Afghanistan
Nine guards, seven Taliban killed in Afghanistan
[Emirates 24/7] Nine security guards and seven Taliban were killed on Monday in a shootout at a telecommunications tower in northern Afghanistan, a police commander said.

"This morning Taliban attacked a telephone-antenna guarding post," Kunduz provincial policechief Abdul Rahman Sayedkhaili told AFP. "The guards put up a resistance. Nine guards and seven Taliban were killed."

Police reinforcements were later sent to the scene and one officer was also killed, he added.

Telephone antennae have become a target for the Taliban and other gun-hung tough guys since the hard boy group banned mobile telephone communications at night in areas they control.

The rebels maintain that the Afghan cops and their international backers in the 150,000-strong US-led Nato force track down faceless myrmidons using mobile phone signals. Residents say that all mobile phones go down after dark in Kunduz, a troubled province where the Taliban have a strong presence.

Monday's attack came after 10 people were killed, including three children, and 18 others were maimed when a cycle of violence bomb went kaboom! in a market in a remote town in Kunduz on Saturday.

The attack bore the hallmarks of the Taliban, with local police saying that the target was a pro-government militia commander, who died in the blast.

Earlier Saturday, Taliban fighters attempted to storm Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan, which is one of the country's main military bases for foreign forces.

The hardline Taliban were in power in Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001 when they were ousted in a US-led invasion after the September 11 attacks in the United States.

They have since mounted an increasingly bloody insurgency to regain power and drive out tens of thousands of foreign troops now based in Afghanistan to protect the Western-backed government of President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai.

Militants have been increasing attacks over the last nine years and 2010 is currently the deadliest for the 150,000-strong international force, with more than 640 foreign soldiers killed.

Seven foreign service personnel were killed in separate Islamic exemplar attacks and by roadside kabooms in southern and eastern Afghanistan on Sunday in one of the deadliest days for the 48-nation coalition in recent months.

Military Mayhem in Tamaulipas: Mexican Army Bags 4, Marines Rescue 10
Google Translate. For a map, click here.
Two separate military operations in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas had led to the rescue of nine kidnap victims and the deaths of four armed suspects, according to the Mexican daily Milenio.

Four individuals said to be members of armed criminal gangs were killed by elements of the Mexican Army near Ciudad Mier near the US border.

A detachment of the Mexican 8th Military Zone on a routine patrol was fired on by armed suspects. Return fire by soldiers killed four.

Seized were seven rifles, a handgun, 39 magazines and 650 cartridges.

On November 13 in Altamira, Tamaulipas in far southern Tamaulipas, a Mexican Marine detachment of 65 effectives rescued 10 kidnap victims at a safe house.

The operation began because an unidentified victim managed to make an emergency cell phone call. Electronic triangulation was used by the Mexican Secretaria de Marino (SEMAR) to find the location of the call.

Rescued were five men and three woman: three Mexicans, four Colombians, one each Salvadoran and Ecuadorian. One seven month old infant was also rescued.

Reports say the safe house was guarded by three unidentified municipal police officers with Altamira, who were arrested.

Acting on information provided by interrogation of the police officers arrested, Marines went to a hotel in nearby Tampico's downtown area and arrested an unidentified presumed crime boss and seized a number of weapons, munitions and contraband.

Seized were one M-4 5.56mm assault rifle, one AK-47 assault rifle, one Bryco 59 9mm automatic pistol, one Colt .45 caliber automatic pistol, an M67 hand grenade, 10 magazines, and 287 rounds of ammunition.

Vehicles seized include two Altamira Metropolitan Police pickup trucks, five luxury SUVs, a luxury sedan and a taxi cab vehicle.

Military Mayhem in Nuevo Leon: Mexican Army Bags 2, Rescues 2
Google Translate. For a map, click here.
Mexican Army operations in several locations in Nuevo Leon has led to the rescue of two unidentified kidnapping victims and two dead, according to the Mexican daily Milenio.

In Monterrey suburb Apodaca Monday afternoon, a Mexican Army moved to unblocked roads which were blocked by several heavy vehicles.

The first block was reported at about 1450 hrs on the Apodaca-Santa Rosa road in the Lomas de La Paz colony where a tractor trailer was used to block the road. A Policia Federal mobile patrol managed to move the vehicle.

At 1650 hrs near the corner of Villa Juärez and Dulces Nombres where three heavy vehicles were blocking the road, including a tractor trailer rig, a passenger truck and a bus all disabled with tires shot out.

Roadblocks are a common tactic with Mexican drug gangs and are used to block intervention from authorities in their operations.

At 1435 hrs Sunday in the 15 de Septiembre colony in Monterrey, a Mexican Army patrol encountered a criminal group riding in two vehicles who fired ion the soldiers. Return fire caused the criminal elements to flee on board one of the vehicles after abandoning the other vehicle. On board the abandoned vehicle were found three rifles, an unspecified number of magazines and two radios.

At 1630 hrs in the Constituyentes del 57 colony a Mexican Army unit rescued two unidentified kidnap victims and captured two armed suspects. Soldiers also seized four vehicles and two shotguns.

Finally in Cadereyta in the General Teran municipality Monday afternoon, a Mexican Army unit fought with suspected drug criminals at a location known as Estacion Vaquero, where two individuals, a man and a woman were shot and killed aboard a Ford Explorer SUV.

"Mexican drug cartel offers to disband
'La Familia Michoacana', one of Mexico's most violent drug and organised crime syndicates, offered for a second time to disband in return for a promise from the federal government to guarantee security and protect citizens in the western Pacific seaboard state of Michoacán, the group's home turf. If the government accepted this public commitment and complied with it, the group would dissolve, a communiqué distributed in the municipality of Zitácuaro claimed ".

#4  La Familia is the weakest of the west coast cartels, Beltran-Leyva, Sinaloa, Pacifico Sur, and Pacifico. La Familia probably have information that as soon as matters are "settled" in Tijuana, Sinaloa or Beltran-Leyva (through their subgroup Los Zetas) will probably go after La Familia.

The request, if authentic, will likely be ignored by Mexico City. Why waste resources protecting a former criminal organization when their rivals will probably wipe them out anyway?

That's my guess, FWIW.

Army sergeant receives Medal of Honor

WASHINGTON – An Army staff sergeant who stepped into the line of fire to help a pair of comrades on the Afghan battlefield received the Medal of Honor on Tuesday — the nation's top military award.

President Obama awarded the medal to Salvatore Giunta at a White House ceremony, making the 25-year-old Iowan the first living service member from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars to be so honored. Seven others have received the award posthumously. Giunta was a rifle team leader in eastern Afghanistan's Korengal Valley when his squad was split in two after an ambush by insurgents. While under fire, Giunta pulled a fellow soldier to cover and rescued another who was being dragged away by the enemy.

Hasan hearing ends in 4 minutes
FORT HOOD — Prosecutors took nine days and 56 witnesses to finish their part of an evidentiary hearing for an Army psychiatrist charged with a shooting spree one year ago, but the defense took just four minutes.

The hearing wrapped up Monday morning shortly after Col. James Pohl, an Army judge who presided over a series of Abu Ghraib proceedings five years ago, asked Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan if he had anything to say.

“No,” Hasan replied.

Pohl, the investigating officer for the Article 32 hearing, will recommend whether a trial should be ordered for Hasan, who is charged with 13 specifications of premeditated murder and could get the death penalty.

A post spokesman said a decision on a trial is expected at the beginning of next year.

Veteran defense attorney Frank Spinner wasn't surprised that Hasan's lawyers didn't call witnesses to the stand and noted that the burden was on prosecutors.

“Typically the defense doesn't put on evidence,” he said, calling the 10-day proceeding one of the longest he's seen in more than 30 years. “The prosecution has to establish probable cause that an offense was committed and the accused committed it.”

#6  Do NOT shoot him. Hang him for high treason. Bury his body in an unmarked grave somewhere on Fort Riley, preferably in the "receiving" end of an artillery range. Don't let anyone but the four guys that bury him know where he's buried. Use a back-hoe, and dig the grave 12 feet deep. Put him in a coffin and fill it up with ready-mix before dumping him in the hole. Threaten those that bury him with the same treatment if anything gets out. This POS needs to be treated like the POS he is. If he has a family, they should NOT receive any benefits after his death. If we pi$$ off a few muslims, so be it. If they start getting aggravating, give them the choice of equal treatment or out the door - from 5000 feet.

#9  Since he killed both military and civilian, the best bet is to convict him of the military, then turn him over to Texas to execute after a trial in their court. Only if somehow he "gets over" in a Texas court, will they then put him in Ft. Leavenworth for life.

#10  In CO it costs about $84K to keep a max security inmate for a year. What a waste of space and money. However, in Hasan's case it would be worth it to have his paralized and painful body live a long life in solitary.

#11  Moose,

Do you know if he has been charged by Texas yet?
Posted by: Rambler in Virginia || 11/16/2010 18:08 Comments || Top||

#12  Rambler, I understand the Texas Rangers took part in a joint investigation with Army CID and the FBI, but I don't think Texas has charged him. The crimes took place on federal land and Hasan is subject to the UCMJ, so juridiction is probably exclusively federal.

However, as far as I'm aware, nothing prevents concurrent jurisdiction if Texas wants to charge him at some point too. Good news is, double jeopardy doesn't attach when the charges are brought by separate sovereigns. I.e., if an accused is acquitted in federal (military) court, it's perfectly constitutional to try them again on the same charges in state court. Texas may be politely deferring until the outcome of the court-martial is known.

Procopius is correct (CAAF judges are civilians), and there's a high bar to get a death sentence in a court-martial in the first place (requires a unanimous vote of the 12-member jury). But: Hasan is the best candidate the military justice system has seen in a real long time, maybe ever.

Anyone know if he's pleading out or asking for judge-alone? Or is he taking the "lack of mental responsibility" route? LOL, good luck with that.

India-Pakistan
Predators Aflight Raining Death on North Wazoo
This is right on the Afghan border, near where some enemy were zapped returning from A'stan for R & R last week.
US Predators struck again in Pakistan's Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan today, killing 20 "militants" at a camp on the border with Afghanistan.

Unmanned Predators or the heavily armed and deadly Reapers fired at least six missiles at a training camp and a vehicle in the village of Bangi Darra in the Ghulam Khan area, just north of Miramshah, the main town in North Waziristan.
We're shooting a lot more missiles nowadays - somebody important must have a missile factory in his district.
As the factories have ramped up production, we can shoot more of the many targets that present themselves. Given the natural limit of targets is the 2%-10% of Muslims estimated likely to actually take up jihad rather than merely talk tough, and our limited manpower under arms, I don't think it's just that someone is influencing the generals in the wrong direction.
More than 20 "militants"
Tomorrow they will be known as civilians, mostly innocent women and children.
were reported killed in the strike, according Geo News. The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that 15 Taliban fighters under the command of Hafiz Gul Bahadar were killed in the strike. Several "foreigners," a term used to describe al Qaeda and Central Asian fighters, were reported to be among those killed. No senior al Qaeda or Taliban fighters have been reported killed in strike.
Nobody wants the job of senior AQ - life expectancy is too short - so we're working on propagating that mentality lower in the ranks.

#1  This is progress of a sort. Rather than a dispute over territory, the dispute is now over whether there is a dispute or not. And they say the UN is useless!

Improvised bomb blast in Philippines: 3 hurt
[Emirates 24/7] Police say an improvised bomb rocked the perimeter fence of a passenger bus terminal in southern North Cotabato province, injuring three people.

Chief Supt. Gil Meneses says suspects, motives and the type of device used in Monday's kaboom in Carmen township are still being determined.

The blast occurred as police and army troops were securing crowds attending the town's foundation day festivities, and as investigation continues on an Oct. 21 bus bombing in nearby Matalam township that killed 10 passengers.

Officials initially suspected an extortion gang with links to Mohammedan cut-throats to be behind the October 21 blast. But Meneses says that's just one of the angles being pursued.

The southern Philippines is home to kidnappers, extortion gangs and a decades-old insurgency.

Bakri Hires Hizbullah's Saheli as His Lawyer, Military Court Asks ISF Intelligence to Turn Him Over
[An Nahar] Radical Islamic preacher Omar Bakri, who was jugged Sunday in Tripoli by a patrol of intelligence agents from the Internal Security Forces, on Monday hired Hizbullah's MP Nawwar al-Saheli as his lawyer.
Bakri was sentenced to life in prison by the Military Court on a host of charges, including inciting murder and belonging to an armed faction.

The 50-year-old was found guilty, along with more than 40 other Lebanese, Paleostinians, Syrians and Saudis, of "incitement to murder, theft and the possession of arms and explosives."

The charge sheet, which was posted on the door of the justice ministry, said Bakri and 22 other fundamentalist Sunnis were "sentenced to life in prison in absentia ... for belonging to an armed faction with the intent to commit crimes and undermine state authority."

The remaining defendants, some of whom appeared in court, were sentenced to terms of between three months and seven years, capping a trial that began three years ago.

The case was opened in the aftermath of a fierce 15-week battle in 2007 between the army and Fatah al-Islam, an al-Qaeda-inspired Islamist group, at the Nahr al-Bared Paleostinian refugee camp in northern Leb as authorities launched a nationwide crackdown on Islamists.

Syrian-born Bakri, who holds Lebanese nationality, failed to show up in court on Thursday for sentencing.

Also Monday, the Military Court asked the ISF Intelligence Bureau to turn Bakri over.

It said in addition to the "well-documented" effort to create a vision for the Resistance's

military and security organizational structure, there is a detailed report about the telecommunications' issue that was handed over to the international investigation committee which was headed by Judge Serge Brammertz at the time.

Al-Akhbar said the 28-page report, a copy of which was made available to the newspaper, has been classified as "top secret."

It said the report, which includes phone numbers, was issued by the intelligence bureau of the Internal Security Forces June 30, 2006.

#1  Not only phone numbers, Dates, times, actors, and a bomb. Not too hard to put all that together. Years ago this was solved.
