Seized Chinese Weapons Raise Concerns on Iran
Axes of Evil combined forces. Surprised?
An Iranian dhow seized off the Yemeni coast was carrying sophisticated Chinese antiaircraft missiles, a development that could signal an escalation of IranÂ’s support to its Middle Eastern proxies, alarming other countries in the region and renewing a diplomatic challenge to the United States.
"oops"
Among the items aboard the dhow, according to a review of factory markings on weapons and their packing crates, were 10 Chinese heat-seeking antiaircraft missiles, most of them manufactured in 2005.
"when was that embargo?"
The missiles were labeled QW-1M and bore stencils suggesting that they had been assembled at a factory represented by the state-owned China National Precision Machinery Import and Export Corporation, sanctioned by the United States for transfers of missile technology to Pakistan and Iran.
two "partners in peace", right John F'n Kerry?
The Chinese missiles were part of a larger shipment interdicted by American and Yemeni forces in January, which American and Yemeni officials say was intended for the Houthi rebels in northwestern Yemen. But the presence of the missiles in the seized contraband complicates an already politically delicate case.

The shipment, which officials portray as an attempt to introduce sophisticated new antiaircraft systems into the Arabian Peninsula, has raised concerns in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen, as the weapons would have posed escalated risks to civilian and military aircraft alike.
perhaps the MEK needs the same?
And it has presented the Obama administration with a fresh example of IranÂ’s apparent transfer of modern missiles from China to insurgents in the larger regional contest between Sunni-led and Shiite-led states, in which the American military has often been entwined.
Not with Chuck "friend of the Mullahs" Hagel at DOD, and John F'n "tool of our enemies" Kerry in charge

Afghanistan
Pakistani clerics endorse suicide bombings, reject proposed peace conference
The tortuous path of the Afghan government's plan for a regional ulema conference that would issue a fatwa condemning suicide attacks reached a new impasse yesterday when the head of Pakistan's ulema council stated that suicide attacks are permissible. The proposed conference, originally put forward by Afghanistan's High Peace Council, was agreed to by Pakistan in November, and then hit a series of snags as it was condemned by the Taliban in late December and early January.

The conference, which had been scheduled for January, was postponed; its agenda grew murky, the venue changed from Kabul to various other locations, and its fate became uncertain. It has been termed variously a "peace conference" and a conference on the issue of suicide bombings.

In an interesting twist, last month the Taliban changed their stance from condemning the proposed conference to demanding to take part in it. Reports suggested that Pakistan's position on the proposed conference mirrored that of the Taliban, which remained steadfastly opposed to a gathering that would potentially outlaw the tactic of suicide bombing. [See LWJ report, Karzai presses for fatwa on suicide attacks.]

Afghan officials have resisted the Taliban's demand to be included in the conference, suspecting no doubt that the Taliban would subvert the original goal of obtaining a fatwa against suicide bombings, and the event has appeared to be destined for limbo. Meetings between Afghan and Pakistani religious scholars on the proposed conference have reflected division between the two groups, and as of a few weeks ago they had apparently agreed only to hold a joint conference in March on the issue of attacks on civilians, according to Xinhua.

Chad says soldiers in Mali kill al Qaeda's Belmokhtar
Chadian soldiers in Mali have killed Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the al Qaeda commander behind a bloody mass hostage-taking at an Algerian gas plant in January, Chad's military said on Saturday.

His death would be a major blow to Islamist rebels in northern Mali who have been pushed into their mountain strongholds by French and African forces.

"On Saturday, March 2, at noon, Chadian armed forces operating in northern Mali completely destroyed a terrorist base (...) The toll included several dead terrorists, including their leader Mokhtar Belmokhtar," Chadian armed forces spokesman General Zacharia Gobongue said in a statement read on national television.

Belmokhtar claimed responsibility for the seizure of dozens of foreign hostages at the In Amenas gas plant in Algeria in January in which more than 60 people were killed.

The report of his death comes days after Chad's President Idriss Deby said soldiers in Mali had killed another leading al Qaeda commander in the Sahara, Adelhamid Abou Zeid.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Obama's cosmic 'Jedi mind-meld' blunder
[News24] President Barack Obama couldn't bring two battling political parties together to forestall steep budget cuts on Friday, but he did manage a feat of more cosmic proportions.
His midiclorians were acting up.
The president brought two universes together, and he did it by boldly going where no politician should ever go: confusing Star Wars and Star Trek.
"Dammit, Jim! I'm a president, not a dictator!"
Obama's mixing of science-fiction metaphors crossed a final frontier, setting the nerdiest corners of the Internet ablaze.
"A tempest in a teapot it is!"
The president was answering reporters' questions on Friday in the White House briefing room, shortly after a last-minute meeting with the Democratic and Republican leaders of the House of Representatives and Senate.
"Aye. The haggis is in the fire for sure!"
The meeting failed to ward off automatic budget cuts that will begin carving $85bn of government spending by day's end.
"Help me, Obi-Wan! You're our only hope!"
Obama rejected the idea of using burly Secret Service agents to keep lawmakers from leaving until everyone agreed on a budget.
"Luke! Luke! I am your grandfather!"
"I am not a dictator. I'm the president," he said, explaining that he wouldn't do a "Jedi mind meld" with Congress' top two Republicans to persuade them "to do what's right."
"May the farce be with you!"

Home Front: Culture Wars
NH Gun Store Depicts Obama As 'Firearms Salesman Of The Year'
One of the posters in the front window of a New Hampshire gun shop depicts President Obama as "Firearms Salesman of the Year." Below the president are two AK-47 rifles.

A second poster featuring the images of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Mao Zedong accompanies a statement that reads, "All Experts Agree, Gun Control Works."

The signs are in the front window of Collectable Arms & Ammo in Merrimack. Store Co-owner Keith Cox makes no apologies for the storefront that has irritated some neighbors.

Cox says he is sending two separate messages and is not connecting Obama to the dictators.

He says Obama's picture is meant to thank him for sending gun sales surging with all the talk in Washington about gun control. As for the images of the three dictators, Cox says his message is that people armed with guns are better able to protect themselves against tyranny.

"We like to have the creative storefronts which are sort of fun in one aspect and in another aspect if we have an opportunity to make a statement we'll do that as well," said Cox.

Chuck Mower, who lives down the street from the shop, says he understands free speech, but says the message is over the top and unnecessary.

"I can't even imagine any president's picture being portrayed on the front of a business with crossed assault weapons underneath it," Mower said. "When those kinds of things appear and take the public presence...they paint us more as a gooberville in Arkansas."

Mower, a longtime Merrimack resident, has filed a complaint with the city.
And there's the problem right there. He says he understands 'free speech' and then files a complaint. Apparently he doesn't understand free speech as well as he claims...
"It's not a good community standard message and it doesn't add to solving any of the complicated issues," he said.

Outside the store on Friday, there was curiosity about the controversy.

"If people want to show it then so be it, it's their freedom of rights," said one Merrimack resident.

"One thing great about this country is you can agree to disagree, but to take these extremes I think it's shameful and I'm sad to say it's the town I live in," said another resident.

Regardless of the controversy, the signage is not coming down.

"I certainly would not ask them to change a flag hanging on their homes or a sign in their yards because I am offended by it or disagree with it," said Cox. "I will support anybody's freedom of speech."

Town officials in Merrimack tell WBZ-TV the storefront is not breaking any town ordinances.

I dunno about this. Barak "I am not a dictatior" Obama seems to be doing a pretty fair job of that himself.

Merrimack, just down the road a piece, suffers from the same disease as much of southern NH, an uncontrolled influx of Massholes who are trying to escape the carnage they have caused in MA...and are now trying to reproduce in NH.

Obama signs sequester order, blames Republicans over budget impasse
[WASHINGTONTIMES] resident Obama signed an order Friday night to begin automatic budget cuts across most federal departments.

The White House released a copy of the order at 8:31 p.m. Friday, directing federal agencies to reduce spending in various accounts by percentages calculated by the Office on Management and Budget.

After failing to reach a deal with congressional leaders to avoid $85 billion in automatic "sequester" budget cuts, President Obama on Friday blamed the crisis squarely on Republican lawmakers.

"They've allowed these cuts to happen because they refuse to budge on closing a single wasteful loophole to help reduce the deficit," Mr. Obama said at the White House after a Friday morning meeting with top congressional Republicans and Democrats that broke no new ground. "Many middle-class families will have their lives disrupted in significant ways."

But neither side showed any signs of yielding Friday, and Republicans said the reason for the impasse is Mr. Obama's insistence on more tax increases.

Situation in Detroit delcared an "emergecy".
While a state appointed non-machine emergency manager would have the power to cut spending by consolidating city services, privatizing services and assets, and canceling contracts, he or she could also declare the city bankrupt.
Could be a model for the White House and the national level. Stand-by for further instructions Willard.

Finnish police find 'Jew list' at neo-Nazi's home
No worries. It's not as though neo-Nazis and jiadis are ever friends...
[Jpost] Finnish police have informed several members of the country's Jewish community that a neo-Nazi activist has been gathering information about them.

Police sent a letter to an undisclosed number of individuals after finding details about Finnish Jews on a USB stick in the possession of a man arrested two months ago, according a report Friday in the Israeli daily Ma'ariv.

The man was taken into custody in connection with a stabbing that took place at the library of Jyvaskyla, a city 170 miles north of Helsinki, the Finnish capital. When police searched his apartment they found the USB stick containing a folder named "Jews." It contained 300 photos and information, mostly about teenagers.

The name of the suspect was not disclosed as it is subject to a gag order. Finnish Jews have been instructed to exercise caution in revealing information about the events on Facebook and other social networks.

Manouba salafists prevent 'Harlem Shake'
[MAGHAREBIA] Tunisian salafists prevented fellow Manouba University students from performing internet dance craze "Harlem Shake" on Thursday (February 28th), Tunisie Numerique reported. Police were forced to intervene after the clash turned violent.

Since a weeks-long protest last year against the university's niqab ban, the suburban Tunis campus has seen several altercations between secular and Islamist students.

Meanwhile,
...back at the cheese factory, all the pieces finally fell together in Fluffy's mind...
a mass "Harlem Shake" in front of the education ministry is staged for Friday. The move comes in response to the probe ordered by Education Minister Abdellatif Abid into the Tunis "Harlem Shake" video made by students in the Menzah 6 neighbourhood.

Rolling Stones add second Jerusalem concert in response to BDS pressure
(JNS.org) Legendary rock band The Rolling Stones has announced it will not cancel its planned concert in Jerusalem, to be held on IsraelÂ’s Independence Day April 15, despite pressure from anti-Zionist groups. Instead, the band decided to add a second Jerusalem concert the next day.

“We’ve been slammed and smacked and twittered a lot by the anti-Israeli side. All I can say is: anything worth doing is worth overdoing. So we decided to add a concert on Tuesday,” said Mick Jagger, the band’s lead singer, according to the Jewish Press.

Although BDS proponent Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb called the band’s decision “a huge mistake” and said “they stand to lose a lot of money as a result of showing solidarity with Zionism, because their most devoted fans also support boycotting Israel,” Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood still plan to arrive in Jerusalem prior to their concerts to meet Israeli President Shimon Peres.

“When ‘Get Off of My Cloud’ came out, Dayan brought me the single from London. We played it for hours in the office until Paula Ben Gurion threatened to throw us out,” Peres told Haaretz. Tickets to both concerts have already sold out.

Venezuela: Hugo's not dead, just resting
[REUTERS] Senior aides and relatives of Venezuela's Hugo Chavez countered on Friday a crescendo of rumors that the socialist president may be dead from cancer, saying he was still battling for his life.

"There he is, continuing his fight, his battle, and we are sure of victory!" his brother Adan Chavez, the governor of Barinas state, told cheering supporters during an event.

Speculation about Chavez, 58, has reached fever pitch this week, fed in part by assertions from Panama's former ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Guillermo Cochez, that the Venezuelan leader had died.

South African police charged with murder over taxi driver's dragging
[ABC.NET.AU] Eight South African coppers have been charged with the murder of a taxi driver who was bashed, tied to the back of a van and dragged along the road in Johannesburg.

Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia, 27, was found dead in detention with signs of head injuries and internal bleeding, according to an initial post-mortem report released by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The video-recorded treatment of the Mozambican taxi driver has further damaged the reputation of the police force in South Africa, where more than 1,200 people a year die in jug.

"They will answer to a charge of murder when they appear in court on Monday," Moses Dlamini, front man for the IPID, told Rooters.

The video of Tuesday's incident shows Macia scuffling with police, who subdue him.

He is then bound by his arms to the back of a van before the vehicle drives off in front of scores of witnesses in the east Johannesburg area of Daveyton.

"We would like to assure the country and the world that what is in the video is not how the South African Police Service in a democratic South Africa goes about its work," Commissioner Riah Phiyega told a news conference.

U.N. 'Deeply Concerned' for Safety of Iran Exiles in Iraq
[An Nahar] The U.N.'s refugee agency voiced "deep concern" Friday for the security of Iranian opposition members at a camp in Iraq, which is facing new threats of attack after a recent assault killed seven people.

"This population is entitled to international protection according to international law," the agency said in a statement.

On February 9, mortar rounds and rockets slammed into Camp Liberty, a former U.S. military base near Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
that now houses some 3,000 members of the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, killing seven people and injuring dozens more.

The camp had received more threats since then, UNHCR said, stressing its "deep concern about the safety" of the camp residents.

"The UNHCR strongly calls on all countries to redouble their efforts to find humanitarian solutions for this population outside Iraq," it said, also urging Storied Baghdad "to do everything possible in the meantime to guarantee a safe and secure environment for this population."

The Mujahedeen was founded in the 1960s to oppose the shah of Iran, and after the 1979 Islamic revolution that ousted him it took up arms against Iran's holy manal rulers.

Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein gave the group a safe haven, but after he was tossed in the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, the group faced antipathy from pro-Iranian elements in Iraq.

Under a 2011 U.N.-brokered deal, the Mujahedeen were moved from their longstanding base at Camp Ashraf near the Iranian border to another site named Camp Liberty.

The goal of the transfer to Camp Liberty was to pave the way for the Mujahedeen to leave Iraq outright, with a view to resettling them in the United States and Europe.

The Mujahedeen meanwhile argue that Camp Ashraf is safer for them because the site is larger and has concrete buildings, while those at Camp Liberty are wooden.

#1  Have they started digging tunnels yet?

And what is that funny smell from the building with the windows painted black?

I am more concerned about the safety of the Iraqis with this many Iranians, probably heavily infiltrated with Quds Brigade, around. Get them sent home and things will quiet down in beautiful downtown Baghdad.

Nigeria claims killed Boko Haram commander
[CAPITALFM.CO.KE] Nigerian troops killed a suspected commander of the Islamist group Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
and three of his lieutenants during an operation in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the army said Tuesday.

"The commander and his three lieutenants bit the dust during an exchange of fire," Joint Task Force (JTF) front man Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said in a statement.

The four suspected snuffies were killed on Monday in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state and main base of the bad boy group whose insurgency is believed to have killed at least 3,000 people since 2009.

The Nigerian forces had been combing the city for Boko Haram fighters suspected of involvement in attacks that the army said killed three civilians and left six soldiers maimed last week.

Pak politician, Interior Minister under the Gilani government. Malik is a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) intelligence officer who rose to head the FIA during Benazir Bhutto's second tenure. Malik was tossed from his FIA job in 1998 after documenting the breath-taking corruption of the Sharif family. Liberals call for $10.10 minimum wage - more than Obama requested
[THEHILL] The White House is coming under pressure from liberal Democrats in the House and Senate to press for a minimum wage hike as high as $10.10.
Pikers! Go ahead and make it $20!
Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) argues President Obama "missed the mark" in calling to raise the minimum wage to $9 in his State of the Union address, and his staff met with White House staff last week to argue for a higher number.
Wotta cheapskate.
The veteran senator, who will retire at the end of this Congress, is working with Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.) on legislation that would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 over three years and then index future increases to inflation.
That'd be the snake of cause and effect gnawing at its own tail.
"Well, we're going to introduce our own bill on it," Harkin told The Hill on Tuesday. "I'm going to be in discussions with them because I think they missed the mark, but people make mistakes."
"What's a few bucks here and there? It's only money!"
Besides Harkin and Miller -- a confidant of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) -- Democrats backing a higher minimum wage hike include Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Rep. Charles Rangel (N.Y.).

WHO, Islamic leaders summit to stop polio worker attacks
[Dawn] Top World Health Organisation officials and Islamic leaders will meet in Egypt next week in an effort to stop attacks on polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
workers, which are hampering the eradication of the virus in some countries with large Moslem populations.

"Shooting health workers who are protecting kids from this crippling disease is against the Koran and everything Islam stands for," WHO's Assistant Director-General Bruce Aylward told Rooters in Canberra said on Friday.

Gunmen in Pakistain and Nigeria have killed more than 20 health workers in the past three months in a series of attacks linked to a backlash against the immunisation programme against the crippling virus.

"Moslem leaders have been great advocates of immunisation and generally the support has always been there. In Cairo, we are meeting senior Islamic leaders to get a sense of what we can do, and ask them how can you help us," said Aylward.

four people, including two coppers, who were maimed in Thursday's violence in Gaibandha, Noakhali and Satkhira, gave up the ghost yesterday raising the corpse count to 40 in two days.

Jamaat-Shibir men have been on the rampage since Thursday when a tribunal sentenced Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Sayeedi

A few district administrations yesterday imposed a ban on gatherings to avert untoward incidents.

Yesterday, Jamaat-Shibir activists blocked highways, threw brick chips at police, vandalised vehicles and roadside shops, and removed railway sleepers disrupting rail commutation with some districts.

Following Thursday's violence, police in several districts filed cases against large numbers of Jamaat-Shibir activists.

In the capital, at least 10 people were maimed when Jamaat-Shibir men clashed with law enforcers at Malibagh.

Witnesses said around 300 activists brought out a procession in Malibagh Chowdhury Para area after Juma prayers and police fired rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse them.

The Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised around 10 vehicles.

Scientists Link Two Rats' Brains, a Continent Apart
[An Nahar] Creating a "superbrain" of connected minds, scientists on Thursday said they had enabled a rat to help a fellow rodent while the animals were a continent apart but connected through brain electrodes.
I seen dis movie! Dey're gonna take over both cities!
With electrodes imbedded in its cortex, a rat in a research institute in Natal, Brazil sent signals via the Internet to a counterpart at a university lab in Durham, North Carolina, helping the second animal to get a reward.
"The chicken heart grew!"
The exploit opens up the prospect of linking brains among animals to create an "organic computer," said Brazilian neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis.
[kathump kathump kathump]
It also helps the quest to empower patients stricken with paralysis or locked-in syndrome, he said.
"Then it got out!"
"We established a functional linkage between two brains. We created a superbrain that comprises two brains," Nicolelis said in a phone interview with Agence France Presse.
"Argh!"
Published in the journal Scientific Reports, Nicolelis' team gave basic training to thirsty rats, who had to recognize lights and operate a lever to get a reward of water.
"Then it ate Cleveland!"
They then implanted ultra-fine electrodes in the rats' brains, which were linked by a slender overhead cable to a computer.
[SLLLLLUSP!]
In a glass tank in Natal, the first rat was the "encoder," its brain sending out a stream of electrical pulses as it figured out the tricks for getting the reward.

The pulses were sent in real time into the cortex of the second rat, or "decoder," rat, which was facing identical apparatus in a tank in North Carolina.

With these prompts from its chum, the decoder rat swiftly found the reward in turn.

"The pair of animals collaborated to solve a task together," said Nicolelis.

What the second rat received were not thoughts, nor were they images, Nicolelis said.

When the encoder rat achieved various tasks, the peaks in his brain signals were transcribed into a telltale pattern of electronic signals that were received by the decoder rat.

Once the rat recognized the usefulness of these patterns, they became incorporated into its visual and tactile processing.

"The second rat learns to recognize a pattern, a statistical pattern, that describes a decision taken by the first rat. He's creating an association of that pattern with a decision," said Nicolelis.

"He may be feeling a little tactile stimulus, but it's something that we don't know how to describe because we cannot question the subject."

The linkage "suggests we could create a brain net, formed of joined-up brains, all interacting," the scientist said, hastening to stress that such experiments would only be conducted on lab animals, not humans.

"If you connect several animal brains, rat brains or primate brains, you probably could be creating an organic computer that is a non-Turing machine, a machine that doesn't work according to the Turing design of all the digital computers that we know. It would be heuristic, it wouldn't use an algorithm, and it would uses probabilistic decision-making based on organic hardware."

Still unclear is how the decoder animal incorporates the encoder's signals into its mental space, a phenomenon called cortical plasticity.

"We basically show that the decoder animal can incorporate another body as an extension of the map that the animal has in it's own brain," said Nicolelis, adding, though: "We don't know how this is done."

Algerian experts seek to curb extremism in prisons
[MAGHAREBIA] Young prison inmates are at high risk of turning to violence later on, international experts warned this week in Algiers.

The Algiers-based African Centre for the Study and Research on Terrorism (CAERT) hosted the meeting on Wednesday (February 27th).

"The prison environment favours the spread of messages and excesses that encourage a number of young people to embrace violent extremism based on a wrong view or interpretation of religion," said Algerian presidential advisor Kamel Rezzag-Bara.

In the framework of the Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation, programmes were established in prisons, Rezzag-Bara explained.

A large number of released prisoners did not re-join terrorist groups, which is a testimony to Algeria's success in the matter, he added.

Terrorists act on conviction, and that Algeria needs to continue to "effectively combat" terrorism by addressing the ideology behind these actions, Rezzag-Bara noted.

Two years ago the justice and religious affairs ministries launched a special programme in Algerian prisons. They recruited 250 imams, male and female religious guides to guide the religious ideas of 55,000 inmates and prevent the spread of takfir
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
ist ideology.

The Global Counter-Terrorism Forum "provided answers in enhancing and enforcing laws [for] rehabilitating and reintegrating terrorist prisoners", United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
Inter-Regional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) Director Jonathan Lucas said.

EU Counter-terrorism Co-ordinator Gilles Kerchove stressed the need to fight terrorism by involving society.

"We have to work in co-ordination with non-governmental organizations, civil society, security agencies, prison, education and health officials because these areas are in daily and direct contact with individuals," he said.

The workshop, which was organised in co-operation with UNICRI, presented the experiences of countries which successfully prevented imprisoned violent Islamic fascisti from returning to their former way of life.

Participants agreed on the need to study the reasons that draw young people to terrorism.

The Association of Sahel Preachers and Scholars for Renouncing Violence and Extremism seeks to get its message across by making scholars communicate with young people.

They do this in "prisons and public places, such as mosques", founding member Sheikh Abu Said Belaid Bin Ahmed Imam explained.

The association's work would continue "as long as this ideology exists", he said, adding that extremism was caused by fatwas imported from overseas.

"Prisons have become like schools for takfir. We need to change the religious speech used to reintegrate prisoners, to immunise them against takfirist ideology," he said.

Kerry Says Erdogan Zionism Remarks 'Objectionable'
[An Nahar] U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
held talks with Turkey's leaders on the Syria crisis Friday amid a row over controversial comments by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan branding Zionism a "crime against humanity."

"Obviously we disagree with that, we find it objectionable," Kerry said at a joint presser in Ankara, referring to a speech delivered by Erdogan that likened Zionism to fascism
...a political system developed in Italy symbolized by the Roman fasces -- thin reeds, each flimsy in itself but unbreakable when bound into a bundle. The word is nowadays thrown around by all sorts of people who have no idea what they're talking about...
and anti-Semitism.

Kerry said he would raise the issue "very directly" with Erdogan and express Washington's hopes to see the two "vital allies" work together.

The top U.S. diplomat's visit came a day after Washington announced that it would for the first time provide direct aid to Syrian rebels in the form of food and medical supplies as well as $60 million in extra assistance to the political opposition.

But the discussions were overshadowed by renewed tension between Turkey and Israel, two major Washington allies, following comments Erdogan made earlier this week at a U.N.-sponsored forum in Vienna.

"As is the case for Zionism, anti-Semitism and fascism, it is inevitable that Islamophobia
...the irrational fear that Moslems will act the way they usually do...
be considered a crime against humanity," Erdogan said on Wednesday.

Kerry said it was essential for Turkey and Israel to rekindle their "historic cooperation" but the situation got more complicated "in the aftermath of the speech that we heard in Vienna."

Ennahda to surrender sovereign ministries
[MAGHAREBIA] Tunisia's ruling Ennahda party on Wednesday (February 27th) agreed to give up key ministries to independents.

"We agreed to maintain neutrality of the four ministries of illusory sovereignty, including the Interior Ministry which will be led by an independent person," Ennahda party leader Rachid Ghannouchi told Radio Kalima on Wednesday.

The new government will "be formed by five or six parties instead of the three parties that participated in the formation of the previous government", he said.

"We see that it is in the interests of the Tunisian government, in the transitional period and for the period to come, to bring together Islamists and secularists... even though we are the majority," Ghannouchi added.

The politician had previously declared that the ruling Islamist party would "never give up power" secured through "the legitimacy of the ballot".

The Islamist party has controlled the interior, justice and foreign ministries since Tunisia's first free elections in October 2011. The defence portfolio was already in the hands of an independent, Abdelkarim Zbidi.

With this decision, Ennahda meets the demands of Tunisian opposition parties and the two members of the ruling troika -- Ettakatol and Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki's Congress for the Republic.

"The concession made by Ennahda with regard to the sovereign ministries is a positive thing," Ettakatol Party front man Mohamed Bennour said.

The same day as the Ennahda concession was announced, however, the ruling party refused to sign a charter governing proper conduct between political parties.

Tripoli Roads Blocked over Bekaa Dispute between Army, Shahhal Bodyguards
[An Nahar] Several roads were blocked on Friday in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
in protest at a dispute that erupted between army troops and the bodyguards of Salafist holy man Dai al-Islam al-Shahhal in the Bekaa town of Majdal Anjar.

"An army patrol jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
one of al-Shahhal's bodyguards for carrying a visible weapon in Majdal Anjar," OTV quoted a military source as saying.

Voice of Leb radio (93.3) said "army troops confiscated the machinegun of one of al-Shahhal's bodyguards who was trying to block Majdal Anjar's road and a verbal dispute ensued."

"They later returned the machinegun," the radio station added.

MTV said Shahhal was "insulted at a security checkpoint."

Later on Friday, LBCI television reported that protesters blocked the Azmi and Mejdlayya roads in Tripoli, the Salafist holy man's hometown, to condemn the incident.

Protesters shouted slogans condemning "the harassment against holy mans" and threatening further escalation "should this treatment continue."

The situation was already tense across the country on Friday, after strict security measures in the Sidon suburb of Abra managed to prevent a sit-in held by Islamist holy man Sheikh Ahmed al-Asir from turning violent.

Also on Friday, Islamist inmates rioted at the Roumieh prison while four men confronted Sheikh Hisham Khalifeh during his Friday sermon at the Mohammed al-Amin Mosque in downtown Beirut.

On Friday morning, Shahhal said the military institution is "largely infiltrated."

Gendarmery commander Brig. Gen. Joseph Doueihi noted that "a certain party coordinated and synchronized the Islamist protests in several regions at noon."

Fourteen dead in shootout between Filipino clan, Malaysian forces
[LATIMES] Fourteen people reportedly were killed Friday in a shootout between Malaysian commandos and a Filipino clan that has holed up in a Malaysian coastal village for weeks, claiming the land belongs to them.

The lengthy standoff turned bloody after members of the clan started shooting at troops, who were tightening security around the village of Lahad Datu, a Malaysian police official told news hounds. Twelve clan members and two Malaysian commandos were reported dead in the shootout.

"We don't want to engage them but they fired at us," said Hamza Taib, police chief of Sabah state, in an interview with the News Agency that Dare Not be Named. "We have no option but to return fire."

A clan front man insisted to news hounds in the Philippines that Malaysian commandos had fired the first shot. The Filipinos had "no recourse but to defend themselves to their last breath," front man Abraham Idjirani told the Philippine Star.

A day before the bloodshed erupted, the Philippine government had pleaded with Sultan Jamalul Kiram III to persuade his followers to return to the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

"The Kirams would like to speak to us.... Let's do it in a way where the tense situation has been resolved and we can discuss in an objective, prudent atmosphere," said Edwin Lacierda, front man for Philippines President Benigno Aquino III, in a Thursday news conference.

The Mohammedan sultanate once ruled over most of northern Borneo, now the Malaysian state of Sabah. It has long claimed the area, but the dispute had been dormant for years. Then three weeks ago nearly 200 members of the Filipino clan arrived by boat to assert their claim to the territory.

Shahbagh youths call for defying Jamaat
[Bangla Daily Star] Shahbagh protesters yesterday urged the people to rise up against the countrywide campaign of terror by Jamaat-Shibir men.

They called upon the nation to imbue itself with the spirit of March -- the month the Liberation War began in 1971 -- and resist "the evil force that Jamaat and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir
... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh...
are".

Addressing a huge rally at Shahbagh intersection, the youths said they would be on the streets to foil the hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
s called by Jamaat and its ally BNP.

However,
Caliphornia hasn't yet slid into the ocean, no matter how hard it's tried...
in the same breath, they asked all not to take the law into their own hands. People, they added, should rather turn the troublemakers in to the law enforcers.

Yesterday was the 25th day of the demonstration for capital punishment to all war criminals and a ban on Jamaat-Shibir.

Imran H Sarker, spokesperson and one of the organisers, said, "Our enemy today are the same collaborators who joined forces with the Pakistain occupation army to kill the Bangalees. But we are awake. We will not let an inch of our soil be blooded by the evil force."

He said Jamaat had been unleashing violence like it did 42 years back.

The war criminals and their cohorts had brainwashed a section of youths into shedding blood on the streets, he observed. "We urge them to shun the company of war criminals and get back on the right track."

The crowds let out a deafening roar, as he asked, "Our forefathers defeated the Pak force in 1971. Now can we not defeat and eliminate the collaborators in 2013?"

2 US Men Indicted In Series Of Synagogue Bombings
[Ynet] Two US men have been indicted in a series of firekabooms on synagogues. Prosecutors in New Jersey's Bergen County say a grand jury has voted to indict 20-year-old Aakash Dalal and Anthony M. Graziano,

The 30-count indictment includes attempted murder, bias intimidation and arson charges, among others.
More details from The Times of Israel:
A grand jury handed up a 30-count indictment against Aakash Dalal and Anthony M. Graziano, Prosecutor John Molinelli said.

Graziano faces nine counts of attempted murder stemming from the firebombing of a rabbiÂ’s residence in Rutherford on Jan. 11, 2012. Police said Molotov cocktails were thrown at Congregation Beth El in Rutherford, igniting a fire in the second-floor bedroom of the rabbiÂ’s residence where he, his wife, five children and his parents were sleeping at the time and escaped serious injury.

Both Graziano and Dalal are charged with bias intimidation, conspiracy to commit arson upon a synagogue and aggravated arson. They also face charges related to terrorism, possession of destructive devices and hindering apprehension.

The two were both 19 at the time, and are childhood friends from Lodi. They are facing up to life in prison if convicted on all charges.

Brian Neary, an attorney representing Dalal, said his client will plead not guilty.

“He’s a college student, not a mastermind,” Neary said.

An attorney representing Graziano couldnÂ’t be reached for comment.

Graziano is being held on $2.5 million bail. Dalal is in custody on $5.5 million bail.

Bangladesh
Khaleda calls it 'genocide'
[Bangla Daily Star] BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
yesterday called a nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal
... a peculiarly Bangla combination of a general strike and a riot, used by both major political groups in lieu of actual governance ...
for Tuesday to protest what she said was "genocide" during Thursday's violence over death sentence for Jamaat leader Sayeedi.

At a presser, she also announced her party would bring out processions in the capital and other cities and district headquarters around 3:00pm today.

On Thursday, Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
and its student wing unleashed a countrywide terror and clashed with law enforcers soon after Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
...Islamic orator and politician. He was a former Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008, and is one of the most prominent leaders of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami...
received the sentence for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, 1971.

Jamaat-Shibir men were already out on the streets to enforce a shutdown when the International Crimes Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict.

The violence claimed at least 33 lives.

In a press statement later that night, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed the incident the "cruellest genocide in the history and worse than the genocide by the [Pakistain] occupation army during the Liberation War in 1971".

Yesterday, Khaleda Zia at the presser said, "I am stunned. I am outraged. I am deeply hurt. I have no words to condemn and protest. Heinous genocide is taking place again in our country. People are being killed like birds.

'Three Killed' in Twin Blasts at Somali Beach Restaurant
[An Nahar] At least three people were killed and several maimed in twin attacks at a restaurant on the popular beachfront of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, witnesses and police said Friday.

The blasts, the latest in a string of attacks in the war-ravaged city, were reportedly caused by a suicide kaboomer wearing a vest packed with explosives, followed by a boom-mobile.

"The man went kaboom! when guards at the restaurant entrance tried to stop him... at least three people including the bomber died," said Hersi Adan, a security official who was near the scene of the attack.

"A few minutes later a car parked outside of the building went kaboom! killing another and wounding seven."

The kaboom took place close to Mogadishu's famous Lido beach, which is usually crowded on weekends with families enjoying the beach, playing football or swimming in the Indian Ocean waves.

"The restaurant was busy... I saw the dead bodies of four including the bomber," said Muhudin Hassan, a witness.

Mohammed Abdullahi, a businessman who was inside the restaurant when the attack took place, said he saw the bodies of two security guards and at least nine other people were maimed.

"Many people who were maimed bravely ran away after the kaboom, so more might have been injured," he added.

Europe
Islamic extremists seek to exploit frustration in Bosnia
Nearly 20 years after the fighting stopped in Bosnia-Herzegovnia, a growing number of the country's Muslims have become frustrated with the democratic path their country has taken. And Islamists are exploiting that frustration.
Helped along by the weapons depots mosques the Saoodis funded during and after the civil war...
Unlike ethnic Croats and Serbs in Bosnia, Muslim Bosniaks do not receive economic, political, or moral support from neighboring countries. Many Bosniaks feel alone in their effort to create and maintain their own identity and political institutions. And increasingly, the argument that Shari'a law -- and not democracy -- is the answer for Bosnia.
If you're going to be independent, do you need help from neighboring countries?
Nusret Imamovic, the leader of Bosnia's radical Wahhabi community, told a standing-room-only crowd of some 500 people in Tuzla, "Unlike secularism and democracy, we say there is only one truth -- law of Allah and Shari'a. And it wants the people to accept that truth and surrender to that truth. Does Allah have right to request that? Well, He is the holder and the owner of everything."

The event at which he spoke, "The Advantage Shari'a And The Failure Of Democracy", was billed as a "summit". Although no resolutions or statements were adopted, the well-attended and highly visible meeting was a troubling sign for some in Tuzla, which has generally been known for moderation and tolerance. Residents are proud that the city's Serbian Orthodox church was unscathed during the war.

But surprisingly, only about 30 people gathered outside the hotel to protest the meeting. One young protester said, "My point of view is that democracy died in Germany [in the 1930s] when they allowed the extremists to rule. And this is pure extremism. This has nothing to do with Islam or religion."

At the event in Tuzla, Imamovic was joined by Bilal Bosnic, an equally hard-line Islamist and critic of democracy. He said, "In a democracy, one only has the right to say, 'Yes, I agree' -- the right to approve of whatever is served up to you. But, you know, a human being should not bow his head before anybody but the creator -- our Allah."

Mevlid Jasarevic, who is serving an 18-year prison sentence for firing shots at the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo in 2011, spent time before the attack in Imamovic's Islamist community of Gornja Maoca in northeastern Bosnia.

Only a few years ago, their kind of extremism was truly a fringe phenomenon with little traction among Bosnia's Muslims. The official Islamic Community was led by respected moderate Mustafa Ceric until he stepped down in the summer of 2012. While the loss of Ceric's prestige has weakened the Islamic Community's authority, some analysts argue that his advocacy of Bosniak nationalism and his criticism of the post-Dayton system in Bosnia also created a potential foothold for more radical views.

Overall I found the article very interesting.

However, I don't agree with the statement:
"But a year later, Petraeus met the same fate as McKiernan and McChrystal after alienating the CIA top brass which enmeshed him in a scandal."

Petraeus did that to himself and he should have known better. The "top brass" may have helped bring his zipper control problem to light, but Petraeus has only himself to blame.

Not all my attempts at humour succeed, it seems. Sorry. That was the first time I saw the term, and in a serious, old-style magazine, too. It struck me the way some of the things I've learnt here strike the trailing daughters when I say them aloud, not thinking that perhaps I'm a tad mature for such vocabulary.

As for the Strong opinions a[re] expressed, it struck me that the opinions stated in the piece were considerably more strongly felt than usual. Not a judgement, merely an observation. Had I thought it inappropriate, or merely not right for Rantburg, I shouldn't have published it.

Again, my apologies for the confusion.

#10  The internal process of performance review, Fitness {FITREPS} and Officer Evaluation Reports [OER} generally tends to weed out independent thinkers and stand-up men long before they achieve Flag rank. Final elevation to 07 [General Officer] is a rather exclusive, back-channel political process as opposed to one of formal selection board review based upon an individual's career accomplishments and merit. The propensity to select officer who look quite like yourself is ever present and widely accepted.

Brigadier General Abdul Jalil al-Assadi, the police chief of Diwaniyah province, said the bombs went off about 7:30 am (0430 GMT) in the market, south of the province's eponymous capital.

Dr Adnan Turki, the director of the Diwaniyah health department, put the toll from the blasts at five dead and 45 maimed.

The blasts came a day after at least 26 people were killed and more than 60 maimed in a series of kabooms in the Storied Baghdad area and shootings in northern Iraq.

Dozens of Egyptian Christians Held in Libya's Benghazi
[An Nahar] Around 50 Egyptian Christians suspected of trying to convert Mohammedans have been tossed in the calaboose
You have the right to remain silent...
in the eastern city of Benghazi on illegal immigration charges, a Libyan security official said on Friday.

"Forty-eight Egyptian traders who worked in the Benghazi municipal market have been arrested based on reports of suspect activities," the source told Agence La Belle France Presse.

He said they were found in possession of a quantity of Bibles, texts encouraging conversion to Christianity, and images of Christ and the late Pope Shenuda of Egypt's Coptic Christians, none of which were for "personal use."

But the main charge was illegal entry into Libya, he said.

A video posted on the Internet shows dozens of men with shaved heads squatted on the floor in a tiny room as a bearded Libyan recounts how they had been arrested on charges of proselytising.

A local official, meanwhile, said the group of men were being well treated and would be deported after an investigation over illegal immigration was completed.

Four foreigners -- an Egyptian, South African, South Korean and a Swede with a U.S. passport -- were arrested in Benghazi in mid-February on suspicion of trying to convert Mohammedans to Christianity, something that is strictly banned in Islam.

Taliban welcome JUI-F APC declaration for peace talks
[Dawn] Pak Talibs have welcomed the five-point declaration of an All Parties Conference (APC) called by the Jamaat Ulema-e-Islam
...Assembly of Islamic Clergy, or JUI, is a Pak Deobandi (Hanafi) political party. There are two main branches, one led by Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and one led by Maulana Samiul Haq. Fazl is active in Pak politix and Sami spends more time running his madrassah. Both branches sponsor branches of the Taliban, though with plausible deniability...
-- Fazl (JUI-F) for steps to restore peace in Pakistain's restive tribal areas.

Mainstream political and religious parties and civil society groups agreed at the moot on Thursday to negotiate peace with thug elements through a broadened tribal jirga earlier formed by JUI-F.

"The political parties have sent a positive message by excluding the word terrorism from the joint declaration. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) shura (council) gives it high regards," Ehsanullah Ehsan, spokesmen for the banned thug outfit, told Dawn.com on Friday via telephone from some holy man's guesthouse an undisclosed location.

The front man, however, said that Pak Taliban was still waiting for a "positive response" from the Pak military on the offer of peace talks with the thugs.

Ehsan said that Taliban council also respected the gesture of all the political and non-political forces which have shown confidence in the members of the tribal jirga and have tasked them for holding peace talks. "We welcome and respect this decision," he said.

The Taliban front man said a serious sitting for peace would help assess the seriousness of the government, the army and other stakeholders in moving ahead with the grinding of the peace processor. He said that such a step would also help judge "the powers of the jirga for holding such talks independently."

Asked if the gunnies were willing to endorse a ceasefire and seize attacks on Pak security forces, the front man said: "It will only begin when we are on the table (for peace talks)."

"Ceasefire and such modalities can be discussed when we kick start the grinding of the peace processor," he said.

To another query about announcing the TTP jirga team, which will be coming forward for the peace talks, he said:

"If most of the country's forces can agree and build consensus on some figures to be part of the jirga, the Taliban will also propose their own names," he said when asked about members of the team which may engage in peace negotiations. He, however, declined to disclose any names.

U.S. Teen Designs Compact Nuclear Reactor
[An Nahar] Eighteen-year-old Taylor Wilson has designed a compact nuclear reactor that could one day burn waste from old atomic weapons to power anything from homes and factories to space colonies.

The American teen, who gained fame four years ago after designing a fusion reactor he planned to build in the garage of his family's home, shared his latest endeavor at a TED Conference in southern California on Thursday.

"It's about bringing something old, fission, into the 21st Century," Wilson said. "I think this has huge potential to change the world."

He has designed a small reactor capable of generating 50-100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power as many as 100,000 homes.

The reactor can be made assembly-line style and powered by molten radioactive material from nuclear weapons, Wilson said. The relatively small, modular reactor can be shipped sealed with enough fuel to last for 30 years.

"You can plop them down anywhere in the world and they work, buried under the ground for security reasons," he said, while detailing his design at TED.

"In the Cold War we built up this huge arsenal of nuclear weapons and we don't need them anymore," Wilson said. "It would be great if we could eat them up, and this reactor loves this stuff."

His reactors are designed to spin turbines using gas instead of steam, meaning they operate at temperatures lower than those of typical nuclear reactors and don't spew anything if there is a breach.

The fuel is in the form of molten salt, and the reactors don't need to be pressurized, according to the teenager.

"In the event of an accident, you can just drain the core into a tank under the reactor with neutron absorbers and the reaction stops," Wilson said.

"There is no inclination for the fission products to leave this reactor," he said. "In an accident, the reactor may be toast, which is sorry for the power company, but there is no problem."

Wilson, who graduated grade school in May, said he is putting off university to focus on a company he created to make Modular Fission Reactors.

He sees his competition as nations, particularly China, and the roadblocks ahead as political instead of technical.

Wilson planned to have a prototype ready in two years and a product to market in five years.

"Not only does it combat climate change, it can bring power to the developing world," Wilson said with teenage optimism.

"Imagine having a compact reactor in a rocket designed by those planning to habitat other planets. Not only would you have power for propulsion, but power once you get there."

Three terror suspects arrested in France
Following the adventures of the gentleman who killed three off-duty French soldiers, then shot up a Jewish school last year, the French appear to have gotten very serious about their jihadi problem. And when the French really get serious, things happen.
Three Chechens with suspected links to an alleged terrorist cell in Spain have been arrested in France, according to Spanish authorities.

Spain's Interior Ministry said the arrests were carried out jointly by France and Spain. They were based on information uncovered in August when a series of raids in Linea de Concepcion, a town near Gibraltar, led to the arrest of suspected Islamic terrorists allegedly planning attacks on European targets.

The three recent arrests were made in northern France. Ali Dokaev was arrested in Noyon, about 60 miles northeast of Paris, and the other suspects in the Paris area, Elsy Issakov in Les Lilas and Mourad Idrissov in Genevieve des Bois.

Putin honors soldiers slaughtered in Chechnya
Russian President Vladimir Putin laid flowers at a memorial Friday for 84 soldiers killed in Chechnya on March 1, 2000.

The memorial was for members of the 6th Company, based in the western Russian city of Pskov, who died after they were cut off by retreating Chechen separatist fighters in the North Caucasus republic's Argun Gorge. Only six paratroopers from the company survived the attack in the Second Chechen War.

"These soldiers from the 6th Company showed the whole world that it is impossible to defeat Russia, that at a critical moment its valiant sons will fight until the death for their motherland," Putin said during a meeting with relatives of the deceased in Pskov.

Twenty-one members of the company were awarded the Hero of Russia award posthumously. The remaining 63 recieved the Order of Courage.

Medicare paid $5.1B for poor nursing home care
[DETROITNEWS] Medicare paid billions in taxpayer dollars to nursing homes nationwide that were not meeting basic requirements to look after their residents, government investigators have found.
You can tell a decent nursing home by sniffing when you walk in the door. If it smells like poop don't leave Grandmaw there.
The report, released Thursday by the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general, said Medicare paid about $5.1 billion for patients to stay in skilled nursing facilities that failed to meet federal quality of care rules in 2009, in some cases resulting in dangerous and neglectful conditions.

One out of every three times patients wound up in nursing homes that year, they landed in facilities that failed to follow basic care requirements laid out by the federal agency that administers Medicare, investigators estimated.

By law, nursing homes need to write up care plans specially tailored for each resident, so doctors, nurses, therapists and all other caregivers are on the same page about how to help residents reach the highest possible levels of physical, mental and psychological well-being.

Not only are residents often going without the crucial help they need, but the government could be spending taxpayer money on facilities that could endanger people's health, the report concluded. The findings come as concerns about health care quality and cost are garnering heightened attention as the Obama administration implements the nation's sweeping health care overhaul.

Four found guilty over sharia law whipping in Australia
An Australian court heard that Wassim Fayad and three other men - Zakaryah Raad, Tolga Cifci and Cengiz Coskun - claimed they were following sharia when they held Muslim convert Cristian Martinez down and whipped him on the back in the middle of the night.

With these words, "Next time you think about picking up a drink you will remember this pain," Fayad delivered 40 lashes with an electrical cord across the back of Martinez, to help the Sydney man to quit drugs and alcohol.

Martinez vomited during the attack and pleaded for mercy, "Can you stop this? Stop what you're doing?"

Fayad told his victim he loved him and it was for his own good.

The whipping happened in a western Sydney townhouse in July 2011. In what is thought to be the first case of its kind in Australia, the four men were convicted on Thursday of assault and other charges.

Magistrate Brian Maloney told Burwood Local Court, "Until now, assaults occasioned in the course of a religious practice involving mortification of the flesh have not been before any court in any common law country."

A statement from Sheikh Omar El Banna, the imam of the Omar mosque in Auburn, said the whipping was not sanctioned or authorized by the community. When Martinez went to the sheikh for advice, he was told, "This is ridiculous. You can't apply this ruling, this is wrong. This isn't what should be happening."

The founder of the Islamic Friendship Association of Australia, Keysar Trad, said he was glad the court did not treat the case as a trial of the religion. He said, "The Islamic faith does not allow any person to take the law into their own hands. Muslims cannot perpetrate a crime and have no right to punish anyone. [The men] must have a very active imagination. They should not blame religion when things get out of hand."

The court heard that Martinez drank and took drugs, before he called Fayad to ask for guidance. Fayad said, "Yeah, it means I'm going to tie you up, brother, that's what I'm going to do."

Fayad called Raad and instructed him to go to Martinez's house, where Raad sent Fayad a message saying something like, "Allam, the sharia bring right material. It's important."

Fayad, Cifci and Coskun then joined Raad at Martinez's house and Fayad whipped him while the others held him down.

Maloney said, "Mr Fayad assured Mr Martinez that the last 20 lashes won't be so bad, and told [him] that he loves him, that he wants him to be a good person and the way he's going, he's ruining his life."

Martinez said he consented to the first, 11th and 21st lash, but Maloney found that he had withdrawn his consent.

Raad was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, stealing and two counts of intimidation, while the others were convicted of the assault and stealing charges, related to a CCTV hard drive they took from Martinez's home.

#2  The Latin word Imperator was originally a title roughly equivalent to commander under the Roman Republic. Later it became a part of the titulature of the Roman Emperors as part of their cognomen. - wiki

Because of their history, the Roman tyrants couldn't use the word for King (Rex) for their position and office, so the term emperor was adopted from the existing lexicon to fulfill the same purpose.

Icelandic meat pies... have no meat
[News24] Here's one they weren't expecting - meat pies with no meat.

When officials in Iceland began hearing about horsemeat being secreted into beef products around Europe, they decided to run tests to ensure the same thing was not happening in Iceland.

Icelandic meat inspector Kjartan Hreinsson says his team did not find any horsemeat, but one brand of locally produced beef pie left it stumped.

It contained no meat at all.

"That was the peculiar thing," Hreinsson said in a telephone interview on Friday.

"It was labelled as beef pie, so it should be beef pie."

Hreinsson said it appeared to be some kind of vegetable matter.

He said the mystery pie was traced to a firm in western Iceland and the case had been handed to municipal authorities.

Egyptian Muslims Clash with Police amid Religious Tensions
[An Nahar] Egyptian police fired tear gas on Friday to disperse Moslem protesters outside a church in southern Egypt after claims that a women who converted to Christianity was hiding in the church, a security source.

The police acted after the protesters pelted them with stones in the town of Kom Umbo, the source said.

The official al-Ahram newspaper reported on its website that police also refused to allow Christian worshipers to leave the church, in order to avoid festivities between them and the protesters.

The Moslems had also protested outside the church on Thursday night.

Sectarian tensions are high in Egypt, which is home to the region's largest Christian minority, with violence occasionally flaring between Moslems and the Coptic Christians.

Copts, who make up between six and 10 percent of the country's 83 million people, have complained of an increase in sectarian attacks since an uprising overthrew president Hosni Mubarak

Syria Jihadists Take Iraq Border Post
[An Nahar] Jihadist fighters of Al-Nusra Front have seized control of a checkpoint on northeast Syria's border with Iraq, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday.

The rebels overran the post at Yaarubiyeh in oil-rich Hassakeh province on Thursday after fierce festivities with government forces, the Britannia-based Observatory said in a statement.

The border crossing had been controlled by rebel forces last year before the army recaptured it.

Al-Nusra Front, an increasingly influential factor in Syria's conflict, also took control of the nearby town of Shaddadeh and surrounding villages in mid-February.

It first gained notoriety for its suicide kabooms in Syria's main cities and has evolved into a strong fighting force leading attacks on battlefronts throughout the country.

The Front's tactics and suspected affiliation to al-Qaeda's offshoot in Iraq have landed it on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations.

Rebels of the mainstream Free Syrian Army have told Agence La Belle France Presse that Al-Nusra fighters, despite their small numbers, have greater economic and logistical support than other snuffies and funding from abroad.

The jihadist group targets strategic points mainly in eastern Syria, including oil and gas facilities, and draws recruits from the local population by paying them a salary.

BNP, Jamaat put blame on govt
[Bangla Daily Star] Both the main opposition BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami

The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
yesterday claimed that the government had launched Thursday's attacks on the country's religious minorities.

The claims came a day after Jamaat-Shibir men had torched and vandalised temples and houses of the minority communities in different districts.

Speaking at a press briefing in the city yesterday afternoon, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
claimed that the government in a planned way had attacked the houses of the minority communities to divert focus from the democratic movement.

Issuing a statement, Jamaat also claimed that the ruling party men had launched the attacks on the temples, pagodas and houses of Hindus and Buddhists to divert the Islamists' movement for trial of "atheist" bloggers.

The statement issued by Jamaat central committee member Hamidur Rahman Azad also denied Jamaat-Shibir's involvement in such attacks as reported by different media.

Meanwhile,

Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday said it was crystal clear that Jamaat-Shibir men had attacked the temples and houses of the religious minorities.

He termed the claim by BNP and Jamaat a blatant lie.

"They have been resorting to lies since 1971 and this time they have shown their faces again," he said.

The AL leader said the anti-liberation forces wanted to take political benefit as they did in the past by attacking on the religious minorities.

Mark Steyn: Government-by-fake-disaster-movie
The Sequester as only Mark Steyn can tell it:

Government-by-fake-disaster-movie seems to be going swimmingly for Obama. Every Republican attempt at fiscal discipline now ends with both higher spending and more taxes: that's the way it went with the Christmas blockbuster "Fiscal Cliff," and that's the way to bet with "Les Sequesterables," too. Even the IRS can't keep up: "tax season" is upon us, and yet they're not accepting tax returns from millions of Americans because the IRS hasn't yet managed to process the tax changes passed in the dead of night at New Year. American government is a joke -- and, sadly, not one of those jokes that everybody takes seriously and kicks up a fuss about, like Seth MacFarlane's "We Saw Your Boobs" song that the New Yorker attacked for its "hostility to women in the workplace," or Joan Rivers' joke about Heidi Klum's Oscars gown that Abraham Foxman's Anti-Defamation League is busy issuing stern denunciations of. No, in an America in which every throwaway gag is a hate crime, Obama's fake disaster movie of the month is the only joke we all go along with, even though he's insulting our intelligence far more than Seth and the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus singing "We Saw Your Boobs" to Anne Hathaway and Halle Berry.

Can you pierce the mists of time and go back all the way to the year 2007? Back then, federal spending was 40 percent lower than it is today. In a mere half-decade, has all that 40 percent gravy become so indispensable to the general welfare that not even a teensy-weensy sliver of it can be cut?

If you really believe that, then America is going to die, and a gullible citizenry willing to give this laughable charade the time of day will bear ultimate responsibility. We have seen the boobs, and they are us.

Shia body member gunned down
[Dawn] A young man associated with the Shia Ulema Council was sprayed with bullets on his doorstep in Incholi on Thursday in what police suspected as part of the ongoing wave of sectarian killings.

The officials said two men riding a cycle of violence pulled up outside the residence of 21-year-old Danish Hussain, situated in block 20 of the Federal B Area, in the early hours of the day and called out his name posing to be his friends.

"As he came out, they fired multiple shots at him and sped away," said an official at the Samanabad cop shoppe. "He sustained two bullet wounds each in the head and chest and was struck down in his prime. Gunshots attracted other members of the family who rushed out and found Danish lying in a pool of blood."

The body was later moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities Following the targeted murder, tension gripped the locality and businesses remained closed in Incholi and neighbouring blocks of F.B Area.

A Shia Ulema Council front man condemned the killing alleging that he was killed by members of a banned cut-thoat outfit. He said the victim was associated with the council as an active member. The incident also attracted condemnation from the Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Mohammedaneen (MWM). A party front man regretted that despite giving assurances to the MWM, the government had failed to stop killings on sectarian grounds.

The police later registered an FIR (27/2013) under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistain Penal Code against unidentified suspects on a complaint of the victim's elder brother.

'Missing' man found rubbed out
A 30-year-old Khokhrapar resident, who had gone missing on Wednesday morning, was found rubbed out in Memon Goth on Thursday, police said.

They added that Mohammad Irfan was found rubbed out near Hamal Marriage Lawn in Memon Goth a day after he had gone missing after leaving home situated in the Gilanabad area of Malir for Korangi where he worked as a labourer.

"The victim was tortured before being fired a single bullet in the head," said an official at the Memon Goth cop shoppe.

He said the body was later moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

The police said the victim was not associated with any political or religious group.

Muttahida man killed
In the Sohrab Goth area, a man who had recently joined the Muttahida Organising Committee after parting ways with a nationalist party was killed in an armed attack near a pharmacy, police said.

They added that 33-year-old Akhtar Gabol was standing outside a pharmacy in Faqeera Goth where gunnies riding a motorbike pulled up and fired multiple bullets before speeding away.

"The victim sustained two bullet wounds and died during treatment at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital," said Sohrab Goth SHO Inspector Naeem Khan.

"He had recently joined the MQM's sister organization, MOC, after parting ways with a nationalist party," the officer said, adding that he was a private security guard by profession.

Man bumped off
A resident of Orangi Town was sprayed with bullets in the Manghopir area in the evening, said the area police. They added that 28-year-old Mohammad Shakeel was found rubbed out in an isolated area called Murghi Khana. He sustained six gunshot wounds, the police said.

"The victim was a resident of Faqeer Colony in Orangi Town," said Manghopir SHO Inspector Ashfaq Baloch.

He added: "We have seized 16 spent bullet casings from the crime-scene.

"It seems that the victim had been kidnapped before being brought here and sprayed with bullets," he said.

The inspector said the victim was not associated with any political or religious group. "The motive for his killing is not yet clear," he added.

on Thursday, where the bully boyz claimed to have destroyed four schools, said that the bully boyz have started a new technique of blowing up the already destroyed or damaged schools in the tribal region to make headlines in media.

He said that the four schools which the bully boyz claimed to have destroyed in Mohmand Agency on Thursday were already abandoned because of earlier destruction and were non-functional.

To a query he said, the only reason for bombing the already bombed schools is to get media attention but he said the media should take care about reporting such incidents and need to have to be verified from the administration.

"All these non functional schools were in the far off areas, there buildings already destroyed, so its beyond understanding, why these schools were first bombed and than the claim made for their destruction, it just to terrorize the local population and get media attention," he replied when asked why the security forces have failed to guard these schools.

[MEMRI.ORG] Question: "I Want To Assassinate The U.S. President, The French President, The British PM, Or Their Ministers."

Answer: "...It is easy, if you ask Allah and be true to Him. These people have many weak points, especially during ceremonies, parties, and election campaigns. Bare in mind, they come to and leave from these parties. Therefore, there must be some means of transport, which is a chance for surveillance or even action.

"If you think you are unable, then you have easy targets like [G.W.] Bush, Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, or Condoleezza Rice. Of course, you can also kill Sarkozy and Tony Blair. It is now easy to reach these guys, especially [now] that they aren't in office anymore."

Question: "I Want To Carry Out A Big Jihad Operation To Support The Religion. Guide Me."

In its answer, Inspire congratulates the inquirer on his great determination, and reiterates that jihad is a form of 'ibadah (worship), like any other type of worship. It also emphasizes the importance of preoccupying the enemy by conducting such operations in his own "backyard," and thereby "driving him crazy". Therefore, it says: "These small operations of today are the stepping stone of tomorrow's victory... Rely on Allah, and answer His call: Jihad."

Inspire Calls On Experienced Doctors To "Create A Lethal Poison... [And] Manufacture Anthrax"; Asks Journalists To Act As AQAP's Eyes In The Field By Spying On The Enemy

Answering one query from an "experienced doctor" who asks for advice on how he can wage jihad, Inspire writes: "Create a lethal poison (gaseous), manufacture anthrax, and give the mujahideen medical advice in their blogs -- or you can contact us directly."

Answering a similar query from "an active journalist," Inspire says that journalism is a "useful profession to the mujahideen," as journalists' wide knowledge of current affairs, along with their "access to many areas as a media personnel," can provide AQAP with valuable intelligence about the enemy, adding that journalists themselves can exploit their positions to execute attacks themselves.

Six wounded in market bombing in southern Thailand
Two bombings occurred in Narithiwat province on Friday, a day after the signing of a consensus agreement by National Security Council secretary-general Paradorn Pattanatabut and BRN liaison office official Hassan Talib in Kuala Lumpur.

The bombings were not a prelude to the failure of the peace talks agreement signed with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, said Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Friday. Ms Yingluck said people should not jump to the immediate conclusion that the government's efforts to arrange negotiations would prove futile.

Narathiwat's Muang district was hit by two bombings during a six-hour time span on Friday. One soldier and five civilians were wounded when an explosive device hidden inside a motorcycle exploded at 5:50 a.m.

The blast occurred at a fresh market in Muang Narathiwat municipality. Witnesses said that a youth parked the motorcycle in front of the morning market, near a pickup truck used by soldiers guarding the market, and then disappeared into the crowd.

Five minutes later a bomb hidden on the bike went off, wounding a soldier and five civilians, one of whom was in critical condition. The explosion also damaged six motorcycles and two pickup trucks parked nearby.

Police blamed separatist terrorists militants.

Around noon, a large retail store, nearby shophouses and motorcycles were damaged by a car bomb blast in the district. The 20kg explosive device concealed inside a pickup truck parked in front of Jip Heng shop, went off opposite the Muang Narathiwat police station. No one was injured or killed in the blast.

Police blamed the bombings on an terrorist insurgent group active in the province.

Central African Rebels Attack Northern Town
[An Nahar] An armed faction of the Seleka rebel coalition in the Central African Republic has attacked the northern town of Sido, a military source said Friday, in an apparent breach of a recent peace accord.

Fighters of the "CPJP Fondamentale" (the Convention of Patriots for Peace and Justice) led by General Nouredine Adam came across the border from Chad and attacked Sido, close to the frontier, on Thursday, the source said.

The rebels targeted the local administrative headquarters, the army base, the paramilitary police post, the customs post and the cop shoppe, he added. The town was abandoned as troops and residents fled into Chad.

"For the moment, we don't know the toll of this attack led by rebels who arrived on board four 4x4 vehicles, of which two were fitted with heavy machine guns," the source said.

The Seleka - which means "alliance" - signed a peace pact on January 11 in Gabon's capital Libreville with President Francois Bozize's regime in the deeply poor, landlocked and unstable country.

The accord mediated by regional leaders provided for a new government of national unity, which was formed and is now led by a member of the opposition, Nicolas Tiangaye, and includes Seleka members.

One of them, Communications Minister Christophe Ghazam Betty, went on local radio Friday to condemn the attack in the north.

"Nouredine Adam takes upon himself the responsibility of going against the Libreville accords. Also by this act, which I describe as madness, he annoys the heads of state in the Economic Community of Central African States and the international community."

Worshippers flee as evening mass turns into mass brawl
[TELEGRAPH.CO.UK] Cops were called to Holy Cross Church in St Helens, Merseyside, on Saturday evening following reports that the men were brawling inside.

One eyewitness said: "There looked to be around 40 of them running riot.

"Police had to stop the mass because they were fighting. Quite a few elderly people were upset. The men seemed to be speaking a foreign language.

"Most of the elderly people went out through a side door, while the fighting carried on in Parade Street."

Police found one man with a cut to his head, but he refused medical attention.

They confirmed there were around 30 people involved in the disturbance, but insisted that only two were actually fighting during mass, which was led by Father Colin Fealey.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "This must have been very upsetting for the other people inside the church at the time. Obviously this type of behaviour inside a church is totally unacceptable and we are continuing to work to trace those responsible."

A statement from the Archdiocese of Liverpool read: "Towards the end of the 6.45pm mass at Holy Cross Church on Saturday, Feb 23 an incident took place which led to the involvement of the police. As those involved were not parishioners or regular members of the congregation, we are unable to comment further."

Hundreds of Tunisia Salafists Rally for Release of Imam
[An Nahar] Hundreds of Salafists
...Salafists are ostentatiously devout Moslems who figure the ostentation of their piety gives them the right to tell others how to do it and to kill those who don't listen to them...
protested on Friday in the Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid, calling for the release of a holy man tossed in the slammer
Please don't kill me!
as part of an inquiry into a shootout between police and radical Islamists.

The crowd shouted "Ali Larayedh, coward!" referring to the interior minister who has been tasked with forging a new coalition government.

The protesters were demanding the release of of Khalifa Karaoui, the imam of a mosque in Sidi Bouzid who was arrested in southern Tunisia on Tuesday.

Karaoui is suspected of having ties to a group of Salafists accused of opening fire on the police last week, wounding two of them.

The Salafists took refuge in a mosque in Sidi Bouzid, before fleeing, assisted by other Islamists, who prevented the police from entering the place of worship.
