California jury says castrated sex offender no longer sexually violent, should be released
[Aypee] SANTA ANA, Calif. – A California jury has concluded that a castrated sex offender is no longer a sexually violent predator and is eligible for release from a mental hospital.

Lawyers involved in the case say the Orange County jury in Santa Ana reached its decision Friday. Deputy Public Defender Holly Galloway adds that 53-year-old Kevin Reilly could be released as early as Friday.

She says Reilly spent time in prison for sex offenses committed in the 1980s and 1990s. He has been confined to a state mental hospital since 2000. Galloway says Reilly had himself surgically castrated in 2003 to help control his pedophilia and completed a treatment program for sex offenders in 2010.
That took some nads.
Prosecutors opposed his release.

High school shooting leaves two dead, four injured near Seattle
[Iran Press TV] Two people have been killed and four others have been injured after a student shot up a high school north of Seattle in the US state of Washington.

The shooting incident happened in the cafeteria of Marysville Pilchuck High School on Friday morning. The gunman killed one person and injured four students before turning the gun on himself.

"We are now confirming one person that is deceased and that person is believed to be the shooter and at this point we do not believe there are any other shooters on campus," Marysville police front man Robb Lamoureux said.

In a statement following the incident, the Marysville school district said the school was in lock down due to an emergency situation.

"The Marysville School District lock down procedures will remain in effect at Pilchuck until further notice from law enforcement," the statement said. "We will continue to forward communication in cooperation with law enforcement."

Law enforcement officials told CNN three injured students were at death's door and one was at death's door.

The shooting caused students and staff members to run away from the school that has the large campus of more than 2,000 students.

FBI spokesperson in Seattle Ayn Dietrich announced that the agency would investigate the school shooting.

Texas Presbyterian Hospital nurses Nina Pham, Amber Vinson have officially tested free of Ebola
Dallas Presbyterian Hospital nurses Nina Pham, Amber Vinson have officially tested free of Ebola.

Nina Pham was discharged from the NIH hospital in Washington DC & briefly met with the president before leaving for her home. Officials at Emory Hospital in GA also officially confirmed Amber Vinson free of Ebola virus, but she remains hospitalized.

Nina is “cured of Ebola,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “Let’s get that clear. That’s for sure.”

And it was: Pham, dressed in a blue business suit and a turquoise top, hugged Fauci and delivered a brief statement to the media upon her release.

“Throughout this ordeal, I have put my trust in God and my medical team,” said Pham. “I am on my way to recovery even as I reflect on how so many others haven’t been so fortunate.” She also thanked Fort Worth doctor Kent Brantly, who donated some of his plasma, for his “selfless” act.

Pham met briefly with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office before her return to Dallas. The president hugged the nurse and wished her well before she walked out of the White House and got in a waiting car.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest said no extra precautions were taken to protect the president. A “clean bill of health” from the NIH is good enough, he said.

"Fauci said workers administered five separate tests, and she tested negative each time. He also said Pham was not given an experimental drug."
Dr. Brantley's plasma may not be considered an experimental drug, but giving it to Pham was an experimental treatment, unless treating acute Ebola with plasma from Ebola survivors is considered the standard.
It pretty much is now and was recognized as a therapy in the past. You just couldn't do such a thing in a third world country because they didn't have the ability to separate the plasma, test it to be sure it was free of other pathogens, and check to ensure that the antibody titer was appropriate. And so on. One of the advantages of being desperately ill in a first-world country...
WaPo does not even have this as its leading article, which seems strange. It does mention this: "The federal government is considering altering protocols for doctors and health-care workers who return to the U.S. from West Africa, the New York governor said."

About time. I wonder what the protocol for the NIH and Emory U hospital caretakers of Ebola patients now is.

#1  Illinois governor joins NY & NJ in ordering 21-day quarantine for Ebola patient contacts from the Hot Zone.
Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn announced Friday that he has ordered the Illinois Department of Public Health to require a mandatory 21-day home quarantine for "high-risk" individuals who have had direct contact with anyone infected with the Ebola virus while in Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea.

The directive was issued to every local health department in Illinois.

According to a news release issued by the governor's office, the mandatory quarantine order includes any high-risk medical personnel who have performed medical services to individuals infected with the Ebola virus.

The order will be implemented by local health departments across the state. Previously such medical personnel were subject to a voluntary quarantine.

The move also comes after the governors of New Jersey and New York on Friday ordered a similar if not the same mandatory, 21-day quarantine of all medical workers and other arriving airline passengers who have had contact with victims of the deadly disease in West Africa.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the case of Dr. Craig Spencer led them to conclude that the two states need precautions more rigorous than those of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends monitoring of exposed people for 21 days but doesn't require quarantine, in which they are kept away from others.

"It's too serious a situation to leave it to the honor system of compliance," Cuomo said.

Those in the two states who are forcibly quarantined will be confined either to their homes or, if they live in other states, to some other place, most likely a medical facility, the governors said. Those quarantined at home will receive house calls from health officials. Twenty-one days is the incubation period for the Ebola virus.

Dr. Howard Zucker, acting New York state health commissioner, said any medical personnel who have treated Ebola patients in the three Ebola-ravaged West African countries -- Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia -- will be automatically quarantined.

An Obama administration official said federal officials have been considering similar quarantine requirements for some time. But the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss deliberations by name, said the Obama administration was not yet ready to take that step at the federal level.

#2  Spain: Ebola-stricken nurse Teresa Romero has improved & has had 2 negative Ebola blood tests. Estimates are she will spend another week in hospital. She received an older version of ZMapp and immune serum infusions from a Spanish nun who survived her own Ebola infection in Liberia.
Now Teresa is fully compos mentis, she says she does not remember touching her face with her gloves whilst taking off her biohazard suit after treating missionary doctor Manuel García Viejo, who died from Ebola after being repatriated in a critical condition.

In her confused and delirious state in the early stages of her illness, she said she ‘probably said yes to whatever they asked’ her.

This Week in Guns: October 25th, 2014

By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

The shooting today in Seattle was over a girl, according to news reports. The shooting takes place at the same time as the Washington plebiscite which, if passed, will begun universal background checks for firearms sold in Washington state.

Dunno how the vote will break after this, but as usual -- and you can set your alarm clock by it -- fascists in the media are calling for even more draconian gun laws nationwide. We can expect the usual: a teary eyed parent of a shooting survivor featured on television news pleading with the public to save her little precious from Evil Firearms.

The good news is that a Canadian national government functionary "put down" a lethal threat to the Canadian parliament a few days ago. In honor of that blessed event, today's featured gun of the week is the firearm type used in the incident. A lot of people on our side will point out a "Good Guy with a gun" ended a potential massacre, except the Good Guy was, for all intents and purposes a government agent with a gun with which he was granted kind permission to carry as sergeant at arms.

It turns out that Eric Frein, the fugitive Pennsylvania state cops have been hunting for weeks shot a state police officer because one of the state police was having an affair with a relative of his. None of this tempers what the guy did, of course, but it appears a state police officer violated yet another social convention, and apparently has not only gotten away with it, but his affair now has the imprint of approval by the Pennsylvania state government. We know now one of two rifles used in the attack: a .308 NATO scoped rifle, or an AK-47. The .308 would be my guess, but then it's just a guess.

The cops have marked Frein for death, for at least making them look like Keystone Kops.

Loads.

At Least 824,000 Displaced by Ukraine Conflict
[AnNahar] The conflict in Ukraine has driven more than 824,000 people from their homes, the U.N. refugee agency said on Friday, warning that it was having to scramble aid to offset the impact of winter.

At least 430,000 people had been displaced within Ukraine as of Thursday, UNHCR said, 170,000 more than at the start of September.

"With the crisis in Ukraine entering its first winter, UNHCR is racing to help some of the most vulnerable displaced people cope with expected harsh winter conditions," the U.N. agency said.

"Ongoing fighting in the east, and the resulting breakdown of basic services, continues to drive more people from their homes," it added.

Around 95 percent of the displaced people are from conflict-torn eastern Ukraine.

UNHCR said that the need for humanitarian aid was greatest around Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kiev and in the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions.

In addition to those displaced within Ukraine, another 387,000 have fled to Russia, while 6,600 have applied for asylum in the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and 581 in Belarus, UNHCR said.

Mob beats up 'hit men' before law-enforcers arrive
[DAWN] A shopkeeper whose elder brother was recently killed in a suspected sectarian attack survived an attempt on his life in Incholi Society on Thursday afternoon when a mob got hold of two suspected hit men one of whom had allegedly tried to fire at the shopkeeper, according to police and witnesses.

The mob had severely beaten them up before the law-enforcers managed to take them away in an unconscious condition to a hospital.

As soon as Shakeel Haider arrived at his Haider Pakwan Centre in Block-17 of Federal B. Area adjacent to his home at around 3:30pm and got out of his car, two suspects came from behind him and one of them put a pistol to Mr Haider's head and asked him to recite 'Kalma,' said Mr Haider's nephew, Ahsan.

Mr Haider tried to push aside the attacker who opened fire but luckily the bullet got stuck in the pistol, giving Mr Haider an opportunity to raise alarm for help. His family members and area people rushed to his rescue and managed to get hold of the suspects.

They beat them up severely and in the meantime a man in the angry mob shot one of them in the leg.

In the meantime, contingents of police and Rangers rushed to the area. They faced some difficulty initially in controlling the situation as the angry mob was not ready to hand over the suspects to them.

Later, police and Rangers dispersed the mob by firing into the air and detained the suspects in an unconscious condition. They were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where their condition was stated to be serious, said Samanabad SHO Nadir Khan.

The officer identified the maimed suspects as Bilal Allah Ditta and Imran Latif and said at the moment they were not in a position to give a statement to police.

He said that Bilal hailed from Hub, Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
, while Imran was a resident of Hyderabad and claimed that the police had seized a 30-bore pistol, which appeared to be an old one with a bullet stuck inside.

The officer said the complainant, Shakeel Haider, told police that the suspects had made an attempt on his life but Sherlocks were probing the veracity of his claims and possible affiliation of the suspects with any group.

Eight months ago, Mr Haider's elder brother, Shahab Haider, was bumped off at his Al-Medina paan shop at around the same place in a sectarian attack, said the victim's nephew, Ahsan.

But AIG Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
police, Ghulam Qadir Thebo, said that a preliminary investigation suggested the incident was a robbery attempt. The suspects pursued Mr Haider after he drew cash from a bank branch in the area and tried to rob him, he said, adding that the suspects had no affiliation with any religious or political group.

11 students expelled from agricultural university
[DAWN] The administration of Agricultural University, Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
expelled 11 students for their alleged involvement in a clash on the campus wherein a student was killed.

The decision was taken in a joint meeting of all deans, heads of teaching and administrative departments and section heads of the university. The meeting also approved a cleanup operation in the university's hostels to purge the institution of arms, ammunitions and outsiders.

A neutral student Altaf Alam had sustained serious head injury when two groups of students exchanged fire in the university on Tuesday last. The injured student remained in comma for some time and breathed his last in the hospital. The incident forced the administration to take some necessary decisions to avert such ugly incidents in future.

The participants of the meeting condemned the incident and expressed their shock and grief over the loss of life of an innocent student. They said that wrangling amongst different groups of students was the main cause of the unfortunate incident.

The university management affirmed the commitment of zero tolerance for politically motivated violence and indiscipline of any sort, saying the violators would be dealt with an iron hand.

The participants of the meeting said that a handful of miscreants would not be allowed to play with the future of students. They added that a conducive and peaceful academic environment on the campus would be maintained at all costs.

The meeting unanimously decided immediate expulsion of 11 students involved in the incident in the light of the Supreme Court of Pakistain verdict of 1993 and imposition of ban on their entry in the campus.

The expelled students Mian Amad Ali, Junaid Ahmad, Usmanullah, Dawood Khan, Jawad, Ahmad Ali, Mohammad Nauman, Kaleem Tahir, Adil Jan, Syed Gohar Ali Shah and Waqar Ahmed Afridi.

The meeting was informed that some of the accused persons were tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
and efforts were made to apprehend the others charged in the case.

The meeting decided that a permanent mechanism would be devised and implemented to ensure daily screening of the hostels for targeting outsiders and unwanted material. All the university entry and exit points would be properly guarded through police and their opening and closing timings would be strictly observed.

Similarly, the road in new development farm leading to Nasir Bagh Road would be allowed only for vehicles bearing university stickers.

Find another urban stereotype of fly over country to satisfy their bigotry of the 'others' and reinforce their prejudices. I guess Springer has too many urban representatives to cover the trailer park tribes for the progressives' taste. Who needs balance? /rhet question
