Homeless man beaten in April outside Phila. gas station dies
[Philly.com] The last time Diane Barnes visited her brother Robert, who was living on the streets in Olney, was in January. She brought him new boots for the cold weather. She also tried to give him new gloves.

"He insisted that I give [the gloves] to his friend," who also was homeless, his sister recalled Thursday night.

The next time she saw her brother, it was in a surveillance video released to the media showing him being viciously attacked outside a Sunoco in Olney on April 7. She recognized her brother from the new boots. On Wednesday, Robert Barnes, 51, died at Abington Memorial Hospital.

The video, which was widely aired, shows a vehicle pulling up to the Sunoco at 5338 N. Fifth St., and three women and several juveniles rushing out toward Barnes. In all, he was ambushed by six individuals who used Mace, a hammer, and the leg of a rocking chair as weapons. Barnes suffered multiple skull fractures and broken bones, police said. The attack left Barnes in a coma.

His sister said he eventually opened his eyes, but was unresponsive and remained in a vegetative state.

Burglar stuck in chimney dies after homeowner lights fire
[Fox] A burglar stuck in a chimney died Saturday after the homeowner lit a fire in the fireplace, California authorities said.

The burglar climbed in the chimney Friday night to rob the home in the small city of Huron but became stuck, Fox 40 reports. The man was discovered just before 3 p.m. Saturday when the homeowner came home and lit the fireplace.

The homeowner heard the burglar scream from inside the chimney and worked to put the fire out, causing the house to fill up with smoke, the station reported.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office said firefighters responded to the home and dismantled the chimney to rescue the burglar. But when they pulled him out, he was dead.

The coroner's offices removed the body from the scene and will conduct an autopsy to determine his identity and the exact cause of death, a sheriff's deputy said.

#1  causing the house to fill up with smoke,

This reminds me of what my older brother Dave did back in the late 1970's. I don't remember exactly why, but he hated the neighbors two houses down, so during a snowstorm, he climbs onto their roof with a 2' x 2' piece of plywood and a couple of bricks after they started a fire in their fireplace. Over the chimney this stuff went, and over to the neighbors' house went the firetrucks fifteen minutes later.

Expedition To Study Global Warming Put On Hold Because Of TOO MUCH ICE
[The Daily Caller] An expedition to study the effects of global warming was put on hold Wednesday. The reason? Too much ice.

The CCGS Amundsen, a Medium Arctic icebreaker and Arctic research vessel operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, was to travel throughout Hudson Bay, a body of water in northeastern Canada, but was rerouted to help ships who were stuck in the icy water.

A Coast Guard officer said the conditions were the "worst he's seen in 20 years," reports CBC news.

"Obviously it has a large impact on us," says Martin Fortier, executive director of ArcticNet, which coordinates research on the vessel. "It's a frustrating situation."

ArcticNet is a network of scientists who study "the impacts of climate change and modernization in the coastal Canadian Arctic."

The vessel is one of only two icebreakers in the Arctic, leaving the ship obligated to reroute their travel plans to help break ice for resupply ships.

Johnny Leclair, an assistant commissioner for the Coast Guard, said there should be two more icebreakers headed to the Arctic in the next week, which would free up their ship to continue on their originally planned trip.

Fortier is hopeful the season will still be productive.

Of course it will. Global warming is getting worse! Sorry. Climate Change is getting worse. In less than ten years, it'll be different.

#4  Bookmark for future reference.

Correlation is not causation, but many, if not all, of man’s worst times since the last glacial maximum occur during colder and dryer periods. Often these times were made worse by warfare as in the Greek Dark Ages, the sacking of Rome, the collapse of the Akkadian Empire, etc. The colder and more arid climate could have been part of the cause of the wars. We go to war when we are starving and thirsty. More importantly, I was unable to find evidence of a crisis* that was due to warming.

* not to be confused with modern media created and hyped pseudo-crisis

#5  the issue is more complex

for example, the medieval warm period resulted in population increase and when harvests were bad with some fierce winters beginning in 1310 or so, the population was weakened and were easier targets for the bubonic plague which hit europe beginning in about 1315

However, one organization was there to see us off, the Jewish American War Veterans. They gave each one of us a little package containing toiletries, candy bars another items I can no longer remember. I will never forget that. I will never forget them.

Florida '€˜Muslim-free' gun shop owner wins discrimination suit
[Wash Times] A federal discrimination lawsuit filed by a Muslim activist group against a Florida gun retailer owner who declared his shop a "Muslim-Free Zone" has been dismissed.

U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom ruled that Florida Gun Supply owner Andy Hallinan's sign was protected by the First Amendment, and the activists couldn't prove they were injured by the action, a local NBC affiliate reported.

Bangladesh
Showdown in Tejgaon
[Dhaka Tribune] Fierce violence broke out in the capital's Tejgaon yesterday as police and transport workers clashed for around an hour over an eviction drive in the area.

At least seven people, including journalists and city corporation employees, were maimed during the violence, while several vehicles in the area were also vandalised.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq, who was present with the eviction team, had to take shelter inside a workers' union office during the violence.

Law enforcers and locals said the transport workers -- although agitated -- were initially cooperative when the DNCC authorities started the drive at Tejgaon truck stand in the morning.

But tensions crossed the tipping point after a bulldozer shoved a covered van, which the workers said had been standing there for some time.

Police asked transport workers to remove the covered van, but no one cared. Then the bulldozer hit the covered van. Angered at the incident, workers started throwing bricks at the police, who reportedly retaliated with rubber bullets.

Demonstrating workers said two of the protesters, transport manager Bodruddoza, 55, and truck driver Jasim Uddin, 40, were hit by bullets shot by the police. Another garment worker named Masum Billah was also hit by a bullet.

Santu Chandro Das, assistant sub-inspector at Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said Bodruddoza was admitted with gunshot wounds to his both legs, Jasim was hit on his right ear and arm, and Masum had wounds on his arm and back.

All of the injured men were released after primary treatment, the ASI added.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
claims of police shooting were denied by Tejgaon zone Deputy Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar. He termed the situation an isolated incident and said: "The police did not open fire on transport workers. Some people are distracting them by speaking about police shooting." The police also did not arrest anyone in connection with the clash, he added.

During the violence, protesters allegedly assaulted The Daily Star photographer Anisur Rahman, bdnews24.com photographer Tanvir Ahmed and two city corporation employees.

Media vehicles belonging to Channel i, Independent Television, Ekushey Television, two pick-up vans of the city corporation, and DNCC Mayor Annisul Huq's SUV were vandalised. The adjoining Tejgaon and Sat Rasta Intersection remained closed to traffic for around three hours, which caused traffic tailbacks in the nearby areas.

Mayor caught in violence

As the violence unfolded outside, the mayor, who went to the Tejgaon truck stand around 1pm to oversee the eviction drive, stayed inside the Bangladesh Truck and Covered Van Union office there. Railways Minister Md Mazibul Hoque also went to the scene with Annisul, but left under police protection as violence broke.

"I have been running the Tejgaon bus stand eviction drive in consultation with the railways minister and local transport leaders for the sake of the city dwellers. I will not retreat from the drive in the face of protest from some grabbers," Mayor Annisul told news hounds while inside the union office.

"The drive will continue. This mayor is not a coward who will leave amid such chaos. We are clearing government land. The prime minister is with me in this move. I am not scared of anyone," he said. Commenting on the injuries, he said: "I have heard that one person was injured. But I have no idea if it is true or a rumour."

The mayor said some people were instigating others to throw bricks at law enforcers and the DCC officials.

Also present there, Truck and Covered Van Owners Association President Rustom Ali expressed his support for the eviction drive. "We have been announcing for the past three or four days to clear the truck stand. We fully support the eviction drive." He, however, added that some quarters had been trying to prevent the move. "Some grabbers, groups of workers and mechanics who are dependent on the truck stand for their livelihoods are instigating others against the eviction."

Yesterday's eviction drive follows an earlier ultimatum set by Mayor Annisul, who told truck owners on November 8 to clear illegal infrastructure from Tejgaon to increase parking space and reduce traffic congestion in the area.
