Afghanistan
Drone strike kills eight militants on Khyber Agency border
[DAWN] At least eight suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike in the Nazyan district of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province, on the zero line bordering Khyber Agency.

Intelligence sources said the drone targeted a militant compound in Cort Village of Nazyan, completely destroying the compound. Aside from the eight dead, scores of others were reportedly injured on the zero line, which has been serving as a safe haven for the Mullah Fazllullah led Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to security officials, militants based in the Nazyan district had planned the devastating attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, which left over 140 children and teachers dead and scores injured.

Soon after the attack in Peshawar, army chief General Raheel Sharif in an unscheduled visit to Kabul had been given assurances by the Afghan government as well as the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (Isaf) for action against a Kunar-based Taliban splinter group which is believed to have been behind the attack.

The strikes against militants have increased on both sides of the border since the attack.

Pakistani security forces have also been carrying out ground offensives in Khyber Agency, particularly the Tirah Valley of Bara which borders Nazyan.

A military operation titled 'Khyber One' which was launched in October by security forces and aimed at targeting militants in Khyber Agency’s Bara area is also underway in the northwestern tribal region.

Eighteen militants were killed in the ground offensive last night in Khyber Agency, while early Friday morning, an operation killed at least 50 terrorists in the Wurmagai and Spurkot areas of Tirah valley while they were moving towards Afghanistan. The militants fled leaving behind the dead bodies of their companions – photos of which have been circulating on social media.

Three security personnel were also injured in the gun battle.

Egypt Jails 40 Morsi Backers for Church Fires
[AnNahar] An Egyptian court sentenced 40 backers of ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi to up to 15 years in jail Thursday for violence including torching churches, a judicial source said.

Followers of Morsi have been the target of a relentless crackdown by the authorities since he was deposed in July 2013 by ex-army chief and now President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The criminal court in Assiut in southern Egypt sentenced two defendants to 15 years each, while the others were given jail terms ranging from one year to 10, the source said.

They were accused of taking part in acts of violence in Assiut last year during which five churches, several cop shoppes and a number of shops were set on fire. There were no reported casualties.

The court acquitted 61 others standing trial in the same case, the source said.

Violent festivities erupted across Egypt on August 14, 2013, as news spread across the country of a violent dispersal by the police and army of two protest camps in Cairo set up by Morsi supporters.

Dozens of churches and church properties were attacked across Egypt after the bloodshed, in response to perceived Coptic Christian support for Morsi's ouster.

The crackdown since then has left at least 1,400 people dead and more than 15,000 imprisoned.

The ex-president and many top leaders of his now-banned Moslem Brüderbund are themselves in jail and on trial in cases in which they face the death penalty if convicted.

Dozens of Morsi supporters have been sentenced to death after mass trials which the United Nations

Libya Dawn forces make “strategic retreat” a few kilometres back from Sidra
[Libya Herald] Libya Dawn
...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar...
troops, under the name Operation Sunrise, say they have have made "a strategic retreat" of a few kilometres to protect the oil facilities from being bombed by opposition forces.

"The troops reached Sirte and then carried on to Sidra where they reached the gates of the port, but they have now retreated two to three kilometres because they were concerned that the oil export terminal could be bombed," head of the Army Operations Room Mohammed Al-Ajtal said today. "They want to complete this operation peacefully, although if this fails, they are prepared to fight."

He said that the forces taking part in Operation Shorook (Sunrise) were authorised to free the oil ports and stand against any forces that tried to stop their mission.

With reference to Ibrahim Jadhran ‐ erstwhile federalist champion and a leader of the Petroleum Facilities Guard tasked with guarding Libya's oil installations ‐ he said: "Jadhran and his militias wanted to steal and smuggle oil and tried to sell it outside the authority of the National Oil Corporation (NOC). He might be with Hafter but both are criminals fighting against the legitimate authority."

The "legitimate authority" to which he referred was the Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
-based administration of Omar Al-Hassi and the General National Congress (GNC).

The next stages of the offensive would depend on the circumstances on the ground, Ajtal said. "We are waiting to sort out a peaceful method but we are ready for anything," he said, claiming that many Libya Dawn troops were now heading to Sidra to support Operation Sunrise.

of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed twin murders of secular politicians in 2013, in a video that has gone viral on social media sites on Thursday.

"Yes, tyrants, we're the ones who killed Chokri Belaid and Mohammed Brahmi," Abou Mouqatel, a Lion of Islam wanted by the authorities for their murders, said in the video in which he appeared with several others.

It was not clear where the video was filmed but Abou Mouqatel claimed they were in an area under the control of ISIS, which now controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq.

"We are going to come back and kill several of you. You will not have a quiet life until Tunisia implements Islamic law," added the Lion of Islam, whose real name is Abou Bakr al-Hakim.

It was not clear where the video was filmed but Abou Mouqatel claimed they were in an area under the control of ISIS, which now controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq.

The killing of Belaid triggered deadly protests and a political crisis that brought down Islamist prime minister Hamadi Jebali.

Islamist call for Algerian author's death stirs outrage
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] An Islamist call for author Kamel Daoud to be condemned to death for alleged apostasy has stirred outrage in Algeria, reviving dark memories of the country's brutal civil war.

Salafist activist Abdelfatah Hamadache Ziraoui has called on his Facebook page for authorities to impose the death penalty against the author and to execute him in public.

The call came after Daoud, in an appearance on French television, criticized the relationship between Moslems and their religion.

Ziraoui, who campaigns for bans on alcohol and bathing costumes on the beach, accused the author of apostasy for "waging war on Allah, his prophet, the Koran and the values sacred to Islam."

Contacted by AFP, the author and journalist said he has filed a lawsuit in the western city of Oran against what he termed a death threat.

The case has stirred outrage on social media, with a petition calling for Algerian authorities to take action against "such murder calls which bring back the worst days" of the country's Islamist insurgency of the 1990s when dozens of intellectuals were assassinated.

54 Nigerian Soldiers Sentenced to Death for Mutiny
[AnNahar] A Nigerian military court on Wednesday sentenced 54 soldiers to death for mutiny after they refused to deploy for an operation against Boko Haram

Islamists in the northeast, their lawyer said.

"They sentenced 54 to death and acquitted five," said prominent human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
lawyer Femi Falana, following a court martial that began on October 15 and was conducted behind closed doors.

Reporters were turned away from the court before the tribunal gave its verdict and military officials were not available for comment afterwards.

In a similar case in September, 12 soldiers were sentenced to death for mutiny after firing on their commanding officer in the northeast city of Maiduguri, where troops are battling against Boko Haram.

Both sentences are subject to approval by top army brass, but there has so far been no indication that senior officers oppose the rulings.

- Lack of weapons -
Frontline troops have consistently complained that they lack the weapons and other supplies needed to face Boko Haram in holy warrior strongholds.

The Islamists, waging a five-year uprising to create a caliphate in northern Nigeria, are known to have tanks, rocket propelled grenade launchers and other heavy weaponry, while troops have reported lacking ammunition for basic assault rifles.

After Boko Haram captured a series of towns in the northeast earlier this year, the military vowed to retake all lost territory.

The 7 Division, based in Maiduguri, was tasked with leading the offensive but there are numerous reports of troops refusing to deploy.

Wives of soldiers have staged protests outside a military base, trying to stop their husbands from heading to conflict areas without proper equipment.

Soldiers have also carried out similar demonstrations, including one group that set up a protest camp on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

The men sentenced to death on Wednesday were part of the special forces division ordered in August to retake three lost towns in restive Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital.

Defence officials insist that troops are properly equipped, but President Goodluck Jonathan

earlier this year sought permission from politicians to secure a $1 billion foreign loan to upgrade the military.

The request was seen as a tacit acknowledgement from Jonathan that Nigeria's soldiers were being out-matched.

Boko Haram, blamed for more than 13,000 deaths since 2009, is believed to control more than two dozen towns and villages in the northeast.

While the military has claimed a series of victories in recent weeks, large swathes of territory remain in rebel hands.

Dead, Wounded in Car Bomb Attacks on Yemen Shiite Militia
[AnNahar] Twin car kabooms in Yemen's western port city of Hodeida targeting Shiite turbans left dozens of people dead and maimed on Thursday, a security official said.

"The two kabooms were the result of two boom-mobiles and left dozens dead and maimed," the official told AFP, without providing any precise figures.

The first bomb detonated close to the Hodeida headquarters of the Shiite militia known as Ansarullah which seized the town at the end of September, said the official.

The other bomb went off close to another position of the Shiite militia west of Hodeida University, not far from the site of the first attack.

Thursday's attacks came two days after 15 schoolgirls were among 25 people killed in a car kaboom targeting a Shiite militia leader in the central town of Rada.

Yemen has been rocked by instability since the Shiite fighters, who are also known as Huthis, seized control of the capital Sanaa on September 21.

The Huthis have since expanded their presence in central and western Yemen, including Hodeida, but have been met by fierce resistance from Sunni tribes and Al-Qaeda turbans.

Australian Police Conduct Counter-Terrorism Raids across Sydney
[AnNahar] Australian police late Thursday searched several properties across Sydney, reportedly as part of a ongoing counter-terrorism investigation but not related to the deadly cafe siege earlier this week, officials said.

New South Wales police said the raids were unconnected to the 16-hour standoff at a Sydney cafe on Monday that left the lone gunman, self-styled Islamic holy man Man Haron Monis, and two hostages dead, but would not provide further details about the operation.

"The (Australian Federal Police) and New South Wales police can confirm that they are conducting search warrants today in Sydney as part of an ongoing operation," a spokeswoman told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"As this activity remains ongoing and to ensure the safety and security of the operation and members involved, it is not appropriate to provide further details at this time."

The spokeswoman could also not confirm local media reports that one of the homes raided had also been searched by police during large-scale counter-terrorism raids across the country in September.

Australia raised its terror threat level in September on growing concern about forces of Evil returning from fighting in Iraq and Syria.

On Monday, a 25-year-old man was enjugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
as part of ongoing investigations into plans for an attack on Australian soil, the federal police said.

A 22-year-old already facing a charge of preparing for a terrorist act was also charged with funding terrorism.

"Police will allege that men were key controllers in the movement of funds that paid for Australians to travel to the Middle East to fight with the proscribed terrorist organization, Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
," federal police said in a statement Monday.

"Police allege the men made available to a terrorist organization approximately Aus$15,000 (US$12,300) in funds in August this year."

The 22-year-old will face a Sydney court Friday.

More than 70 Australians are currently fighting for Islamic forces of Evil in Iraq and Syria. At least 20 have died and there are growing concerns that increasing numbers of youths are being radicalised and could mount attacks at home.

Canberra recently passed a law criminalising travel to terror hotspots without good reason, fearful that nationals will pose a threat when they return. Those charged could face up to 10 years in jail.

Europe
One of the Austrian girls who joined IS dead
A UN official says one of two Austrian girls who fled their middle class homes in Vienna to fight in Syria has definitely died in the conflict. The two girls, Samra Kesinovic, 17, and 15-year-old Sabina Selimovic, whose parents are Bosnian refugees, disappeared in April after saying that they wanted to fight in Syria.

They first went to Ankara by plane, and then on into the southern Turkish region of Adana. For a while, no one heard from them. But they appeared on social media brandishing Kalashnikov rifles and surrounded by armed men - photos which police said acted as recruitment posters for young girls.

David Scharia, a senior Israeli expert of the UN Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTED) said, "We received information just recently about two 15-year-old girls, of Bosnian origin, who left Austria, where they had been living in recent years; and everyone, the families and the intelligence services of the two countries, is looking for them. Both were recruited by Islamic State. One was killed in the fighting in Syria, the other has disappeared."

The confirmation comes three months after Austria's government said it had informed the parents of the girls that one of them might have been killed.

An Islamic cleric from Bosnia living in Vienna, Mirsad O., known by the Islamic name of 'Ebu Tejma', was alleged to be responsible for the radicalization of the two young girls. Authorities say he brainwashed them into joining the jihad. He denies it.

Mirsad O. was arrested for his role in an alleged terrorist funding network based in Austria in November.

It is believed both Samra and Sabina married IS jihadis soon after arriving in Syria. The two couples initially lived in the same room but the 15-year-old has reportedly now moved out to a different apartment.

Speaking by text messages to French weekly Paris Match, Sabina denied reports she was pregnant and insisted she was enjoying life in Syria, where she felt free to practice Islam in a way that she did not in Austria. The magazine did manage to confirm she had only been allowed to speak to them with the permission of her husband, who was in the room when she wrote her answers.

She said after arriving in Turkey they crossed into Syria on foot. They ended up in the city of Raqqa, arriving with nothing other than the clothes they were wearing. Sabina said her husband was a soldier and proclaimed, "Here I can really be free. I can practice my religion. I couldn't do that in Vienna."

#1  I'm sure she couldn't practice her religion freely in Vienna where there is no stoning, beheading or genital mutilation allowed ... except by really strange people that wear a lot of leather or dress up as stuffed animals. Regardless, now she can fully exercise all the aspects of her religion that are approved by her master husband.

Spain Holds Four Accused of Recruiting Women Islamist Militants
[AnNahar] A judge in Spain on Thursday remanded in jug four suspects for allegedly recruiting women online for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
jihadist group, a judicial source said.

A fifth suspect, a minor, was in detention in a juvenile center pending further proceedings, the source told AFP.

Spanish and Moroccan authorities said the suspects were believed to have enlisted 12 people who were then sent to IS-run territories in Syria and Iraq.

Judge Santiago Pedraz at the National Court in Madrid "ordered unconditional detention for membership in a terrorist organization" for the four adults, the source added.

The five were taken into custody on Tuesday in a series of raids against a suspected recruiting cell that police say contacted women online and radicalized them.

Authorities tossed in the calaboose
Keep yer hands where we can see 'em, if yez please!
the suspects in Barcelona as well as in Ceuta and Melilla, two Spanish territories bordering Morocco. Two other suspects were taken into custody in Morocco near the border with Ceuta.

According to the source, one of the suspects refused to answer the judge's questions while the three others responded.

The Moroccan government said the suspects had links to members of the IS group planning attacks in Morocco.

Ten years after the March 2004 Al-Qaeda-inspired bombings killed 191 people in Madrid, police and security analysts say homegrown jihadists, already familiar in Britannia and La Belle France, have started to appear in Spain.

Security sources say up to 100 Death Eaters have been sent to Iraq and Syria after being recruited in Spain. Hundreds of others are said to have joined IS from other European countries such as Britannia and La Belle France.

In August police detained two females -- a 19-year-old from Melilla and a girl of 14 from Ceuta -- who tried to cross from Melilla into Morocco, suspected of heading for Syria.

The 14-year-old is also in detention in a juvenile center.

Danish warrant for Syria militant who posed with severed heads
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Danish police Thursday issued an arrest warrant in absentia for a Danish fighter in Syria who posed with severed heads and said another Dane who travelled to Syria had been held.

Copenhagen police said the warrant for the 26-year-old man was issued for condoning acts of terrorism after he posted some photographs on Facebook.

The pictures showed the man "standing in front of some severed heads, and ... wearing a shoulder strap with the Arabic text for the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
[of Iraq and Syria ISIS]," a police statement said.

"The pictures appear to be taken in the city of Raqqa in Syria, which is an area controlled by ISIS, where the accused is presumed to have stayed in July 2014 when the pictures were published on his Facebook profile," it said.

The man also uploaded two pictures of ISIS leader His Supreme Immensity, Caliph of the Faithful and Galactic Overlord, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
, one of which carried the caption: "I sacrifice myself for you."

"It's not a question of mere expressions of sympathy for terrorist organizations but of approval of actual terrorist acts," chief prosecutor Dorit Borgaard said.

An international arrest warrant would also be issued for the man, who according to tabloid Ekstra-Bladet went missing on Sept. 2 last year.

In the pictures he posed in front of a fence "pointing at severed heads attached to spears, as headless bodies hang from the fence. Several pictures give the impression of fresh blood," the newspaper wrote.

Danish police also said a 21-year-old man from Alleroed, around 30 kilometers northwest of Copenhagen, had been incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
on Wednesday on suspicion of spreading "extremist video material" on the Internet.

The man "departed in 2013 for Syria, and has since his return to Denmark been in the police spotlight," the regional police said in a separate statement.

The Grand Turk
Turkey Media Bosses to Be Charged with 'Terror Group Membership'
[AnNahar] Two anti-government Turkish media chiefs incarcerated
Please don't kill me!
during controversial weekend raids that have strained ties with the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
are to be charged with membership of a terrorist group, reports said Thursday.
ISIS? Al Nusra? Hamas? All unthinkable. Friends of Israel, perhaps.
Ekrem Dumanli, the editor-in-chief of the Zaman daily newspaper and Hidayet Karaca, the head of Samanyolu TV (STV), were being interrogated by Istanbul judges to decide whether to remand them in jug ahead of trial.

Early morning raids on Sunday resulted in the arrest of 30 journalists, scriptwriters and police who are deemed loyalists of the exiled holy man Fethullah Gulen, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him...
's number one foe.

Erdogan accuses Gulen, who lives in exile in the United States, of seeking to run a "parallel state" and of being the source of sensational corruption allegations that broke a year ago on December 17.

Zaman, Turkey's biggest-selling daily, and Samanyolu, which produces some hugely popular TV dramas, are both closely linked to Gulen.

Of the 30 arrested, prosecutors have asked for 16 to be charged with the other 14 now freed. Of the 16, prosecutors want 12 to be remanded in jug and four released on bail.

The 16, including Dumanli and Karaca, are being charged with "becoming a member of an armed terrorist organization", the official Anatolia news agency reported, without specifying which group.

They are also being charged with "using intimidation, threats and deception to deprive individuals of their liberty, as well as slander," it added.

The charges are set to be officially confirmed later in the day.

Dumanli had earlier been filmed raising his arms in defiance as he was led in by plain clothes officers to a hospital for a check-up.

According to the Dogan news agency, Karaca refused to answer the judge's questions in the hearing, complaining that he was not impartial.

The European Union has condemned the arrests as going "against the European values" but Erdogan has struck back, telling the bloc to "mind their own business" in a row that risks permanently damaging relations.

The charging of Dumanli and Karaca had been flagged in advance by a mystery Twitter user named Fuat Avni who had also warned of the impending raids days before they took place.

The identity of the micro-blogger is unknown, with some speculating that the person could be a renegade member of Erdogan's inner circle.

India-Pakistan
Mumbai attack 'mastermind' Lakhvi detained under MPO
[DAWN] Alleged criminal mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi who was granted bail by an anti-terrorism court in Islamabad yesterday has been detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail.

A senior government source told Dawn that the government has also decided to appeal against the approval of Lakhvi's bail in superior courts.

The ATC had ordered the release of Lakhvi after his post-arrest bail plea was accepted and Judge Syed Kausar Abbas Zaidi had set Lakhvi's bail at Rs1 million. The decision drew a sharp reaction from India and surprised many with its unfortunate timing, coming just days after one of the deadliest terror attacks the country has ever seen.

Lakhvi is among the seven persons charged with planning and helping carry out the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The six other men facing trial in Adiala Jail for their alleged involvement in Mumbai attacks are Hammad Amin Sadiq, Shahid Jamil Riaz, Younas Anjum, Jamil Ahmed, Mazhar Iqbal and Abdul Majid.

At the time of the attacks, Lakhvi was believed to be the operational head of the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba (LT) that has been accused by India of carrying out the attacks in India's financial capital.

Lakhvi along with Zarar Shah was allegedly the key planner of the attack that killed 166 people.

The acceptance of his bail plea had come as Pakistain was mourning the deaths of school children and other victims of Tuesday's Taliban massacre and New Delhi had made a visible effort to show solidarity with Islamabad.

The massacre and the reaction to it was followed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

Umar Mansoor mastermind of Peshawar atrocity: TTP
[DAWN] The most hated man in the country is a 36-year-old father of three and volleyball enthusiast nicknamed "Slim".

His real name is Umar Mansoor and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) say he criminal masterminded this week's massacre of 132 children and nine staff at a school in Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, the deadliest Lion of Islam attack in Pakistain's history.

A video posted on Thursday on a website used by the Taliban shows a man with a luxuriant chest-length beard, holding an admonishing finger aloft as he seeks to justify the Dec. 16 attack. The caption identified him as Umar Mansoor.

"If our women and kiddies die as deaders, your children will not escape," he said. "We will fight against you in such a style that you attack us and we will take Dire Revenge on innocents."

The Taliban say the attack, in which gunnies wearing suicide-bomb vests executed children, was retaliation for a military offensive carried out by the Mighty Pak Army. They accuse the military of carrying out extrajudicial killings.

The accusation is not new. Many courts have heard cases where men disappeared from the custody of security services. Some bodies have been found later, hands bound behind the back and shot in the head, or dismembered and stuffed into sacks.

Some security officials say privately the courts are so corrupt and afraid, it is almost impossible to convict Lion of Islams.

"You risk your life to catch turbans and the courts always release them," said one official. "If you kill them then they don't come back."

The country is so inured to violence that the discovery of such bodies barely rates a paragraph in a local newspaper.

Despite this, the school attack shocked a nation where traditionally, women and kiddies are protected, even in war.

Six Pak Taliban interviewed by Rooters confirmed the criminal mastermind was Mansoor. Four of them said he is close to Mullah Fazlullah
...son-in-law of holy man Sufi Mohammad. Known as Mullah FM, Fazlullah had the habit of grabbing his FM mike when the mood struck him and bellowing forth sermons. Sufi suckered the Pak govt into imposing Shariah on the Swat Valley and then stepped aside whilst Fazlullah and his Talibs imposed a reign of terror on the populace like they hadn't seen before, at least not for a thousand years or so. For some reason the Pak intel services were never able to locate his transmitter, much less bomb it. After ruling the place like a conquered province for a year or so, Fazlullah's Talibs began gobbling up more territory as they pushed toward Islamabad, at which point as a matter of self-preservation the Mighty Pak Army threw them out and chased them into Afghanistan...
, the embattled leader of the fractious group who ordered assassins to kill schoolgirl activist Malala Yousafzai
...a Pashtun blogger and advocate for girls' education from Mingora, in Swat. She started blogging at age 11-12. She was 15 when a Talib boarded her school bus and shot her in the head in 2012. She was evacuated to a hospital in Britain and the Pak Taliban vowed to kill her and her father. Among other awards, she received the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, which she deserved more than Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Yasser Arafat, or Rigoberta Menchu...
.

"He strictly follows the principles of jihad," one said. "He is strict in principles, but very kind to his juniors. He is popular among the juniors because of his bravery and boldness."

Mansoor got a high school education in the capital, Islamabad, two Taliban members said, and later studied in a madrassa, a religious school.

"Umar Mansoor had a tough mind from a very young age, he was always in fights with other boys," said one Taliban member.

The Taliban video describes him as the "amir", or leader, of Peshawar and nearby Darra Adam Khel. Mansoor deeply opposes talks with the government, the commanders said.
Mansoor has two brothers and spent some time working in the city of Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
as a labourer before joining the Taliban soon after it was formed, in late 2007, said one commander.

His nickname is "nary," a word in the Pashto language meaning "slim", and he is the father of two daughters and a son, said another commanders.

"(Mansoor) likes to play volleyball," said one of the Taliban members. "He is a good volleyball player. Wherever he shifts his office, he puts a volleyball net up."

The Taliban video describes him as the "amir", or leader, of Peshawar and nearby Darra Adam Khel. Mansoor deeply opposes talks with the government, the commanders said.

"He was very strict from the start when he joined," a commander said. "He left many commanders behind if they had a soft corner (of their heart) for the government."

In addition to post-Peshawar retaliatory air + ground milstrikes by the Pak Mil, Islamabad is being demanded to publicly hang several hundred Militants currently held in Pak prisons as an overt response to the Taliban attack on the Peshawar army school.

by police today. Protesters and supporters took to social media and launched the Twitter hashtags #LalMasjidVigil and #ArrestAbdulAziz to express their outrage.

The candlelight vigil and protest was organised in response to a statement by the mosque's chief holy man Maulana Abdul Aziz in which he refused to condemn the massacre of students and teachers in a terrorist attack on a school in Peshawar.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Asmatullah Junejo summoned the entire district police in response to an announcement by civil society activists that protests would be held outside the mosque after Friday prayers.

Police have beefed up security outside the Lal Masjid and have set up barricades on both sides of the roads leading to the seminary.

Earlier on Thursday, a large number of civil society activists, politicians and students arrived at the mosque, chanting slogans against the chief holy man and lighting candles as part of a vigil.

The candlelight vigil and protest was organised in response to a statement by the mosque's chief holy man Maulana Abdul Aziz in which he refused to condemn the massacre of students and teachers in a terrorist attack on a school in Peshawar.

Jibran Nasir, one of the organisers of the protest, told Dawn on Thursday that he was a resident of Karachi and was in Islamabad when he heard of the statement made by Maulana Abdul Aziz and decided to organise the candlelight vigil in response.

Islamabad police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against participants of the protest on the complaint of the mosque management.

Dr Usman, Arshad Mehmood executed in Faisalabad
[DAWN] Aqeel alias Dr Usman and Arshad Mehmood have been executed in Faisalabad on Friday night, in the first capital punishment carried out in the country since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted the moratorium on the death penalty, sources said.

Usman a former soldier of the army’s medical corps, was executed in relation to an attack on the headquarters of the Pakistan Army in 2009 in Rawalpindi. Arshad Mehmood, was executed for an assassination attempt on former military ruler, General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf.

Security had been tightened at Faisalabad's central and district prisons ahead of the executions.

The black warrant for Dr Usman was signed by Army Chief General Raheel Sharif late on Thursday night.

The prime minister had lifted the moratorium a day after terrorists attacked Peshawar's Army Public School, killing 141 people, most of them children.

Eleven soldiers had lost their lives in the Oct 10, 2009 attack when 10 heavily armed militants wearing suicide vests stormed the army's General Headquarter (GHQ) holding off commandos for hours.

Dr Usman, who was caught injured during the Oct 10 raid on the army headquarters by militants, was sentenced to death in 2011 by a military court which had awarded prison terms to others in the GHQ attack case.

A retired soldier, Imran Siddiq, was awarded life imprisonment in the case at the time whereas three civilians — Khaliqur Rehman, Mohammad Usman and Wajid Mehmood — were given life terms while two others, Mohammad Adnan and Tahir Shafiq (both civilians), were given eight and seven years jail sentence respectively.

Apart from Dr Usman, who was caught during the attack, other serviceman and five civilians were found guilty of abetment.

Their trial by the military court, which was headed by a brigadier, had lasted over five months and had taken place at an undisclosed location.

Mehmood, who was a trooper, was among the five sentenced to be hanged for their role in an Al Qaeda-inspired assassination attempt on Musharraf’s life in late 2003.

Musharraf, who was in power at the time, narrowly escaped the bid when two suicide car bombers rammed his motorcade on Dec 25, 2003, in Rawalpindi. Fifteen people were killed in that attack.

It was the second attempt on Musharraf’s life that month, and several soldiers, air force personnel and militants were arrested after the two attacks.

Mehmood and civilians Zubair Ahmed, Rashid Bhatti, Rashid Qureshi, Ghulam Sarwar and Akhlaque Ahmed were convicted in the case.

American forces were involved in their first ground battle with Islamic State fighters, according to Kurdish media outlet Shafaq News, near the Ain Al-Assad base in the Anbar province of Iraq early Sunday. The report could not be independently verified.

US forces allegedly came to the aid of tribal fighters and the Iraqi Army battling Islamic State (also known as ISIS or ISIL) militants in the Al-Dolab area, 10 km (6.2 miles) from the Ain Al-Assad base, which is about 90 km (56 miles) west of Anbar’s capital, Ramadi.

"US forces intervened because … ISIS started to come near the base, which they are stationed in so out of self-defense, they responded,” said Sheikh Mahmud Nimrawi, a tribal leader in the area, according to Shafaq. The base hosts about 100 US military advisers, the report claimed.

An Iraqi Army field commander in Anbar said that "the US force equipped with light and medium weapons, supported by fighter force model F-18" was able to hit Islamic State targets, forcing them to retreat from Al-Dolab.

The clash with Islamic forces lasted for more than two hours, as American jets also hit several Islamic State fighters, according to Colonel Salam Nazim.

"We have made progress in Al-Dolab area, in which ISIS has withdrawn from to the villages beyond, after the battles which involved a private American force” that surprised Islamic State fighters, tribal leader Sheikh Mahmud Nimrawi said. The American forces returned to Ain Al-Assad base after the mission, according to Nimrawi, who added that the "US promised to provide tribal fighters who are in that region exclusively with weapons.”

The Pentagon has not released information on any American involvement in ground fighting with Islamic State.

Kurds Press Northern Iraq Offensive against Jihadists
[AnNahar] Kurdish forces backed by foreign jets pressed an ambitious operation against the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. group in northern Iraq on Thursday, taking on the jihadists in the heart of their "caliphate".

After mass bombing by aircraft of the U.S.-led coalition paved the way for ground troops Wednesday, Iraq's Kurdish peshmerga retook several villages and closed in on the Sinjar area.

The anti-IS war's top commander, U.S. Lieutenant General James Terry, said Thursday that 50 air strikes had allowed the Kurds to "regain approximately 100 square kilometers of ground".

put forward for launching the air war against the jihadists.

Fresh strikes were conducted on Thursday north of Tall Afar, one of the first areas to fall to IS fighters in early June, said Anwar Brahim, a senior officer with the Kurds' intelligence services.

"At around 7:00 am (0400 GMT), there were coalition strikes on Nahyat al-Ayadhiya," Brahim told AFP. "A large deployment of peshmerga is ready to close in on Sinjar."

An AFP news hound saw the mangled bodies of IS fighters killed by the air strikes and which peshmerga fighters covered with sand to reduce the stench.

Kurdish forces used heavy artillery to pound IS positions in the area but officials said the fighting was less intense than on Wednesday.

In Hanakeh, one of the villages the peshmerga took back, one bridge had been blown up and another still had four barrels filled with TNT on it, suggesting the jihadists had to flee before they had time to destroy it.

The U.S. military command supervising the coalition air campaign said Wednesday that 61 air strikes had been carried out in Iraq since Monday.

That was some of the heaviest bombardment since the jihadist onslaught on the Sinjar area and towards Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region prompted the first U.S. air raids four months ago.

The peshmerga said they recaptured eight villages and killed about 80 IS fighters in the initial phase of the offensive launched from Rabia on the Syria border and Zumar on the shores of djinn-infested Mosul

dam lake.

The peshmerga lost seven men on Wednesday in Qasreej village when they failed to stop a suicide kaboomer who rammed an explosives-laden armored vehicle into their convoy, officers told AFP on the scene.

Sinjar, between the Syria border and Iraq's IS-held second city Mosul, is one of the main goals of the offensive.

The operation aims to disrupt IS supply lines and further isolate Mosul, around which the jihadists have been building berms and trenches in recent weeks.

IS has also cut the mobile phone network in the city and imposed tougher restrictions on the population's movements, sparking accusations they are seeking to use civilians as human shields in the event of an attack.

The jihadists have suffered a string of recent setbacks in Iraq, but the front lines have been more static in Syria.

The 60-nation U.S.-led coalition against IS, which also carried out five air strikes in Syria this week, is not cooperating with the Syrian regime.

The administrations in Baghdad and in autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan, however, have received strong support from Western governments, in the form of weapons, aid and thousands of military advisers.

Kurdish leaders said one of the objectives of Wednesday's offensive was to "break the siege on Mount Sinjar", which was the scene in August of one of the conflict's most dramatic episodes.

IS killed hundreds of residents, kidnapped and enslaved hundreds of Yazidi women and girls, and forced tens of thousands to seek refuge on Mount Sinjar.

Civilians remained besieged there for days in the searing summer heat with little to eat or drink before a breach in the siege allowed them to flee.

Yazidi fighting units that were formed in the wake of the August attack have struggled to control land in the Sinjar area and retreated to the mountain in September.

A few thousand people are still atop Mount Sinjar in what Yazidi leaders have called a "second siege".

Some are residents of the mountain but most are fighters, from various regional Kurdish groups or recently-formed Yazidi militias.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli military says Gaza rocket hits Israel
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] The Israeli military says a rocket fired from the Gazoo Strip struck southern Israel in the first such attack since September.

The military says air raid sirens were sounded Friday in the Eshkol region bordering the Paleostinian territory. Security forces are searching the area to determine where the rocket landed.

In September a rocket landed on the border fence.

Israel fought a 50-day war this summer with Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, the Paleostinian hard boy group that controls Gazoo. Hamas launched thousands of rockets and mortars toward Israel, which carried out an aerial campaign and a ground invasion.

The Gazoo war left more than 2,100 Paleostinians dead, according to Paleostinian and U.N. officials. On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six non-combatants were killed.

Salafist group claims responsibility for bombing French center in Gaza
[Ynet] In unverified video, Jund Ansar Allah take credit for damaging French Cultural Center in the Strip.

A small Islamic Lion of Islam group grabbed credit Thursday for a kaboom that damaged the French Cultural Center in Gazoo City last week without causing any casualties.

Jund Ansar Allah is one of five groups in the Gazoo Strip that subscribe to the Salafist version of Sunni Islam, an ultra-conservative strain of the religion.

A five-minute video posted online that could not be verified showed images of attacks on the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group by what it called Crusaders, or Westerners, and showed images of the bomb it said was used in Friday's attack.

A commentary said "may God help... whoever manages to kill an American or a European from states participating in the coalition against the Islamic State, particularly the French who are full of hatred."

A source connected with the center said Friday that one or two blasts had damaged the south wall of the compound as well as some of the facade of the building, which also houses a French consular office.

On October 8, the center's offices were set ablaze after the apparent kaboom of two faulty fuel tanks. Police at the time suggested the kaboom may have been a criminal act, but the results of their investigation were never released.

French diplomatic missions and official buildings have been on high alert since the start of a spate of kidnappings and beheadings of foreigners by Islamic State jihadists and their allies, particularly that of Frenchie Herve Gourdel in Algeria.

La Belle France has angered the radical Islamist group by taking part in air strikes on the group's forces in Iraq.

Communist rebels reject Aquino's unilateral ceasefire
Communist militants in the say they will attack Philippine military forces conducting peace and development operations despite President Aquino's unilateral order for the suspension of military and police operations (SOMO) against the New People's Army.

In press statement, Jorge Madlos, also known as Ka Oris, said, "We wish to point out and clarify that the NDFP-Mindanao considers the COPD and other similar military operations as part of the offensive military operations of Philippine Army units, and are, therefore, legitimate military targets of the New People’s Army (NPA)"

Ka Oris is Mindanao's spokesman for the National Democratic Front (NDF), the political umbrella of the NPA and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) which is marking its 46th anniversary on December 26.

Madlos was reacting to a 4th Infantry Division spokesperson who allegedly said community organizing for peace and development (COPD) operations will continue in the countryside during the month-long holiday ceasefire.

Aquino on Wednesday ordered a unilateral ceasefire that will last from December 18 until January 19, after Pope Francis leaves the country following a 4-day official visit.

Meanwhile, the CPP announced a limited ceasefire which will cover from 12:01 am of December 24, 2014 to 11:59 pm of December 26, 2014; 12:01 am of December 31, 2014 to 11:59 pm of January 1, 2015; and 12:01 am of January 15, 2015 to 11:59 pm of January 19, 2015.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Report: Detained Abdullah Azzam Militant was Involved in Shatah's Assassination
[AnNahar] A senior bully boy recently detained by the Lebanese army was involved in the liquidation of Minister Mohammed Shatah, the transfer of jacket wallahs who killed dozens of people, in addition to several other terror offenses, media reports said on Thursday.

?Mahmoud Ahmed Abu Abbas was placed in durance vile
Please don't kill me!
in (the Bekaa town of) Majdal Anjar before being immediately transferred to the defense ministry building,? al-Mayadeen television reported.

It said he was involved in the 2013 liquidation of Minister Mohammed Shatah in a central Beirut boom-mobileing.

Military sources informed on the investigations told al-Mayadeen that ?the car used in Shatah's liquidation came from the Ein el-Hellhole camp,? noting that Abdullah Azzam Brigades
... Leb's current al-Qaeda affiliate, named after a guy whose car the current head of al-Qaeda had boomed...
leader ?Majed al-Majed was arrested four days after the liquidation.?

Majed was reportedly the criminal mastermind of the deadly twin suicide kaboom that targeted the Iranian embassy in Beirut in November 2013. The Lebanese army announced in January that Majed, a Saudi bully boy, had died of illness at the central military hospital in Beirut after being arrested on December 26, 2013.

On Thursday evening, al-Manar television announced that the detainee Abu Abbas had transported ?more than one booby-trapped car? from the outskirts of the Bekaa border town of Arsal to areas inside Leb.

He was also behind sending the bomb-laden car that went kaboom! prematurely at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint before reaching its supposed destination in Beirut's southern suburbs, al-Manar said.

Abu Abbas also confirmed that the Abu Assaf Cafe in Tayyouneh -- where dozens of football fans were watching a World Cup match in June -- was the target of the boom-mobile that went kaboom! several meters away from the popular coffee shop.

Earlier on Thursday, al-Akhbar newspaper said the Army Intelligence captured Abu Abbas in an ?ambush? around a week ago, describing him as a ?hefty catch.?

It said the prominent bully boy leader hails from the eastern Bekaa town of Majdal Anjar.

The newspaper said that the detainee confessed that he transported the suicide bomber of Dahr al-Baydar and Beirut's Tayyouneh roundabout in June.

Sources said that the suspect is the right hand of Sirajeddine Zureiqat, a so-called front man of the Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades.

The detainee also provided a residence for Iraqi woman Saja al-Dulaimi, who was identified as a divorcee of Islamic State

...formerly merely the head of ISIL and a veteran of the Bagram jailhouse. Looks like a new messiah to bajillions of Moslems, like just another dead-eyed mass murder to the rest of us...
.

Al-Dulaimi was arrested at a checkpoint on al-Madfoun Bridge in the North, along with her Paleostinian husband and 8-year-old Hajar, her daughter from al-Baghdadi. The arrest took place last month and was kept a secret until the media put it out to public.

Abu Abbas also confessed to moving fighters between Majdal Anjar, Arsal, the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and the southern town of Shebaa.

He also said that he handed money over to Shadi al-Mawlawi, a runaway Islamist bully boy, several times.

Army Battles Militants in Arsal's Outskirts
[AnNahar] The Lebanese army engaged on Thursday in festivities with faceless myrmidons on the outskirts of the northeastern border town of Arsal, the state-run National News Agency reported.

NNA said the military targeted the fighters with mortars in the area of Wadi Ata.

Front have established footholds in remote mountains along Leb's remote eastern border.

Their threat first came to Leb in August, two months after the group's summer blitz in which it seized large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria.

In a surprise attack, the faceless myrmidons crossed over from Syria and overran the border town of Arsal, hitting Lebanese army positions and killing and injuring scores of soldiers.

After weeklong festivities, the faceless myrmidons pulled back to mountain caves near Syria's border, taking more Lebanese soldiers and coppers with them.

The fighters have since executed four of the servicemen.

Twenty people, including an FSA official, were killed in the festivities that concentrated in the area of Wadi Mira, it added.
