North Las Vegas DMV Breakin: ID Info, Driver's License Blanks Taken
Bad:
Personal information from more than 8,900 people was stolen when thieves broke into a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office, officials said Friday. A computer taken during the break-in contained names, ages, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, photographs and signatures of southern Nevada residents who obtained driver's licenses between Nov. 25 and March 4 at the North Las Vegas office, state DMV chief Ginny Lewis said. "The state is extremely sorry that this has happened," Lewis said. "Those motorists whose data was on that computer need to know their personal information has been compromised."
Worse:
The DMV had previously maintained that the information on the computer stolen in Monday's break-in was encrypted, making it virtually useless to thieves. But Lewis said Friday that Digimarc Corp., the Beaverton, Ore.,-based company that provides digital driver's licenses in Nevada, told her Thursday the information was not encrypted, and was readily accessible. Miz Nakajima, Digimarc spokeswoman, said Friday she could not comment on specifics about state DMV customers or the Nevada theft. The publicly traded company provides a service Nakajima called "digital watermarking" to motor vehicle departments in 34 states and the District of Columbia. All 21 Nevada DMV licensing stations around the state were ordered by the end of the day Friday to remove personal information from computers to prevent a recurrence, Lewis said.

The Nevada DMV planned to send certified letters by next week informing the 8,900 drivers who obtained licenses at the Donovan Way office in North Las Vegas that their personal information was in the hands of thieves. The licenses of each motorist will be canceled and a new license will be issued with new identification numbers, Lewis said during a news conference outside the office at the end of a remote industrial road wedged between Interstate 15 and the Union Pacific railroad tracks. Paul Masto, assistant special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service office in Las Vegas, said the agency was investigating. He urged those affected to take precautions against identity theft. "That's the juicy stuff - the dates of birth, the Social Security numbers," Masto said. "They have that information. There's nothing we can do about that." The Nevada DMV data theft comes after personal information was stolen from a database owned by the information broker LexisNexis and from the giant data broker ChoicePoint Inc. Another data loss affected some 1.2 million federal employees with Bank of America charge cards. Police said thieves smashed a vehicle through a back wall of the office and escaped before police arrived a half-hour later.

WORST:

In addition to the computer, thieves took a camera, 1,700 license blanks and laminated plastic covers bearing the embossed state seal. Authorities said the equipment could be used to manufacture licenses virtually indistinguishable from legitimate Nevada driver's licenses.
The state's top homeland security adviser said he notified federal Homeland Security officials about the break-in.
sure...just a typical breakin...crap

#1  ..at the North Las Vegas office, state DMV chief Ginny Lewis said.

I seem to remember that North Las Vegas is the more seedy part of town, relatively speaking. Can anyone confirm this?

But Lewis said Friday that Digimarc Corp., the Beaverton, Ore.,-based company that provides digital driver’s licenses in Nevada, told her Thursday the information was not encrypted, and was readily accessible.

Absolute, utter incompetence. Time to give the competition another look.

n addition to the computer, thieves took a camera, 1,700 license blanks and laminated plastic covers bearing the embossed state seal. Authorities said the equipment could be used to manufacture licenses virtually indistinguishable from legitimate Nevada driver’s licenses.

Assuming these are standard licenses, swiping them through a magnetic strip reader may expose them to be counterfeit, if the thieves aren't technically savvy.

#2  So now would be a good time for Nevada to quickly redesign their licenses, and require everyone to come in to get the replacement. Put a fingerprint or something on the replacement as well, for future reference, if possible.

Make the stolen ones obsolete, and maintain a strict credit watch on the stolen identities. And get the information encrypted NOW!

#3  Rule Number One in IT security: There is no IT security without physical security. You can't claim secure data if thieves can break in and steal the computer that holds it.

#4  North Las Vegas is indeed very seedy and is a good place to avoid.

#5  Bomb and Trailing wife. Just getting ahold of someone's social security is enough to destroy and innocent victim...I worked with a woman who had this happen to her and the criminal's committed crime's in other states (New York, Washington D.C. Virginia)

Three year's ago my co -worker was pulled over for speeding and the cop ran her plate, got out of his crusier with gun drawn and ordered her out of her car at gun point explaining that she had to go to the station....5 outstanding warrent's were out on her over the last three year's- armed robbery, breaking and entering----major crime's. It was hard to get ahold of an attorney on a Sunday, she was finally released after being shackled at the station etc and did have to go to court to clear her name and explained what had happened, it did end up costing a few thousand...they have never caught the true criminal to this day!

#6  There is some regularity in New Mexico of MVD personnel selling blank drivers licenses. Low civil service pay [state being #48 or 47 in per capita income] combined with cronyism and nepotism contribute significantly to the cronic problem.

#10  You can't claim secure data if thieves can break in and steal the computer that holds it.

Ah, but data and access can be encrypted to a prohibitively high level, can it not? Deeply encrypted data would probably be practically useless to just about anyone.

What I'm wondering tho, is why data of the sensitive kind is being stored in a computer in a DMV office? Why can't they give the DMV drones dumb terminals with no hard storage and link up to a centralized information center located in the state's seat of government?

Southeast Asia
Indonesia ID's JI member
Philippine police said on Friday that a Malaysian arrested last year at a southern port turned out to be an Indonesian suspected to have played a role in the bombing outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta last year. Chief Superintendent Ismael Rafanan, the police intelligence chief, said a team of anti-terrorism experts from Indonesia helped them identify Didi Deskiarna, a suspected member of the regional Muslim militant network Jemaah Islamiah (JI). "Without the help of our Indonesian friends, we would not be able to identify a key suspect in the Jakarta bombings," Rafanan told reporters. "Deskiarna had identified himself as a Malaysian when he was caught in Zamboanga City."

The Indonesian experts are in the Philippines to interview three foreigners suspected of links with Jemaah Islamiah. Deskiarna, who initially identified himself as Ted Yolanda, was arrested at the Zamboanga City port last December along with Indonesians Mohammad Yusuf Karim, Mohammad Nassir Hamid and Filipino Muhair dela Merced, a suspected member of the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group. "Deskiarna was forced to admit his real identity after our friends from Jakarta confronted him," Rafanan said. Deskiarna was also suspected to have played a key role in the bombing of the Philippine embassy in Jakarta in August 2000 that injured a Filipino diplomat.

Police authorities said the three Indonesian militants and a Filipino contact were on their way to a JI training camp at the jungle base of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in central Mindanao region. Some $7,000 in cash and manuals for making car bombs were seized from them, the police said.

5 Filippino troops killed, no cease-fire
Five soldiers were killed and four others wounded in the latest military clashes with Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) renegades and their Abu Sayyaf allies in Sulu. An armored personnel carrier was also damaged in the three-hour fighting in the outskirts of Parang town, said Brig. Gen. Agustin Dema-ala, Sulu military commander. An undetermined number of rebels were also killed in the battle that broke out Thursday near Water Point Lanao Dakula complex, the rebel stronghold seized by troops last week, said Lt. Col. Buenaventura Pascual, Armed Forces spokesman.

Lt. Gen. Alberto Braganza, Armed Forces Southern Command chief, said troops have been conducting mop-up operations in Lanao Dakula since Tuesday. Meanwhile, police and military agents are investigating whether the arms seized Thursday on a passenger vessel from Manila had been intended for MNLF renegades fighting troops in Jolo. Security forces arrested a suspect who was supposed to pick up the contraband consisting of five M-16 rifles, spare parts and magazines. Police and troops are also tracking down the consignees, who were identified as Roberto and Rodolfo Macapili.

Earlier Thursday, five rebels were slain and five others captured in a clash in Patikul town. The military is pressing its campaign to hunt down the rebels who launched an uprising in Jolo on Feb. 7, attacking military outposts and sparking over a week of clashes that left about a hundred soldiers and rebels dead. The uprising was launched by Habier Malik and other suspected followers of former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao governor Nur Misuari, who is detained at Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna on rebellion charges. The MNLF renegades are believed to be allied with the Abu Sayyaf, a kidnapping gang linked by the Philippine and US governments to the al-Qaeda terrorist network of Saudi Arabian dissident Osama bin Laden. President Arroyo has ruled out a ceasefire with MNLF renegades and ordered the military to hunt them down. The military previously said it captured the camps of the MNLF renegades and their Abu Sayyaf allies, but the guerrillas have scattered into small groups and are still resisting the military.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
UN envoy: Syria provides timetable for Lebanon pullout
Syrian President Bashar al Assad reiterated his commitment to withdrawing all Syrian forces and intelligence agents from Lebanon, a U.N. envoy said Saturday, indicating that he had received a timetable for the pullout. U.N. envoy Terje Roed-Larsen did not give any details about timing after meeting with Assad in the northern city of Aleppo but said he would discuss the issue at the United Nations next week. "I will present U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan with further details of the timetable for a complete Syrian pullout from Lebanon upon arrival in New York early next week," Roed-Larsen said in a statement read to The Associated Press by spokesman Najib Friji.

Roed-Larsen arrived in Syria from Lebanon earlier Saturday and held a meeting with Assad that was attended by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and his deputy Walid al-Moualem, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The envoy said the meeting was "very constructive" and he was "much encouraged by President Assad's commitment to the full implementation" of the U.N. Security Council resolution calling for Syria's immediate withdrawal from Lebanon. Larsen said the redeployment to the Bekaa Valley before the end of this month will include the withdrawal of "a significant number of these Syrian troops, including intelligence," from Lebanon into Syria. "The second stage will lead to a complete and full withdrawal of all Syrian military personnel and the intelligence apparatus," the U.N. envoy said, adding that he will continue his dialogue with Assad and other concerned parties.

#2  Here's the link Mrs. D mentioned (good to see New Sisyphus getting some publicity).
I hope optimism is warranted here. For better or worse, it looks like we'll take Syria first, then go for Iran later. If Damascus lost its patron and puppet-master, Assad would have little choice but to pull a Gaddafi-esque 180. Between Iran and N. Korea, I fear we're setting a precident of "Once you go nuclear, Uncle Sam sits on his hands and lets the diplomats jibber-jabber."

Last Syrian troops leave Lebanon
A 62-vehicle convoy carrying Syrian troops and equipment withdrawn from northern Lebanon crossed the border early Saturday in a heavy snow as Syrians at the frontier welcomed the troops home, throwing flowers and chanting, "We love Syria!" But intelligence agents remained in nine offices in northern Lebanon, and the U.N. Mideast envoy said Syria needs to produce a timetable for a full withdrawal from the rest of Lebanon.

The civilians gathered under the roof of a Syrian customs checkpoint, seeking shelter from the cold and heavy snow that delayed the crossing for several hours. They waved Syrian flags and blew whistles. Some handed flowers to the soldiers, while others threw rice, rose petals and sweets in a traditional Arab welcome. Some in the crowd sang national songs to the beat of drums. The convoy crossed the border at Jedeidet Yabous, 30 miles from Damascus and 62 miles east of Beirut, the Lebanese capital.

Under international pressure, Syria this week began pulling its 14,000 forces back to the eastern Bekaa Valley. It is to negotiate with the government on their complete withdrawal from Lebanon later. Despite the pullout from the north of Lebanon, nine Syrian intelligence offices remain open there, including in the towns of Tripoli, Akkar, Minye and Amyoun. Plainclothes intelligence agents operate from the guarded offices in apartment buildings and deal directly with Lebanese.

#4  I'm surprized at the broad based partnership that the supposedly unilateralist Bush has put together on this.

We have had major assistance here from:

- the UN
- France
- Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan
- Russia

of course much of the assistance is due to Assad's own failings but still, any reasonable person should give Bush a lot of credit on this

Iraq-Jordan
Iraq: Eight dead as Ukraine starts to pullback forces
Gunmen shot dead three Iraqi policemen and injured a third Saturday at a funeral procession in the northern city of Mosul, police said, while Ukraine withdrew 150 servicemen from Iraq, commencing a gradual pullout that officials have said will be completed by October. The attack occurred as police were taking part in a procession for a colleague's wife and two children who died in a roadside bomb attack in Mosul a day earlier, said policeman Ammar Hussein, according to The AP. South of Mosul, a foreign truck driver, presumed Turkish, was killed by a roadside bomb attack on a convoy carrying supplies for the US military.

In Baiji, a dawn mortar attack on an Iraqi army barracks wounded one soldier and destroyed a vehicle, said Captain Hassan Yusif, according to AFP. In Tikrit, the capital of Salahuddin province which includes Baiji, the local hospital said it received the bullet-riddled bodies of three Iraqi males killed in attacks on Friday. South of Baghdad, near the city of Hilla police found the body of a man shot in the head and back, according to a local police chief. One of the victims was lifted from the Tigris River Saturday and had his hands tied to his back and was shot in the head, said Doctor Waed al-Tikriti at the city's main hospital.

The Ukrainian company that was based near Suwayrah, 25 miles south of Baghdad, left Iraq and was expected to return home by Tuesday, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said.
Their mission's over, they can go home now. We thank them for their help.

Afghanistan/South Asia
Nuggets from the Urdu press
TV Channel attacked for showing Shimon Peres
According to Jang, a mob of 20 motorbike-riding youth shouting religious slogans attacked the office of GEO TV and vandalised it because the channel had interviewed the Israeli deputy prime minister Shimon Peres. The religious fanatics were also protesting another programme called Uljhan-Suljhan which talked about intimate problems of women. The police stood aside and watched while the vandals destroyed the offices. According to Insaf, the student wing of Jamaat Islami in Lahore gathered in front of GEO TV offices and condemned the programme Uljhan-Suljhan. Daily Khabrain reported that one Tahafuz-e-Nazriya-e-Pakistan Committee announced that the attack it carried out was not against the interview but against Uljhan-Suljhan which discussed something that was against Islam. The paper said it was a gumnam (unknown) organisation.

Allah will give!
Writing in Jang Nazeer Naji said that Muslims did not work hard to enrich themselves in this life because their real life began after death. To pay attention to national projects of uplift was a far cry, Muslims did not even think of providing for their children because Allah is already supposed to provide for them.

What did Ijaz Rahim say?
Writing in Jang Jamiluddin Aali stated that at the Muqtadara of Urdu cabinet secretary Ijaz Rahim said shocking but right things about the enforcement of Urdu as state medium which was reminiscent of the Quaid, Sir Syed and Maulavi Abdul Haq. Aali's own position was that the governments did not have the political will to enforce Urdu and he also thought that internal and external forces would not allow Urdu to be enforced.

Manto's controversial epitaph
As quoted in Khabrain magazine a daughter of Saadat Hassan Manto stated that her father had written an epitaph for his own grave which was very 'sharp'. Because of fear of reaction it was not put on his grave. Instead a line of Ghalib loh-e-jahan peh harf-e-mukarrar nahin hun main (I am not a repeated word on the tablet of the world) was engraved by his family.

What do you call 'wheat' in Urdu?
Daily Insaf reported that during his public address at Okara President Musharraf forgot the Urdu word for wheat and asked how did one say wheat in Urdu. Defence minister Rao Sikandar said it was gandum. Former PML leader Manzur Wattoo was present on the stage but no one took notice of him.

Who raped Baloch women?
Reported by Khabrain, Sardar Akbar Bugti's cousin Ahmadan Bugti said that Akbar Bugti was disturbed by the rape of a doctor at Sui but his sons had been raping Baloch women. He said Sui belonged to the Bugti tribe but Akbar was in illegal occupation. He had private jails where he tortured his rivals. Kalpar Sardar Jalal Bugti said Sui belonged to his tribe and Sardar Munnoo Bugti said he was happy that the army was taking action in Sui.

New notes and pickpockets
Daily Nawa-e-Waqt reported that great Lahore lawyer MD Tahir had approached the Lahore High Court with the request that the State Bank be restrained from issuing Rs 5000 banknotes as that will facilitate the pickpockets. He also objected to the removal of five rupee paper notes because that will prevent people from making garlands of low value notes on weddings. He objected to one, two and five rupee coins.

Let's go to war!
Quoted in Khabrain ex-ISI chief Hameed Gul stated that Pakistan should give up the path of talking to India and embark again on the path of war with India. Former foreign minister Agha Shahi said that since India had not retreated from its position Pakistan too should not budge. Hameed Gul said if Kashmir was not liberated Pakistan too would not last.

Allama Rashid Ghazi escapes attempt at life
Reported by Khabrain, popular religious leader Allama Ghazi Rashid of Islamabad narrowly escaped death when a car full of terrorists fired at him. He fired back as he was ready with his own weapons. He complained that his kalashnikov had been taken away by the police. A day earlier a religious leader of Sipah Sahaba was killed in Karachi and before that a Shia scholar Ziauddin Rizvi was killed in Gilgit. According to daily Din, the killers of Shia scholar Agha Ziauddin in Gilgit had computers and 'sensitive' instruments in their possession.

Kuwait disallows visa to Pakistanis
According to Khabrain Kuwait had discontinued allowing visas to Pakistanis after many Pakistanis carrying heroin capsules were caught after landing in Kuwait in quick succession. The heroin trail was so thick and continuous that the Kuwaiti government panicked and cancelled all visas. The paper reported that after the ban, India, the Philippines and Bangladesh benefited because they didn't export heroin.

Wrong example of Kamil Agha
Daily Nawa-e-Waqt reported that PML senator Kamil Ali Agha speaking in the Senate took note of the Baloch protest about the rape of a Sindhi lady doctor at Sui and said that the Baloch did not speak out when a Baloch boy raped a Punjabi girl in Lahore some time back. Upon this the Senate opposition raised hue and cry. Another Baloch senator reminded him of the inconsistency of the example by saying that Punjabis too should have protested just as the Baloch were protesting at Sui.

Oust Nawab Akbar Bugti from Sui!
Quoted in daily Insaf, Sardar Khan Muhammad Kalpar Bugti said in Multan that Sardar Akbar Bugti had ousted his Kalpar tribe from Sui and taken over their land where he did not own a marla. He said Sardar Akbar drove the Kalpars from their homes when Nawaz Sharif was in power and unleashed tyranny in the land. He said the man blackmailed the government and took a lot of money. He appealed to the government to resettle his tribe back in Sui and they would restore peace there.

Surprised by India
Writing in Nawa-e-Waqt Sheikh Muhammad Arshad stated that he was surprised to find during a visit to India that education there was free up to BA and that even in private institutions the fees were subsidised by the state up to 75 percent. He was also surprised by the fact that only matriculates could get a driving licence there.

Who killed Maulana Haroonul Qasimi
Daily Khabrain reported that the murder of Maulana Haroonul Qasimi in Karachi was cracked by the police and some people were arrested. Maulana Qasimi was an important leader of Millet Islamiya (banned Sipah Sahaba). The terrorists who murdered him also killed four members of Tabilighi Jamaat which was not banned. The paper did not mention the name of the banned outfit to which the murderers belonged. The name of the banned Shia party was now Tahreek-e-Islami which is now part of the MMA.

Zakat swallowed by chairmen
According to Jang, crores of rupees were embezzled by the Zakat Committees all over the country during 2004. In all 25 chairman of Zakat and Ushr committees were brought to the book for wrongful payments. About Rs 20 crore in all were missing but should have gone to the poor and the deprived.

Suicide-bombing is 'ibadat'
Daily Khabrain quoted Majeed Nizami speaking at an MMA seminar explaining that far from being prohibited in Islam, suicide-bombing was a form of ibadat (worship) and was recommended for all Muslims. He said the Kashmir problem would be resolved through war and not through dialogues. Jamaat Islami's Munawwar Hassan said that retreat from the Kashmir cause by Pakistan had caused despair in Held Kashmir.

GSPC issues fatwa calling for the killing of foreigners
The Algerian terrorist group, The Salafi Group for Call and Combat (GSPC), issued a fatwa justifying the killing of "the Jews and the Christians and all other nonbelievers" in Algeria. The fatwa, entitled "Fighting the Foreigners" and signed by Abu Ibrahim Mustafa, the Emir (prince) of the Salafi Group, is being circulated on jihadist websites. Abu Ibrahim Mustafa took over leadership of the Salafi Group in October 2003 and immediately pledged loyalty to bin Laden and al-Qaeda. According to the fatwa, "the Salafi Group states in these hard circumstances for the Muslim nation in general, and especially the mujahideen, to declare war on every foreigner nonbeliever - in the Algerian lands."

"The governments in the Muslim lands", according to the fatwa "are no more than flags put by the Crusaders before leaving to keep a watchful eye on the Muslims so they don't have a government which brings back the glory of Islam." The fatwa further condemns the Algerian government as a "converted government" and accuses other regimes: "the governments in the Muslim lands are no more than flags put by the Crusaders before leaving to keep a watchful eye on the Muslims so they don't have a government which brings back the glory of Islam." Abu Mustafa calls on all Muslim Algerians to fight foreigners and disregard the local government: "Everyone, which concerns the individuals and establishments, is doing the duty for the victory of Islam and Muslims, is pushing away the attacks of Jews and Christians and other non-believers as they declare that they are not bound by any agreement with the converted Algerian government."

#1  I think cooler heads will prevail, because if this The Salafi Group for Call and Combat starts to act on thier sexual impulses and kill innocents, we have an elite Special Forces Unit that can be delivered right to thier encampment.

The place would be declared so unclean by the Imams, it would take a long time to clean-up and make pure

#2  So if the "crusaders" are "still" in charge, it must have been with the assistance of some of the locals. If only everybody could vote, you know, like in Iraq? Oh, yeah, but that's just a sham, so the only solution is the Iranian method?

Iraq-Jordan
Female Zarqawi lieutenant busted
US troops have detained a female Al Qaeda member headed by Iraq's most wanted man, Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, US military officials said on Friday. She is "someone who was picked up" within the last 30 days "and is part of the Zarqawi network. She is at Camp Cropper," Major General William Brandenburg, the head of US military detention operations in Iraq, said, adding that she was one of three females in custody. She is the only known female arrested who worked for Zarqawi's Organisation of Al Qaeda of Jihad in the Land of Two Rivers.

The other two female detainees are Rihab Rashid Taha, a scientist who became known as "Dr Germ" for helping Saddam Hussein make weapons out of anthrax, and Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash, a biology researcher known as "Mrs Anthrax". The general said that if Zarqawi, who has a $25 million bounty on his head, was captured he would be in the US custody. "He would be ours, the coalition. We would detain him and the central court of Iraq would be the one that would prosecute him," Brandenburg said.

On the other hand, Zarqawi's group vowed to defeat "infidels and apostates" in a statement published on the Internet Friday in response to a Madrid conference on terrorism. "We tell the infidels and apostates, the enemies of God: whatever you do, you will be defeated. God promised us victory," read the statement from the Organisation of Al Qaeda of Jihad in the Land of Two Rivers, the authenticity of which could not be verified. The Madrid conference, grouping former presidents and heads of state of democratic countries, on Friday presented the "Madrid Agenda", a series of recommendations aimed at combating terrorism.

Israel-Palestine
'Up to Israel to End Violence'
In a massive show of strength, thousands of Hamas and Islamic Jihad activists rallied in the Gaza Strip yesterday, sending a message to Israel that only it could bring a halt to anti-Israeli attacks. The head of Hamas in Gaza City, Mahmoud Al-Zahar, told reporters the "cooling down period" currently being respected by Hamas and other Palestinian factions could only "continue indefinitely if Israel offers concessions".

"No one is optimistic about continuing this cooling down period indefinitely. Israel must offer something in return otherwise the resistance will continue," Zahar said. More than 7,000 Hamas supporters took part in the rally marking the first anniversary of Israel's assassination of Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. The gathering was held in an empty lot near Yassin's home. Zahar said Hamas would decide in "the coming days" whether it would sign on to a cease-fire due to be discussed at inter-Palestinian talks on March 15 in Cairo. "It will depend on what our Egyptian brothers get from Israel" in exchange for a truce, he said.

Earlier, some 1,500 armed members of Islamic Jihad took part in a demonstration in the streets of Gaza City. Their faces covered by black balaclavas, the demonstrators raised their Kalashnikov rifles in the air as they marched after Friday prayers, burning Israeli and US flags and effigies of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and US President George W. Bush. The activists also brandished a large banner made up of the Palestinian, Lebanese and Syrian flags. "This march is a message saying yes to the intifada and yes to the resistance," said a political leader of Islamic Jihad, Mohammed Al-Hindi. Hindi said he expected the talks in Cairo to be "successful", but stressed that a cease-fire with Israel would not come "for free".

#1  t alternative to signing on is your death Mahmoud. It's pretty plain Israel has nothing else it can or will offer other than leaving the Gaza Strip. You can STFU and submit to the PA and knock your crap off or die. Gatherings like this of people who have sworn to never stop attacking Israel until it's destroyed and every last Jew is dead do not build confidence. The only people who are hopeful that Hamas and IJ will lay down their arms and submit to the authority are are foolish EUropeans.

Follow the money. The trail ends in Iran.

#2  The idea of peace, road maps, and whatever isn't going to work. Finish the wall, complete the pullout, then use overwhelming force to deal with incursions and attacks. This negotiation nonsense has gone on long enough.

#3  if Israel offers concessions

Guess the Paleos still don't have that responsibility concept down yet. They will, only when they get thumped, and thumped hard.

#4  cause/effect not a principle in the Paleo univers. Fuck them. When they decide to join the civilized world I'll start mourning their lost opportunities. Until then, pass the popcorn

#5  The thought occurs that Jordan cannot be thrilled with the idea of a Palestinian state on the West Bank. Rather than giving these armed disturbed children a state, the Israelis should say, "Egypt, the Gaza Strip is yours. Fix it. Jordan, you get the West Bank, control it. Further attacks from either place will be considered acts of war by Egypt and Jordan."

Wrist video display for overhead UAV real-time video feeds...Last Summer, the Israeli company Tadiran Spectalink revealed one of the more successful information tools used in recent Israeli counter-terrorist operations. The system, called V-Rambo (Video Receiver And Monitor for Battlefield Operations), is a 3x3 inch color video screen, with a wireless communications link to overhead UAVs. The battery powered system is worn on the wrist and provides the user with live video (at 30 frames a second) from the UAV overhead. The receiver, battery and antenna are carried on the soldiers web equipment or jacket. V-Rambo can also display digital maps. The Israeli manufacturer is trying to sell the system to foreign armed forces, most likely American. V-Rambo proved very useful in counter-terrorist operations, allowing small groups of soldiers to be led by officers or NCOs equipped with a real time video of the surrounding terrain. This put enemy fighters at a big disadvantage, and reduced the risk of friendly fire incidents. A vehicle version of V-Rambo uses a five inch color screen. V-Rambo can, of course, accept video feeds from any ground or air based source.

#3  Here is something also of importance now being developed
Seeing through the future

Four years later, Lumus, which is based in Rehovot, has developed a promising technology that can be used to create personal, wearable, near-to-eye virtual screens for mobile applications.

This will make it even better for the user who will be able to see the video without taking his eyes off the terrain.

The LOE – a small, flat, transparent optical plate – transforms small images into large images, with a large field of view. Images from small and miniature sources, such as LCD, LCoS or OLED devices, are projected into the plate, and a set of reflective components reconstruct and project them directly into the viewer's eye.
