Bloomberg Gun Group Apologizes for Honoring Bombing Suspect
Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was run over by his brother after a gunfight with police, was named as a victim of gun violence during an event held by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the anti-gun violence group run by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Tsarnaev’s name was listed during one of the gun group’s “No More Names” bus events in Concord, N.H., where it read the names of the people who have been killed in connection with gun violence, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported Tuesday.

“Some of the loudest shouts came when a reader spoke the name of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects who was killed by police during a gunfight,” the Union Leader reported Tuesday.

Several protestors shouted, “He’s a terrorist,” according to the Union Leader.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns used a list compiled by Slate.com, titled “How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?” Bloomberg’s gun group called the inclusion of Tsarnaev in its list of gun violence victims a mistake and apologized for the error.

#2  So how many others were 'accidentally' included when they control c control p latte sip?

Either they obviously do not care about the names on the list, just reading with the passion of narrating the phone book, padding the stats with murderers killed in the act of murdering, or they left him there on purpose. Which is it?

20 killed after militants storm UN compound in Somalia
Seven al-Qaida-linked militants on a suicide mission attacked the U.N. compound Wednesday with a truck bomb and then poured inside, killing at least 13 people before dying in the assault.

At least three foreigners were slain during the raid in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, where the United Nations expanded its presence this year, about 18 months after Islamic insurgents were pushed from the seaside city.

The militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, calling the U.N. "a merchant of death."

African Union forces expelled al-Shabab from Mogadishu in August 2011, ending years of daily violence that had caused the rest of the world to shun the capital for two decades. After the ouster of al-Shabab, the international community had started trickling back into the capital, and the U.N. began moving in its personnel from Kenya, a process that accelerated in recent weeks.

Wednesday's attack, however, underscores the fragile security situation and will force the U.N. and embassies to review safety plans and decide if they have the resources to withstand a sustained assault from al-Shabab.

Pentagon Shoots Down Kerry's Syria Airstrike Plan
Jahwn Kerry: second smartest man in a room when it's him and a chair. Perhaps next time he'll ask his lucky hat...
Twenty years ago, in a debate over the war in Bosnia, Madeleine Albright, then the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, issued a challenge to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell. Albright wanted the U.S. to confront an aggressive Serbia; Powell and the Pentagon were hesitant. Albright grew frustrated: "What's the point of having this superb military that you're always talking about if we can't use it?" Albright asked. Powell later said that he thought Albright was going to give him an aneurysm.

Flash-forward to this past Wednesday. At a principals meeting in the White House situation room, Secretary of State John Kerry began arguing, vociferously, for immediate U.S. airstrikes against airfields under the control of Bashar al-Assad's Syrian regime -- specifically, those fields it has used to launch chemical weapons raids against rebel forces.

It was at this point that the current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the usually mild-mannered Army General Martin Dempsey, spoke up, loudly. According to several sources, Dempsey threw a series of brushback pitches at Kerry, demanding to know just exactly what the post-strike plan would be and pointing out that the State Department didn't fully grasp the complexity of such an operation.

Dempsey informed Kerry that the Air Force could not simply drop a few bombs, or fire a few missiles, at targets inside Syria: To be safe, the U.S. would have to neutralize Syria's integrated air-defense system, an operation that would require 700 or more sorties. At a time when the U.S. military is exhausted, and when sequestration is ripping into the Pentagon budget, Dempsey is said to have argued that a demand by the State Department for precipitous military action in a murky civil war wasn't welcome.

#4  Based on open source information, there were no known MANPADS with the capabilty to reach TWA 800 at the 15-16,000 it was reported to be at when it exploded. Additionally MANPADS are heat seekers so they would likely have impacted in one of the engines and they do not have warheads large enough to cause the plane to explode in the manner it did.

#5  Wrong

NTSB says initiating event was 13,800 altitude and the Stinger, fielded in 1974 has this performance data according to the FAS:
The Stinger is similar in capabilities to the Russian Igla series. More recent versions are equipped with a cooled two-color, infrared-ultraviolet detector that discriminates between flares and the target. Stingers are able to effectively engage targets head-on, from behind and from the side. The missile's maximum range is 4800 meters......
Posted by: NoMoreBS || 06/19/2013 18:56 Comments || Top||

#6  Maximum range does not equal maximum altitude. Per http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/stinger.htm the maximum altitude of a Stinger is 10,000 feet
(and I made the above post about MANPADS, forgot to use my screenname)
Posted by: Chantry || 06/19/2013 19:08 Comments || Top||

#7  Consider that it is unlikely the seeker could acquire such a "cool" target and the fact that at that altitude the rocket motor propellant would be exhausted, with the missile gliding, the probability of a successful intercept is small......very, very small. I officially throw the bullshit flag based on this alone.
Posted by: Tzsenator || 06/19/2013 21:31 Comments || Top||

#8  Completely impossible for a stinger or any other MANPAD to do that. There are radar homing military missiles that could easily do that.

So it could have been a missile, if the Vincennes was patrolling New York sound. But it wasn't. So forgetaboutit.

#9  Reminds me of old dreams/visions I had back in the day, which I believe to be directly related to the later TWA 800 event, I.E. ABOUT A MAN IN A ROWBOAT ON THE OCEAN AS A SOMETHING SHOOTS UP INTO THE SKY. The latter reminded me more of a SMALL SURFACE-TO-AIR MISSLE [SAM] THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

The adventures of a Libyan weapons dealer in Syria
BENGHAZI, Libya – Abdul Basit Haroun says he is behind some of the biggest shipments of weapons from Libya to Syria, which he delivers on chartered flights to neighbouring countries and then smuggles over the border.

After fleeing Libya in his 20s, Haroun established himself as a property developer in Manchester. After about two decades in the British city, he returned to Libya in 2011 to fight in the revolution, where he became a prominent rebel commander. He says he sends aid and weapons to help Syrians achieve the freedom he fought for during the Libyan revolution.

The first consignment of weapons was smuggled into Syria aboard a Libyan ship delivering aid last year, Haroun says, but now containers of arms are flown “above board” into neighbouring countries on chartered flights.

In the months since Haroun began his work, arming the rebels has moved up the international agenda, with Saudi Arabia equipping them with missiles, and Washington also planning to send weapons to the men fighting President Bashar al-Assad.

Haroun spoke to Reuters over coffee and homemade cake late at night at his villa on the outskirts of Benghazi, the eastern city that began the uprising that deposed Muammar Gaddafi. His son, a young man who spoke English with a Manchester accent, offered help with weapon prices and other details.
Did Sonny grow up in the Isles or did he just go to finishing school there?
Haroun was upset the West had not intervened in Syria, as it did in Libya and said the opportunity to avert a larger war had been missed.
Because no one knows how to avoid a larger war better than an arms dealer...
“Even when the war in Syria ends, there will be another war in region; Sunni against Shia. At the beginning, there was just Assad to bring down … now Hezbollah, Iran are involved.”

A Reuters reporter was taken to an undisclosed location in Benghazi to see a container of weapons being prepared for delivery to Syria. It was stacked with boxes of ammunition, rocket launchers and various types of light and medium weapons. Haroun and an associate said it was being stored on the unnamed base to keep the arms safe.

“They are not partners with me in the transfer of weapons, but I store the weapons here because it is a safe place,” said Haroun’s associate, who asked not to be named because it could negatively impact his relief work.
Because the Widows Ammunition Fund doesn't ordinarily seek this kind of publicity...
Haroun says he can collect weapons from around the country and arrange for them to be delivered to the Syrian rebels because of his contacts in Libya and abroad.

“They know we are sending guns to Syria,” Haroun said. “Everyone knows.”

In Libya, he helps the government with state security, according to interior ministry spokesman Majdi al-Ourfi.

He also has credentials as a commander from the days of the revolution. “Abdel Basit Haroun was with us in the February 17 brigade before he quit to form his own brigade,” said fellow brigade commander Ismail Salabi.

His weapon dealing activities appear to be well known, at least in LibyaÂ’s east. Senior officials in LibyaÂ’s army and government told Reuters they backed supplying weapons to the Syrian opposition, while a member of LibyaÂ’s congress said Haroun was doing a great job of helping the Syrian rebels.
And, of course, they have a quiet piece of the action. Count on it...
“After the end of the war of liberation, he became involved in supporting the Syrian revolution… sending aid and weapons to the Syrian people,” said assembly member Tawfiq Al-Shehabi. “He does a good job of supporting the Syrian revolution.”

Another official, who declined to be identified, said he had allowed weapons to leave the port of Benghazi for Syria.

“We don’t stop them because we know what the Syrian people are going through,” he said, referring to weapons being smuggled out of the eastern port. He did not say who was behind the shipments he allowed through.

A Libyan army commander, Hamed Belkhair, said that he was aware of colleagues in the military who had met Syrian rebels and agreed to help them by supplying arms.

“The weapons are not supplied to extremists, but only to the Free Syrian Army,” said Belkhair.
And none of them are extreme...
A United Nations Panel report dated February this year also backs HarounÂ’s assertions that weapons smuggling to Syria from Libya is widely known about.

“The Syrian Arab Republic has presented a prominent destination for some Libyan fighters and Libyan military materiel,” the writers say.

Transfers have been organised under the supervision, or with the consent, of a range of actors in Libya and the Syrian Arab Republic.”

The report adds: “the significant size of some shipments and the logistics involved suggest that representatives of the Libyan local authorities might have at least been aware of the transfers, if not actually directly involved.”

Haroun runs the operation with a business partner an associate, who helps him coordinate about a dozen people in Libyan cities collecting weapons for Syria. Both said several flights had been chartered to Jordan or Turkey to deliver weapons that were then transferred over the border. HarounÂ’s associate, who also runs a branch of the Widows Ammunition Fund relief organisation, said that about 28 tonnes of weapons had been delivered by air so far.

“We are doing two great things,” Haroun said. “The first is that we are taking guns off the street. The mission is so popular that we get 50 percent discounts on weapons.”

Haroun added that some were also donated free, particularly heavy items that families had little use for after the war.
It's hard to use an RPG in ordinarily criminal activity; it's rather noticeable. Better to sell the sucker to Haroun and use the proceeds to pick up some extra 7.62 ammo. After all, you can never have too much ammo...
His son helped him with weapon prices on the streets. For example, a C5 general purpose machine gun was about $25, while rocket propelled grenade launchers were nearer $120.

“If we had the money we could collect all the guns from the streets, but it currently takes about 4-5 months to get enough for a delivery,” Haroun said, adding that funding came from local businesses and Syrians abroad.

They deliver the weapons to the Free Syrian Army because they are best placed to know which rebel group is most in need of supplies, Haroun said. The FSA delivered the arms to the front line and Haroun said he no control over which groups received the weapons.
al-Nousra thanks him...
They preferred to send weapons rather than fighters, because of the risk of trouble returning to Libyan soil.
And the small risk of the hard boys getting whacked...
Both he and his associate travelled with their first successful delivery in August over the Syrian border to ensure it reached its destination. They were appalled by the horrors witnessed there.

“Anyone who saw what I did in Syria would do the same thing,” said the associate. “The water is so polluted you wouldn’t even wash your hands with it. People have no clothes. I saw three births with no doctors present. People are dying without medication.”

A Reuters reporter who visited locations supplied by Haroun in Syria a month or two after the shipment was said to have arrived said the area was awash in weapons of Libyan origin. That aid shipment met only a fraction of the peopleÂ’s needs, the associate said. The next consignment due to sail in June would be bigger, at close to 2,000 tonnes.

“The next shipment will be only aid. And if we were planning on taking weapons, we wouldn’t tell you,” he added.

He did, however, produce iPad footage that he said showed an earlier consignment being prepared. In the clip, a group of men were loading rockets and boxes of ammunition out of a small truck and into a container. HarounÂ’s associate gestured at the person filming to turn the phone off, while a man on the truck grinned at the camera.

Air deliveries are preferred because of the risks of interception in east Mediterranean waters; their first shipment was seized off the coast of Lebanon.

Both Haroun and his associate said the second shipment was successful because it took a longer route, reaching Turkey in August 2012 with weapons hidden among about 460 tonnes of aid destined for Syrian refugees.

The UN report appears to confirm at least some of Haroun’s account, in its investigation in the case of a second vessel, the Al Entisar. The Panel investigated a news report that a Libyan ship with around 400 tonnes of aid had supplied Syrian rebels with “the largest consignment of weapons … since the uprising”.

The Panel found that the loading port was Benghazi, that the exporter was “a relief organization based in Benghazi” and the consignee was the same Islamic foundation based in Turkey that Haroun said had helped with documentation.
A "relief organization" in Benghazi is shipping "humanitarian aid" from one hellhole to another, and no one questioned it. Rather tells you all you need to know, doesn't it?
“The Panel also spoke to the head of the Benghazi-based relief organization, who organised the shipment. He confirmed that the cargo had been loaded on to Al Entisar… denying that any weapons had been on board,” the report says.

HarounÂ’s associate says he told authorities only aid was on board and denies anyone knew about the weapons. Haroun contradicts him on this point.

#1  Haroun was upset the West had not intervened in Syria, as it did in Libya and said the opportunity to avert a larger war had been missed.

Actually he's right. The optimum time was 18 months ago, when the rebellion was starting off, the first wave of army deserters was happening, and, importantly, the 'right' actors could be identified and cultivated. Somebody like Haroun would have been perfect as a supply source.

“We are doing two great things,” Haroun said. “The first is that we are taking guns off the street. The mission is so popular that we get 50 percent discounts on weapons.”

Mebbe he should talk to Mayor Rahm "Twinkletoes" Emmanuel.

#2  AlanC, I think this is the appropriate answer to your response the other day.

Yes, this is like asking a car dealer if I need a new car, but have to agree that there is another round after this one. I find it interesting, if however true, how forthcoming Haroun is, as if he has no fear of prosecution or being shut down, or for that matter competition from the, uhem, newcomers KSA and USA.

Don't suppose the hit on Ambassador Stevens was an Iranian op? Sure doesn't seem like any big secret about what goes on in Benghazi.

Navy Will Inspect Its Bathrooms for 'Degrading' Images of Women
[CNSNEWS] In line with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel's order for troops to have their workplaces searched for "degrading or offensive" materials -- part of an attempt to curb sexual assault in the military -- the Navy will inspect even its bathrooms.

While what's degrading or offensive is open to interpretation, the material can include song lyrics and "inappropriate cartoons."

In a memo sent on June 13, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus ordered that all sailors, Marines, cadets and civilian employees have their workplaces searched by June 28.

The "comprehensive visual inspections" of the workspaces conducted by commanding officers will "ensure they are free from materials that create a degrading, hostile, or offensive work environment."

Such items are "contraband," the memo says.

According to the order, "Workplaces include but are not limited to: Office buildings, facilities, naval vessels, aircraft, government vehicles, hangars, ready rooms, conference rooms, individual offices, cubicles, storage rooms, tool and equipment rooms, workshops, break rooms, galleys, recreation areas, Navy and Marine Corps Exchanges, and heads."

It's the same idea here at the hospital -- people have to work together, so don't do schtupid stuff to offend them.

Since it's the military, of course, the order has to be spelled out in great detail. Since we're dealing with politicians, we can't rely on common sense.

Gen. Helms and the Senator's 'Hold'
h/t Istapundit
Lt. Gen. Susan Helms is a pioneering woman who finds her career stalled because of a war on men—a political campaign against sexual assault in the military that shows signs of becoming an effort to criminalize male sexuality.

Gen. Helms is a 1980 graduate of the Air Force Academy who became an astronaut in 1990. She was a crewman on four space-shuttle missions and a passenger on two, traveling to the International Space Station and back 5½ months later. Two days after arriving at the station in 2001, she, along with fellow astronaut Jim Voss, conducted history's longest spacewalk—8 hours, 56 minutes—to work on a docking device.

In March, President Obama nominated Gen. Helms to serve as vice commander of the Air Force Space Command. But Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat who sits on the Armed Services Committee, has placed a "permanent hold" on the nomination.

in one corruption case, judicial sources told Agence La Belle France Presse, but the ousted president will remain in jug on other charges.

The North Cairo misdemeanor court ordered Mubarak's release but said it will continue to investigate accusations that he and his family acquired wealth illegally, the sources said.

Investigators from the Illicit Gains Authority have been questioning Mubarak at the south Cairo prison where he is being held to look into how he acquired several houses and villas around Egypt.

According to sources close to the case, Mubarak insisted that all the property was acquired legitimately.

Last week, Mubarak, his wife and one of their sons Gamal said they would return gifts worth a total of $600,000 to Egypt's former information minister Anas al-Fekki, according to the official MENA news agency.

The report added that the Jordanian man "bought 100 Kalashnikov and ammunition from Ein el-Hellhole Paleostinian Refugee camp (near the port city of Sidon) at the cost of $40,000."

Afghanistan
NATO hands over security to Afghans
Afghan forces took control of security across the country on Tuesday, marking a major milestone as US-led combat troops prepare to withdraw after 12 years of fighting the Taleban. Speaking at a military academy outside Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said the police and army were ready to take on insurgents, but a bomb in the city underlined persistent instability.

“Our security and defence forces will now be in the lead,” Karzai told Afghan and NATO officials at the event, the timing and location of which had been kept secret due to fears of a militant attack.

“From here, all security responsibility and all security leadership will be taken by our brave forces,” he said. “When people see security has been transferred to Afghans, they support the army and police more than before.”

Doubts remain over the ability of Afghan forces to thwart the Taliban, and the NATO military coalition will retain an important function in logistics and air support as well as in combat emergencies.
Check the pic at the link. They look like a scruffy bunch. They don't even wear the same helmets when on parade. Perhaps they can fight, perhaps they're loyal, perhaps .. oh hell I think they're screwed...
But NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that by taking the lead in security on Tuesday, Afghan forces were completing a five-stage transition process that began in March 2011.

“They are doing so with remarkable resolve,” he said. “Ten years ago, there were no Afghan national security forces... now you have 350,000 Afghan troops and police, a formidable force,” he said.
'Formidable' does not mean what you think it means...
“We will continue to help Afghan troops in operations if needed, but we will no longer plan, execute or lead those operations, and by the end of 2014 our combat mission will be completed.”

The handover of the last 95 districts from NATO to Afghan control includes areas in the south and east where the Taliban have concentrated their bloody insurgency since 2001. As Afghan soldiers and police take over the fight against the militants, who were ousted from power after the 9/11 attacks, the 100,000 NATO troops will focus on training and mentoring roles.
And protecting themselves from green-on-blue attacks...
Doubts over the Afghan forcesÂ’ capacity have been fuelled by high rates of desertion and fears for the future of foreign aid post-2014.

On Friday, the US commander of the NATO mission in Afghanistan warned that gains secured over the last 12 years would be lost if donor nations cut back support after the foreign withdrawal.

“We are not where we need to be yet,” US General Joseph Dunford told foreign journalists. “The continued presence of the international community politically, in development and in security is necessary to sustain the progress that we have made.”

#1  I am not sure it is a good idea to handle a relatively high-maintenance weapon like the M16 to a force whose is not even able to handle same helmets to its soldiers while on parade. Thre is a goos reason guerrillas and forces whose men cannot be relied on maintenance work rely on inaccurate but rugged AK47s instead of M16s.

After an Easy Hearing, the NSA and FBI are Ready for a Drink
If you were wondering how the NSA and FBI felt about the very friendly hearing the House Intelligence Committee invited them to today, a hot mic has your answer. "Tell your boss," NSA Director Keith Alexander told the FBI deputy director, "I owe him another friggin' beer."
Top signals sleuth overlooks hot mic ???
Ben Doernberg caught the exchange, which we've clipped below. Alexander, being photographed at bottom center, is speaking with FBI deputy director Sean Joyce, to his left.

Throughout the hearing the two worked together, with Alexander frequently setting up topics upon which Joyce expounded. When Alexander said that the government's surveillance tools had stopped over 50 terror attacks, Joyce described four of them. And so on. Over the course of three hours, the two faced little in the way of critique.

Nonetheless, they were ready for a brew. Their more informal exchange came after Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan banged the gavel.
Scandal over! Jobs for life and "industry partners" secure....it's friggin' Miller time. Tomorrow we'll work on the extradition of that stinking IT contractor.

As I watch what is taking place, I have this sinking feeling in my stomach about our great country. His illness had taken an all too familiar pattern. It was reality and there was nothing I could do change it.

Communist Rebels Kidnap Five Philippine Soldiers
[An Nahar] Communist gunnies wearing military uniforms kidnapped five soldiers in the southern Philippines, in the latest of a series of violent acts following the collapse of peace talks, authorities said Tuesday.

The New People's Army guerrillas set up a roadblock on the outskirts of Davao City on Monday and seized the five soldiers as they were passing through on cycle of violences, said military front man Colonel Ramon Zagala.

He condemned the abduction, saying the soldiers were unarmed, in civilian clothes and on their way to buy supplies for a community feeding program when they were seized.

"Their objective is... to try to project power, to sow fear. You are sending a clear message to the community: the people who you think can help you.. this is what we can do with them," he told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The NPA has been waging a 44-year-old Maoist armed campaign that has claimed at least 30,000 lives. The military estimates the NPA has about 4,000 fighters.

The government had been hoping to sign a pact to end the rebellion before President Benigno Aquino ended his six-year term in 2016. But the government said in April that peace talks had collapsed.

Davao, the biggest city on the southern island of Mindanao, has long been a hotbed of communist insurgency.

DHS hopes to get same cyber-spying powers as NSA
[DAILYCALLER] Domestic spying capabilities used by the National Security Agency to collect massive amounts of data on American citizens could soon be available to the Department of Homeland Security -- a bureaucracy with the power to arrest citizens that is not subject to limitations imposed on the NSA.

Unlike the DHS, the NSA is an intelligence agency, not a domestic law enforcement agency. It cannot arrest those suspected of wrongdoing. That power of the federal government lies with agencies under the jurisdiction of the Justice Department, the Treasury, Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies.

The NSA and DHS have waged a long Capitol Hill pie fight over cybersecurity. Bills such as the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act and the Cybersecurity Act of 2012 have sought to clearly define the relationship between the two agencies, but struggled to get off the ground.

Until recently, the NSA's military access to domestic private sector records -- including personally identifiable consumer information -- fueled opposition to CISPA's passage from civil liberties advocates, the White House and Senate Democrats.

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, there was only one thought in the mouse's mind: I can do this! I can do this! Then the trap sprung...
Republican critics of the DHS believed the department was too incompetent and inexperienced to conduct meaningful cybersecurity oversight for the nation's critical infrastructure. Both CISPA and the Cybersecurity Act died in session last year.

The drive for an expanded DHS role in domestic spying, however, has been picking up steam. CISPA was reintroduced in the House of Representatives in February and passed in April. Although the bill stalled in the Senate, one of its most troubling portions remains intact: a provision granting private companies immunity from "any provision of the law" if they break privacy agreements between themselves and their customers to share private information with the federal government.

Pakistan registers concern over drone attacks at UNSC
[Pak Daily Times] Pakistain has told the UN Security Council that use of armed drones violates illusory sovereignty, causes civilian casualties, and puts communities at risk of reprisal attacks.

"Drone strikes radicalise disaffected communities and increase the number of terrorists. Urgent and intense negotiations are needed to address the issue of armed drones".

Pakistain's concern over drone attacks was highlighted at the United Nation's Security Council by Ambassador Masood Khan here on Monday while speaking at the Security Council debate on 'Children in Armed Conflict'.

We know that millions of children are trapped in wars and conflicts, he said, adding, they are killed, maimed, raped, and subjected to sexual violence. They are recruited, kidnapped and tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
; and are coerced into becoming part of armed conflicts.

Noting some progress in slowing down this scourage, especially in developing norms and standards, Ambassador Khan said much more needed to be done to ensure compliance, fight impunity and protect children's rights in the face of new risks because of the evolving nature of the conflict.

He also referred to the deployment of children as jacket wallahs and human shields, and said that schools continue to be attacked, particularly affecting girls' education. Persistent perpetrators of violence against children must be brought to justice through national judicial systems and where applicable through the use of international justice mechanisms, the Pak envoy told the 15-member Council.

He called for strengthening of the mandate of children and armed conflict, including its reporting and monitoring procedures. The focus, he said, should continue to be on situations of armed conflict and those threatening global peace and security.

Khan also called for efforts to ensure information collected through monitoring and reporting mechanism was accurate and verifiable. The Council should finalise objective, balanced listing and delisting criteria.

The terms "armed attacks" and "gangs" should be replaced with "terrorist attacks" and "terrorist groups" in cases where a clear determination had been made that the attacks were launched by terrorist groups.

Mardan suicide blast kills MPA, 34 others
[Pak Daily Times] A suicide bombing at a funeral in Mardan on Tuesday killed at least 35 people, including a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly member, and injured dozens, police said, the deadliest attack to hit the country in more than three months.
An additional 17 added to yesterday' corpse count...
The attack in Shergarh town in Mardan District came during funeral prayers for the owner of a local fuel station. Police said the politician appeared to be the target of the blast, which highlights the security challenges facing the new government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Newly-elected independent member of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Imran Mohmand was among the 35 people killed in the suicide attack, a government minister confirmed.

The provincial government spokesman Shaukat Yousafzai confirmed the killing of the MPA and that he was the target of the attack. "I have information from police that MPA Imran Mohmand is among those killed in the attack in Shergarh town in Mardan district," he told Daily Times. A local police official, Jaffer Khan, said, "The bomber came on foot and blew himself up near Imran Khan Mohmand, who seems to have been the target."

As the funeral prayers ended, a big explosion took place, a survivor of the attack said. He told media in Mardan that around 800 people were attending the funeral of Haji Abdullah, who was gunned down on Monday. A large number of people and elected parliamentarians were also present during the funeral. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced cash compensation for those killed and injured in the deadly suicide blast. Heirs of those killed in the blast would be given Rs 300,000 and the injured will get Rs100,000. Imran Mohmand was elected as an independent MPA from PK-27 constituency in Mardan District. He is the second Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly MPA who has fallen victim to terrorism since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf took power in the province on May 30.

Earlier, another PTI MPA, Fareed Khan, was gunned down in Hangu bazaar on June 4. "He was under threat and his office was attacked during election campaign," Shaukat Yousafzai said, adding that the provincial government had provided him with policemen for security, besides he had his personal guards. Shergarh borders Malakand region where the Taliban-linked militancy had wrecked havoc before the military was ordered to restore the state's writ in 2009. Mardan DIG Jaffar Khan said initial investigation revealed a suicide bomber struck the funeral. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, local police suspect the Taliban militants hand in the attack who security sources believe hold sway in Mardan District since Taliban were ousted from strongholds in Swat district.

7-Eleven Stores Operated 'Modern Day Plantation System,' Feds Claim
[ABCNEWS.GO] The owners of 7-Eleven franchises in New York and Virginia created a "modern day plantation system" in which undocumented workers were furnished with stolen identities and forced to work 100 hours a week for a fraction of their wages, according to a federal authorities.

Ten stores in New York and four in Virginia were seized today as part of the federal investigation which found the undocumented workers from Pakistan were given identities stolen from children and the deceased, according to federal prosecutor Loretta E. Lynch.

Farrukh Baig, his wife Bushra, and seven others were charged with fraud, identity theft and concealing illegal immigrants to work in their stores.
Farrukh Baig, his wife Bushra, and seven others were charged with fraud, identity theft and concealing illegal immigrants to work in their stores. Court records say they employed illegal workers since 2000, forced them to work long hours for less pay and required them to live in residences owned and controlled by the store owners.

"The 7-11 franchises seized today will be better known for their big fraud than their Big Gulp," said James Hayes, special agent in charge of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's office of investigations in New York.

The investigation, which is one of the largest criminal immigrant employment investigations ever by the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, began when several of the employees tipped off police to the longstanding practice, authorities said.

Federal authorities located at least 18 undocumented workers today and said they could face deportation.

Gaza's children play war in Palestinian summer camp
[Pak Daily Times] As the hot weather arrives in Gaza, teenagers head to the town of Rafah for summer camp -- not to play sports but to join war games organised by radical Palestinian group Islamic Jihad.

Abu Khaled insists it is like any other "youth camp, (but) includes combat training."
Youngsters wearing military fatigues and the movement's black insignia capture a fellow camper posing as an Israeli soldier and drag him away -- all part of being trained to "resist" the enemy.

Around 100 children under the age of 16 learn from members of Islamic Jihad's armed wing al Quds Brigades how to strip down an AK-47 assault rifle, crawl through tunnels and run across burning tyres amid the sound of explosions on their assault course.

"When I'm older I want to fight in al Quds Brigades and capture Israeli troops," said 12-year-old Ezz, who was this time playing the role of the unfortunate enemy soldier taken from his position atop a scorching sand dune.

Ezz is a pupil at a school in the Gaza Strip run by the UN's Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA.

Fellow camper Osama, holding a rifle, explains: "We learn to fight so that we're ready for our resistance against the Zionist enemy (Israel) who occupies our land and kills us."

The head military trainer at the camp, Abu Khaled, insists it is like any other "youth camp, (but) includes combat training."

NSA chief: We do not 'unilaterally' obtain data from Google, Facebook, Microsoft servers
Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, AOL, Verizon, and Apple might breathe a little easier today. Their denials of working with the NSA's PRISM program to turn over huge quantities of customer data over to the secretive U.S. intelligence agency just got a little bit more credible today thanks to testimony from NSA Director General Keith Alexander.

"The U.S. government does not unilaterally obtain information from the servers of U.S. companies," Alexander said. "Rather, the U.S. companies are compelled to provide these records by U.S. law using methods that are in strict compliance with that law."

Unfortunately, Alexander also referred to the companies as "our industry partners."
Other Google, Facecrook, AOL, Verizon, and Apple government partners include the IRS and possibly Homeland Security.

1984 - The Ministry of Truth -- Minitrue, in Newspeak -- was startlingly different from any other object in sight. It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, 300 metres into the air. From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party:

WAR IS PEACE

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Apple comes clean on NSA snooping - Washington Times
Apple didn't "come clean": it did nothing wrong, and their statement makes it clear. What they said was that they comply with the law: when they get a request from the government, their lawyers review it. If the request complies with the law then Apple releases the info. But they don't have a front-door gateway for NSA to snoop without authorization.

Apple is simply obeying current law. It can't do anything else.

Tunisia imams reject extremism
[MAGHAREBIA] More than 200 Tunisia holy mans launched a distress call to save mosques from the risk of religious extremism. They plan to hold a hunger strike during Ramadan.

On Monday (June 17th), imams from mosques in Tunis and Ben Arous staged a pre-strike sit-in outside the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

They met at the week-end to draw up their list of demands. The imams want the ministry to break the salafists' grip on mosques before the holy month begins.

The religious leaders will also be protesting "the deterioration of financial and moral conditions", Union of Imams head Fadhel Achour said on June 6th.

Dozens of mosques remain outside the ministry's control, "after being captured by salafist jihadists, who practice all kinds of violence", Achour said.

More than 1,000 imams have suffered acts of violence at the hands of salafists, yet the supervising ministry has neither investigated nor prosecuted any of these cases, Achour added.

"The complacency of the Ministry of Religious Affairs in addressing a number of issues will lead to negative results, especially since 178 mosques remain ... under the control of salafists," Bechir Arfaoui, the imam union official in Ben Arous, told Al Maghreb.

The salafists rule these Tunisian mosques by their own laws, imposing punishment as they see fit, he said.

"This is in addition to a policy of excommunication inflicted on those abstaining from performing prayers," Arfaoui said.

Citizens have also complained about the radical discourse within mosques that have thus far evaded the control of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

In the Tunis suburb of Debousville, many worshippers fled a neighbourhood mosque because of its imam's anarchic fatwas.

"A group claiming to belong to the salafi movement is controlling the mosque. In fact, one of them is accused in the murder of a security agent and is still wanted by the police," Kamal al-Hidri, a local resident in his twenties, told Magharebia.

"I can no longer pray behind a man who understands nothing in religion except for having a long beard, and for that I moved to pray in another mosque, despite its distance from my home," Hajj Taher said.

Better oversight of mosques is not the only demand citizens are making of their government. Tunisian authorities must also look at schools, participants at a Nidaa Tounes forum on "religion and co-existence" said this month in Gammarth.

"A revolution in the methods of education" is imperative, forum attendee Saloua Ghrissa said, "to establish the concepts of tolerance, citizenship and democracy, especially among youth".

"Including religion in educational institutions is worrisome because it could result in the establishment of takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
thought and closed readings of texts," the Zitouna University professor told Magharebia.

Nidaa Tounes head Beji Caid Essebsi opened the 2-day event on June 3rd by calling for a dialogue among religions.

"This is one of the best ways to establish solidarity and co-existence between peoples and cultures," the former prime minister said.

"We must believe in dignity, justice and tolerance as the supreme and common values," he added.

Iraq
Suicide bombers target Baghdad mosque, 26 dead
Two suicide bombers blew themselves up inside and near a Shiite mosque in Baghdad on Tuesday, killing 26 people and wounding 55, Iraqi officials said. Two police officers said the first bomber detonated his explosives at a security checkpoint near the mosque in BaghdadÂ’s northern Qahira neighborhood in an apparent attempt to distract the authorities. The district is a middle-class, Shiite-majority neighborhood.

Amid the commotion, a second bomber slipped into the mosque and blew himself up while worshippers were performing midday prayers, according to police.

Most of the casualties were among students from a nearby Imam al-Sadiq University for Islamic Studies. Police officials said the universityÂ’s Shiite students usually perform their midday prayers in the targeted mosque.

A medic in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualties.

China-Japan-Koreas
20 N.Korean Defectors Arrive from Laos
Twenty North Korean defectors have recently arrived in Seoul after weeks under the protection of the South Korean Embassy in Laos.

They boarded in Vientiane and arrived safely, a diplomatic source said Monday. Once they have been questioned they will be resettled here.

Their safe arrival follows the high-profile repatriation from Laos to North Korea on May 27 of seven teenage defectors who had reportedly been coerced by North Korean agents while the South Korean Embassy twiddled its thumbs.

Following an outcry here, South Korea on June 4 moved 18 other defectors from a safe house in Vientiane to the embassy compound. It also sheltered two more defectors who arrived in Laos later. The group, which includes children, disabled people, cancer patients and the elderly, lived together in three rooms of a temporary building in the embassy compound. All are reportedly in good health.

Defectors are normally interviewed by Lao authorities to establish whether they want to go to South Korea, but until May 20 the 20 defectors had not been questioned, raising fears that the established escape route through Laos would be closed following the closure of a similar route through Vietnam. The worry was that the North Korean regime had in some way leaned on its fellow communist regime in the underdeveloped Southeast Asian country, which used to quietly let North Korean defectors go to South Korea.

Lawmaker Kim Jae-won of the ruling Saenuri Party later went to Laos to ask for cooperation.
In this case a bribe would be honorable...
The Foreign Ministry in Seoul declined to confirm whether the 20 have arrived.

Food Shortages in N.Korea 'Not at Crisis Level'
As the famous American philosopher Wednesday Addams once said: wait...
The United States said North Korea's food shortages are limited to certain regions and do not constitute a food crisis.

Local media reports on Monday cited a paper by the U.S. Congressional Research Service earlier this month as showing that the lack of food could be termed chronic as of the middle of this year, but falls short of reaching the "crisis" level.

It added that while the U.S. is not considering providing food aid to the North at the present time, Seoul could bribe offer aid to help thaw long-frozen ties between the two Koreas.
That's a quaint way of offering a bribe...
The paper said the U.S. has provided over U.S.$13 billion in aid to North Korea since 1995.
Thus demonstrating that we are idiots...

Afghanistan
Dostum's Men Attack Jawzjan Governor's House
[Tolo News] An armed clash took place near the house of Jawzjan's Provincial Governor Mohammed Alim Sayee, in northern Jawzjan early Monday. According to reports, the attackers were sent by Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
, founder of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan Party.

The clash took place in Sheberghan city, capital of the province, when a group of gunnies belonging to Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum attacked the Governor's house. Three of the Dostum's men were maimed in the clash.

Speaking over phone, Mohammed Alim Sayee told TOLOnews, "Today (Monday) in the afternoon while I was heading back home, Gen. Dostum's gunnies attacked my house and the gun-battle between security forces and Dostum's men continued for 15 minutes."

Sayee said that Dostum had warned him over phone that if he doesn't accept his demands, he will take action against him.

However,
some people cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go...
the Governor did not provide more details about Dostum's demands.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the congregants were being herded into the paddy wagon...
several members of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan Party confirmed the clash.

"Armed men belonging to General Dostum wanted to attack Jowezjan Provincial Governor but his bodyguards prevented and a gun-battle ensued. In the clash attackers were maimed and we want an investigation in this regard," Senator and Deputy of National Islamic Movement Party Ismeal Monshi said.

On the contrary, other members of National Islamic Movement Party denied any military confrontation and said that General Dostum wanted to talk to Jowezjan Provincial Governor about the upcoming elections but the Governor refused.

"I can frankly say that no fighting had taken place. Bodyguards of Jowezjan Provincial Governor started firing in the air and Shebergahn residents panicked," Cultural Advisor for Gen. Dostum and MP Dr. Enayatullah Babur Farahmand said.

Both sides have urged the central government to investigate the clash. Motive behind the attack is not known at the moment.

#2  As predicted, it appears the situation is falling apart rather rapidly. Below is from a former colleague this morning:

The wide spread perception from all 3 the former G Chiefs, (Dostum/Uzbek, Atta/Tajik, Mohaqeq/Hazara) seems to be the Afghan Security Forces are not providing adequate security in Jowelsjan, Sare Pul, Samangan, Faryab, even Balkh provinces. They see Karzai as deliberately doing this to expose them to attacks, focusing Afghan Security Forces [ASF] efforts elsewhere in S. and Pashtun related areas. The Taliban have conducted some never seen before pretty brazen attacks, even right into Sheberghan itself, murdering some of Dostum's former Cdr's on their doorstep. The attackers got away and Afghan National Police/Security Forces [ANP/ASF] seen as not taking action to pursue.

IF one's gov't doesn't provide adequate security, would you arm yourself to protect your family and property?

#5  I just started reading Waiting for the Taliban: A Journey Through Northern Afghanistan by war correspondent Anna Badkhen, which collects the dispatches she wrote a few years ago for Foreign Policy during her return to that area for the first time since her original posting reporting there after 9/11. I haven't yet formed an opinion, but thus far she has reported the people believing themselves ignored in favour of Pashtunistan to the south by both the government and us. There is a small interview at the link, where she explains plainly.

Pakistan Government Reacts To Karzai's Speech
[Tolo News] Pakistain's Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday issued a statement and raised its concerns over Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai
... A former Baltimore restaurateur, now 12th and current President of Afghanistan, displacing the legitimate president Rabbani in December 2004. He was installed as the dominant political figure after the removal of the Taliban regime in late 2001 in a vain attempt to put a Pashtun face on the successor state to the Taliban. After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. His grip on reality has been slipping steadily since around 2007, probably from heavy drug use...
's recent remarks against one of the Pak state institutions.

In an interview with Pak private TV channel Geo, President Karzai said that the military and intelligence agency of Pakistain are adopting krazed killer methods based on religion to destabilise Afghanistan.

President Karzai said, "I have no complaints against the people of Pakistain because they shared their home and food with Afghans during the 'Jehad' years but we seriously have issues with the military and intelligence agency of Pakistain because they are using krazed killer methods based on religion to destabilize Afghanistan."

"The use of extremism as a tool against Afghanistan will one day put Pakistain itself into trouble," Karzai's office said in a statement on Sunday.

President Karzai said that the military apparatus of Pakistain and its intelligence agency has been always misusing the Afghan good-will to make Afghanistan's government work as their puppet and surrender to the evil will of that country (Pakistain).

The statement released by Pakistain's Foreign Affairs Ministry said, "The Government of Pakistain has noted with concern a recent remark by President Hamid Karzai against one of the Pakistain state institutions. In an interview to a local channel, the President has attempted to create an impression as if some institutions of Pakistain are not fully supporting the objectives of bringing peace to Afghanistan."

The statement further added, "The Government of Pakistain and all its institutions have unanimity of views on issues of national security and foreign policy. In this context, promoting peace and stability to Afghanistan is an important pillar of Pakistain's foreign policy which is supported by all state institutions. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the success of this policy requires reciprocal action and good will on the part of Afghan government."

"It is in our common interest to jointly address the common challenges of terrorism and extremism being faced by our region. The newly elected leadership of Pakistain has reiterated its resolve to fully support an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned grinding of the peace processor. Pakistain will continue to support reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan in all its earnest for achieving durable peace, stability and development in our region," the statement said.

Jordan Endorses Abu Qatada Extradition Treaty with Britain
[An Nahar] Jordan's King Abdullah II has endorsed a treaty with Britannia expected to pave the way for the extradition of radical holy man Abu Qatada who has resisted deportation for the past decade, official Petra news agency reported Tuesday.

Petra said the king issued a royal decree "endorsing the Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters between Jordan and the United Kingdom of Great Britannia and Northern Ireland".

The king's decision comes a week after parliament approved the treaty. But the vote needed King Abdullah's approval to become law.

Britannia expects the treaty to be ratified by June 21.

Deputy House Speaker Khalil Attieh told Agence La Belle France Presse last week that the text of the treaty approved by parliament "does not specifically mention Abu Qatada but it includes him and others".

Abu Qatada is wanted in Jordan where he was convicted in his absence of terror charges.

A Spanish judge once branded Abu Qatada the right-hand man in Europe of the late Osama bin Laden
... who is no longer with us, and won't be again...
, although Abu Qatada denies ever having met the late al-Qaeda leader.

The Jordanian terror suspect has been in and out of British prisons since 2002 as he fights successive government attempts to deport him to the tiny desert kingdom.

The 52-year-old holy man, who has been resident in Britannia since claiming asylum in 1993, is likely to face a retrial if he is returned to Jordan.

'Cousin marriages, diabetes lead to blindness'
[Pak Daily Times] A leading eye-care hospital said today the cousin marriages and diabetes are two major causes of blindness, which is growing with a fast pace in Pakistain.

The inherited diseases, including blindness, are due to the common practice of blood-related marriages, said Al-Shifa Trust President Lt Gen (r) Hamid Javaid.

Speaking at an awareness session, he said that many families prefer consanguineous marriages despite knowing the negative impact on the generations to come. More awareness needs to be created about the disease and the pitfall of cousin marriage. He said the premarital testing can help reduce the risks associated with the trend. "There are economic, social and cultural factors, including clan solidarity, interpersonal compatibility, preservation of family property, social protection for women, which are supporting marriages within the families," Hamid Javaid informed. He said that the habit of consuming a good quantity of carbohydrate-rich food can cause problems such as blindness. He also said that high amount of glucose resulted in inflammation and harms the retina and the capillaries that supply blood to the eyes.

4 die as Mexican security forces reinforce southern Chihuahua

By Chris Covert

Rantburg.com

An undisclosed number of Mexican security forces have been retasked to southern Chihuahua state in the wake of the kidnapping of a political candidate, according to Mexican news accounts.

According to a news report in the online edition of Yanciuc.com, Chihuahua governor Cesar Duarte Jaquez reportedly said that an undisclosed number of Mexican Army and Naval Infantry troops have been moved into southern Chihuahua and parts of Durango and Sinaloa states with the mission of "attacking criminal groups" which operate in the area.

According to the article, Durate referred specifically to the Golden Triangle, which is an area of the Mexican sierras where drugs are cultivated and where security is at a premium.

According to a direct quote in the Yancuic article, federal security forces are tasked with eliminating drug cultivation, recovering stolen vehicles, especially offroad trucks used in rough terrain, and combating criminal acts.

Governor Duarte mentioned that the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) has been providing intelligence in the new operation, probably referring to SEMAR's access to electronic intercepts.

In a separate news report which appeared on the website of El Sol de Parral news daily, a large convoy of security forces vehicles -- two Mexican Army, three Policia Estatal Unica, two of the Procuraduria General de la Republica (PGR), four Policia Ministerial and Policia Preventiva -- were spotted near Parral three days ago, near the villages of Villa Coronado, Villa Lopez, Pueblito de Allende and Valle de Allende. The news account said that the security forces had been conducting traffic stops searching for drug and guns. The group was also deployed to execute arrest warrants.

According to the report, the new deployments is an official response to the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Partido Revolucioanrio Institucional (PRI) candidate Jaime Orozco Madriga last week. Orozco Madriga was the PRI candidate for municipal president of Guadalupe y Calvo, which has been a focal point for drug and gang related violence in recent weeks.

A total of 14 political entities, including the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Zacatecas are in the midst of midterm elections for local deputies, municipal presidents and some town councils. At the moment news about official responses to criminal activities is at a premium as Article 41 of the Mexican Constitution forbids disseminating official government news while electioneering and voting is taking place.

The election is to take place July 7th, but the news blackout does not lift until after July 9th.

Every one of the states bordering the US is having their midterm elections except for Coahuila state, with Baja California going through an election for governor as well as for local deputies and municipal presidents.

Three years ago PRI won 11 of 14 state houses in a stunning defeat of its longtime rival Partido Accion Nacional (PAN), but a recent trend has emerged starting with the Michocacan election in November, 2011 in which PRI has failed to win majorities in local state legislatures, as well as in the national Chamber of Deputies.

PRI in that body is forced to rely on temporary alliances to advance its agenda.

According to a separate Yancuic article, seven candidates for political office in Chihuahua state have requested protection from the state electoral body, Instituto Estatal Electoral (IEE). The candidates have included PAN and PRI candidates as well as others, though none of the requests have come from candidates in southern Chihuahua state.

Meanwhile in Guadalupe y Calvo municipality three individuals, including one female were shot to death in a shootout Tuesday morning, according to Mexican news accounts.

According to a news account which appeared in the online edition of El Puente Libre, Arcelia Cardenas Villanueva, 28 and José Asael Calderon Escarcega, 25 and another unidentified man were shot to death near the remote village of San Julian de Piedra Larga in a gunfight in which AK-47 rifles were used. Authorities recovered five vehicles in the area including three which had been immolated.

Four unidentified individuals traveling in the area towards Meza de San Rafael at the same time as the shooting were forced to abandon their vehicle when it was hit by gunfire, and to seek refuge in an arroyo.

A total of 14 spent cartridge casings from an AK-47 rifle and one each spent cartridge casing from a .45 caliber and a .380 caliber weapon were recovered at the scene.

Much of the information had been relayed through the Mexican federal Ministerio Publico which is not bound by Article 41 restrictions.

A separate news report in El Tiempo de Mexico said that two individuals were hurt in the shooting.

Leaving Power Would be 'Betrayal,' Says Syria's Assad
[An Nahar] Quitting power while his government battles a countrywide uprising would be a "national betrayal," Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...
has told a German newspaper in an interview.

"If I decided to leave office under these circumstances, it would be national betrayal. But it's another question if that's what the people want," he told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"Elections or a referendum are the way to know if the people want you to quit your post," said Assad.

His remarks were published in full on state news agency SANA a day after the German daily published extracts from the interview.

Assad's departure has been a key demand since the early days of the uprising that began in March 2011 with peaceful demonstrations, before devolving into a brutal armed conflict.

The violence has killed more than 93,000 people, according to the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
, but Assad has repeatedly insisted he will not step down and will be in office at least until the 2014 presidential election.

"The presidential mandate finishes in 2014. (We're) in a time of crisis... and it is normal not to leave the country," Assad said.

Deadly car bomb hits soldiers near Damascus
A car bomb killed an undetermined number of soldiers and wounded at least 20 others late Sunday at an army checkpoint near a military airport in Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

“There are at least 20 soldiers wounded, there are also some dead but we don’t know how many,” said the Observatory.

The explosion, close to the Mazzeh military airport in the western suburbs of Damascus, was heard in several neighbourhoods in the capital and flames were visible from a distance, the Britain-based group said.

Director of the Observatory, Rami Abdel Rahman, said the airport was as big as the capitalÂ’s international airport and was used by President Bashar Al Assad and other senior figures in his regime. The military airport is guarded by the armyÂ’s elite Fourth Division, which is responsible for security in and around Damascus. It is led by AssadÂ’s brother Maher Al Assad.

The last attack in the capital was on Tuesday, when twin suicide bombers targeted a police station in the city centre killing at least 14 people and wounding more than 30 others.

Libya universities face security issues. Really.
[MAGHAREBIA] Libya is working on improving security on university campuses after several incidents prompted student strikes in various cities.

A joint security committee including student union members, university security personnel, and representatives from the interior ministry was formed on Thursday (June 13th) following a student protest two days prior in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...

During that meeting, Interior Minister Colonel Mohamed al-Sheikh, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr Mohammed Hassan Abubaker and Tripoli University Dean Almadani Dkheel discussed the deteriorating security situation in the university, as well as the recent student and university worker sit-ins.

The interior ministry will train university guards, according to Libya Herald. It remains unclear, however, whether previously unarmed security personnel will now have access to weapons.

Besides attacks on female students, shootouts have erupted on campus. At times, young men attended class with handguns on them. University security personnel have repeatedly said that they were powerless to disarm anyone. In recent weeks, several guards did not report for work.

"I urge all those concerned, whether from the university or from the outside to co-operate with so that the university can meet its obligations towards society and perform its noble message for which it has been established," Dkheel said.

In Sirte, the university remains closed until tomorrow, following deadly festivities last week.

Three people were killed last Thursday and six others maimed, including some at death's door. The fight started on Wednesday outside the university campus and moved inside the next day.

The festivities are said to have begun as a tribal quarrel between two families, before escalating, according to Libya Herald.

Firearms were used during the festivities, national security director Col. Jamal Atallah said. The incident is under investigation, he added.

"About 15 people, including seven girls, were maimed in these festivities," Sirte University student Youssef Ismali said. "Four of the girls received gunshot wounds, while the others sustained light shrapnel wounds."

In the meantime, the Zawiya Martyrs Brigade and the military police are assuming responsibility for the university's security.

Although last week's student strike was not total, student union leaders were satisfied of the impact they had.

Tripoli University student union leader Mohamed Qashut underlined the stark violations of the rights of students, teaching staff members and university workers.

"Tripoli University has turned into a den and a shelter for corrupters, saboteurs and outlaws," he said.

Qashut demanded that the interior ministry "provide all security capabilities for its members, issue special cards for them, set up electronic gates, and install a surveillance camera system".

He also demanded the removal of all illegal security groups that are currently present on university grounds.

Home Front: WoT
Senate rejects border fence
Senators on Tuesday rejected building the 700 miles of double-tier border fencing Congress authorized just seven years ago, with a majority of the Senate saying they didnÂ’t want to delay granting illegal immigrants legal status while the fence was being built.

The 54-39 vote to reject the fence shows the core of the immigration deal is holding. The vote broke mostly along party lines, though five Republicans, including Sen. Marco Rubio and the rest of the billÂ’s authors, voted against the fence, and two Democrats voted for it.
McCain voted against, but in 2008 he called for the fence to be completed as he campaigned for the Presidency...
Republicans had offered the fence as a way to build the confidence of voters skeptical that the government will enforce its laws, but opponents said building more fencing is costly, would take too long, and shouldnÂ’t be dictated by Washington.

“I think we should leave that to the best judgment of the Border Patrol,” said Sen. John McCain, one of the eight senators who wrote the immigration bill.
Unless they want it...
Sen. John Thune, South Dakota Republican, proposed the border fence amendment, which would have prevented the administration from granting any illegal immigrants legal status under the bill until at least 350 miles of double-tier fencing has been erected, and would withhold full citizenship rights until 700 total miles have been built.
What this says is that the Democrats have won the debate in the Senate. For whatever reason, there will be no delays in legalizing the eleven million plus illegal immigrants in our country and no checks on millions more coming in.
Minutes after the border fence, senators also voted to weaken current law that requires the government to have biometric checks such as fingerprints or eye-scans for every visitor to the U.S. — a recommendation of the 9/11 commission that looked into the terrorist attacks on Washington and New York.
So they're truly for open borders, security be damned...
Senators said it is too expensive to check fingerprints at all air, land and sea ports of entry.
What have we been spending $3 trillion a year plus on then?
Instead, the bill calls for photographic checks at air and sea ports, but excludes land ports.

“When is our federal government going to keep its promises when it comes to the issue of border security?” said Mr. Thune, the sponsor of the fence proposal.

Mr. Rubio said he supports building a border fence, and pointed to $1.5 billion included in his bill for more infrastructure, which he said will go to a fence plan. Mr. Rubio said Mr. Thune’s amendment didn’t lay out the details for “a specific border plan.”
Rubio doesn't have a plan, either, and he doesn't have any threshold for a border fence. He's for open borders even as he says he isn't.
“Therefore, I will oppose his amendment and instead continue to work with my Republican colleagues to arrive at a new measure that improves on the significant border security measures already in the bill,” the Florida Republican siad.
One that says nothing but lets him campaign for the Presidency...
The border now has 651 miles of barriers, but only 36 miles are at least double-tier fencing. Another 316 miles are single-tier pedestrian fencing, and the rest — 299 miles — are vehicle barriers that still allow wildlife, and people, to cross.

#1  By most accounts, 11.0Milyuhn illegals is conservative + subjective estimate, wid the actual number likely to be times higher.

* IIRC STARS-N-STRIPES > US SENATORS: IMMIGRATION REFORM BILL KEY FOR GOP IN 2016.

* RELATED CNN > BOEHNER: NO WAY TO GET IMMIGRATION BILL TO HOUSE FLOOR WIDOUT MAJORITY GOP SUPPORT.

* NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO > CBO: 8.0MILYUHN TO GAIN LEGAL STATUS IN BUDGET BILL.

Most of the above illegals are more likely than not to vote Democrat anyway, so IMO the GOP-Right gains little or nothing by voting "safe" wid the Democrats as opposed to a dedicated Conservative platform.

The Democrats or DemoLeft are out to ensure the GOP is destroyed as a political force + movement in "Globalist" OWG Amerika + Washington 2020-2025.

The Grand Turk
Turkey PM Claims Victory after Protest Crackdown
[An Nahar] Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday claimed victory over anti-government protesters after a heavy crackdown, as police raided homes and tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
dozens of demonstrators in a bid to stamp out nearly three weeks of unrest.

After a weekend of festivities sparked by the eviction of protesters from Istanbul's Gezi Park, the focal point of the protests, demonstrators have struggled to regroup and police have since fought only sporadic battles with smaller groups of demonstrators across the country.

Overnight, riot police in the capital Ankara briefly fired tear gas and water cannon at protesters who hurled back stones and hid behind makeshift barricades, but there were no other reports of confrontations.

In Istanbul, dozens of demonstrators switched to silent protests, standing still in quiet defiance in the main Taksim Square located next to Gezi Park.

As the protests appeared to lose their intensity, Erdogan said he had overcome the crisis, seen as the biggest challenge yet to his Islamic-rooted government's decade-long rule.

"Our democracy has been tested again and came out victoriously," the premier told members of his ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) to roaring applause.

"The people and the AKP government have foiled the plot... hatched by traitors and their foreign accomplices."

Confident he has weathered the storm, he warned against any resurgence of the protests.

"From now on, there will be no question of showing any tolerance to people or organizations who engage in violent acts."

Syrians Protest in Damascus Backing Turkey Demos
[An Nahar] Dozens of Syrians gathered in the capital Damascus on Tuesday for a rare demonstration in support of Turkish protests against the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"Erdogan leave," the demonstrators chanted, waving Syrian flags and pictures of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...
in front of the Turkish embassy in Damascus.

The demonstration was a rare public protest in Syria, which has been roiled for more than two years now by a conflict that began with peaceful demonstrations calling for regime change.

Those demonstrations, which began in March 2011, were forcibly put down, with Syrian security forces firing on unarmed protesters.

But the protest movement in Turkey has been embraced by the Syrian regime, which has seen once-warm ties with Erdogan's government disintegrate over Ankara's support for the Syrian uprising.

"American military bases (in Turkey) are incapable of protecting that arrogant sultan," one demonstrator, Abdel Salam Harrash, told Syrian state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?.
The station described the demonstrations as "against Erdogan's policy, which is hostile to freedom and supports gunnies acting in Syria".

The Syrian government routinely describes all those involved in the anti-Assad uprising as "terrorists," and has strongly criticized Ankara for supporting the rebellion.

Tunisia Salafists Get 5 Years for Torching Sufi Shrine
[An Nahar] Six people belonging to Tunisia's hardline Salafist movement have each been handed five year jail sentences for torching an important Sufi shrine, the country's Sufi union said on Tuesday.

"It's the first time such a sentence has been pronounced. It shows that the law can be applied in Tunisia when the political will exists," Mohamed El Heni, one of the union's leaders, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Four of those convicted were already in jug while the remaining two are on the run, he added.

They were sentenced on Monday over an arson attack last October on the tomb of Saida Manoubia in the capital, one of the country's main Sufi shrines, which was completely gutted.

The attack came amid a spate of similar violence by Tunisia's increasingly assertive Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
, ultra-conservative Moslems who consider that venerating saints and their shrines is blasphemous and contrary to Islam.

According to the Sufi union, some 50 holy sites were targeted between last summer and early 2013, but Heni said "no arrests have taken place except in the case of the Manoubia shrine".

He said one reason for this was the fact that the attacks took place at night in remote areas, but also because of "laxity by the public authorities" towards the Moslem bully boys.

Heni mentioned in particular that no one had yet been locked away
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
over the fire in January that destroyed the famed mausoleum of Sidi Bou Said, a prime tourist destination also in a suburb of Tunis.

The ruling Islamist party Ennahda "has not entirely cut the cord with the Salafists," he said.

Since the revolution that overthrew Zine El Abdine Ben Ali in January 2011, radical Islamists suppressed under former dictator have been implicated in a wave of attacks, often targeting Sufi shrines and cultural festivals, and culminating last September in an assault on the U.S. embassy.

Ennahda has been strongly criticized for failing to rein in the Salafists and prevent such violence, although it has taken a tougher stand in recent months faced with the discovery of al-Qaeda-linked groups along the border with Algeria.

The two-year suspended prison sentences given last month to 20 Islamists who took part in the U.S. embassy attack were strongly criticized for being too lenient.

Afghanistan
Karzai announces peace talks as Afghans take over security
[Pak Daily Times] The Taliban opened a political office in Doha on Tuesday, as Washington said it hoped to begin talks with its Afghan foe in the Qatari capital "in a couple of days."

The group, which has waged a deadly insurgency against US-led troops ever since its government in Kabul was tossed after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, pledged it would never allow Afghan territory to be used to threaten a foreign country.

Taliban representatives and Qatari officials opened the "political bureau of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" in Doha, an AFP photographer reported.

The office is intended to open dialogue with the international community and Afghan groups for a "peaceful solution" in Afghanistan, office front man Mohammed Naim told news hounds in Doha.

Afghanistan peace talks between representatives of the United States and the Taliban will take place on Thursday in Doha, a senior US official said on Tuesday.

The Taliban, whose Kabul government was targeted in 2001 because it sheltered now slain al Qaeda leader the late Osama bin Laden

After the 2004 presidential election, he was declared president regardless of what the actual vote count was. He won a second, even more dubious, five-year-term after the 2009 presidential election. "Afghanistan's High Peace Council will travel to Qatar to discuss peace talks with the Taliban," Karzai said in Kabul, referring to the council he formed in late 2010.

"We hope that our brothers the Taliban also understand that the process will move to our country soon," Karzai said of the fundamentalist Islamic group that ruled the country with an iron fist from 1996 to 2001.

Arslan Says Accusing Hizbullah of Inciting Sedition Is 'Unjust'
[An Nahar] Lebanese Democratic Party leader MP Talal Arslan considered on Tuesday that accusing Hizbullah of of inciting sedition in Leb "is unjust and an infringement on the deaders' blood."

"Accusing Hizbullah's resistance of inciting strife in the country is unfair and an infringement on every honorable countryman and on the blood shed by the deaders," Arslan said in a statement.

He stressed: "Stop the distortion, the lies and the offenses."

"We understand that not everyone agrees with some or most of the resistance's ideas in Leb. But we do not understand how a group can resort to manipulating facts and distorting the truth in such an unacceptable manner that does not serve Leb's interests."

Arslan expressed: "We are at a stage when there are no morals in political relations. The political speech has tanked."

"This indicates that some factions want to link the situation in Leb to regional and foreign interests, no matter what was the price," he noted.

A delegation from the March 14 alliance on Tuesday handed President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
a memo that calls for Hizbullah's "immediate" pullout from Syria and the deployment of the Lebanese army along the border with the war-torn country.

The signatories claimed that the party's role in the fighting is a clear violation of the Constitution, the illusory sovereignty of the Lebanese state and international resolutions.

At Least 9,000 Flee Northern Nigeria Violence
[An Nahar] At least 9,000 people have fled violence in northern Nigeria and crossed into neighboring countries as a government offensive aims to end a four-year Islamist insurgency, the U.N. said on Tuesday.

In addition to those refugees, a local official in northeastern Nigeria, where the violence has been concentrated, has said some 19,000 wheat and rice farmers have been chased away from fields, raising concerns over potential food shortages.

The United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
said aid workers had found more than 3,000 people along the border inside Cameroon, which neighbors northeastern Nigeria, where the violence has been concentrated.

The number of those who have fled to neighboring Niger was recently put at more than 6,000.

"Most of those who have arrived so far are women and kiddies," Adrian Edwards, front man for the U.N. high commissioner for refugees, told news hounds in Geneva of the refugees in Cameroon.

"They are being hosted in churches and schools, and relying on food from the churches and local population,"

Those who have fled to Niger include Nigerians as well as citizens of Niger and Chad, Edwards said. The U.N. refugee agency has sent an aid convoy to the area of Niger where the refugees are located.

The Nigerian government imposed a state of emergency in three northeastern states in May and launched an offensive in an effort to crush the insurgency by Islamist Death Eater group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...

KPk government seeks to emulate Caliphate
[Pak Daily Times] The Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) led government has presented a welfare oriented budget in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
with special focus on reforms in education, health and police departments besides ending the VIP culture.

This was the gist of post budget presser jointly addressed on Tuesday by Senior Minister Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Siraj-ul-Haq and Provincial Minister for Information Shaukat Ali Yousafzai.

"Our role model is governance during the tenure of Caliphs and we will try our best to follow them in regard to provision of basic facilities to people and in running the departments," said Siraj-ul-Haq.

He said the budget has been prepared within a very short span of time of five days and main focus was on welfare-oriented schemes, as the government wants to benefit the masses.

He said the chief minister has directed the cabinet that people could feel positive change in governance within a period of at least two months.

Siraj-ul-Haq said the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government is trying to end VIP culture and for this purpose the chief minister has decided not to reside in CM house. He said personally he is not using air condition in his office, as ordinary people cannot avail this facility.

The provincial government has decided to cut 50 percent expenditure of the chief minister and governor houses besides imposing ban on lavish treatment of parliamentarians and high-ranking officials.

In the budget with a total outlay of Rs 344 billion, a big chunk of Rs 162 billion is reserved for welfare purposes. While Rs 118 billion will be spent on development schemes of the province. An amount of Rs 63 billion is reserved for meeting administrative expenditure.

Despite limited resources, the government decided to increase salary of government employees by 15 percent along with pension. However now, he continued, the government servants would have to perform well and live up to the expectations of the public.

Similarly, he added, the minimum wage, which was fixed at Rs 7,000 per month, has been increased to Rs 10,000.

The government has declared educational emergency in the province with the objective of improving the education system and improve literacy ratio. The education budget has been increased to Rs 13.83 billion for the coming fiscal year from Rs 12.18 billion in the 2012-13 fiscal.

In response to a question about recovery of arrears under net hydel profit, finance minister said the Jirga system, formed during MMA tenure, would be revived to hold talks with federal government. He expressed the hope that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
will give due consideration to the arguments of KPK government about payment of net hydel profit arrears.

He said the government would receive Rs 6 billion as net hydel profit and Rs 25 billion as arrears from the same head.

The government also announced giving a further five years exemption on the property tax to the industrial units keeping in view massive scheduled power outages, unrest and decline in industrial production in the province.

About the allocations of development funds to MPAs, Siraj-ul-Haq said funds will be allocated as presently the local bodies do not exist and therefore MPAs have to concentrate on these issues.

When asked about use of discretionary fund by chief minister, Siraj said earlier it was proposed that the CM will not utilise discretionary fund, but it was approved later on since the government needs such funds in case of emergencies.

1 Dead, 4 Hurt as Asir Supporters, Resistance Brigades Clash in Abra
[An Nahar] Clashes erupted on Tuesday afternoon between supporters of Islamist holy man Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir and members of the Hizbullah-affiliated Resistance Brigades in the Sidon neighborhood of Abra, leaving at least one person dead and four others maimed.

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said the fighting broke out between Asir supporters and "Mahmoud al-Sous' group, which belongs to the Resistance Brigades."

"Several people were killed and maimed in the clash that erupted in the town of Abra, east of Sidon. One of the dead was identified as Mohammed Hashisho and four other people were maimed," state-run National News agency reported.

Media reports said rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) were used in the festivities as Voice of Leb (93.3) said a mortar shell was fired.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Council of Boskone, Helmuth had turned a paler shade of blue. Star-A-Star had struck again...
al-Jadeed television said "masked gunnies deployed across Abra as residents fled the area," adding that "gunnies loyal to Sheikh al-Asir are trying to storm apartments belonging to Hizbullah in Sidon's Abra."

MTV also said masked gunnies and snipers deployed heavily on the rooftops of buildings in Abra and that the army was shooting back at the sources of gunfire.

"Things have returned to normal and traffic resumed in Sidon as the army deployed in the streets," al-Manar television reported in the evening.

The Army Command had issued an ultimatum to "all gunnies in Sidon to immediately withdraw from the streets," warning that troops "will open fire on any gunman and will shoot back at the sources of gunfire."

Sources told Future TV that "an agreement on a ceasefire in Abra has been reached and the army started deploying in the region."

"Reports said an agreement sponsored by Sidon's mufti Sheikh Salim Sousan was reached with Sheikh al-Asir to withdraw gunnies from Abra," al-Jadeed said.

Later, Asir told LBCI: "We give a deadline until Monday to evacuate Hizbullah's apartments in Abra."

OTV had reported earlier that "Hizbullah has committed itself not to advance towards the rival positions in Sidon until the moment and any other claims are untrue."

"Hizbullah is keen on pacification but will not allow any change on the ground in Sidon and the neighboring villages," sources told OTV.

Earlier on Tuesday, LBCI television said unknown individuals intercepted a van belonging to a water supply company owned by Asir's brother in al-Qayaa in northern Sidon.

"As the driver and his assistant were distributing water in the al-Qayaa area, a group assaulted them, forcing them to escape from the car which collided into a wall," LBCI added.

Asir's supporters said the attackers belong to the Resistance Brigades.

Voice of Leb said Asir had vowed not to stay silent over the "criminal act" against his brother.

Waziristan native asks Supreme Court to stop drone attacks
[Pak Daily Times] The Supreme Court has been moved on Tuesday to stop the drone attacks in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

Moving the petition in person under Article 184(3) of the constitution, Mando Jan, a resident of South Wazoo, has claimed that this is the first ever petition in the SC on drone attacks, filed by a son of the soil. The petitioner made secretaries of interior, foreign affairs, defence and information ministries and United States Ambassador to Pakistain as respondents in his petition.

The petitioner told Daily Times that though the SC's institution branch raised objection to the inclusion of US Ambassador to Pakistain as respondent but he removed this objection by excluding his name in the petition.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bunker, his Excellency called a hurried meeting of his closest advisors. It was to be his last. They discussed the officers's efficiency rating system...
it has been learnt that Wukala Mahaz (lawyers front) had also filed a petition against drone strikes two years ago as Dr Abdul Basit, counsel for the applicant said the SC had fixed that petition twice but could not be taken up due to time constraints. He also urged the court to hear petitions against drone strikes.

Mando Jan submitted in his petition that according to the report, based on physical verification, submitted by the political authorities of North Waziristan Agency, 896 Pak non-combatants were killed during the last five years till December 2012 adding that in these drone attacks only 47 foreigners were killed and 6 were maimed.

The petitioner complained that unfortunately, none of the civil society, NGOs, media and even superior judiciary of Pakistain had taken serious notice of brutal killings through drone strikes. He contended that killing and causing serious bodily and mental harm to inhabitants of Pakistain and failure to protect their lives and systematically causing the denial of their right of life and liberty tantamount practically in derogation of their right guaranteed to them by Article 4, 9 and 14 of the constitution.

The petitioner also stated that American drone attacks with or without the consent of respondents against the citizens was in derogation of Article 245 of the constitution, adding that the constitution does not permit foreign forces to attack the civilians and take their lives with or without the consent of civil or military power.

Referring to the Geneva Convention of 1949, he also contended that external aggression committed by USA through drone strikes was tantamount to crime of murder under the law of the land and crime of genocide and apartheid under the international law.

"The people of Pakistain had expressed happiness over the successful experiment of Air Defence Unit of the Pak Army. Brig (Retd) Masood had also said Pakistain has capability of downing drones but the government does not want to spoil relations with USA. In such circumstances, the respondent No1 is, duty bound to take the issue of drone attacks to the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
Security Council to immediately stop the drone attacks", he added.

Mando Jan said that the SC being obliged under the constitution and its code of conduct to protect defend and preserve the constitution might issue the notice to the respondents to file a comprehensive report about the number of drone strikes done so far and the law under which such strikes were being done.

"It is believed that merely by a simple notice, the drone strikes would be stopped as the US government is vigilant and respectful to the judiciary", he added. The petitioner requested the SC to direct respondents to stop the drone attacks causing deaths of innocent people of FATA.

Gen. Dostum Distributing Weapons to His Followers: Jowzjan Governor
[Tolo News] Jowzjan Governor Mohammed Alim Sayee on Tuesday said that the Founder of National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum
...ethnic Uzbek warlord who distinguished himself fighting the Soviets and the Taliban. The story that he had a bad guy run over with a tank is an exaggeration. It was an armored personnel carrier...
is illegally distributing weapons to his followers.

The Governor said that Gen. Dostum is trying his best to make the northern part of the country insecure and distributing weapons to his followers.

He has asked the central government to take immediate action and prevent the illegal distribution of weapons. He added that if the government does not act now then northern Afghanistan will become extremely insecure.

"Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum has distributed weapons to his followers in some districts of Jowzjan province and this is creating concerns among the people," Mohammad Alem Sayee said.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Nunzio wondered: Where the hell was Chumbaloni? And where was his $600?...
Spokesman of the National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan Kanja Kargar has accepted the claims and said that the weapons are being distributed by Dostum with an aim to assure security in the district.

The Spokesman further went on to say that it is not being done to oppose the government.

"Gen Abdul Rashid Dostum enjoys certain popularity in the Northern provinces because he is the Head of National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan as well as the Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief of the Afghan Army. Gen. Dostum has distributed weapons in some regions which is not concerning because the step has been taken to enhance security in the region," Spokesman Kanja Kargar told TOLOnews over phone.

Moreover, a number of Jowzjan's residents have raised concerns over the ongoing activities in the province.

Mohammad Alem Sayee who is also the Deputy of National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan, asked the government to take legal action against Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum.

The development happened after an armed clash took place near the house of Jawzjan's Provincial Governor Mohammed Alem Sayee, in Sheberghan city, on Monday.

According to reports, the attackers belonged to Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, founder of the National Islamic Movement Party of Afghanistan.

The clash took place when a group of gunnies belonging to Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum attacked the Governor's house. Three of the Dostum's men were also injured in the clash.

Afghan Journalist's Union Condemns Khawasi's 'Jihad' Against Media
[Tolo News] Afghanistan's National Journalist's Union (ANJU) on Monday strongly condemned the recent speech made by MP Abdul Satar Khawasi in the Lower House of the Afghan Parliament and his declaration of 'Jihad' against media organizations.

ANJU questioned the silence maintained over Khawasi's speech by the Ministry of Information and Culture.

The Union also criticised the Ministry of Information and Culture over its failure to establish the Mass Media Commission.

"First of all, declaring Jihad is not the authority of everyone, only certain religious holy mans have that authority and I can surely say that Mr Khawasi does not have it," President of the Afghanistan National Journalists Union Abdul Hamid Mobarez said.

Reactions from the Union came in after Khawasi announced 'Jihad' against a number of media outlets in his speech.

Khawasi said that several media organizations are acting irresponsibly and work only for the foreigner's interests.

On Sunday, the Nai Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan also condemned the recent speech made by Khawasi.

Nai taking a stance against Khawasi said that circles inside the Parliament and government are trying to attack media and curtail its freedom.

Meanwhile,
...back at the desert island, Bert was realizing to his horror that he'd had only one bottle for one message, and he'd forgotten to include a return address...
officials talked about the role of Minister of Information and Culture Sayed Makhdoom Raheen in delaying the setting up of Mass Media Commission.

"The Minister of Culture and Information, Head of High Council of Media and Chairman of Media Violation Evaluation Commission want to control the media," Afghanistan Journalist Union Executive Director Fahim Dashty said.

Swiss money laundering case buried once and for all
[Pak Daily Times] The Swiss government has in a letter to the government of Pakistain refused to reopen graft cases against President Asif Ali Ten Percent Zardari
... husband of the late Benazir Bhutto, who has been singularly lacking in curiosity about who done her in ...

The Law Ministry, which received the Swiss government's response to the letter written to it by the government of Pakistain following the apex court's order in the NRO case, opened the sealed envelope on Tuesday. The ministry, in an official statement issued on Wednesday night, said that Pakistain's ambassador to Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
sent a fax on June 18, 2013 to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs secretary forwarding the letter dated June 13, 2013 along with enclosures received from Nicolas Jeandin of the law firm Fontanetassocies Geneva, conveying decisions of the attorney general of Geneva (with English translation) relating to the SGS/Cotechna money laundering case.

The decision of the attorney general, Geneva, is dated February 4, 2013. After describing the facts relating to the case, it states that the Public Ministry of Geneva has decided not to review the closure order dated August 25, 2008 on the grounds that the statutory limitation period of fifteen years has expired; no new evidence or facts have been revealed; and the Republic of Pakistain procedures constitute an "abuse of power" inasmuch as it is "demanding resumption of the criminal procedure P/11105/1997while maintaining that such resumption could not take place."

Annex attached to the decision states that an appeal could be filed before the Criminal Appeal Court within ten days. According to the Law Ministry's statement, relevant files relating directly to the subject are presently not traceable in the Law and Justice Division, ambassador in Switzerland was requested to send Law Ministry by fax copies of all correspondence available with him.

Sweden to Send up to 160 Peacekeepers to Mali
[An Nahar] Sweden's parliament voted Tuesday in favor of sending up to 160 troops to Mali on July 1 for a maximum of one year in support of a U.N. peacekeeping mission to the country.
Ja, sure!
Deputies adopted a proposal from the center-right government, which said that in "normal circumstances" the Swedish contingent would be around 70.
"Ve bane here to keep the peace, yew betcha!"
The Swedish military will also provide materiel to the U.N. mission.

"Armed bad boy groups and criminal groups have since the beginning of 2012 committed extensive acts of cruelty which have caused great human suffering in Mali," parliament wrote in a statement, saying this justified the U.N. mission.

Parliament approved a maximum cost of 85 million kronor (10 million euros, $13 million) for the Swedish effort.

The U.N. force being deployed in Mali, known under the acronym MIASMA MINUSMA, is to take over security duties from French forces who entered Mali in January to halt an Islamist advance and help the government re-establish its authority over the vast country.

Elephant tramples girl to death in Nepal
[Bangla Daily Star] An elephant trampled a 12-year-old girl to death after dragging her away from her home in a remote region of southeastern Nepal, police said yesterday.

Three members of the girl's family managed to flee when the elephant stormed into their rural home on Monday night but the youngster was unable to escape in time, police officer Pralhad Keshari told AFP.

Keshari said police chased the elephant away following the attack at the home on farmland near Dholbazar, a village on the border with India, 370 kilometres(230 miles) southeast of Kathmandu.

Nepal has seen a growing number of such deadly attacks on humans, with deforestation forcing wildlife to stray into villages as they hunt for food.

A tiger mauled two people to death in central Nepal last month, dragging one of the victims from a hut.
