#2  Happy Birthday America. In God's name we pray that we will become the land of the free once again. We shall not go quietly..

Do not go gentle into that good night

Dylan Thomas, 1914 - 1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Amen to that. Then again (giving myself a hernia here trying to keep it light for the 4th)...

Afghanistan
Seven Afghans killed in US airstrike
[Iran Press TV] At least seven people have been killed in a US Arclight airstrike in eastern Afghanistan.

The attack, which took place in Pashtun-infested Logar Province on Thursday, also injured three people.

Local officials said the victims were Talibs and a Taliban capo was among them. The myrmidon group has not yet commented on the attack.

US-led forces have recently expanded their aerial attacks across Afghanistan. Most of such attacks are carried out by US forces.

Hero British Army Gurkha soldiers Dipprasad Pun killed 30 Taliban single-handedly
[National Turk] A Gurkha soldier who single-handedly defeated more than 30 Taliban fighters has been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by the Queen.

Corporal Dipprasad Pun, 31, described how he was spurred on by the belief that he was going to die and so had nothing to lose in taking on the attackers who overran his checkpoint in Afghanistan.

Corporal Pun gallantry award is second only to the Victoria Cross -- the highest honour for bravery in the face of the enemy.

Corporal Dipprasad Pun, from the 1st Battalion the Royal Gurkha Rifles, was presented with the CGC during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, during which a number of other soldiers were recognised for their bravery.
Well done Corporal Dipprasad Pun, well done indeed.

#7  I heard a story from a Korean War vet.

The ChiComs attacked a position defended by the Gurkhas with significant loss of life. They pulled back and consolidated, and attacked again.

When they reached the Gurkha wire, the ChiComs were confronted with the heads of their dead, stuck on the barbed wire pickets staring down the hill toward the attackers.

Apparently the sight took the steam out of the ChiCom attack and they withdrew.

I do not know if this story is true, but I've heard it from a couple of sources...of course it could be battlefield mythology.

150 killed in Sudan clan battle near oil field
[Pak Daily Times] A battle between rival Sudanese clans near an oil-drilling site killed 150 people and maimed 100 more, state-linked media reported on Thursday. The fighting in West Kordofan state between two sub-groups of the Misseriya tribe "continued all day because of a land dispute near the oil field," said Mohammed Omer Al-Ansari, a tribal leader. He was quoted by the Sudanese Media Centre, which is close to the security apparatus.

#1  The Misseriya, an Arab cattle nomad clan, was the first of the Arab cattle nomad clans to pledge allegiance to General Bashir following the Islamist revolution of 30 June 1989. In doing so, they jettisoned the duly elected Sadiq al-Mahdi. He was the grandson of the 19th Century Mahdi, and the "Black Flag" Misseriya had been among the most loyal of his followers. In other words, they are a treacherous bunch and the fact that they are fighting among themselves is good news indeed.

U.S. Discloses Secret Somalia Military Presence, Up To 120 Troops

Nearly 200 arrested as Egypt marks 1 year since Morsi's ouster
[CTVNEWS.CA] A series of demonstrations and small bombings marked the anniversary on Thursday of the ouster of Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
, and authorities responded by arresting nearly 200 people as part of their crackdown against Islamists.

One of the bombs went off accidentally inside an apartment outside Cairo, killing two suspected hard boyz who were handling the explosives, the Interior Ministry said. It said the men were in the apartment with two friends who fled after the blast in the Islamist stronghold of Kirdasah.

A security official said one Morsi supporter was killed during festivities between protesters and security forces in Cairo's twin city Giza. Late Thursday, a homemade bomb went off on a train in Egypt's second city, Alexandria, injuring five passengers, another official said. The bomb was placed in a suitcase under a chair-- in a rare incident of directly targeting civilians.

Morsi's supporters had called for mass protests a year after he was toppled by the military and detained, but the number of demonstrators during the day was mostly in the hundreds, sometimes just dozens - evidence of the reluctance by Islamists to take on the security forces after a months-long crackdown that has killed hundreds and tossed in the calaboose
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
at least 22,000.

Thursday's demonstrations took place in Cairo, Alexandria, Assiut, the oasis province of Fayoum southwest of the capital and several other provinces.

Protests continued after nightfall, with skirmishes reported in the city of Suez, the southern city of Aswan and on the outskirts of Cairo.

Despite relatively small numbers, the protesters blocked some roads and rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud against the military and President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the former military chief who ousted Morsi following mass protests demanding he step down. El-Sissi was later elected president.

In other violence reported by officials, three separate bombings damaged cop shoppes but caused no casualties in Cairo's densely populated Imbaba district. A small bomb also went off near an air force hospital in Cairo late Wednesday, and bombs targeted a cop shoppe and a railway station in the southern city of Assiut, which has a large Islamist presence, on Thursday.

Two more bombs were defused on the main road leading to the famed Giza Pyramids and a stun grenade went off near a cop shoppe in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, causing panic.

Gunmen attack Culture Minister's home
[Libya Herald] Gunman broke into the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
home of the Minister of Culture, Habib Al-Amin, last night.

Neither the minister nor his family were present at the time, but according to the Libyan news agency LANA, the gunnies stole papers, vandalised the place, including shooting in his bedroom and at security cameras around the building, stuck a knife into personal photos and left a threatening letter.

Its contents have not been divulged.

Al-Amin, along with Justice Minister Salah Al-Marghani, was a key ally of the former premier, Ali Zeidan, and, since he was sacked, has played the same role with the present prime minister. As such, both he and Marghani have become a focus of hostility on the part of various revolutionaries and Islamists opposed to the government.

Two Gunmen Killed in Clash with Yemen Police
[AnNahar] Gunmen attacked a government complex Thursday in Yemen's central province of Baida, an al-Qaeda stronghold, sparking a firefight that killed two assailants and maimed three coppers, the defense ministry reported.

"An armed terrorist group" attacked the complex where the residence of Baida deputy governor Sinan Halqum is also located, the ministry's 26sep.net news website cited an army front man as saying.

The front man gave no further details about the assailants he labelled "terrorists", a term Yemeni authorities generally use for members of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which is frequently blamed for most anti-government attacks.

Taking advantage of a collapse of central authority during a 2011 uprising that forced veteran strongman President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, but he didn't invite Donna Summer to the inauguration and Blondie couldn't make it...

According to an Agence La Belle France Presse tally compiled from official and other sources, Yemeni security forces lost 374 personnel battling al-Qaeda, northern rebels and southern separatists as well as in targeted liquidations during the first half of 2014.

FBI: 19-year-old Colorado woman charged with aiding ISIS terror group
[ABCDenver] The FBI says a 19-year-old Colorado woman has been tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
while trying to board a flight at Denver International Airport with the goal of meeting with a terrorist group called the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIS.

A federal criminal complaint states that between Sept. 7, 2013 and April 8, 2014, Shannon Maureen Conley, together with others, tried to provide material support and resources, including personnel and expert advice, to a foreign terrorist organization.

Conley, a Moslem convert, was arrested April 8 at DIA after telling FBI agents she was traveling to Syria to use her American military training from the U.S. Army Explorers to aid Islamic snuffies waging jihad -- or holy war -- even though she knew that it was illegal, according to federal court records released Wednesday.

She said "legitimate targets of attack" included U.S. military bases, government employees and public officials, the documents say.

Against her parents wishes, Conley planned to marry a Tunisian man, who was fighting in Syria for ISIS, an al-Qaeda splinter group. She'd met the man online and communicated with him on Skype.

Conley has been charged with conspiring to help a foreign terrorist organization. She's being held in Denver County Jail without bond.

Rangers kill PPP leader's brother, a 'gang-war suspect'
[Pak Daily Times] KARACHI: Rangers killed gang-war suspect Suhail Dada in an encounter early on Thursday who turned out to be Pakistain People's Party (PPP) leader Irfan Durrani's brother.

Durrani said his brother's name was Salman Durrani, alleging that law enforcement carried out extrajudicial execution.

According to sources, Suhail Dada, a gang-war suspect was killed in an encounter with Rangers near City Station.

Rangers also recovered weapons from his possession.

Dada's brother Irfan Durrani who is the president of PPP Youth Wing South lashed out at law enforcement claiming that the slain individual was his brother Salman Durrani who was mistaken as Suhail Dada.

He alleged that Rangers kidnapped his brother from home last night and handed over the body early morning.

Durrani alleged that law enforcement carried out extrajudicial execution of his brother.

Methadar Police insist that the slain individual was a terrorist identified as Suhail Dada, adding that Dada was wanted by police in over 40 cases.

Police who earlier identified the gang-war suspect as Suhail Dada changed the statement saying the suspect's name was Salman Dada after Irfan Durrani identified the body as his slain brother.

It is pertinent to mention here that CID police had claimed to kill Suhail Dada in a raid at Napier area on June 18.

Police had said that suspect was wanted in over a hundred cases including murder, kidnapping for ransom and extortion.

The suspect also had a bounty of Rs 0.5 million over his head.

Meanwhile,

Iraq
Iraq army retakes Saddam's birthplace
[REUTERS] The Iraqi army retook Saddam Hussein's home village overnight, a symbolic victory in its struggle to seize back swathes of the country from Sunni Death Eaters.
They're not talking about Tikrit, just a village on the way there.
Backed by helicopter gunships and helped by Shi'ite Moslem volunteers, the army recaptured the village of Awja in an hour-long battle on Thursday night, according to state media, police and local inhabitants.

Awja lies 8 km (5 miles) south of Tikrit, a city that remains in rebel hands since Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original...
(ISIL), launched a lightning assault across northern Iraq last month.

The offensive to retake Tikrit began on June 28, but the army has still failed to retake the city which fell after the police and army imploded last month in the face of the myrmidon onslaught that also captured djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
and other major Sunni areas.

The military front man of embattled Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said Awja had been "totally cleansed" and 30 holy warriors killed, according to state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
. A police source told Rooters three turbans had been killed.

The birthplace of Saddam, Awja benefited hugely from the largesse of the Sunni dictator before his ousting by the U.S. invasion of 2003 and locals remained fiercely loyal to the man who would select his relatives from the area for top posts.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Clashes Resume In East Jerusalem: Protesters Hurl Stones At Police
[Ynet] After a relatively quiet morning, protests over the dead of Arab teen resume in Shuafat; Yasam police maimed, treated on the scene.

After a relatively quiet morning, the protests in East Jerusalem resumed on Thursday afternoon when dozens of Arab youths started sitting trash cans on fire and hurl stones at police in Shuafat.

The confrontations between protesters and security forces started on Wednesday after the body of Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir was found in the Jerusalem forest. Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
laid the blame for the murder of the Arab teen on Israel and protesters believe his murder came as retribution for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens, whose bodies were found near Hebron earlier this week.

The protesters, many of them masked, also fired fireworks at the police forces. A Yasam policeman was hurt and treated on the scene. Security forces were using crowd dispersal means.

An autopsy of the Arab teen's body has been completed on Thursday in the presence of a Paleostinian doctor at the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute, and the results of the autopsy has were given to police.

Defense Minister and former chief of staff Moshe Ya'alon accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of not combating terrorism with a strong enough hand, which Ya'alon asserted was the reason Israel's deterrence has eroded.

"A policy of calm for calm means we accept the situation in which boys on their way home are being kidnapped and murdered. It means we accept a situation in which live in the south are a danger and continuous nightmare, and mostly we just encourage our enemies to set the agenda for us as they please, and this is a grave mistake," he said.

"Why are we, a sovereign nation with a strong army, begging a terror organization to give us calm? We need to recover the deterrence in a way that they are the ones begging for calm. What are we teaching our enemies all over the world? That they can do anything to us and we'll turn the other cheek," he continued.

IDF Soldiers Jailed For Online Images Urging PM To Let Them 'Annihilate Terrorists'
[Ynet] Soldiers from Netzah Yehuda Battalion were violating military discipline; other soldiers posted photos which read "the battalion demends Dire Revenge™."

Four IDF soldiers from a haredi unit in the Kfir Brigade were sentenced to 10 days in jail Thursday morning, after posting images on Facebook opposing Israeli military restraint and calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to let them "annihilate terrorists."

There have been numerous Israeli calls for Dire Revenge™ since the discovery of the bodies of the kidnapped teens Gil-Ad Shaer, Naftali Frenkel and Eyal Yifrach on Monday, some using racist terms to describe Arabs. Among the voices were those of IDF soldiers on active duty, who protested the military's policy of restraint. Several posted a similar image to the four that were incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
, which read, "The battalion demands Dire Revenge™."

The four soldiers incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Thursday had posted the images via the Facebook accounts of two of them, which showed them holding a piece of paper that read, "Bibi, let us annihilate terrorists."

The four were found guilty by the battalion's deputy commander of violating military discipline.

The IDF said in response that, "These soldiers were sentenced to several days in prison in light of their actions in violation of military orders. This is a serious incident that is not in line with what is expected of IDF soldiers. Each case that is brought to the commanders' attention will be treated very seriously, as was the case in question."

Attorney Adi Keidar from the rightist legal aid organization Honenu (Pardoned), who represented two of the soldiers, told Ynet: "The system is trying to deal with online protests in the wrong way. The claims that the fighters have raised do not constitute an offense in anyway. These are good fighters and model soldiers. We call on the authorities to end the disciplinary proceedings against them immediately, and return them to operational duty as soon as possible. "

Honenu founder Shmuel Medad said that, "Israel sends its soldiers to the front, but does not understand their situation. The conduct seems to be that of someone who wants to look good for hostile foreign officials, some of whom are anti-Semitic and Israel-haters."

IDF Begins To Shift Forces South As Rocket Fire Continues
[Ynet] Officials says Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, behind rocket fire at Israel, claims attack is in retribution for death of Paleostinian teen Wednesday; as IDF prepare for possible Gazoo operation.

The IDF has begun shifting forces to the Gazoo area, in preparation of a possible escalation in the conflict with Hamas. Israel believes Hamas was directly behind the massive rocket fire at Israel Thursday morning which saw more than 11 rockets slam into Israel, with three hitting residential structures and causing damage.

According to an official source within the defense establishment, Hamas has begun firing rockets itself in retribution for what the death of Mohammed Abu Khder, a Paleostinian youth who was found dead in a Jerusalem forest Wednesday.

Police are investigating the possibility he was killed by Jews as a Dire Revenge™ attack for the murder of the three Israeli teens who were presumed to have been kidnapped but were discovered dead Monday in a West Bank valley.

The IDF began preparing for an escalation in the south and artillery forces training in other regions were transferred to the Gazoo area. Though the forces were not large in number, they give the IDF the ability to quickly respond and embark on a larger operation, should it decide to do so.

A senior IDF official said that the IDF was "preparing for a wider operation in Gazoo," and Paleostinians have reported that Israeli warships across from Gazoo's shores also seem to be preparing. It is possible the shift in forces is intended as a warning to Hamas.

It is far from certain that the IDF is planning to undertake a massive ground operation. Though both sides have expressed a desire not to escalate the situation, should rocket fire increase in scope and range or exact heavy causalities, the military will be forced to lock horns with Hamas.

Hamas rockets
Last Monday saw the first rocket attack by Hamas since the end of Operation Pillar of Defense ended in 2012, with a wave of attacks overnight Sunday and early Monday emanating from central Gazoo refugee camps completely under Hamas control.

There a number of Paleostinian factions active in Gazoo and though Israel views Hamas as responsible for any rockets fired from the Gazoo territory, the group generally avoids such direct attacks on Israel.

Ynet's senior national security corresponded, Ron Ben-Yishai, claimed the current round of escalation had yet to reach its zenith: "We can still stop the Gazoo escalation, but it currently seems unlikely. The fear is that tensions will spill into riots in Jerusalem which will further spread out.

"The norm is that before you take things one step up — you give some form of notice. The IDF needs to send the Paleostinians the message that they are preparing themselves for the next escalation, whether it is a large operation or even an incursion into Gazoo."

Since the Pillar of Defense ended, the majority of rockets fired at Israel — currently standing at over 200 in 2014 alone — have been launched by either the Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
or the Popular Resistance Committees. At time, smaller Salafist groups have also fired rockets or carried out attacks at Israel.

The fact that Hamas — which recently signed a controversial reconciliation agreement with Paleostinian President Abbas' Fatah movement — is behind the attack could mean the group has chosen to escalate its response to Israel's retaliatory attacks.

Over ten rockets slammed into Israel overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning, with four of them hitting homes in Sderot. The last two struck a house in the city which hosted a summer camp and another residence. The rocket that penetrated the structure used as a camp failed to explode and no one was injured.

Three rockets went kaboom! in populated areas in Sderot overnight Thursday, while one of them hit a student's apartment in the city and the other went kaboom! adjacent to an apartment building. Yet another rocket slammed into a wall of an outdoor rocket shelter, fracturing it. Some four people suffered anxiety as a result of the barrage.

In addition, two rockets from the morning barrage were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and the others landed in open areas in Sdot Negev and Bnei Shimon in the northern Negev, apart from one that hit a greenhouse in the area.

About two hours following the barrage of rockets, the IAF attacked 15 Hamas terror targets in the Gazoo Strip, including concealed rocket launchers, training compounds and weapon-storage facilities.is

The IAF also struck rocket-launching terrorist cells in the southern Gazoo Strip on Wednesday. The attack was carried out after a volley of rockets was fired on Wednesday afternoon at western Negev communities, continuing a general escalation in tensions. Direct hits were confirmed on all targets.

Arab Youth: I Was Beaten And Stabbed By Jewish Attackers
[Ynet] Attack on Kafr Qasem resident came shortly after bodies of missing teens discovered; victim says attackers called him 'stinking Arab.'

Moussa Abu Iyad, a 23-year-old man from Kafr Qasem has filed a complaint with Petah Tikva police alleging that he was attacked by eight Jews on Monday night because he was an Arab. The attack came shortly after the discovery of the bodies of Naftali Frenkel, Eyal Yifrach and Gil-Ad Shaer, the three Israeli teens kidnapped on June 12 in the West Bank.

Abu Iyad told police that the eight men brutally beat him and stabbed him five times in the lower body. Due to the severity of his wounds, he was taken by ambulance for medical treatment, and required 16 stitches.

Abu Iyad told Ynet that he was attacked after he left his home following his evening meal. During the month of Ramadan, which began on Saturday, Moslems do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset.

"After breaking the fast, I went for a bike ride at 11 pm on Monday," he said. "At the entrance to the city, several people in two cars asked me to pull over, claiming to be coppers."

He says that after he complied, the men got out of their cars and attacked him. "They swore at me and told me, 'You are a stinking Arab and you don't deserve to live. Arabs belong in the grave'."

Abu Iyad says he managed to escape, and heard one of them say that they should also flee the scene before he could make a note of the cars' license plates.

"The attack happened because the boys were kidnapped and murdered and everything that is going on Hebron," Abu Iyad said. "I don't fight with anyone, and everyone respects me. I hope the police find the people behind this attack."

Abu Iyad's close relative, Jamal Bari, branded the attack terrorism, and called on the police to find those who carried out it.

"We condemn this incident," Bari said. "This terrorist act and there is no way that this will pass in silence. The police must make every effort to stop these lawbreakers."

The police confirmed that they had received a complaint on Monday about an attack on a resident of Kafr Qasem.

"We are making every effort to find the suspects involved," said a police front man. "We are investigating all leads, including a nationalistic motive."

This is not the first suspected case of an attack on an Arab following the murder of the three teens. On Wednesday, police found the body of an Arab teenager in the Jerusalem area, and were investigating a possible connection to the reported kidnapping of a Paleostinian youth in East Jerusalem earlier in the day. Ynet learned that the youth's body was burned and showed signs of violence.

Southeast Asia
Police hunt international terrorists in Mindanao
A former Universiti Malaya lecturer is among five suspected terrorists militants hunted down by police thought to be linked to the terror groups ISIL and Abu Sayyaf. Former lecturer Dr. Mahmud Ahmad and stationery shop owner Mohd Najib Husen are believed to be leaders in the local terrorist militant group that is training and sending members to fight in Syria and Iraq.

Sources said authorities believed that the two men recruited and arranged for four Malaysians to be sent to Syria on March 5 this year, including Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, the first Malaysian suicide bomber. One source said, "They were also responsible for arranging meetings between foreign and local militant leaders at a safe house in Shah Alam since late last year."

It's thought that the meetings were to establish a Daulah Islamiyah Asia Tenggara (South-East Asia Islamiyah network).

The sources said that Dr Mahmud, also known as Abu Handzalah, underwent training at an al-Qaeda camp in Afghanistan in the late 1990s, while he was studying at the Islamabad Islamic University in Pakistan.

The third member being sought is former Selayang Municipal Council employee Muhammad Joraimee Awang Raimee, also known as Abu Nur. A source said, "He is a spiritual leader of the group which spreads militant teachings and encourages Malaysians to fight in Syria."

The two other wanted men are Darul Islam Sabah members Mohd Amin Baco and Jeknal Adil. Sources said that both men had undergone training with Abu Sayyaf since 2005.

Police believe that Mohd Amin was involved in the brutal slaying of five people in southern Philippines in 2011, the video of which went viral on YouTube. Mohd Amin and Jeknal are also suspected of kidnapping two people in Lahad Datu on Nov 12, 2012, the sources said.

Grenade Targets Tripoli Bakery in New Ramadan-Linked Attack
The taqfiris are feeling their oats...
[AnNahar] A hand grenade was hurled Thursday near a bakery in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, in the second such attack in two days.

LBCI television said the bomb targeted a popular Manakish bakery on the Ezzeddine Street.

It said the business was apparently attacked because it continued to serve food during Ramadan's daylight fasting hours.

A car parked in the location was damaged by the kaboom.

On Wednesday, a grenade thrown into a cafe hurt four people in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh area.

The attacks come after cafes and restaurants were recently warned against opening during daylight fasting hours in Ramadan in text messages and on social media.

Last month, Tripoli municipal chief Nader Ghazal called on cafes and eateries in the city to "respect the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan and particularly fasting Moslems."

The call caused controversy, with activists saying it was a breach of personal freedom. But Ghazal said it was a voluntary request, and that those who did not comply would not face punishment.

Leb is regarded as one of the most liberal countries in the Middle East, and even during Ramadan many cafes and restaurants remain open throughout the country to serve non-Moslems or those choosing not to fast.

ISIS Captures Syria's Largest Oil Field Giving Group More Resources, Funds
[Ynet] Militants from the Islamic State group seized control of Syria's largest oil field from rival Islamist fighters on Thursday, strengthening its advance across the eastern Deir al-Zor province, an opposition monitoring group said.

The capture of the al-Omar oil field gives Islamic State control of crude reserves which could be useful to its advancing fighters, and underlines how the al Qaeda offshoot has eclipsed its krazed killer rivals by capturing territory and assets across Syria and Iraq in the past few weeks.
