

And so we come to the F-35.

The F-35 is a jet that was developed by a committee and tasked with doing everything. So it isn’t surprising that it doesn’t work. In February, J. Michael Gilmore, the director of the Pentagon’s Operational Test and Evaluation office, submitted a scathing report to Congress on the F-35 program.

Whether or not a Trump or Clinton administration will be more forthcoming is really beside the point. The point is that the US aid deal is really a deal for Lockheed Martin, not for Israel. And we need to say no.
Been saying it for 30 years

Trump to Clinton: 'No more Mr. Nice Guy'
US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump said he was taking the gloves off in his battle against Democrat Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House after taking a scorching from speakers at the Democratic National Convention.

Trump wrapped up a five-day, seven-state campaign swing in Colorado on Friday, where for a fifth straight day his supporters chanted "lock her up" whenever he brought up Clinton's name.

Trump supporters say Clinton deserves to be prosecuted for her handling of US foreign policy as President Barack Obama's first-term secretary of state and for her use of a private email server while in that office.

All week Trump has sought to tamp down the chants by stressing that his main goal is to simply beat Clinton in the Nov. 8 presidential election.

But as the crowd chanted the slogan in Colorado Springs, Trump finally relented.

"I'm starting to agree with you, frankly," he said. "No more Mr. Nice Guy."

UN warns of dangers as Iraqis displaced by IS return home
[AlAhram] Tens of thousands of Iraqis uprooted by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group are now returning home after a string of Iraqi government victories in Anbar province, but the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
is warning civilians may be returning too soon as much of "liberated" Iraq is still dangerous, littered with roadside kabooms and bobby-trapped explosives.

Africa Subsaharan
UN humanitarian convoy in Nigeria ambushed by Boko Haram
[AlAhram] A United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
humanitarian convoy was ambushed by Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
jihadists Thursday in Nigeria's restive northeast, leaving several people maimed, the UN children's agency and the Nigerian army said.

It was the first such attack on aid workers in the volatile region, the epicentre of the seven-year Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria's mainly-Moslem north.

"The convoy was travelling from Bama to Maiduguri in Borno State, Nigeria, returning from delivering desperately needed assistance," when it was ambushed, UNICEF said in a statement Friday.

"Unknown assailants attacked a humanitarian convoy that included staff from UNICEF, UNFPA, and IOM," the statement added.

It said a UNICEF employee and an IOM contractor were maimed in the attack and were being treated at a local hospital.

"All other UNICEF, IOM and UNFPA staff are safe," it added.

UNICEF said the team was in a remote area of northeastern Nigeria, where protracted conflict has caused extreme suffering and has triggered a severe malnutrition crisis.

"This was not only an attack on humanitarian workers. It is an attack on the people who most need the assistance and aid that these workers were bringing," it added.

UNICEF said the UN had temporarily suspended humanitarian assistance missions in the area pending a review of the security situation.

The Nigerian army confirmed the incident in a statement by its front man Colonel Sani Usman.

"Troops returning from Bama on humanitarian escort duty, were ambushed en route (to) Maiduguri by suspected remnants of Boko Haram bandidos Death Eaters hiding in Meleri village, a few kilometres from Kawuri," it said.

It said the military repelled the attack, leaving two soldiers and three civilians injured, including UN aid workers.

Some cities in the northeast, including Bama, had gone up to 18 months without any humanitarian deliveries before aid agencies and the UN arrived in June. Many areas can only be accessed under escort from the Nigerian army. The UN said in May that 9.2 million people living around Lake Chad, which forms the border of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
and Niger, were in desperate need of food. Seven million of them are in Nigeria.

The medical charity Doctors Without Borders this week also raised the alarm, saying its teams had recently found extremely high levels of malnutrition in northeastern Borno state. The charity known by its French acronym MSF said the there were between 500,000 and 800,000 people trapped in the area that cannot be reached by humanitarian workers.

Boko Haram, which seeks to impose strict Islamic law in northern Nigeria, has been blamed for some 20,000 deaths and displacing more than 2.6 million people since 2009.

Nigeria's government has been encouraging people to return home since the recapture of swathes of territory lost to the Islamist gunnies in 2014 but most are still largely reliant on food handouts.

Michael Flynn, former DIA chief, blasts John Allen, retired Marine general backing Clinton
[Wash Times] Michael Flynn, the retired Army lieutenant general who was once a prospective running mate for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, blasted a fellow former military officer on Fox News Thursday night for backing Hillary Clinton.

John Allen, a former Marine general, addressed the Democratic convention in Philadelphia the same evening that Mrs. Clinton accepted the party’s nomination for the presidency, which drew the ire of Mr. Flynn.

"I honestly don’t know how John Allen can look at himself in the mirror and say why he supports Hillary Clinton," Mr. Flynn told Fox’s Megyn Kelly.
General Flynn was referring to General Allen.... right ?
Mr. Flynn, who used to lead the Defense Intelligence Agency under the Obama administration, is now a vocal critic of the president’s strategy to combat the Islamic State -- a strategy Mr. Allen helped craft as the special envoy of a coalition assembled to the eradicate the terrorist group, Fox News reported Friday.

"General Allen as a retired officer was in charge of our current strategy for well over a year ... and during that period of time the rise of radical Islamism and [the Islamic State], you know, it exponentially grew," Mr. Flynn said. "The strategy that John Allen was in charge of ... it’s a failed strategy."

Europe
French government considers banning foreign funding of mosques
[DeutscheWelle] The proposal comes as pressure mounts on the government to do more to prevent domestic terrorist attacks. La Belle France is "just now waking up" to the threat of Islamist extremism, one expert told DW.

Speaking with newspaper "Le Monde", Valls said it was time for a "new model" for relations with Islam and that he was open to the idea of banning financing from abroad for mosques being built in La Belle France. He also called on imams to be trained in La Belle France ‐ a proposal echoed by Dalil Boubakeur, the rector of the Grand Mosque in Gay Paree, earlier this week.

French mosques have received a substantial amount of funding from North Africa and the Middle East over the years. One study, published by the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) organization in Berlin in 2010, said that 62 percent of the budget of the Union of Islamic Organizations in La Belle France came from other countries. Many mosques have largely been dependent on funds from Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. The Saudi royal family and Egypt's Moslem Bruderbund were among those foreign entities credited with helping build certain mosques around the country.

62 percent of the budget of the Union of Islamic Organizations in France came from other countries, mainly Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. The Saudi royal family and Egypt's Moslem Bruderbund were among the donors.
Ronja Kempin, a security expert with SWP, told DW that the French government has traditionally steered away from involving itself in religious matters. Secularism "made La Belle France blind" to religion, and she suggested this was a reason why the foreign funding of mosques has not been a prime concern of the government until now.

"You could say the French state is just now waking up" to the problem of radicalization in the religious community, she said.

Focus on de-radicalization
The proposal to halt foreign funding for mosques is but one of the government's recent efforts to address the ongoing threat of homegrown terrorism.

In his interview with Le Monde, Valls said it was as a failure that the priest's murderer, 19-year-old Adel Kermiche, had been released from prison after being caught attempting to travel to Syria. Consequentially, he said judges needed to evaluate potential Death Eaters on a different, case-by-case basis.

In September, Valls announced that the government planned to open up centers across the country to help formerly radicalized Islamists reintegrate into society.

"The fight against jihadism is probably the greatest challenge of our generation," Valls said at the time.
Indeed.

Gen. Allen: Hillary ‘Knows How to Use All Instruments of American Power
[Breitbart] PHILADELPHIA -- Retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star Gen. John Allen delivered a speech praising presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during the Democratic National Convention in the voice of a military drill instructor, saying she will defeat the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) and take care of veterans.

Florent "Flo" Groberg, a retired U.S. Army Captain who was awarded the Medal of Honor, America’s top award for valor in combat, by President Barack Obama for his service in Afghanistan, echoed the general’s comments.

Gen. Allen, accompanied by a group of veterans on stage, said about Clinton:

We trust in her judgment! We believe in her vision for a united America! We believe in her vision for an America as a just and strong leader against the forces of hatred, the forces of chaos, and darkness! We know that she as no other knows how to use all instruments of American power, not just the military, to keep us all safe and free [interrupted].

Some apparent supporters of Bernie Sanders (I-VT) attempted to heckle the former top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, screaming, "No more war!"

They did the same thing when former defense secretary and CIA Director Leon Panetta spoke on Wednesday.

This time, however, they were drowned out by the majority shouting, "USA!"

Why should we listen to him about Hillary? Allen embarrassed himself with Khawam-Kelly, failed in Afghanistan, and now in Iraq. His honor tarnished by his association with Kelly, his courage petered out when confronted and he quit, and his ambition took front seat to his commitment to his family. I am no fan of what he turned into...just another perfumed prince that believes his own hype.

Six Abu Sayyaf militants killed in two clashes
[Inquirer] Six Abu Sayyaf militants were killed during continuing military operations in Basilan and Sulu on Friday morning, the Philippine military reported. Military spokesman Filemon Tan Jr. said two of those killed were identified as Abu Sayyaf sub-leaders.

The Basilan clash took place in Tipo-tipo town, and two rebels under Radzmil Jannatul, alias Khubayb, and Guro Arah, were killed. Nine soldiers were wounded.

About three hours after that clash, Tan said troops also encountered a group under Abu Sayyaf leader Alden Bagadi in Indanan, Sulu. Four Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed in the battle while two soldiers were wounded.

Tan said, "Close air support was provided to the engaged troops. Military troops further recovered the remains of the enemy’s casualties."

NARAL Absolutely Gushes Over Clinton's Extreme Abortion Positions

Clinton has promised to fight on behalf of Planned Parenthood, an organization exposed for dealing in fetuses, and to repeal the Hyde amendment, which bans the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.

"Other candidates have quietly supported abortion rights," the NARAL email continued. "Not Hillary. She put choice front and center.

ISIS executes 20 in Mosul

DUHOK – The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) on Friday executed 20 people in Mosul city of Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh province, claiming they’ve been conspiring against the so-called Caliphate, activists reported.

ISIS militants raided dozens of houses in Mosul city earlier this week, and arrested a number of people suspected of cooperating with Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the US-led coalition.

“The group claimed that after interrogations, 20 of the arrestees have been involved in supporting the Peshmerga forces and the western coalition that are combatting ISIS in Mosul,” head of Nineveh media centre Raafat al-Zarari told ARA News.

The victims were publicly executed in central Mosul on Friday afternoon, after a Sharia official read a statement describing them as “apostates, mercenaries and spies who deserved death”.

“ISIS militants called on the people of Mosul to gather in the central square in order to witness the execution of what the group said were mercenaries and enemies of the Caliphate,” media activist Abdullah al-Malla told ARA News in Mosul.

“Families of the victims were also forced to joined the crowd and witness the brutal scene,” al-Malla reported. “They were executed by firing squad at the hands of masked ISIS militants.”

Mosul city, which is considered a de facto capital for ISIS in Iraq, has recently witnessed several campaigns of arrest and public executions. Most of the victims were civilians and media activists who have been accused of violating the group’s regulations or supporting hostile parties.

Six BIFF rebels killed in Maguindanao clashes
[Gulf Today] At least six "rogue" Moro militants and a soldier died in a series of clashes in Maguindanao province that also saw the participation of two attack helicopters to support the ground troops.

Brigade commander Lito Sobejana said 14 other members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and four soldiers were injured in battles that centered mainly on neighboring villages in the town of Shariff Saydona.

Sobejana said the clashes started on Tuesday when soldiers were sent to investigate complaints of villagers that they saw BIFF militants planting improvised bombs along a road leading to town. Sobejana also disclosed the soldiers turned over to the families the bodies of the six dead militants they had recovered in observance of the Muslim tradition for the immediate burial of their dead.

The BIFF insurgents were led by Kagi Kariakan who claimed he was their new leader, leading to suspicions that "all is not well" in the ranks of the secessionist group.

Suspects arrested in Yemen over attack on Aden old folks’ home
Waidaminnit! Yemen has old folks?
Define old...
Thirty two.
Yemeni security forces have arrested a number of suspects in connection with an attack on a senior citizens’ home in Aden in March in which at least 16 people were killed, including four Indian nuns, a spokesman said on Thursday.

His statement said one of the suspects had confessed to the attack, in which four people supposedly visiting their mother stormed the compound and opened fire. An Indian priest was kidnapped, and his fate is still unknown.

The motive for the attack was unclear but President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi called it an act of terrorism.

The spokesman described those arrested as a “gang” but gave no details on their number or motives, and said the search for suspects continued.

Yemen’s Saudi-backed government has been forced out of the capital Sanaa by Houthi militias and is now based in Aden, but struggles to impose its authority even there.

Once a cosmopolitan global seaport, Aden has become a backwater as result of the civil war, and more recently a conflict zone, its Christian community largely driven away.

Officers in Freddie Gray Case Suing Marilyn Mosby
[MSN] Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby may have dropped criminal charges against the remaining officers in the Freddie Gray trial, but she remains entrenched in a legal battle in civil court.

Five of the six officers charged for the death of Gray are suing Mosby, as well as Maj. Samuel Cogen of the Baltimore Sheriff's Office, in civil court for a gamut of causes.

In several lawsuits filed earlier this year, Officers William Porter, Edward Nero, Garrett Miller, Lt. Brian Rice, and Sgt. Alicia White alleged defamation, false arrest, false imprisonment, and violation of constitutional rights, among others.
...lost wages, legal costs, hiding exculpatory evidence...
The complaint filed by Porter and White stated that Mosby "made statements for purposes of quelling the riots rather than prosecuting coppers who had committed a crime," and that Mosby "exceeded her authority" and "brought charges against coppers that were wholly unsupported by evidence and probably cause."

"These officers were humiliated," attorney Michael Glass, who represents Porter and White, he told NBC News. "Our position is that the charges were brought for a reason other than prosecuting criminal conduct. There was a political motivation and the charges were not supported by evidence."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel's had success against 'lone wolf' terrorists — here's how
[IsraelNationalNews] "Lone wolf" terrorism in Europe is making headlines around the world. But in Israel, the phenomenon of angry or troubled individuals taking up arms is old news.

Since October, Israelis have endured a wave of violence that has been carried out largely by individual Palestinians without backing from terrorist groups — so much so that some have called this the "lone wolf intifada."

As of the end of June, 38 people had been killed and 298 injured by attackers, according to the Shin Bet security service.

Yet the violence appears to be winding down, at least for now. In October, when the wave of violence is said to have started, the number of attacks against Israelis spiked to 620. In June, there were 103 attacks, lower than in September, before the wave of violence began.

A large majority of the attacks — some 1,500 out of 2,000 — were in the West Bank, where the Israel Defense Forces is responsible for protecting Israelis. Here are five key methods the army used to turn the tide of violence.

Keep the terrorist groups out of it
The wave of violence may be considered a lone wolf intifada, but that's because the army has put a lid on the terrorist groups, a senior IDF officer told reporters during a briefing this week. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the nature of his job.

Since the second intifada, the last major Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s, the Israeli army has managed to largely dismantle the networks run by Hamas and other terrorist groups in Judea and Samaria, according to Shlomo Brom, a retired brigadier general and an analyst at Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies think tank.

"Basically the terror networks are dismantled, and basically the security forces are dealing with maintenance," he said.

But that doesn't mean terrorist groups have stopped trying to launch attacks against Israelis. In the past three months, the army has thwarted dozens of attempted attacks by Hamas alone in what the senior official called the "old war" against organized terror.

“We're still having day-to-day indications of them trying to find people in Judea and Samaria, fund them, give them weapons, give them explosives and tell them to shoot Jews," he said. "This hasn't changed."

Philippines: Deadly NPA ambush 'disheartening'
[Anadolu] A top Philippine government negotiator has expressed regret over an attack by suspected communist militants that killed a pro-government militiaman just days after President Rodrigo Duterte declared a unilateral ceasefire. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said in a statement that it was "disheartening" that the New People's Army "failed to respect the unilateral ceasefire."

According to the military, NPA militants belonging to Guerilla Front 34 in southern Mindanao attacked a Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit in a village in Davao del Norte province, killing the militiaman and wounding four others Wednesday. Duterte responded by threatening to withdraw the unilateral ceasefire declared during his first State of the Nation Address on Monday.

He instructed Bello, a leftist congressman, to demand an explanation. Bello said that he had spoken with a panel member of the National Democratic Front (NDF) -- the CPP's political wing -- and was informed that as far as Fidel Agcaoili is aware, the NPA has been on active defense mode Tuesday.

Bello said Agcaoli promised to look into the matter, adding that the government would await the results of the NDF's verification. He quoted Agcaoli as expressing the NDF's commitment to resume preparations for upcoming talks scheduled Aug. 20-27 in Oslo.

In his speech Monday, Duterte said he aims for a "permanent and lasting peace" before his term ends in 2022. The CPP welcomed the declaration, but added that the release of political prisoners should follow immediately.

Libya may run out of money in less than 4 years
No chance of running out of either hard boyz or refugees...
Libya produced 500,000 barrels of oil a day in 2015 and exported almost 450,000 barrels per day, according to the World Bank’s latest MENA Quarterly Economic Brief, “Whither Oil Prices?” report.

In the report’s section on how Libya is reacting to low oil prices, Worls Bank noted that the government approved a budget of about 42.9 billion LYD with exports of half a million barrels per day of oil (more than half of its exports in 2012) with a price of $50 a barrel.

In response to low oil prices, some austerity measures have been taken, but at the same time the government is rewarding public employees in the education sector with 300 Dinars ($219) in extra pay, according to the report.

The fiscal deficit has reached a record high, estimated at 60 % of GDP in 2016, the report said.

“The Tripoli government has resorted to the Central Bank’s reserves which have been falling to $70 billion in 2016 from $120 billion in 2012. If the trend continues, Libya will run out of reserves in less than 4 years,” it noted.

According to the latest OPEC data, Libya produced 332,000 barrels oil per day in June compared to 271,000 barrels per day in May. In end 2015, the country produced 401,000 barrels per day.

Since 2014, Libya has been split between rival governments and parliaments based in the western and eastern regions, each backed by different militias and tribes.

Last month the country’s rival governments in the east and west agreed to merge their competing oil companies. The agreement was hailed as a positive step and some even predicted Libya could quickly double its oil production.

By way of contrast, how screwed is Venezuela? Foreign reserves, mostly illiquid, stand at less that $12 billion.

Senior Tebu commander dies in UAE
[Libya Herald] A top Tebu commander has died of gangrene while being treated in the United Arab Emirates.

Barka Warduko Al-Mahdi Murzuk died this evening following along struggle against leg gangrene despite receiving extensive treatment in the UAE over the last 12 months.

At the start of the 2011 Revolution Mahdi was one the earliest rebels in the south-west. He managed to quickly storm and control the strategic Waw Al-Namous army airbase on the Libyan-Chadian border and Al-Whigh airbase on the frontier with Niger.

Mahdi also overran a number of mostly Tebu villages in the south, Qatroun, Um Aranib and Murzuk and became the military commander of Murzuk.

In 2012 he played a key role in peace negotiations between Tebu and Awlad Suleiman fighters in Sebha and later that year between fighting Tebu and Zuwai militias in Kufra.

According to a Tebu source, Mahdi was admired for his strategic savvy coupled with his religious example to his fellow fighters.

It is unclear if he will be buried in the UAE or flown back to be buried in Murzuk nor is it clear how he contracted the gangrenous wound that eventually killed him.

#1  "...his strategic savvy coupled with his religious example to his fellow fighters." This is rare as the ethnic Tubu are known to be heterodox in their religious practices. In the 19th century they were influenced by Cyrenaica's Sanoussi brothers -- the Sufi sect still active in Libya today. Many Tubu served as bodyguards to King Idris, and then fought desperately against Qadafi and his so-called 'Foreign Legion' to retain Chad's independence.

Erdogan wants presidential control over army
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan wants the armed forces and national intelligence agency brought under the control of the presidency, a parliamentary official said on Thursday, part of a major overhaul of the military after a failed coup.

Erdogan's comments came after a five-hour meeting of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's Supreme Military Council (YAS) - chaired by Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and including the top brass - and the dishonorable discharge of nearly 1,700 military personnel over their alleged role in the abortive putsch on July 15-16.

After the meeting, Erdogan approved the council's decisions to keep armed forces chief Hulusi Akar and the army, navy and air force commanders in their posts, making few changes to the top brass, Erdogan's front man Ibrahim Kalin told news hounds.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Qaddafi’s son Hannibal for Lebanon release: report
[Libya Herald] Muammar Qadaffy
...The late megalomaniac dictator of Libya, admired everywhere for his garish costumes, funny hats, harem of cutie bodyguards, and incoherent ravings. As far as is known, he is the only person who's ever declared jihad on Switzerland...
’s son Hannibal may shortly be released by the Lebanese according to his lawyer.

Hannibal was seized by Amal bully boyz last December during a visit to Beirut, according to some sources, in an attempt to effect a reconciliation with his estranged wife. Early reports that he had been released proved inaccurate.

The bully boyz apparently grabbed him in the hope of winkling out information about their religious leader, Sheikh Musa Sadr who went missing with three colleagues during a visit to Qadaffi in 1978, when he was reportedly critical to the dictator’s face. He and his lover companions were never seen again. Hannibal was three years old when this happened.

His lawyer has reportedly argued that her client had been granted political asylum in Syria and should be allowed to return there. As far as is known Hannibal and other members of Qadaffy’s family have been granted asylum in Oman, after being thrown out of Algeria. This is the first time that the Syrian government of Bashir al-Assad has been involved in the fate of the late dictator’s son.

Libyan forces retake Benghazi district
Libyan forces loyal to a controversial general have wrestled back control of a Benghazi neighborhood from extremists, following months of fighting to drive the Islamists from the country's second city.

General Khalifa Haftar's troops took the al-Gwarcha district of Benghazi, which has been marred by unrest since his fighters launched a campaign to drive extremists out of the city earlier this year.

"We dealt them a firm blow, it's a major victory," Khalifa al-Obeidi, head of press for Haftar's Libyan National Army, told AFP Thursday.

"We are presently pursuing terrorists who are entrenched one kilometer east."

Six of Haftar's fighters died in clashes this week in al-Gwarcha district, including four special forces killed by a landmine explosion.

Haftar's forces have regained several districts of Benghazi in recent months but have yet to retake the whole city. The divisive leader refuses to recognize the joint military command set by the UN-backed Government of National Unity (GNA) in Tripoli, saying he still takes orders from a rival administration based in the far eastern city of Tobruk.

France, Britain and the United States also recognize the GNA as the legitimate government of Libya.

Benghazi, 1,000 kilometers east of Tripoli, has for the past two years been the scene of clashes between Islamists and forces loyal to the government based in eastern Libya.

Extremists such as ISIS took root in Libya in late 2014, taking advantage of the chaos and power struggles that followed the fall of Muammar Qaddafi's regime in a 2011 revolution.

Arabia
GCC countries expected to lose $100B due to low oil prices
Oh dear. However are they going to pay for their jihadi pets now?
Fiscal balances in MENA oil exporters swung from a surplus of $128 billion in 2013 to a deficit of $264 billion in 2016, according to the World Bank’s latest MENA Quarterly Economic Brief, “Whither Oil Prices?” report.

The group of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries lost $157 billion in oil revenues last year and is expected to lose another $100 billion this year, the report said.

Saudi Arabia has depleted $178 billion in reserves, followed by Algeria ($28 billion), and Iraq ($27 billion) in 2015.

Oil revenues have been falling for the third year in a row with fiscal deficits and debts rising. At the same time, several countries - Libya, Iraq, Syria and Yemen- are dealing with the devastating impact of civil war and forced displacement, exacerbating pressure on already tight budgets, the report said.

Oil prices are still up about 60 percent from 12-year lows of $26-$27 in the first quarter. But the rally has faded since they breached $50 in May.

For 2015, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that members of OPEC earned about $404 billion in net oil export revenues (unadjusted for inflation).

This represents a 46% decline from the $753 billion earned in 2014, mainly as a result of a precipitous fall in average annual crude oil prices during the year, and to a lesser extent to decreases in the level of OPEC net oil exports. This revenue total was the lowest earnings for OPEC since 2010.

EIA projects that OPEC net oil export revenues could fall further to about $341 billion dollars (unadjusted for inflation) in 2016.

Comey: Defeat of ISIS Might Actually Increase Terror Attacks in the West
[PJ] The complete defeat of the Islamic State (ISIS) could actually spark new attacks in the West due to a "terrorist diaspora," FBI Director James Comey warned on Wednesday.

"Not all of the Islamic State killers are going to die on the battlefield," Comey explained at a cybersecurity conference at Fordham University, The New York Times reported. "At some point there is going to be a terrorist diaspora out of Syria like we've never seen before."

Comey compared the impending destruction of ISIS with the defeat of Afghani rebels by Russian forces in the 1980s and 1990s. Al Qaeda recruited radical Islamic terrorists from the fighters radicalized in Afghanistan. Their planning produced the deadliest terror attack in the United States on September 11, 2001.

"This is 10 times that or more," Comey declared. "This is an order of magnitude greater than anything we've seen before."

While the FBI director confidently predicted the victory of the military coalition against the Islamic State, he warned that "through the fingers of that crush are going to come hundreds of really dangerous people and they are going to flow primarily to Western Europe." Some, he added, could end up in the United States.

Comey also said the terrorist attacks in Brussels and Paris last year were merely a glimpse of what this impending "terrorist diaspora" would look like. "We in the American counterterrorism business are constantly focused on that -- that's not here yet, but that challenge is going to come."

Terror Networks
Leave ‘Martyrdom’ to the Jihadists
[NYTIMES] "Santo subito." The Italian words mean "make him a saint now." This was the cry of the crowds at the funeral of Pope John Paul II -- a demand swiftly acted upon by the church authorities in Rome. The words are echoing around the world again now. This time, the call comes from Catholics shocked at the death of the Rev. Jacques Hamel, the priest whose throat was cut as he officiated at morning prayers on Tuesday in a small French town near Rouen.

The demand to put the slain French priest on the fast track for sainthood was made by a prominent Italian politician, Roberto Maroni, the president of the Lombardy region. It spread swiftly across the globe on social media as Catholics, and others, expressed their shock at the slaying of the priest. "Father Jacques is a martyr of faith," Mr. Maroni proclaimed, and the pope should "immediately proclaim him St. Jacques." The sentiment was echoed by a bigwig in the Vatican press office who hailed the 85-year-old priest as a "modern-day martyr."

Such calls to canonize the murdered priest are ill advised. They will only play into the hands of the Death Eaters.

Saul Alinsky devotee crystallizes who will be anointed -- and who will be damned.
[Front Page Mag] A day of rain finally broke the oppressive heat wave enveloping the Wells Fargo Center complex which was surrounded by miles of temporary black metal walls, layers of police, and Secret Service checkpoints manned by TSA employees. Inside the convention hall, Democrats railed against border walls, the supposed systemic racism of police and the justice system, and having to show any kind of identification to vote.

Chelsea Clinton introduced her mother on the stage. It was an unremarkable speech not worth detailing here. Next followed a slick video about Hillary that was narrated by actor Morgan Freeman. The final words Freeman says are "How many ways will she light up the world? This is the woman."

Hillary's speech itself was interspersed not so much by boos but by anti-war chants and heckles by the legions of disgruntled Bernie Sanders fans. Her supporters came to her aid most of the time drowning out the dissenters by chanting "Hillary" and "U-S-A."

The speech was like fingernails on a chalkboard. It was a poorly written address made worse by Clinton's stilted and at times strident delivery. Dressed in a white pantsuit, the former secretary of state over-pronounced her words as if she were a special education teacher or a singer in the Swedish band Abba. It had a slight air of condescension about it. And her cadence was weird, to say the least.

She is afflicted by her own special psychopathology. It is a mixture of sociopathy, incompetence, hubris, and contempt. She is our better so we'd better get with her. As David Horowitz tweeted during the speech, Clinton's problem is that "most Americans know exactly what to make of her. This speech is so empty."

ABC News footage seemed to show Bill Clinton dozing off momentarily during the long oration.

But Hillary gave the audience members what they wanted. It was a stroll through a liberal-progressive fantasy land, a place where money materializes out of thin air.

She promised to make government bigger and bigger and bigger. A communist at heart, she promised to suck up to the hardcore socialists in her party. She promised to empty the prisons. She promised to create worse-than-useless green jobs with big taxpayer subsidies. She promised to flood the country with aliens, illegal or otherwise, and hard-to-assimilate Muslims. With her grating voice, she attacked Republican nominee Donald Trump shrilly and relentlessly.

Pakistan-based JeM's role in Pathankot terror attack exposed by US dossier
[ZEENEWS.INDIA] Delhi: Pakistain's lie as far as fomenting terrorism in India has been nailed yet again.

The US has handed over certain documents to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) which could strengthen India's assertions of complicity of Pakistain-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad
...literally Army of Mohammad, a Pak-based Deobandi terror group founded by Maulana Masood Azhar in 2000, after he split with the Harkat-ul-Mujaheddin. As per a report in The Times of India, these comprise of over 1,000 pages of chats and conversations between JeM handler Kashif Jaan and the four fidayeen (identified as Nasir Hussain, Punjab

province, Abu Bakar, Gujranwala, Umar Farooq and Abdul Qayum, both from Sindh).

The conversations prove that terror strike on Pathankot was micro-managed from Pakistain.

The four fidayeen of JeM (who were eventually killed) were in regular touch with their handlers in Pakistain.

The Daily quoted sources as saying that the documents also include Kashif Jaan's conversations with other Pakistain-based JeM office-bearers.

Further, Jaan was reportedly using a Facebook account which was connected to the same mobile number which the attackers called from Pathankot after abducting Punjab police SP Salwinder Singh.

He was also using other mediums like WhatsApp. The investigating agency officials are analysing the documents.

Moreover, the turbans had also called another number in Pakistain connected to a Facebook account of 'Mulla Daadullah'.

The report said that these accounts were accessed before and around the time of the attack using IP addresses of telecom firms (Telenor and Pakistain TeleCommunications Company Ltd, Islamabad) based in Pakistain.

Numbers connected to Al-Rahmat Trust (JeM's financial arm) for which technical details were sought from the US, was also called by the terrorists.

The NIA had sought the help of US to provide details of these accounts and chats.

The US has shared the proof through Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT).

The turbans had entered the strategic air base at Pathankot on the intervening night of January one-two this year and mounted a brazen assault.

In the fierce encounter that had ensued, seven security personnel besides four terrorists were killed.

10 die in airstrikes in Aleppo
At least 10 civilians were killed, including five children, in air strikes Friday on the rebel-held town of Atareb in Aleppo province of northern Syria, a monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said three strikes targeted the main road and centre of the town, warning the death toll could rise because of a large number of seriously wounded.

It was unclear if Syrian regime warplanes or aircraft of its Russian allies carried out what the Observatory called “a new massacre” that left children dismembered.

Qandeel murder case: Police sends questionnaire to Mufti Qavi
[DAWN] MULTAN: Police on Friday handed over a questionnaire to Mufti Abdul Qavi in the ongoing investigation into Qandeel Baloch's murder.

While holding a presser at his residence, Mufti Qavi said he had received a six-point questionnaire from the police. He added that a reply would be submitted by Saturday.

Qavi claimed his last contact with social media celebrity Qandeel Baloch was through mobile phone messages on June 22, and he met the model only once in his life.

Qavi said that he was in Lahore when Qandeel was murdered.

Earlier in June, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Yousaf had suspended Mufti Abdul Qavi’s membership of Ruet-e-Hilal Committee after pictures of him with Qandeel Baloch surfaced on social media.

Qavi's membership in the National Ulema Mushaikh Council was also suspended.

Greenfield: Hillary declares war on American Liberty
From the article:
Half of Hillary’s new positions were things that she had rejected as too radical when Bernie proposed them. Now they’re not too radical anymore. Because the Democrats always keep turning Left.

Yesterday’s crazy radical idea is tomorrow’s Democratic slogan. Yesterday’s Alinsky disciple is tomorrow’s moderate Democrat. Yesterday’s Communist notion is tomorrow’s DNC speech.

And so Hillary Clinton embraced wealth redistribution and re-appropriation from people who aren’t her. She embraced it with verve and gusto. She pushed Communism dressed up in references to the Founding Fathers. It takes a village to take away all our political and economic freedoms.

Bernie Sanders lost, but he won. Or rather it didn’t matter which of them won since they both shared the same radical agenda. The only difference was that Bernie was willing to be honest about it.

Hillary wasn’t. Until now.

Three Ethiopian Soldiers among 5 killed in Somalia
Heavy fighting between Al Shabaab militants and Somali National Army backed by Ethiopian forces serving under AU mission in Somalia (AMISOM) killed at least 5 soldiers.

The combat flared up when AlShabaab fighters launched a counter-offensive gun attack on allied troops based in Moragabey, 45km north of Hudur, the regional capital of Bakool. A witness said three Ethiopian soldiers and two SNA members have been killed in the gunfight, while scores were wounded, some cortically.

The fighting raged on for several hours and both sides exchanged heavy and small weapons that forced many residents to flee their houses, in fear of the renewed clashes in the village. Reports said Somali and Ethiopian troops managed to successfully repulse the Al Shabaab attack and continued to control the area, which fell to the allied forces on Thursday.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
He was arrested for meth, but the crumbs in his car were Krispy Kreme
[MIAMIHERALD] An Orlando man was charged with possession of crystal meth with a gun, but a state crime lab proved him right -- it was actually glaze from Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
Driving while white. Happens all the time.
When the man stopped by the 7-Eleven without buying anything and left with an employee in his car, cops were suspicious.

Orlando police were staking out the convenience store, 938 W. Colonial Dr., after neighbors complained of drug activity, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Police saw the man in the silver Chevy leave without stopping at the stop sign and speed off going 42 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone, according to the report. They pulled him over.

The officer saw his concealed weapon license, asked to hold onto his gun for safety and had the driver get out of the car. That’s when the veteran officer saw four flakes of a white substance on the floor.

"I recognized through my 11 years of training and experience as a law enforcement officer the substance to be some sort of narcotic," the officer wrote in her report. The driver let her search the car, and she found more chunks, which two roadside tests showed were crystal methamphetamine.
If there's anything in the world I would have counted on, it's that a police officer would know the difference between doughnut frosting and crystal meth...
Daniel Rushing was locked away
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
, charged with possession with a weapon, strip-searched and incarcerated
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
in December.

The 64-year-old Orlando man told officers he’d never done drugs in his life, and the crumbs were from his Krispy Kreme doughnut.

Weeks later, a state crime lab proved him right.

"I kept telling them, 'That's ... glaze from a doughnut. ... They tried to say it was crack cocaine at first, then they said, 'No, it's meth, crystal meth," Rushing told the Sentinel.

The 7-Eleven stop was a favor for a church friend, an elderly woman who worked at the service station, he told the paper. Rushing used to treat himself to a Krispy Kreme doughnut every other Wednesday and enjoyed the snack in his car.

The state attorney’s office dropped the case, the Sentinel reported, but Rushing hired a lawyer. He plans to ask the city for damages.

"It feels scary when you haven't done anything wrong and get arrested," he told the paper. "It's just a terrible feeling."

The fall of Iranian ‘doctor’ who forged Israeli and lots of other passports
[IsraelTimes] For years, Hamid Reza Jafary evaded arrest, thanks to a network of Pak lieutenants and a low-key lifestyle. Now he languishes in a Thai jail, after a rare slip brought down his empire.

For a few thousand dollars "The Doctor" opened doors to the world, supplying pristine fake (including Israeli) passports to gangsters and rebels, refugees and migrant workers -- all from an unassuming, scruffy house in the Bangkok suburbs.

But this Iranian master forger now languishes in a Thai jail after a rare slip unspooled a criminal enterprise that helped thousands of people to sidle into Europe and beyond.

Shaboobs kill SNA soldiers in Halgan
Suspected Al shabaab Gunmen have shot and killed 2 Somali soldiers in Halgan area, near the strategic town of Beledweyne in central Somalia on Friday.

Confirming the incident, Halgan area administrator Guhad Abdi Warsame said the soldiers were gunned down by two pistol-wielding assassins thought to be Al Shabaab members.

He said security forces have cordoned off the scene, and kicked off a combine out searches for the suspects who escaped shortly after the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Caribbean-Latin America
Venezuela's new decree: Forced farm work for citizens
A new decree by Venezuela's government could make its citizens work on farms to tackle the country's severe food shortages.
Next is the decree against the kulaks...
That "effectively amounts to forced labor," according to Amnesty International, which derided the decree as "unlawful."
Good to see Amnesia Int'l say something. The world will do nothing, of course...
In a vaguely-worded decree, Venezuelan officials indicated that public and private sector employees could be forced to work in the country's fields for at least 60-day periods, which may be extended "if circumstances merit."
Better get the sugar cane in on time, comrades...
"Trying to tackle Venezuela's severe food shortages by forcing people to work the fields is like trying to fix a broken leg with a band aid," Erika Guevara Rosas, Americas' Director at Amnesty International, said in a statement.

President Nick the Mad Nicolas Maduro is using his executive powers to declare a state of economic emergency. By using a decree, he can legally circumvent Venezuela's opposition-led National Assembly -- the Congress -- which is staunchly against all of Maduro's actions.
Champ and Hilarity are jealous...
Pen + phone = decree.
According to the decree from July 22, workers would still be paid their normal salary by the government and they can't be fired from their actual job.
Nothing to do at their regular jobs anyway since the economy has failed.
It is a potent sign of tough conditions in Venezuela, which is grappling with the lack of basic food items like milk, eggs and bread. People wait hours in lines outsides supermarkets to buy groceries and often only see empty shelves.

Venezuela once had a robust agricultural sector. But under its socialist regime, which began with Hugo Chavez in 1999, the oil-rich country started importing more food and invested less in agriculture. Nearly all of Venezuela's revenue from exports comes from oil.
Whoa! CNN actually called them 'socialist'!!
With oil prices down to about $41 a barrel from over $100 about two years ago, Venezuela has quickly run out of cash and can't pay for its imports of food, toilet paper and other necessities. Neglected farms are now being asked to pick up the slack.

Maduro's actions are very similar to a strategy the communist Cuban government used in the 1960s when it sought to recover sugar production after it declined sharply following the U.S. embargo on Cuban goods. It forced Cubans to work on sugar farms to cultivate the island's key commodity.
With predictable results...
It's important to note that Maduro has issued decrees before and they often just languish. In January, his government published a decree that put in place mechanisms to restrict the access and movements to the money in the accounts. In other words, a kind of bank freeze.

The National Assembly is expected to discuss the decree on Tuesday. But it would largely be symbolic: under Venezuelan law, the Assembly can't strike down a decree.
Worked well in Cambodia. Only 7 million died.
This latest action by Maduro may also be a sign that at least one other leader may be calling the shots on this issue. Earlier in July, Maduro appointed one of the country's defense ministers, Vladimir Padrino, as the leader of a team that would control the country's food supply and distribution. It's powerful role, especially at a time of such scarcity in Venezuela.

"The power handed to Padrino in this program is extraordinary, in our view, and may signal that President Maduro is trying to increase support from the military amid a deepening social and economic crisis," Sebastian Rondeau, an economist at Bank of America, wrote in a research note.
It's an "Army First" policy. We've seen that before...
Venezuela is the world's worst economy, according to the IMF. It's expected to shrink 10% this year and inflation is projected to rise over 700%. Beyond food shortages, hospitals are low on supplies, causing many patients to go untreated and some to die.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Captured Intel Offers Deep Look Inside ISIS: Central Command
[Defense Tech] The head of U.S. Central Command said Thursday that a recent trove of captured intelligence out of Syria is providing a "deeper" insight into the Islamic State's war machine.

"I think it is extraordinarily important. ... It is beginning to provide us deeper understanding of certainly their tactics and techniques," Gen. Joseph Votel, commander of Central Command, told an audience at the seventh annual Aspen Security Forum.

"It has given us a better understanding of how they orchestrate foreign fighters; it gives us idea of how they are communicating among themselves," he added.

The captured computer data, hard files, videos and pictures was taken recently out of an area in Syria that is considered the center of foreign fighters for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.

"It’s a big deal I think, but It’s not a new deal, the idea of capturing enemy material and exploiting it and trying to understand it to help our operations certainly isn't anything new," Votel said.

"We recognize this is going to be a protracted approach here. What we have to expect is that they are going to adapt and as we remove their ability to govern and own terrain they are going to continue to move to more innovative ways of trying to conduct their operations."

Votel referred to the recent attack in the French Riviera city of Nice where a man driving a large truck plowed through crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day, killing 84 people.

"Unfortunately whether the attack in Nice was inspired or what the relationship is, I’m not completely certain, but I think it is a reminder for us just how adaptive this can be," he said. "Our focus is on their use of explosives but then they use something like a semi truck to create a similar effect."

To Votel, victory over ISIS will not come in any one decisive event.

"Success to me ... I think what it looks like is holding our coalition together, preventing ISIL from doing the things it is doing right now ... and preventing them from perpetrating attacks outside the area which they are," Votel said, referring to ISIS as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

"I don't think there is going to be a big victory parade. I think this very much is a wrestling match. We wrestle, we score a point and then we move on to the next moves in this thing. And if you do that enough then eventually you end up prevailing."

This Week In Guns, July 30th, 2016

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

If you could stomach it, you might have seen that Hillary Clinton, the 2016 despotic candidate for president mentioned firearms in her acceptance speech, but you can guess how that musical went: registration, confiscation and murder.

Hershel Smith has a fascinating discussion on precision shooting, comparing the bolt action rifle to the semiautomatic rifle, and how each are used in precision, actual tactical encounters. Don't forget to read the comments, which are most helpful in gaining perspective on the discussion.

I read on a patriot blog some time ago that every shooter should own a bolt action rifle, a semiautomatic rifle and a handgun. The bolt action was said to be the most important because very few moving parts on a bolt action can break, whereas semiautomatics are more complicated. In a situation where civil order breaks down, a bolt action rifle, in the bore size of .308, will continue the fight since those rifles are more likely to be used as sniper platforms.

As a personal matter I prefer the AK, but not because it is exceptionally accurate, or that it can be accurized; I have seen demonstrations by AK owners who say a heavy AK can accurately hit targets out to 500 meters over open sights. I prefer the AK because I am comfortable with the system and with the iron sights. It seems to me that in a kinetic situation, in which I need to hit a target out to 400 meters, three shots rapidly fired are all I need from a hidden position. Then the need to reposition arises. The AR is much more accurate, it is said, so perhaps fewer rounds could be fired at your target, but only two fewer.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Prices for pistol ammunition were mostly steady. Prices for rifle ammunition were steady across the board.

Prices for used pistols were mixed. Prices for used rifles were mixed.

LeT terrorist Saifullah met Hafiz Saeed twice
[NEWINDIANEXPRESS] NEW DELHI: Arrested Lashkar-e-Taiba
...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI...
terrorist Bahadur Ali alias Saifullah met Jamat-ul-Dawa (JuD) chief and one of the 26/11 criminal mastermind Hafiz Saeed
...founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its false-mustache offshoot Jamaat-ud-Dawa. The United Nations declared the JuD a terrorist organization in 2008 and Hafiz Saeed a terrorist as its leader. Hafiz, JuD and LeT are wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Pak intel apparatus, so that amounted to squat...
twice in a training camp in Pakistain, National Investigation Agency (NIA) said on Friday.

Saifullah during interrogation told the probing agency that he met Saeed twice during terror training and he was in regular touch with a Control Room in Pakistain Occupied Kashmire from where he was his handler Walid was instructing him to kill innocent civilians in the Kashmire Valley in India. He was code named A3 by the handler. Saifullah, a terrorist from Pak and a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba terror outfit, main motive to come to India was to spreading violence in Jammu and Kashmire, the agency said.

He also told interrogators that he has to keep fighting in Jammu and Kashmire and cannot come back to Pakistain. "It was suicidal mission for him," said a source in the agency.

A team of NIA officials led by a Deputy Inspector General took the custody of 22-year-old from Handwara court and brought him to Delhi for a further interrogation on Thursday. He has been brought to Delhi on a five-day NIA remand.

He told the agency that he had been hiding in the forests of Handwara and receiving infiltrating groups from Pakistain-Indian Kashmiree before sending them further into the Valley,.

"He was trained at a Lashkar camp in PoK, including in map reading and operating GPS devices," said a NIA officer adding that he had infiltrated into India with two others to take advantage of the unrest in Kashmire. In the laskhar camp he met the Hafiz Saeed.

"He had entered India with Saad bhai and Darda bhai," said the officer.

He also said that Saad bhai was an Ameer of the terror outfit and had undergone Daur-e-Khas training. Saifullah was trained in a terror camp in Chela Bandi in Muzaffarabad and also attended the Daur-e-Aam training after he learnt of the atrocities on Kashmiris in India.

The trio entered India with the help of a guide to the country. According to Saifullah, Saad and Darda bhai were killed in an encounter with security forces in on July 12. They were killed in separate encounters with security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara. "We are further probing into the matter," said the officer.

ISIS executes 24 after seizing Syrian village
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] ISIS has executed at least 24 civilians after seizing a village in northern Syria from a US-backed Kurdish-Arab alliance, a monitor said Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIS executed 24 civilians "in the last 24 hours" after taking Buyir from the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The village is located some 10 kilometers northwest of Manbij, a key waypoint between the Turkish border and the ISIS de facto capital of Raqqa city.

ISIS seized control of several villages in the countryside northwest of Manbij since launching a "fierce assault" on Thursday, according to the Observatory, which relies on sources inside Syria for its information.

The SDF, backed by air strikes from a US-led coalition, launched an offensive to retake Manbij from ISIS on May 31.

The alliance managed to enter the town but have since faced fierce opposition from the Death Eaters who have fought back with jacket wallahs and boom-mobiles.

More than 280,000 have been killed and millions displaced in Syria's five-year conflict.

Two dead in cross-border attack from Afghanistan
PESHAWAR: Two men belonging to the Kalash community were killed in a cross-border militant attack from Afghanistan on Friday.

“Around 30 militants with heavy weapons made an attempt to enter Pakistan near Bumburet Valley of Kalashan,” Chitral District Police Officer Asif Iqbal said.

The attack created panic among the locals. They rushed to the area of attack which provided the terrorists with an opportunity to flee with more than 300 goats.

In April this year, security forces repulsed a cross-border attack on a checkpost in Kurram tribal region that killed at least 16 Afghanistan-based militants

During a subsequent search operation, security forces claimed to have recovered bodies of 12 attackers from the area.

Turkey says Aleppo siege ‘unacceptable’
The siege on Aleppo by Syrian regime forces, which a number of world powers have objected to, was “sorrowful and unacceptable,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said late July 28. In a written statement, the ministry said eastern Aleppo had been under a full blockade for weeks, as the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and its supporters’ conducted intense attacks.

Pro-regime forces have surrounded Aleppo’s eastern districts since July 17, leaving an estimated 250,000 trapped without reliable access to food or medical aid.

“Airstrikes against Aleppo targeting civilians and civil infrastructure should be immediately stopped,” the ministry said.

Forcing millions of civilians to live in inhumane conditions in Aleppo and other regions of Syria should be stopped immediately and the safety of people in those regions and access to humanitarian aid should also be provided under U.N. supervision, it added.

Aid agencies also called on the Syrian government to end its encirclement of rebel-held east Aleppo.

U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura, meanwhile, urged Russia to let the United Nations take charge of the corridors.

“Our suggestion is to Russia to actually leave the corridors being established at their initiative to us,” he said. “How can you expect people to want to walk through a corridor, thousands of them, while there is shelling, bombing fighting?”
Per the Russians and Pencilneck, that's exactly the idea...
France, meanwhile, said corridors out of the city were not “a credible response to the situation” and residents should be able to receive aid at home.

Russia, a key ally of al-Assad, on July 28 announced the opening of humanitarian passages for civilians and surrendering fighters seeking to exit the city’s rebel-held eastern neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the U.S.-led coalition targeting a village in northern Syria held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) killed 28 civilians, including seven children. The observatory said aircraft belonging to the coalition struck the village of al-Ghandour, near Manbij, late on July 28.

The observatory’s chief, Rami Adurrahman, said another 13 people were killed in the strikes but that he could not say if they were ISIL fighters or civilians. Al-Ghandour is 24 kilometers northwest of the town of Manbij, a key hub in the extremist group’s Syria network and a supply route to ISIL’s de facto capital of Raqqa.

The U.S. military acknowledged July 28 that there may have been civilian deaths. U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. military operations in the Middle East, said it had “initiated an assessment following internal operational reporting that a strike today near Manbij, Syria may have resulted in civilian casualties.”

The strikes came a day after the coalition opened a formal investigation to determine whether its air strikes last week near Manbij claimed civilian lives.

Wasserman Schultz: 'Sometimes you just have to take one for the team'
[TheHill] Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the outgoing chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), said Thursday that "sometimes you just have to take one for the team."

'This has been a difficult week, there's no question about it," Wasserman Schultz said in remarks at a reception hosted by the National Jewish Democratic Council, the first time she's spoken publicly since announcing she would step down as chairwoman.

'It has been a remarkable team effort, and you know sometimes you just have to take one for the team, and that's OK, it's OK,' she said with a smile.
If Hillary wins Debbie Downer will end up working at the Clinton Foundation. You read it here first...
The incompetent DNC chief, who is also running for reelection to Congress in Florida, announced Sunday afternoon she would be stepping down at the end of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday.

Emails stolen in a hack of the DNC system that were leaked last weekend demonstrated suggested top Democratic officials sought to undermine Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders's campaign.

Uproar among Sanders supporters threatened to overshadow this week's party convention in Philadelphia, which has included a series of speeches from Democratic heavy hitters including Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), Vice President Biden, President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
To be fair (and there's no reason to be) the Sanderistas were going to be an in uproar anyway...
Wasserman Schultz essentially removed herself from the convention proceedings, first dropping a planned speech and ultimately deciding not to open the convention, either, in addition to resigning after the event. A Clinton campaign spokesperson had said Wasserman Schultz made the decision to commit seppuku step down to help facilitate a distraction-free convention.

The DNC email breach also interjected debate over foreign policy into the presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, with Democrats attributing the stolen emails to Russia and going after Trump's past commenting speaking warmly of Russia's leader.

Trump on Wednesday said he hoped Russia found Clinton's deleted personal emails from her time as secretary of State, which was widely interpreted by partisan, desperate Democrats as sanctioning Russian cyberattacks on a U.S. citizen.

Clinton's campaign criticized it as "a bridge too far," and Trump on Thursday said he was being "sarcastic."

'I can personally attest to how not funny it is," Wasserman Schultz told attendees Thursday. "We were hacked by Russian espionage organizations, and for a presidential candidate to encourage that to happen again, I mean, it's treasonous, it's seditious, it's unacceptable."
Which is why you left the DNC servers vulnerable to hacking. You were in charge, remember?

Two Paris attacks suspects extradited to France from Austria

cell that massacred 130 people in Gay Paree last November, a judicial source said.

The 29-year-old Algerian Adel Haddadi and the 35-year-old Pak Mohamad Usman were charged with "criminal conspiracy with terrorists", the source said of the men turned over earlier Friday by Austrian authorities.

Investigators believe they travelled to the Greek island of Leros on October 3 on the same boat full of refugees as two men who took part in the November 13 attacks.

Those two, thought to be Iraqis, blew themselves up outside the Stade de La Belle France stadium, one of a series of brazen assaults by around 10 people around the French capital.

But Haddadi and Usman were held up, detained by Greek authorities for 25 days because they had fake Syrian passports.

Once let go, they followed the main migrant trail and made it to Salzburg in western Austria at the end of November - after the Gay Paree attacks.

Afghanistan
Afghan cleric arrested for marrying six-year-old girl
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An elderly Afghan holy man has been tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
after he married a six-year-old girl, officials said Friday, in the latest case highlighting the scourge of child marriages in the war-battered country.

Mohammad Karim, said to be aged around 60, was held in central Ghor province as he claimed her parents gave him the girl as a "religious offering", officials said.

But they cited the family of the girl, believed to be in shock, as saying that she was kidnapped from western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province, bordering Iran.

"This girl does not speak, but repeats only one thing: ’I am afraid of this man’," said Masoom Anwari, head of the women affairs department in Ghor.

The girl is currently in a woman’s shelter in Ghor and her parents are on their way to the province to collect her, the local governor’s office said.

"Karim has been locked away
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
and our investigation is ongoing," said Abdul Hai Khatibi, the governor’s front man.

The arrest comes just days after a 14-year-old pregnant girl was burned to death in Ghor, in a case that sparked shock waves in Afghanistan.

The family of that girl, Zahra, said she was tortured and set alight by her husband’s family. But relatives of the teenager’s husband insisted her death was by self-immolation.

The incidents underscore rising incidents of child marriages in Afghanistan.

"In some regions because of insecurity and poverty the families marry off their daughters at a very early age to get rid of them," Sima Samar, head of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, told news hounds this month.

Afghan civil law sets the legal age of marriage at 16 for girls, yet 15 percent of Afghan women under 50 were married before their 15th birthday and almost half were married before the age of 18, according to Save the Children.

"So many children who are married off at a young age are deprived of their right to education, safety and the ability to make choices about their future," the international charity said this month.

"This is such a fundamental breach of a child’s basic rights."

The latest case comes after a young woman was stoned to death in Ghor last November after being accused of adultery.

And in March last year a woman named Farkhunda was savagely beaten and set ablaze in central Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
after being falsely accused of burning a Koran.

The mob killing triggered angry nationwide protests and drew global attention to the endemic violence facing Afghan women.

Hindu doctor found dead inside Civil Hospital Karachi
KARACHI: A young Hindu doctor on Friday was found dead inside Civil Hospital Karachi premises under mysterious circumstances.

"Dr. Anil Kumar, 32, was found dead inside the Intensive Care Unit-II of the surgical wing where he was performing his duty," said Eidgah Station House Office (SHO) Naeemudin.

"Kumar went inside surgical ICU early in the morning around 5:30am and was found dead three hours later," Naeemudin elaborated.

The police official added Kumar was discovered after he did not answer a knock on the door. The door was broken and he was found dead sitting on his chair. A syringe was found from the spot.

"He had administered an injection on his hand as it was bandaged," revealed the SHO.

The body was shifted to the hospital’s mortuary where doctors reserved his cause of death for chemical examination.

Drew Peterson gets 40 extra years for plot to kill prosecutor
[Chicago Tribune] As Drew Peterson wrapped up his 25-minute speech in court Friday, he turned in his chair and spoke directly to the prosecutor he tried to have killed.

"And Jim Glasgow, there was never any intent to have you killed," he said in a matter-of-fact tone, as prosecutors objected.

"That's all right," the former Bolingbrook police sergeant said, leaning back into his chair. "I'm done."

Moments later, Randolph County Judge Richard Brown sentenced Peterson to 40 years in prison.

Peterson's demeanor was markedly different from the last time he spoke in public, at his 2013 sentencing hearing for the murder of his third wife, when he shrieked his innocence and angrily accused Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow and Illinois State Police Sherlocks of railroading him.

Arabia
Rebels Renew Coup with Political Council
Riyadh, New York, Aden-Once again, Yemeni insurgents have violated Yemen’s constitution and international resolutions by announcing a unilateral agreement.

Houthis and Ali Abdullah Saleh have established a political council in a severe blow to the political solution called for by the international community in the country, which has been suffering from militias’ practices since September 2014.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, special envoy to the Secretary-General on Yemen, said that this development in the country contradicts with commitments made concerning the United Nations-led peace talks.

Farhan Haq, spokesman of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the “unilateral” decision obstructs the peace process and endangers the substantial progress made during the Kuwait talks.

He also described it as a clear violation of the Yemeni constitution and the provisions of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s initiative and its implementation mechanism.

Rajeh Badi, spokesperson of the Yemeni Government, downplayed the agreement struck between the two insurgent sides, telling Asharq Al-Awsat that this step showed that Houthis and Saleh’s forces don’t respect international efforts and the peace talks that took place in Kuwait.

Yemen’s Minister of Local Administration and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Relief Abdul-Raqib Saif Fath said that the rebels’ clear rejection of the international efforts of peace shows a state of confusion that precedes a political and military collapse.

From his part, Abdulmalik Al-Mekhlafi, Yemeni Foreign minister and head of the legitimate authority to Kuwait’s peace talks, urged the international community to pressure rebels on committing to the international resolutions and abiding by the requirements for peace in Yemen.

Mekhlafi added that Houthis and Saleh have successfully convinced the world that they are against peace and are responsible for the failure of the talks. He pointed that everyone knows who has waged war in the country and sought to destroy it despite the constant peace efforts showed by the legitimate authority.

Saudi Envoy to the United Nations Abdullah Al Muallimi told Asharq Al-Awsat that the U.N. is going ahead with the implementation of U.N. Resolution 2216 concerning the Yemeni crisis, and asserted that rebels would never be able to evade it.

Reacting to the move, Anwar Gargash, UAE minister of State for Foreign Affairs, tweeted: “The setting up of a political council is a desperate attempt by those who turned against the legitimate government and dragged Yemen to violence.

“Their attempt to dodge the Kuwait negotiations has been exposed.

“It has been made clear to the international community that Houthis, who represent less than one percent of the population, have become addicted to power and wealth, and the new political council comes in that context.”

Man shoots wife, sister-in-law
[DAWN] RAWALPINDI: A man allegedly shot and killed his sister-in-law and injured his ex-wife, who had filed a petition to dissolve her marriage (khula), in Mohalla Feroozpura in the Banni police area on Thursday, police said.

Talat Noreen, 22, sustained multiple bullet injuries after allegedly being shot by her ex-husband Waqas Haider, and was shifted to Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
Hospital (BBH) where her condition was stated to be critical. Ms Noreen’s elder sister, Asma Noreen, 34, was killed in the attack.

The preliminary police investigation suggested that Asma and her two daughters, aged nine and four, were living with her stepsister Ms Noreen in a rented home in Mohalla Feroozpura since Ms Noreen filed a petition to dissolve her marriage with Mr Haider.

Police said both women were followed home by Mr Haider from a court proceeding in Taxila, where their mother lives and where Ms Noreen had filed her petition. The police said both the victims and the alleged killer were on the court premises that morning, and after he followed them home he spoke to them for around 15 minutes.

"The khula case filed by Ms Talat Noreen against her husband was decided by the court of law today, as the Nikah nama and CNIC was found at the scene of the murder," Inspector Tufail of the Banni police told Dawn.

He said Mr Haider shot his ex-wife and his sister-in-law at around 5pm and then fled. As a result, Asma was killed on the spot while Ms Noreen was severely injured.

"Waqas Haider could be seen clearly in CCTV images while fleeing and brandishing his pistol. The police team is after him and will arrest him soon," Inspector Tufail said. Both victims were shifted to the BBH, where Asma was pronounced dead.

The police said the women’s parents were contacted but they refused to own their daughters. Police said they had disowned their daughters because the elder sister was divorced while the younger was in the process of doing the same.

Police said the women’s parents also refused to follow the case or own the body of their deceased daughter. They said the parents told them both their daughters had married against their will and told the police to bury the body wherever they wanted.

FBI, Justice Department investigating possible hack of Clinton campaign
Several related posts by Fred and Besoeker.
[KFOR] The FBI and Justice Department are investigating a possible computer hack of the Clinton campaign in addition to its examination of intrusions of other Democratic Party organizations, two law enforcement officials said Friday.

The intrusion was discovered by private investigators hired by the campaign, according to one of the law enforcement officials. The private investigators believe it is similar to the Democratic National Committee hack, but federal investigators are still working to determine the scope and nature of the intrusion, the official explained.

The campaign intrusion is the latest in a series of Democratic party organizations who have had system breaches that are being investigated -- including the DNC and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC).

The Justice Department’s national security division, which was already investigating the DNC intrusion, is handling the investigation because of the believed similarities, one of the officials explained.

There is strong evidence indicating the cyber intrusion of the DNC was the work of hackers working on behalf of Russian intelligence, US officials said this week.

... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Bainbridge Colby ...
’s campaign was hacked as part of a broad cyber attack on Democratic political organizations, people familiar with the matter told Rooters.

The latest attack, which was disclosed to Rooters on Friday, follows reports of two other hacks on the Democratic National Committee and the party’s fundraising committee for candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives.

The U.S. Department of Justice national security division is investigating whether cyber hacking attacks on Democratic political organizations threatened U.S. security, sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.

The involvement of the Justice Department’s national security division is a sign that the B.O. regime has concluded that the hacking was state sponsored, individuals with knowledge of the investigation said.

The Clinton campaign, based in Brooklyn, had no immediate comment and referred Rooters to a comment from earlier this week by campaign senior policy adviser Jake Sullivan criticizing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and calling the hacking "a national security issue."

The Department of Justice had no comment.

It was not immediately clear what information on the Clinton campaign’s computer system hackers would have been able to access.

FBI warned Clinton campaign last spring of cyberattack

The FBI warned the Clinton campaign that it was a target of a cyberattack last March, just weeks before the Democratic National Committee discovered it had been penetrated by hackers it now believes were working for Russian intelligence, two sources who have been briefed on the matter told Yahoo News.

In a meeting with bigwigs at the campaign’s Brooklyn headquarters, FBI agents laid out concerns that cyberhackers had used so-called spear-phishing emails as part of an attempt to penetrate the campaign’s computers, the sources said. One of the sources said agents conducting a national security investigation asked the Clinton campaign to turn over internal computer logs as well as the personal email addresses of senior campaign officials. But the campaign, through its lawyers, declined to provide the data, deciding that the FBI’s request for sensitive personal and campaign information data was too broad and intrusive, the source said.

A second source who had been briefed on the matter and who confirmed the Brooklyn meeting said agents provided no specific information to the campaign about the identity of the cyberhackers or whether they were associated with a foreign government. The source said the campaign was already aware of attempts to penetrate its computers and had taken steps to thwart them, emphasizing that there is still no evidence that the campaign’s computers had actually been successfully penetrated.

The Grand Turk
Erdogan slams US reaction to failed coup
Dear, dear Sultan Recep I: Sadly, you are merely the sultan of The Sick Man of Europe, and so all that shouting and stamping your feet will accomplish nothing. By this you know that Allah does not approve, else he would have re-created the world such that your merest whim was command the world over.
Turkey is all he has, unless he incorporates Syria. Then he'll have a larger shithole sick man as an empire...
[MSN] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
's president slammed the United States on Friday, claiming it was not standing firmly against a failed military coup and accused it of harboring the plot's alleged criminal mastermind, as a government crackdown in the coup's aftermath strained Turkey's ties with key allies.

Turkey has demanded the United States extradite Fethullah Gulen, a holy man living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania whom it accuses of being behind the violent July 15 coup attempt that left 290 people dead. It is accusing Western nations of not extending sufficient support to its efforts to counter further threats from followers of the Gulen movement, which it says have infiltrated the country's state institutions.

Turkey considers Gulen's movement a terrorist organization. Gulen has denied any prior knowledge of the plot and says his movement espouses interfaith dialogue. The United States has asked Turkey for evidence of his involvement, and said the U.S. extradition process must take its course.

"Instead of thanking this nation that quashed the coup in the name of democracy, on the contrary, you are taking sides with the coup plotters," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
said in an angry speech Friday at a police special forces headquarters in Ankara. The facility was bombed and fired upon during the attempted coup, and 47 coppers were killed.

"The putschist is already in your country," Erdogan said.

The president also lashed out at an American military official who expressed concern
...meaning the brow was mildly wrinkled, the eyebrows drawn slightly together, and a thoughtful expression assumed, not that anything was actually done or indeed that any thought was actually expended...
that the failed coup may have longer-term effects on the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State

Baltic Dry Index falls to 656, down 9 points
Today, Friday, July 29 2016, the Baltic Dry Index decreased by 9 points, reaching 656 points.

Baltic Dry Index is compiled by the London-based Baltic Exchange and covers prices for transported cargo such as coal, grain and iron ore.

The index is based on a daily survey of agents all over the world. Baltic Dry hit a temporary peak on May 20, 2008, when the index hit 11,793.

The lowest level ever reached was on Wednesday the 10th of February 2016, when the index dropped to 290 points.

Thursday's report

The Baltic Exchange’s main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, fell on Thursday on weaker capesize, panamax and supramax vessel rates.

The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, was down 14 points, or 2.06 percent, at 665 points.

The capesize index fell 23 points, or 2.86 percent, to 780 points.
Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, were down $193 at $5,530.

The panamax index was down 33 points, or 4.39 percent, at 719 points.

Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry coal or grain cargoes of about 60,000 to 70,000 tonnes, decreased $263 to $5,757.

Among smaller vessels, the supramax index fell 8 points to 676 points, while the handysize index rose 4 points to 396 points.

Terror Networks
Terrorist madness
[DAWN] Among some shades of opinion, the tendency to investigate the psychological make-up of a killer is a variety of denialism, a studied refusal to condemn religion as the guiding force behind mass murder. This attitude in turn feeds into perpetuating the notion that all Moslems are potential terrorists.

It should not be particularly surprising that the latter assumption ideally suits the purposes of the holy warrior Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group. The fact that Germany has lately allowed in hundreds of thousands of mostly Moslem refugees militates mightily against the notion of a West implacably hostile to Islam. If even a couple of refugees can be persuaded to perpetrate acts of indiscriminate violence, the hostility towards them can reasonably be expected to spread well beyond murderous Moslem outfits such as the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

The axe attack on a train in Wurzberg by a teenage Afghan refugee (some news outlets claimed he was actually a Pak) on July 18 and, in the wake of Sonboly’s outrage, a pair of attacks by Syrian refugees -- one of them killed a woman with a machete and injured five other people, while the other detonated a boom jacket near a music festival and, thankfully, succeeded in killing only himself -- appeared, insofar as they may have been guided by IS operatives, to be directed towards propelling AfD’s agenda.

Much the same could be said about the singularly appalling attack in Nice on Bastille Day by Mohammed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, a French resident from Tunisia, who ploughed his massive truck through crowds celebrating the national holiday, leaving more than 80 people -- a third of them Moslems -- dead and injuring many more.

Unlike last year’s terrorist attacks in Gay Paree, which tended to unite the French more in sorrow than in anger, the Nice outrage, amid a state of emergency, has more directly prompted an upsurge in antagonism toTerrorist madnesswards the government of Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...
, who responded crassly to the massacre by decreeing a more concerted military assault on IS redoubts in Iraq and Syria.

Should Marine Le Pen win the next French presidential election, a substantial proportion of the blame could be ladled on to IS, but Hollande won’t get away unscathed.

Europe’s far-right forces are effectively the other side of the IS coin. They may have divergent motivations, but the essential idea is to perpetuate the belief that there is little or no space for Moslems in Europe. The neo-Nazis are determined that there should be no place for Moslems in Europe. IS is bent upon ensuring that Europe is no place for Moslems, unless it is subsumed into the fantasy of a caliphate -- whose territorial reach in Iraq and Syria is slowly diminishing.

There are also reasonable grounds, meanwhile, for questioning the dichotomy between extremism and psychological dysfunction. The latter can, obviously, operate independently of the former, and the vast majority of people who diverge from what is assumed to be the norm in that sphere are obviously harmless, in the same way as are most Moslems. But can murderous fanaticism be distinguished from a psychotic disorder?

Such a conclusion may complicate the task of dedicated anti-terrorists, but it’s not one they can afford to ignore.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Court strikes down North Carolina voter ID law
[POLITICO] A federal appeals court has struck down North Carolina’s voter identification law, holding that it was "passed with racially discriminatory intent."
I wonder how that was proven ?
The ruling also invalidated limits the same state law placed in 2013 on early voting, same-day registration, out-of-precinct voting, and preregistration.

The three judges assigned to the case -- all Democratic appointees -- were unanimous that the Republican-controlled North Carolina legislature violated the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act three years ago by enacting the measure requiring voters to show certain types of photo ID at the polls.

"The record makes clear that the historical origin of the challenged provisions in this statute is not the innocuous back-and-forth of routine partisan struggle that the State suggests and that the district court accepted," Judge Diana Motz wrote on behalf of Judges James Wynn and Henry Floyd. "Rather, the General Assembly enacted them in the immediate aftermath of unprecedented African American voter participation in a state with a troubled racial history and racially polarized voting. The district court clearly erred in ignoring or dismissing this historical background evidence, all of which supports a finding of discriminatory intent."

Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
city earlier this evening, leaving a senior parliamentary official dead.

The incident took place in Kote Sangi area of the city with the preliminary reports suggesting the blast was triggered as a result of a magnetic bomb.

The official has been identified as head of the human resources department who was killed along with another individual and two more were maimed.

No group has so far grabbed credit behind the incident.

This comes as one person sustained injuries in a similar incident in Khair Khana area of the city on Thursday afternoon.

The incident took place while the security forces were busy defusing a magnetic bomb planted in a vehicle.

NIEHS Study: Common female hygienic practice may cause ovarian cancer
(Reuters Health) - Women who reported douching almost doubled their risk of developing ovarian cancer, a national U.S. study shows.

Prior studies have linked douching, or vaginal washing with a device, to yeast infections, pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancies. Researchers have also found associations between douching and cervical cancer, reduced fertility, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

But the new National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences study is the first to tie cancer of the ovaries to the procedure routinely practiced by millions of American women.

Joelle Brown, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco said that although she knew about other health problems associated with douching, the link between douching and ovarian cancer took her by surprise.

"While most doctors and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists strongly recommend that women do not douche, many women continue to douche because they falsely perceive douching to have positive health benefits, such as increased cleanliness," she told Reuters Health by email. Brown was not involved in the current study.
