Portland OR Wacko Murders Good Samaritans
Anti-Islamic nut-job was harassing some Muslim women at the train station in the liberal bastion of Portland, Oregon. Three good Samaritans tried to defend the women and two were killed and one badly wounded for their efforts. Evil guns were not involved. Not a classic WoT Ops entry but seems the most appropriate place to put it.
[WashingtonPost] Christian, 35, is accused of fatally stabbing two men Friday night as they tried to intervene when he shouted anti-Muslim hate speech at two young women on a light-rail train in Portland. He is being held on two counts of aggravated murder and one count of attempted murder, among other charges, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The attack comes as Portland has weathered rising tensions between groups with fiercely opposing views, including white nationalists, right-wing extremists, anarchists and so-called left-wing "antifascists," known as the "antifa."

#1  The Washington Post won't let me read your article without subscribing, Glenmore, but a subsequent article from the Post makes it clear this was not specifically an attack on supporters of Muslims:

According to witnesses, a white male passenger riding an eastbound MAX train early Friday afternoon began yelling what “would best be characterized as hate speech toward a variety of ethnicities and religions,” police said. Some of the slurs were directed at two female passengers, one of whom was wearing a hijab, according to police.

“This suspect was on the train and he was yelling and ranting and raving a lot of different things, including what we characterized at hate speech or biased language,” Portland police spokesman Pete Simpson said at a news conference Friday evening.

And:

Simpson added that it did not appear that the suspect or the victims had any relationship with one another.

“We don’t know if (the suspect) has mental-health issues or was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or all of the above,” Simpson said. “With this incident, we’re obviously in early stages of the investigation.”

You are right that this is not a classic WoT article, though we do include attacks on Muslims under that heading when appropriate -- natives attacking "refugee" hostels, for instance -- so it's understandable that you put it here. But the additional information makes it sound like the police don't really believe this is an anti-Muslim attack, merely another crazy. The Portland police just arrested a man who has been throwing his semen at people, so clearly they are familiar with the signs. So I am moving it to Lurid Crime Tales. But because of the current atmosphere, I'm leaving it on Page 1.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
It's Time to Get Rid of Donald Trump
Geez. Tell the Krauts to pony up a few miserable marks, and they go off on the guy.
[Spiegel] Donald Trump is not fit to be president of the United States. He does not possess the requisite intellect and does not understand the significance of the office he holds nor the tasks associated with it. He doesn't read. He doesn't bother to peruse important files and intelligence reports and knows little about the issues that he has identified as his priorities. His decisions are capricious and they are delivered in the form of tyrannical decrees.

He is a man free of morals. As has been demonstrated hundreds of times, he is a liar, a racist and a cheat. I feel ashamed to use these words, as sharp and loud as they are. But if they apply to anyone, they apply to Trump. And one of the media's tasks is to continue telling things as they are: Trump has to be removed from the White House. Quickly. He is a danger to the world.

Trump is a miserable politician. He fired the FBI director simply because he could. James Comey had gotten under his skin with his investigation into Trump's confidants. Comey had also refused to swear loyalty and fealty to Trump and to abandon the investigation. He had to go.
And then there's the downside...
Witnessing an American Tragedy

Trump is also a miserable boss. His people invent excuses for him and lie on his behalf because they have to, but then Trump wakes up and posts tweets that contradict what they have said. He doesn't care that his spokesman, his secretary of state and his national security adviser had just denied that the president had handed Russia (of all countries) sensitive intelligence gleaned from Israel (of all countries). Trump tweeted: Yes, yes, I did, because I can. I'm president after all.

Nothing is as it should be in this White House. Everyone working there has been compromised multiple times and now they all despise each other - and everyone except for Trump despises Trump. Because of all that, after just 120 days of the Trump administration, we are witness to an American tragedy for which there are five theoretical solutions.

The first is Trump's resignation, which won't happen. The second is that Republicans in the House and Senate support impeachment, which would be justified by the president's proven obstruction of justice, but won't happen because of the Republicans' thirst for power, which they won't willingly give up. The third possible solution is the invocation of the 25th Amendment, which would require the cabinet to declare Trump unfit to discharge the powers of the presidency. That isn't particularly likely either. Fourth: The Democrats get ready to fight and win back majorities in the House and Senate in midterm elections, which are 18 months away, before they then pursue option two, impeachment. Fifth: the international community wakes up and finds a way to circumvent the White House and free itself of its dependence on the U.S. Unlike the preceding four options, the fifth doesn't directly solve the Trump problem, but it is nevertheless necessary - and possible.

No Goals and No Strategy

Not quite two weeks ago, a number of experts and politicians focused on foreign policy met in Washington at the invitation of the Munich Security Conference. It wasn't difficult to sense the atmosphere of chaos and agony that has descended upon the city.

The U.S. elected a laughing stock to the presidency and has now made itself dependent on a joke of a man. The country is, as David Brooks wrote recently in the New York Times, dependent on a child. The Trump administration has no foreign policy because Trump has consistently promised American withdrawal while invoking America's strength. He has promised both no wars and more wars. He makes decisions according to his mood, with no strategic coherence or tactical logic. Moscow and Beijing are laughing at America. Elsewhere, people are worried.

In the Pacific, warships - American and Chinese - circle each other in close proximity. The conflict with North Korea is escalating. Who can be certain that Donald Trump won't risk nuclear war simply to save his own skin? Efforts to stop climate change are in trouble and many expect the U.S. to withdraw from the Paris Agreement because Trump is wary of legally binding measures. Crises, including those in Syria and Libya, are escalating, but no longer being discussed. And who should they be discussed with? Phone calls and emails to the U.S. State Department go unanswered. Nothing is regulated, nothing is stable and the trans-Atlantic relationship hardly exists anymore. German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel and Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Norbert Röttgen fly back and forth, but Germany and the U.S. no longer understand each other. Hardly any real communication takes place, there are no joint foreign policy goals and there is no strategy.

In "Game of Thrones," the Mad King was murdered (and the child that later took his place was no better). In real life, an immature boy sits on the throne of the most important country in the world. He could, at any time, issue a catastrophic order that would immediately be carried out. That is why the parents cannot afford to take their eyes off him even for a second. They cannot succumb to exhaustion because he is so taxing. They ultimately have to send him to his room - and return power to the grownups.

#16  A Ynet article not worth posting, but germane to this discussion:

Opposites Day: Merkel laughs with Obama hours before meeting Trump

Former US president Obama was in Berlin for panel discussion as Trump reached NATO summit in Brussels; German Chancellor Merkel was all smiles as she joined Obama on panel, 2 hours before she was obliged to deal with Trump, as he demanded Europeans pay off debts.

It should be noted that the panel discussion was part of is the Kirchentag, the biennial congress of the Lutheran Church in Germany, a subject Mr. Obama is remarkably incompetant to discuss. This year 140,000 of them are celebrating the 500th anniversay of the Reformation. Mr. Obama was scheduled for the panel a year ago.

#17  I don't know that Obama has anything to bring to their table, but IIRC the German Lutherans get their budget from the state--a religion tax (similarly for the Catholics, etc). You'd expect the result to be churches that care more about the fashions of the state than the faith of their flock, and I gather you'd be correct.

The concept of domesticated churches may appeal to him. Our pesky first amendment gets in the way, but we've already heard the opening salvos of "Why the first is a bad thing."

Suit against Hillary Clinton over Benghazi deaths and emails is dismissed
[Yahoo] Jackson dismissed the wrongful death portion of the suit on technical grounds after granting the State Department's motion to step in as the defendant on those claims. The Obama-appointed judge concluded Clinton used her email in the course of her official duties.

"The Court finds that Secretary Clinton was acting in the scope of her employment when she transmitted the emails that are alleged to give rise to her liability," Jackson wrote in her 29-page opinion. "The untimely death of plaintiffs’ sons is tragic, and the Court does not mean to minimize the unspeakable loss that plaintiffs have suffered in any way. But when one applies the appropriate legal standards, it is clear that plaintiffs have not alleged sufficient facts to rebut the presumption that Secretary Clinton was acting in her official capacity when she used her private email server."

Jackson cautioned that she was not opining on the appropriateness of Clinton's use of the private server or on whether what she said publicly about the Benghazi episode in its immediate aftermath.

"Nothing about this decision should be construed as making any determination or expressing any opinion about the propriety of the use of the private email server or the content or accuracy of the statements made by the Secretary to the family members or to anyone else in the days following the Benghazi attack," the judge wrote.

Jackson added that she was also not making a determination about whether Clinton's use of the private server was legal or not.

Britain
Student sentenced to 15 years for planting bomb on London tube
[Guardian] Damon Smith, 20, who has autism, had claimed he left bomb on busy London Jubilee line train as a prank.

A student with autism has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for planting a homemade bomb on a London underground train during morning rush hour.

Damon Smith, 20, constructed the rucksack bomb according to instructions in an online magazine linked to al-Qaida. Filled with ball-bearing shrapnel and using a £2 clock from Tesco as an improvised timer, the devise did not go off.

On Friday morning, he smiled in the dock at the Old Bailey in London as the judge, Richard Marks QC, sentenced him to 15 years in a young offender institution, with an extended period of five years on licence. Marks said although Smith had an interest in Islam, he was not motivated by terrorism.

Smith had pleaded guilty to perpetrating a bomb hoax, claiming he intended the device to work as a smoke bomb to stop the train “for a bit of fun”. But after a five-day trial, he was found guilty on 3 May of possession of an explosive substance with intent, contrary to the 1883 Explosive Substances Act.

Sentencing him, Marks said: “Quite what your motives were and what your true thinking was in acting as you did is difficult to discern with any degree of clarity or certainty.

“Whatever the position, the seriousness of what you did cannot be overstated, not least against the background of the fear in which we all live from the use of bombs here and around the world, an all too timely reminder of which were the events in Manchester earlier this week.”

Smith has Asperger syndrome and had a keen interest in weapons, which might have been connected to his condition, the jury was told during his trial. He was also interested in gambling and Islam, and had collected photos of extremists, including the ringleader of the 2015 Paris attacks.

He was 19 and studying forensic computing at London Metropolitan University when he left the rucksack containing the bomb on a Jubilee line train on the morning of 20 October 2016. Passengers discovered the device and alerted the driver, triggering a major security alert. Smith built the bomb after reading an article entitled How To Build a Bomb in the Kitchen of your Mum.

The jury heard that had the device worked, it would have detonated as people were being evacuated from North Greenwich tube station.

Smith was shot with an electronic stun gun and arrested near Holloway Road in north London the following day. Counter-terrorism officers who subsequently searched his former home in Newton Abbot, Devon, evacuated nearby houses after discovering another possible homemade bomb hidden in the attic.

A search of Smith’s home in Rotherhithe, south-east London, where he had moved with his mother after starting university, found a blank-firing, self-loading pistol and a BB gun, both bought legally, as well as a knuckleduster and a knife that he had showed off in an online video.

Police also found shredded paper with bombmaking instructions on them and a shopping list for “pressure cooker bomb materials” on an iPad he used. The note included a reminder to “keep this a secret between me and Allah #InspireTheBelievers”.

Smith’s barrister, Richard Carey-Hughes QC, said in mitigation that it was a tragic case for Smith and his mother. “This is a difficult climate to ask for mercy for someone convicted of this type of offence,” he said, referring to the suicide bombing at a concert in Manchester on Monday that killed 22 people.

“Nevertheless, we do so and we invite my lord to extend mercy. This case is different. It seems unique and so is this young man.”

In his defence, extracts of a psychiatric report were read out confirming an autism spectrum disorder. Smith had been interested in bombmaking since he was 10 and said it was “something to do when he was bored”.

On the first day of his trial, the judge asked the jury to disregard Smith’s smile as he listened to the prosecution outline the case against him. Smith was “acutely aware that he’s presenting himself in a manner that is odd and unsympathetic”, Carey-Hughes said. On the last full day of his trial, he declined to go into the witness box.

But Marks concluded that Smith was a dangerous offender, telling him: “I am influenced by your history of preoccupation with weapons and bombs, as well as by your condition, which makes it difficult for you to empathise with others and to understand and fully appreciate the very serious potential consequences of your actions, as this incident amply demonstrates.”

Fifth Column
U.S. Quietly Lifts Limit on Number of Refugees Allowed In
Or some State department head does, anyway. President Trump reportedly rises early to spend several hours each morning reading newspapers and watching televised news, so he should be aware of this by now, as we are.
[NYT] Despite repeated efforts by President Trump to curtail refugee resettlements, the State Department this week quietly lifted the department’s restriction on the number of refugees allowed to enter the United States.

The result could be a near doubling of refugees entering the country, from about 830 people a week in the first three weeks of this month to well over 1,500 people per week by next month, according to refugee advocates. Tens of thousands of refugees are waiting to come to the United States.

The State Department’s decision was conveyed in an email on Thursday to the private agencies in countries around the world that help refugees manage the nearly two-year application process needed to enter the United States.

In her email, Jennifer L. Smith, a department official, wrote that the refugee groups could begin bringing people to the United States “unconstrained by the weekly quotas that were in place.”

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Army shoots down armed Israeli drone which killed 3 soldiers
[ALMASDARNEWS] Around midnight, anti-aircraft units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shot down an armed Israeli drone which had conducted numerous sorties in Quneitra province, leading to the death of three SAA soldiers on Friday evening.
While staring at the pretty drone overhead, they accidentally fell into a drainage ditch and broke their silly necks.
The SAA troops were hit by the hostile drone while advancing behind enemy lines near the road between al-Hamdiyah and Abu Shabta, prompting the Syrian Air Defense Force to open fire and down the Israeli drone over rebel-held territory.
Oh -- not a ditch. They were shot by their own air defense, which almost entirely missed the drone. But if it weren't for the Israeli drone, the air defense guns would have stayed silent and the troops would still be alive. Thus it was that the Israeli drone killed them, you see?
Neither Tel Aviv or Damascus has responded to the mutual aggression yet. Nevertheless, the two countries remain at a state of war since the Israeli Armed Forces occupied much of the Golan Heights over five decades ago.
Israel never does, and if Damascus were to say anything they would find themselves in a war they alrady lost several times under considerably better conditions. At least they have the comfort of their manly mustaches. But wait -- there's more, per a last minute update from The Times of Israel at 12:10 a.m. EDT:
The Lebanese al-Miyadin network, which is affiliated with Shiite terrorist group Hezbollah, quoted on Saturday sources denying earlier reports of an Israeli Arclight airstrike on Syrian targets.

Syrian media had reported that three three soldiers loyal to Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
had been killed overnight Friday-Saturday in a strike by an unmanned Israeli aircraft.

Al-Miyadin, however, claimed that the soldiers were killed in battles with rebels near the town of al-Hamidiya, not by the Israeli military.

Zbigniew Brzezinski dead at 89
Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security advisor to former President Jimmy Carter, has died, according to an announcement from his daughter, MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski.

There was no word of the cause of death.

"He was known to his friends as Zbig, to his grandchildren as Chief and to his wife as the enduring love of her life," Mika wrote on Instagram.

Brzezinski served as President Carter's national security advisor from 1977 to 1981 and continued to hold influence in foreign policy issues. A registered Democrat once considered to be the answer to Republicans' favored Henry Kissinger, Brzezinski also served on former President Ronald Reagan's Chemical Warfare Commission and held other roles in the administration until 1989.

He was born in Warsaw, Poland, and became a naturalized US citizen in 1958.

The Grand Turk
Turkish security forces kill 29 Kurdish militants in clashes
DIYARBAKIR—Turkish security forces killed 29 Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants in an operation in a mountainous area of eastern Turkey's Agri and Van provinces, the Agri governor's office said on Friday.

Turkey's army said on Thursday three Turkish soldiers and a member of the state-sponsored village guard militia had been killed in the operation, launched in the Tendurek mountain area along the border of the two provinces, near the Iranian border.

A ceasefire between the Turkish state and the militants broke down in July 2015 and the southeast subsequently saw some of the worst violence since the PKK insurgency began in 1984.

More than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been killed in the conflict. The PKK is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.

[IsraelTimes] West Bank and Gazoo residents will be able to pray at Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque, travel abroad from Ben Gurion.

The measures, similar to those of previous years, were announced by Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT). Arabia
ANF recovers 1kg heroin from Abu Dhabi-bound passenger at Islamabad airport
[DAWN] The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) recovered one kilogramme of heroin from a passenger at the Benazir Bhutto
... 11th Prime Minister of Pakistain in two non-consecutive terms from 1988 until 1990 and 1993 until 1996. She was the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistain People's Party, who was murdered at the instigation of General Ayub Khan. She was murdered in her turn by person or persons unknown while campaigning in late 2007. Suspects include, to note just a few, Baitullah Mehsud, General Pervez Musharraf, the ISI, al-Qaeda in Pakistain, and her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, who shows remarkably little curiosity about who done her in...
International Airport, officials said Friday.

ANF officials said the passenger, Irfan Masih, was set to board an Airblue flight for Abu Dhabi on Thursday night when the drug was recovered from his handbag during checking at the immigration counter. Masih, who hails from Nankana Sahib, denied he had any knowledge about the presence of heroin in his bag.
The fact that he's a Christian makes me suspect he didn't.
The suspect was tossed in the slammer
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
and shifted to ANF headquarters. A First Information Report (FIR) was later registered against him under Section 9-C of the Control of Narcotics Substance Act.

According to officials, the suspect will be presented before a local magistrate on Saturday to seek his physical remand to hold an inquiry into where he was travelling to with the drugs.

The incident comes as several cases have emerged of narcotics being recovered from flights originating from Pakistain.

On May 22, some 20kg heroin was recovered from a London-bound Pakistain International Airlines (PIA) flight at Islamabad Airport.

A week earlier, British officials had found a "quantity of heroin" on the same flight, but in a different aircraft, after it landed at London's Heathrow Airport.

After the second heroin bust in a week, ANF officials have searched several planes for drugs before their departure from Pak airports.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Russian Air Force wipes out high-ranking Chechen ISIS warlord in eastern Homs
[ALMASDARNEWS] On Friday evening, Al-Masdar News was informed that the Islamic State had lost one its top military commanders in Syria due to a pinpoint Russian airstrike in eastern Homs.
[RING!]
"Operations duty officer!"
"Your Immensity, Lieutenant Kizhe speaking! I just emailed you the coordinates of Abu Omar Al-Shishani!"
"What? Abu Ayoub..."
"Abu Omar, Your Enormity! Abu Ayoub's already dead!"
"Very well, Kizhe! I'll order several tons of bombs dropped on Abu Omar! If he's under them, he'll be dead, too! The Tsar... um... the President Himself (Praise be His Name!) will take his shirt off to you!"
"Spasibo, Your Gross Tonnage! Hot dingies! Betcha I get an Order of Suvorov outta this!"

Abu Ayoub Al-Shishani, not to be confused with the late Abu Omar Al-Shishani,
Certainly not!
was killed by a Russian Sukhoi Su-34 bomber jet during the Islamic State’s large-scale withdrawal from central Homs on Thursday.
"Shh! Abu Omar! What's that sound?"
Abu Ayoub Al-Shishani, a man of Chechen origin who also fought the Russian Army back home, drew up the military plans for the first ISIS assault on Palmyra back in March 2016 which led to the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) retreating from the ancient city at the time.
"Aaaiiieee! I am undone, too!"
The now deceased ISIS commander was also involved in a number of battles in neighboring Iraq, specializing in desert warfare around the provinces of Anbar and Nineveh. His death
Which one? Abu Ayoub or Abu Omar? Or both?
represents a major blow to the caliphate’s forces which must now find a replacement if they are to fend off an expected eastern SAA thrust from Palmyra, ultimately looking to relieve the besieged city and airport of Deir Ezzor.
"REPLACEMENT NEEDED! Must be Chechen expert in desert warfare. Big red beard an added plus! Resume to Box 622, Raqqa"
Russian and Syrian warplanes have played an instrumental role in driving back ISIS from the Syrian desert. A rare video emerged on Friday showing airstrikes pounding a large Islamic State convoy which tried to retreat from the region without success.
Well done, guys. More please.

China-Japan-Koreas
Trump using Japan as foil to pressure North Korea and China: Scholar
[Iran Press TV] US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
is using Japan as a foil to pressure both North Korea and China with the threat of a military response that could result in a great tragedy, according to Professor Dennis Etler, an American political analyst who has a decades-long interest in international affairs.

Etler, a professor of Anthropology at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday while commenting on a statement of Trump about North Korea.

On Friday, Trump assured Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that the question of North Korea "will be solved," ahead of a G7 summit that will discuss a series of missile tests carried out by Pyongyang.

"We will be discussing many things including of course North Korea which is very much on our minds," Trump said in the Italian town of Taormina where he held a meeting with Abe at the start of the two-day G7 summit.

’US waged genocidal war against North Korea’

Etler said, "When it comes to tensions on the Korean peninsula both the US and Japan have been hoisted by their own petard. Ever since the beginning of the US initiated Cold War against the spread of Communism after WW2, the US has done everything in its power to push back against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (aka North Korea) in order to contain the People’s Republic of China."

"The US at first waged a genocidal war against North Korea in which it leveled the country and killed 20 percent of its population. When it met defeat at the hands of the Korean people and their Chinese allies it refused to sign a peace treaty and ever since has settled for an uneasy truce along the 38th parallel," he said.

"The US and its surrogates in South Korea and Japan have wanted to use the Korean Peninsula as a spearhead directed against China, as Imperial Japan did prior to and during WW2. The North having suffered immensely from the depredations of US imperialism is rightfully consumed with concern for its defenses against any renewed aggression directed against it by the powers that laid waste to it in the past," the analyst said.

#1  a professor of Anthropology at Cabrillo College

I am amazed at the number of colleges that are in the news these days I have never heard of before. Starting from when I followed College Bowl as a kid and college football ever since and looking for a school for myself and then my kids gave me a feeling that I had a fair vocabulary of such things.

But "professors" from all these weird schools of which I've never heard seem to warrant mention in publications world wide as experts in everything.

Strange.................................;^)

Former Navy SEAL to Katy Perry: ‘Hold One of Your Concerts in Syria and See How That Goes’
[BREITBART] Former Navy SEAL Carl Higbie urged pop singer Katy Perry to try holding a concert in Syria if she wants to "hug it out" with Islamic terrorists.

Higbie, appearing as a guest on Fox News Thursday, said, "Go to hell, Katy Perry. Hold one of your concerts in Syria and see how that goes."

The ex-Navy SEAL was responding to Perry’s recent interview Tuesday on the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show in which the singer made a plea for people to "co-exist" and to remove "barriers" and "borders" after the Manchester, U.K. Islamic terrorist attack that took the lives of at least 22 people, many of them children, and maimed at least 59 more.

This Week in Guns, May 27th, 2017

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Next week I'll do the quarterly ammunition price reports. Without peeking, my guess is that ammunition, like AR-15 have been on a steady decline since the first of the year.

The damned fools on our side of the line will crow about the Trump Effect or similar nonsense, when in fact gun rights are in greater danger than ever before.

For example, David Cordrea reports that even more firearms restrictions are being pushed in the New York legislature, which would require all fire arms to have heavy triggers to prevent children under the age of five from firing pistols. Cordrea suggests the new trigger requirement will make such firearms more, not less dangerous because the greater amount of force used in pulling the trigger will cause greater difficulty in firing the gun accurately.

On the plus side, two gun control bills were stopped before they reached the floor of the Nevada legislature. That is a score, but a brief one. Sooner or later the bastards will be back and they will win unless gun rights nationwide are greatly expanded.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Pistol ammunition prices were steady. Rifle ammunition prices were mixed.

Prices for used pistols were mixed. Prices for used rifles were mostly higher.

The nationwide average price for a used AR-15 pattern semiautomatic has dropped to yet another historic low at $445, the second drop in two weeks. The decline continues the trend begun in March, 2017.

Syrian Kurdish fighters attack Turkish military near Afrin
[ALMASDARNEWS] Predominately Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) on Thursday shelled a Turkish army base near Afrin district northwest of Aleppo, military sources reported.

“In response to the Turkish aggression against our people in Afrin, the YPG targeted headquarters of Turkey’s military with heavy artillery,” ARA News cites a YPG spokesman.

At least one Turkish soldier was killed and several others wounded in the bombardment.

“The clashes continued between the YPG and Turkish troops over the past few days after the latter entered Afrin countryside in a bid to hit YPG-held villages,” the Kurdish official said.

This comes just one day after three Kurdish fighters lost their lives when the Turkish army hit a YPG security office in the Jinderis area of Afrin district, northwest of Aleppo.

Manchester and the Lies We Tell Ourselves About Terrorism
[Ricochet] The choices Europe faces today are stark. They can either engage in acts of collective punishment, up to and including mass deportations and strict controls on the nature of Islam that is allowed to be practiced or they can face a dark future of terrorism and the slow erosion of their way of life. There are no easy solutions or solutions that don’t involve ugly actions and consequences.

America does not yet face these choices. Our Muslim population is too small and our country and population too large to force us to make the kinds of choices the nations of Europe are being forced to make. If, however, we continue to allow mass immigration and allow the America Muslim population to reach a critical mass, we will face the same choices Europe is facing now. That is not something people want to hear. It is much easier to tell ourselves lies about how we can keep calm and carry on and it will all go away if we just are understanding enough. Sadly, the longer we cling to these illusions the worse our choices will be when reality finally forces us to give up these illusions.

North Korea official blasts UN’s refusal to weigh alternatives to sanctions
[SCMP] North Korea pushed back against United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
Security Council resolutions meant to restrict the country’s trade and international financial ties, accusing Secretary-General António Guterres of ignoring multiple requests from Pyongyang to consider countermeasures.

Guterres has declined to respond to multiple requests from North Korea’s UN delegation to convene an "international forum of legal experts" to discuss the legal justification for UN sanctions implemented and tightened in recent years, most recently in November 2016, Kim In-ryong, North Korea’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, told news hounds.

The Security Council’s resolutions are meant to stop Pyongyang’s nuclear detonations and ballistic missile tests, a programme analysts say is meant to develop nuclear weapons. The body has issued a series of resolutions since 2006, after six-nation talks involving North Korea, China, the US, Japan, South Korea and Russia broke down.

Kim’s delegation has also sent multiple petitions to the UN Security Council seeking an emergency meeting to discuss joint military exercises conducted by the US and South Korea.

’s days in central Syria appear to be numbered as the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) captured some 3,000 square kilometers in barely 48 hours, thus reconnecting all roads between the ancient cities of Palmyra and Damascus.

Below, the SAA can be seen liberating the desert town of al-Buseerah, located southwest of Palmyra. The footage was released by the official SAA media wing:

With large ISIS convoys retreating from the Homs region en route to Raqqa upon word of SAA advances, these jihadist vehicles were hunted down by Syrian and Russian warplanes with the entire ordeal recorded on camera.

ISIS is now gearing up for the looming battle of Raqqa while the SAA seems keen to grab poorly defended jihadist territory in the rest of Homs province.

" (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIS) in Leb was killed on Friday as a result of counter-terrorist operation of Lebanese Army in Arsal.
Particularly gory picture at link.
As paradoxic as it might sound, death of Bilal al-Baridi, the aforementioned IS commander, comes as a failure of the raid, and not a success.

Start of the operation was promising as Lebanese military stormed Baridi’s house and managed to capture him alive. Consequently, he was taken by a car to a military base in Beqaa province for questioning.

This is where the operation went wrong. Being on its way to destination, Army convoy was attacked by IS jihadists on two vehicles. In the ensued firefight, Lebanese soldiers killed a driver of one of the vehicles, while also captured two other holy warriors, after they had surrendered.

Taking advantage of the turmoil, Baridi managed to pull a hand grenade from one of the soldiers’ vest and detonated it instantly killing himself and injuring 6 soldiers as a result.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Texas Teacher Awards 7th Grader "Most Likely To Become A Terrorist" Award - School Suspends Teacher
The child is probably sweet and loving, so the award was obviously, to the teacher, utterly silly. And so she expected the bright students in her class to understand, instead of noticing that bright early teens are not as a group noted for their social awareness.
[DallasNews] A Houston-area school is apologizing after a seventh-grade student was given an award that named her "most likely to become a terrorist."

The student got the certificate during a mock awards ceremony, which followed the official awards ceremony at Anthony Aguirre Junior High, the school said in a prepared statement.

"As principal, I want to assure all students, parents and community members that these award statements and ideals are NOT representative of the Aguirre Vision Mission, and educational goals for its students," the statement said.

Lizeth Villanueva told that she was given the award Tuesday in her AVID class, an advanced learning program to prepare students for college.

Her mother, Ena Hernandez, was furious and said her daughter was hurt by the award.

"When she first showed me the paper, I'm like, 'What is this?' I read it again, and I'm like, 'What is this?' That's when my daughter told me it was supposed to be a joke," Hernandez told the station. "It doesn't look like a joke to me."

Lizeth said the teacher meant the awards to be funny and gave out others but added that "it might hurt [students'] feelings," the station reported.

"It was not a joke," Lizeth said. "I do not feel comfortable with this. ... I do not feel comfortable being in the same classroom with" the teacher.

The school principal also apologized in person for the mock awards, and the district, Channelview ISD, said the teachers involved have been disciplined. The district did not release the teacher's name, however, Lizeth told the station the teacher was suspended. Her mother said she doesn't think suspension is enough.

"Get fired, at least, or something," she told KHOU-TV.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Over 98% of All WannaCry Victims Were Using Windows 7
And 100 percent of them were using the most insecure network disk sharing protocol on the planet, Server Mount Block Protocol AKA Common Internet File System (CIFS) Protocol
[BLEEPINGCOMPUTER] Numbers released by Kaspersky Lab on Friday reveal that over 98% of all documented WannaCry infections were running versions of the Windows 7 operating system.

Out of all Windows 7 users, the worst hit were users running Windows 7 64-bit edition, accounting for more than 60% of all infections.

The second and third most targeted OS versions were Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows 10, respectively.

So! XP wasn't to blame after all
The statistics come to disprove popular belief that WannaCry hit mostly Windows XP machines. "The Windows XP count is insignificant," said Costin Raiu, director of Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab.

To infect all these computers, the WannaCry ransomware used an SMB worm that spread on its own to new computers that ran vulnerable SMB services.

That SMB worm was powered by an exploit named ETERNALBLUE. The exploit is part of a collection of hacking tools a group of hackers calling themselves The Shadow Brokers have stolen from the NSA and leaked online in April 2017.

Tillerson rejects hosting Ramadan event at US State Dept.
Message sent. In all directions.
[Iran Press TV] US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has turned down a request to hold a Ramadan event at his department, breaking with a 20-year-old tradition observed by both Democrats and Republicans, according to a new report.

Apparently, the top US diplomat was asked by the State Department's Office of Religion and Global Affairs to host a reception for Eid al-Fitr day, on which Moslems celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Rooters reported Friday.

All US state secretaries have hosted Ramadan events at the department since 1999, the year then-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright held the first event.

A department front man said a Ramadan event was still possible in future.

"We are still exploring possible options for observance of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the month of Ramadan. US ambassadors are encouraged to celebrate Ramadan through a variety of activities, which are held annually at missions around the world," he told Rooters.

#4  Lets see if we can help you with that ignorance part of your meme. The Church of England during the British rule of the colonies was a mandatory worship requirement and enforced moral code. The Constitution eliminated the ability of a church to establish laws for the people, which by the way Sharia Law is exactly what the Constitution forbids. Theocracy by Imams (aka preachers).

During the first 200 years the vast majority of people were pious Christians that built this great nation out of the wilderness and were allowed to practice their faith freely outside the walls of government institutions (therefore Ramadan will NOT be officially hosted within the walls of the State Department). Since the original citizens of 200 years were Christian, the halls were vacant so federal holidays were established on days no one would be around.

When the Mohammedans conquer the ignorant not only will mandatory religion be in place, but if you do not adhere your head will be severed from your torso by explicit decree of the Imams.

Sri Lankan peacekeepers stand accused of running child sex ring in Haiti -- yet the UN took no action
[SCMP] When a Haitian teenager alleged that she had been raped and sodomised by a Sri Lankan peacekeeper, the Sri Lankan government here dispatched a high-ranking general suspected of war crimes to lead the investigation.

He didn’t interview the accuser or medical staff who examined her, but he cleared the peacekeeper ‐ who remained in the Sri Lankan military.

"A suspected war criminal is the wrong person to conduct an investigation into alleged crimes committed by a peacekeeper," said Andreas Schuller of the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights, a Berlin-based group that helped launch the complaint.

It wasn’t the first time that accusations against Sri Lankan peacekeepers were swept aside. In 2007, a group of orphaned Haitian children identified 134 Sri Lankans who gave them food for sex in a child sex ring that went on for three years, an News Agency that Dare Not be Named investigation found.

In that case, which was corroborated by UN Sherlocks, the Sri Lankan military repatriated 114 of the peacekeepers, but none was ever tossed in the calaboose

(ISIS) hard boyz in the area, a military source told al-Masdar News on Thursday.

According to the source, the Syrian Arab Army’s elite 4th Mechanized Division, alongside the 5th Corps and Russian Marines, is preparing to start its military operation to liberate the eastern countryside of the al-Salamiyah District, which has been under the Islamic State’s control for more than two years.

Among the many targets for the Syrian and Russian forces in eastern Hama will be ’Aqayrbat; this rural town is considered the Islamic State’s main stronghold in the province and it is centrally located along the terrorist group’s main supply route from rural Homs to the al-Raqqa Governorate.

If the Syrian Arab Army is successful in taking control of ’Aqayrbat and its nearby villages, then they will be in position to close the Islamic State’s important east Hama pocket.

The statement came three days after the Al Khalifah regime launched a full-scale military raid on the northwestern village of Diraz, situated some 12 kilometers west of the capital Manama, to suppress a growing protest staged in solidarity with the top holy man, Sheikh Isa Qassim, the spiritual leader of Bahrain's Shia majority.

Youhanabad lynching case: Prosecutor found guilty of proselytising bid
[DAWN] LAHORE: The prosecutor, who was blamed for asking the undertrial Christian accused of the Youhanabad lynching case to embrace Islam for getting released on bail, has been found guilty of the charge in an inquiry started against him under PEEDA (Punjab Employees Efficiency and Discipline Act).

Prosecutor Syed Anees Shah had allegedly asked the 42 undertrial Christians to embrace Islam after the hearing of the case of lynching of two Moslem men on March 28 this year.

The lynching took place in the aftermath of two suicide kabooms outside two churches in Lahore’s Christian colony Youhanabad.

The incident had taken place in March 2015 and the case is being tried by a Lahore anti-terrorism court.

"It is my recommendation, the final decision would be made by the competent authority," said Prosecution Department’s Director General Monitoring and Evaluation Ashraf Bhatti who was the inquiry officer, confirming on telephone that the prosecutor had been found guilty.

Mr Shah was removed from his post immediately after the allegation was levelled against him. An inquiry was ordered under PEEDA. Punishment under this law is given by the competent authority after hearing an accused.

Officials said under the law, the hearing by the competent authority is held to impose punishment on the basis of the findings of an inquiry.

They rejected the idea that conversion to Islam could benefit any accused in any case being tried by any anti-terrorism or normal court. "No law enforced in Pakistain provides for it," a senior prosecutor said.

Two suicide kabooms outside two churches in Youhanabad on March 15, 2015, had sparked off violent protests in the Christian locality. As a result two Moslem men, happened to be in the locality, were burnt to death by the angry mob.

The victims were identified as Babar Noman, a tailor, and Hafiz Naeem, a glass cutter, of the same locality. Later, the Nishtar Town police registered two FIRs against the accused.

All the 42 accused of the lynching, all in jail, were indicted by the ATC on Jan 10 this year.

Five dead after gun battle in Garhi Dewan
[DAWN] Five people bit the dust, including two children that gave up the ghost on Friday, as a result of bullet injuries sustained during a heavy exchange of fire between two groups over the petty issue of children’s fight in Garhi Dewan village near Larkana on May 25.

The injured were taken to Chandka Medical College Hospital where on Friday, according to hospital sources, 11-year-old Babar and 10-year-old Kainat died.

Earlier three persons identified as Munawwar Ali Odho, Sherma, 70, and Amjad, 14 were killed in the fight, while five others were maimed.

The atmosphere was tense in the village after the incident as heavy police contingents were deployed in the area to avert further loss of lives.

Armed men of the warring sides took positions in their respective areas.

MQM-P’s ‘missing’ worker found shot dead
[DAWN] KARACHI: A ’missing’ worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistain has been found rubbed out, according to party leaders.

Furqan Iqbal was found dead with two bullet wounds on the upper torso of his body on Wednesday. His body was found on a road off Super Highway near a village within the jurisdiction of Memon Goth cop shoppe.

"The victim was an officer-bearer of the MQM-P and lived in Gulshan-e-Iqbal," said party chief Dr Farooq Sattar.

Speaking at a presser at party’s temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad on Thursday, he claimed Iqbal was killed in ’custody’ and said such killings must be stopped.

Dr Sattar said over 150 workers of the party were missing and demanded their release.

He alleged that Iqbal was taken away by ’personnel’ in plain clothes. After his ’arrest,’ a petition was filed in the Sindh High Court, which was pending when he was killed after ’illegal detention’ of 14 days, he added.

China police arrest 44 in $140 million online scam
[DAWN] China's police have placed in durance vile
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
44 people over a scam which saw many as 93,000 people contribute start-up capital to "unfreeze" assets smuggled overseas when the Nationalist government was tossed in 1949, police authorities said late on Thursday.

The criminal network used Wechat and other communication tools to encourage people to pay 10 yuan ($1.46) for membership in a scheme which promised returns of as much as 50,000 yuan ($7,280) once the assets were unfrozen, the Ministry of Public Security said in a notice on its website.

The ministry said that it had busted a total of 15 criminal groups involved in the scam since investigations began in October 2016. The fraud involved more than 950 million yuan ($138.34 million).

The public security ministry said earlier this month that it had already set up 32 provincial and 206 city centers dedicated to cracking down on online and telecom fraud. It said it uncovered 83,000 cases last year, up 49.6 percent compared to 2016.

Pakistan's ‘war on terror’ cost down 40pc to $3.9bn
What they used to call "Economies of Scale."
[DAWN] Pakistain has cut direct and indirect losses to its economy on account of terrorism by slightly above 40 per cent to $3.88 billion (Rs407.21bn) in the first nine months of this fiscal year.

Economic Survey 2016-17 attributes this to an improving security condition in the wake of ongoing military-led counterterrorism operations in the nation’s tribal regions and elsewhere.

The latest survey, which has recorded the losses to the national economy under the chapter ’Impact of War in Afghanistan and Ensuing Terrorism on Pakistain’s Economy’, shows that the losses to the economy are steadily decreasing since FY12 when they hit a peak of $23.77bn the year before. Last year, the economic losses due to deterioration in the security conditions on account of terrorism went down by about 30pc to $6.49bn from $9.24bn a year earlier.

The cumulative losses to the economy on account of terrorism in the country since it joined the global ’war on terror’ in the aftermath of terrorist attacks on the American soil in September 2001 have been estimated by the government at $123.13bn.

The reduction in the losses to the economy, the survey contends, reflects the effectiveness of the government’s efforts to "eliminate terrorism and extremism from the country".

'Unprovoked' Indian shelling kills woman in AJK's Bhimber district
[DAWN] A woman was killed in Azad Jammu and Kashmire (AJK) during the early hours of Friday in what officials said is the latest ceasefire violation by Indian troops.

Farzand Begum, 60, wife of Noor Hussain, perished when a shell landed on her house and went kaboom!.

The woman was a resident of Naali village in Bhimber district, Deputy Commissioner Chaudhry Guftaar said.

Naali village, which falls in tehsil Barnala, is adjacent to the Samahni sector, which has been hit frequently by Indian troops in the recent past.

Shelling began in the area at around 3am, and the casualty occurred between 4 and 5am, Additional Station House Officer Hanif Ali said.

He added that since mobile phones do not work in the hilly area, they had sent a constable to ascertain details.

With the latest fatality, the number of killings in cross-border firing incidents in the ongoing month has risen to three on the Pak side, while at least 30 others have been injured.

Islamic State suffers heavy casualties in counter-offensive north of Raqqa
[ALMASDARNEWS] In a last-ditch effort to stall the looming battle of Raqqa, ISIS militants launched a counter-attack on the Kurdish-held village of Maisalun some 10 kilometers north of Raqqa.

With 48 hours of clashes finally coming to end on Friday morning, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were able to repel the jihadist assault and retake lost positions inside the frontier village.

According to a local source, some 20 ISIS insurgent were killed in the Maisalun skirmishes while an three more ISIS members were burned alive after the SDF blew up a nearby ammunition warehouse. In addition, an ISIS fighter was taken captive and blindfolded.
"Aaaiiieee! Make him stop! I confess! I killed Jon Benet!"
Meanwhile, the SDF captured most of the Baath dam west of Raqqa amid dozens of US airstrikes on ISIS-held positions at the river facility. The advance concluded minutes ago, thus eliminating an ISIS pocket north of the Euphrates River.

Meanwhile, Kurdish forward units are merely three kilometers from Raqqa city’s gates and have fire control over its eastern neighborhood where an Islamic State flag is clearly visible.

US-led Syria strike kills scores of relatives of IS fighters
Unfortunately, it's the kind of thing that can be expected when one is deployed as a human shield.
[AlAhram] Dozens of relatives of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) holy warriors were killed on Friday in new US-led strikes on Syria, just hours after the UN urged nations striking them to protect civilians.

Bombing raids by the US-led coalition have pounded IS positions across Iraq and Syria since IS grabbed credit for the devastating bombing of a concert in Manchester on Monday.

Scores of civilians, many of them families of IS members, have been killed in bombing raids in recent days on the eastern Syrian town of Mayadeen, held by IS since 2014.

Early Friday, at least 80 relatives of IS fighters were killed in US-led coalition bombardment, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The toll includes 33 children. They were families seeking refuge in the town's municipal building," said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman.

"This is the highest toll for relatives of IS members in Syria," he told AFP.

Coalition strikes on the town killed 37 civilians on Thursday night after 15 had been killed on Wednesday, according to the Britannia-based Observatory.

The US military on Friday confirmed that it had struck "near Mayadeen" on May 25 and 26, but said it was "still assessing the results of those strikes", according to Pentagon front man Eric Pahon.

The US military insists that it takes every precaution to avoid hitting civilians, but the United Nations
...a lucrative dumping ground for the relatives of dictators and party hacks...
on Friday urged parties bombing IS to do more.

UN human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said "all states" whose air forces are active in the anti-IS missions needed "to take much greater care to distinguish between legitimate military targets and civilians".

The Observatory gathered its information from civilian and medical sources on the ground in IS-held Mayadeen.

The town has seen an influx of displaced families from IS-held territory in Iraq and Syria, including its bastion Raqa.

It is in Syria's oil-rich east near the border with Iraq -- a region considered a prize by many of IS's enemies including the Syrian army.

Sisi says Egypt has carried out airstrike on terror camps; sources confirm location is Libya
[AlAhram] Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said in a televised speech following the terrorist attack on Christians in Minya on Friday morning, that an Arclight airstrike against a terrorist training camp was being carried out as he spoke.

He added that "Egypt will not hesitate in striking any camps that harbour or train terrorist elements whether inside Egypt or outside Egypt," adding that Friday's attack, which saw 28 Copts killed by armed gunnies, will not pass easily.

El-Sisi said that a strike was being launched targeting a camp that had been a source of holy warriors who had carried out attacks in Egypt, without specifying the location.

The Egyptian armed forces released a short video which was shown on state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
after El-Sisi's speech. The voiceover said that upon the directions of the president, the airforce had carried out a strike against terrorist gatherings in Libya "after confirming their involvement in planning and committing the terrorist attack in Minya governorate on Friday."

The strike is still ongoing, the army video said.

Senior sources had earlier told MENA agency that the strike mentioned by the president targeted terrorist Death Eater group camps in Darna, eastern Libya.

El-Sisi directly addressed the American president Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, saying: "Your Excellency, I trust your ability to wage war on terrorism as your first priority, with the cooperation of the whole international community, that should unite against terrorism."

He added that "all countries that support terrorism, should be punished, without any courtesy or conciliation."

"If Egypt falls, the whole world will be in chaos," he said. "We are waging a war on behalf of the world."

The president stressed the huge efforts that have been taken to fight terrorism. He said that Egypt had destroyed 300 vehicles trying to cross the border from Libya while bringing "evil" over the past two months.
The Times of Israel says the jihadi training camp belongs to ISIS, though without citing any evidence. Ynet adds:
Egyptian air force planes on Friday carried out six strikes directed at camps near Derna in Libya where Cairo believes holy warriors responsible for a deadly attack on Coptic Christians earlier in the day were trained, Egyptian military sources said.
Update from Deutsche Welle at 9:50 a.m. EDT:
East Libyan forces said in a statement later that they participated in the Arclight airstrikes, adding they al-Qaeda-linked sites had been targeted.

Security officials quoted witnesses as saying they saw eight to 10 attackers in military uniforms and masks.

Christians account for more than 35 percent of the population in Minya, the highest level of any Egyptian province.

chapter, Moslem Khan, who was sentenced to death last year by a military court on multiple charges of terrorism.

The PHC bench comprising Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Ijaz Anwer issued the order after a preliminary hearing of a petition filed by Nida Bibi, wife of Khan, challenging the conviction of her husband by the military court.

The bench issued notices to the ministries of defence and interior directing them to submit the record of the case and fixed June 1 for the next hearing.

Advocate Tariq Asad, representing the petitioner, put forward different objections to the trial of Khan under the Army Act.

He said that Khan was taken into custody by security forces in Sept 2009 after which nothing was known about him. Finally, his family came to know about his conviction through newspapers in Dec 2016.

The counsel said that the family had not been provided record of the trial proceedings and it was not known under what charges Khan had been convicted. They submitted an application to the military court of appeal seeking details of the trial proceedings, but no reply was given to them.

He said that Khan was not provided a counsel of his own choice and was denied fair trial as provided under article 10-A of the Constitution.

The counsel said that the convict had remained in jug of security forces for seven years and it was not known under what conditions he had been kept.

Apparently the proceedings of the military court were one-sided, he argued.

The Inter-Services Public relations (ISPR), the media wing of the army, had on Dec 28, 2016 announced the conviction of Khan by a military court. The ISPR had claimed that he was involved in the killing of innocent civilians and attacks on armed forces and law enforcement agencies, which had resulted in death of 31 people, including Inspector Sher Ali, and injuries to 69 others.

It claimed that Khan was also involved in the slaughtering of four army officials -- Captain Najam Riaz Raja, Captain Junaid Khan, Naik Shahid Rasool and Lance Naik Shakeel Ahmed. Furthermore, he was involved in the kidnapping of two Chinese engineers and a local civilian for ransom.

The ISPR had said that Khan had admitted to his offences before the magistrate and the trial court.

China-Japan-Koreas
The unintended consequences of China's one-child policy.
[AURORA.DAWN] In a country like ours where overpopulation is as rampant as jalebi, truck art and shaadi halls, there are many who may admire China’s stringent one-child policy. A month ago, I counted myself among them... and then Y&R flew me out to Shanghai for a strategy workshop, where I discovered the strange-but-true fact of the matter: Being a young person in China is like being part of a sociological experiment gone terribly wrong.

Oh brother, where art thou?
Imagine if you will a world where the words ’brother’ and ’sister’ don’t exist. Sounds like something out of Twilight Zone, but it is a reality for most young urban Chinese. China instituted its one-child policy in 1979 to bring its overpopulation under control. Arriving in Shanghai, I had heard of the policy, but like most people, I had not considered what it meant.

There are many stereotypes about only children. They like to be the centre of attention, they are lonely, they are maladjusted and they are spoiled brats. Picture an entire generation of kids growing up this way. There is a term for this: The Little Emperor Syndrome. As Jane Macartney (China correspondent of NYT) put it:

"Ice-creams and piano lessons, designer sneakers and a flat of their own: these are some of the extras that China’s only children receive from their doting families. The one-child policy has created a generation of little emperors."

I met and befriended one such emperor on the streets of Shanghai, a fascinating young programmer named Lee. On my last evening in Shanghai, we were leaving the Westin Hotel when Lee decided to jump on the grand piano and start playing. He told me how his parents made him learn the piano and the violin when he was young. Studies suggest that only children face more pressure from their parents. But in a country full of emperor children, this pressure too has its own term: ’4-2-1’. Four grandparents, two parents and one child that will one day have to support them. Oh, and speaking of pressure and math that doesn’t add up...

25 vs. 27
Imagine if you will a world in which 25% of adult men may never get married. Welcome to China in the year 2020, by which time, it is estimated there will be 30-35 million more adult men than women... that’s an army of single men equal to the current population of Canada! It’s due to a lethal combination of hundreds of years of gender discrimination, exacerbated by the one-child policy and increased access to ultrasounds and abortions (allowing couples to abort if it’s a girl). What sad irony that all this preferential treatment for boys has actually led to this perfect storm of lonely men, the vast majority of them being poor.

What about the women? With so many eligible men, they must have it made, right? Not quite. Young, successful women in China are increasingly under threat because if they don’t get married by 27, the Chinese government labels them as sheng nu or ’leftover women’. Twenty-nine-year-old Huang Yuanyuan sums up this dilemma best.

"A-quality guys will find B-quality women, B-quality guys will find C-quality women, and C-quality men will find D-quality women."

So as Chinese men ’marry down’ in age and education, "The people left are A-quality women and D-quality men." It’s these A-quality women who get their Master’s and pursue careers who are under immense pressure to find a husband. Pressure laid on them by family, friends and yes, the Chinese government.

What will become of the emperor children?
Dating show contestant Ma Nuo proclaimed in 2010, "I would rather cry in the back of a BMW, than laugh on the back of a bicycle."

Most Chinese women look for successful men. The army of poor, lonely men continues to grow, as do successful ’leftover women’. What will become of these emperor children? Time will tell as China’s bold sociological experiment continues to unfold.

ISIS claims suicide attack on Jakarta bus station
[IsraelTimes] Three coppers killed Wednesday in ongoing terror surge in world’s most populous Moslem-majority state.

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) terror group has grabbed credit for a twin suicide kaboom at a Jakarta bus terminal that killed three coppers, the latest attack to hit Indonesia as it faces a surge in terror plots.

Analysts described the claim as credible and said they believed Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a local network of IS-linked bully boys, carried out the bombing.

Two jacket wallahs attacked the busy terminal in the capital late Wednesday in a dramatic assault that sparked panic and left human body parts and shattered glass strewn across the street.

Three coppers were killed, and five other officers and five civilians injured in the bombing at the Kampung Melayu terminal. Authorities Thursday raided the houses of the suspected bombers, and found Islamic teaching materials and bladed weapons.

IS propaganda agency Amaq said late Thursday that the "attack on the Indonesian police gathering in the city of Jakarta was carried out by one of the fighters of the Islamic State," in a statement carried by the SITE Intelligence Group.

Jakarta-based security analyst Sidney Jones, who heads the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict think tank, described the claim as "very credible." She said she believed that the branch of JAD based in Bandung, a city on the main island of Java, had carried out the bombing.

Al Chaidar, a terrorism expert from the University of Malikussaleh in Indonesia’s Aceh province, said he also thought the claim credible.

JAD was designated a terrorist organization by the United States in January, which said the network was an umbrella group for about two dozen bully boy outfits.

Some have pointed the finger at the group for carrying out a suicide and gun attack in Jakarta in January last year that left four assailants and four civilians dead, and was also claimed by IS.

Bangladesh
More is at stake than a statue
[Dhaka Tribune] Before we get into a debate over the difference between an idol and a sculpture, the fundamentalists among us should be asked whether they acknowledge and recognise the Supreme Court in the first place.
My guess is that they'd demand shariah.
Indeed several Islamist attacks have been directed against courts and judges precisely because the holy men said judges and courts uphold and represent an un-Islamic dispensation, if not a godless one.
Um... The symbolism of Lady Justice is that she's blindfolded -- meaning she's neutral. She holds scales to weigh evidence. She holds a sword, representing the power of the state. She's not a goddess, as the camel's nose Islamists insist, she's an allegory. Ptui.
The Supreme Court, where Lady Justice stands with her scales, is dedicated to upholding the constitution of Bangladesh. This constitution, in true democratic spirit, upholds and embraces the illusory sovereignty of the citizen. It is the citizen who is the source of all power.
Not too long ago -- I'm too lazy to look it up, but we had it here -- Bangla officially disavowed secularism, regarding itself as Islamic.
This philosophy directly contradicts with that of the Islamist parties, and hence the conflict between a democratic system and one prescribed by Islamists.
Having disavowed secularism they're now inching their way toward caving in to the plausibly deniably Pak-affiliated Islamic bastards that opposed the establishment of Bangladesh in the first place.
However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
when holy men talk about Lady Justice and not the iconic Aparajeyo Bangla or any of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s busts, it can only be presumed that they attach more significance to this statue than the others.
Or that they haven't come for the others yet.
Now, if they do not even recognise an institution then they cannot comment on it. If Bangladesh does not recognise a country, then our government cannot urge that government to behave responsibly. But such reasoning can only be expected to work with a reasonable and rational quarter, which the Islamists have shown little evidence of being.
Rationality is a western construct, not applicable to proper Third Worlders.
Soon after getting an assurance from the prime minister that Lady Justice would be removed, the holy mens were out with the demand of removing all statues.
Including the representations of gods of the native Hindoo population.
One cannot presume any longer that the prime minister was just trying to placate a room full of holy men when she assured them of having a word about the sword wielding, scale bearing Banglicised Lady Justice.
I guess placating is just another word for caving in, unless she shares the same stupid beliefs.
But the mullahs then demanded removal of all statues.
... and the suppression of the Hindoo minority, and any Jains or Buddhists or Bacchantes inhabiting the country. And Shiites and Ahmadis, even though they're not big on statuary.
That would include all statues and sculptures like Aparajeyo Bangla, Raju Bhashkorjo, and the hundreds of busts of the prime minister’s father, not to mention the millions of idols of deities that are worshipped around the country.
That's what I just said.
This is a perfect example of why one should not relent to communal pressures, no matter how insignificant they might seem.
The neutrality represented by the blindfold and the scales is an aspect of secularism.
And as regards the debate of whether it is an idol or a statue, it is pointless.
The gods can be regarded as allegories. Is there an actual Lady Lakshmi inhabiting some ethereal abode? Or is Lady Luck a concept? Having been her plaything a few times in the past seventy years, I lean toward the latter interpretation.
Those saying it is not an idol but a sculpture are treading a very dangerous path. Even agreeing to take up such a line of argument would suggest one is worse or better than the other.
I'd say that those who regard Lady Justice as a goddess are the ones treading the dangerous path, one leading toward ignorance and superstition. The professionally indignant are continually treading that same path, whether the offending statue be Lady Justice or Lady Lakshmi or the late Robert E. Lee.
There is the suggestion that perhaps it would have been OK for the holy men to make the demand if this were an idol that people worship. It is not.
I've never seen anyone bow down to the location of Lady Justice, nor even bring her flowers. She is the Roman goddess Iustitia. She remains a poor, often violated allegorical goddess. There are a few people who worship her, a lot more who prefer to have her forbidden, banished, arrested in some Gethsemane and crucified on some Golgotha because having her strong and healthy would be dangerous to their grasp for power.
So what if this is the Roman goddess of justice? It is this concept of justice being blindfolded that we have embraced. Bengali, Buddhist, agnostic, bigot or buffoon, Lady Justice doesn’t see the difference.
Only clerics and the professionally indignant do. Dhaka is no different from New Orleans in that respect.
She has her scales to test the strength of one’s argument and evidence against another, and she has her sword to deliver swift justice. Removal of the statue of Lady Justice now, will threaten the idols and statues everywhere forever.
... and with them tolerance and rationality. And, of course, justice.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Hundreds of Palestinian protest across West Bank, Gaza
It's the Friday before Ramadan starts, and boys will be idiots.
[IsraelTimes] Masked teens throw rocks, roll burning tires at IDF troops, who respond with rubber bullets, tear gas; one soldier lightly maimed.

Hundreds of Paleostinians took part in violent protests against Israeli troops across the West Bank and Gazoo on Friday, in support of a hunger strike by security prisoners.

Over all, 18 Paleostinian rioters were said to be injured in the festivities with IDF soldiers. One Israeli serviceman was also lightly maimed, the army said.

Paleostinian youths have been taking part in occasionally violent protests against Israeli troops on an almost daily basis, as the hunger strike enters its fifth week. Friday evening will also mark the beginning of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, a period which has historically seen an increase of tensions in the region.

In Jericho, dozens of Paleostinians attacked Israeli troops with rocks and burning tires. One soldier was lightly injured by a rock that was thrown at him. He was taken to receive medical care, the army said.

In Beita, outside Nablus, hundreds of young Paleostinians threw rocks and rolled burning tires at Israeli troops, who responded with rubber-coated bullets, tear gas and stun grenades, an army spokesperson said.

According to the Paleostinian Maan news agency, one person was injured from gunfire during the protest and 11 more were lightly maimed from tear gas inhalation.

Multiple demonstrations broke out in the area of Ramallah, with dozens of people taking part in each protest, the army said.

There too the army said it used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the riot.

In Nabi Saleh, on the outskirts of Ramallah, two Paleostinians were maimed by Israeli gunfire, according to Maan news.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
IDF soldiers did not respond to every protest in the West Bank. For instance, a group of Paleostinians burned tires and demonstrated in the city of Qalqilya, but the troops present have not taken action against the protesters, the army said.

In multiple locations along the Gazoo border, Paleostinians rolled burning tires and threw rocks at Israeli troops on the other side, the army said.

A military spokesperson said the IDF soldiers were working to push back the Paleostinians who approached the security fence, but would not comment on what means were used to disperse the riots. However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
Arab media reported that rubber-coated bullets and tear gas were fired at the protesters.

At least four Paleostinians were reported injured in the festivities.

In addition to expressing solidarity with the hundreds of hunger-striking prisoners, the Gazoo protests were also in response to the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Strip, according to local Arab media.

Due to a spat over tax payments between the West Bank-based Paleostinian Authority and Gazoo’s Hamas, a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth", rulers, the coastal enclave has only had minimal access to electricity in recent weeks, as neither side agrees to pay the costs for power.

The prison hunger strike, which began on April 17, is being led by prominent Fatah political figure and convicted terrorist Marwan Barghouti.

Death toll in Upper Egypt shooting attack on vehicles carrying Coptic Christians rises to 28: Minya governor
[AlAhram] The number of Christians killed in an armed attack on buses carrying pilgrims in Upper Egypt’s Minya governorate has risen to 28, with 23 injured, the governor announced on Friday afternoon.

In a phone call interview with local satellite channel ONTV live on Friday afternoon, Minya's governor, Essam El-Bedewy, announced the new corpse count, adding that seven of the victims were from El-Minya while the other 21 were from Beni Suef governroate.

Egypt's health ministry, however, maintains the corpse count at 26 .

Egypt’s interior ministry said in an official statement that unknown assailants driving three 4x4 wheelers attacked by "firing randomly" at the bus carrying Coptic citizens.

The ministry added that an official count of the final death and injuries toll was underway.

A cordon was imposed around the site of the attack, with security forces intensifying efforts to catch the culprits, according to the statement.

The ages of the victims ranged from children to over 60, the bishop of Minya told Egyptian private-owned TV Channel DMC. Many victims were children, only three children survived the attack, a source from the church told al-Ahram.

The bishop added that the vehicles attacked included a minibus and two cars.

The injured have been transferred to nearby hospitals for first aid and will later be moved to Nasser hospital in Cairo, according to the health minister's instructions, state news agency MENA reported.

No group has yet claimed the Minya attack, which is the latest in a series of deadly attacks on Egypt’s Christians.

Egyptian state Islamic authority cancels Ramadan celebration following attack on Copts in Minya

[AlAhram] Dar al-Iftaa, the Egyptian state body responsible for issuing Islamic edicts, has cancelled the celebrations scheduled on Friday to mark the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

The grand mufti, Shawqi Allam, who heads Dar al-Iftaa, has issued a statement condemning the attack.

Gunmen attacked vehicles carrying Coptic Christians on their way to Saint Samuel’s Monastery in Minya on Friday, killing 28 people and injuring 25, according to the latest toll.

Dar al-Iftaa organises a yearly committee to observe the appearance of the crescent moon, announcing the start of the new lunar month of Ramadan.

Malays, Indonesians among Maute fighters in Marawi
[SunStar] The Philippine military on Friday confirmed the presence of foreign terrorists in Mindanao after six of the 12 verified Maute militants, who were among those killed in clashes in Marawi City were from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Solicitor General Jose Calida said Indonesians and Malaysians are fighting alongside gunmen who attacked the city on Tuesday afternoon. He said, "What is happening in Mindanao is no longer a rebellion of Filipino citizens. It has transmogrified into an invasion by foreign terrorists who heeded the clarion call of ISIS."

Military spokesman Restituto Padilla said the foreign terrorists visited the country a few years back to educate and meet with different jihadi groups in Mindanao. He said the military had previously uncovered evidence of their presence through recovered passports and confirmed reports that came from their respective nations, as well as through intelligence reports.

Padilla said that President Duterte has not yet verified if these foreign terrorists are from the Islamic State, but affirmed that these groups are trying to ally with ISIS, eager to comply with the requirements.

"These terrorist groups in the country have not been able to comply yet and that is the reason why many of these activities of violence, radicalism, and extremism, have been aimed precisely in Mindanao for that purpose," he said.

Padilla also said drug-related activities are the sole means for the Maute Group of generating funds for their attacks. He added that evidence of drug paraphernalia were recovered during their previous operations in the camps of the terrorist group.

Troops backed by armored vehicles and rocket-firing helicopters are still fighting to re-take control of Marawi, which has been under siege by gunmen since a raid earlier this week failed to capture one of Asia's most-wanted terrorists.

Rebels have taken over the streets of Marawi since Tuesday night, torching buildings, taking a priest and his worshippers hostage and sealing off much of the city. The violence forced thousands to flee the area.

At least 44 people have died in the fighting, including 31 rebels and 11 soldiers, officials said Thursday. It is not yet clear whether civilians were among the dead. Military Chief of Staff Eduardo Ano said that Hapilon is still in the besieged city and supporters are trying to find a way to extricate their leader.

Much of Marawi was still a no-go zone. Automatic gunfire and explosions could be heard clearly and plumes of black smoke rose from the direction of the city center. Air force helicopters swooped overhead.

As authorities tried to gain more control over the city, disturbing details have emerged. The rebels forced their way into the Marawi Cathedral and seized a Catholic priest, ten worshippers and three church workers, according to the city's bishop, Edwin de la Pena. Islamic State flags were planted atop buildings and flown from commandeered vehicles, including a government ambulance and an armored car, said Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr., vice governor of Lanao del Sur province, of which Marawi is the capital.

More than half of the population of Marawi has cleared out, Adiong said.

Dozens dead as Philippine troops, supported by gunships, fight militants in southern city of Marawi
[SCMP] Indonesians and Malaysians were among foreign Jihadists fighting the Philippine army in Mindanao island, Manila’s solicitor-general said on Friday, in a rare admission that outsiders were collaborating with domestic Islamist groups.

Philippine troops backed by armoured vehicles and rocket-firing helicopters fought to retake control of Marawi City, which has been under attack by gunnies linked to Islamic State

Rights activists highlight threats to existence of Kalash tribe
[DAWN] "As members of the Kalash community we are facing threats to change our religion, our land is being occupied and the names of our places are being changed. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the media is portraying only our dances rather than highlighting our issues."

This was stated by Gul Nazar, a representative of the Kalash community in Chitral, at a seminar on Thursday. The "Consultation on challenges for the Kalash community: the way forward" was organised by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistain (HRCP) at a local hotel.

Ms Gul demanded that the Kalash area should be included in the World Heritage List in order to protect it. "Development work should be carried out in the area and basic facilities such as healthcare and education should be provided to the community. The syllabus of education should be in the local language. Doctors come to the Kalash valleys during the summer season and go back as soon as the tourism season ends," she said.

"Kalash people are not aware of their rights. On the other hand, people from other areas are occupying their land. Dozens of Kalash people have been forced to change their religion. We have been trying to protect our graveyards as people even steal the bones of our deceased," she alleged.

Ms Gul, who also looks after a Kalash museum, said the museum had all the information about the Kalash people but around three dozen officials of the elite force are now stationed there due to which the visitors are facing problems.

"When we approached the police officer of the area to address the issue, he said we cannot teach him archaeology and he cannot not teach us security measures. So we had no option but to close the museum," she said.

Luke Rehmat, another representative of the community, said the Kalasha religion was divided into pure and impure.

"Men cannot go to places where children are born and those who go to the delivery places cannot enter the respective village for a certain period of time but tourists violate these restrictions due to which the community suffers mentally as there are a number of stories (superstitions) associated with it," he said.

"Our religious ways are being blocked and names of our places are being replaced with Moslem names such as Qaziabad and Ahmedabad," he said.

Ali Ahmad Jan, the director of a civil society organization, Sustainable Solution, said outsiders should not have the right to purchase land in the Kalash valleys like people of Pakistain cannot purchase land in Kashmire.

"Some religious groups have been working in the Kalash valleys and forcing people to convert to Islam. Once a Kalash person accepts Islam, they are not allowed to wear the traditional Kalash dress and even are suggested not to speak the local language. There are also some religious scholars who say every Moslem should convince at least six non-Moslems to accept Islam. As a result, forced conversions are on the rise in the Kalash valleys," he said.

HRCP member Nasreen Azhar, who chaired the event, said the Kalash community land was being occupied by outsiders and a large number of constructions were underway in the area.

"People from other areas also go there to build restaurants. There is a need to look into all these issues," she said.

Senator Farhatullah Babar said the Kalash community should move their case with the parliamentary committee on the marginalised people. He said every person had the right to live and practice their religion in Pakistain.

Iftikharuddin, Member National Assembly (MNA) from Chitral where the Kalash valleys are located, said there were severe security challenges in the area and the state had to fulfil its responsibility.

Afghanistan
Fresh Taliban attack on Afghan base kills at least 15 soldiers
[Dhaka Tribune] At least 15 Afghan soldiers were killed when Taliban
...Arabic for students...
fighters attacked their army base in the southern province of Kandahar, the defence ministry said Friday, in the second such assault on Western-backed forces this week.

The attack in Shah Wali Kot district late Thursday came just three days after 10 Afghan soldiers were killed when Talibs stormed another base in the same area.

The assault, mounted by hundreds of murderous Moslems, highlights a growing Taliban offensive in Kandahar, where security has relatively improved in recent years under the leadership of police chief and regional strongman General Abdul Raziq.

"The Taliban launched a coordinated assault on an army base last night (Thursday) in Shah Wali Kot district of Kandahar province," ministry front man Dawlat Waziri said. "15 Afghan army soldiers were martyred and five others maimed... but the base was under the control of Afghan forces."

A provincial official who spoke on the condition of anonymity gave a higher corpse count of 20.

The Taliban grabbed credit for the Kandahar attack as their annual spring offensive intensifies and the insurgency expands more than 15 years after they were toppled from power in a US-led invasion.

The attack marks another setback for NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Originally it was a mutual defense pact directed against an expansionist Soviet Union. In later years it evolved into a mechanism for picking the American pocket while criticizing the cut of the American pants...
-backed Afghan forces. It comes just a month after the Taliban killed at least 135 soldiers in the northern province of Balkh in the deadliest murderous Moslem attack on an Afghan military base since 2001.

The battlefield losses have raised concerns about the capacity of Afghan forces, beset by unprecedented casualties and blamed for corruption, desertion and "ghost soldiers" who exist on the payroll but whose salaries are usurped by fraudulent commanders.

During a deadly Taliban attack on security outposts in southern Zabul province on Sunday, local officials made desperate calls to Afghan television stations to seek attention because they were unable to contact senior authorities for help.

The pleas for attention, a major embarrassment for the Western-backed government, highlighted the disarray in security ranks.

As of February only about 60% of Afghanistan’s 407 districts were reported to be under government control, with the authorities in Kabul struggling to counter the ascendant Taliban, according to the US watchdog agency Sigar.

The Taliban launched their annual "spring offensive" in late April, heralding a surge in fighting as the US tries to craft a new Afghan strategy.

ISIS faceless myrmidons in the Arab country, amid attempts by the terrorist group to reorganize itself elsewhere.

The Iraqi volunteer forces, commonly known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha'abi, said on Friday that they had captured the road linking the towns of Sinjar and al-Ba’aj, located west of the recently liberated district of Qairawan, which lies to the west of Mosul.

According to al-Sumaria news website, the popular forces had also captured the villages of Biski, al-Hatemia, Qabusia and Rambus Gharbia.

Domiz residential complex and Sinjar military base, located to the west of Mosul, were also liberated from the control of the ISIS terrorists.

The advances come as Iraqi army soldiers and pro-government popular fighters are engaged in a large-scale military operation to completely liberate Mosul.

The Iraqi forces took control of eastern Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting, and launched the battle in the west on February 19.

US hampering Mosul liberation operation
A senior commander of Hashd al-Sha’abi slammed the so-called US-led coalition purportedly fighting ISIS, saying it was hindering efforts to liberate Mosul.

Hadi al-Ameri said the coalition provided very little assistance to the Iraqi troops.

The United States and some of its allies have been carrying out Arclight airstrikes in Iraq since June 2014 allegedly targeting ISIS terrorists. The raids, which have done little to dislodge the terror group, have on numerous occasions claimed many civilian lives and inflicted damage on the Iraqi infrastructure.

ISIS moves from Mosul to Hawijah
As ISIS loses its grip on Mosul, reports say the terrorist group is trying to reorganize itself in another Iraqi city.

Anwar al-Assi, the supervisor of Hawijah liberation force, said on Friday that ISIS had transferred its headquarters from Mosul to the city of Hawijah in the southwestern province of Kirkuk.

He said senior commanders of ISIS had chosen the city and the areas of al-Rab, al-Riad, al-Abbasi and al-Rashad following their defeat in Mosul.

Assi said about 400 faceless myrmidons had been relocated to the city, some of them via the Tigris River, on Thursday.

He added that the faceless myrmidons were transferred with their eyes covered in order to keep them from learning the route.

Assi said ISIS had mobilized its faceless myrmidons to attack Hamrin Mountains and Alas and Ajil oil fields as well as the areas bordering Tuz and Amerli.

Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, another bullet hole appeared in Butch's hat......
Kirkuk Governor Najmaldin Karim warned that Hawijah would turn into the de facto capital of ISIS in the absence of security forces.

According to Iraqi sources, Hawijah and its surrounding areas have been under the control of ISIS since summer 2014.

Bangladesh
Hefazat: Remove all idols from public areas
[Dhaka Tribune] Hefajat-e-Islam
...a madrassa-based false nose and mustache of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, formed in 2010 to protest against secular education. In 2011 demonstrated violentyly against women's rights and in 2013 held large rallies demanding capital punishment of Shahbag Square protesters and banning women working outside the home...
Bangladesh’s Dhaka Committee chief Nur Hossain Kashemi on Friday demanded removal of all idols from public places in the country.

He made the statement in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after the Jumma prayers. Prior to that, supporters of the Islamic group had staged what they called a "thanksgiving procession."

"We will not tolerate any idols on roadsides in the country," he said.

When later contacted by phone, a representative of Hefazat’s Dhaka Committee could not specify which statues counted as idols.

Kashemi also thanked Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
for removing the Lady Justice "idol" from the Supreme Court premises, which she had earlier committed to doing.

At the programme, Hefazat’s Dhaka city unit Vice-Chairman Mojibur Rahman Hamidi also vowed to ensure that no idols remain in the country in the future.

"If anyone tries to build them, then the Islamic people will give them a proper reply," he threatened.

Subsequently, the procession leaders held a prayer session seeking a long life for the prime minister.

"Removal of all idols erected in Dhaka, the city of mosques, and elsewhere in the country" was one of the 13-point demands put forward by Hefazat in 2013. The government at that time refused to meet the demand citing constitutional and several international obligations.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told the Dhaka Tribune in February: "The demands brought up by the Islamist parties are irrational and baseless. There is no reason to think that the sculpture will be removed just because someone demanded that it be so."

In February, Khushi Kabir, head of rights organization Nijera Kori, feared that if this demand was fulfilled, these groups would raise questions about other sculptures such as Oporajeyo Bangla, Raju Bhashkorjo, or Amar Ekushey.

"The demolition of the Lalon sculpture from in front of the Dhaka airport [in 2008] has encouraged the religious zealots to make such demands," she told the Dhaka Tribune.

But things changed after the prime minister in April said that she too did not like the "idol" installed near the National Eidgah ground.

Consider the 'economic miracles' of the Far East, Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan, and now China. They did it by adopting (Northern) Western European Civilization, its techniques and processes. Not to mention developing a large popluation that could read, write, and articulate the modern international language, English. Today's language of science, technology, aviation, medicine, etc. rather than promoting their own tribal languages.

BTW, as an exercise in stats, blacks make up 12 percent of the general population, of which one third are reported to live in poverty (not Haitian poverty). That's about 4 percent of the overall population. The white population makes up about 75 percent of the population of which ten percent live in poverty or 7.5 percent of the general population. So you are twice as likely to be a poor white than a poor black. Remember that white privilege.

Attack on Christians in Egypt indicates sponsored sectarianism: Iran
[Iran Press TV] Iran has denounced an armed attack on a bus carrying Coptic Christians in south of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, saying the criminal act was a clear example of sectarianism supported by certain powers.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Friday that the recent terrorist attacks in the British city of Manchester, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Egypt have all been carried out after US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...

...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
"The unrelenting repetition of such incidents can be signs of the reanimation of the supported sectarianism whose other side we are witnessing in the ongoing crackdown and killing in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the bloody war in Yemen," he added.
He emphasized that the recent gathering of over 50 states in the Saudi capital Riyadh, held under the pretext of fighting extremism and terrorism, had in fact had no outcome but support for the source of the promotion of the Takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who must be killed...
ideology of Wahhabism and financial and logistic aid for armed terrorism throughout the world.

It should not be expected that such a spectacle would help enhance security in the world, he said.

The Iranian spokesperson said supported extremism and sectarianism would directly result in the killing of innocent Moslems, Christians and followers of other religions.

Qassemi urged countries and international organizations to fulfill their international responsibilities vis-à-vis collective security and a genuine campaign against terrorism.

He also expressed his sympathy with the Egyptian government, nation and the bereaved families of the victims.

At least 28 people, including children, were killed and over two dozen others maimed after unknown gunnies attacked a bus carrying Coptic Christians on a visit to a monastery south of Cairo on Friday.

According to Egypt's Interior Ministry, the assailants in three pick-up trucks attacked the bus as it carried visitors to the Saint Samuel monastery in Minya province, more than 200 kilometers from the capital.

Ramadan Special: Arab TV Series Filmed in Lebanon Showcases Untold Stories of IS Women
[AnNahar] They are mothers, daughters, wives -- and jacket wallahs: an Arab television drama timed for the Moslem holy month of Ramadan tells the untold stories of women and the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

Inspired by true events, "Black Crows" airs over Ramadan -- prime time for television viewers in the Arab world -- which starts this weekend, and it is the first television series depicting life under IS rule in Syria and Iraq.

Produced by Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's MBC Group, the series focuses on the stories of the women who volunteer with or are forced to join the jihadist group and "the fear that shapes" their relationships.

"We wanted to tell real stories that would both touch people and reflect the ugly reality of terrorism," MBC front man Mazen Hayek told AFP at the network's Dubai headquarters.

"We realized that the Arab media could no longer sit and watch while terrorist groups used media as a central part of their war."

One episode features a girl and her grandmother, both in the niqab Moslem veil, selling dinner plates decorated with pictures of animals in an IS-controlled village in order to survive.

A group of armed women from the Hesba, the krazed killers' female police unit, order them to pack their goods on the grounds that the animal designs were "haram", or forbidden in Islam.

But the grandmother refuses to yield to Hesba's authority, saying she would rather break her plates than give in.

She is shot in the head by a member of the Hesba.

Another episode shows a training camp for children with machine-guns and "human targets" -- prisoners taken by IS.

"Bullets are faster than people," a gunman reminds a child aiming at prisoners scrambling to take cover. "Get two more of them and you can go see your mum."

With a cast including actors from Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iraq, the $10-million production was filmed mainly in Leb and took over a year to research and another six months to shoot.

"Shocking scenes" in the series could "either attract or repel the viewer, but he could not remain indifferent," said Fadi Ismail, head of the production company.

"It is strong drama and the viewer can always control what to watch," he said.

- 'Security challenge' -
Leb, the main location, hosts more than one million Syrian refugees and has been the scene of deadly suicide kabooms claimed by IS.

"Security was our most difficult challenge" during shooting, said executive producer Amer Sabbah.

"When you transform an area in Leb into what resembles an IS headquarters, you have to consider security and safety of your crew," he said.

In 2015, an MBC-produced Ramadan special, a satire named "Selfie", took aim at IS with a storyline in which the Saudi main character heads to Syria to bring back his son who had joined the group.

The actor, Nasser al-Qasbi, received a string of online death threats after the episode aired.

ISIS unable to hold its ground as Iraqi forces liberate five more villages near the border
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) are gaining steady ground in the western Nineveh governorate, liberating five more desert villages over the past 24 hours.

Engaging seemingly demoralized ISIS krazed killers, the PMU ‐ commanded by Haider al-Ameri ‐ managed to take control over the villages of Tall Ghiza, Hatimyia, Qabosyia, north Kabisa and south Kabisa.

Amid the aforementioned advance, an ISIS boom-mobile raced towards PMU positions only to be blown apart before reaching its designated target:

The PMU offensive looks to liberate the ISIS stronghold of al-Ba’aj and push towards the Syrian border, possibly even crossing into the Deir Ezzor governorate in support of the Syrian Armed Forces.

De Blasio employee arrested for child pornography
[NYPOST] A leading young Democrat and de Blasio administration employee has a secret taste for sickening kiddie porn that involves baby girls as young as 6 months old, court papers revealed Friday.

Jacob Schwartz, 29, was busted for allegedly keeping more than 3,000 disgusting images and 89 videos on a laptop after downloading the filth from the internet.

The illegal smut shows "young nude females between the approximate ages of 6 months and 16, engaging in sexual conduct... on an adult male," court papers say.

Schwartz’s father -- labor lawyer and Democratic insider Arthur Schwartz -- called his son’s case "a personal tragedy."

"I understand these are serious charges," said the elder Schwartz, who watched his son get arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday night.

"He’s already in therapy for this."

Jacob Schwartz surrendered to NYPD computer-crimes Sherlocks in Manhattan’s 13th Precinct on Thursday morning, sources said.

‘I.S. is here’ Duterte warns as battle rages on in southern Philippines city
[SCMP] Foreigners are among Islamist gunnies battling security forces in a southern Philippine city, the government said as soldiers tore down black Islamic State

(IS) flags in retaken districts and the reported corpse count climbed to 46.

Tens of thousands of people have fled festivities raging in Marawi, one of the biggest Moslem cities in the mainly Catholic Philippines, with cars choking roads out of the area.

President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law across the southern region of Mindanao on Tuesday, hours after gunnies loyal to Islamic State rampaged through the city in response to a raid on one of their safe houses.

"You can see that [IS] is here already," Duterte said in a speech yesterday at a military camp near Marawi, as officials said the Death Eaters were from multiple countries.

Six imported muscle were believed to have died in the bloodshed, according to Philippine military front man Brigadier-General Restituto Padilla, including Malaysians, Indonesians and another nationality which he did not specify. Another government official listed Singaporeans as also among the hard boys.

Padilla said 11 soldiers, two coppers and 31 bandidos Death Eaters had been confirmed killed in the fighting, which has involved the military bombing buildings where the bandidos Death Eaters have been hiding.
