Idaho city's ordinance tells pastors to marry gays or go to jail
[WASHINGTONTIMES] Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, city officials have laid down the law to Christian pastors within their community, telling them bluntly via an ordinance that if they refuse to marry homosexuals, they will face jail time and fines.

The dictate comes on the heels of a legal battle with Donald and Evelyn Knapp, ordained ministers who own the Hitching Post wedding chapel in the city, but who oppose gay marriage, The Daily Caller reported.

A federal judge recently ruled that the state's ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional, while the city of Coeur d'Alene has an ordinance that prevents discrimination based on sexual preference.

The Supreme Court's recent refusal to take on gay rights' appeals from five states has opened the doors for same-sex marriages to go forth.

The Knapps were just asked by a gay couple to perform their wedding ceremony, The Daily Caller reported.

"On Friday, a same-sex couple asked to be married by the Knapps, and the Knapps politely declined," The Daily Signal reported. "The Knapps now face a 180-day jail term and a $1,000 fine for each day they decline to celebrate the same-sex wedding."

The Alliance Defending Freedom has filed a suit in federal court to stop the city from enforcing the fine and jail sentence, saying in a statement from senior legal counsel Jeremy Tedesco that the government has overstepped its bounds, The Daily Caller reported.

"Many have denied that pastors would ever be forced to perform ceremonies that are completely at odds with their faith, but that's what is happening here -- and it's happened this quickly," Mr. Tedersco said, The Daily Caller reported.

But the city sees it differently. As far back as May, city officials were insisting that their ordinance is indeed in line with law.

"If you turn away a gay couple, refuse to provide services for them, then in theory you violated our code, and you're looking at a potential misdemeanor citation," said Coeur d'Alene City Attorney Warren Wilson, to KXLY months ago.

#2  Genesis 19:5 comes to mind:

and they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them."

Anyone think can't happen here? It's getting closer and closer to that point. At first we had to 'tolerate' it, then we had to accept it, and now these pastors have to, by law, condone it. How long before someone is forced to actively participate?

#12  Glenmore, thats a dangerous precedent you're endorsing.

The rights freedom of association, of free practice of religion are easily abridge because of a link to commerce? Those are fundamental rights, and abridging them must meet a very high standard.

Sorry - in THIS nation, we have always carved out exemptions for the free practice of religion.

See the problem is that for them, gay "marriage" is a sham. Its a lie, it is illegitimate and cannot exist per orthodox Christian doctrine. Ethically, they can no more perform a gay marriage than they can a Satanic one - they simply are antithetical to their core religion.

Also, you would willingly have the government enforce a law that forces them to act against their fundamental faith - their own moral basis - or else be forbidden to perform a ritual (marriage) and a service to coreligionists and get remunerated from it if they don't provide it to everyone?

So in your view, these gays can also start suing the local Catholic parish priest because he refuses to perform the ceremony as well? It is a paid service - and under your massive expansion of government power, it gets the "commerical" treatment, and allows you to apply your threat of force to these priests who do not submit to your moral views as implemented by the government.

And make no mistake - it is force we are talking about. They government will send armed agents, physically take you from your property, and will kill you if you effectively resist. Ask the Weavers. IS that really where you want to be Glenmore, on the side of the jackboots?

For along those paths lie the worst sorts of oppressions.

What's next Glemore, forcing Doctors and Nurses to participate in abortions? After all, that is a "right" that has been endorsed by other large government people who hold the same view as you, and it is also a business, because they charge for it, and opposition is on moral grounds. So a MD or RN who refuses is not allowed to work?

See where that thinking takes you? Hint: jackboots.

My personal take? If you dont like it go someplace else. The gay couple are assholes. These people perform CHRISTIAN Weddings, and the gays were not looking for that. They are in no way damaged or prevented from exercising their own lifestyle by the refusal of a religious service, a religion to which they are not a party. And the government here is being massively fascistic and oppressive. Its the kind of government that will foment armed rebellion that ends with the autocrats hanging from telephone poles (deservedly, IMHO).

Keep pushing, city officials. I'm sure Coeur d'Alene has plenty of telephone poles.

That's the argument being used against Hobby Lobby, et all, as they fight the Obamacare abortion/abortifacient requirement up to the Supreme Court, OldSpook. Also how a number of states drove the Catholic Church out of the adoption business, and may soon drive her out of the hospital business as well, to the detriment of society.

Mary Landrieu: My Multimillion-Dollar Home Is Not a Mansion
More like a small palace, I imagine...
[NATIONALREVIEW] Democratic senator Mary Landrieu insists that her multimillion-dollar home in Washington, D.C., isn't a mansion.

At a campaign event in Bogalusa, La., this weekendâ, Landrieu called a woman up on stage to explain that the 7,300 square-foot house doesn't qualify as a mansion, and then interrupted the woman to add that she lives next to the cleaners and her home is only 36 feet wide. "They say I live in a mansion," Landrieu said. "It's a townhome, which I also have a home in New Orleans."
The New Orleans townhouse is her parents', she just rents a bedroom there...
Landrieu reportedly lives in a 7,316 square-foot house in D.C. that boasts five bathrooms, four water heaters, and 82 fire sprinkler heads. She claimed this $2.5 million residence as her address on her statement of candidacy, but listed her parents' townhouse address in New Orleans when she was qualifying for the ballot. At the beginning of the video, Landrieu appears to be complaining about the lack of scrutiny regarding her Republican opponent Bill Cassidy's home, pointing out that he lives on a lake. The label "Senator representing the District of Columbia" really seems to be getting to Landrieu.

#5  Wait a minute. If the house is only 36 feet wide but it has 7,316 square feet then how long is it? Oh, that's right, I have a calculator on my computer. Let's see, 7316 divided by 36 equals 203.2222222222222222222222. So for perspective, that's 67.66666666666667 yards. Not quite as long as a football field but pretty long for a house. Did I miss something?

Give the thing three stories (public rooms on the ground floor, private rooms upstairs, staff work rooms (kitchen, etc) in the basement), then recalculate.
Posted by: trailing wife || 10/22/2014 12:22 Comments || Top||

#9  There are some cities that taxed houses based on the frontage - the width of the house. The solution was to build narrow but deep houses.

Ms Landrieu's house may be like that.

Obama the virtuoso manager
by Caroline Glick

h/t Gates of Vienna
Since he assumed office nearly six years ago, US President Barack Obama has been dogged by allegations of managerial incompetence. Obama, his critics allege, had no managerial experience before he was elected. His lack of such experience, they claim, is reflected in what they see as his incompetent handling of the challenges of the presidency.

In everything from dealing with the Congress, to reining in radical ideologues at the IRS, to handling the chaos at the Mexican border, to putting together coordinated strategies for dealing with everything from Ebola to Islamic State (IS), Obama’s critics claim that he is out of his league. That he is incompetent.

But if Israel’s experience with him is any guide, then his critics are the ones who are out to sea. Because at least in his handling of US relations with the Jewish state, Obama has exhibited a mastery of the tools of the executive branch unmatched by most of his predecessors.

Consider two stories reported in last Friday’s papers.
