Perspectives on a Stefan Halper 'outing.'
[The Hill] Glenn Greenwald, a leftist, offers his perspective on the man the FBI selected to spy on the Trump campaign and on the brouhaha surrounding his "outing." First, Greenwald says that this man, now a professor, was responsible for spying on the Carter administration on behalf of Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign in 1980. He did this, by running a scheme whereby CIA operatives passed classified information about Carter’s foreign policy to Reagan campaign officials in order to ensure the Reagan campaign knew of any foreign policy decisions Carter was considering.

If true, this means, that (in Greenwald’s words) "the informant used by the FBI in 2016 to gather information on the Trump campaign was not some previously unknown, top-secret asset whose exposure as an operative could jeopardize lives." Rather, "his decades of work for the CIA ‐ including his role in an obviously unethical if not criminal spying operation during the 1980 presidential campaign ‐ is quite publicly known." Indeed, it can be discover from public records showing him to be a CIA "vendor."

Patricia Morison, star of Broadway and Hollywood, dies aged 103
[Guardian] Patricia Morison, who originated the role of an overemotional diva in the Broadway musical Kiss Me, Kate, starred on stage opposite Yul Brynner in The King and I and appeared in films with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, died on Sunday at the age of 103.

Morison died of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles, publicist Harlan Boll said. Morison’s death was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

With her long auburn hair and fiery blue-gray eyes, Morison radiated a sophisticated sex appeal. She had "the most sensual mouth of any lady in the movies", Gregory William Mank wrote in his book Women in Horror Films, 1940s.

NRA boss Oliver North blames Ritalin, ‘culture of violence’ for school shootings
[NYDAILYNEWS] Incoming NRA President Oliver North tried to blame the rash of school shootings across the U.S., including the massacre at a Texas high school Friday, on video games and ADHD medication instead of access to firearms.

The gun lobby's newest spokesman said the wave of killings were carried out by "young boys" who "have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten."
The gun lobby's newest spokesman said the wave of killings were carried out by "young boys" who "have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten."

"I am certainly not a doctor, I'm a Marine, but I can see those kinds of things happening," North said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

His claim comes two days after teen gunman Dimitrios Pagourtzis killed 10 of his classmates and teachers at Santa Fe High School with a handgun and a shotgun.
I don't know if he's right or wrong. I do know that when I was a kid there wasn't any Ritalin and there weren't any school shootings. I have watched my grandson playing video games and I thought they were disgustingly violent.
My mother says the same about the cartoons that children watched in the 1960s.

A combination of, totally unnatural, robot like behavior with occasional violent outbursts - all that suppressed energy has to go somewhere, is the hallmark. De Blasio to tell NYPD to stop arresting New Yorkers for smoking pot in public
But tobacco is still streng verboten.
[NYDAILYNEWS] Mayor de Blasio will tell the NYPD to stop arresting people for public pot smoking — and launch a new group to officially prepare the city for the outright legalization of marijuana in New York

That policy change will be part of a 30-day review the mayor announced last week to address the massive racial disparity in marijuana arrests.
De Blasio, who has long opposed making recreational pot legal, now says he thinks legalization is inevitable and is creating an official task force to get ready for the day when that happens and implement the new law.

While pot remains illegal, Hizzoner will direct the NYPD to give summonses to people they catch smoking in public instead of arresting them, his aides said Sunday.

That policy change will be part of a 30-day review the mayor announced last week to address the massive racial disparity in marijuana arrests.

Venezuela Pres. Maduro Rebukes U.S. Criticism Of Election Results
[OANN] Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro rebukes America’s criticism of elections in the country.

Maduro warned the U.S. against interfering in Venezuela’s home affairs, in a televised address Sunday.

Maduro hurled several insults at the U.S. government and the American people.

Deputy State Secretary John Sullivan said the U.S. wouldn’t recognize the election and could slap new oil sanctions against the corrupt regime.

State Secretary Mike Pompeo referred to the Venezuelan elections as a ’sham.’

Maduro claimed victory Sunday, winning a new six-year term.

Can Venezuela survive another Maduro 'victory'?
[MIAMIHERALD] As Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro seeks another six-year term on Sunday, it’s clear that he ‐ like the rest of the country ‐ is running on empty.

Oil-rich and wealthy just a few years ago, Venezuela today is being gutted by hyperinflation, food shortages, collapsing infrastructure, international sanctions, growing protests and an exodus of the desperate.

Maduro, 55, is expected to win Sunday’s vote, which is being decried as fraudulent by the international community, amid opposition calls for a boycott.

And analysts expect that will mean more pain, trouble and repression for the struggling South American country.

"Nations don’t reach bottom. There is always further to fall," Phil Gunson, an analyst with the Crisis Group, said at a conference at the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center in Washington, D.C., Thursday. "But it does seem like life as we know it in Venezuela will be impossible unless there is a radical change."

And yet it’s hard to imagine how that change might come.

On the campaign trail, Maduro has vowed to use his next term to pull out of the economic death spiral that many people blame him for starting in the first place.

"I am going to lead great economic changes, and I am going to create an economic revolution that will shake the world," he said at his closing campaign Thursday. "Whatever it costs, however long it takes, I will do it."
"I am going to lead great economic changes, and I am going to create an economic revolution that will shake the world," he said at his closing campaign Thursday. "Whatever it costs, however long it takes, I will do it."

But during his campaign, he's been doubling down on the same failing policies, taking over the country’s largest private bank, Banesco, forcing companies to slash prices and expropriating others.

It's hard to imagine Maduro, a former transportation worker, changing his economic playbook after the election, Gunson said.

"Maduro, the bus driver, is going to drive the bus over a cliff," he said.

Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet to receive 70 more ships by 2027
I realize the price of oil popped up following President Trump’s rejection of his predecessor’s little deal, but can Russia afford this?
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet (PF) will receive more than 70 ships by 2027, the commander of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Sergei Avakyants said on Sunday.

"Until 2027, the total number of the newest warships and vessels that will replenish the Pacific Fleet will exceed 70 units," Avakyants said in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, published on the website of the newspaper on Monday.

He recalled that the total number of 20380 series corvettes is planned to increaseto eight, and that in 2019 a contract will be signed for the construction of six small missile ships of Project 22800 for the Pacific Fleet.

"Also, the second small marine tanker with a displacement of more than 3,000 tons was recently laid for us at the plant, which is gradually equipped with modern floating equipment and sub-units of naval rescuers," the commander added.

In the near future, servicemen of the Pacific Fleet will start developing diesel-electric submarines of Project 636.3. Also, according to the commander, it is planned to modernize and re-equip the 949A nuclear missile cruisers.

Soviet WWII warship lost on Lake Ladoga found
[SputnikNews] Submariners began on May 19 to lift parts of the ship that was for many years considered forever lost to the bottom of Lake Ladoga.

Belarusian diver Igor Matyuk discovered the remains of the flagship of the Ladoga flotilla, the so-called "Purga" guard ship. Divers had been unable to find the "Purga" for a long time. While the location of the nearly 100-meter ship was already presumed, the bottom of the lake was unable to be investigated using devices, but required the divers to examine the location themselves. The flagship took fought its last battle in 1942 near the Osinovetsky lighthouse, but was finally sunk as the result of a German airstrike.

#1  Wiki: "The Uragan-class guard ships were built for the Soviet Navy as small patrol and escort ships. Eighteen were built in the 1930s and served during World War II in all four of the Soviet Fleets: Baltic, Black Sea, Northern and Pacific. Four were lost during the war and the rest remained in service until the late 1950s in various secondary roles. The official Soviet designation was Project "2, Project 4 and Project 39, but they were nicknamed the "Bad Weather Flotilla" by Soviet sailors by virtue of their meteorological names. Heh.

"Sunk 1 September 1942, but later raised"

Something tells me there is an interesting story about this ship.

German Chamber of Commerce: Companies worry Trump moving toward 'America Alone'
[Reuters] BERLIN - German companies are concerned that U.S. President Donald Trump is increasingly thinking only of America rather than just putting his country first, the head of Germany’s DIHK Chambers of Commerce told media.

The United States has pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and Germany has acknowledged it could be hard to protect companies doing business with Iran, as a senior U.S. official renewed a threat of sanctions against European firms.

German companies also face the prospect of possible extra levies ‐ Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum in March but the European Union has been granted exemptions until June 1.

"America First now increasingly means America Alone," DIHK President Eric Schweitzer told the RND group of newspapers. "That makes German businesses really worried."

Nonetheless, a DIHK survey published earlier this month showed a record number of German companies believe economies in foreign markets where they do business will improve despite rising political and trade risks.

US, China agree to abandon trade war
[Yahoo] Washington and Beijing have agreed to abandon any trade war and back off from imposing tariffs on each other, Chinese state media reported Sunday.
Gee... it almost seems like Trump knows how to drive a deal even when making threats.
The announcement came after high-level talks in the US capital and followed months of tensions over what President Donald Trump has blasted as an unfair commercial relationship between the two economic giants.

Vice-Premier Liu He, who led Chinese negotiators in Washington said: "The two sides reached a consensus, will not fight a trade war, and will stop increasing tariffs on each other," state-run news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.
Great. Remove the unfair trade practices against us and we might have a deal
Liu called the agreement a "necessity", but added: "At the same time it must be realised that unfreezing the ice cannot be done in a day, solving the structural problems of the economic and trade relations between the two countries will take time."

An earlier joint statement issued in Washington said Beijing would "significantly" increase its purchases of American goods, but offered few details.

The apparent detente comes after months of increasing tensions that have set markets on edge over fears of a damaging trade war.

Trump has repeatedly railed against his country's trade deficit with China, describing it as a danger to US national security and threatening to impose tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of Chinese goods.

US levies on $50 billion of Chinese imports could have come into effect as early as next week.

The talks in Washington were between delegations led by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Liu, who also met Thursday with Trump. The sides had met earlier in Beijing.

"There was a consensus on taking effective measures to substantially reduce the United States trade deficit in goods with China," the joint statement said.

"To meet the growing consumption needs of the Chinese people and the need for high-quality economic development, China will significantly increase purchases of United States goods and services."

- 'Meaningful increases' -
Last year, the United States had a $375.2 billion trade deficit with China, with populist politicians blaming the Asian powerhouse for the leeching of American jobs over the last few decades.

Washington reportedly had demanded the deficit be slashed by at least $200 billion by 2020.

However, the joint statement held no indication that China had assented to that target.

It said both sides had agreed on "meaningful increases" in US agriculture and energy exports. Liu said the new trade cooperation would extend to medical care, high-tech products, and finance, according to Xinhua.

They also agreed to strengthen cooperation on protecting intellectual property -- a long-standing source of US discontent.

The two countries, their economies enormously interlinked, opened the delicate negotiations a few weeks ago.

Trump had threatened China with tariffs on up to $150 billion of imports, prompting Beijing to warn it would target US agricultural exports, aircraft, and even whiskey.

The late Michael Hastings - 'Why Democrats Love to Spy On Americans'
[Wiki] Hastings became a vocal critic of the Obama administration, Democratic Party and surveillance state during the investigation of reporters by the U.S. Department of Justice in 2013, referring to the restrictions on the freedom of the press by the Obama administration as a "war" on journalism.[4] His last story, "Why Democrats Love to Spy On Americans", was published by BuzzFeed on June 7, 2013.[5][6] Hastings died in an automobile crash on June 18, 2013, in Los Angeles, California.[7] Blue Rider Press posthumously published his only novel, The Last Magazine (2014), a year after his death.[8]

#1  Perhaps we were told, but no one listened. Excerpt from the Hastings article:

The very topic of Democratic two-facedness on civil liberties is one of the most important issues that Greenwald has covered. Many of those Dems — including the sitting President Barack Obama, Senator Carl Levin, and Secretary of State John Kerry — have now become the stewards and enhancers of programs that appear to dwarf any of the spying scandals that broke during the Bush years, the very same scandals they used as wedge issues to win elections in the Congressional elections 2006 and the presidential primary of 2007-2008.

Recall what Senator Levin told CNN in 2005, demanding to "urgently hold an inquiry" into what was supposedly President Bush's domestic wiretap program.

I suspect there may be, or have already been additional "natural occurances."

Muslim man beaten to death in India for allegedly slaughtering cows
[DAWN] A Moslem man was beaten to death by a mob in India's Madhya Pradesh on the suspicion of slaughtering cattle, the Hindustan Times reported on Saturday.

Police identified the dear departed as Riaz, a 45-year-old tailor. His friend, Shakeel, 38, was injured in the alleged assault and admitted in a hospital in Jabalpur in a critical condition.

They were allegedly beaten up by attackers armed with sticks in Amgara village, about 28km from their home in the Purani Basti neighbourhood of Maihar town, in the early hours of Friday.

According to Indian Express, four accomplices of Riaz and Shakeel fled from the scene when the villagers "found a group with cattle".

In his complaint to the police, Shakeel denied any involvement in slaughtering cattle. Meanwhile,
...back at the shootout, Butch shot Black Bart's other gun out of his other hand......
one of his alleged attackers, Pawan Singh Gond, filed a complaint against Shakeel and Riaz for slaughtering cows.

Police have registered a first information report (FIR) under sections of the Madhya Pradesh Cow Slaughter Ban Act, 2004, and the Madhya Pradesh Agriculture Cattle Preservation Act, 1959 against Riaz and Shakeel, Hindustan Times reported.

"On the basis of the FIR lodged by the villager, Shakeel will be incarcerated
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
after he is discharged from the hospital," a police officer was quoted as saying. He added that carcases of two cows were recovered from the village.

The maximum punishment for cow slaughter in Madhya Pradesh is seven years imprisonment.

Attacks by 'cow protection' vigilante groups have been on the rise in recent years in India.

Larkana doctor arrested over charges of rape and intimidation
[DAWN] Larkana police on Sunday arrested a doctor along with a lady manager of a vocational centre over charges of rape and intimidation.

In a First Information Report (FIR) lodged with Lashari police station on Sunday, a woman alleged that the doctor in question and a female manager of a women's vocational centre in Bangul Dero visited her house and sought permission from her parents that she be allowed to travel with them to Karachi for eye treatment, as one NGO had agreed to bear the expenses.

"We went to a private hospital where my eyesight was checked and medicines prescribed," she said in the FIR.

Upon their return to Bangul Dero, the doctor allegedly gave the girl some pills and injected her at his clinic resulting in her losing consciousness.

"The doctor raped me while I was in a semi-conscious state," the FIR quoted the victim as saying.

The FIR also states that the doctor threatened the victim to keep quiet by showing a pistol and told her that a video had been recorded on a cellphone.

"Under fear and depression I was silent but on the night of May 19 I dreamt of the same events and got up with a start. My parents insisted that I tell them what had happened, so finally I narrated to them the entire episode," the victim said in her statement to the police.

Larkana SSP Tanveer Hussain Tunio said that a case had been registered at the Lashari police station on the complaint of the victim under Sections 376 (punishment for rape), 337-J (causing hurt by means of poison), 354-A (assault or use of criminal force to woman and stripping her of her clothes), and 506/2 (punishment for criminal intimidation if threat be to cause death or grievous hurt, etc.) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Subsequently, the police arrested the accused doctor and the head of the women's vocational centre for further interrogation.

Pope to appoint 14 new cardinals including one from Pakistan
[DAWN] Pope Francis announced on Sunday that he will hold a meeting of the Church's top council to appoint 14 new cardinals next month, including from Iraq, Pakistain, Madagascar and Japan.

In the event of a conclave of cardinals to name a new pope, 11 of the new 14 being under 80 years of age would be eligible to take part.

"I am happy to announce that on June 29 there will be a consistory meeting to appoint 14 new cardinals. Their origins reflect the universality of the church," Pope Francis said in an address in Saint Peter's square.

Among the new cardinals will be Iraq's Louis Sako who has often met Pope Francis to discuss the situation in the war-torn country and the plight of its Christian community.

From Pakistain comes Joseph Coutts of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
with Desire Tsarahazana from Toamasina in Madagascar and Thomas Aquinas Manyo from Osaka in Japan.

As well as having the key role of choosing a new pope, cardinals often also hold the highest administrative offices in the church.

Pope Francis, the first head of the church from Latin America is 81 and was named in 2013 after his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI stood down citing the effect of advancing age on his ability to carry out the exacting duties of the office.
