Afghanistan
Alarm Bells Ring Over High ANA Casualty Rate
The tree of Afghan freedom, watered with so much blood.
[ToloNews] Senators in the Meshrano Jirga (Upper House of Parliament) on Sunday summoned Ministers of Defense and Interior and the deputy head of the National Directorate of Security
...the Afghan national intel agency...
(NDS) to answer questions over the increase of insecurity in the country and the high casualty toll among security forces.

Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Tariq Shah Bahrami acknowledged the casualty toll problem among Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers and said in the past month 513 soldiers were killed.

Bahrami said this had been one of the worst months in terms of deaths among security forces. He also said at least 718 were maimed and 43 were captured by turbans.

He however emphasized that the corpse count among bandidos turbans was three to four times higher.

"Unfortunately, in the last one month 513 ANA soldiers were killed, 718 maimed and 43 captured; it was the highest number of fatalities we have had in a single month. Compared to the fatalities among our security forces, the enemy suffered three to four times more than us," said Bahrami.

Senators however blasted security departments over their inability to prevent attacks in provinces as well as in Kabul city.

The senators said instead of preventing attacks, security forces were being used to retrieve bodies following such incidents.

"The bandidos turbans carry out attacks and loot properties, but when we (security forces) get there, we only collect bodies and assess damage caused to the area," senate Mohammad Alam Ezedyar said.

"You take control of the city after it is attacked, and everything is destroyed. You become proud that you have taken the city back, what kind of pride is this? Why should a city collapse?" said senator Abdullah Qaraloq.

"What is the main problem? Afghanistan is in a very bad situation," said another senator Zalmai Zabuli.

The defense minister said currently the Afghan cops are not being backed up by air support at night and that this is proving a big challenge.

Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak meanwhile responded to senators questions on the calls for a review of the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Kabul and Washington.

Barmak said the BSA was an important instrument for stability in the region and Afghanistan and that it helps to maintain security in the country.

"I told you earlier that daily 30 ANA and police soldiers get killed," said Barmak.

"Those who oppose the BSA are working in the interests of neighboring countries," said Bahrami.

Up To 200 People Fall Victim To Mines Every Month
[ToloNews] Officials from the Mine Detection Center (MDC) on Sunday said each month up to 200 people in the country fall victim to IEDs ‐ both newly planted devices and unwent kaboom! mines going back to the civil war.

MDC officials were speaking at an event in Kabul that was held to mark the International Day of Peace.

Mohammad Shahab Hakimi, head of MDC, said most of the victims are unaware of where these explosives are and also do not know what to do when they step on a mine.

"Every months between 180 and 200 people (are killed and maimed), it means 2,000 people a year become victims of mines. The fatalities have increased," said Hakimi.

In the meantime, State Minister for Natural Disaster Management Najib Aqa Fahim said in the past 30 years 19 million unwent kaboom! mines and IED have been detected and defused around the country.

"Over 2,500 square kilometers of land in Afghanistan has been cleared of mines and around 19 million mines and bombs have been detected and defused," said Fahim.

Fahim also said there is still 2,000 square kilometers of land in the country that needs to be cleared of mines and explosives devices.

Nafisa, a woman in Kabul who works with the MDC said she works in the field to detect, defuse and to provide awareness training to people about mines. She said this is in the hope of saving lives and securing the environment.

Nafisa said she has worked for MDC for two years. "I get happy when a man, woman or child becomes aware of mines - which is the enemy of all of us," said Nafisa.

Mohamamd Ali, another MDC employee said he has been working in the demining sector for 21 years ‐ even during the civil war ‐ when he worked in remote areas, in the mountains and deserts -detecting and defusing mines.

President Ghani supports utilization of biometrics system in upcoming elections
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
has said the utilization of biometrics system in upcoming parliamentary elections is an important step to ensure the transparency of the elections.
Telling, when Afghanistan has a more sophisticated electoral system than ours.
He made the remarks during the last meeting of the security and defense sector for the security and safety of elections on Saturday evening.
Of course, they are suppressing the black vote.
The Bangladeshis?
The Office of the President, ARG Palace, quoting President Ghani in a statement said the difference between the government and the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
group is the approach through democratic elections and use of weapons.

President Ghani further added that the government relies on the vote of the people while the Taliban relies on use of weapons.

He said no governmental and security officials including the national defense and security forces have the right to interfere in election affairs, warning that any meddling would be dealt with through legal procedures.

According to President Ghani, the parliamentary elections would be organized in the lights of the laws of the country and no election office should be closed, emphasizing that there is no justification to close the election offices.

ARG Palace in its statement said the meeting was also attended by the security and defense sector officials, election commission officials, army, intelligence, and provincial security commanders.

Europe
One year on, “far right” has transformed German politics
NB: Scare quotes in the headline are mine.
[IsraelTimes] Taking up 92 seats in the lower house of parliament, the country’s largest opposition party uses every chance it gets to rail against immigration, Islam and Chancellor Merkel

A year after surging into parliament, politicians from the far-right AfD party have upended the normally staid world of German politics, with provocations and insults now the order of the day in the venerable Bundestag.

Taking up 92 seats in the lower house of parliament, the country’s largest opposition party uses every chance it gets to rail against immigration, Islam and especially Chancellor Angela Merkel

#3  The transformation of German politics was caused by Merkel's transformation of a traditional center-right big tent party into a party of the extreme left.

The AfD didn't cause anything, the rise of the AfD was caused by Merkel's transformation.

Setting the tone in the first parliamentary session, AfD parliamentary group chief Bernd Baumann said "a new era begins now", and promptly sparked a row with an erroneous historical remark about notorious Nazi Hermann Goering.

This is, at best, unintentionally misleading.

Prior to the election of 2017 the rules on selecting the ceremonial acting President of the Bundestag, who holds office until a President of the Bundestag is elected were changed to the detriment of the AfD.

This was a break with German paliamentary tradition. Baumann compared this to Goering's abolition of the office of acting President in 1933.

Baumann did not praise Goering as the article insinuates.

Since then, the once consensus-driven mood in the glass-domed Bundestag has given way to fierce debates peppered with taunts and calls to order.

There's been indeed a partial return to the normalcy of robust debate in parliament.

A 100% leftist parliament is naturally more consensus driven than a 87% leftist parliament.
In a vital Western democracy such 'consensus' is nothing that is desirable however.

#4  Since then, the once consensus-driven mood in the glass-domed Bundestag has given way to fierce debates peppered with taunts and calls to order.

I still remember REAL debates with Strauss, Kohl, Brandt, Schmidt and Wehner.

A "consensus driven parliament" has me worried much more. It came to be because the (former) "Great Coalition" dwarfed any opposition. The voter then made sure that the Great Coalition turned into a not so great one and if you believe the latest polls it now it doesn't even have a majority at all.

The AfD is a very mixed bag. I don't like it at all, but most AfD members hold positions the CDU/CSU held a few decades ago. They do have a few shady characters and Nazi apologists. But if the CDU/CSU becomes a conservative party again, the AfD will vanish.

#7  Saxony premier: 'There was no pogrom in Chemnitz'

Now, I'm not saying there are no Neo-Nazis in Germany. In fact, the Merkel admin actions seems to be custom-designed to produce Neo-Nazis. However, I do believe, that the label is used by the the left to mark anybody to the right of themselves. And I also believe that Muslims are more dangerous.

#8  "Far right" is merely, "MSM lied about how far left your parties were".
Posted by: Bright Pebbles || 09/24/2018 6:47 Comments || Top||

#9  In the view of the German and Austrian mainstream press Daniel Pipes and Ezra Levant are 'right-wing extremist who conduct a pilgrimage to Hitler's hometown'.

Political labels assigned by this mainstream press should be taken and accepted only with more than a grain of salt.

When Social Democratic MP Johannes Kahrs called the presence of right-wing Lions of Islam in the Bundestag "unappetising", the AfD’s entire parliamentary faction walked out in protest.

Nothing new, here's a clip of the CDU/CSU walking out in protest in 1975.

I still remember REAL debates with Strauss, Kohl, Brandt, Schmidt and Wehner.

The clip above shows Wehner acting thuggishly and then wailing in unsavory self-pity. This isn't aesthetically pleasing, just the normal and desirable robust debate in a Western democratic parliament.

The presence of the AfD is reintroducing this normalcy.

#10  Well Wehner was probably the most despicable politician in the German Bundestag. But debates were entertaining.

Swiss region overwhelmingly votes for 'burqa ban'
[DAWN] A second Swiss canton will introduce a regional "burqa ban", after voters in St Gallen on Sunday emphatically backed prohibiting all face-covering garments in public spaces.

At the same time, voters across Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
resoundingly rejected initiatives aimed at boosting local farming and promoting more ethical and environmental standards in food production, amid fears of cost hikes and reduced consumer choice.

In the northeastern canton of St Gallen, nearly 67 per cent of voters came out in favour of introducing the implicit "burqa ban", according to official results, which showed turnout was 36 per cent.

That paves the way for the canton to follow the example of the southern region of Ticino, where a law was introduced two years ago that appeared to be aimed at burqas and other Moslem veils.

Three other cantons ‐ Zurich, Solothurn and Glarus ‐ have rejected introducing such bans in recent years.

A text stipulating that "any person who renders themselves unrecognisable by covering their face in a public space, and thus endangers public security or social and religious peace will be fined" was adopted by politicians in St Gallen late last year.

India-Pakistan
Poliovirus that originated in Afghanistan detected in Rawalpindi
[DAWN] Poliovirus that originated in the Northern Corridor in Afghanistan ‐ Kandahar and Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
‐ has been detected in various Pak cities including Rawalpindi.

Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication National Coordinator Rana Mohammad Safdar said the virus has been detected in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
and other cities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as well.

"This shows that there is a threat because of the virus, which is travelling with people from Afghanistan to Pakistain, so we need to ensure our children’s immunity level is high to keep them safe from the virus," he added.

A total of 14 cases have been reported near the border in Afghanistan, as polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
vaccination campaigns cannot be held in some provinces for security reasons.

The area where the poliovirus originated can be detected through DNA testing. In 2013, the Syrian government had alleged that poliovirus that originated in the then Federally Administered Tribal Areas had travelled to Syria because of Paks who were fighting alongside rebels.

OPEC raises forecast based on US oil production
[DAWN] The OPEC oil cartel raised its global production forecast on Sunday based on higher-than-predicted US output in a report outlining a long-term rise in net demand, particularly in developing countries.

In its annual World Oil Outlook, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries forecast world supply of all hydrocarbons (primarily oil and liquified natural gas) would rise from a current 98.4 million barrels per day (mbd) to 104.5 million by 2023, and 111.9 million by 2040.

The figures are higher than last year's forecast, with rising production in non-cartel states led by the United States a major factor.

Non-member production overall is forecast to rise by 8.6 mbd to 66.1 mbd by 2023 on higher global demand, the report added, but a relative tapering off from 2020 will see cartel members' crude production shrug off a medium-term trend fall, OPEC predicted.

The body said demand would continue rising despite electric-powered vehicles taking an increasing market share and political moves to champion renewable energy.

Iran-backed militias accused of reign of fear in Iraqi Basra
[IsraelTimes] Beatings and arbitrary arrests reported amid growing public protests over Iranian influence and crumbling public services.

Hajar Youssif, an Iraqi activist and volunteer medic who was kidnapped, beaten and threatened for attending protests, believes the attack was part of what she and other activists describe as a campaign of intimidation and arbitrary detentions by powerful Iranian-backed Shiite militias and political groups that control Basra, a city of more than 2 million people in southern Iraq’s Shiite Moslem heartland.

Angry Basra residents have repeatedly taken to the streets in recent weeks to protest failing government services, including water contamination that sent thousands to hospitals.

IDF rejects Russian findings on plane downing
[Ynet] Israeli military expresses disagreement over Russian Defense Ministry's conclusion that IAF bears responsibility for Syrian army's shooting down of Russian aircraft, claiming IDF planes were not in Syrian airspace at time of incident.

The IDF rejected on Saturday the Russian Defense Ministry’s investigation findings on Syria’s downing of Russian plane, which concluded that Israel bears responsibility for the incident that killed 15 people.

According to the Russian report presented by the Defense Ministry, the IAF deceived the Russians by presenting false information regarding the area in which the strike in Latakia was planned on September 17 which prevented the Russian plane from leaving the danger zone.

I also like this bit from the Jerusalem Post op-ed, above (Don’t Be Fooled):

In a turn of events that could only happen in the Middle East, the Syrian army shoots down a Russian spy plane following an Israeli attack on an Iranian facility meant to manufacture precision arms for Hezbollah in Leb ‐ and Israel gets blamed.

That chain of events brings to mind Menachem Begin's famous line after the Sabra and Shatila massacres in 1982: "Non-jews kill non-Jews, and they immediately come to hang the Jews."

But if I recall correctly, Menachem Begin also made aliyah from Russia.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Pro-Turkey Syria Rebels Cautiously Accept Idlib Deal
[AnNahar] Pro-The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
rebels have cautiously accepted a Moscow-Ankara deal to prevent a Russia-backed regime attack on Syria's last major opposition bastion of Idlib, while a small jihadist group has rejected it.

The dominant force in the northwestern region bordering Turkey, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
(HTS) alliance led by jihadists of Syria's former al-Qaeda affiliate, had on Sunday however still not responded.

Late Saturday, the National Liberation Front (NLF)
...the alliance formed and commanded by Turkey, whose largest segment is the Islamist group Harakat Ahrar al-Sham...
rebel alliance in a statement accepted the deal reached on Monday for Idlib, but said they remained on their guard.

They announced "our full cooperation with our Ottoman Turkish ally in helping to make a success their efforts to spare civilians from the afflictions of war."

"But we will stay alert to any betrayal by the Russians, the regime or the Iranians," the NLF warned, fearing the agreement to be "temporary."

"We will not abandon our weapons, our land or our revolution" against the Russia- and Iran-backed forces of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Horror of Homs...
, the rebels said.

Also on Saturday, in a statement circulated on social media, the al-Qaeda-linked Hurras al-Deen rejected the agreement reached in the Russian resort of Sochi.

"We at the Hurras al-Deen organization again announce our rejection of these conspiracies," it said.

Monday's agreement provides for a U-shaped buffer zone 15 to 20 kilometres (9 to 12 miles) wide to be set up around Idlib.

Under the deal, all factions in the planned demilitarised zone must hand over their heavy weapons by October 10, and radical groups must withdraw by October 15.

Both the hard boy Hurras al-Deen and NLF rebels are present inside this planned buffer area, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.

But the dominant HTS alliance is also widely present, according to the Britannia-based monitor.

The jihadist-led group -- which controls more than half of the Idlib region -- has not officially responded to the agreement.

But its propaganda agency Ebaa has cast doubt on Turkey's motivations.

In August, HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani warned opposition factions in Idlib against handing over their weapons.

Syria's war has killed more than 360,000 people and displaced millions from their homes since erupting in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-Assad protests.

[PRESSTV] Iran has summoned UAE's charge d'affaires over "idiotic" remarks made by a senior Emirati official about a terrorist attack that left 25 people dead Saturday, Foreign Ministry front man Bahram Qassemi said on Sunday.

"Following idiotic remarks by an Emirati political adviser on the terrorist attack in Ahvaz, the United Arab Emirates' charge d'affaires was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the head of the relevant political office and the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran's strong protest at the irresponsible and insulting remarks was conveyed to him," Qassemi said.

"At the meeting, the Emirati charge d'affaires was warned that the blatant support for terrorist acts by an individual affiliated to the official Emirati agencies will bear responsibility for the UAE government, and indifference to it will not be acceptable," he added.

The summon came after Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, a political adviser to Emirati Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, said the attack in Ahvaz was justified and that "attacking a military target is not a terrorist act".

"Moving the battle deeper inside Iran is a declared option and will increase during the next phase," he added.

Iranian authorities also summoned ambassadors of the Netherlands and Denmark as well as chargé d'affaires of the British Embassy in Tehran after the shooting spree during a military parade.

Rouhani: Iran ready to confront US, 'small mercenary states'
[PRESSTV] President Hassan Rouhani says the United States wants to cause insecurity in Iran with the help of "small mercenary states" in the region, but that the Islamic Theocratic Republic is ready to confront them.

Rouhani's remarks in Tehran Sunday before leaving for New York to attend the UN General Assembly came a day after holy warriors attacked a military parade in Ahvaz in southwest Iran, killing 25 people.

"Americans want Iran to have no security. They want to create chaos and turmoil and set the conditions so that they can return to the country one day and take charge as they did in the old days, but none of these is possible," the president said.

"These are unattainable dreams and America will never achieve any of these goals," Rouhani added.

He touched on Washington's hostile policies toward Iran, including its withdrawal from an international nuclear deal with Tehran under "delusional excuses," putting a nation under strain.

"Our people will resist and the government has prepared itself for this confrontation," he said, adding that everyone will "join hands to put these difficult times behind us with the grace of God."

"The Americans will regret what they did because they made a very wrong choice", the president added.

The battle for credit: Islamic State affiliate releases video showing alleged Iran gunmen
[IsraelTimes] Assailants disguised as soldiers attacked annual military parade in city of Ahwaz, killing at least 29, including women and kiddies

A news agency affiliated with the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
released a video Sunday which purports to show the perpetrators of a shooting attack in a military parade in the Iranian city of Ahwaz which left at least 29 people dead, including women and kiddies, and maimed dozens more, some of them critically.

The footage, released by the Amak news agency, shows three men in a vehicle, apparently on their way to carry out the attack, Haaretz reported.

"We are Moslems, they are heretics," one of the men can be heard saying in the video. "We will kill them with a guerilla attack, inshallah."

Gunmen disguised as soldiers on Saturday attacked the annual Iranian military parade in the country’s oil-rich southwest, marking the anniversary of the start of its 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein’s Iraq.

The attack saw gunfire sprayed into a crowd of marching soldiers from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, bystanders, and government officials watching from a nearby riser.

Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi told the state news agency IRNA, "the Lions of Islam have undergone training in two countries in the Persian Gulf."

Shekarchi said the dead included a maiden of tender years and a former serviceman in a wheelchair.

"Of the four terrorists, three were sent to hell at the scene, while the fourth who had been maimed and locked away

went to hell moments ago due to his severe wounds," Shekarchi told state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
Khuzestan deputy governor Ali-Hossein Hosseinzadeh told the semi-official ISNA news agency that "eight to nine" troops were among those killed, as well as a journalist.

Iran points finger at Arab separatists, Gulf state for deadly attack
[DAWN] Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday pointed blame at Arab separatists for a deadly attack on a military parade and accused an unnamed United States-backed Gulf state of supporting them.

Tehran also summoned diplomats from Denmark, the Netherlands and Britannia for allegedly hosting members of the group suspected of links to Saturday's attack near the Iraqi border that left at least 29 people dead.

Four Lions of Islam attacked a parade commemorating the start of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war in the southwestern city of Ahvaz, capital of the border province of Khuzestan.

Officials and an eyewitness said the button men were clad in Iranian military uniforms and had sprayed the crowd with gunfire using weapons they had stashed in a nearby park.

(IS) group grabbed credit for the rare assault.

But from early on, Iranian officials saw an Arab separatist movement, the Ahwazi Democratic Popular Front (ADPF) or al-Ahwazi, as the main suspect.

"It is absolutely clear to us who has done this, which group it is and to whom they are affiliated," Rouhani said on state television

"Those who have caused this catastrophe ... were Saddam's mercenaries as long as he was alive and then changed masters," he said, referring to late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

"All these little mercenary countries we see in this region are backed by America. It is the Americans who incite them," he said.

UAE official denies Iranian allegations of links to military parade attackers

[Ynet] A senior United Arab Emirates official denied on Sunday Iranian allegations alluding to the involvement of the UAE in training troops that claimed the attack on a military parade in southwestern Iran.
