E.g. "FRACKING" CONTROVERSY/ISSUE, the US-WORLD = future OWG-NWO will face a significant crisis before 2040-2050 as per "Peak Oil/Resources" WHICH WILL FORCE A "GLOBAL/UNIVERSAL" DECISION TO BE MADE + ENFORCED WHETHER THE BIG OR SMALL NATIONS LIKE THE MERITS OR NOT.

China-Japan-Koreas
Japan: Adult Diaper Sales Excede Those for Babies
One interesting figure has come out of the diaper manufacturer Unicharm.

It announced last week for the first time ever sales of its adult diapers were larger than those for babies.

The question everybody asks is why is there a lack of children?

The answer seems to lie in several reasons. One reason is the cost. Japan is an extremely expensive country and getting a child through college can wipe out a family's finances.

Another argument is that there are more effeminate men now called "Herbivores" there who are either not interested in sex or women don't find masculine enough.

Then some suggest many young Japanese people prefer "virtual" friends with a robot or on the internet, while others suggest their fascination with comics rather than relationships is the cause for a lack of babies.

Despite concerns about the lack of babies, the country is still a very crowded place.

Europe
UK bookmakers suspend betting on a Greek euro exit
Want a flutter on Greece leaving the euro zone? It may already be too late. A surge in bets has forced Britain's biggest bookmakers William Hill Plc and Ladbrokes Plc to suspend betting on the odds of Greece dropping out.

The failure of Greece's leaders to form a government has renewed speculation that Greece could be forced out of the single currency.

William Hill said the level of betting on Greece quitting first was such that it had become too risky to continue taking bets, with the odds pushed right down to 1/4.

"We've had Greece as hot favorites for some time but increasingly it was becoming the only one that people wanted to bet on," said a spokesman for William Hill, Britain's largest betting firm.

"It wasn't a healthy situation for bookmakers. We found it was virtually impossible to make a book."

Hollande: Sarkozy underplayed budget woes
PARIS -- French President-elect Francois Hollande suggested Friday that the government of outgoing leader Nicolas Sarkozy underestimated the country's budget problems and wants a new audit of France's books.
The back-tracking on all promises made during the campaign begins. Everyone now under the bus, or whatever it is they drive around in France...
But Hollande, a Socialist elected Sunday to lead the world's fifth-biggest economy, said that wouldn't hurt his ability to fulfill campaign pledges. Those include higher taxes on the rich, thousands of new teaching jobs and freezes on some government spending.
You can always increase taxes and it always works. Ask any socialist...
And Hollande stuck to his own deficit reduction goals despite new European Union figures released Friday that paint a bleak picture for France and the whole eurozone.

"I have known for several weeks that there was a greater degradation than the outgoing government said there was. We conclude that this is a confirmation," Hollande told reporters in the central city of Tulle.

He said the new figures do not necessarily mean he has less room to maneuver after he takes office Tuesday. "No, we had already expected this," he said in remarks shown on French television.
He's just laying out a marker here so that in the future he can point back and say, "it's all Sarkozy's fault." We've seen this in the U.S. where Champ is still blaming Bush for everything.
He said he's asked for an audit of France's budget by the Cour des Comptes, budget watchdog. The audit is expected to be completed by late June.

The European Commission predicted 0.5 percent growth for France this year and 1.3 percent next year if current policies are maintained. Hollande is aiming for 1.7 percent growth next year.

The commission forecast that the deficit would be 4.2 percent next year, well above the 3 percent Hollande is targeting.
Higher taxes will cause the French wealthy to move their assets to London. The deficit will become worse. Hollande will raise more taxes to compensate...
Hollande campaigned on promises to end a push for austerity started under Sarkozy, saying France and other European countries need government stimuli to get back to growth. Sarkozy argued that more government spending would only push debts up higher and worry markets and investors.

Home Front: Culture Wars
ObamaCare’s Muslim Exemption
Laws almost always create unanticipated consequences. This is certainly likely to be the case when politicians bend over backwards to accommodate the currents of political correctness.

ObamaCare uses the Social Security language of the Internal Revenue Code to determine who is eligible for “religious conscience” objection to the insurance mandate. Specifically, the law provides exemptions for adherents of “recognized religious sects” that are “conscientiously opposed” to accepting benefits from any insurance, public or private.

As a consequence of this provision, Muslims may claim a religious exemption that is denied Christians and Jews. Since Islam believes insurance is haraam (forbidden) and likens insurance to gambling, the religion is excluded from requirements, mandates, or penalties set forth in the bill. Others who fall into this category are the Amish, American Indians, and Christian Scientists. Although the U.S. Constitution grants all Americans equal protection of the law, some Americans are more equal than others.

ObamaCare is specifically written not to apply equally to everyone. It is in most respects a law intended to discriminate — what some might call an extended Jim Crow law. If this seems exaggerated, consider: Jim Crow laws were based on racial discrimination, while ObamaCare is predicated on religious discrimination. Government acted based on a preconceived and arbitrary understanding of what is right.

For example, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Max Baucus indicated that the purpose of ObamaCare is as much about redistributing income as it is about reforming health care. This is an application of government’s iron fist, putting income distribution and religious discrimination in the hands of Washington bureaucrats.

By any reasonable standard, ObamaCare (and the Congress that enacted it) is completely unfettered from the Constitution. If logic — Washington logic — accommodates Sharia’s prohibition against gambling and hence insurance, Christians and Jews should claim that the state’s ability to expropriate property under the Commerce Clause of the Constitution is a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, thereby legitimating an exemption for these groups as well.

Muslims are given exemptions from law everyone else must follow. What has actually been enacted is a wedge between Muslims and Christians and Jews. Americans are pitted against Americans, Christian against Muslim, the Torah against the Koran.

In a curious way the privilege granted Muslims and denied to most others translates into what Muslims call “dhimmitude,” or the taxing of non-Muslims in exchange for the acceptance of their presence. Intentionally or not, ObamaCare allows for the establishment of this practice and Sharia dictates in the United States. Conversely, if a Christian refuses to pay for required health care insurance, liens can be placed against assets and hard prison time could accompany noncompliance. Non-Muslims are, in effect, paying a tax to subsidize Muslims.

#4  The clause was inserted, persumably, for the Amish.

With respect to Moslems, probably 60-80% of them have health insurance now, notwithstanding whether it is considered haram. The authority to declare Moslems (or for that matter Amish) as exempt from the insurance mandate rests with the Sec of HHS.

Egyptians abroad vote in presidential elections
Egyptian expatriates in 166 countries are heading to the polls for elections to replace ousted leader Hosni Mubarak that are hoped to be the first genuinely contested presidential vote in the country's history.

The voting comes a day after two election front-runners, one of Mubarak's former foreign ministers and a moderate Islamist, squared off in the Arab world's first ever presidential debate.

Elections authorities say less than a million Egyptians out of nearly 10 million living abroad registered to vote. Saudi Arabia has the largest number of Egyptian voters.

Expatriate voting starts Friday and ends May 17. Voters inside Egypt will cast their ballots on May 23-24. If no candidate wins 50 percent of the votes, a runoff is scheduled for June.

Pirates 'seize' Greek-owned tanker off Oman
Pirates have hijacked a Greek-owned oil tanker carrying 135,000 metric tonnes of crude oil while in the Arabian Sea, the first successful attack on an oil tanker off the Horn of Africa in more than a year.

Dynacom Tankers Management, which manages the vessel, said it had lost contact with the crew of the MT Smyrni, a Suezmax-class tanker, following the attack off Oman at 1115 GMT on Thursday.

"The Liberian-flagged Tanker, the MT Smyrni, is carrying a cargo of 135,000 MT of crude oil," it said.
Quick! Someone call the Liberian Navy!
Suezmax tankers typically can transport a crude oil cargo of up to one million barrels, compared with two to three million barrels for very large oil tankers.

Dynacom gave no further details but a Kenya-based piracy expert, Andrew Mwangura, said the vessel was headed for the Somali coastline.

Industry websites said the vessel had sailed from Turkey, but there were mixed reports about its destination.

"Aboard are nine Indians and about eight Filipinos," Mwangura, who is maritime editor of Somalia Report, a private regional news portal, said. "It is headed to Somalia."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
US officials said to be fearful of looming Israeli strike on Iran
US officials fear the unity government established earlier this week signals an impending Israeli attack on Iran, Channel 10 News reported Thursday evening.
They mean 'Cowering, fearful, scaredy cat US officials'. The ones who are fretting about Champ's election. A fair number of Americans have no problem with Israel protecting itself and are concerned (not afraid, concerned) only that Israel does it right.
According to the report, officials are holding marathon talks in Washington out of concern that an Israeli attack on Iran's nuclear program may take place before the US presidential elections in November.
Should have done it already and would have it you guys had kept your mouths shut. But you leaned on the Israelis so they held off. As the old saying goes, 'be careful what you wish for'...
Undisclosed Washington sources told Channel 10 that they worry Kadima was offered a place in the coalition to shore up support for a preemptive attack aimed at halting the Islamic Republic's nuclear drive, and that Kadima chairman Shaul Mofaz would approve of such an attack.
Because Mofaz has no wish to die from an Iranian nuke or an Iranian biological/gas attack...
The report added that the US officials believe early Israeli elections would have kept the F-15s at bay, but are now genuinely concerned that with political backing, there is little to stop Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from ordering the attack.
Certainly not Champ...
In a joint press conference held Tuesday, Netanyahu and Kadima leader Shaul Mofaz said they saw eye-to eye on a slew of issues, including Iran. In the past Mofaz has been a vocal critic of the notion of Israel striking Iran's nuclear sites on its own, but Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak are both believed to favor an early strike.

Having gone to sleep with expectations of September elections, Israelis woke up to a new political reality Tuesday morning, learning that overnight, Netanyahu and Mofaz signed a deal to form a unity government.

Legislation to dissolve parliament was frozen after it had been approved on a first reading. The Netanyahu-Mofaz deal provides for this Knesset to see out its term, until October 2013.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Today's Idiot
WILMER (CBSDFW.COM) – Keithan Manuel is sitting inside the Dallas County Jail Tuesday night waiting for someone to believe him –– it was a jape, a jest, a stab at humor, he told investigators. He didn’t really want to rob that police station.
"I was just having a bit of fun!"
Police, however, say the 18-year-old walked into the Wilmer Police Department Saturday evening with a white towel covering his hands.

Police Chief Victor Kemp described the incident saying, “Yeah well, a young man walked into the lobby and approached the dispatch window there and told our Communications Officer ‘give me all your money.’”
Robbing a police station? *to Dragnet motif* Dumb dumb-dumb dumb/Dumb dumb-dumb dumb DUMB!
After pointing a towel-covered hand at the officer and making the statement, Manuel soon changed his tune and claimed he was there to get some data on a thing or two.
Then he screamed in pain, as his lips fell off.
“He said he’d like to check on a warrant, but it was pretty obvious it was a situation … he gave a different name and after a few moments of maybe playing it off he said ‘you do know I have a gun’. At that point he seemed to be very serious,” Kemp said.

It was then the officer decided she didn’t feel like ‘joking’.

“She called for officers immediately and called for backup from another agency,” Kemp recalled. “The officers arrived and were able to take him down at gunpoint.”
"Freeze, beauzeau!"
Manuel didn’t have a weapon, but dispatcher Patrice Hughey said he said otherwise, recalling the teen telling her, “Well, you know I have a launcher of high-velocity lead, right?”

“I didn’t say nothing like that, I swear to God I didn’t say nothing like that; that’s why they didn’t find no guns on me,” Manuel said. “Man I play like that all the time, I didn’t think she would take it seriously.”
You thought a cop wouldn't take a declaration of robbery seriously? *headdesk*
Manuel remains is in the Dallas County Jail with a $200,000 bond for several charges, including Robbery.

“This young man wasn’t using his head for sure,” he said. “You hear of those World’s Dumbest Criminals every once in a while but you never think it’s gonna happen in your city.”

TSA removes 18-month old baby from plane.
Yes, the airline was profiling, and that stinks for those at the receiving end. But let's not forget that the CIA is currently examining an unexploded pantibomb that's invisible to the X-ray machines, and likely to unspecialized manual examination as well, and there have been females with Muslim names who've flown hither and yon in pursuit of jihad. And the family were delayed only half an hour before getting on the very same airplane and going on their way. Instead of being mad about being profiled, shouldn't they be furious that others are creating this situation in the name of their shared religion?

Ojukwu's widow appointed ambassador
[Daily Nation (Kenya)]

Months after the demise of the Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, his widow Bianca Ojukwu has been appointed ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Bianca, a former beauty queen and heroine of multiple pageants including the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, Miss Intercontinental and Miss Africa was yesterday confirmed by the Senate as ambassador following nomination by President Goodluck Jonathan.
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
Mrs Ojukwu's confirmation was announced after consideration of a report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs following which her nomination was unanimously approved by the senators.

Bianca was last year nominated as an ambassador by President Jonathan along with 87 others but was unable to attend the Senate screening with other nominees following the death of her husband on November 10, 2011.

The Senator Matthew Nwagwu-led committee on Foreign Affairs eventually screened her on April 25 and recommended that she be confirmed as an ambassador.

Senate President, David Mark, said he was convinced that Ms Ojukwu would make a good mark as an ambassador representing Federal Republic of Nigeria.

US committee bill places conditions upon aid to Pakistan
[Dawn] The US House Armed Services Committee has placed strict conditions on the financial and military assistance being given out to Pakistain.

The committee, in the defence budget bill, asked Pakistain to openly support America in the war against terror. It further asked Pakistain to stop the supply of kabooms used in IED's to Afghanistan.

The American authorities maintained that the explosives, that were being sent to Afghanistan via Pakistain, were responsible for the deaths and injuries to American troops and that this situation is totally unacceptable to the US.

The said defence budget bill, that already is supported by the representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties, would be presented in the next session.

Maliki Says Turkish Remarks Do Not Show 'Mutual Respect'
[An Nahar] Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki
... Prime Minister of Iraq and the secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party....
criticized Turkey on Thursday for remarks he said did not show "mutual respect", in the latest bout of a weeks-long spat between the two neighbors.

Maliki's comments came as Turkey said it would not extradite runaway Iraqi Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, who is accused of running death squads and is the subject of an Interpol international Red Notice.

"We do not have any problems with Turkey," Maliki told NRT, a Kurdish satellite channel, according to a statement issued by his office that included quotes from the yet-to-be broadcast interview.

"We do not want to antagonize Turkey, or Iran, or America, or Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
, or any other country, but what happened and the remarks issued by Turkey do not show mutual respect."

His remarks come after Iraq and Turkey last month summoned each other's ambassadors to express their displeasure over a worsening row.

At the time, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Maliki, a Shiite, of stoking sectarian tensions between Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds, and of monopolizing power.

Maliki fired back, saying such comments "will damage Turkey's interests and makes it a hostile state for all."

The Iraqi premier's latest comments came as Turkish deputy prime minister Bekir Bozdag said on Wednesday that Ankara would not extradite Hashemi, whose trial in Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
is due to begin on May 15 after two delays.

These talks must ensure that the interests of Syria and its people are set above all others, remarked the president.

Two powerful blasts struck Damascus during morning rush hour on Thursday, killing at least 40 people, wounding dozens.

Suleiman had held talks earlier on Thursday with visiting Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, who is in Leb to take part in the Arab Economic Forum.

Bangladesh
Fakhrul among 45 charged
[Bangla Daily Star] Detectives yesterday pressed charges against 45 leaders and activists of BNP-led 18-party alliance, including BNP acting secretary general, for torching a vehicle near Prime Minister's Office (PMO) during April 29 shutdown.

Inspector of the Detective Branch of Police Nurul Amin, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court yesterday around 10:45am.

The court will decide on May 13 whether it will take into cognisance the charges brought against the accused.

BNP, however, termed the cases and the charge sheet "false and politically motivated" and asked the government to withdraw both without any delay.

On April 29, two cases had been filed with Tejgaon and Ramna cop shoppes against leaders and activists of 18-party alliance in connection with torching a bus in front of the PMO and a blast at the secretariat on that day.

"The government has filed the cases and submitted the charge sheet only to divert public attention from the ongoing anti-government movement, but they won't succeed," said BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain while addressing a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club.

Talking to The Daily Star, defence counsel Masud Ahmed Talukder said the court would not be able to give any order on the charge sheet on May 13, as the third bench of the High Court was yet to pass any order on the dissenting orders of the division bench regarding bail of the 30 accused in the two cases.

Of the accused, Mohammad Sohel alias Sohan Miah, conductor of the bus torched; Mohammad Jasim Uddin and Manik Ratan, helpers of the vehicle; Mohammad Kamruzzaman Ratan, former student leader; Mohammad Ismail Khan Shahin, president of Titumir College unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal
...student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)...
(JCD); Mohammad Mannan Hossain Shahin, Swechchhasebak Dal president of Mohammadpur Police Station area; and BNP joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed were earlier nabbed
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
and sent to jail.

Another accused in the arson case Mahbub Uddin Khokon got bail on May 9 on his surrender before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate's court till May 20.

The IO yesterday showed BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and 36 others as runaways since he [the IO] did not receive the copies of their bail order. The IO also sought issuance of arrest warrant against them and an order to attach their moveable property.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch, Butch and the Kid finally brought their horses under control...
the IO dropped the name of Chhatra Shibir General Secretary Abdur Jabbar as his full address was not found during investigation. He showed 18 people, including the owner and the driver of the vehicle torched as prosecution witnesses.

If the charges are proved, the minimum punishment for arson will be two years' rigorous imprisonment while the maximum five years' rigorous imprisonment.

River near Love Lane Bridge within the remit of the Pak Colony cop shoppe on Wednesday, officials said.

The police added that Fawad Sheikh, 31, and his 35-year-old friend, Tariq Kamal, were believed to have been kidnapped on Sunday.

Their families were quoted as saying that they had received a call from kidnappers who told them that both the men were police informants and would be killed for that reason. The victims had sustained gunshot wounds to the head, the police said, adding that their bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi

for a post-mortem examination.

Father of an infant, Fawad Sheikh was associated with leather business and lived in Gizri.

Tariq Kamal, a crime news hound working for a local daily, was a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Their missing reports were lodged at the Gizri cop shoppe, officials said.

Pak Colony SHO Saleem Marwat said the kidnappers apparently killed them on the suspicion of being police informant, as they had also called their families before the murder and told them about the victims' links to the police.

Speaking to Dawn, editor of daily Sindh Task Rizwan Khanzada said his staff had informed him about the kidnapping of Tariq Kamal on May 5.

He quoted Kamal's mother as saying that she received a phone call from the kidnappers who told her that they did not want ransom. "They told her that they were going to kill him as he is a police informant," he said.

According to him, the kidnapper used Kamal's cellphone to call her mother. When the call was traced, it was found that it was made from somewhere near Hub Chowki or Vinder, he added.

The police said it was not yet clear if the victims had been kidnapped from Vinder or Bloody Karachi.

The officials quoted Fawad Sheikh's nephew, Mohammad Ali, as saying that his uncle left home to meet Mr Kamal on Sunday but went missing. The following day, someone called the victim's wife telling her that they would kill him because he was working for police.

A case (FIR 115/2012) was lodged at the Pak Colony cop shoppe against unidentified persons on a complaint of a victim's brother, Saleem.

Body found

Earlier on Wednesday morning, the body of a young man, associated with prize bond business, was found in the Moosa Lane area of Lyari, officials said. The officials added that t
his was the first killing in the area following the Lyari operation.

Mohammad, 45, son of Younis, left his shop on Tuesday evening telling his associate that he was going to meet someone but did not return, said an official at the Baghdadi cop shoppe.

The official said the victim had been killed somewhere else before his body was dumped there. He sustained two bullet wounds to the head. The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi for a post-mortem examination, the police said.

Clash claims two lives

Two people were killed and another was maimed in a clash between two groups of rickshaw drivers in the Bakra Piri area of Malir, police said.

One of the victims, Hafeez, 28, son of Dur Mohammad, was said to be associated with the outlawed People's Amn Committee, while the identity of the other man killed in the clash could not be ascertained, said an official at the Malir City cop shoppe.

The groups became involved in the clash at the Bakra Piri rickshaw stand in Malir 15, said the official, adding that during the brawl, someone in the crowd pulled out a pistol and fired multiple shots before fleeing.

Three people sustained gunshot wounds, while the crowd dispersed due to the firing, the police added.

The police shifted the three victims to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where two of them died during treatment.

Malir City SHO Ismail Lashari said the victim, Hafeez, was a resident of Kalakot.

The maimed man was identified as Rashid, son of Ismail, he said, adding that he was under treatment at the hospital.

The police said the victims were under the influence of drugs when the fight broke out. Following the medico-legal formalities at the JPMC, the body of the victim was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

KSA gives Egypt $2 billion to prop up economy
Saudi Arabia yesterday agreed to give an initial loan package worth nearly $ 2 billion to support Egypt's economy. It has transferred $ 1 billion to Egypt's central bank as an eight-year deposit,
Literally money in the bank. I'm not sure I can handle that thought...
Faiza Abu El-Naga, the Egyptian minister for planning and international cooperation, said yesterday.
That'll fix the balance of payments for a couple months...
"Saudi Arabia is implementing its financial package for Egypt, which will go a long way in helping the battered economy," said El-Naga while thanking the Kingdom for its support.

"Saudi Arabia has pumped this fund in the form of a deposit at the Central Bank of Egypt, while it also provided a $500 million loan to boost Egypt's economy," said the minister in a statement released by the Egyptian Embassy in Riyadh.

Saudi Ambassador to Cairo, Ahmed Qattan, confirmed the report saying the Kingdom signed an agreement with Egypt to provide $500 million to support its various economic sectors and $1 billion to deposit in the Egyptian Central Bank.

"The Kingdom also gave $250 million to finance gas exports from the Kingdom and $200 million to finance Egypt's small and medium enterprises," the Saudi Press Agency quoted Qattan as saying. He said Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah approved the aid to support Egypt and its economic stability.

After the political unrest, Egypt's economy has been experiencing difficult times, which prompted Cairo to urge more support from friendly countries as well as the International Monetary Fund. In fact, Egypt's foreign exchange reserves fell from $36 billion in December 2010 to only $16.3 billion in January 2012.

In February 2012, Standard & Poor's rating agency lowered Egypt's credit rating from B+ to B in the long term, which indicates turbulent times for the Egyptian economy if normalcy is not restored early and the financial institutions, including banks, do not start working more aggressively.

Asked about the aid and assistance provided by other countries, Nabeel Baker, a spokesman of the Egyptian Embassy in Riyadh, said: "The Kingdom has extended a helping hand to Egypt in times of need and in all emergency situations." Riyadh is set to send Egypt billions of dollars in aid, including the $1 billion that has already been disbursed. "The Saudi aid package demonstrates the good relations between the two countries," he added.

The Kingdom and Egypt are highly influential countries in the Arab world. Egypt, which is also negotiating a $3.2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, has been seeking funds from international donors to help it plug a balance of payment deficits aggravated by the political and economic turmoil of the last 15 months, said Baker. Saudi Arabia is committed to provide Egypt with up to $2.7 billion in financial aid.
I had wondered why the predicted melt-down of Egypt was delayed.
"Saudi Arabia has supported Egypt's economy before by sending $500 million," said Minister of Finance Ibrahim Al-Assaf while speaking during a conference for finance ministers of Gulf states in the Saudi capital last week. Saudi Arabia announced in April that it would deposit $1 billion in Egypt's central bank and buy treasury bonds worth $750 million as part of a $2.7 billion package to support Egypt's battered finances.
Better they give their excess funds to Egypt than to jihadis...

Pakistan not 'complicit' of sheltering bin Laden, says Gilani
[Dawn] Pakistain's Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
has rejected claims that Pakistain had secretly known the late Osama bin Laden
Osama bin Laden is dead.
He took two shots to the head.
That made him frown
and he had to lie down.
Osama bin Laden is dead.

was living in the garrison city of Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....

"There is no complicity," said the Pak premier in an interview to the daily Guardian. "Why should we do that? We have suffered the most," he added, refuting suggestions that the country's armed forces may have known of the former al Qaeda leader's presence.

"I think it's an intelligence failure from all over the world," said Gilani, who is currently in London on a five-day visit.

Gilani argued that Pakistain is "part of the solution, not part of the problem" in the "global issue" of fighting terrorism.

"Pakistain has paid a huge price. Some 35,000 people have been martyred. 5,000 police and soldiers have been killed."

Gilani is scheduled to meet British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
on Thursday.

Earlier this week, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Daniel Webster ...
had said the US believes Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
, the al Qaeda chief after Bin Laden's death, was hiding "somewhere in Pakistain", pushing Islamabad to "do more" in the war on terrorism.

However,
some men learn by reading. A few learn by observation. The rest have to pee on the electric fence for themselves...
Gilani refuted the allegations, claiming he didn't know whether al-Zawahiri was in Pakistain. "If there is any credible information, please share it with us, so we can be quick and achieve our targets," he said.

Bangladesh
NBC footage doctored, says defence
[Bangla Daily Star] During cross-examination of a witness, the defence of Sayeedi said footage presented as evidence had no relevance to the case against the Jamaat nayeb-e-ameer and that it was submitted only to stir emotions.

Mizanul Islam, a defence counsel of Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami...
at the International Crimes Tribunal-1, said the footage from the US broadcaster NBC's 1972 news report was heavily edited and distorted.

In response, witness Mohammad Helal Uddin, who is the investigation officer of the case and the 28th and last prosecution witness, said it was not true. Helal had provided the court with the footage.

Helal, during his testimony, had also presented footage of US broadcaster CBS's news report as evidence against the Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
leader who is facing 20 specific charges of crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the Liberation War.

The three-member tribunal of Justice Md Nizamul Huq, Justice Md Anwarul Haque and AKM Zaheer Ahmed yesterday recorded the cross-examination of the witness for the sixth day yesterday.

The NBC and CBS footage from 1972 gave an account of the atrocities committed in Bangladesh during the Liberation War.

Helal yesterday said the CBS news report did not mention anything about Sayeedi or about Pirojpur district where the Jamaat leader had allegedly committed the crimes. He went on to add that atrocities were committed all over the country and some of those atrocities were described in the CBS report.

"Sayeedi committed similar crimes. I investigated those crimes and submitted a report accordingly," he had said but the tribunal omitted his answer from the proceedings as it was irrelevant.

In reply to other questions, the investigation officer admitted that he did not know where CBS was based in and that he did not try to contact the journalists who produced the report.

Helal said the CBS report was collected in the same way the NBC report was collected, meaning the foreign ministry provided the investigation agency with the reports.

He, however, said he did not know how the two reports of the two channels came to be in the same video file that the investigator submitted as exhibit before the tribunal.

The investigation officer also faced questions on other exhibits he had presented before the court during his testimony.

The questions were related to an ATN Bangla documentary on the atrocities committed in the country in 1971 and ETV footage on Sayeedi's involvements in the atrocities.

The cross-examination would resume on May 13.

Sayeedi was produced before the court yesterday. The nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami is among three Jamaat and a BNP leader facing such charges at the tribunal-1.

Two SA hostages in Somalia still alive
(Sh.M.Network)- -- The families of a South African couple taken hostage by pirates in Somalia 19 months ago have received confirmation they are still alive, Beeld reported on Thursday.
While there's life, there's hope.
Vera Hecht, sister of Bruno Pelizzari, who is being held hostage with his girlfriend Debbie Calitz, recently sent the pirates a list of questions to which only her brother would know the answers.

"That's all we know: they're alive, but we don't know what condition they're in, or where they're being held," Hecht was quoted saying.

The couple have been passed between different groups a few times.

"The bad news is that the man with whom we've negotiated up until now has been replaced, with a more radical negotiator. He turned down our last ransom offer," she said.

The pirates initially demanded US4 million. The family had thus far only collected a fraction of that amount.

Calitz and Pelizzari were taken hostage on October 26, 2010 on a yacht in the Mozambique channel.

Lawyers thrash yet another cop
[Dawn] Yet another official, this time an assistant sub-inspector of police, falls a victim to lawyers' violence on court premises on Wednesday.

Advocate Abdul Rasheed and his associates attacked ASI Zohaib Awan and beat him up like anything on the session court premises.

Awan had come to the court to produce record of a case registered against a lawyer at Green Town cop shoppe.

The lawyers used kicks and fists to beat the policeman black and blue and also tore his uniform.

Many lawyers, litigants and police officials present on the occasion remained silent spectators as black coats vent their anger on the on-duty policeman.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village our hero was receiving a quick lesson in aeronautics......
Lahore Bar Association representatives reached the spot and took both attackers and the victim to committee room. Though bar leaders tried their best to convince Awan to reconcile with the attackers, the ASI could not be placated.

Later, the ASI left the scene along with some coppers who had reached there by then.

On the complaint of Zohaib Awan, Islampura police started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Advocate Rasheed and many other lawyers.

Home Front: WoT
Loose Lips Sink Ships
Max Boot

Remember the World War II slogan, "Loose lips sink ships"? Perhaps those posters should be reprinted and spread around the most classified departments of the U.S. government because our soldiers and spooks just can't seem to keep their lips sealed--at least not when they have a triumph to brag about.

The first case in point was of course Operation Neptune Spear, which killed Osama bin Laden. Details of how it was done, and of the resulting intelligence cache, were soon spread all over the news, notwithstanding an agreement among senior administration officials to keep the operation secret. More details have been gushing out in recent days--with still more to come--as President Obama uses this Special Operations Command triumph to bolster his reelection chances, never mind the palpable unease in Special Operations circles about the damage being done from the revelation of their "TTPs" (tactics, techniques, and procedures).

Now something similar is occurring with all the publicity resulting from an Associated Press leak about the double-agent who blew up the al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula plot to blow up a U.S. airliner with a more sophisticated form of "underwear bomb." No doubt Saudi intelligence officials who ran the double agent and provided information to the CIA are aghast to see the details splashed across front pages.

In fairness, there is a case to be made that having al-Qaeda fear penetration by double agents could actually be beneficial. It could lead to terrorist paranoia and fratricide that could prove harmful to its ability to carry out operations. But in general, secrecy is always to be preferred in the covert world of counter-terrorism. Without it, covert techniques are blown and foreign intelligence agencies, whose cooperation is vital to the U.S., become more reluctant to extend cooperation. Yet for some reason, those with top-level TS/SCI security clearances (top secret/sensitive compartmented information) can't resist bragging about their exploits to the news media.

One hopes the administration will make every attempt to uncover and prosecute the leakers rather than looking the other way because these leaks are so politically convenient for the president.

#1  At the DoD level, you can appropriately pin the Operational Security (OPSEC) failure rose on SECDEF Leon Penetta and the fella who appointed him. OPSEC is not rocket science and numerous regulations at various levels across the intelligence community cover security procedures quite well. Problems arise when, like nearly everything else, you fail to enforce the standards.

#3  Someone(s) need to go to jail, that is for sure, because I'm sure MI6 and CIA didn't officially release this for public consumption.

As far as actual damage is concerned, I don't think it's much. I'm sure Al-Qaeda figured out that they'd been had five minutes after the guy didn't show up for his martyr video. I doubt any TTP beyond what AlQ could figure out for themselves regarding the penetration have been revealed.

The thing that bugs me the most is that they can't keep a secret. What if it were something bigger?

Were any TTPs revealed that would be harmful to our side? Like how we observed them, held off on airstrikes, etc.?

North Korea to Bolster Nuclear Deterrent at Any Cost
[An Nahar] North Korea said Thursday it would strengthen its nuclear deterrent and other defenses regardless of cost, amid fears it is preparing for another atomic weapons test.

"No matter what high expense the army and people of the DPRK (North Korea) have to cover, they will further bolster its defense capability including nuclear deterrence to firmly protect its dignity and illusory sovereignty," said a state body known as the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea.

The committee, in comments on the official news agency, vowed not to be deceived by offers from hostile forces that it could get benefits in return for abandoning nuclear weapons and suspending missile launches.

It was the second such pledge in five days.
Pudgy is feeling feisty.
On Sunday a foreign ministry front man condemned a statement by the five permanent U.N. Security Council members which urged Pyongyang to refrain from nuclear tests or other actions that could spark security concerns.

The North would safeguard the nation "based on self-defensive nuclear deterrent" and strongly pursue peaceful space development, the front man said.

There has been widespread speculation the North could stage its third nuclear test following a failed rocket launch on April 13 that sparked international criticism.

Satellite photos have shown work in progress at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

The North said its launch was intended to put a peaceful satellite into orbit. The United States and its allies said the exercise was a pretext for a ballistic missile test banned under U.N. resolutions.

Preparations to storm Al-Qaeda-controlled town
[Yemen Post] Minister of Defense, Major General Mohammad Nasser Ahmed, along with Aden governor Waheed Ali Rasheed have reviewed combat readiness of military units as they visited on Wednesday a number of military and security units in Aden.

Media sources stated that preparations are ongoing to carry out military storm against Zinjibar town controlled by Al-Qaeda a year ago.

According to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) Defense Minister visited Badr camp on Wednesday, pointing out that the minister was received by the commander of the Southern Military Region Salem Ali Qatan who briefed him on the combat readiness of the camp's military units.

In an interview with an English-speaking newspaper, Mohsin revealed that Saleh directed 25 percent of the armed forces' budget to go to the Republican Guard.

He said the purchase of weapons does not go through the Defense Ministry, pointing out that private deals are performed without the knowledge of the Defense Ministry.

"The daily food ration for each soldier in the Republican Guard is 150 grams per day, while the soldier's ration in any other military unit is only 75 grams" he added.

An unidentified Mexican Army lieutenant colonel was found shot to death in the sierras of Santiago Papasquiaro Wednesday morning, according to a news item on the website of El Siglo de Durango Thursday evening.

The victim was tentatively identified as Lt. Colonel Felipe Villalobos, said to be a member of Mexico's elite Grupo Aeromovil de Fuerzas Especiales (GAFE) special forces group. Reports say the local municipal government have already declared their incompetence in the case, kicking it over to military jurisdiction. The declaration is pro forma since no civilians are presumably involved in the shooting.

The report also said that another unidentified soldier was being investigated for his role in the death of the colonel.

According to a post on the website of El Contexto de Durango news daily, six individuals including two women, said to be affiliated with Los Zetas criminal group, were detained at a traffic stop in Santiago Papasquiaro Thursday in the Las Quebradas region.

Durango state police agents from at least two separate agencies stopped six individuals travelling aboard a Chevrolet Malibu sedan on Bulevar Armando del Castillo Franco in CNOP colony. The driver of the vehicle attempted to initiate a pursuit, but was stopped

The victim was found in the village of Ignacio Zaragoza in Coneto de Comonfort municipality. The victim was shot as many as four times with an AR-15 rifle.

  • The Durango Fiscalia General de Estado said that two men who disappeared April 29th and were later found dead near Guadalupe Victoria dam April 30th have been identified. Mateo Mancinas Gonzalez, 24, and Jorge Luis Mancinas Guerrero, 22, were both from Buenavista colony in the village of El Salto in Pueblo Nuevo municipality.

The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues...

It further quoted well-informed source as saying that Hadi refuses dialogue with al-Qaeda and all other terrorist groups, stressing that the president is determined to pursue the terrorist organization and eradicate it through all possible means.

The source affirmd that Hadi will deal with al-Qaeda via laws, military and security settlement, pointing out that the terrorist groups do not know dialogue.

"Terrorist groups committed crimes against troops, citizens and foreigners who come to visit Yemen" it added.

Al-Qaeda gunnies took control a year ago on Abyan and some areas of Shabwa as they exploited turbulences that hit Yemen in 2011 and that led to the outset of the former president Ali Saleh.

Western countries including the United Sates support efforts of Yemen's president to defeat Al-Qaeda.

Media sources said the Yemeni army prepares to launch large-scale attack to cleanse areas controlled by Al-Qaeda in Abyan.

Hadi had vowed in address delivered before Yemeni officers and troops last week that he will defeat Al-Qaeda.

However,
a poor excuse is better than no excuse at all...
Al-Qaeda attacked hours after the address a military position in Abyan, killed and captured dozens of the Yemeni troops.

Egypt seizes weapons cache, arrests smugglers
CAIRO: Egyptian security forces have seized 40 surface-to-surface missiles and other heavy weapons being smuggled along the northern coastal highway from Libya by a group from the Sinai Peninsula, state media reported on Thursday.

The arms had been seized on the road between Marsa Matrouh and Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, state media reported. The smugglers had confessed to bringing the weapons to the country to sell them on to dealers, the state news agency MENA said. There was no word on the source of the weapons.

Israeli officials said last year that Libya, which borders Egypt to the west, had become a major source of weapons being smuggled into the Sinai Peninsula, which borders both Israel and the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. The MENA news agency said the cache included mortars and heavy ammunition.

Syrian Troops Kidnap Citizen in Akkar
[An Nahar] Syrian troops crossed over into Leb Wednesday night and kidnapped a Lebanese citizen, reported the daily al-Mustaqbal
... the Future Movement, political party led by Saad Hariri...
on Thursday.

It said that Syrian border guards crossed the Kabir River near the town of al-Abboudiyeh in Akkar and kidnapped Mohammed Mahmoud Ibrahim.

He has since been taken to Syrian territory.

Tensions have mounted in the town over al-Ibrahim's fate and its residents have issued calls for his release.

Members of his family have since blocked in protest the international road leading to Syria at al-Abboudiyeh, reported the National News Agency.

They threatened to maintain the protest and escalate their action until the abductee is freed.

They demanded that the Lebanese authorities intervene to stop what they called "Syria's repeated violations" against Leb.

Massive blasts in Syrian city claim 55 lives
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Two jacket wallahs killed at least 55 people and maimed nearly 400 in the Syrian capital Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
today, authorities said, in the deadliest attacks of the country's 14-month uprising.

The blasts during the morning rush hour left an apocalyptic scene of destruction and further put into question a UN-backed ceasefire that has failed to take hold since it went into effect on April 12.

UN-Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
envoy Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
, who brokered the truce, strongly condemned the bombings as the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
and the opposition accused each other of being responsible.

Russia and China, both supporters of Assad's embattled regime, called for a stop to the violence and urged all parties in Syria to cooperate with Annan's peace plan.

State television aired gruesome footage of the aftermath of the twin kabooms in the neighbourhood of Qazzaz, blaming "terrorists", the term used by authorities to refer to rebels seeking to topple Assad's regime.

The television showed images of a woman's charred hand on a steering wheel, her gold bracelets dangling from her blackened wrist.

Other burnt and mangled bodies lay in the street amid the carcasses of smouldering vehicles and rubble.

"Is that the freedom you want? Students from schools and employees going to work are dead," shouted one man in the middle of the destruction.

The kabooms took place on a main freeway in the south of Damascus, in front of a nine-storey security complex whose facade was heavily damaged while nearby residential buildings collapsed.

The interior ministry said the suicide kaboomers used a tonne of explosives, killing at least 55 people and wounding 372.

It added that emergency workers filled 15 bags with body parts of others who died, and that the blasts also destroyed around 200 cars.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britannia-based monitoring group, said the bombings targeted an intelligence base and killed 59 people, including civilians and security personnel.

The attacks came a day after UN observers monitoring the ceasefire escaped unharmed when a roadside kaboom went kaboom! as they were visiting the flashpoint southern city of Daraa. Ten Syrian troops escorting them were hurt.

"This is yet another example of the suffering brought upon the people of Syria," said Major General Robert Mood, chief of a UN observer mission, who visited the site of the kabooms.

"We, the world community, are here with the Syrian people and I call on everyone within and outside Syria to help stop this violence," he added.

In Geneva, Annan said through his front man Ahmad Fawzi that he "condemns in the strongest possible terms the attacks that took place earlier today in Damascus."

"Any action that serves to escalate tensions and raise the level of violence can only be counter-productive to the interests of all parties," he added.

Syria Says Damascus Attacks Staged by 'Terrorists' Funded Abroad
[An Nahar] Syria said Thursday's suicide kabooms that killed at least 55 people and maimed hundreds was the work of "terrorists" armed and funded by foreign organizations and media.

The foreign ministry made the accusation in a letter to U.N. Secretary General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon

hours after the deadliest bombing attacks of the country's 14-month uprising, which also maimed nearly 400 people in Damascus

"These crimes show that Syria is targeted by a terrorist attack launched by organizations armed and funded by parties who proclaim their backing to terrorist crimes," state-run SANA news agency quoted the message as saying.

It also accused unnamed "media that incite violence of being behind these terrorist crimes."

These media ask rebels "to commit crimes by offering them in exchange media coverage" of their fight against the regime," the message said.

The ministry also said that "300 soldiers and members of the security forces have been killed by armed terrorist groups since April 12," when a putative ceasefire technically went into effect.

China-Japan-Koreas
China Suicide Bomber Kills Two in Protest
[An Nahar] A woman blew herself up on Thursday to protest the demolition of her house in southwest China, killing two people and injuring 14, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The woman, who also was struck down in his prime, was at a local government office in Yunnan province negotiating compensation for the loss of her home when she detonated explosives attached to her body, Xinhua said.

"We have opened an investigation. I can't tell you anything, but three people were killed and 14 were maimed," said an official reached by telephone at the local government office, who refused to give his name.

"Of those (injured), four were badly hurt and are now on their way to hospital in Kunming," he added, referring to the capital of Yunnan.

A witness told Xinhua the woman blew herself up after she was asked to sign documents relating to compensation, and was killed immediately.

No further details about the dispute were immediately available, but government land grabs and forced relocations frequently trigger violent protests in China by desperate citizens who feel their rights are being trampled.

Last year, a suicide kaboom by a jobless man angry over a land dispute left two civilians dead in the eastern city of Fuzhou.

Qian Mingqi, who was 52, lost his home in 1995 to make way for a highway, and then had a second home demolished in 2001 to make way for the same highway, according to reports published at the time.

"For the past 10 years, I have suffered a great injustice. I cannot find justice. I was forced to go down a road I didn't want to take," the bomber wrote on his microblog account.

"I will get justice myself, through concrete action."

Also last year, more than 40 people were maimed when a disgruntled former employee set off a petrol bomb at a bank in the northwestern province of Gansu, in protest over being laid off.

And in September 2010, three people set themselves on fire in Fuzhou over a land dispute. One died.

Wronged Chinese queue up in Beijing or picturesque provincial capitals to petition authorities over injustices, but many complain of official unresponsiveness to their concerns.

can impose its will on Sudan, President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.
said today, after fresh fighting along the border with South Sudan.

"We will implement what we want and, what we do not want, no one can impose upon us -- neither the UN Security Council nor the African Union Peace and Security Council," Bashir said.

He was referring to a May 2 UN Security Council resolution calling for Sudan and South Sudan to cease hostilities along their border, and resume talks to settle unresolved issues.

A South Sudanese cabinet minister said on Thursday his country was ready for talks at any time.

President Bashir's remarks were his first about the resolution, and came a day after Sudan's army said it had fought with South Sudan along the disputed border on Wednesday, while the South said it came under renewed Sudanese air attack, violating a four-day-old UN-imposed ceasefire.

The UN resolution also ordered Sudan and South Sudan to pull troops back from their disputed frontier, effective Wednesday May 9, but Khartoum said it could not comply until there was a border agreement.

President Bashir made his comments in an address to about 1,000 oil industry workers marking the "liberation" last month of Sudan's main oil region of Heglig, which South Sudan occupied for 10 days in a move coinciding with waves of Sudanese air raids against the South, leading to fears of a wider war.

Khartoum's foreign ministry has said it is committed to stopping hostilities under the UN resolution, but it also has certain reservations "which may create some difficulties in fully implementing" it.

The South's government also pledged to seek peace after the UN threatened sanctions if both sides did not stop border fighting by last Friday evening to avert "a serious threat to international peace and security."

On Wednesday, the army in Khartoum said it had expelled South Sudanese troops and their rebel allies from two areas, Kafindibei and Kafia Kingi, in South Darfur state across from the South's Western Bahr el-Ghazal state.

Sudan's foreign ministry has described Kafindibei and Kafia Kingi as disputed.

Earlier on Wednesday, Southern army front man Kella Kueth said Sudan had been "randomly bombarding civilian areas," in Southern border states on Monday and Tuesday.

Sudan has repeatedly denied bombing the South. South Sudan's army confirmed, however, that Kafindibei had been captured by Sudanese troops backed by air support on Monday.

The incident is the first confirmed violation after the cessation of hostilities took effect.

While Khartoum announced last week that it would honour the ceasefire, it accused South Sudan of continuing aggression by occupying disputed points along the border and warned that if they did not withdraw, they would be forced out in an act of self-defence.

Teachers manhandled for not allowing cheating in exam
[Dawn] The HSC annual examination's paper of Commercial Geography-II could not be held at the Government National College on Wednesday as college teachers boycotted the exam duties in protest against severe manhandling of teachers and the ransacking of college property by a mob of outsiders.

Sources in the college said that a number of outsiders, who had been threatening the staff of dire consequences for not allowing their associates to cheat during the examination, managed to enter the college premises after the first sitting of the examination on Wednesday.

After the first session, the presence of police was negligible and political groups of outsiders ransacked the college properties and beaten up a couple of senior teachers when they refused to allow them cheating.

"The intruders were so harsh that they even did not hesitate to misbehave with our principal and torn apart his clothes too," said a teacher.

Reacting to the ugly incident, the teachers of the National College refused to perform the examination duty any further and consequently the examination could not be held in the evening shift there.

Taking note of the situation, the Sindh Professors and Lecturers' Association held an emergency meeting with Prof Athar Mirza in the chair and condemned the incident.

The association said that it was the failure on part of the college directorate and the law-enforcement agencies that unscrupulous elements had now started demanding for cheating facilities so openly and were giving threats to the lives of teachers and other college staffs.

The association had also announced that the teachers' community would boycott the ongoing HSC annual examination from Thursday onwards at all the BIEK examination centres.

However, following a late-night meeting with Karachi Commissioner Roshan Ali Sheikh, the SPLA reversed its decision and decided to report for examination works as usual on Thursday.

A BIEK communication said that following assurance given by the commissioner that the culprits who manhandled the college teachers and tortured Prof Waseem Adil and Prof M Asim Owais would be arrested the association had agreed to withdraw its boycott call.

The commissioner said that more deployment of law-enforcing agency personnel at the examination centres would be ensured, it added.

On the other hand, the teachers of the National College decided to hold their general body meeting on Thursday to review the situation and decide further action.

#1  When in College at test time I was amazed at the foreign male students pressure to secure test answers. They never got caught but I never gave them any answers either. Sounds like some can bribe their way in some of these countries. I have seen it in business. Actually it seems to be how they do everything. The money just disappears.
