Afghan forces conclude large-scale operation in Kandahar province
[KhaamaPress] A large-scale operation launched by the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces has concluded in Arghistan district of Kandahar province.

According to the local military and security officials "Soldiers and police spent a week in both rain and snow clearing known Taliban

locations in Arghistan district of Kandahar."

The officials further added "During this operation, strikes against faceless myrmidons heavily damaged Taliban strongholds. One of these was a strike against a large IED factory and the Taliban Headquarters facility which resulted in 20 enemy killed."

"As the security forces moved through local areas throughout Arghistan, they received contact with faceless myrmidons which resulted in an additional 5 enemy killed," the officials added.

The Commander of the 205th Atal Corps of the Afghan Military Gen. Iman Nazar said "Although there has been a large Taliban presence in the past, the citizens of Arghistan remain supportive of the police and security forces that protect this area."

"The biggest impact of this operation is that local bazaars were able to reopen to local residents and allow them more freedom of movement in the area," said Arghistan village leader.

"The people of Arghistan support us [the police] and we would not be able to do this operation without the support of the people. We will continue to defend and serve our country." Arghistan District Police Commander

Morocco arrests three Frenchmen suspected of terrorism financing
[AlAhram] Three Frenchies have been tossed in the clink

in the Moroccan city of Sale close to the capital Rabat on suspicion of financing terrorism and having connections with holy warrior groups, police said on Tuesday.

Investigations showed that the suspects had connections with Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (IS) fighters in the Middle East, a statement carried by state news agency MAP said.

The suspects, who were arrested on Monday, were not identified but the police statement said one of them is of Algerian origin.

Compared with other countries in North Africa, Morocco has been largely insulated from holy warrior attacks.

The four main suspects arrested in connection with the killing in December of two Scandinavian women near the tourist hub of Marrakech had pledged allegiance to IS in a video.

In April 2011, 17 people were killed in the bombing of a restaurant in Marrakech.

In 2017 and 2018, Morocco said it dismantled 20 holy warrior cells planning attacks in the country.

Saudi Coalition bombs fishing boat off Yemeni coast, 10+ killed
Al Masdar of course takes a jaundiced view, and therefore does not inform us whether the fishermen were smuggling for Houthis, or the Saudi pilot was indulging in a bit of unjustified target practice.

According to local observers, the Saudi Coalition bombed the fishing boat on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of over ten fishermen.

Another five were maimed and at least eight others were reported missing by the local rescue crews.

The attack by the Saudi Coalition comes just a month after a ceasefire was established by the United Nations

Bangladesh
25 injured in Bangladesh clash
[Dawn] Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at hundreds of religious hardliners who attacked Ahmadis in northern Bangladesh on Tuesday, leaving 25 people injured.

The festivities erupted after days of tensions over a planned convention of the Ahmadi community in the town of Ahmadnagar. The hardliners demanded the event be cancelled.

There are an estimated 100,000 Ahmadis in Bangladesh.

Police said several groups have been holding protests against the Ahmadis’ convention, scheduled to start in just over a week.

"Some 700-800 men wielding sticks and batons marched towards Ahmadnagar and clashed with the Ahmadis," a police official said.

Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to "maintain law and order", he said, adding that 20 police and five Ahmadis were maimed.

The front man for Ahmadi community said seven of its members were maimed, three critically.

The last few decades have seen a number of attacks targeting Ahmadis in Bangladesh.

two alleged former Syrian secret service agents on charges of crimes against humanity committed in Syria. Both men are accused of torture, and one is also accused of murder.

Germany's investigative police force (Bundeskriminalamt) has arrested two alleged former employees of the Syrian secret service in Germany for suspected crimes against humanity while working for the intelligence service in Syria.

Federal prosecutors said the two men, 56-year-old Anwar R. and 42-year-old Eyad A., were arrested by federal police in Berlin and Rhineland-Palatinate state respectively. The arrest of the two men came after French authorities apprehended a third Syrian man near Gay Paree.

Prosecutors said that Anwar R., a high-ranking member of Syria's General Intelligence Service, is accused of participating in the abuse of detainees at a prison he oversaw in Damascus.

As lead investigator, the man allegedly ordered the use of systematic and brutal torture on anti-government activists between the end of April 2011 and the beginning of September 2012.

Eyad A., prosecutors said, was part of a unit that arrested hundreds of activists and brought them to the prison run by the other suspect.

Between the beginning of July 2011 and mid-January 2012, Eyad A. is suspected of helping to kill two people and torture and physically abuse at least 2,000 people.

Both Anwar R. and Eyad A. left Syria in 2012, prosecutors said. Anwar R. has been in Germany since mid-2014 and Eyad A. since mid-2018. Both suspects applied for asylum in Germany.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel Might Expand Covert War Against Iran Beyond Syria In Coming Year or Possibly Tomorrow Morning
[Jerusalem Post] With Iran continuing to entrench itself throughout the Middle East, Israel might have to consider expanding it’s covert war against the Islamic republic over the next year in order to prevent harm to the Jewish State.

Israel has repeatedly warned that it would not allow Iran to establish a presence in Syria and has claimed responsibility for hundreds of air strikes in the country aimed at preventing the transfer of weapons ‐ such as surface-to-air missile kits ‐ to Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as the entrenchment of Iranian forces on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights.

Due to recent Israeli strikes, the defense establishment has noticed a reduction in Iranian weapon shipments through Syria; a decrease of funds available to Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Qud’s Force Commander Qassem Soleimani for his project in Syria; and a decline in militia fighters in the war-torn country.

Iran has also begun moving its assets from areas repeatedly struck by Israel to locations closer to the border with Iraq, specifically the T4 Airbase located between Homs and Palmyra.

It is believed that Iran will attempt to entrench itself in Iraq, a mainly Shia Muslim country, as it did in Syria where they have managed to establish, shape and consolidate a solid parallel security structure.

Israel has until recently refrained from commenting on military activities beyond its borders, believing that by neither confirming nor denying the strikes, Iran would be less likely to retaliate. But in recent months, officials have begun openly discussing the attacks. Before taking off for an international conference in Warsaw on Tuesday night, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was "operating every day, including yesterday, against Iran and its attempts to establish its presence in the area." His comment referred to a strike the day before against Iranian positions in Syria’s Quinetra, right along the border with Israel.

With the help of the Russians, Iranians and Hezbollah, Assad has regained control over the majority of Syria and is rebuilding his army. It is assumed to be focusing first on intelligence and air defense divisions which could pose a threat to Israeli aircraft.

According to Israeli intelligence assessments, the Syrian military might take part in a war against Israel if one were to break out along the northern border.

While there are no reports of strikes in Iraq attributed to Israel, the Jewish state is reported to have been behind an air strike on the Syrian-Iraqi border last year near the town of Al-Bukamal which killed 22 members of a Shi’ite militia.

Southeast Asia
Two militants gunned down in Thai south
[Bangkok Post] Thai security forces killed two militants and injured several more in a gun battle with a rebel group believed to have been behind the murder of two monks in Narathiwat province last month.

The clash broke out Monday afternoon near Ailakho, a village in Chanae district, as troops were searching in forested areas for the group's hideouts. At least two rebels were shot dead and blood trails at the scene suggested "several more were probably injured."

Military spokesman Pramote Prom-in said the militants were located on Monday thanks to a tip-off by villagers. People, including those from Muslim communities, have cooperated with the authorities, forcing the insurgents to flee into the forest and mountainous areas, he said.

Investigators believe they are the same people involved in the murder of two monks at Wat Rattananuparb in Sungai Padi district on Janurary 18. Phra Kru Prachote Rattananurak, the district's chief monk and abbot of the temple, and his assistant, Phra Samu Attapon Khun-ampai, were gunned down there.

Two villagers gunned down in southern Thailand

They were followed by two men on another motorcycle and at one point the pillion-riding gunman opened fire, hitting Arong twice in the body, seriously injurng him. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In Sai Buri district, a villager was found lying dead on a rural road. He was identified as Paosee Lateh, a construction worker. A police investigation revealed that Paosee was leaving his home on a motorcycle, heading for the village, when he was fired at by two men on another motorcycle. He was hit twice.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Air Force launches first airstrikes this month
[AlMasdar] For the first time this month, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) launched a series of Arclight airstrikes across a region of Syria.

According to a military source in Sweida, the Syrian Air Force heavily bombarded the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. ’s (ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) positions inside the Badiya al-Sham region.

The source said that the Syrian Air Force specifically targeted the Khirbat Hosn area at the provincial border of Sweida and Homs; this attack hit an Islamic State sleeper cell that was active in this part of the Badiya al-Sham region.

He would add that many of the Islamic State snuffies that were holed up in the al-Safa region in al-Sweida had managed to escape to this area of the Badiya al-Sham.

Another source in Damascus told al-Masdar that the Syrian Army is having a difficult time patrolling this desert region because of the large number of caves in the region.

Deir Ezzor: ISIS nearly wiped out in eastern Euphrates region as SDF troops capture Baghouz – map
[AlMasdar] The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued their large-scale operation in the eastern region of the Euphrates River Valley, today, targeting the last areas controlled by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. (ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS).

Backed by heavy Arclight airstrikes and artillery, the Syrian Democratic Forces were able to crack the Islamic State’s lines at the town of Baghouz Fouqani and force tens of Death Eaters to surrender.

The Syrian Democratic Forces then asserted full control over Baghouz Fouqani as the remaining Islamic State Death Eaters slipped back to the nearby town of Safafneh.

The remaining Islamic State Death Eaters are now expected to make their last stand against the Syrian Democratic Forces at Safafneh.

With their recent string of losses, it appears ISIS is in desperation mode as some reports indicated on Wednesday that the terrorist group executed several of their foreign members for trying to surrender to the Syrian Democratic Forces.

According to the reports, the Islamic State executed more than 15 members that were planning to surrender themselves to the Syrian Democratic Forces, including 7 French fighters.

Aleppo: Syrian army pushes into DMZ, Al Nusra attacks Aleppo city, Armenians send humanitarian mission

Syrian Army pushing to take over 20km buffer zone in northwest Syria

[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is pushing to launch a new operation to clear the 20-kilometer-deep demilitarized zone that stretches from northeast Latakia to western Aleppo.

According to a government source in Damascus, the Russian and Iranian delegations in Sochi this Thursday will present the case to their Turkish partners.

The source said that due to the jihadist refusal to leave the buffer zone, the Syrian Arab Army wants to clear the area itself and then allow Russian military personnel to deploy to the DMZ.

He added that while the Syrian Army wants to clear the Idlib Governorate of the militant groups, they are willing to negotiate a settlement in which they would just launch an operation to expel all the militants from the buffer zone.

In the past, Russia and Iran have met much opposition from their Turkish partners over a potential military operation inside the Idlib Governorate.

However, the demilitarized zone agreement has ultimately failed and the hostilities are still a daily occurrence in this area.

The only other scenario that could come about is a joint Turkish-Russian-Iranian operation in which they could all clear the demilitarized zone together.

This scenario would most likely be accepted by Turkey because it would allow them to be active in the operation, while also not including the Syrian government forces.

Jihadist rebels launch new attack on Aleppo city

[AlMasdar] The jihadist rebels in southwest Aleppo launched a new attack on the provincial capital, hitting a densely populated district.

According to a military report from Aleppo city, the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham launched a number of missiles into the New Aleppo District on Wednesday evening.

No casualties were reported as a result of the attack.

A source from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) said the attack was unprovoked as their forces had avoided hostilities with the jihadist rebels for much of the week.

US upset over Armenia’s military deployment to Syria

The United States expressed their dismay over Armenia’s recent military deployment to Syria, despite the fact they were invited by the Syrian government.

“We recognize the desire of other nations to respond to the humanitarian situation in Syria, and we share the concerns about protecting religious minorities in the Middle East,” the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.

“However, we do not support any engagement with Syrian military forces, whether that engagement is to provide assistance to civilians or is military in nature,” they added.

“Nor do we support any cooperation between Armenia and Russia for this mission. Russia has partnered with the Assad regime to slaughter civilians and trigger a humanitarian catastrophe. Russia continues to protect the Assad regime and its atrocities on a global stage,” it added in a statement to Armenian media circulated by the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan.

The Armenian military’s deployment was part of a humanitarian mission that sought to assist the war-torn city of Aleppo.

US said to widen ‘secret program’ to sabotage Iran’s missiles
[IsraelTimes] Under Pompeo, Washington has intensified efforts to introduce faulty parts into Tehran’s supply chain, New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

reports.

Alternate headline: Once Again NYT Leaks Key War Secret. They do love their frissons at the New York Times.
The US has escalated a clandestine program to sabotage Iranian missiles and rockets as part of an attempt to weaken the Islamic Theocratic Republic’s military and cause economic damage, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Current and former administration officials told the newspaper that it was difficult to quantify the success of the program. However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
in the past two months Iran has on two occasions attempted to launch satellites in failed tests.

The US says that Iran’s plans for sending satellites into orbit demonstrate the country’s defiance of a UN Security Council resolution that calls on Iran to undertake no activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

According to the Times, the American program started under the George W. Bush administration, when the US began to integrate faulty parts into Iran’s aerospace supply chains. The program continued under the B.O. regime but gradually tailed off in 2017 when it was revived under then-head of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.

Under Obama, the program was widened to target not only missiles but also space launchers.

Tehran says it has reined in most of its nuclear program under a landmark 2015 deal with major powers, but it has kept up development of its ballistic missile technology.

Experts told the newspaper that not all of Iran’s aerospace failings could be blamed on US sabotage efforts as missiles are prone to malfunction during tests.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
the US was able to see the success of the program in one instance when an Iranian-manufactured rocket landed in Baghdad’s Green Zone and failed to detonate. A former bigwig said that when the projectile was dismantled, sappers found a malfunctioning part which had been fed into the supply chain by the Americans.

The CIA declined to comment on the program. The government asked the Times to withhold some details on the operation so as not to endanger it.

The US last Thursday vowed to remain "relentless" in pressuring Iran to deter its missile program after the Islamic Theocratic Republic unveiled a new ballistic weapon days after testing a cruise missile.

Tehran, which calls for the destruction of Israel, insists that it sees the missile program as crucial to its defensive posture, and says its existence is non-negotiable. It has also maintained that it never intended to develop nuclear weapons and therefore its missile development does not violate the agreement.

However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow...
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has presented evidence which he says details Iranian efforts and research programs specifically aimed at producing atomic weapons. In a Mossad operation, Israel last year spirited out a trove of Iranian documentation from Tehran’s pre-deal nuclear weapons archive, which Netanyahu said proved conclusively that Iran is lying when it says it never worked towards a nuclear weapons arsenal.

The Times report comes as Pompeo and Netanyahu were due to meet on Iran at the so-called Ministerial to Promote a Future of Peace and Security in the Middle East. The United States and Poland are sponsoring the conference in Warsaw, which they say is aimed at promoting peace and security in the region but appears to be mainly focused on isolating Iran.

Before departing for Poland on Tuesday, Netanyahu told news hounds that the focus of the conference will be Iran, an issue he said "unites Israel, the United States, many countries in the world."

#4  "The enemy of the people"

Given that the NYT is a major player in the treason space, as the marketing guys say, seems like we could make use of that.

Putting on my Wild Bill Donovan hat:
Suppose we have a low-level file clerk at "the agency" leak to his reporter bar buddy that Under Pompeo, Washington has intensified efforts to introduce faulty parts into Tehran’s supply chain. It certainly sounds plausible. And after all, a little low-level sabotage never hurts, right?

But even if we're not, now every time a power-supply fails, a program crashes, a machine breaks, a tire goes flat, or a dog farts, people are going to wonder "The Americans again?". And why did this happen *twice* on Mahmood's shift at the lab? Suspicion is a terrible thing.

Suicide bomber targeting Iran's Revolutionary Guard kills 27
Tragedies all over the place, even those that come home
[Ay Peee] A suicide car bomber claimed by an al-Qaida-linked group attacked a bus carrying members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard paramilitary force Wednesday, killing at least 27 people and wounding 13 others, state media reported.

Tehran immediately linked the attack in Iran's restive southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province to an ongoing U.S.-led conference in Warsaw largely focused on Iran, just two days after the nation marked the 40th anniversary of its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The bombing also raised the specter of possible Iranian retaliation targeting a Sunni militant group called Jaish al-Adl that claimed the attack, which largely operates across the border in nuclear-armed Pakistan. Recent militant assaults inside Iran have sparked retaliatory ballistic missile strikes in Iraq and Syria.
Could be Baloch Lib Army, could be any number of Islamo-Nutters, or just Mennonites who hate the Ayatollahs and their brutal tools
The bombing Wednesday night struck the bus traveling on a road between the cities of Khash and Zahedan, a mountainous region along the Pakistani border that is also near Afghanistan.
