#1  ach. Fectkampf mit schlogger. zehr gut.

#2  Does that even mean anything?
Posted by: Iblis || 10/18/2012 21:36 Comments || Top||

#3  Maybe, Iblis. It looks like badly spelled German, sort of.

"Kampf" = war, fight

"Mit" generally means "with" but can have other meanings, depending on the context.

"Schlagger" (not "schlogger") = a type of music popular in Germany & other European countries

"Fect" isn't a German word, or even a German spelling. "Fecht" (pronounced "fect" with a gutteral sound at the end), however, is a another German word for "fight" (I think in terms of one-on-one or possibly boxing) (I had to look that one up).

"zehr gut" should be "sehr gut" ("very good").

So apparently EE is trying to say "fightfight with music. very good."

Or some such.

I have no idea why.

Perhaps EE can enlighten us?

Afghanistan
CIA officer killed in Afghanistan suicide bombing
A CIA officer was among those killed by a jacket wallah in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, sources familiar with the incident said, in the latest of a series of fatal insider attacks that have undermined American efforts to turn security over to Afghan forces.
A NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
front man said the bomber was a member of Afghanistan's intelligence service, the National Directorate of Security, or NDS. An NDS front man disputed that, telling the News Agency that Dare Not be Named that the attacker had worn an Afghan uniform to gain access to the building in Kandahar.

A U.S. official said the bomber had served on the Afghan police force for six years before moving to the NDS. He said officials believe the attack was a Taliban operation targeting NDS officers. The bomber was noticed acting suspiciously but detonated the device before anyone could shoot him.

The bomber went kaboom!" as Americans and Afghan officials were arriving to deliver new office furniture to the intelligence headquarters in Kandahar's Maruf district, the AP reported. Two Americans and four Afghan intelligence agents were killed in the blast.

The Pentagon identified the U.S. military casualty as Spc. Brittany B. Gordon, 24, of St. Petersburg, Fla., assigned to the 572 Military Intelligence Company, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.

The second American killed was a CIA officer deployed in Afghanistan, sources familiar with the situation said. CIA staff was briefed on the bombing this week, said the sources, who would not be quoted discussing potentially classified information. The officer's name and role was not disclosed. The CIA had no comment.

Please detail someone NOT from your attached Military Intelligence Company..... possibly NOT an analyst. Get a clue Colonel, these are the people who are doing their best all day every day to identify and help detain the bombers. Please use them wisely.

Six Pakistanis being released from Bagram prison
[Dawn] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the Lahore High Court on Tuesday that six Paks imprisoned in Bagram Theatre Internment Camp in Afghanistan were being released.

A list of the six Paks to be released from captivity was also submitted to the court of Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan.

The judge praised the efforts of the ministry and observed that this was a proof of the hard work done by the petitioner (Justice Project Pakistain) to bring Pak citizens back.

The judge adjourned further hearing till Nov 15.

The judge was hearing a petition filed by Justice Project Pakistain, a non-profit law firm, for the release and return of Pak citizens from the US captivity.

The petitioner submitted that Pak citizens had been tossed in the slammer
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Bagram jail without any charge or trial since 2003. It said they were kidnapped from Pakistain and removed to the infamous US prison in Afghanistan.

Initially the petition was filed for the release of seven Paks, however, later names of more 25 prisoners were included.

45 Soldiers Injured in Suicide Attack on Paktiya Military Base
[Tolo] A suicide car boomer detonated his explosives at an Afghan and NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
military compound in eastern Paktiya province on Wednesday morning, injuring 45, local officials said.

The attack took place about 7:30 AM local time in Paktiya's Zermat district, when a jacket wallah in a car went kaboom!" inside the compound, provincial police chief Zulmai Oriakhil told TOLOnews.

"All the casualties are Afghan soldiers," he said.

The Taliban grabbed credit for the attack saying that several of their fighters had attacked the compound started festivities with Afghan forces.

But the provincial police rejected the Taliban claim of clash with security forces.

"There were not any festivities between Taliban and Afghan soldiers in the compound," he said.

He added that there were no NATO troops casualties in the attack.

Mainly US soldiers are based at the compound.

It comes after a suicide kaboom on the Afghan intelligence service's office in Kandahar on Saturday.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) office in Maluf district was attacked by a bomber with a boom jacket, killing two Americans and four Afghan intelligence staff, local officials said.

NDS deputy front man Shafiqullah Taheri in Tuesday dismissed claims the attack was done by a member of the agency.

Media reports have quoted Afghan and Isaf officials saying it was an NDS staffer.

"It was a suicide kaboom that was carried out by one of our own staff," a senior member of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The Isaf also said the attack was by an Afghan agent.

"I can confirm that one of the members of the NDS detonated a boom jacket that day in Maruf, Kandahar," Major Adam Wojack, an Isaf front man, told AFP.

NDS Confirms Civilian Killed in Kabul Raid
[Tolo] Afghan authorities confirmed Tuesday that a civilian in Kabul was killed during a night raid by the intelligence agency's forces on Sunday night.

Deputy front man for the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Shafiqullah Taheri said that a civilian was killed during an NDS special forces raid to capture a suspected terrorist.

"A civilian was killed in an exchange of fire between the bully boy and the security forces. The bully boy was hidden in the neighboring house," Taheri said at a press briefing in Kabul.
The man being sought was captured by the security forces, and is charged with planning attacks against Kabul Airport, Parliament and the Ministry of Interior, Taheri said.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
local residents of Kabul's Yakatoot area where the raid took place reject any existence of a suicide kaboomer or Taliban in the area, while the family of the civilian who was shot said he was killed in the family yard.

"At around 12:00 at night, they [security forces] came down from the roof and entered our yard. When my father came out, he asked 'What's going on?' They shot him. And my father died," one of the family members told TOLOnews on Monday.

"They didn't let us get close to the dead body of my uncle. They threatened to kill us if we came closer," another family member said.

A resident said the security forces warned them before the raid not to leave their homes.

"They said don't come out of your house otherwise we will shoot you. Then we just sat at home and they entered our houses [yards]. They were saying there were jacket wallahs, Taliban, but they couldn't find anything," the resident said.

The residents said that many houses were searched by the security forces in the area.

"They came to my house as well and locked all of us in one room. Their target was Taliban and suicide attackers, but this is not true," a fourth resident said.

Taheri rejected residents' claims that US or foreign forces were involved in the raid, saying it only conducted by NDS special forces.

Director of Afghanistan Research and Economic Unit Mir Ahmad Joyenda called for a thorough investigation into the civilian's death.

"Such incidents should be seriously investigated," Joyenda told TOLOnews Tuesday.

Policeman, Two Attackers Killed in Kenya Grenade Blast
[An Nahar] A Kenyan police officer was killed and nine others maimed Wednesday when suspected Islamists hurled a grenade at them during a house raid in a clash that left two assailants dead, police said.

The violence was the latest in a string of festivities and police raids on Kenya's coast, a popular tourist region where Islamists and a separatist movement have increasingly battled with security forces.

Regional police chief Aggrey Adoli told AFP several officers "were seriously injured," saying the attackers may be Kenyan supporters of neighboring Somalia's Shebab, an Al-Qaeda linked cut-thoat group.

"One of the officers died in hospital...eight others are still in hospital," Adoli said. One officer was discharged.

"We have intensified the search for more suspects, we want to ensure the area is safe," he added.

Adoli said police had rubbed out one of the attackers, while the other was killed by one of his own grenades.

The raid was carried out after a tip-off in the coastal Likoni region, just south of Kenya's main port Mombasa, and police recovered two firearms, two live grenades and ammunition, he said.

Kenyan police have in recent days launched a crackdown on members of the Mombasa Republican Council, a separatist group. On Monday two people were killed as police jugged

Libyan militias shell former Gaddafi stronghold town
Libyan militias operating alongside the defense ministry shelled the former Qadaffy stronghold of Bani Walid on Wednesday, with one person killed and another 18 injured in counter-attacks, a local militia leader and a medical source said.

The hilltop town was one of the last to surrender last year to the rebels who overthrew longtime leader Muammar Qadaffy
... who had more funny outfits than Louis XIV...
. It has come back into focus with the death last month of rebel fighter Omran Shaban after two months of detention in Bani Walid.

Shaban, from nearby Misrata, was the man who found Qadaffy hiding in a drain pipe in Sirte on October 20, 2011.

Libya's ruling national congress had ordered the defense and interior ministries to find those who kidnapped Shaban and were suspected of torturing him to death, and given Bani Walid a deadline to hand them over.

Elders have tried to negotiate a solution as militias have taken up position around parts of the town, at times clashing with local fighters.

"Bani Walid has been shelled since this morning from three sides - the south, the east and southeast," Colonel Salem al-Wa'er, a front man for Bani Walid's fighters, said by phone.

Without giving details, he said one person had been killed and that Bani Walid fighters had stopped a car which was carrying gas masks. A Misrata hospital source said 18 fighters from Misrata had been injured in counter attacks from Bani Walid.

Militia forces from Misrata and other towns, operating together in a coalition known as Libya Shield affiliated to the Defence Ministry, have deployed around parts of Bani Walid.

6 Russians, 1 Estonian Kidnapped Off Nigeria
[An Nahar] Kidnappers have boarded a ship off Nigeria and kidnapped seven crew members, including six Russians and one Estonian, in the latest such incident in the region, French company Bourbon said on Wednesday.

"Bourbon confirms that seven crew members, six Russians and one Estonian, were kidnapped during the boarding of the Bourbon Liberty 249, which occurred on October 15, 2012 in Nigeria," a statement from the oil industry servicing firm said.

"The other nine crew members are still onboard the vessel which is heading for the Port of Onne. They are safe and sound, and in good health."

The statement did not give the location of the kidnapping, but Onne is located in the Niger Delta, the country's oil-producing region.

The Bourbon Liberty 249 is an anchor handling vessel, the kind used to tow anchors for oil rigs or mobile drilling rigs.

According to private security consultants Drum Cussac, the incident occurred some 40 nautical miles off Brass along Nigeria's southern coast.

Saudi Jails 16 Qaida Suspects for up to 25 Years
[An Nahar] A Saudi court has sentenced 16 Al-Qaeda suspects to between three and 25 years for murder and attacks on the kingdom's oil facilities, the official SPA news agency reported Wednesday.

The defendants, 15 Saudi nationals and a Yemeni, were convicted of "carrying out terror attacks, targeting oil (sites), and carrying out liquidations," the report said.

The court, which handed down the sentences late on Tuesday, also accused the suspects of "establishing Al-Qaeda training camps," inside Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
Two defendants were sentenced to 25 years in prison, one man was sentenced to 15 years, and two others were each locked away
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
for 12 years.

The other 11 defendants received jail terms ranging from three to six years.

In June 2011, Saudi courts began trying dozens of people accused of involvement in deadly attacks between 2003 and 2006 after authorities launched an all-out campaign to eradicate Al-Qaeda in the country.

As Mexican security forces field units conduct searches for graves in Calera municipality in Zacatecas state, the Procuraduria General de Estado (PGE), or state attorney general Arturo Nahle Garcia, announced Wednesday that the genetic profiles of 33 different individuals have been made from remains discovered more a year ago, according to Mexican news accounts.

A news item posted on the website of El Sol de Zacatecas news daily said that the the remains from 43,000 bone fragments have been identified with the help of students from the Universidad Autonoma de Zacatecas after they were discovered in late July, 2011.
*blink* That's a lot of technique work. Kudos to the students.
Mexican Army units at the time discovered 14 mass graves near the village of Las Negritas.

The identities of four of the 33 individuals have already been determined, including a woman and two children as well as a man identified as Ernesto Cordero Anguiano.

Cordero Anguiano was reported missing in December, 2010 as part of a group of eight hunters from Guanajuato who disappeared in Sierra de Morones.

On Tuesday morning, a unit of the Proteccion Civil staff from Fresnillo municipality located 11 metal drums and several items of clothing near Rancho Los Angeles in Calera municipality near Los Negritos. The drums were rusted and had been perforated by gunshots.

A Mexican Naval Infantry unit was later called to the location to assist in the search for graves.

Nahle Garcia later released information that the drums did not appear to have any genetic material or remains, but were slated to be tested nonetheless.

The original find in late July was made just after a large counter-narcotics operation involving Mexican Army, Mexican Navy and Policia Federal troops ended in Jalisco and Zacatecas states in June, 2011.

Meanwhile, two unidentified armed suspects were killed in an armed encounter with a Mexican Army unit in Panfilo Natera municipality late Monday morning.

According to a separate article posted on the website of El Sol de Zacatecas, the army road patrol exchanged gunfire with an unknown number of armed suspects, killing two near El Rancho El Tejaban.

The description of the encounter suggested the road patrol happened upon a static armed encampment.

Following the conclusion of the firefight, soldiers seized eight AR-15 rifles, seven AK-47 rifles, 24 40mm grenades, four grenade launcher attachments, 217 weapons magazines, radios, tactical gear and one hand grenade.

Among the eight vehicles seized were one Dodge Ram pickup truck, one Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, one Ford Expedition SUV, two GMC Sierra pickup trucks and three Chevrolet Cheyenne pickup trucks.

Two motorcycles were also seized at the scene.

Gunman Shoots Canadian Border Officer
[An Nahar] A gunman shot and maimed a Canadian border agent Tuesday before taking his own life, police said.
Sounds like a faded love story rather than terrorism...
The shooting happened as the gunman arrived from the U.S. side to the Douglas Border Crossing in the west of Canada, one of the most frequently used between the two countries, according to a police statement.

The Canadian officer, a young woman, was seriously maimed but conscious and breathing. The border crossing was later closed in both directions.

The motive of the shooting was not immediately known.
Candy Crowley has already declared it a terrorist act, just in case...

Iranian-American Pleads Guilty to Plot to Kill Saudi Envoy to U.S.
Clearly a busy time for jihadis -- yesterday that little Bangladeshi lad was arrested for teaming up with the FBI to blow up the Federal Reserve building in New York. (No, of course he didn't know they were Federales -- he was evil, not stupid!)
[An Nahar] Former car salesman Manssor Arbabsiar pleaded guilty on Wednesday to conspiring with the Iranian military to kill the Saudi ambassador to the United States in a plot as lurid as any airport thriller.

Appearing at the New York federal court where he had been due to stand trial in January, the Iranian-American entered a surprise guilty plea. He faces up to 25 years in prison at his sentencing, which was set for January 23.

Judge John Keenan asked Arbabsiar: "Is it true that about the spring of 2011 up until the fall of 2011 that you and your co-conspirators ... who were officials in the Iranian military, that you agreed to cause the liquidation of the Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in their national face...
n ambassador to the United States?"

"Yes," he replied, pleading guilty to three counts.

Arbabsiar was set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
in September last year at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, triggering a major legal and diplomatic drama between Washington and Tehran, amid already tense relations.

He was charged along with co-defendant Gholam Shakuri, a senior member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's elite Quds Force, who is on the lam.

They tried to hire a Mexican drug pusher for $1.5 million, first to kidnap the Saudi envoy, then, in a change of plan, to blow him up in a restaurant he frequented in Washington, Arbabsiar said.

He had arranged for $100,000 to be wired to the United States as a down payment, not realizing that the supposed assassin he recruited was in fact working for the U.S. authorities.

"In Mexico we hired a person called 'Junior' who turned out to be an FBI agent," Arbabsiar said in court, although officials say "Junior" was in fact a Drug Enforcement Administration informant, not from the FBI.

A frail looking man with a grey beard and a huge scar across one cheek, Arbabsiar was brought in and out of the courtroom in handcuffs and kept under close watch while he sat at a table with his lawyers.

The former Texas car salesman, who has a gray beard and wore a dark blue prison smock and orange undershirt, seemed nervous and stumbled repeatedly in his answers during the plea procedure.

Asked his age, he looked confused and said, "58, I think."

When Keenan pressured him to confirm clearly that he'd intended to murder the Saudi diplomat, Arbabsiar finally said: "No. Yes, yes."

Throughout, Arbabsiar alternated between casting worried looks around the courtroom and repeatedly smiling, including at the agents seated alongside the prosecutors.

In the run-up to what would have been the trial, the defendant underwent a psychological evaluation. However,
the way to a man's heart remains through his stomach...
defense lawyer Sabrina Shroff told the court Wednesday that nothing had been found to hold up the plea.

"We know of nothing that would address any issue," she said.
Ay Pee adds:
Defense lawyers say Arbabsiar suffers from bipolar disorder.
Which does not mean he didn't do it, and is certainly something that can be handled by prison psychiatrists.

'9/11 mastermind' to wear fatigues at Guantanamo trial
Self-declared 9/11 criminal mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will be allowed to wear military-style camouflage at his Guantanamo Bay trial, a military judge ruled Tuesday.

What KSM and four alleged co-conspirators will wear when they eventually appear before a military tribunal has been disputed in pre-trial hearings, but his defense argued that he had the right to choose military garb.

"Mr. Mohammed is a enjugged
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
enemy prisoner of war. He wanted to wear the same type of uniform he wore while fighting for the US-supported Mujahedeen in Afghanistan and in Bosnia," argued military lawyer Captain Jason Wright.

The defense also said it would argue that the defendants had not been, as the prosecution alleges, "unlawful combatants" but soldiers and thus denying them the right to military-style clothing would undermine his case.

Prosecutors argued that KSM should not be allowed to wear a uniform for security reasons, but the military judge, Colonel James Pohl, dismissed this concern at the pre-trial hearing.

"Look around the room. How many guards are here?" he said.

"I'm not going to forbid the camouflage vest unless it is a US army uniform. The only prohibition -- the accused cannot wear clothing inconsistent with his confinement status."

US freezes assets of three Taliban-linked Pakistani men
[Dawn] The US Treasury said on Wednesday it had frozen the assets of three Pak-based individuals suspected of backing the Taliban and other jihad boy organizations blamed for violence in Pakistain and Afghanistan.

Treasury said it froze all US assets and prohibited any US individuals from doing business with Maulawi Adam Khan Achekzai, Aamir Ali Chaudhry and Qari Ayyub Bashir.

Adam and Chaudhry were involved in the production of bombs for the Taliban and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP), the Pak Taliban, the US Treasury said in a statement.

Bashir coordinated financial support for the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) in Afghanistan and Pakistain, it added.

"As these designations demonstrate, we will continue to work to dismantle the terrorist support networks operating in Afghanistan and Pakistain, paying special attention to those involved in the manufacture of IEDs (improvised bombs)," said David Cohen, US undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.

Shelling from Afghanistan injures three in North Waziristan: officials
[Dawn] At least four mortar shells were fired across the border from Afghanistan on Wednesday, injuring three people in Pakistain's troubled tribal region of North Wazoo, security officials said.
Dunno why they should be concerned. They don't control that area anyway.
According the officials, the shells hit a residential compound located in Hasan Khel village, around 30 kilometres east of Miranshah
... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
, the main town in North Waziristan tribal region.

Three people were reported to have been injured in the incident.

Both Pakistain and Afghanistan have accused each other in the past of repeated shelling barrages across the poorly policed border.

A senior Afghan army general visited Pakistain earlier this month to discuss the issue of cross-border shelling, which has soured relations between the two neighbours.

The two countries share a common 2,400-kilometre mountainous border, and Taliban and other al Qaeda-linked beturbanned goons are known to have carved out strongholds on either side.

Belgian al Qaeda recruiter killed in Pakistan: report
[Dawn] A Belgian-Tunisian al Qaeda recruiter who allegedly mentored an bad turban who rubbed out seven people in La Belle France this year has been killed in Pakistain, according to the US monitoring service SITE.

SITE said a post on an bad turban web forum on Monday announced the death of Moez Garsalloui, who had grabbed credit for one of the attacks carried out by Mohamed Merah in the southern French city of Toulouse

, SITE said, who remained focused on signing up bully boyz to attack targets in Europe even after moving to the battlefields and training camps of Pakistain and Afghanistan.

The post announcing Garsalloui's death said he was killed in a "raid", SITE said without elaborating, having previously escaped bombings in Miranshah

, the main town in the North Wazoo district of Pakistain's lawless tribal areas.

No details of the raid were given but the jihadi website announcement appeared a few days after two US drone strikes in North Waziristan killed 23 people, according to Pak security sources.

The death notice named Garsalloui as the leader of "Jund al-Khilafah", or Army of the Caliph, a bad boy unit that grabbed credit for Merah's attack outside a Jewish school on March 19.

A forum post from one of Garsalloui's accounts in April described meeting Merah in Pakistain and mentoring him, SITE said, helping him as he struggled to make himself understood to other fighters in Arabic.

Garasalloui and his wife, Belgian-Moroccan Malika el Aroud, were convicted by a Swiss court in June 2007 for running websites that supported terrorism.

He left Europe in late 2007 and was later identified as a link between al Qaeda leaders and a Belgian network that was disrupted by raids in December 2008, accused of planning an imminent attack.

5,000 Pro-Hizbullah Fighters Defending Lebanese-Inhabited Border Towns in Syria
[An Nahar] There are near daily festivities in Syria close to the Lebanese border between rebels and fighters loyal to Hizbullah, Agence La Belle France Presse quoted local residents as saying on Wednesday.

Activists have long accused Hizbullah, a long-time recipient of support from Syria, of joining the fight to crush the 19-month insurgency against the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Lord of the Baath...

The fighting is taking place in Syrian villages inhabited mainly by Lebanese, in an area where the common border is not well-defined and where many villages actually straddle the frontier.

"Our villages are being attacked by rebels who want to enter, and we defend ourselves," a resident of Zeita, whose village has seen frequent festivities, told AFP on Wednesday, requesting anonymity.

Clashes are taking place "in some 20 Shiite villages in (the central Syrian province of) Homs, which are inhabited by some 30,000 people," he added.

Assad is an Alawite, a sect that is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

"More than 5,000 gunnies are protecting our villages, and most of them are close to Hizbullah," the resident said. "Some 16 fighters have been killed since the start of the conflict."

Rebels also report frequent festivities.

"Hizbullah transports weapons and ammunition across the border in ambulances, day and night," said Fahd al-Masri, a front man for the rebel Free Syrian Army's joint command.

"They take the international road, without stopping at the border post."

Asked by news hounds in Beirut on Wednesday about Hizbullah's role in Syria, international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said: "Nobody has discussed this with me, not today, not previously."

Security Clampdown in Syrian Capital
[An Nahar] The Syrian authorities have tightened security measures around government buildings in Damascus
...Capital of the last overtly fascist regime in the world...
for fear of new rebel attacks, a pro-government daily reported on Wednesday.

"Security measures around official buildings and companies," Al-Watan newspaper said.

Concrete fortifications have been erected around the building housing the state news agency SANA in the Baramkeh district of the heart of the capital.

Similar measures have been taken for Damascus town hall in the Salhiyeh district, also in the city center, it said.

For several months, Damascus has seen a heightened security presence after parts of the city became combat zones for festivities between the army and rebels, and there have also been multiple attacks on government buildings.

Bombings claimed by rebels have targeted several intelligence buildings, the police headquarters in central Damascus and the army headquarters.

Several roads have been closed to traffic and the number of checkpoints has increased, causing widespread traffic jams.

The conflict in Syria has killed more than 33,000 people since the outbreak of an anti-regime revolt in March last year, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Syrian Forces Pound Rebels in North, Damascus
[An Nahar] Syrian warplanes Wednesday blitzed rebel targets around the strategic northern town of Maaret al-Numan while ground forces shelled opposition belts outside the capital Damascus,
...Home to a staggering array of terrorist organizations...
a watchdog said.

"The Syrian airforce have made no less than six sorties early morning, pounding the villages of Deir Sharqi, Maarhtat and Bsida, east of Maaret al-Numan," which rebels captured a week ago, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Violent festivities also erupted in Maarhtat, where rebels attacked a six-tank convoy of government troops as it made its way to reinforce the Wadi Deif army base, the largest in the region.

Maaret al-Numan is strategically located in the northwestern province of Idlib, on the highway linking Damascus to embattled Aleppo
...For centuries, Aleppo was Greater Syria's largest city and the Ottoman Empire's third, after Constantinople and Cairo. Although relatively close to Damascus in distance, Aleppans regard Damascenes as country cousins...
, Syria's second city and commercial hub.

The rebel blockade of the highway is preventing army reinforcements from reaching Aleppo, which has been the theater of intense fighting for the past three months.

At least five people were killed across the province of Aleppo and the city of the same name as government forces pounded the area and clashed with rebels who fired rockets into an army base, the Observatory said.

Further south, in the central city of Homs, nicknamed the capital of the 19-month anti-regime uprising, troops shelled the rebel neighborhoods of Khaldiyeh in the north and Juret al-Shiyah in the center.

Violence also erupted in areas around Damascus, said the British-based Observatory which relies on a network of activists, lawyers and medics on the ground inside Syria for its information.

Rockets rained on Douma, the capital's rebel-held northeastern suburb which was also rattled by gunfire, it said, adding that the southern suburb of Artus and Yabrud in the north were also shelled by troops. Heavy festivities erupted in the town of Nabk north of Damascus.
