In the latest move, Tunisia recalled diplomats from Libya and urged expats to leave the embattled country.
"We have decided to cut consular services provided by our consular missions in Tripoli and Benghazi, and to provide only necessary and urgent services," the Tunisian Foreign Ministry said on July 16th.

The pact was signed on Wednesday in Brazzaville, the capital of the neighboring Republic of Congo.
"We will be signing the cessation of hostilities agreement this afternoon," said Colonel Youssouf Ben Moussa, a senior Seleka official, ahead of signing the truce.
"Our demand for the partition of the country has been dropped. That demand is obsolete now: What we have agreed to is the sharing of power."
The deal came after heavy pressure from regional mediators. It is not clear if the ceasefire will be respected by all the warring sides in the African country.
The African country descended into chaos last December, when Christian gangs launched coordinated attacks against the Seleka group that toppled the government in March 2013.

Security Council adopted a resolution giving the African Union ...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... and La Belle France the go-ahead to send troops to the country.
In March 2014, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos said almost all of more than 100,000 Moslems once residing in the capital Bangui had fled the violence perpetrated by Christian militiamen.

Teachers in British schools at the heart of the "Trojan Horse" plot set up a secret social networking group that called for the "eradication" of homosexuality and also claimed that the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby was staged. The teachers, at least two of whom are still in their positions, used an instant messaging service to post thousands of comments that demonstrated extreme "anti-Western, anti-American and anti-Israeli" views.
Transcripts from a WhatsApp group called the "Park View Brotherhood" revealed 3,000 messages posted by 55 teachers which include suggestions that the education system is "crooked" and needs more Islamic history. The teachers proposed using schoolchildren in political campaigns against the English Defence League and posted images of toilet rolls imprinted with the Israeli flag.
The group was set up and administered by Monzoor Hussain, the acting principal at Park View school. One of the biggest contributors was Razwan Faraz, the vice-principal at Nansen Primary School, who posted more than 400 messages.
In April 2013, the group circulated links to videos suggesting that the Boston marathon bombing was a hoax and that the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby by Islamists was staged as part of an "attack on Islam". One teacher suggested that the "masses are in a trance" for accepting that Drummer Rigby had been killed.
The group held an animated discussion about a Birmingham mosque which had been raising funds for the Help for Heroes charity. Faraz responds to the message by saying, "These Uncle Toms were bound to get exposed, even if it were by their own doing."
Faraz suggested that pupils should study Ibn Khaldun, a 14th-century Arab philosopher. He said, "Studying him will straighten the crooked and debased backs caused by this Eurocentric education system."
Speakers mentioned in the exchanges included one who reportedly advocated wife beating and another said to have called on God to "destroy the enemies of Islam".
Hussain claimed that the purpose of the group was to give "ideas for stories to say in [school] assemblies" and said he had deleted it a year ago. In fact, he changed the name to Park View News a year ago and only closed it down in March of this year.
The internet remembers all, something Lois Lerner and her crowd will also eventually be made aware of.

Do you suppose that we will ever learn about Benghazi and some made up story about a video, Fast and Furious (and other similar operations), the IRS and their targeting of conservative groups, why 5-high value detainees were released, why 911 plotters were treated as U.S. citizens with attendant legal rights, why the new Black Panther was not prosecuted for voter intimidation, whether or not Obama is really a citizen, why Occupation Wall Streeters were allowed free reign but the BLM came down hard on Clive Bundy for some supposedly endangered critter, why the administration lies so much, why Harry Reid is able to get away with so much and stay out of prison, and why this administration is at war with the American people. These are a few of the things I wonder about. There are many other recent things to wonder about. Abu Ghraib, secret interrogation locations, enhanced interrogation techniques--all that is so passe, so long ago--you know like the IRS scandal and Benghazi (sarc). What Obama means by the most transparent administration in history (which itself is not true), is spilling out the security secrets off the previous administration. Sillies, he never meant transparency in his administration.

My question is, do the insurers of the airlines think it's too dangerous? Airlines are run to make money, they carry insurance. While you can't reduce all the lives involved to dollars, I'd think Lloyd's of London or some such would have a pretty good grip on the safety issues.
Just sayin it sounds like somebody's providing a smoke screen here. The State Dept hasn't called for evacuations, which is good, because you would have to leave by boat.
It's an attempt to ratchet up pressure on Israel, being done by the US govt.

The FAA could not care less about insurance, and the aircraft owners/operators, as I understand it, are not financially harmed (and may actually come out ahead - except for reputation) by a downed a/c.
This is a purely political move from the offices of Jarrett and company.

Apparently, the suits at the Malaysian airlines were more concerned about fuel costs than insurance. IIRC there is an international accord that limits damages (unlike tobacco companies).

[The Nation (Pak)] A top American diplomat says the United States believes Pakistain's counterinsurgency operation in North Wazoo has pushed the bad boy Haqqani network out of the country's restive tribal region in the northwest.
U.S. Special Representative for Pakistain and Afghanistan James Dobbins said Tuesday the U.S. will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to those displaced by the offensive, VOA reported.
Dobbins visited Pakistain and Afghanistan this week to discuss political and security issues with leaders in both countries.
A day after meeting senior political and military leaders in Islamabad, he told news hounds in Kabul that talks revolved around the Mighty Pak Army's anti-militancy operation in Pakistain's North Waziristan tribal district.
"The operation in North Waziristan seems to be a quite a massive operation. The army has taken a number of casualties," said Dobbins. "It has inflicted an even larger number of casualties on both domestic and foreign Death Eaters in the area, including Afghans. It has seized huge amounts of ammunition of IED-precursor material and bomb-making facilities, particularly in Miranshah." ... headquarters of al-Qaeda in Pakistain and likely location of Ayman al-Zawahiri. The Haqqani network has established a ministate in centered on the town with courts, tax offices and lots of madrassas...
Haseeb Sediqi, front man for the National Directorate of security (NDS) told news hounds that the North Wazoo operation did not have any satisfactory outcome since the offensive did not harm any of the terrorist networks, said media reports.
Sediqi further added that one of the most important terrorist networks — Haqqani Network remained safe from the offensive as the network leaders were taken to safe locations along with several leaders from other terrorist networks.
He said NDS has received information which shows that the Haqqani Network leaders were shifted to Kurram agency, Quetta, Bloody Karachi ...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous... and even Islamabad.
According to Sediqi, the Haqqani Networks leaders, members and their equipments including weapons were taken to Kurram agency two weeks before the offensive was launched.
Sediqi said the Lashkar-e-Taiba ...the Army of the Pure, an Ahl-e-Hadith terror organization founded by Hafiz Saeed. LeT masquerades behind the Jamaat-ud-Dawa facade within Pakistain and periodically blows things up and kills people in India. Despite the fact that it is banned, always an interesting concept in Pakistain, the organization remains an blatant tool and perhaps an arm of the ISI... and other terrorist networks also remained during the operation.
Sediqi added that the deadly boom-mobileing in Orgun district of Paktika ...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo... province was one of the attacks carried out by Haqqani Network.

The first petition stated that Musharraf was facing severe security threats while the second maintained that he cannot travel due to sickness.

[An Nahar] Washington is still weighing Iraq's request to launch air strikes against Islamic hard boys, but is working to boost the Iraqi army as it battles the bully boys, a top U.S. diplomat said Wednesday.
After spending billions of dollars on building up and training the Iraq military, the United States was shocked when the Iraqi army melted away in face of a sweeping offensive in June by the jihadist Islamic State (IS) and allied Sunni groups.
But Deputy Assistant Secretary Brett McGurk told U.S. politicians that with increased U.S. support, including round-the-clock air surveillance in recent weeks, the Iraqi army was beginning to "hold the line" since the IS offensive captured a swath of northern Iraq, including the city of djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... The U.S. is now flying some 50 intelligence sorties a day over Iraq, and has set up joint operations command centers in both Baghdad and Arbil, meaning "we now have a much better picture which will inform eventual decisions" by President Barack Obama If you like your coverage you can keep it... , McGurk said.
Amid angry accusations that the U.S. administration had not done enough to support the embattled Iraqis, McGurk said Baghdad's request for direct air support was not made until May and "is still under active consideration."
The commanders in Mosul were all fired after the army's humiliating rout, and new "effective" commanders have been appointed, he said.
"There are very incompetent and incapable units with very poor leadership. There's no question we found those," McGurk, who has just returned from seven weeks in Iraq, told the House foreign affairs committee.
"But we have also found extremely capable, extremely proficient and extremely dedicated units and it's in our interest, I believe, to invest in those units. We should not write off what happened in Mosul and write off the entire security force overall."
Washington was focused on trying to help Iraq establish a new stable government following its April 30 elections amid "a clear recognition by Iraqis from all communities that substantial reforms must be undertaken and undertaken urgently."
This includes restructuring the security services around the idea of a five-pronged "functioning federalism" which is adapted to the "new realities on the ground."
The Iraqi army should be given responsibility for securing the country's borders, but rarely deploy inside cities, with local citizens taking the lead in securing local areas, perhaps modeled on the idea of a National Guard -- a job for which they would be paid and equipped.
There must also be closer cooperation between local, regional and national security services "to reduce operational space" for the hard boys.
And the new parliament must work to introduce on a series of reforms.

Within days, the Islamic State jihadist group and allied Sunni factions conquered Iraq's second city of djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... and large swathes of the north and west.
The front lines have since stabilized and Baghdad has already received intelligence assistance from Washington and Sukhoi warplanes from Russia and Iran.
Shiite militias with ties to Tehran have also joined the armed forces on the battlefield, in some cases even taking the lead.

He said U.S. officials had sought the urgent deployment of Kurdish peshmerga militia forces to eastern Mosul to stop the extremists' advance, but that the idea was blocked by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki's administration.
"The government of Baghdad did not share the same sense of urgency and did not approve the deployments," McGurk said. "Iraqi military commanders promised to send nine brigades of force to Mosul in response to our warnings and we stressed, however, that the forces would not arrive in time."
McGurk described the resulting events as "catastrophic." Yeah, I guess.

[IsraelTimes] Known for kidnapping, public stonings, lashings and executions, the Islamic State (IS) is now expanding into tourism, taking jihadists on honeymoon and civilians to visit other parts of its "caliphate." Oooh! Mom! Take me there! Running twice-weekly tours from Syria's Raqa to Iraq's Anbar, IS' buses fly the group's black flag and play jihadist songs throughout the journey.
One of the first clients was Chechen jihadist Abu Abdel Rahman al-Shishani, aged 26, who took his new Syrian wife on honeymoon, according to activist Hadi Salameh.
"Just after they got married, he took her to Anbar. These jihadists are very romantic," Salameh joked.
But the two weren't able to sit together, because "women sit in the back, and men at the front. The bus driver plays jihadist songs all through the ride, and the IS black flag flies over the bus."
IS proclaimed a "caliphate" last month straddling Iraq and Syria. According to a rebel from eastern Syria, the tours started operating immediately afterwards.
It firmly controls large swathes of northern and eastern Syria, the Iraq-Syria border, and parts of northern and western Iraq.
The group is responsible for a number of atrocities, including mass kidnappings and killings, stonings and crucifixions.
Salameh said the group's tour buses "start their journey in Tal Abyad (on Syria's Turkish border) and end in Iraq's Anbar. You can get off wherever you want, and you don't need a passport to cross the border."
The activist, who lives in Raqqa and uses a pseudonym to avoid retribution from IS, told AFP via the Internet the company is for profit.
"Of course it's not free. The price varies, depending on how far you go on the bus," Salameh said.
Armed escorts
Syrian rebel Abu Quteiba al-Okaidi, who is from the border province of Deir Ezzor, said most of those who use the buses are foreign jihadists.
"Most of them are foreigners. They communicate in English, and wear the Afghan-style clothing preferred by jihadists," Okaidi told AFP by telephone.
"There is a translator on the bus, who explains to them where they are going. The men on the bus are not armed, but vehicles carrying armed escorts accompany the bus," he added.
IS has its roots in Iraq, but spread into Syria in late spring last year. It gradually took over Raqqa city in northern Syria, and transformed it into its bastion.
In June, IS spearheaded a lightning offensive in Iraq that saw large swathes of the north and west of the country fall from Iraqi government hands.
Abu Ibrahim al-Raqawi, another activist living in Raqa city, said "tour buses run twice a week, on Wednesday and Sunday. It works like any bus company would, except that it treats areas under IS control in Iraq and Syria as one state."
He also said the bus company is "popular" among those with relatives in Iraq.
"Many people living in this area (northern Syria through western Iraq) have tribal ties stretching across the border. So they use these buses to visit their families," said Abu Ibrahim.
Speaking to AFP via the Internet, Abu Ibrahim also said others take the bus "to do business, while some just want to take a break from the shelling in Syria".
Syria's war began as a peaceful movement for democratic change, but was transformed into a war after Damascus unleashed a brutal crackdown on dissent. Many months into the fighting, jihadists began streaming into Syria.

[An Nahar] Thousands of Paleostinians have fled their homes but have nowhere safe to shelter from Israeli Arclight airstrikes, charity Oxfam said on Wednesday, warning supplies of water and food are dangerously low. On the other hand, the rocket supply seems to be okay.
Over 120,000 people are displaced but are prevented from escaping violence because borders with Israel and Egypt are shut, Oxfam said.
"The terrible toll on civilians is shocking. Hospitals and water supplies are under massive strain and the needs are increasing by the day. People are fleeing terrified," said Nishant Pandey, Oxfam's head in Occupied Paleostinian Territory and Israel.
Normally such crises would cause people to flee the area, but this was impossible as the blockade prevented people escaping the violence, Pandey said.
"Lasting peace and security for both sides means ending the blockade and the collective punishment of people in Gazoo."
The charity said water supplies were disrupted to over one million people, raw sewage was at risk of contaminating the water due to the destruction of sanitation plants, and only half of Gazoo's sewage plants are working.
Much of the area, a densely populated strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea, has electricity for four hours a day or less, Oxfam said.
The charity said it was trucking water supplies to 19,000 people sheltering in a mosque, a church, schools and Al Shifa hospital, but that Arclight airstrikes made it difficult to deliver aid, and that many of its staff had also had to leave their homes.

Qatar's recently attempted to transfer funds for the salaries of Hamas civil servants in Gaza, following the formation of a Palestinian unity government, but was blocked by the United States, which pressured the Arab Bank not to process them. But former national security adviser Maj. Gen. (res) Yaakov Amidror told The Times of Israel that the emirate's funding for the organization's terror apparatus, including tunnel diggers and rocket launchers, has continued unabated.
"Hamas currently has two 'true friends' in the world: Qatar and Turkey," Amidror said. The small Gulf state is currently Hamas's closest ally in the Arab world, after the movement's relations with Egypt soured following the ouster of Muslim Brotherhood president Mohammed Morsi in June 2013. Qatar, which has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in reconstruction and infrastructure projects in Gaza, is also home to the movement's political leader Khaled Mashaal in Doha.
"The one supporting this organization financially, almost alone, is Qatar," Amidror said.

For three deaces the Qatar royal family's (and Muslim Brotherhood-administered) Qatar Charitable Society of Doha has helped fund Mujahideen fighting in Afghanistan, the Balkans, Sudan, Syria, and Somalia. It has been especially generous in its quarter-century funding of Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Pentagon has thought itself oh-so-clever to have set up a major US military base in Qatar. In reality the ruling al-Thani family has worked against and made suckers of the US and the West.

Re comment #4: Qatar Airways flys out of several US cities, Philadelphia, DFW, Miami, to name a few. You can book with somebody else.
Also Qatar is the launch customer for the Airbus A350, so if you have a choice you can always select a flight based on equipment (hint: Boeing)
[JPOST] A new jihadi media outlet called Al-Fawaris released a video calling on Gazooks to endure the military operation, saying that victory looms and that Moslems all over the world support them.
According to a report published on Monday by the MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute) Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor, the video also features jihadi holy man Abu hareth Al-Maqdisi threatening Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, saying his demise is coming soon.
Sisi's killing of Moslems in Egypt is part of a Zionist-Crusader plot against the Gazooks, Maqdisi said.
"You won't sit for long in your position, because what happened to [former Egyptian president Hosni] Mubarak and [former Egyptian president Anwar] Sadat will happen to you as well," he said, in reference to Mubarak's stepping down from the presidency following protests in 2011 and to Sadat's liquidation in 1981.
Maqdisi, whose name attests to his Paleostinian origin, is currently in Syria.
"The general impression is that Al-Fawaris is close to the Islamic State, inter alia due to its use of the flag identified with the Islamic State, and due to the shared concept of shattering the Sykes-Picot boundaries that is advertised in the notice announcing the establishment of this media body," the report said.
"The Al-Fawaris Institute for Information Productions will focus on the affairs of the Moslems in al-Sham [Greater Syria], because al-Sham is not what the apostates delineated [in terms of its boundaries]. Al-Sham is as it was in ancient times⦠From the Euphrates in Iraq to El-Arish in Egypt," according to a post that appeared on Twitter with the establishment of the organization.
"Oh our brothers in Gazoo, know that you are fighting an enemy following Satan's path, whereas you are fighting in the way of [Allah] the merciful," Maqdisi said.
He added that he and his fighters want to join the fighting in Gazoo.
"True, we are fighting in Syria, but our heart yearns to arrive and fight the sons and brothers of the apes and pigs [the Jews]," MEMRI reported Maqdisi as saying The jihadi holy man said that Gazooks must be patient and wait for either victory or martyrdom, adding that Allah will soon send "extraordinary soldiers who will fight and defeat the Jews."
"The days of defeats have passed. Our concept today is offensive and therefore you must attack them [the Jews] so they won't attack you, hold on, fortify yourself and trust in Allah so you may succeed," Maqdisi said.

[NEWS.YAHOO] Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, said Wednesday that the suspension of international flights to and from Israel over security concerns about Gazoo rocket fire was a "great victory."
"The success of Hamas in closing Israeli airspace is a great victory for the resistance, and is the crown of Israel's failure," Hamas front manSami Abu Zuhri ...a senior spokesman for Hamas. Zuhri gained notoriety in 2006 when he dropped his money belt containing somewhere between 640,000 and 900,000 euros, which was confiscated by Paleostinian security and customs officials at a routine border crossing from Egypt to Gaza. The news brought competing Hamas and Fatah forces to the crossing checkpoint for an epic face-making and hollering contest... said in a statement.
A rocket fired from the embattled Paleostinian territory hit near Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport on Tuesday, prompting US and European airlines to suspend all flights to and from the Jewish state.
The flight ban was still in place on Wednesday, as Israel bombarded Gazoo for a 16th straight day in an operation to stop rocket fire and destroy tunnels constructed by Hamas, the main power in the territory.

[Ynet] The United Nations Human Rights Council agreed on Wednesday to launch an international inquiry into violations that may have been committed during Israel's latest military offensive in Gaza.
At the end of an emergency session, the 47-member Geneva state forum adopted a resolution presented by Palestinians by a vote of 29 states in favour, 1 against (the United States) with 17 abstentions (including some European Union members).
That's nice. Is it binding on the Security Council or, like so much the UN does, are they registering their feelings on the subject?
The United Nations Human Rights Council will launch an inquiry via an international committee into alleged war crimes committed by Israel in the most recent round of Gaza fighting - 22 member states voted in favour of the inquiry. Really?

[Ynet] The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday extended a ban on US airline flights to Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport by an additional 24 hours.
A statement from the US agency said the flight prohibition initially issued on Tuesday remains in effect as it evaluates conditions. The FAA had banned US flights to Tel Aviv in response to a rocket strike that landed near the airport.

[Ynet] Netvision customers hit by foreign hackers; Anonymous threatens 'day of solidarity and resistance' in cyber attacks on Friday.
Hackers from around the world,particularly in Arab states, have launched mutiple cyber attacks on Israeli websites, the Shin Bet says, in protest of the IDF's ongoing operation in Gazoo.
Customers of major Israeli internet provider Netvision reported experiencing connection problems on Tuesday evening, which proved to be part of a DDOS attack, in other words, a cyber attack that cuts off service from a supplier to its customers.
"The attempted attack was handled by the company by blocking the availability of websites from abroad," Netvision said Tuesday. "It seems that as a result, some customers have experienced sluggishness in receiving emails."
Tuesday's attack raised concerns regarding how such an event can be prevented in the future, but posed no legitimate security threat to Israel.
The Shin Bet said that the intention of the attack was to lead to the collapse of the Internet in Israel by creating an overload on the system. The Cyber Protection Division of the Shin Bet regularly works with media companies in Israel and private sources to work against such attacks.
Doron Ofek, an information security specialist from the Digital Rights movement, explained that Tuesday's attack raised concerns regarding how such an event can be prevented in the future, but posed no legitimate security threat to Israel.
"This action, if we translate it to the real world, is like an attempt to break into a store. If we compare the internet to a store, someone tried to break into the store and was unsuccessful. The same person then called to his friends from the neighborhood and together they filled all the routes to the store so that it couldn't function," said Ofek.
"No damage was caused to the store but all those people blocking the entrance with their bodies... only when they move from the entrance will it be able to function regularly."
Meanwhile, ...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter awoke groggily, his hand still stuck in the Ming vase... a second, possibly more crippling attack is apparently being planned by the infamous hacker group Anonymous, known for successfully hacking into heavily secured systems for political reasons.
A video announcement from the group appeared online over the last week in which Anonymous claimed that, "This Friday will be a day in where Israel will feel fear tingling in their servers, and homes. It will be a day of solidarity and resistance."
"We are calling upon the Anonymous collective, and the elite hacker groups to join our crusade, and to wage cyber war against the State of Israel," said the threatening message.

The generational divide opening up in radical Islamist ranks threatens to topple al Qaeda from its primacy in trans national militancy, a stunning loss of prestige for a group whose hijacked plane attacks killed nearly 3,000 people in New York's World Trade Center, Washington and Pennsylvania.
The Islamic State, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant ... the current version of al-Qaeda in Iraq, just as blood-thirsty and well-beloved as the original... (ISIL) until the June 29 declaration of the caliphate, has galvanized young followers by carving out swathes of territory in Iraq in a rapid advance last month.
US intelligence agencies estimate around 7,000 of the 23,000 violent forces of Evil operating in neighbouring Syria are imported muscle, mostly from Europe. Diplomats in the region say many of these foreigners are fighting for the Islamic State, which also deploys them Iraq.

Saudi dissident Saad al-Faqih told Rooters that the declaration of a caliphate was not as important for the Lion of Islams' prestige as the lightening military advance that preceded it, beginning with the capture of djinn-infested Mosul ... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn... on June 10.
"The declaration is a very loud noise, but not as effective as the success in conquering vast areas of Iraq," he said. "That conquest has had a huge psychological effect in the whole region."
No al Qaeda affiliate has officially endorsed the Islamic State, and scholars sympathetic to al Qaeda have denounced it, pointing to what they see as ISIL's willingness to use violence in turf disputes with al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria.
But their disapproval is cold comfort for al Qaeda. The caliphate, analysts say, was declared with potential recruits in mind, not to win kudos from leading scholars.
For many, ISIL's creation of a jihadi bastion spanning western Iraq and eastern Syria, and the slick online presence that publicises it, compare favourably with al Qaeda's failure for almost a decade to land a big attack in the West.
The contrast is not lost on Islamists such as Abdul Majeed al-Heetari, a Yemeni holy man who reproached al Qaeda in a message on his Twitter and Facebook pages on July 15.
