The U.S. Navy's New Stealth Nuclear Missile Submarines: Everything We Know
The Navy is accelerating and increasing design support for the development and construction of its new Columbia-Class nuclear armed ballistic missile submarines -- to ensure progress toward the goal of engineering the most lethal, high-tech and advanced ballistic missile submarines the world has ever seen.

Designed to serve well into the 2080s and beyond, Navy and General Dynamics Electric Boat developers are hoping to leverage years of science and technology development to best position the new submarine to enter service by 2031.
Apparently the Navy thinks we'll be around that long. And North Korea won't be a problem. Nor Iran.
The increased support was announced by the Department of Defense as a $203 million modification to an existing deal between the Navy and General Dynamics Electric Boat to begin manufacture of 17 new tactical missile tubes able to fire nuclear-armed Trident II D5 missiles.

A prior 95-million modification to a Naval Sea Systems Command deal with Electric Boat, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, is a key part of the Navy's broader deterrence strategy to ensure a second-strike nuclear ability from beneath the ocean around the world in the event of a catastrophic first-strike on the continental US.

The effort, which has been preceded by "tube and hull" forging work underway for several years, is part of a collaborative US-UK Common Missile Compartment program.

The US and UK are together immersed in a common missile compartment effort. In fact, the US and UK have been buying parts together for the common missile compartment and working on a $770 million contract with General Dynamics’ Electric Boat. This recent contract modification includes foreign military sales to the United Kingdom. Work will be performed in Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and is expected to be completed by December 2023. United Kingdom foreign military sales funding in the amount of $22,957,933 will be obligated at the time of award, a Pentagon statement said.

The US plans to build 12 new Columbia-Class Submarines, each with 16 missile tubes, and the UK plans to build four nuclear-armed ballistic submarines, each with 12 missile tubes.

Earlier this year, ship specifications for the new Columbia-Class submarines were completed and the program is now in detailed design phase and initial production contract, service officials said.

In acquisition terms, development of the new submarines have passed what's termed "Milestone B," clearing the way beyond early development toward ultimate production. Production decisions are known as "Milestone C."

"The program was approved to proceed to Milestone B Jan. 4, authorizing it to enter into the engineering and manufacturing development phase and permitting the transition from preliminary design to detail design," William Couch, spokesman for Naval Sea Systems Command, told Scout Warrior earlier this year.

Ultimately, the Navy hopes to build and operate as many as 12 new nuclear-armed submarines, to be in service by the early 2040s and serve well into the 2080s.

The Navy has begun early construction and prototyping on a new class of nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines designed to help ensure global peace by deploying massive destructive power under the sea.

Columbia-Class submarines are scheduled to begin construction by 2021. Requirements work, technical specifications and early prototyping have already been underway at General Dynamics Electric Boat.

Designed to be 560-feet‐ long and house 16 Trident II D5 missiles fired from 44-foot-long missile tubes, ORP will be engineered as a stealthy, high-tech nuclear deterrent able to quietly patrol the global undersea domain.

The new submarines are being designed for 42 years of service life.

Construction on the first submarine in this new class is slated to be finished up by 2028, with initial combat patrols beginning in 2031, service officials said.

Strategic Nuclear Deterrence

Detailed design for the first Columbia-Class submarine is happening now. The new submarines are being engineered to quietly patrol the undersea domain and function as a crucial strategic deterrent, assuring a second strike or retaliatory nuclear capability in the event of nuclear attack.

The Navy is only building 12 Columbia-Class submarines to replace 14 existing Ohio-class nuclear-armed boats because the new submarines are being built with an improved nuclear core reactor that will better sustain the submarines, Navy officials have said.

As a result, the Columbia-Class submarines will be able to serve a greater number of deployments than the ships they are replacing and not need a mid-life refueling in order to complete 42 years of service.

With the life of ship reactor core, there is not a need for mid-life refueling, Navy developers explained.

By engineering a "life-of-ship" reactor core, the service is able to build 12 SSBNs able to have the same at sea presence as the current fleet of 14 ballistic missile submarines. The plan is intended to save the program 40 billion savings in acquisition and life-cycle cost, Navy developers said.

Electric Boat and the Navy are already progressing on early prototype work connecting missile tubes to portions of the hull, officials said. Called integrated tube and hull forging, the effort is designed to weld parts of the boat together and assess the ability to manufacture key parts of the submarine before final integration.

In 2012, General Dynamics Electric Boat was awarded a five-year research and development deal for the Ohio Replacement submarines with a value up to $1.85 billion. The contract contains specific incentives for lowering cost and increasing manufacturing efficiency, Navy and Electric Boat officials said.

Next-Generation Technology

Columbia-Class submarines are being designed with a series of next-generation technologies, many of them from the Virginia-Class attack submarine. Leveraging existing systems from current attack submarines allows the Columbia-Class program to integrate the most current technologies and systems while, at the same time, saving the developmental costs of beginning a new effort, officials said.

The Columbia-Class will utilize Virginia-class’s fly-by-wire joystick control system and large-aperture bow array sonar. The automated control fly-by-wire navigation system is also a technology that is on the Virginia-Class attack submarines. A computer built-into the ship's control system uses algorithms to maintain course and depth by sending a signal to the rudder and the stern.

Sonar technology work by sending out an acoustic ping and then analyzing the return signal in order to discern shape, location or dimensions of an undersea threat.

Navy experts explained that the large aperture bow array is water backed with no dome and very small hydrophones able to last for the life of the ship; the new submarines do not have an air-backed array, preventing the need to replace transducers every 10-years.

The submarines combat systems from Virginia-class attack submarines, consisting of electronic surveillance measures, periscopes, radios and computer systems, are also being integrated into the new submarines.

The shafts of the new submarines are being built to last up to 10 or 12 years in order to synchronize with the ships maintenance schedule. Existing shafts only last six to eight years, developers said.

The Columbia-Class will also use Virginia-class’s next-generation communications system, antennas and mast. For instance, what used to be a periscope is now a camera mast connected to fiber-optic cable, enabling crew members in the submarine to see images without needing to stand beneath the periscope. This allows designers to move command and control areas to larger parts of the ship and still have access to images from the camera mast, Electric Boat and Navy officials said.

The Columbia-Class submarine are also engineering a new electric motor for the submarine which will turn the shaft and the rotor for the propulsion system. The new motor will make propulsion more efficient and potentially bring tactical advantages as well.

In total, the Navy hopes to buy 12 of the new submarines to serve into 2085 and beyond.

Production for the lead ship in a planned fleet of 12 Ohio Replacement submarines is expected to cost $12.4 billion -- $4.8 billion in non-recurring engineering or development costs and $7.6 billion in ship construction, Navy officials have said.

The Navy hopes to build Ohio Replacement submarine numbers two through 12 for $4.9 billion each in 2010 dollars.

#1  Yeah, according to the contractor, it'll be awesome, with an ice cream maker to boot.
Kinda like the F35... and the B2... and the LCS... and the CVX Gerald Ford (Catapults are a serious problem. As in break aircraft, and all shut down together.)
I'm thinking the contractors have too many salesmen and not enough engineers. But that's just me.

Iraq
"Stench of death" from bodies of ISIS fighters fills Mosul
Iraqi forces opened exit routes this weekend for hundreds of civilians to escape Mosul. Iraqi forces backed by the U.S. military are making a final push to drive ISIS out of a city now in ruins.
It will give the Iraqis plenty of work to have their ISIS slaves do after this is all over.
U.S.-backed Iraqi special forces said Sunday they've retaken two-thirds of the Old City, but it's come at a cost.
Well, yeah. That's the whole idea if you're ISIS trying to defend yourself.
Commanders finally decided that the suffering of tens of thousands of civilians still trapped inside this brutal battle outweighed of any hope of leaving the Old City intact -- especially after ISIS robbed Iraqi forces of a symbolic victory by blowing up the al-Nuri mosque, where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared the creation of the so-called caliphate more than three years ago.
As sad as it is, it seems to me that generally there are fewer overall casualties if you break them with an overwhelmingly violent first strike.
CBS News entered the Old City with Iraqi special forces, the very forces that broke through ISIS defenses and started advancing toward the mosque.

CBS News and the special forces drove until the streets got so narrow we had leave the protection our humvees behind and get out on foot as gunfire and mortars rang out in every direction.
Looks like the Iraqi forces learned a lesson or two from the US Marines during the operation to take Falluja.
The stench of death from the bodies of ISIS fighters rotting in the sweltering heat filled the air.
Smells like . . . victory!
As you walk around the streets of the Old City, you just get an indication of the damage and destruction. Whole neighborhoods have ceased to exist after eight months of fighting - and it's not over yet.

General Abdul Ghani al-Assadi said they're starting to face female ISIS fighters on the battlefield for the first time.
Great. Bomb them, too.
"It's their ultimate point of weakness now," he said. "But they're also the women of ISIS, so they have the same ideology, that's why they're fighting."
And that's exactly why ISIS families don't need to be given any quarter now or after this is all over.
The Iraqi military has begun opening exit routes for shell-shocked residents to flee the Old City, with the U.N. warning of a rising civilian death toll and the "unimaginable" risks facing those trapped inside.
Especially if you're an ISIS wife.
As the battle enters its final phase, Iraqi soldiers are not locked in a fight against ISIS holdouts -- but a fight against time.
Before civilians are killed, die of disease or starve to death, I assume.

Auto Travel Up - Unexpectedly
[Rooters] Motorists logged 1.2 percent more miles on U.S. roads and highways in April compared with the same month last year, according to U.S. government data released on Tuesday, keeping pace to break last year's record volumes.
1.2% April '16 compared to April '17.
Motorists have traveled 1.01 trillion miles on U.S. roads and highways this year through April, a 1.5 percent increase over the same stretch last year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
But 1.5% for the first four months of this year, compared to last year.
The sustained strength in driving volumes is a good sign for refiners as the U.S. driving season kicks off in earnest.

U.S. warship stayed on deadly collision course despite warning-container ship captain
A U.S. warship struck by a container vessel in Japanese waters failed to respond to warning signals or take evasive action before a collision that killed seven of its crew, according to a report of the incident by the Philippine cargo ship's captain.

Multiple U.S. and Japanese investigations are under way into how the guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald and the much larger ACX Crystal container ship collided in clear weather south of Tokyo Bay in the early hours of June 17.

In the first detailed account from one of those directly involved, the cargo ship's captain said the ACX Crystal had signalled with flashing lights after the Fitzgerald "suddenly" steamed on to a course to cross its path.
So why does the subsequent course the ship took appear to be that of an autopilot?
The container ship steered hard to starboard (right) to avoid the warship, but hit the Fitzgerald 10 minutes later at 1:30 a.m., according to a copy of Captain Ronald Advincula's report to Japanese ship owner Dainichi Investment Corporation that was seen by Reuters.

The U.S. Navy declined to comment and Reuters was not able to independently verify the account.

The collision tore a gash below the Fitzgerald's waterline, killing seven sailors in what was the greatest loss of life on a U.S. Navy vessel since the USS Cole was bombed in Yemen's Aden harbour in 2000.

Those who died were in their berthing compartments, while the Fitzgerald's commander was injured in his cabin, suggesting that no alarm warning of an imminent collision was sounded.

A spokesman for the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet in Yokosuka, the Fitzgerald's home port, said he was unable to comment on an ongoing investigation.

The incident has spurred six investigations, including two internal hearings by the U.S. Navy and a probe by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) on behalf of the National Transportation Safety Board. The Japan Transport Safety Board, the JCG and the Philippines government are also conducting separate investigations.

Spokesmen from the Japan Coast Guard (JCG), U.S. Coast Guard and ship owner, Dainichi Invest, also declined to comment. Reuters was not able to contact Advincula, who was no longer in Japan.

The investigations will examine witness testimony and electronic data to determine how a naval destroyer fitted with sophisticated radar could be struck by a vessel more than three times its size.

Another focus of the probes has been the length of time it took the ACX Crystal to report the collision. The JCG says it was first notified at 2:25 a.m., nearly an hour after the accident.

In his report, the ACX Crystal's captain said there was "confusion" on his ship's bridge, and that it turned around and returned to the collision site after continuing for 6 nautical miles (11 km).

Shipping data in Thomson Reuters Eikon shows that the ACX Crystal, chartered by Japan's Nippon Yusen KK, made a complete U-turn between 12:58 a.m. and 2:46 a.m.

What are the US Navy's protocols for 'close transit' on the high seas? Isn't there a requirement for some command level to be in attendance?

This is the transcript of a radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations 10-10-95.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.[2]

#5  Guy driving the container boat says the other guy was at fault. Big shocker there.
Just as an aside, why is everyone suprised that a DDG that's semi-stealthy, to visible and radar, is hard to see on visible, in the dark, and on radar.
I thought that was the point.
Posted by: ed in texas || 06/26/2017 21:39 Comments || Top||

#6  Note to Skid: Yeah, they have the OOD, officer of the deck, who's basically in charge of driving the boat. Even when the captain comes on the bridge, he has to assume control, hence the statement "Captain has the deck".
US Navy captains have in their stateroom a monitor screen, usually set to duplicate of the main nav screen on the bridge.
What I don't know is the status of DDG radar for ordinary navigation; you can't use those big phased array SPY's for that, you'd fry everything between you and the horizon, or so it would seem.
Posted by: ed in texas || 06/26/2017 21:50 Comments || Top||

#7  According to Wikipedia, the Fitzgerald has two surface search/navigation radars for exactly this sort of thing. The Fitzgerald should have been tracking the ACX Crystal for a long time before the collision.

As I understand the nautical rules of the road, it was the Fitzgerald's responsibility to avoid the Crystal, since the container ship was approaching from starboard.

High Court reinstates Trump travel ban, will hear arguments
[WAPO] WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court is letting the Trump administration mostly enforce its 90-day ban on travelers from six mostly Muslim countries, overturning lower court orders that blocked it.

The action Monday is a victory for President Donald Trump in the biggest legal controversy of his young presidency.

The court did leave one category of foreigners protected, those "with a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States," the court said in an unsigned opinion.

The justices will hear arguments in the case in October.

Pelosi - Hundreds of Thousands Will Die
In an interview on "CBS This Morning," the California Democrat said while the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has not yet released its cost estimate of the measure, she can already predict one major effect.

"We do know that many more people, hundreds of thousands of people, will die if this bill passes," Pelosi said.
But everyone will live forever if we defeat it!
Pelosi, 77, said there's no room to fix the legislation and instead Democrats and Republicans should focus on improving Obamacare, "instead of sabotaging it," she said.
Reducing the burden on taxpayers is sabotage of Obamacare - I get it.
"These bills, systemically, structurally, they are very, very harmful to the American people," she said. "They will raise costs, with fewer benefits, have an age tax...they will undermine Medicare, they will throw millions of people, tens of millions of people, off."
Throw them off? A cliff, Madame Speaker? Have you read the bill yet? Can't the Pubs pass it to read what's in it?
Democrats, she said, have to "fight for our lives and the lives of many people" in the U.S. this week to defeat the Senate bill.
Just not fight for the taxpayers.
Meanwhile, Pelosi dismissed calls by a select few House Democrats who said last week that she should step aside from her leadership position in the wake of two more special election losses last week.

"I'm a master legislator," she said. "I'm experienced in terms of knowing the institutional memory of the Congress. If Hillary Clinton had won, I might have gone home. But with Donald Trump in the White House, with a Republican majority in Congress, no way."
Institutional memory of Congress? The mind boggles.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Today's Johnson Hearing Glossed Over One of the FBI's Most Epic Fails
Failure? What failure? Befehl ist Befehl mein herr!
[TPM] This morning former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson testified before the House committee investigating Russia’s 2016 election subversion campaign. In the course of the hearing we heard the jarring information that Johnson only heard about the initial hacking into the DNC network sometime in 2016, months after the FBI first learned of the intrusion in the summer of 2015. Johnson said he was told that the FBI had contacted the DNC about the intrusion but was told "they don’t want our help."

Moving down a bit:

As a flabbergasted Podesta explained two days later, it is astonishing that the FBI had learned that Russia had compromised the computer networks of one of the country’s two main political parties and was content to have a single agent leave messages with someone at the DNC’s tech support help line to try to sound the alarm. It’s simply astonishing, and even more so since the FBI, as late as December was still in CYA mode spinning the story to reporters as the DNC’s fail.
Ah yes, the "flabbergasted Podesta."
As I said above, it’s not clear to me that this is more than a mix of incompetence and indifference on the part of the FBI and just an unfortunate chain of events. But it’s a critical part of the story, a major ball the FBI dropped – while devoting vast resources to the Clinton email probe – which gave the Russian subversion campaign critical months to do its work before the US government took real cognizance of what was happening.
Emphasis added

Related at Breitbart: Failure, mistakes, errors, the odious Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) now blames a man some call Soetoro.

#1  But it’s a critical part of the story, a major ball the FBI dropped – while devoting vast resources to the Clinton email probe

No 'ball was dropped.' The Russian hacking would have been discreetly handled in the early months of a Hillary Clinton presidency. Absolutely no need to fuel the dangers of her homebrew server and criminal mismandling of classified documents at such a critial, pre-inaugural moment.

The DNC wanted no part of an investigation which would highlight Clinton's misdeeds, and neither did that man some call Soetoro.

Director Comey and the FBI were dutifully compliant. They checked the 'given fair warnings' notifications box, and quietly exited the Kabuki stage as instructed.

A bit strange the Russians would not have been interested in hacking Republicans as well. Of course if one were hacking under the guise of a dastardly, evil Russian, perhaps that activity should be left alone. No need to terminate those useful feeds.

The Russian hacking meme was to come in handy much later as a key component of the Deep State 'regime change' strategy.

Victor Davis Hanson: The Architecture of Regime Change
[Hanson Papers] The ’Resistance’ is using any and all means -- lies, leaks, lawbreaking, and violence -- to overturn the results of the 2016 election.

The problem with the election of President Donald J. Trump was not just that he presented a roadblock to an ongoing progressive revolution. Instead, unlike recent Republican presidential nominees, he was indifferent to the cultural and political restraints on conservative pushback -- ironic given how checkered Trump’s own prior conservative credentials are. Trump brawled in a way McCain or Romney did not. He certainly did not prefer losing nobly to winning ugly.

Even more ominously, Trump found a seam in the supposedly invincible new progressive electoral paradigm of Barack Obama. He then blew it apart -- by showing the nation that Obama’s identity-politics voting bloc was not transferrable to most other Democratic candidates, while the downside of his polarization of the now proverbial clingers most assuredly was. To her regret, Hillary Clinton learned that paradox when the deplorables and irredeemables of the formerly blue-wall states rose up to cost her the presidency.

And now?

We are witnessing a desperate putsch to remove Trump before he can do any more damage to the Obama project. Political, journalistic, and cultural elites of a progressive coastal culture aim at destroying the Trump presidency before it can finish its full four-year term.

The branches of this insidious coup d’état are quite unlike anything our generation has ever witnessed.

But a coup d’état or 'regime change' strategy widely used throughout Latin America, Africa, and the ME for many decades.

Ray Kelly: Attacks in Europe are the ‘new normal' now
[NY Post] European countries are "paying the price" for their failure to coordinate with each other to stop terror attacks, former NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said on Sunday.

Kelly called the attacks "the new normal in Europe now" during an interview on "The Cat’s Roundtable" on AM 970 radio.

"They don’t communicate with each other on the level that they should," he said. "They are paying the price for that."

Kelly said many European nations remain hostile toward one another due to historical tensions. "They are not willing to give up information about sources and methods to other countries in the European Union," he said.

Government
Scalia called Obamacare ‘SCOTUScare' and warned it might endure ‐ and he was right
[LI] With the House having passed a healthcare bill, and the Senate close to passing a version, there is a lot of debate over the specifics of the bills.

Shameless Democrats like Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders portray Republicans as setting out to kill tens of thousands of Americans. In the wake of the shooting of Republican Congressmen by a Sanders-supporter spouting similar talking points, the false death claims are nothing short of incitement to violence

Republican politicians are falling all over themselves to portray the bills as repeal and replace, but the Republican effort more fairly is an attempt to alter Obamacare. The law has had almost 7 years to work its way into the fabric of the economy and health care system and to expand its reach. Understanding how politically painful true repeal will be, Republicans are shying away, as Yuval Levin correctly assesses in National Review:
The case for repeal was strongest in the three or four years between the enactment and implementation of Obamacare. As more time passes since the beginning of implementation three and a half years ago, and more people’s lives become intertwined with the program for good and bad, the case for addressing Obamacare’s immense deficiencies by repeal weakens as a practical matter in favor of a case for taking them on by alteration.

The essence of Obamacare, that government has to provide healthcare for all and that all have right to look first and foremost to government for healthcare, is so deeply entrenched at this point, that Republicans don’t have the stomach to unwind that paradigm.

Israel Strikes Targets in Syria for 2nd Day
[Townhall] JERUSALEM (AP) -- The Israeli military on Sunday said it attacked a series of targets belonging to the Syrian military, after several projectiles from neighboring Syria landed in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights for a second day.

The military said it targeted two Syrian artillery positions and an ammunitions truck. There were no immediate reports of casualties. But as an added precaution, the military instructed Israeli civilians from gathering in open areas in the border area.

It was the second straight day that Israel responded to what it has described as errant fire from Syria. Israel has tried to stay out of the six-year civil war in Syria and refrained from taking sides, but has responded to spillover fire on numerous occasions.

Israel also is believed to have carried out airstrikes on suspected weapons shipments to its archenemy Hezbollah, whose fighters are in Syria backing government forces.

"Our policy is clear: We will not tolerate any spillover or trickle whatsoever -- neither mortars nor rockets, from any front," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet on Sunday. "We will respond strongly to any attack on our territory or our citizens."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Call this bluff: UN threatens to boot US if Trump doesn't play ball
[Michelle Malkin] The response to this should simply be "OK, good luck with that":
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned the Trump administration on Tuesday that if the United States disengages from many issues confronting the international community it will be replaced -- and that won’t be good for America or for the world.

Guterres made clear to reporters at his first press conference here since taking the reins of the United Nations on Jan. 1 that proposed cuts in U.S. funding for the U.N. would be disastrous and create "an unsolvable problem to the management of the U.N."

But the U.N. chief stressed that he is not afraid to stand up to President Donald Trump, citing his vocal opposition to the U.S. leader’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement. He said the mobilization of U.S. business and civil society in support or the climate deal is "a signal of hope that we very much encourage."
Nothin’ like a stern "responsibility" lecture from a global body that lets Iran sit on a women’s rights board. And I’m quite certain that the one thing that has never been and never will be uttered by a U.N. leader in any serious fashion is "your money’s no good here anymore."

I’ll start to believe the empty threats the day moving vans are spotted in front of UN headquarters in New York City, but they won’t be. Why? Because, to quote a famous saying, "that’s where the money is."

How cute -- he thinks he is negotiating. But nobody is even pretending to abide by the unenforceable Paris Agreement now, as far as I am aware, despite the posturing. And with the US a permanent member with veto power of the UN Security Council, the possibility of replacing Mr. Guterres less than six months into his five year tenure would be interesting to explore.

Or we could take our 20% of the UN budget and walk away, which would no doubt cause the thing to collapse.

Arizona is so hot right now planes can't take off and plastic and paint is melting
[Olympian] Arizona is no stranger to heat waves. But even by natives’ own high standards, the past week has been scorching.

The Guinness World Record for hottest temperature ever recorded is 134 degrees Fahrenheit. In Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona, it’s touched 119 degrees and just barely gone below 90 at any point over the past week, according to the National Weather Service.

It’s been so hot that regional flights in Phoenix have been canceled, because some planes cannot be operated in the excessive heat, according to the Washington Post.

And according to social media users, the heat has made some strange things happen on the ground, including melting mailboxes, actual cookies baked in a car and drivers busting out oven mitts just to grab the steering wheel.

#4  It doesn't need to be nearly that hot to disrupt air travel. I was flying White Plains to Charlotte a few years ago on a regional jet, which needed a full fuel load for the trip; temperature was about 90, and significantly hotter than predicted; they had to convince/coerce 6 people to get off so the plane would be light enough to have enough lift from the hotter air to take off.
Posted by: Glenmore || 06/26/2017 9:56 Comments || Top||

#5  There are a lot of reasons why they cant fly. But For the airlines it is usually a flight manual issue at these temps. The performance charts on most of the older regional aircraft only show operations at under 120 degrees. You cant operate the aircraft outside of the performance charts. The aircraft might be well within its capability, but if the performance charts don't go that high they cant legally fly. The asking passengers to get off the plane have more to do with trading weight for fuel, so it depends more on the leg of the flight and the temp.

The turnaround was made public on Friday when the Department of Homeland Security announced a revised list of the organizations which are getting DHS funds to help revent young Moslems from becoming jihadis. The new list replaced an Obama list announced January 13, 2017, and it dropped a $800,000 grant for an Islamic seminary in Los Angeles, and a $393,000 grant for a linked organization, the Moslem Public Affairs Council Foundation.

'Toy' bomb kills six children in South Waziristan
[DAWN] A bomb resembling a toy killed at least six children on Sunday in the tribal area bordering Afghanistan, officials said.

The bomb went kaboom! while the children were playing with it in Speenmark village in the South Wazoo tribal district.

"Six children aged between six to 12 years, all boys, were killed by a toy bomb and two others maimed critically," a local government official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Another local security official confirmed the incident and casualties. The origin of the bomb was unclear.

Dozens of children, mostly in northwest Pakistain, have bit the dust in the past when playing with "toys" that turned out to be bombs.

"Toy" bombs were airdropped in neighbouring Afghanistan by Soviet forces during the 1980s as weapons against those who opposed their invasion.

The source said that the so-called Sharia court of the Islamic State group in Hawija District sentenced seven civilians to death, on charges of cooperation with Iraqi security forces, while added that the terrorist group slaughtered the civilians, this morning, after Eid al-Fitr prayers in public.

Furthermore, Islamic State hard boyz cut the bodies of the civilians into small pieces, then put the flesh in plastic bags and threw them in the southern suburb of Hawija, the source added on condition of anonymity.

It is noteworthy that the Islamic State is still controlling Hawija District and the areas of al-Rashad, al-Abbasi, al-Zab and al-Riyad that considered the strongholds of the terrorist group, from where it launches attacks on Salahuddin Province and the outskirts of Kirkuk.

Man arrested in Melilla, accused of helping to finance Isis
[TheLocal.se] The Spanish Civil Guard tossed in the clink
You have the right to remain silent...
a Danish-Moroccan man on Friday in Spain’s African enclave of Melilla over suspicions that he helped to finance terrorist groups like Isis.

The Spanish Interior Ministry reported that the 40-year-old Danish national of Moroccan heritage had been linked to a network that recruited for groups like Isis and AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb).

The man, identified only by the initials M.E.M.,
...at least one and possibly both of those names is a variant on Mohammed....
had used a network of shell companies to hide large sums of money in order to help finance a recruitment network for terror groups, according to Sherlocks.

The Civil Guard had been looking into various residents of Melilla since 2012 who lacked basic economic training, but somehow reported holding high-ranking positions of responsibility at companies registered in Denmark.

This investigation led the agents to M.E.M., and ultimately to the discovery that the recruitment network he was helping to finance had international reach and was "probably the most active network broken up" in Spain, according to the ministry’s report. The group had sent at least ten recruits to conflict zones, including people from Germany, Denmark and Spain.

Rebel militias beat-off ISIS offensive in western Daraa countryside
[ALMASDARNEWS] Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) rebels, backed up by the Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group, have foiled a large ISIS offensive in the western countryside of Daraa Governonate. ISIS had launched their assault on the rebel-held town of Hait beginning on midnight and festivities lasted until today afternoon. In a fashion quite untypical of past festivities between ISIS and rebel militias, ISIS has suffered a heavy defeat, losing a considerable number of its attacking forces as well as failing to seize its objective (this representing both a tactical and operational defeat).

For their part, rebels managed to destroy two (2) tanks, one (1) Toyota pickup fitted with a 23 mm ZU-23-2 gun and a vehicle-borne improvised bomb (VBIED) belonging to ISIS. Furthermore, rebels also captured a BMP-1 from ISIS (in the picture above).

According to local sources, ISIS manpower losses came to a total of at least 20 fighters as a result of the failed attack whilst rebels and HTS suffered around 10 men dead and maimed.

Al Arabiya’s correspondent reported that Houthi militias started two simultaneous attacks in both border regions by firing Katyusha rockets at Saudi security posts in the village of al-Qarn in Jazan and al-Shorfa in Najran.

Saudi forces were quickly to stop the attempt by targeting the Houthi militias stationed near the front lines of the border through artillery attacks that targeted them at a distance of 25 km, while the rest of the militias who tried to breach the border where targeted with direct fire.

A coalition aircraft supported the military operation by destroying a number of mobile military vehicles carrying Houthi militias near the Saudi border.

Military sources confirmed the killing of a Houthi commander and scores of fighters, with the destruction of military vehicles and vehicles carrying militias.

province.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning as a large number of people gathered to collect petrol from the vehicle, according to rescue services.

Residents could be seen walking past blackened and twisted bodies piled by the side of the road.

Earlier, television footage showed shooting flames and a thick plume of smoke as firefighters battled to extinguish the blaze.

The charred wreckage of dozens of cycle of violences and cars could be seen scattered on the highway, along with kitchen utensils, pots, water coolers, jerrycans and buckets which victims had brought to collect the petrol.

Local sources told Al Jazeera that most of the victims were residents of nearby areas who were collecting fuel from the oil tanker, which had overturned after skidding off a national highway in Ahmedpur East.

Analysts said the reaction of the crowds is not surprising, given the problem of fuel shortages and poverty.

"If you go to these areas of Bahawalpur ... the poverty level here rises up to 65 percent at times," Sabir Shah, a journalist at GEO TV in Lahore, told Al Jazeera.

"In these conditions, with these figures, how can you expect people not to collect cooking fuel for themselves? This petrol is being used as cooking fuel by many people in nearby fields."

The Syrian army in the Quneitra area was in a state of panic Saturday. A number of Syrian rebel organizations, based in villages near the Israeli-Syrian border, launched an offensive on the City of Baath, a town controlled by the Syrian army. Palestinian cultural event in London facing ban over alleged terror links
A shot across the bow after the smaller than expected Quds Day march?
[IsraelTimes] A British politician is reportedly considering cancelling of the largest Paleostinian cultural events in Europe over the organizers’ alleged links to the terrorist groups Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", and Hezbollah.

According to a report in The Guardian, Community Secretary Sajid Javid informed "Friends of al-Aqsa" earlier this month that he was considering their two-day event in London over "concerns that your organization and those connected with it have expressed public support for a proscribed organization, namely Hamas, and that you have supported events at which Hamas and Hezbollah ‐ also proscribed ‐ have been praised."

Javid was expected to make a final decision on the matter on Friday, but his office said the politician was busy attending events in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

US-trained urban warfare units were channelling their onslaught along two perpendicular streets that converge in the heart of the Old City, aiming to isolate the jihadist bandidos Death Eaters in four pockets.

The week-old battle in the Old City is turning into the deadliest of the eight-month US-backed campaign to take back the northern city, which fell to the bandidos bandidos Death Eaters in June 2014.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
After IDF retaliates for Sunday's spillover, Syrian army warns Israel
[IsraelTimes] Regime says three Syrian soldiers killed, maintains it will hold Jewish state responsible for hostilities.

The Syrian army on Sunday issued a warning to Israel, following two IDF retaliatory strikes on its territory in as many days for spillover fire from the war-torn country.

The regime also said that three Syrian soldiers had been killed by Israeli fire.

Around 10 mortar shells from Syria struck the Golan Heights on Saturday, prompting an Israeli response that reportedly killed two Syrian soldiers. On Sunday, several more projectiles hit Israel, in what the army said was spillover fire.

The IDF on Sunday again responded to the errant fire, confirming it targeted a Syrian military vehicle. Arab media reports said five people were maimed in the Israeli raid.

"The general staff of the Syrian army warns of the dangers of these aggressive actions and holds the Israeli enemy responsible for the grave consequences of these repeated actions, despite any excuse there may be," the Ynet news site quoted the Syrian military as saying.

The Syrian general staff also published photos of at least three men it said were Syrian soldiers killed in Israeli strikes. It did not provide a date or any other information on when they were killed.

Also on Sunday, Syrian Defense Minister Fahd Jassem al-Freij visited troops in southern Syria to mark the end of the Ramadan monthlong fast where he vowed the regime would continue fighting until it conquers "every morsel of the homeland."

In Sunday’s strike, the IDF "targeted two artillery positions and an ammunitions truck belonging to the Syrian regime," an Israeli military statement read, noting the army had also ordered Israelis to keep away from open areas along the border near Quneitra, where internal fighting was heavy.

Sunday’s mortar fire was the seventh such incident in a week and came as fighting between Assad’s regime and the numerous rebel groups in southern Syria has been escalating.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned Saturday night that the regime would continue to "suffer the consequences" of any attack on Israel emanating from its territory.

Israel, he said, had "no intention of accepting challenges to our illusory sovereignty and threats to our security, even if they are caused by ’spillover’" from Syrian infighting.

"We will respond strongly, resolutely and with levelheadedness to any such case," he said. "As far as we are concerned the Assad regime is responsible for what occurs in its territory and will continue to suffer the consequences if such events recur."

Israel has tried to stay out of the six-year civil war in Syria and refrained from taking sides, but has responded to spillover fire on numerous occasions.

Turkish police disperse Gay Pride march, fire rubber bullets
[IsraelTimes] At least 22 incarcerated
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
as Istanbul LGBT activists try to press ahead with event, despite threats and ban from authorities.

Turkish police on Sunday thwarted an attempt by Gay Pride activists to hold a parade in the country’s largest city, Istanbul, in defiance of an official ban from the local authorities.

Police fired rubber bullets at a group of around 40 activists, an AFP journalist reported, a day after the city governor’s office banned the march, citing safety and public order concerns.

Small groups gathered at Taksim Square, but witnesses said a heavy police presence outnumbered the activists, and at least 22 people were detained.

It is the third year in a row that the march has been banned, and organizers denounced the move.

"We are not scared, we are here, we will not change," the Pride Committee said in a statement on Sunday. "You are scared, you will change and you will get used to it.

"We are here again to show that we will fight in a determined fashion for our pride."

'Governors change, we stay’
In one of the biggest LGBT events in the mainly Moslem region, the 2014 Gay Pride parade in Istanbul drew tens of thousands of people.

Last year, with the city on the edge after bombings blamed on the Islamic State

group and Kurdish murderous Moslems, organizers were denied permission to march.

Riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters who defied the ban.

Eleven activists went on trial in Istanbul this week for defying last year’s ban on the Gay Pride march, but they were all acquitted.

This year, the parade coincided with the first day of Eid, the festival marking the end of the holy Moslem fasting month of Ramadan.

City authorities banned the parade after threats from far-right and conservative groups.

of having overseen a creeping Islamization since he came to power, first as prime minister in 2003, and then president in 2014.

“We are not alone, we are not wrong, we have not given up,” the Pride Committee’s statement said Sunday.

“Governors, governments, states change and we stay. Threats, bans, pressures will not deter us…We will not give up on,” it added.
Update from Ynet at 3:40 p.m. EDT:

Anadolu Agency said 20 people who "reacted against" the march were among those detained Sunday. Ultranationalist and religious groups had threatened the 15th Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride March in the week leading up to it.

Organizers said 25 people who tried to go on with the banned event were also detained, including two minors and a Danish activist. They were released after questioning.

Syria-returned militants may be behind attack on policemen: CTD
Returning to Pakistan??
[DAWN] Investigators probing Friday’s assassination on four coppers in the SITE area on Saturday suspected that the snuffies who returned from Syria were involved in the deadly attack on the law enforcers.

Four coppers were bumped off when armed pillion riders opened indiscriminate fire when they were sitting at a roadside eatery to break their fast.

The Counter-Terrorism Department of the Sindh police had launched a probe into the assassination'>assassination after a case was registered against unknown men under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1997 at the CTD cop shoppe, Garden.

The police Sherlocks had collected around 28 spent bullet casings fired from two 9mm pistols from the scene of the crime. The empties were sent for a forensic analysis to ascertain whether the same weapon was used in any previous killings.

"The forensic report revealed that one of the 9mm pistols was also used in assassination'>assassinations of two coppers within the remit of the New Town cop shoppe on May 20," DIG CTD Amir Farooqi told Dawn.

He said that a spokesperson of a previously unknown Lion of Islam outfit, Jamaat-ul-Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
Pakistain, had grabbed credit for the killing of the four coppers as the assailant had thrown a pamphlet there. The same outfit had also claimed the responsibility of the assassination'>assassination of a retired army colonel, Tahir Zia Nagi, in Baloch Colony area in April.

He said that this newly established Lion of Islam outfit had declared that they would target law enforcers.

The DIG said as per the CTD’s initial assessment this newly created group appeared to be inspired by the banned Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

"It [the outfit] has evolved recently and the CTD apprehended that it was formed by some snuffies who had earlier gone to fight in Syria and [had] now returned," said DIG Farooqi.

China, US to work for ‘complete’ Korean denuclearisation
[DAWN] China and the United States agreed that efforts to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula should be "complete, verifiable and irreversible", Chinese state media said on Saturday, reporting the results of high level talks in Washington this week.

"Both sides reaffirm that they will strive for the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula," a consensus document released by the official Xinhua news agency said.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had said on Thursday that the United States pressed China to ramp up economic and political pressure on North Korea, during his meeting with top Chinese diplomats and defence chiefs.

China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi and General Fang Fenghui met Tillerson and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis during the talks. Yang later met with U.S. President Donald Trump

in the White House, where they also discussed North Korea, Xinhua reported.

The consensus document also highlighted the need to fully and strictly hold to UN Security Council resolutions and push for dialogue and negotiation, which has long been China’s position on the issue.

Sketchy firm behind Trump dossier is stalling investigators
[NY Post] A secretive Washington firm that commissioned the dubious intelligence dossier on Donald Trump is stonewalling congressional investigators trying to learn more about its connections to the Democratic Party.

The Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month threatened to subpoena the firm, Fusion GPS, after it refused to answer questions and provide records to the panel identifying who financed the error-ridden dossier, which was circulated during the election and has sparked much of the Russia scandal now engulfing the White House.

What is the company hiding? Fusion GPS describes itself as a "research and strategic intelligence firm" founded by "three former Wall Street Journal investigative reporters." But congressional sources say it’s actually an opposition-research group for Democrats, and the founders, who are more political activists than journalists, have a pro-Hillary, anti-Trump agenda.

"These weren’t mercenaries or hired guns," a congressional source familiar with the dossier probe said. "These guys had a vested personal and ideological interest in smearing Trump and boosting Hillary’s chances of winning the White House."

Fusion GPS was on the payroll of an unidentified Democratic ally of Clinton when it hired a long-retired British spy to dig up dirt on Trump. In 2012, Democrats hired Fusion GPS to uncover dirt on GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. And in 2015, Democrat ally Planned Parenthood retained Fusion GPS to investigate pro-life activists protesting the abortion group.

More, federal records show a key co-founder and partner in the firm was a Hillary Clinton donor and supporter of her presidential campaign.

It seems that Fusion GPS was hired by Pubs to collect oppositional research against Trump during the primaries. The effort was dropped by the Pubs after Trump won the nomination. It was then continued by the Dems after Trump became the nominee. The Swamp is indeed deep and also wide.

Jihadist rebels launch fresh assault after Israeli warplanes target Syrian Army in Golan Heights
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham launched a fresh assault this afternoon in the Golan Heights region, following another Arclight airstrike by the Israeli Air Force.

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and their allies reportedly began their assault after an Israeli warplane struck the Syrian Arab Army’s positions near the Old Government building.

The Israeli attack would pave the way for the forces of Evil to strike several points around al-Ba’ath City, including the Bemo Bank and Fire Station.

According to a military source, no gains have been made by the jihadist rebels; however, intense festivities are still ongoing near the al-Samdaniyah al-Gharbiyah axis.

Today’s attack by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham comes just hours after the Syrian Arab Army reversed the jihadist gains around al-Ba’ath City in the Golan Heights

Arabia
Qatari Ruling Family Importing Hezbollah Fighters for Protection
[BREITBART] Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the ruler of Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates...
, has started enlisting the help of Hezbollah fighters from Leb to secure his family and his rule, according to a report in Youm7 ("Seventh Day"), an Egyptian newspaper aligned with President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi.

The newspaper cited Qatari opposition sources who claimed that the reason Qatar recently decided to allow the entrance of Lebanese citizens without an entry visa was to legitimize the entry of Hezbollah fighters into the prince’s service, bypassing international restrictions imposed on the terrorist militia.

The newspaper reported that Hezbollah’s fighters are to join Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Turkish forces that are already present in the Qatari capital, Doha.

A member of the Egyptian parliament’s human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
committee, Yusri Asyouti, said that the step indicates "that Tamim has lost his head and started to feel the danger hovering over him and so began to import guards to secure the ruling family in light of the growing opposition to Qatar."

Hisham Najar, a researcher of Islamic movements, also referred to the import of Hezbollah fighters to Qatar. He told the newspaper, "Qatar is playing with fire. It’s acting as an organization and not as a state."

Concerning Qatar’s relations with Hezbollah and other myrmidon organizations in Leb, a Saudi news site reported that during 2007, the Qatari charity Id Alt’ani supported and funded the jihadist organization Fatah al-Islam
A Syrian-incubated al-Qaeda work-alike that they think can be turned off if no longer needed to keep the Lebanon pot stirred.
, a Salafist group that fought in the Paleostinian refugee camp Nahr Albared. The site also noted that documents showed the charity supported Hezbollah institutions as they led the construction of terrorist infrastructure in southern Leb after the last war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006.

The site said that the Qataris insisted on funneling their aide through Hezbollah and its institutions and not through the Lebanese state as Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...

3 made to leave Chicago LGBT march over ‘triggering’ Star of David flags
Linda Sarsour, one of the organizers of the anti-Trump "pussy march", made it clear in the days following the inauguration that those who are pro-choice or pro-Israel cannot be members of the Progressive left because intersectionality.
[IsraelTimes] Organizers of ’anti-Zionist’ event say rainbow banners held by Jewish participants ’made people feel unsafe’.

A parade in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
... home of Al Capone, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel,...
celebrating the lesbian community banned three Jewish women carrying Jewish Pride flags.

Organizers of the 21st annual Chicago Dyke March told the women that the rainbow flags with a white Star of David in the center would be a trigger to people who found it offensive.

A Dyke March collective member told the Windy City Times that the women were told to leave because the flags "made people feel unsafe," and that the march was "anti-Zionist" and "pro-Paleostinian."

More than 1,500 LGBTQ individuals and their supporters participated in Saturday’s march. The march was protested at one point by Christian bad boys, according to the Windy City Times.

One of the Jewish marchers, Laurel Grauer, Midwest manager of A Wider Bridge, a group that forges ties between LGBT Jews in Israel and North America, told the publication that she has carried her Jewish Pride flag in the same parade for more than a decade, and said that it "celebrates my queer, Jewish identity." She also said she lost count of the number of people who harassed her over the flag on Saturday.

"People asked me if I was a Zionist and I said ’yes, I do care about the state of Israel but I also believe in a two-state solution and an independent Paleostine,’" Grauer said. "It’s hard to swallow the idea of inclusion when you are excluding people from that. People are saying ’You can be gay, but not in this way.’ We do not feel welcomed. We do not feel included."
That is because you were summarily expelled, my dear. This is not about feelings, but about that single fact.
Update from Ynet at 3:45:
National Director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League Jonathan Greenblatt called on reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown LGBTQ March organizers to apologize after Jewish participants were ejected from the march for carrying rainbow flags emblazoned with the Jewish Star of David.
A quixotic demand. After all, they still won't get to march with the others.
"It is outrageous that while celebrating LGBTQ pride, Jewish participants carrying a rainbow Star of David flag were asked to leave the Chicago Dyke March. The community of LGBTQ supporters is diverse and that is part of its tremendous strength," said Greenblatt. "Both the act and the explanation were anti-Semitic, plain and simple.
Yes. Intentionally so.
"We stand with A Wider Bridge and others in demanding an apology. We appreciate the Human Rights Campaign’s support and we call on other leaders from LGBTQ and progressive communities to join us in condemning this exclusion."
Perhaps by underlining this other Jewish progressives will start to notice how entirely unwanted they are by those who otherwise share the same objectives.

Iran blames high US output for falling oil prices
[Iran Press TV] Iran has blamed a recent rise in US oil production for the plunge in global prices of crude oil.
Yep, we dunnit. And we're going to continue doing it, too.
Iran’s Petroleum Minister Bijan Zanganeh told news hounds on Wednesday that the US had increased its oil production by 900,000 barrels per day. This, he said, was way beyond what the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) had estimated.

Zanganeh said he was already discussing the role of high US oil production in the decline of prices. However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
he said it would be difficult to prepare the member states for any collective action on such issues.

The Iranian minister further spoke highly of OPEC’s performance in arriving at a consensus to cut output and help prop up prices.

He said the output cut plan was just to show its effects, adding that it was still too soon to judge its effectiveness.

OPEC in a meeting in May agreed to extend until March 2018 an oil output cut deal that was sealed last year to help shore up prices.

The cuts would lower the collective production of producers by 1.8 million barrels per day (mb/d).

A dozen non-members led by top oil producer Russia, which reduced output in tandem with OPEC, would also join the scheme.

OPEC members Nigeria and Libya would still be excluded from cuts as their output remained curbed by unrest.

India-Pakistan
One killed as Hindus attack Muslims in India

one Hindu for suspected involvement in the killing of a Moslem man who was attacked with a knife on a running train near the Indian capital.

The arrested man told news hounds late Saturday that he was drunk when he attacked four men on the train Friday after he was told by his friends that they were "beef-eaters." Eating beef is taboo for many Hindus.

Police said another three Moslems were maimed in the attack by about 20 Hindus.

The Moslems were travelling back to their village in Haryana after shopping in New Delhi ahead of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Police officer Kamal Deep Goyal said an altercation over seat space between the two groups triggered the attack.

"They started fighting over seats in the compartment. Then there are also allegations that some words which hurt religious sentiments were said after which things got out of hand," said Goyal.

Attacks on minority Moslems by Hindu fringe groups have been on the rise, apparently emboldened since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist government came to power in 2014.

Ramadan deaths from terrorism nearly quadruples from last year
[Breitbart] Islamic extremists killed more than 1,620 people during this year’s holiest month for Muslims, marking one of the deadliest Ramadans in modern history, reveals a Breitbart News tally.

The large majority of Ramadan violence victims are Muslims.

At the end of Ramadan on Saturday, the total number of casualties across the world for the entire holy month had reached 3,451 (1,627 murders and 1,824 injuries), more than tripling the 1,150 (421 deaths and 729 injuries) that took place in 2016, considered the deadliest holy month in recent memory.

The 1,627 fatalities this year nearly quadrupled the estimated 421 deaths last year. There were an estimated 160 terror incidents in nearly thirty predominantly Muslim countries during Ramadan 2017.
Breitbart article is dated June 7 but contains data thru June 24. It also lists the various attacks. Since ISIS contributed about 40% of the total, I labeled it that way

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Number of drug addicts in Iran doubles in six years on bumper crop in Afghanistan
[IsraelTimes] Opium still ranks as most heavily consumed narcotic in Islamic Theocratic Republic due to proximity to poppy powerhouse Afghanistan.

The number of drug addicts in Iran has more than doubled in six years, with opium the country’s most popular narcotic, local media reported Sunday.

"There are about 2.8 million people regularly consuming drugs" in the country of 80 million people, Drug Control Organization front man Parviz Afshar told the ISNA news agency.

Citing experts from the health ministry, Iran’s Welfare Organization and his own agency, Afshar said the number of drug users was up from 1.3 million six years ago.

He said opium made up 67 percent of consumption, with marijuana and its derivatives accounting for 12 percent and methamphetamine around 8 percent of the total.

"Opium is still the most popular (drug) and methamphetamine use has dropped significantly," he said.

Iran’s neighbor Afghanistan produces some 90 percent of the world’s opium, which is extracted from poppy resin and refined to make heroin.

Iran is a major transit point for Afghan-produced opiates heading to Europe and beyond.

Opium production surged significantly after the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 and overthrew the ruling Taliban
...Arabic for students...
By its last year in power, the Taliban had slashed opium output to just 185 tons a year, according to United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
estimates.

But the UN says Afghan production has since rocketed, hitting between 4,800 and 6,000 tons in 2016.

Last year’s bumper crop, aided by better weather, pushed world opium output up by a third on the previous year and helped fund an intensifying Taliban insurgency.

That is despite a decade of international efforts to stabilize the country and billions of dollars spent on persuading Afghan farmers to grow other crops.

The UN’s crime and drugs agency said Thursday that the global narcotics market is "thriving" with opiates causing tens of thousands of avoidable deaths a year.

#1  In a population of approx. 70 million it used to be one in every sixteen iranians was buying and using cheap narcotics. Grown in Afghanistan and refined in pakistan and smuggled into the two southern border provinces of Iran. You mean to say that the figure has improved ( is that the right term ?) to one in eight Iranians?
You could get dope for the price of a pint of milk ten years ago.

And the whores were a problem using the graveyard out side the Moslem seminary. ( flat tomb lid stones were as good as beds although a bit hard on the back ) But that was only in the town of Qom. I don't know how serious the other towns were. Just the seminary towns was all I heard. Between prostitution and dope Islamic Values are a caution.

Great White North
"Extremist" Groups Come Out of Shadows
[AnNahar] Tattooed and wearing a black t-shirt emblazoned with a wolf paw, Patrick Beaudry admits being in the second year of a political movement "that is perhaps more radical" than others.

La Meute, a far-right group in Quebec of which he is a founder, does not promote bully boy or racist views, he insists, while confessing a liking for the French National Front of Marine Le Pen.

His motivation, however, is unequivocal.

"Our fight is with radical Islam," Beaudry told AFP.

La Meute is not a lone actor in Quebec. Other groups seeking independence or opposing immigration include Soldiers of Oden and the Federation of Native Quebecers (FQS).

They are all close or affiliated to the far-right. Engaged by issues such as secularism or the veiling of Moslem women, they are no longer shy to speak out to try and influence political debate.

"What I hear from the National Front charms me," says Beaudry, who also agrees with the position of the FQS, which welcomed Le Pen's recent visit to Quebec, which proved fertile ground.

About 20 percent of expatriates in the province voted for Le Pen in French presidential elections in April -- twice the rate of support of French citizens residing throughout Canada.

Membership of groups such as La Meute -- some of which are interlaced and affiliated with international organizations -- range from a few dozen to thousands. Most are held together by the charisma of their leader.

"A group can disappear overnight because of an internal schism or a decision by its members to self-dissolve or go underground," said Aurelie Campana, a far-right specialist in Canada.

But the movements are undoubtedly coming out of the woodwork.

- Refugee tensions -
"Until very recently, these extreme right-wing groups refused to be part of political debates and public discourse," said the professor at Laval University in Quebec City.

"Many associate the extreme right with racism and, to say racist is to be stigmatized. These groups want to seen as legitimate," Campana added.

Tensions, however, have run high.

Last fall, 50 far right sympathizers protested outside the Quebec legislature waving placards that read: "Death to Terrorists, Islam out."

And in March, nearly 200 demonstrated against a motion in Canada's parliament condemning Islamaphobia. The motion was adopted after a shooting rampage at a mosque in Quebec City killed six worshippers.

The far right quickly distanced itself from the action of the young attacker seemingly inspired by their rhetoric who is now in jug awaiting prosecution.

A refugee group also noted that shooter Alexandre Bissonnette espoused in online posts positions taken by US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, Le Pen and a Quebec group that rejects multiculturalism.

But, like their brethren in Europe, the far-right groups in Canada have taken a firm stand against immigration, seizing on problems arising from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's welcoming of 40,000 Syrian refugees.

"Extreme right-wing groups in Quebec have a number of objectives," said Maxime Fiset, a former FQS member.

They are "anti-immigrant, ultra-nationalist or neo-fascist," and see secularism as a means to combat radical Islam, he said.

La Meute and its contemporaries hope to make a breakthrough in next year's elections in the French-speaking province where liberals now rule.

Horizon Quebec Actuel, another party affiliated with La Belle France's National Front, contested a by-election in late May in Montreal.

Its campaign posters featured the split image of a young woman wearing a blue bonnet on one side and a black veil (niqab) on the other.

"We ask immigrants colonists to adopt the customs of the people of Quebec, it has nothing to do with racism," said its leader Alexandre Cormier-Denis.
