Clashes in Fashloum
[Libya Herald] There were festivities yesterday afternoon and evening in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
's Fashloum district between locals and a militia group from Misrata which had driven into the area. One person, reportedly a local, was killed. He has been named by Buwabat Alwasat as Mohammed Ali.

Residents responded by blockading roads in and out of the area with cars and burning tyres.

"The fighting was between local young men and Misratis", said a prominent official in Tripoli who asked not to be named but who pointed out that Fashloum, the main centre of resistance to the Qadaffy regime during the revolution before the liberation of the capital, has been firmly opposed to Misrata in the current political crisis and on the side of the HoR and Zintan.

The district is now reported to be quiet but tense.

Bloodletting in Benghazi: Eight killed in assassinations
[Libya Herald] Benghazi's unprecedented wave of a brutal killings in recent days has continued, with eight individuals from the security services, civil society and other walks of life murdered in the city yesterday.

Head of Saiqa Special Forces
...Libya's elite army unit, insofar as they have one, formed from a mixture of paratroopers and commandos. The group emerged from a militia with the same name in 2010. It now numbers a few thousand and reports to the Ministry of Defence. It deployed in Benghazi in an attempt to control the carnage. As a result, it has been attacked and several of its officers murdered. The force is popular in Benghazi for its stance against Ansar al-Sharia group...
Investigations Unit Fadel Al-Hassi told the Libya Herald that in addition to the deaths of local activist Ali Al-Misrati and Sheikh Salim Bayu a further six Benghazi residents had been killed. The bloodletting marks another day of what appears to be a city-wide campaign to instil fear in Benghazi residents, orchestrated by myrmidons.

Hassi said a second political activist, Ezzedine Al-Badri, 22-years old, was killed in the city's Ben Younis district yesterday. He was shot near the Al-Sahra Mosque and died instantly. A friend, reportedly caught in the crossfire, is receiving treatment in Benghazi Medical Centre (BMC).

The city is still reeling from the deaths of 18-year-old blogger and activist Tawfiq Ben Saud and his 17-year-old friend Sami Al-Kwafi, also an activist, who were killed along with eight others on Friday. A total of 13 were targeted by liquidations in a single day.

Feras Khalifa Al-Keza, a former Arabian Gulf Oil Company manager and federalist activist, was killed in Hay Salem while returning to his home in Hey Dollar. Medical sources at BMC said Kiza had been shot several times and had been pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. It is believed that he was murdered because of his support for federalism.

Three members of the armed forces were killed yesterday in separate liquidations, Hassi said. Mohammed Omar, Kamal Al-Kikli, who was killed in Gwarsha, and Wael Al-Amali who was rubbed out in the Hadaiq district. Further details surrounding their murders are yet to emerge.

One other civilian, Muftah Ben Eid Ramadan, was also killed in the series of attacks. He was murdered in front of his Benghazi home.

Interior Minister Omar Al-Sunki, who is from Misrata, was only given his job on Monday, after the House of Representatives finally endorsed Thinni's cabinet line-up.

The torching of these two homes is only the latest of a series of attacks on the property of political rivals, largely in Tripoli, since Libya Dawn

Syrian killed by Tunisian border guards as he attempts to enter Libya
[Libya Herald] A Syrian was shot and killed and four others injured as they attempted to cross the Tunisian border into Libya, according to the Tunisian Ministry of Interior.

The men were fired upon by members of the Tunisian National Guard after the driver of the car in which they were riding refused a command to stop. Varying sources report there were between 12 and 14 people in the vehicle. It is reported to have been travelling in a restricted area.

Those shot were transported to the hospital in Ben Guerdane where one later died from his wounds and the others were being treated for gunshot wounds to their backs.

It is not known if those in the vehicle were migrants hoping to travel from Libya by boat to Tunisia, were Islamists planing to link up with fellow militants in Libya, or just ordinary Syrians seeing refuge in the country.

The incident took place on Saturday night, according to the Tunusian news agency TAP.

including the Yarmouk base and a militia transport pound in Salaheddin. An eye-witness to the overnight attacks told the Libya Herald that he first heard the sound of aircraft high overhead followed by anti-aircraft fire. Shortly afterwards there were kabooms on the ground. He added that there had been the sound of detonations further away but he could not identify their location.

There has been no reliable report of the damage caused in these attacks. If they were launched by the UAE airforce then it will have been on the same night that other UAE warplanes joined in the first US-led multinational Arclight airstrikes on Islamic State

Algerian extremists behead French hostage
[CHRON] Algerian snuffies allied with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group have decapitated a French hostage after La Belle France ignored their demand to stop Arclight airstrikes in Iraq, according to a video obtained Wednesday by a U.S.-based terrorism watchdog.

A group calling itself Jund al-Khilafah, or Soldiers of the Caliphate, had said they would kill French mountaineer Herve Gourdel after abducting him Sunday unless La Belle France ended its Arclight airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Iraq within 24 hours.

The French government insisted it would not back down.

In the video, masked gunnies from the newly formed group that split away from al-Qaeda's North Africa branch, pledged their allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State group, His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, and said they were fighting his enemies. They criticized the French attacks in Iraq as well as its intervention against radical Islamists in Mali.

Terrorism watchdog SITE Intelligence Group said the video had been posted on social networking site Twitter.

Gourdel -- a 55-year-old mountaineering guide from Nice -- was seized in the Djura Djura mountains of northern Algeria on Sunday during a hiking trip. His Algerian companions were released.

Algerian forces unleashed a massive search for him in the remote mountainous region that is one of the last strongholds of Islamic snuffies in Algeria.

The video resembled those showing the beheadings of two American journalists and a British aid worker in recent weeks, but instead of starting with clips of President Barack Obama
We're gonna punish our enemies and we're gonna reward our friends who stand with us on issues that are important to us...
speaking, it showed French President Francois Hollande
...the Socialist president of La Belle France, an economic bad joke for la Belle France but seemingly a foreign policy realist...

Islamic extremists surrender in Nigeria, Cameroon
[Washington Post] Military authorities say hundreds of Islamic murderous Moslems have surrendered in Nigeria and neighboring Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
following the military's recent victories with air and ground attacks.

The Nigerian Defense Ministry also said it has killed hundreds of Death Eaters in the northeast including a man identified as having posed in videos as Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
leader Abubakar Shekau.

The Nigerian army said it was victorious around Konduga town just 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Maiduguri, birthplace of Boko Haram and the headquarters of the military offensive to contain the Islamic uprising.

A Defense Ministry statement Wednesday said troops thwarted four attacks in six days on Konduga.

It said 135 Death Eaters surrendered Tuesday night.

Cameroon's defense ministry said more than 300 Boko Haram fighters have surrendered there this month.

Iraqi Intel Discovers Plot To Attack US and Paris Subways
NEW YORK -- Iraq's prime minister said Thursday his country's intelligence operation has uncovered a plot for an imminent attack on subway systems in United States and Paris. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad, and that it was the work of foreign fighters of the Islamic State group in Iraq. Asked if the attacks were imminent, he said, "Yes."

Asked if the attacks had been thwarted, he said, "No." Al-Abadi said the United States had been alerted.

In addition to the brutality Islamic State has visited on the people of Iraq and Syria, western leaders have voiced concern that the group would turn its terror operations outside the region.

US drone kills 10 in northwest Pakistan
[TIMESOFINDIA.INDIATIMES] A suspected US drone fired four missiles at a vehicle carrying Uzbek and local murderous Moslems in Pakistain's northwestern tribal region near the Afghan border on Wednesday, killing 10 of them, two Pak intelligence officials said.

The missiles hit the moving vehicle when it was about 500 meters (yards) away from the Afghan border in the Pak border town of Datta Khel in North Wazoo, the officials said.

Both Uzbek and local murderous Moslems were among the 10 men killed, the officials said, adding that authorities were trying to get more details. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

US drones often target murderous Moslems in North Waziristan, which is home to local and al-Qaeda-linked turbans who carry out attacks on both sides of the mostly non-existent border.

The strikes are extremely contentious in Pakistain, where many consider them a violation of the country's illusory sovereignty and express concern over the killing of civilians. The Foreign Office condemned the latest strikes in a statement, saying they were unnecessary given Pakistain's own massive ground operation against murderous Moslems in the region, which was launched in June.

Iraq
More Iraqi soldiers trapped by ISIS
(Reuters) - Around 200 Iraqi soldiers were trapped in the Abu Etha Iraqi army camp about 10 km south of the city of Ramadi on Wednesday, besieged by Islamic State militants. "There are troops behind us but they can't reach us because the whole area is planted with roadside bombs and land mines," said Hussein Thamir, a soldier who spoke to Reuters from inside the camp.

"There was an army group in front of us whom (Islamic State) destroyed completely six days ago," said Thamir.

"If we withdraw, will be killed."

Using similar tactics, Islamic State insurgents on Sunday overran an army base in Saqlawiya, just 50 km (30 miles) west of Baghdad, killing or capturing between 400 to 600 soldiers, a senior Iraqi security official said.

Former National Security advisor Mowaffaq al-Rubaie blamed the army's performance on endemic problems..."I'm afraid I will give you bad news, but it will get worse before it gets better, because the threat to national security is overwhelming and on Baghdad in particular."

Before going off on "the stupid Americans and the treacherous Iraqis" realize that many Iraqis were willing to serve the Bagdad government, but Maliki destroyed his own army. First he kicked out the Kurds, and then he kicked out the Sunnis. The Sunni had no place to go except join the rebellion.

#7  These are trained Sunnis. Many of which were trained by US and coalition forces, buyt who, as others note, were chased out of the Iraqi Army.

The Iraqi Army, or at least whats left of it, has been hollowed out to a corrupt nepotism filled Shia loot club, run by Maliki can his cronies for their fiscal and political benefit.

Notice that the typical encounter for Iraqi Army with ISIS begins with an IED or similar, then the very next step is that the officers abandon the unit, taking all money and goods with them, and frequently taking all the supplies & ammunition they can haul as well.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with the Iraqi soldier - its their corrupt culture and criminal officer class that has killed them.

We left before we could cement professionalism and equal treatment into their military structure, by both example and by force (making them stop the corrupt practices). This is the result of letting the Shia get their way without any check on them. If this was what we were going to do, we would have been better off carving it into 3 countries and being done with all of them except Kurdistan.

Riots Break Out On Temple Mount On Rosh Hashanah Eve
[Ynet] Police forces push back rioters into Al-Aqsa mosque while being pelted with large rocks and firecrackers, restoring order.

Riots broke out on the Temple Mount shortly after the complex was opened for visitors on Wednesday morning, the eve of Rosh Hashanah.
Happy Jewish New Year.
Dozens of masked youth, who set up blockades at the entrance to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, started throwing firecrackers, rocks and stones at police forces stationed at the Mugrabi Gate.

YASAM and Border Police troops entered the Al-Aqsa compound and pushed the rioters back into the mosque, as rioters continued pelting them with large rocks.

The troops removed the blockades set up by the rioters and locked the doors of the mosques with the rioters inside.

Four coppers were lightly maimed in the festivities and treated on the scene by police medics.

A photo released by police shows a police officer who was hit by a firecracker. He received treatment on the scene from police medics.

After order was restored, Jewish visitors and tourists were allowed back into the Temple Mount. One Jew was detained and barred from the area out of concern he intends to disrupt the peace.

Border police troops detained a 9-year-old boy who was throwing stones at an Israeli car in Ma'ale ha-Zeitim. No one was hurt and no damage was caused during the incidents. The boy's parents were notified and a welfare authorities were informed.

Palestinians Meet In Cairo Amid Rift Clouding Gaza Truce Chances
[Ynet] As Israeli-Paleostinian ceasefire talks take a break for the High Holy Days, Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, and Fatah focus on implementation of unity government.

Paleostinian factions met in Cairo on Wednesday for two days of talks aimed at mending a rift that could threaten Egyptian-mediated negotiations to turn the Gazoo ceasefire into a lasting truce.

The split between the Islamist movement Hamas and Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
' Fatah faction relates to several key issues including control of Gazoo. The disagreement could undermine any broader deal with Israel.

The ceasefire struck last month between Israel and the Paleostinians to end the Gazoo war including stipulations that the Paleostinian Authority, led by Abbas, should take over civil administration in Gazoo from Hamas.

But a dispute over the Paleostinian Authority's non-payment of salaries to Gazoo's public sector workers has brought tensions between the two main Paleostinian factions to near-braking point, raising the risk of a return to conflict.

Sakher Bseiso, a Fatah central committee member taking part in the talks, told Rooters Fatah and Hamas would discuss issues including security, elections and governance of the Gazoo Strip.

"The Cairo talks will discuss enabling the unity government to undertake its role in Gazoo Strip and (conduct) bilateral relations between the two movements," he said.

'Paleostinian-Paleostinian dialogue'
Moussa Abu Marzouk, deputy chairman of Hamas' political bureau, wrote on his Facebook page about "the Paleostinian-Paleostinian dialogue", saying: "The most important thing this dialogue needs is good intentions, mutual trust and national responsibility ... and commitment to what has been agreed upon."

Israel and the Paleostinians agreed on Tuesday to resume talks late next month on cementing a Gazoo ceasefire, allowing time for Paleostinian factions to resolve their divisions.

Egyptian security officials said Wednesday's meetings were occurring under the supervision of Egyptian intelligence but gave no details, not even the location of the talks.

Egyptian-mediated talks in July and August succeeded in securing a series of ceasefires aimed at laying the groundwork for talks on a broader deal.

Efforts to cement a permanent truce could prove difficult, though, with the sides far apart on their central demands, even if the dialogue among Paleostinians yields a unified position.

Azzam al-Ahmed, a Fatah official leading the joint delegation in Cairo, said on Tuesday that as well as control of Gazoo, Fatah wants decisions on war and peace to be taken at the national level rather than by individual factions.

Fifty days of conflict between Hamas and Israel some Gazoo districts devastated. More than 2,100 Paleostinians, most of them civilians, were killed in the fighting, according to the Gazoo health ministry.

Sixty-seven IDF soldiers and six civilians in Israel were also killed. Israel launched the offensive on July 8 with the declared aim of halting cross-border rocket salvoes by Hamas and other turban groups.

Arab Israeli Indicted For Training With ISIS
[Ynet] Ahmed, Shurbaji, from Umm al-Fahm, had travelled to Syria -- through Turkey -- in January, aiding Syrian rebels in a number of roles.

Ahmed Shurbaji, a 23-year-old resident of Umm al-Fahm, was convicted of illegally entering Syria and partaking in banned military training, including with the Death Eater group ISIS. The defense said that the court had no jurisdiction on the matter, claiming it was selectively enforcing the law.

Shurbaji's defense attorney dismissed the charge on military training because "there is no practical authority for an Israeli court to try the accused, since the military training was conducted in Syria and was not harmful to the security of the state. The military training was undertaken to assist the rebels fight the regime of a rival state."

The court accepted the position of the prosecutor, ruling that "leaving to take part in military training in any rival nation, in general, and in Syria, in particular, under the authority of ISIS specifically, presents a security offense which carries great danger to the defense of Israel."

It was further noted that the cross-border traffic of Arab-Israelis fighting in Syria and returning home, carries significant potential risk for the state in a number of respects -- use of advanced knowledge, import of ideology, import of military experience and capabilities, strengthening the ties between gunnies and global jihadi groups, and incitement to act against Israel.

Thus, the court ruled that "even a potential risk fulfills the necessary conditions. A country on defense should not wait until a risk goes from potential to actual."

According to the indictment served to the court on May 14 by a Haifa prosecutor, the suspect and three associates left Israel and infiltrated into Syria from Turkey to connect with rebel forces and help their fight against the Assad regime.

Shurbaji left on January 16, while the other three left to Turkey separately to avoid raising suspicions.

After entering Syria, the suspect and his associates joined an armed rebel group called "Jaish Muhammad" and underwent physical training at their base for a week; they were later recruited into ISIS.

During the suspect's stay in Syria, he also took part in military training for around a week, with a variety of weapons and rifles. He also took part in religious courses to spiritually prepare for future battles.

Shurbaji played a role in several of the group's fights: he discharged his weapon, stood guard at roadblocks, and joined military patrols to halt the advance of Assad's forces.

On April 20, the suspect returned to Israel, landing at Ben Gurion Airport, where he was placed in durance vile

The Pentagon released no details on the strikes, but said the operation was continuing.

As of Tuesday, according to US Central Command, the US had conducted Arclight airstrikes that hit at least 20 locations in Syria. Combat aircraft flew 64 sorties.

US Strikes Militant Staging Area In Syria

group staging area in eastern Syria.

Rear Adm. John Kirby said the target of the strikes was an area used by the murderous Moslems to move equipment across the border into Iraq.

Earlier Wednesday, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Arclight airstrikes in and around the eastern Syrian city of Boukamal.

Kirby told CNN that the US also struck Islamic State targets in Iraq, near the Kurdish city of Irbil and the capital, Baghdad.

Islamic State Redeploys Troops To Syria-Turkey Border Following Airstrikes
[Ynet] 13 US-led strikes hit border town Albu Kamal near Iraq border and 5 strikes conducted west of the city of Kobani near the Turkey border.

Islamic State has reinforced fighters who are battling Kurdish forces for control of a Syrian town at the border with Turkey in the last day, a redeployment triggered by US-led air strikes on the group elsewhere, a Kurdish military official said.

Earlier, US-led forces carried out at least 13 air strikes in Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria near the Iraqi border and five near the Turkish border overnight and on Wednesday, an organization that tracks the Syrian war said.

Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Reuters the raids near the Syria-Iraq border had hit the border town of Albu Kamal and surrounding areas.

The raids near the Syria-Turkey border hit near an area that tens of thousands of Kurds have fled as the militant group advanced. Abdulrahman said the warplanes that carried out the raids around 30-35 km (19-22 miles) west of the city of Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, had come from the direction of Turkey.

Ocalan Iso, deputy leader of the Kurdish forces defending the town of Kobani at the Turkish border, said more Islamic State fighters and tanks had arrived since the US-led coalition began air strikes on the group on Tuesday.

"The number of their fighters has increased, the number of their tanks has increased since the bombardment of Raqqa," Iso told Reuters by telephone.

Islamic State-controlled territory in the city and province of Raqqa was hit in the air strikes on Tuesday. He said Islamic State forces had advanced to within 8 km (5 miles) from the southern periphery of Kobani, which is also known as Ayn al-Arab - closer than they had been at any stage.

Turkish officials from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office told Reuters on Wednesday that neither Turkish air space nor a US airbase in the southern Turkish town of Incirlik have been used in US-led air strikes against Islamic State militants.

There was no other confirmation of air strikes in the area and Reuters could not independently verify the report.

Abdulrahman said it was not clear which country had carried out the strikes, although the planes were not believed to be from the Syrian air force, he said. Abdulrahman's Observatory gathers its information from a network of sources across Syria.

Albu Kamal, on the main Euphrates River valley highway, is one of the most important border crossings between Iraq and Syria, along a frontier that Islamic State wants to erase after seizing territory both sides and declaring a caliphate.

It links Islamic State's de facto capital Raqqa in Syria with strategic front lines in western Iraq and militant-held territory down the Euphrates to the western and southern outskirts of Baghdad.

Depriving Islamic State of the ability to cross the border freely in the Euphrates Valley could be an early strategic objective of the US-led coalition, which aims to defeat the group on both sides of the frontier.

Islamic State has exploited its ability to cross the border to score victories on both sides: fighters pouring in from Syria helped seize much of northern Iraq during a lightning advance in June, and weaponry they captured was then sent back to help the group secure more land in Syria.

The area around Albu Kamal has already been the focus of heavy bombing by US-led forces in the first day of their air campaign in eastern Syria. The Observatory said around 22 strikes hit the area on Tuesday.

"The people there, the activists, say they (the strikes) are probably the (international) coalition, not the regime," Abdulrahman said, referring to the Syrian government. "The strength of the explosions are greater. Like yesterday."

A militant Islamist fighter in the area said there had been at least nine strikes by "crusader forces" that had hit targets including in an industrial area.

A US-led alliance started air strikes on Islamic State in Syria on Tuesday. Islamic State, which has captured land in Syria and Iraq, launched an offensive against the predominantly Kurdish town of Kobani last week, forcing more than 130,000 Syrian Kurds to flee.

A local official in central Kobani said he had not heard any air strikes close to the town overnight, but that fighting continued between Kurdish forces and Islamic State, which has been trying to consolidate its territory across northern Syria.

Idris Nassan, deputy minister for foreign affairs in the Kobani canton, said Islamic State remained around 15 km from the town in the east and west but had advanced in the south to within 10 km after heavy clashes with Kurdish forces.

"Now I hear the noise of mortars in the south," he told Reuters by telephone. "Islamic State gathered heavy forces there. So did the YPG but Islamic State pushed them back."

The YPG is the main Kurdish armed group.

Redur Xelil, spokesman for the YPG, said Islamic State was still pushing to take the town, despite the start of US-led air strikes against the group in Syria.

"They did not withdraw from any positions and the battles are still continuing at their most intense level in Kobani and also in Ras al-Ayn," he said, referring to Syrian territory further east along the border.

Fighters advance in Syria despite US-led air raids

positions in Syria for a second day on Wednesday, but the strikes did not halt the fighters' advance in a Kurdish area where fleeing refugees told of villages burned and captives beheaded.

Syrian Kurds said Islamic State had responded to US attacks by intensifying its assault near the Turkish border in northern Syria, where 140,000 civilians have fled in recent days in the fastest exodus of the three-year civil war.

The intensifying advance on the northern town of Kobani showed the difficulty Washington faces in defeating fighters in Syria, where it lacks strong military allies on the ground. "Those Arclight airstrikes are not important. We need soldiers on the ground," said Hamed, a refugee who fled into Turkey from the Islamic State advance.

Mazlum Bergaden, a teacher from Kobani who crossed the border with his family, said two of his brothers had been taken captive by Islamic State fighters.

US Launches 2nd Round of Syria Airstrikes
The second day of U.S.-led airstrikes in Syria was much less intense than the first, when militant targets in the country's northwest, north and east were hit in 16 strikes.

Since early Tuesday, the U.S. military has conducted four airstrikes in Syria. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren, however, says the reduction in attacks is no reason to think the fight against terrorists in Syria is diminishing as the U.S. military collects more intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance information, or ISR.

“I think you’ll see a mix of what we have seen in Iraq over the last several weeks, which is the result of active ISR, armed ISR, where we’ll strike targets of opportunity when presented," said Colonel Warren.

The Pentagon says those "targets of opportunity" have not yet included individual leaders of the Islamic State or the Khorasan group, the al-Qaida affiliate struck by U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles late Monday. Regional media reported the leader of the Khorasan group was killed, but U.S. military officials stressed they do not have confirmation of his death at this time.

"We were targeting command and control facilities and if there were leaders in those command and control facilities, then we’re happy to see them no longer leading," said Warren.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group says bombings overnight hit Islamic State-held territory in Syria near the Turkish border, but the Pentagon told reporters the U.S. military did not conduct strikes in that area.

Colonel Warren also said that the military's intelligence shows U.S. strikes in Syria have not killed any civilians. This contradicts claims from the Syrian Network for Human Rights that about a dozen civilians died in the first night of strikes in the country.

The latest bombing is the 20th in Syria since Tuesday, when Washington and five Arab allies began the air campaign by bombing Islamic State training facilities and command centers.

Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby says the U.S. also struck IS targets in Iraq on Wednesday near the Kurdish city of Irbil, and the capital, Baghdad.

Asked about reports that the leader of the Khorosan group had been killed during overnight strikes, a Pentagon official declined confirmation.

"We are not making confirmations either way," he said. "We believe our strikes in Syria were effective. We believe that we were targeting facilities that will degrade both ISIL operations in Syria as well as Khorasan. We just don’t have a confirmation to make at this point. We don’t have personnel on the ground to verify."

The official added that the U.S. airstrikes are not targeting individuals but rather command and control and "if there were leaders in those facilities then we’re happy to see them no longer leading."
