US judge orders accused Russian agent jailed pending trial
More on the criminal complaint we saw yesterday.
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] A judge on Wednesday ordered an accused Russian agent locked away

until her trial after US prosecutors argued she has ties to Russian intelligence and could flee the United States.

Prosecutors have not charged the agent they identified as Maria Butina with espionage, but said she had been in contact with Russian intelligence operatives and kept contact information for several Russian agents.

During a preliminary hearing in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, the lead prosecutor in the case showed a photo of Butina in a Washington restaurant meeting with someone whom they believe is a Russian intelligence agent.

The 29-year-old former American University graduate student wore an orange prison jumpsuit in court and showed no emotion as her lawyer entered a not-guilty plea. Butina’s next court appearance was scheduled for July 24.

The government also displayed a copy of a handwritten note uncovered by the FBI at Butina’s apartment asking how to respond to an employment offer from a Russian intelligence agency, as well as a photo of her standing in front of the US Capitol on the day Donald Trump

was sworn in as president 18 months ago.

"We do not believe she was here ... just to attend American University," said Erik Michael Kenerson, the lead prosecutor, adding that Butina was engaged in a "covert influence campaign."

Butina’s attorney, Robert Driscoll, said she is not a Russian agent and poses no flight risk. She was tossed in the calaboose

Russia says no grounds for arrest in U.S. of suspected Russian agent: RIA

[AlAhram] Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday the arrest in the United States of a 29-year-old woman accused of being a Russian agent was carried out to spoil the positive impact of Monday's Russia-U.S. summit in Helsinki, RIA news agency reported.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was cited as saying there were no grounds for the detention of Russian Maria Butina, who was incarcerated

On the slopes of northern Ecuador's Quijo Valley, perpetual clouds shroud the canopy of a seemingly pristine tropical forest. But the beauty of the cloud forest hides a violent, tragic history. A new study of sediments from the valley's Lake Huila reveals centuries of indigenous agriculture that came to an abrupt end in warfare and fire around 1588.

China says US dragging entire global economy into place of danger
[PRESSTV] China has once again censured the United States for its trade policies, saying Washington would be to blame for a chaotic global economy if it sticks with its "willful" decisions on trade.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Wednesday that the US was killing confidence in global economy by slapping tariffs on imports from allies and rivals.

"The US trade war is not just with China but with the rest of the world. By regarding the rest of the world as adversaries, the US has dragged the entire global economy into a place of danger," Hua said, adding that the US-driven trade war was the biggest "confidence killer" for global economy.

China and the US have imposed tariffs worth $34 billion on each other’s imports. US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
, who initiated trade disputes by announcing controversial tariffs on the import of metals in March, has threatened that he would introduce further duties on Chinese imports if Beijing continues with its retaliatory measures.

Hua, however, repeated previous statements that China was fully ready to respond to any new US tariff, saying if Washington continued to be "willful," China and other countries affected by the trade policy would not hesitate to react.

"If the US continues to be willful, countries around the world will only harden their resolve to hit back," said the Chinese official.

Economy
Gold hits year low
[DAWN] Gold hit its lowest in a year on Tuesday as the dollar steadied and most other markets were subdued before Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell testifies to the US Congress. Powell will likely reiterate the Fed’s plan for gradual monetary policy tightening as he takes his upbeat view of the US economy to Capitol Hill later this session. Markets will focus on his views on recent trade tensions, however.

A strong dollar tends to weigh on gold by making the dollar-priced metal costlier for non-US investors. Spot gold was down 0.7 per cent at $1,231.89 an ounce at 1329 GMT, having hit its lowest since last July at $1,230.40.

The precious metal is down some 5pc for the year. US gold futures for August delivery were down 0.8pc at $1,231.80 an ounce.

Measure to split California into three states removed from ballot by the state Supreme Court
[LATimes] The California Supreme Court decided unanimously Wednesday to remove from the November ballot a measure aimed at dividing California into three states.
Of course they did
The decision was a defeat for Tim Draper, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist considered an eccentric entrepreneur who spent $1.2 million on the measure.

Four years ago, the wealthy Atherton resident spent $5.2 million promoting a measure that would have split California into six states. It did not qualify for the ballot.

He reacted angrily to the court's action, calling it "corruption."

"Whether you agree or not with this initiative, this is not the way democracies are supposed to work," he said in an email. "This kind of corruption is what happens in Third World countries."

He said the state's "insiders" were "in cahoots."

In a brief order, the court said it acted "because significant questions have been raised regarding the proposition's validity and because we conclude that the potential harm in permitting the measure to remain on the ballot outweighs the potential harm in delaying the proposition to a future election."

The court, meeting in closed session, also agreed to rule eventually on the measure's constitutionality, a ruling that is likely to go against the initiative. The challenge was filed last week by the Planning and Conservation League, an environmental group.
An environmental group? Really? Why would they be against splitting the state, I wonder? Not enough opportunity for graft?

#1  Here's what I don't get - if one of the stated goals / results of this measure would be getting up to four more lefty Senators, then why would the presumably leftist cal. SC nix the measure?

Also - I'm not swayed by the little ditty by the court about the 'significant questions' being raised about 'validity' - what questions / validity, exactly?

Blue Origin launches, lands New Shepard spaceship
[PRESSTV] Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' space transportation company, Blue Origin, successfully launched a New Shepard spaceship from its launch site in west Texas on Wednesday.

The rocket's booster and capsule were successfully recovered back at its launch site. This specific booster used has been now recovered for the third time, a key step in its drive to make reusable rockets, the company says.

The New Shepard rocket, which is designed to carry six passengers, blasted off from a launch site in Van Horn, West Texas and is the sixth successful launching and landing.

Blue Origin is among a handful of companies developing unpiloted vehicles to carry cargo and paying passengers into space.
