Violence killed 70 Afghans in February
[Iran Press TV] Latest official data show that some 70 people, nearly half of them civilians, bit the dust and more than 80 others sustained injuries in a spate of terrorist attacks across Afghanistan in February.

According to the figures released on Sunday, as many as 20 kabooms took place in Afghanistan in the second month of the current year.

In the last attack of the month, two children were killed and 16 civilians were maimed when a boom-mobile targeted the vehicle of Afghan politician, Farhidoon Mohmmand, in the eastern Nangarhar

Province. The politician escaped the act of terror unharmed.

Additionally, about 11 roadside kabooms took place throughout Afghanistan last month.

At least 10 assassinations happened in Afghanistan in February, leaving government officials, security forces and local leaders dead.

Pro-government civilians, civil servants, religious leaders and tribal elders were also the victims of assassinations.

Fighting drives hundreds in south-western Somalia into misery
BAKOL, Somalia -- Hundreds of residents in south-western Somalia who escaped fighting between government troops backed by the African Union and the Al-Qaeda linked militants face misery, hunger and diseases in bush areas in Bakool region, Garowe Online reports.
Not that you or I would be able to distinguish this misery from the usual misery of the region...
The fighting already displaced thousands of nomads and residents in rural areas, creating a humanitarian situation in Bakool region, hard-hit by the anti militants push led by AU forces.

Abdifatah Duwane, the commissioner for Yel town told Radio Garowe that the displaced families face water shortages and basic health care, adding woes to their already fragile situation. He urged aid agencies to come to assistance for the families who fled into rural areas, leaving behind their homes and livestock of which they were heavily dependent on.

Residents in El-Bar, a small rural town in the region reported on saturday that fighting between the two sides killed at least 11 people, mostly civilians who were caught in the middle of the offensive against the insurgent fighters trying to topple the western-backed government in Somalia.

Leading Benghazi assassin reported arrested
[Libya Herald] A man is reported to have been incarcerated
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in Benghazi, charged with the liquidation in December 2013 of Colonel Kamal Bazaza, head of military intelligence in the city, and in May last year of the editor of the Benghazi newspaper Burniq, Muftah Awad Buzid.

The suspect has been named as Nuri al-Obeidi, a resident of the city's Ras Obeida district. He is also accused of the murder of 28 other people.

No details have been revealed as to when he was arrested nor how the authorities discovered his identity.

He is said to have admitted the killings of Bazaza and Buzid. The latter was rubbed out on Benghazi's Istiqlal Street while on his way to work. The former died when his car blew up, also in Istiqlal Street. Obeidi, believed to be in his 20s, is reported to have disclosed that he shadowed Bazaza for three days before attaching the bomb to his vehicle.

He is said to have claimed that the killing was ordered by Ramadan Al-Rabaie, listed by the Saiqa Brigade last July as a member of Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya and Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet...
and living in Leithi district. He said that he had been blackmailed by Rabie into carrying them out.

He has also allegedly admitted to killing in September 2012 Sheikh Akram Saleh Al-Drissi, the imam of the Argam Ben Abi Al-Argam mosque in Ras Obeida, its muezzin Moutaz Al-Sharif and 26 other religious figures and political activists.

Following the arrest, Obeidi's home was set on fire.

Benghazi protestors carry on despite a mortar attack
[Libya Herald] A crowd of several hundred demonstrators in Benghazi's Kish Square yesterday ignored a mortar attack and carried on with their protest in support of the Libyan Army and in denunciation of terrorism.

Two mortars landed in the square away from the main concentration of protestors. One or two people appeared to have minor injuries. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
instead of dispersing, the crowd continued to chant angrily. They also protested the death of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
civil rights activist Intisar Al-Hasairi.

Today IS posted a video made on a contested Benghazi street. After the usual harangue, the closing shots showed what it claimed was a Dignity soldier being bumped off. His white car, which had no registration plates, seemed to be passed by two different terrorist vehicles as he drove along a quiet street. Footage taken by a terrorist beside the gunman showed burst of fire into the white car, before the attackers drove on. Given that the bursts of fire were different, it may be that in succession, two terrorist gunnies were driven by their victim's car.
Did he get out of the car and walk away afterward, like the dead people do in Palliwood films?

Bomb blast kills at least two people in Egypt's Aswan
[Iran Press TV] A kaboom has killed at least two people in Aswan, a major tourist town in southern Egypt, police say.

The Sunday kaboom, caused by a device planted near a cop shoppe, maimed five others including a policeman, security sources said.

Egypt has undergone a series of shooting attacks and bombings since the North African country's first democratically-elected president, Mohammed Morsi, was ousted by the army in July 2013.

The violence has hit various parts of the country, especially the volatile Sinai Peninsula, where the army has been battling Lion of Islam groups, including Ansar Beit al-Maqdis.

In recent months, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis members have staged deadly attacks on Egypt's police forces and grabbed credit for a series of attacks on military facilities in the capital, Cairo, as well as the Sinai Peninsula.

Mob Kills Woman over Suicide Bombing Scare in Nigeria
[AnNahar] A mob in the northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
n city of Bauchi on Sunday beat a woman to death and burnt her body over suspicion she was a jacket wallah, police and witnesses said.

"At about 0700 hours (0600 GMT), information at our disposal revealed that a yet to be identified lady who allegedly refused to allow herself to be screened at the entrance of Muda Lawal Market Bauchi was attacked by irate mob," Bauchi state police front man Haruna Mohammed said in a statement.

He said the mob "set her ablaze," adding that she died before police could rescue her.

Mohammed said police had deployed to the scene to disperse the mob but no arrest was made.

An eyewitness, Isa Safiyanu, told Agence La Belle France-Presse that the woman, who was accompanied by a man, raised suspicion when two bottles were found strapped to both sides of her waist after she refused to be frisked with a metal detector at the entrance of the bus station.

"When her hijab was raised over her head two bottles were found strapped to her waist and the crowd descended on the young woman," he said.

"They beat her to death and placed a used tire on the body, sprinkled it with petrol and set it on fire," he said.
But left her companion entirely untouched and unarrested? #WarAgainstWomen
According to a police source in the city who asked to remain anonymous, it was unlikely the woman was carrying explosives which would have went kaboom! when her assailants attacked her.
...or cooked off when the body was burnt...
"The only plausible explanation is she could have been sent on a test mission to see if it was possible to enter the bus station without being screened," the source said.
And now they know.
The killing follows a spate of suicide kabooms in recent days blamed on Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...

Rival Yemeni Camps Entrench as Iran Flights Arrive
[ABCNEWS.GO] An Iranian airplane delivered supplies to Yemen's Shiite rebel-held capital on Sunday, while the president gained support from influential tribal and provincial leaders in signs that the rival camps seeking to rule the rapidly unravelling country are entrenching their positions.

The first direct flight from Shiite powerhouse Iran to Sanaa was carrying 12 tons of medical supplies as well as tents and and Red Islamic Thingy aid workers, Iran's deputy ambassador Rasai Ebadi told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. It came a day after rebel Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
representatives signed an agreement in Tehran to set up 14 direct weekly flights between the two countries.

The move underscored how the rebels, who are widely suspected of being backed by Iran, are strengthening their grip over state institutions and exercising sovereign power in Sanaa even as the country's president insists he is still in charge after fleeing to the south.

"The Houthis want to show they're not disconnected from the world, that they are not desperate, so they're reviving relations with Iran," said Yemen analyst Hisham al-Omeisy.

"The flights are a bit peculiar and people are surprised. Yemenis don't usually fly to Iran, for tourism or work or medical treatment, so 14 weekly flights seems like a bit too much. The point of the medical supplies was to kill the rumor that more weapons will be coming in to support the Houthis," he added.

Bahrain charges 17 bombing suspects with forming militant group
Manama -- Bahrain’s public prosecutor has charged 17 people with forming a militant group and carrying out bombings that wounded security personnel, the state news agency said on Saturday.

The group had set off bombs in the island kingdom’s Maqaba, Al Janabiya, Budaiya and Qarya villages, prosecutor Ahmed Al Hammadi was quoted as saying.

“The members had agreed to set up a terror cell to make explosives and weapons to carry out terror acts, target security forces ... and spread panic among people,” he said, according to Bahrain News Agency.

Their trial will begin on March 22 and two of the defendants outside the country will be tried in absentia, he added.

There have been a growing number of attacks using explosives, often targeting police-men.

Radicalization Fear Forces Danish Boy into Juvenile Home
[AnNahar] Danish authorities have forced a 15-year-old Moslem boy into a juvenile home in an unusual move aimed at preventing him being radicalized by his father, a report said on Sunday.

Child care authorities in the town of Aarhus feared that the boy's father might persuade him to travel to Syria to fight with Islamic bully boyz and placed him into care in September, the daily Jyllands-Posten reported.

The paper said the move came after it emerged that the boy had begun to attend the Grimhoej mosque, notorious for refusing to denounce the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group.

"You cannot force a lone child into care due to a suspicion of radicalization," the father's lawyer Tage Goettsche told another daily, Berlingske.

Researchers told local media the move was heavy-handed and that a juvenile home might radicalize the boy further through interaction with young criminals.

"You'd typically try to find a foster home," social scientist Hanne Hartoft at Aalborg University told news agency Ritzau.

By late last year Aarhus -- a city of only 324,000 residents -- sent as many as 30 people to fight in Syria.

Some 110 Danish Moslems, out of a total population of 5.6 million, have joined the fight in Syria, according to intelligence estimates.

Measured per capita, Denmark is the second largest European source after Belgium of jihadist fighters going to the Middle East.

The country was shaken by twin shootings in the capital Copenhagen last month, when a gunman killed two people in separate attacks targeting a cultural center and a synagogue.

The gunman -- a 22-year-old Dane of Paleostinian origin -- had been released from prison two weeks before the attacks after serving a term for aggravated assault, raising fears he may have become radicalized behind bars.

Security men among 10 held for jailbreak
[DAWN] GILGIT: Initial investigations into the jailbreak in Gilgit have revealed that the inmates had carried out the daring act with help from the prison's security staff.
No! Re-e-e-e-e-ally?
Danyor Station House Officer Ghulaam Muhammad and one of the runaway prisoners were maimed after police encircled them in Minwar town, 13km from the jail, but the runaways still managed to escape.
Imagine that.
Gilgit-Baltistan police chief Zaffar Iqbal Awan told Dawn that police and other security forces had launched a search operation on Friday evening after receiving an intelligence tip and a clash took place in a hilly area near Minwar.
"Cop shoppe!"
"Lissen, dis is Mahmoud da Weasel! Da guyz yer lookin' for is hid out in da hilly area near Minwar!"

He said police had sealed off roads near a river, but the besieged prisoners jumped into a ditch and escaped.
"Chaudry, you got the ditch covered?"
"Don't have to, chief! They'd never jump in there [SPLASH!]"

He said the SHO and one of the runaways were maimed in the encounter.
"Ow! My arm!"
"Ow! My leg!"

The official said police had found some drugs, dates and other items left by the fleeing prisoners.
"Dates, Legume?"
"Dates, Inspector!"
"Hmmm... You realize what that means?"
"What?"
"Look for a dark-haired woman between five feet five and five feet six with brown hair, wearing a plaid dress who speaks with a lisp, in Padi, Thalichi or Diamer district!"

He said the search operation had been extended to Padi, Thalichi and areas bordering Diamer district.
It was the dates that gave 'em away.
Mr Awan said police were checking medical stores and private hospitals in the area to trace the injured prisoner.
"Yeah, doc! He'd be with a woman in a plaid dress. And, oh yeah! There's a hole in him!"
He conceded that the jailbreak attempt by four prisoners had been assisted by some members of the security staff within the prison, but said an investigation was under way.
"We shall root out the miscreants, you betcha!"
He said seven jail staff personnel and three religious leaders had been enjugged.
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
Gilgit cantonment police started the paperwork but haven't done much else against Tanzeem Alfaroqia
Never heard of them before this incident. Neither has Google.
leaders Mir Baz, Jamshid and Inaam and Gilgit Jail wardens Akbar Zaman and Musa Alam, head constable Saifuddin, dispenser Aziz, constable Mohammad Afzal and Frontier Constabulary's constable Arif and obtained their physical remand for seven days from an anti-terrorism court.
Heh heh! They'll never suspect it was me!
"Stick 'em up, constable!"

A joint investigation team is dealing with the case under the supervision of Home Secretary Sibtain Ahmed.
"Defer! Defer! To the Lord High Supervisor!"
POLICE INVESTIGATION: According to initial police investigation, 102 prisoners, including 25 sentenced to death by ATCs, were in the prison at the time of the jailbreak.
"How many we got left, Chaudry?"
"Hmmm... I'd have to do a headcount to give you an exact number, chief!"
"About how many, then?"
"None."

They included four men involved in the killings near Nanga Parbat of foreign tourists and their guide and two in the liquidation of SSP Hilal Khan and two army officers in Diamer.

Hazrat Bilal, Dilbar Khan, Liaqat and Habibul Rahman of Diamer were kept in barrack-6. The investigation showed that the four prisoners made a plan to flee on Thursday evening with the help of some members of the security staff.

Their barrack was locked but it had been opened on Friday morning to let them flee. Under the jail rules, the gate may be opened for high-profile prisoners only after permission from the jail superintendent and they may be taken out in case of an emergency with handcuffs, amid tight security.

The investigation also revealed that pistols had been provided to the prisoners from within the jail. The prisoners went to the jail mosque and entered the dispensary after breaking a window. From the dispensary they went to the western side of the jail near the boundary wall. The prisoners scaled the 14-foot wall and jumped onto the Riverview Road at about 2.30am without facing resistance.

When they came to the road, coppers on patrol tried to intercept them, but they opened fire. Police killed Bilal and injured Dilbar in the clash, while Liaqat and Habib fled. The body and the injured prisoner were taken to the Kashorat hospital.

Initial reports said the jail security had been enhanced after a decision to transfer major cases of terrorism to military courts and personnel of Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts, Frontier Constabulary and police were on duty at the time.

Interestingly, Chief Secretary Sikandar Sultan Raja suspended Prisons Inspector General Muhammad Faisal who had himself taken the same action earlier against a deputy superintendent, an assistant superintendent, a head warden and two wardens after the incident.

They said the men were arrested from Ghouri Town in connection with the attack on the Qasar-e-Sakina Imambargah

#4  Mewonders if ISIS is all hat and no ranch.

It appears that IS is divided into two separate 'franchises': one in Syria, one in Iraq. There is a pronounced difference between the two. The hardcore, veteran elements of IS are in the former, while the latter uses either local help or those (for various reasons) deemed not ready for the big-leagues.

I surmise that the IS Iraqi area of ops is considered by their leadership as more of a buffer zone or holding action. There are several possibilities:

1. It may be that IS views taking western Syria and parts of Lebanon as a priority, including wiping out "moderate" rebel groups.

2. It could also be that the IS wishes to conserve and consolidate (perhaps dwindling) combat assets for those operations, and/or in order to hold the territory they already have.

3. It's possible that IS now has more 'bodies' than weapons and experience. Hence what we saw at Kobane and what we may be seeing within Iraq. Throw cannon fodder into the theater to tie down opposition forces within Iraq and then draw off the most capable/reliable for use elsewhere.

Iraq Launches Offensive on ISIS North of Baghdad
[NBCNEWS] Iraq's army and Shi'ite militia have launched a long-awaited offensive against ISIS in Salahuddin province, a stronghold of the radical Islamist fighters north of Baghdad, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Sunday.

The ultra-radical fighters control several strongholds in the mainly Sunni Moslem province of Salahuddin, including Tikrit, hometown of executed former president Saddam Hussein. They also hold other towns on the Tigris river north of the government-held city of Samarra, which Abadi visited on Sunday.

"The prime minister and armed forces chief ... announce the start of the security campaign to liberate Salahuddin," a statement issued by Abadi's office said as he met military leaders in the province, where thousands of troops and militia have gathered for battle.

In comments broadcast on Iraqi television, Abadi said the Islamist Lions of Islam would be pushed out of all of Salahuddin and offered their supporters a final opportunity to hand themselves in. "I call upon all those who have been deluded and made mistakes in past to lay down arms today," he said. "This is their last chance. If they insist on staying on their wrong path they will receive the fair punishment they deserve because they ... stood with terrorism."

26 deaths so far in five-day Mindanao assault
[Business World] A military assault on Islamist militants in the southern Philippines entered its fifth day on Saturday, with the toll rising to 24 guerrillas and two soldiers dead.

Ten Abu Sayyaf rebels were killed in a two-hour battle on Friday after the army struck their jungle lair on Jolo island with artillery and helicopter gunships. Another 14 rebels and two troops had been killed since the fighting erupted on Tuesday, said Col. Alan Arrojado, who is leading the assault.

Battles have been raging in the mountainous and thickly forested villages of Patikul town. The militants were reportedly moving with three Malaysian Jemaah Islamiyah members who were providing them with bomb-making training.

Military spokesman Col. Restituto Padilla said, "This (assault) will not stop until we put an end to the Abu Sayyaf."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Obama Regime Backed Rebels in Syria Defeated By Al Qaeda
BEIRUT -- The first Syrian rebel group to be given U.S. weapons collapsed Sunday after losing control of its headquarters to Syria's main al-Qaeda affiliate, further complicating American-led efforts to counter the rise of extremism in Syria.

The rout of Harakat Hazm, whose name means Steadfastness Movement, culminated months of clashes with the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat al-Nusra in which the moderate group first was pushed from its main headquarters in the northern Syrian province of Idlib and then was ousted Sunday from its new base in the province of Aleppo.

After losing this latest battle, Hazm said in a statement circulated on social media that the movement had been dissolved "in an effort to halt the bloodshed" and that surviving members would be absorbed into a new rebel coalition called the Shamiyah Front.

Nusra fighters boasted on Twitter that they had seized control of U.S.-made TOW anti-tank missiles and other American aid provided to Hazm when they overran the rebels' headquarters in the town of Atarib in the province of Aleppo. The claims could not be verified, and American supplies of weaponry to moderate rebels in northern Syria had in any case been scaled back in recent months since the battles with Nusra began.

The collapse comes as the Pentagon embarks on a new effort to train moderate rebels to fight the Islamic State, a different extremist group that is at odds with Jabhat al-Nusra and has severed ties with al-Qaeda.

Hazm, which once claimed to have 5,000 fighters, had received U.S. weapons under a separate covert program launched last year by the CIA that was intended to bolster moderate rebels and put pressure on President Bashar al-Assad to compromise with the opposition.

Since Islamic State fighters surged into the Iraqi city of Mosul last summer, the Obama administration has refocused its Syria policy in ways that emphasize defeating the Islamic State rather than pressuring Assad to step down.

IS Frees 19 Syrian Christians as Ransom Paid
[AnNahar] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group jihadists on Sunday freed 19 of the 220 Assyrian Christians they took hostage in Syria last week, after a ransom was paid for their release, activists said.

"Nineteen Assyrian hostages arrived on Sunday at the Church of Our Lady in Hasakeh after they were released by IS," said Osama Edward, the director of the Assyrian Network for Human Rights.

"They arrived on two buses from Shaddadeh," the IS stronghold in the northeastern province of Hasakeh where they were tossed into the calaboose, he told Agence La Belle France-Presse.

Edward said an IS religious court decided on Saturday to release the Christians in exchange for a sum of money for each family that IS considers as jizya, or tax, paid by non-Moslems.

He was unable to say how much was paid but recalled that in November IS released Assyrians after receiving payments of $1,700 per person.

The activist said negotiations for the release of all hostages began on Saturday between Assyrian officials and Arab Moslem tribal chiefs.

Last week, IS kidnapped 220 Assyrians in the Tal Tamr area where the bully boy Islamist group has seized control of 10 Christian villages, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Almost 5,000 people have since fled to Kurdish- and government-controlled areas.

Before Syria's civil war erupted in 2011, there were 30,000 Assyrians in the country, among an estimated Christian population of about 1.2 million.

The Assyrians, from one of the world's oldest Christian communities, have faced an increasing threat since IS captured large parts of Syria.

U.N. peace envoy Staffan de Mistura paid a surprise visit on Sunday to a church near the Syrian capital in a show of solidarity with the war-torn country's Christian minority targeted by jihadists.

Army Bombs Gunmen in Qaa Outskirts, Destroys Defenses near Wadi al-Hosn
[AnNahar] The army opened artillery fire Sunday evening after detecting movements by bad boy groups in the outskirts of the Bekaa border towns of Arsal and al-Qaa.

"The Lebanese army fired artillery at movements by the gangs in the Wadi Rafeq area in al-Qaa's outskirts," LBCI television reported.

The army meanwhile issued a communique announcing that one of its units "raided sawmills and stone quarries facing the Wadi al-Hosn area in Arsal's outskirts, destroying fortifications that had been set up by the armed terrorist groups."

Troops found "quantities of hashish, syringes, military equipment and a sum of money," the army added.

Earlier on Sunday, the army thwarted an attempt by gunnies to infiltrate the outskirts of Arsal, reported the National News Agency.

It said that the army engaged in festivities with the terrorists.

A number of the gunnies were killed and others maimed in the fighting that erupted at dawn.

The mountainous area along the Lebanese-Syrian border has long been a smuggling haven, with multiple routes into Syria that have been used to transport weapons and fighters.

The army has been targeting gunnies along the country's eastern border to prevent them from advancing.

The jihadists remain entrenched on the outskirts of Arsal on the porous Syrian-Lebanese border.
