13 Insurgents Arrested in Afghan Operations
[Tolo News] The Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoIA) announced on Sunday that 13 faceless myrmidons have been tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
during a series of operations coordinated by Afghan forces in the past 24 hours.

In a statement released by the MoIA, "the Afghan National Police (ANP), Afghan National Army (ANA) and the National Directorate of Security (NDS), conducted several anti-terrorism joint operations in Kabul, Kandahar and Pashtun-infested Logar provinces."

The MoIA did not provide details about Afghan forces' casualties during the raids. And self-identified Taliban spokespeople have not yet commented on the operations.

The statement read: "During these operations, ANP discovered and confiscated light and heavy rounds of ammunition and IEDs in Laghman, Baghlan, Takhar, Sar-e-Pul, Kandahar, Pashtun-infested Logar and Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...

Key Peace-Seeking Taliban Leader Missing
[Tolo News] Efforts are underway to determine the location of Taliban leader Mutasem Agha jan, known as one of the group's more moderate figures, who went missing while on a trip to the United Arab Emirates, according ot the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

Mutasim Agha Jan served as the Taliban's chief of political affairs and visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) frequently for peace negotations between the Taliban and Afghanistan's High Peace Council (HPC).

Agha Jan, who was one of the few crucial Taliban figures that had direct contact with the HPC, lived in Turkey and recently disappeared during a tour to the UAE.

"The government of Islamic Theocratic Republic of Afghanistan is aware of Agha Jan's disappearance in the UAE," MoFA front man Ahmad Shekib Mustaghna said on Monday.

There are rumors about the possibility that Agha Jan may have been kidnapped. MoFA has not released a statement in regards to the rumors, but has called the circumstances surrounding the disappearance ambiguous and questionable.

Over the past month, Agha Jan had met with the HPC delegation twice; both sides had agreed to continue peace discussions.

In addition, Mustaghna touched on the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) reiterating the importance of the Afghan government's preconditions. If signed, the BSA would allow some U.S. forces to stay in Afghanistan post-2014 and ensure continued financial support from the international community for the Afghan cops.

"We hope that our preconditions are honored," Mustaghna stated. "If our demands are met, there will be no obstruction in signing the agreement with Washington."

...which coincidentally borders North Wazoo and Kurram Agency...
.

Local government officials said the attack took place in Khost city on Monday.

Provincial police chief, General Faizullah Ghairat, confirmed the attack, saying the target of the kaboom was a police vehicle. He added that Afghan cops did not suffer any casualties.

On Saturday, two coppers were killed and five others were maimed in separate attacks in the city.

Taliban have recently stepped up their military offensive against US-led and Afghan forces, vowing a new wave of attacks across Afghanistan.

The myrmidon group said it would use every possible tactic to inflict casualties on Afghan and US-led forces. They specifically mentioned insider attacks and bombings.

The announcement prompted Afghan authorities to beef up security in major cities across the country, including the capital Kabul.

Al-Shabaab block town borders in Bakool
[Shabelle] The governor of the Bakool regional administration for the Somali Federal Government Mohammed Abdi Talla, featured in an interview with the BBC Somali Service and claimed that there is a humanitarian crisis with insufficient quantity of food to feed the displaced population in the Bakool region.

The governor explained that the lack of provisions in Bakool is due to the blockages of the main roads by the Al-Shabaab

100 Aliens Seized In Mombasa Swoop
[Shabelle] More than 100 undocumented Democrats from Somalia and other countries were locked away
Please don't kill me!
in parts of Mombasa on Saturday night as the anti-terror operation spread to the Coast.

Hundreds of officers from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit, General Service Unit and other police forces accompanied by immigration officers swept into Changamwe and Nyali estates in trucks and ordered doors opened. They demanded identification papers and seized those without Kenyan papers but also took away those suspected to have forged Identity Cards.

Police claim most of those arrested had just arrived in Changamwe to hide after sneaking through the police operation in Nairobi's Eastleigh Estate on Friday. Intelligence sources told The Standard that besides aliens, the operation also targeted terror suspects, human traffickers and terror financiers based on intelligence supplied by some businessmen and the Somalia government.

Nominated MP Sunjeev Birdi said the Government should not relent in the anti-terror operation, adding that stopping the crackdown will "allow bully boyz to regroup."

But police also disclosed that a second raid on the Mogadishu Estate in Nyali yielded nothing because targeted aliens had already escaped before the operation. This came amid fears that Al-Shabaab

Yesterday, Mombasa Deputy Police Commander Sevelino Kubai denied reports that the aliens fled after receiving a leak on an impending police raid, saying that "the aliens we had targeted in Nyali were not available when we arrived and all their rooms were locked."

The individuals that sustained wounds were rushed to the Galkacyo General Hospital to receive dire medical treatment.

One student killed in Cairo University clashes
[Iran Press TV] At least one university student is feared dead in Egypt's capital, Cairo, after riot police attacked an anti-regime demonstration inside Cairo University.

This comes after police fired tear gas and birdshot to disperse the protesters at the campus in Cairo on Monday.

Dozens of people, including a journalist, were also injured in the crackdown.

Violent festivities have been also reported in the universities of the cities of Zagazig and Asyut.

A number of students were maimed and several others bussed to detention centers.

The protest rallies come hours after Egypt's former defense minister, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, officially submitted his bid to run for president.

Twin bomb blasts kill 71, injure 124 in Nigeria
[Iran Press TV] Twin bomb kabooms at a bus station outside Nigeria's capital city of Abuja have killed at least 71 people and severely injured 124 others.

Nigerian security officials say the blasts occurred at the bus station packed with commuters on the outskirts of Abuja on Monday.

The corpse count rose to 71 after several people gave up the ghost at hospitals across the capital city. This is while earlier media reports had put the corpse count at 35.

Medical sources said the corpse count is expected to rise as some of the injured are reported to be at death's door.

"We have a total of 71 dead and 124 others injured," media outlets quoted, national police front man, Frank Mba, as saying.

No group has yet grabbed credit for the attack. Similar incidents, however, are usually blamed on Boko Haram

fighters.

Abuja and its adjacent areas have been rocked by deadly bombings several times over the past few years.

Several regions of Nigeria have been also hit by deadly violence in recent months.

The developments come a day after at least 60 people were killed in two separate attacks in the towns of Anchaka and Bama in northeastern Borno state on Sunday.

Fighting erupts in Central African Republic town
[Washington Post] Residents of a Central African Republic town have fled their homes after Mohammedan fighters overran the place and killed several people, a local official said Monday.

Eric Kongbo said that the fighters -- former members of the Seleka rebel alliance and Mohammedan herders -- arrived in Grimari, in the country's center, a day earlier. They knocked down doors and set fire to homes and slit the throats of some people, said Kongbo, who spoke to a news hound from the bush after having fled himself.

He said it was unclear how many people had been killed because residents were too afraid to return to the town.

Capt. Ahmat Nidjad Ibrahim of the Seleka said Christian militias had attacked the town and his fighters were merely chasing them. He said his group had been fighting with the Christian militias in that area because they killed a Mohammedan herder.

Central African Republic went kaboom! into sectarian violence last year amid mounting resentment toward a government led by the Seleka rebels, who took power in a coup. The rebels were blamed for raping, torturing and killing civilians, especially Christians. Christian militias then sprang up to exact Dire Revenge™.

forces have intervened, but they are struggling to protect civilians throughout the vast country.

Kongbo criticized the French forces, saying they hadn't intervened in Grimari. Capt. Sebastien Isern, a front man for the French military, confirmed that forces had recently deployed to the town and were slowly stabilizing the area. He did not have any specific information on the attack.

Arabia
Eleven sentenced to 5 yrs in prison in Bahrain
[Iran Press TV] A court in Bahrain has sentenced eleven anti-regime protesters to five years in prison as pressure on dissidents mounts in the country.

On Monday, the court convicted the men of taking part in an unauthorized demonstration in a village, south of the capital Manama last year. The prosecution also convicted the Bahrainis of assaulting police during the rally.

The incident marks the latest in a series of harsh sentences handed down to protesters in the Persian Gulf nation.

On April 6, a court in Bahrain sentenced seven anti-regime protesters to 15 years in prison. According to Bahraini judicial sources, the protesters were sentenced for allegedly attacking a Bahraini policeman in the village of Dia near Manama during a demonstration in December 2012.

On April 2, a court in Manama sentenced nine people, including teenagers, to jail terms ranging from five to ten years each on charges of attacking police during anti-regime rallies.

The court said the protesters were among around 30 masked men who allegedly pelted a police patrol vehicle with Molotov cocktails in the village of Nuwaidrat in March last year.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of pro-democracy protesters have held numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa royal family to relinquish power.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syria Army Retakes Christian Town of Maalula
[An Nahar] Syrian troops retook the ancient Christian town of Maalula from rebels Monday, a day after Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
said the three-year old civil war was turning in his favor.

"The army has taken full control of Maalula and restored security and stability. Terrorism has been defeated in Qalamun," a security official told Agence La Belle France Presse, referring to the region in which Maalula is located.

An AFP journalist in Maalula said the Al-Safir hotel, which rebels had been using as a base, was almost completely destroyed, with a facade that gave on to a cliff having collapsed.

Downhill from the hotel, the Mar Sarkis Greek Catholic monastery was also damaged, its walls pierced by mortar rounds, and icons and other religious objects strewn on the ground inside.

Those residents who had not fled Maalula in previous fighting were nowhere to be found.

"The village was taken quickly. This morning we took Al-Sarkha village" on a hill overlooking the town, "then we came towards Maalula," a soldier told AFP.

Maalula's capture comes after a string of successes in the strategic Qalamun region, including the seizure of the former rebel bastion of Yabrud last month.

The regime has prioritized capturing the area to protect the highway linking Damascus to Homs that runs through the region, as well as to sever rebel supply lines across the border with Leb.

Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
, which has sent thousands of fighters to support Assad's troops, has played a key role in helping the regime secure Qalamun.

Maalula fell to rebel forces last December, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the regime and Hizbullah are now in "near-total control of the Qalamun area."

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said: "Pockets of opposition fighters remain near the Lebanese border, in the hills and in areas near Rankus" which fell to regime control last week.

Abdel Rahman also said negotiations are underway to ensure Zabadani, a nearby town of which parts are under opposition control, is not bombarded by the army.

Picturesque Maalula is considered an important symbol of the ancient Christian presence in Syria.

After the town was captured by rebels, 13 nuns were seized from the Mar Takla Greek Orthodox convent and held by al-Qaeda-affiliated fighters until a prisoner swap with the regime in March.

Maalula's fall comes a day after Assad said his government was gaining the upper hand in the conflict that began in March 2011 and has left more than 150,000 people dead.

"This is a turning point in the crisis, both militarily in terms of the army's achievements in the war against terror, and socially in terms of national reconciliation processes and growing awareness of the truth behind the (attacks) targeting the country," state news agency SANA quoted the president as saying.

"The state is trying to restore security and stability in the main areas that the Death Eaters have struck," said Assad, adding, "we will go after their positions and sleeper cells later."

The conflict began as a peaceful protest against Assad, but morphed into a brutal civil war after a brutal crackdown. The regime has systematically blamed all violence on a foreign-backed "terrorist" plot.

Elsewhere in Syria on Monday, warplanes struck parts of the central city of Homs that have been under suffocating government siege since June 2012, said the Observatory.

Activist Abu Ziad, who is trapped inside, told AFP via the Internet that there has been a marked escalation in the bombing of besieged areas, with the army "trying to storm (the rebel areas)... under cover of fire."

Earlier this year the U.N. oversaw the evacuation of around half of some 3,000 people trapped in the area.

According to Abu Ziad, some 180 civilians including 60 activists and more than 1,200 rebel fighters, remain inside.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Alamo, Davy was counting their remaining cannon balls and not liking the results...
the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said Syria has surrendered "65.1 percent" of its chemical weapons arsenal, "including 57.4 percent of priority chemicals."

40 Suspects Charged over Tripoli Clashes
[An Nahar] The military prosecutor charged on Monday 40 suspects for their involvement in the fighting in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said the charges were issued against them by State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr.

The 40 suspects include 18 Jabal Mohsen residents, only one of whom is in jug, Bilal al-Baqar and Raef Dandashi, Wael Ibrahim and 19 of his co-conspirators from Bab al-Tabbaneh whose identities are not fully known, NNA said.

The charges include the formation of an gang aimed at carrying out crimes, the attack on civilian and military institutions, participation in the fighting in Tripoli and the exchange of fire, the agency stated.

The other charges are killing, attempted murder and damage to properties and buildings, NNA said.

The suspects were referred to first Military Examining Magistrate Riyad Abu Ghida.

Several people have been detained since armed forces began implementing a security plan earlier this month to restore law and order to the city.

The army said in a communique on Monday that it has nabbed
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
Suleiman Mahmoud al-Ali in Jabal Mohsen as part of the security plan.

Tripoli has witnessed several rounds of fighting linked to the war in neighboring Syria.

Bab al-Tabbaneh is mostly Sunni, whose residents support Syrian rebels in their war to overthrow Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now...
. Jabal Mohsen residents are mostly Alawite, and loyal to Assad, who shares their faith, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

faceless myrmidons near the capital Damascus amid ongoing heavy festivities between the two sides across the country, Press TV reports.

On Monday, Syrian army units killed many forces of Evil and destroyed their hideouts in the towns of al-Sarkha, Bakha'a and al-Jibbeh in the mountainous al-Qalamoun region in the countryside of Damascus.

The faceless myrmidons who were not killed escaped out to Housh Arab suburbs of the capital or to the Lebanese border and the army continues to chase them down.

Army units also recaptured the historic town of Ma'loula, located about 60 kilometers northeast of Damascus.

"We regained control of Ma'loula just an hour ago. Just before that, we secured al-Sarkha after a series of difficult and complicated military operations because of the nature of the mountainous terrain. After taking the high grounds, we entered the town in a matter of hours and eliminated the Death Eaters," said a Syrian army colonel.

The Syrian army has been making more gains in its battle against foreign-backed Death Eaters.

Killing of Al-Manar crew draws condemnation
[Beirut Daily Star] Three crew members of Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV station were killed Monday after they came under fire in the Syrian town of Maaloula, as politicians offered condolences and praised those killed as "deaders."

Al-Manar identified the men as news hound Hamzah Hajj Hasan, 29, technician Halim Allaw and cameraman Mohammad Mantash. Several other crew members were maimed, the station said.

With a shaky voice, a teary-eyed anchorwoman announced the death of Hajj Hasan and Allaw, saying "takfiri
...an adherent of takfir wal hijra, an offshoot of Salafism that regards everybody who doesn't agree with them as apostates who most be killed...
terrorists" killed the men while they were covering the Syrian army takeover of Maaloula, a predominantly Christian town not far from the Lebanese border.

The station also broadcast footage of the bullet-riddled four-wheel-drive vehicle the three men were traveling in when the attack took place. The vehicle was marked press.

Offering condolences to their families, Al-Manar described the men as "deaders of freedom."

Minutes later, the station announced that Mantash had died of wounds sustained during the attack.

The Hezbollah TV channel reported earlier in the day that its crew had come under fire. "The Al-Manar team was shot at by gangs when [they] were covering the Syrian army's takeover of the Maaloula town in Qalamoun," the report said.

The shooting came hours after Hezbollah-backed Syrian forces recaptured at least three border towns including Maaloula, in Qalamoun, a mountainous region bordering Leb.

Al-Manar television has provided extensive coverage of the battles in the area in recent months, even accompanying and interviewing Syrian soldiers as the country's army launched an offensive to root out rebel groups.

Hasan Hamzah, Hajj Hasan's colleague at Al-Manar, said he would miss him the most, as the two were very close to each other. "We sat next to each other in the newsroom and shared lots of things, we used the same telephone ... and we shared the same lockers," Hamzah told The Daily Star sadly. "Just today, I wore his shirt and I am still wearing it right now."

Hamzah said that Hajj Hasan knew he was heading to dangerous places. "He was perseverant and knew what he wanted. His life has ended today ... his death is a loss, but he is one of a series of Al-Manar deaders, I congratulate him," Hamzah added.

Al-Manar General Manager Ibrahim Farhat said a remaining group of gunnies had hidden in Maaloula and shot at Al-Manar's two vehicles, which he said were among other media outlets covering ground developments.

During a brief televised news conference, Farhat declined to say whether Al-Manar was a target. "We will not hesitate to offer deaders for the sake of the profession ... they were carrying out their professional duty in covering events," he said.

Farhat also said that the bodies of the men were pulled from the scene and that they would be buried Tuesday in Leb.

Lebanese officials condemned the killing.

"The liquidation of members of media is a coward act," President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
tweeted.

leader Michel Aoun

extended his condolences to Al-Manar. "We are all blessed by the martyrdom of the deaders ... and we share the pains of their families," Aoun said.

Finance Minister Ali Hasan Khalil, from Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri

's Amal Movement, paid his respects to Al-Manar, hailing the job of the station's staff as "heroic."

But the Future parliamentary bloc of Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's assassination. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
said the death of the Al-Manar crew members was the result of Hezbollah's continued military involvement in Syria.

In a statement after its regular meeting, the bloc said Leb would only witness actual stability when Hezbollah withdrew from Syria.

Iran's Ambassador to Leb Ghazanfar Roknabadi strongly condemned the attack.

Syria's Information Minister Omran Zoabi said he congratulated Al-Manar for the three deaders, wishing the maimed a speedy recovery.
