Castro's Grandson Flaunts His Wealth
Funny how this sort of thing just doesn't show up in US media...
[Daily Mail via Drudge] - Rich kid of Communism: Fidel Castro's model grandson flashes his wealth and love of the high life on Instagram as he travels the world

•Tony Castro flashed his family's wealth with a bevy of photos on social media

•South Florida-based media outlets covering the Cuban community revealed the images this week before the island's 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution

•Castro shared pictures of his trips to Barcelona and Spain, and also Mexico, which he visited twice in 2018 during consecutive months

•Castro's once-public Instagram account in now private. He has about 1,000 followers who can still see his posts

---------------------------
Fidel Castro's grandson has been on the receiving end of negative comments after photos surfaced of the young man flaunting the family's wealth on social media.

Various South Florida-based media outlets covering the Cuban community came across Tony Castro's snaps just days before the Communist island celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, led by his grandfather who would later rule for five decades before dying in 2016.

The lives of the former Cuban leader's immediate family members have always been somewhat of a secret to the outside world.

Tony Castro, who is in his 20s, managed to keep a low profile despite being active on Instagram.

But the Miami Herald and other media organizations got hold of some photos that today are only visible by his 1,300 followers.
Read on from there to see this preening douchnozzle smile and pose for the cameras...

Death toll from Philippine storm, landslides climbs to 126
[News24] The death toll from a storm that devastated the Philippines shortly after Christmas rose to 126, authorities said on Sunday, adding landslides caused by torrential rain were the top cause.

The storm hit central and eastern Philippine islands on December 29 and caused massive flooding and landslides. More than 100 people died in the mountainous Bicol region southeast of Manila, regional disaster officials said.

While the Bicol region is often hit by deadly typhoons, many people failed to take necessary precautions because the storm was not strong enough to be rated as a typhoon under the government's storm alert system, according to civil defence officials.

Officials also said that many residents were reluctant to leave their homes during the Christmas holidays.

Egypt's Sisi to inaugurate Egypt's largest church, new mosque on Coptic Christmas Eve
[AlAhram] Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi will inaugurate the country’s largest cathedral on Sunday, which marks Coptic Christmas Eve, Coptic Orthodox Church front man Father Boules Halim told Ahram Online.

The Nativity of Christ Cathedral in Egypt's new administrative capital occupies 30 percent of the 4.14-acre site allocated to the complex. The cathedral can accommodate 8,200 worshippers and the complex has been designed around a large central square.

It includes a papal residence, a reception hall, meeting rooms and offices.

Halim said that the preparations for the inauguration ceremony had been organised by the Egyptian presidency.

Pope Tawadros I will be in attendance, and diplomatic delegations from different countries will also attend, he said.

It will be followed by a mass held by the pope, he said.

El-Sisi commissioned the building of the cathedral in January 2017.

"It is expected that the president will also inaugurate the new administrative capital’s El-Fattah El-Alim Mosque on Sunday," said Halim.

Pope Tawadros is expected to give a speech at the mosque after its inauguration, Anba Morqos, the bishop of Shubra El-Kheima, told CBC Extra News on Saturday evening.

The newly constructed mosque can hold more than 17,000 worshippers and is expected to be one of the largest mosques in the world.

The mosque is located on the Middle Ring Road in the New Administrative Capital.

The Nativity of Christ Cathedral was partially opened in 2018 when Pope Tawadros II and El-Sisi entered hand-in-hand. It was then that the pope conducted Christmas Eve mass for the first time in the cathedral.

The attendees applauded, and Copts, who make up about 10 percent of the population, heralded El-Sisi’s appearance there as a milestone.

It has been El-Sisi’s habit to visit Coptic churches during Christmas Eve since he took office in 2014.

The Egyptian government has designated 7 January as a paid holiday for employees of the country’s private and public sectors to mark Coptic Christmas.

In recent years, Copts have been targeted by Islamist holy warriors. In response, the country has tightened security near churches, particularly during Christmas celebrations.

The new administrative capital, set to be completed in 2020, is part of the government’s plan to expand urban areas to deal with the country's rapid population growth and improve the nation's infrastructure.

Malawi: UN Condemns 'Ritual Murder' As Persons With Albinism in Malawi Face 'Total Extinction'
[All Africa] The United Nations in Malawi has strongly condemned the recent inhuman act against people with albinism that took place on New Year's Eve in Nkhatabay as Malawi's estimated 10,000 albinos face "extinction" if they continue to be murdered for their body parts for use in witchcraft.

Yasin Phiri, a 54-year-old man with albinism, was brutally murdered on New Year's eve in his house at Kande Trading Centre in Nkhata Bay in front of his nine-year-old son.

Brazil military at odds with President Bolsonaro’s openness to US base: Official
[PRESSTV] The Brazilian military is at odds with Brazil’s new far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s comments that he would be open to discussing the possibility of hosting a US military base on the South American country’s soil, a top army official says.

The Brazilian Armed Forces are against a US base in the country and Bolsonaro’s comment has not been well received by the military, Rooters quoted an unnamed bigwig from the country’s armed forces as saying on Saturday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that the possibility of ceding territory for a military base took Brazilian officers by surprise in the armed forces, which traditionally are zealous guardians of national illusory sovereignty.

Bolsonaro, 63, who took office earlier this week, is an ardent admirer of US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and the White House’s policies, particularly those with regard to opposing the "authoritarian regimes" of left-wing governments in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

A former army officer-turned-politician, Bolsonaro said in a televised interview on Thursday that he might be willing to allow an American base in Brazil as a way to "counter Russian influence" in Venezuela, a move that would mark a dramatic shift in direction for the largest South American country’s foreign policy.

He said what Brazil seeks is to have "supremacy here in South America," upending foreign policy in the country, which saw the leftist Workers Party emphasizing South-South relations and sometimes tussling on the international stage with Washington.

The American detained in Russia has four passports
[WAPO] Since Russia accused U.S. citizen Paul Whelan of espionage and detained him last week, curious details about the 48-year-old’s personal life have continued to trickle out. He was discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps in 2008 for bad conduct. He has dozens of Russian friends on the Russian social media site Vkontakte.

And he claims citizenship in four countries.

This week, U.S. ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman visited Whelan in the detention facility in Moscow where he is being held. Whelan, a Michigan resident, was born in Canada, and family ties allowed him also to qualify for British and Irish citizenship. Both European countries are requesting access to him, raising questions about whether Whelan’s many passports could affect potential negotiations for his release.

Michael A. Olivas, a law professor at the University of Houston, told The Washington Post that being a citizen in as many as four countries might be uncommon but that it’s "increasingly common that people would have two or more" passports. "Most people don’t live lives that necessitate, require or even allow four passports," Olivas said. But "it’s certainly not illegal."

[Family of American arrested in Russia on spy charges fears for his safety]

It doesn’t matter which passport Whelan used to enter Russia. All four countries have the opportunity to assist him. And having ties to so many nations could help him. "What it does is it gives more countries more stake in his situation," Olivas said.

What remains to be seen is whether one country will speak louder than another on his behalf. Ariel Cohen, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank, told The Post that "it’s absolutely crucial" for all four countries to work together. Otherwise, he warned, Russia could try to make different arrangements with different countries. "If the group doesn’t speak in one voice, the Russians will manage to get a higher price for him," Cohen said.

Moscow demands answers after FBI arrests Russian
[AlAhram] Russia demanded an explanation from the United States on Saturday over the arrest of one of its nationals, amid tensions between the two countries after Moscow held a US citizen for alleged espionage.

FBI agents jugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
Dmitry Makarenko on December 29 on Saipan, the largest of the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth in the Western Pacific. A federal arrest warrant indicates he has since been taken to Florida.

While still a runaway, Makarenko was indicted in June 2017 along with fellow Russian national Vladimir Nevidomy for money laundering and attempting to export defense-restricted goods -- military grade night-vision rifle scopes, monoculars and ammunition primers -- without obtaining the necessary licenses.

Nevidomy has since been tried and convicted. He was sentenced to 26 months in prison with three years of supervised released.

The Russian foreign ministry said US authorities had failed to provide information about Makarenko's arrest to Moscow, which only found out from his family.

Meanwhile,
...back at the mall, Clarissa spent the day shopping for new underwear. Tonight was going to be a special occasion...
a top Russian diplomat said the case of Paul Whelan, the US national detained in Moscow, was very serious.

Whelan, a security official at a US auto parts company and former US Marine, was arrested on December 28 "while carrying out an act of espionage," the FSB security service announced.

"The situation around Mr Whelan is very serious," Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told RIA Novosti news agency.

"He came to Russia, as we understand, to take measures to carry out intelligence activities in violation of Russian law," he said, indicating that Whelan had not yet been formally charged.

But Whelan's lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov told RIA Novosti on Thursday that his client had been charged -- with espionage.

Whelan's family said he was visiting Moscow for a friend's wedding and US security experts have raised doubts that he was a spy, given a reportedly chequered history in the US military.

Some observers say his arrest came in retaliation for last year's arrest in the United States of a Russian woman named Maria Butina.

Butina was indicted and pleaded guilty to acting as an unregistered agent of the Russian government -- a legal charge sometimes used against foreign intelligence agents.

Analysts have speculated that Moscow might be hoping to swap Whelan for Butina or another Russian held by the United States.

Ryabkov said that given the fact that Whelan has not yet been charged, it was too early to talk about his possible release in a spy swap.

Although Whelan entered Russia on his US passport, he also holds British, Irish and Canadian citizenships.

Ryabkov said the question of which country's diplomats would have access to Whelan would be decided on a case-by-case basis, based on conventions on consular relations.

Europe
France’s protestors back on streets
[Saudi Gazette] La Belle France’s "Yellow Vest" protestors were back on the streets again Saturday as a government front man denounced those still protesting as hard-liners who wanted only to bring down the government.

Several hundred protestors gathered on the Champs Elysees in central Gay Paree, where around 15 police wagons were also deployed, an AFP journalist said. Marches were underway in several other cities across La Belle France.

On Friday, government front man Benjamin Griveaux denounced those still protesting as "agitators who want insurrection and, basically, to overthrow the government".

This is the eighth Saturday of protests called by the grass-roots movement. The numbers turning out have fallen steadily since the start of the demonstrations in November.

But the arrest on Wednesday of Eric Drouet, one the movement’s front man, sparked anger among his supporters. Gay Paree police picked up Drouet, who already faces trial for carrying a weapon at a previous demonstration, and detained him for around 10 hours.

Speaking to news hounds after his release, Drouet said he had been on his way to a restaurant with four others when he was picked up by dozens of armed riot police and forced into a vehicle.

"I wasn’t wearing a yellow vest, just walking on the pavement," he said, calling the arrest "incomprehensible".

"I’m not the Yellow Vests’ representative. With or without me, it will continue", he said, speaking of the protests.

Wisconsin Gov. Walker Ending Term With $588.5 Million Budget Surplus
[Free Beacon] Gov. Scott Walker leaves office next week, finishing his second term by posting a budget surplus for the eighth year in a row. Wisconsin ended last fiscal year with a $588.5 million surplus and will start 2018-2019 with the second-highest opening balance since 2000.

"We are leaving Wisconsin in the best financial condition in a generation," Walker announced. "This is part of our legacy and it will continue to drive Wisconsin forward."

Walker, who had not previously discussed publicly what he planned to do after leaving office, said Tuesday he would join a speaking tour across the country and "focus on new methods to articulate a conservative message."

Walker's legacy includes cutting Wisconsin residents' taxes by $8 billion and reducing the collective bargaining rights of government workers.

Walker also signed his last key pieces of legislation last month, one of which included provisions to help corporations receiving awards from the state’s economic development corporation.

The governor created the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) in 2011 as a public-private agency. Revisions to how grants are awarded to companies applying for tax credits or other financial incentives were included in a wide-ranging package of legislation that addressed voting guidelines and the powers of the executive branch.

Houston police charge man, 20, with murder in Walmart shooting death of seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes
[Daily Mail UK] Admit 'investigation has taken new direction', as multiple sources say shooter is black, not white
Oops
Houston police have charged a man, 20, in connection with the murder of seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes who was killed in a Texas Walmart parking lot.

Investigators have filed a capital murder charge against Eric Black Jr after the child was gunned down in the back seat of her family's car with her three siblings and mom.

Fox 26 reports the alleged shooter is black, not white, and also that the shooting may have been gang-related.

A second suspect has been named in local reports as 24-year-old Larry Woodruffe, and has been arrested, according to ABC 13.

Police tweeted: 'The Jazmine Barnes Homicide investigation has taken a new direction. Detectives are in the process of interviewing persons of interest. More details will be released as soon as possible.'

The driver of a red pickup truck pulled alongside the vehicle and fired inside, killing her on Sunday December 30.

Police had earlier described the suspect as a bearded white male in his 40s. But they added that they had not yet determined a motive, including whether race might have played a role.

It comes as hundreds of people gathered at a rally on Saturday holding signs reading 'Justice for Jazmine.'

Organizers of the rally also led the crowd in chants that repeated the phrases, 'What do we want? Justice. Who do we want it for? Jazmine.'

Jazmine's family had said they believe her death was racially motivated.

Time to bury this story, it's become "inconvenient to the narrative"
