Haftar's son-led brigade arrests al-Wakwak
[Libya Observer] A brigade led by Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...

Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Yusif al-Wakwak, the brother of Ezzidine al-Wakwak who used to command Benina airport security force, sources from Benina; western Benghazi reported.

The sources added Tuesday that Brigade 106 arrested al-Wakwak over the money seized by Benina airport customs police while he was trying to smuggle it abroad.

The brigade has also called on the family of al-Wakwak to bring back the money which amounts to a million euros so they release him.

On December 26, 2018, al-Wakwak assaulted a police car in Benina airport and took the seized money.

At the time, social media footage showed Yusif al-Wakwak smashing the window of the police car in the airport and taking the money.

Benina airport is controlled by a tribal gangs led by Ezzidine al-Wakwak who is loyal to Haftar, but disputes in the inner circles over the last years made al-Wakwak and his followers foes to forces led by Haftar's son Khalid.

Negad Borai said Wednesday that among those arrested in the past two days is Yehia Hussein Abdel Hady, the former front man of the Civil Democratic Movement. The coalition of secular and left-leaning political parties had called for a boycott of Egypt’s presidential election last year.

He said five activists were arrested on Monday after they attended a ceremony in Cairo commemorating the Arab Spring uprising.

It is not clear if the activists are among 54 people who authorities said Tuesday were detained for plotting to foment chaos on the anniversary of the uprising.

Scores of Houthi fighters killed in failed border attack

The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. fighters were killed on Wednesday morning when they attempted to advance their positions along the Saudi-Yemeni border.

According to local reports, the Saudi-backed tribal fighters were able to beat back the attacking Houthi forces in the Hajour area of the Hajjah Governorate.

Backed by Saudi Coalition Arclight airstrikes, the tribal fighters launched a swift counter-attack against the Houthi forces, resulting in more losses for the aforementioned Yemeni group.

The Houthi forces were attempting to retake several areas they lost in the border province of Hajjah over the last few weeks; however, they have been unable to penetrate the tribal front-lines.

Saudi-led coalition frees 7 Yemen rebels, but issues threat

released seven Huthi prisoners on Wednesday and returned them to Sanaa, the UN said, even as the military alliance said it could use renewed force against the rebels.

The seven Huthis were transferred from the Saudi capital Riyadh to rebel-held Sanaa by the International Committee of the Red Thingy, the UN said.

The office of UN envoy Martin Griffiths said he hoped that the move would give rise to a "rapid implementation of the prisoner exchange agreement" reached as part of a truce deal negotiated between Yemen's Saudi-backed government and the Iran-aligned rebels in Sweden last month.

The ICRC, which is overseeing the prisoner exchange process between the warring sides, confirmed it had flown seven Yemenis to Sanaa.

"Another hope for many families separated by the conflict in Yemen," the organization wrote on Twitter.

But the coalition warned later Wednesday it was still prepared to use "force" against the Huthis to make the rebels abide by the UN-backed truce deal.

"The coalition is prepared to use... force to prod Huthi compliance with (the) Stockholm agreement," a coalition source told AFP.

German police arrest 3 Iraqi refugees suspected of planning terror attack
[DW] Two of the three suspects reportedly tried to build a homemade bomb and considered carrying out an armed or vehicle attack. Prosecutors accused the suspects of planning an "Islamist motivated attack."

Three Iraqi refugees were tossed in the clink

on Wednesday in northern Germany for preparing a terror attack. Two 23-year-olds and a 36-year-old were arrested in an early morning raid in the state of Schleswig-Holstein after a months-long investigation, German police said.

"According to the findings to date, the suspects had not yet selected a specific target for their attack," the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Two of the suspects are accused of preparing a bomb using gunpowder from fireworks and another of aiding and abetting the terror plans. Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said that the suspects had already carried out explosive tests.

Investigators allege the two 23-year-olds, Shahin F. and Hersh F., downloaded bomb-making instructions from the internet and tried to purchase a detonation device from the United Kingdom. British authorities were able to halt the shipment of the detonation device to Germany.

The two accused also considered buying a 9mm handgun with the help of 36-year-old Rauf S., who negotiated with a separately prosecuted man to procure the weapon. However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
Shahin F. and Hersh F. found the handgun too expensive and started considering a vehicle attack instead, prosecutors said. Shahin F. started taking driving lessons at the beginning of January.

Shahin F. and Hersh F. had decided at the end of 2018 that they would "carry out an Islamist motivated attack in Germany," prosecutors said.

"Further investigations must determine whether the accused are tied to any terrorist organization," they said.

Police also carried out raids of homes in the states of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und Baden-Wurttemberg.
Rudaw adds:
They had asked Rauf to procure a gun, but rejected as too expensive a Makarov 9mm weapon on offer from a man identified as Walid Khaled Y.Y. in the statement.

News site Spiegel Online reported, quoting unnamed security sources, that the men had arrived in Germany in the autumn of 2015, at the height of the refugee influx that brought over a million asylum seekers.

One of the suspects had allegedly spoken of wanting to target the largest possible group of "non-believers, but not children", Spiegel Online said.

Turkish court convicts US consulate employee, releases on time served
Kabuki.
[Rudaw] A Ottoman Turkish court convicted a local employee of the US consulate in Adana on terror charges on Wednesday, but opted to free him on time served.

Hamza Ulucay was convicted of "knowingly and willingly aiding an armed terror organization," state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

He was sentenced to four and a half years in jail, but will be released after serving nearly two years. He will be under a travel ban when released.

Ulucay was detained in February 2017 on charges of ties with the PKK and the Gulen Movement (FETO), which Ankara blames for orchestrating the failed July 2016 coup.

He has maintained his innocence and accused prosecutors of fabricating evidence. Prosecutors had demanded 15 years in jail.

Ulucay worked as a translator for the US consulate in Adana.

suspended non-immigrant visa services for each other’s nationals for nearly three months in late 2017 as Washington objected to several arrests of Ottoman Turkish staff at American diplomatic missions. Two other local employees of US consulates are under investigation.

US-Turkey relations also soured over the case of American pastor Andrew Brunson, convicted on providing assistance to terror groups, but allowed to walk free and return to the US in October.

US Chargé d’Affaires Jeffrey M. Hovenier and other American diplomats attended the hearing on Wednesday.

’s close associates during this attack along the Syrian border.

"The Iraqi fighter jets raided the Islamic State’s military positions in the city of al-Ratabeh in western al-Anbar (near Syria borders), killing several terrorists, including five ISIS commanders," the al-Maloumeh report claimed.

The al-Maloumeh report reiterated that the killed Death Eaters were senior ISIS commanders and very close to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

In a relevant development in early December, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) claimed that they captured the deputy of ISIS’s commander, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, during an operation in the Eastern region of the Euphrates Valley.

According to a statement released by the SDF, their troops captured Baghdadi’s deputy, Osama al-Awaid, after conducting an attack on a terrorist cell.

Palestinian teen girl tries to stab checkpoint guard, is shot dead – police
[IsraelTimes] No Israelis injured in incident at A’Zaim crossing, outside Jerusalem

A Paleostinian teenage girl was rubbed out as she tried to stab an Israeli security officer at a checkpoint outside Jerusalem on Wednesday, police said.

According to police, the assailant attacked one of the guards at the A’Zaim crossing east of the capital, in the central West Bank.

"A rapid response by additional security forces brought about her neutralization with no injuries to the security personnel," police said in a statement.

The Paleostinian girl was identified as Samah Mubarak, 16, from the nearby village of al-Ram, the Paleostinian Authority’s official Wafa news agency reported.

She was maimed and later pronounced dead, the West Bank’s Paleostinian health ministry said.

The crossing was temporarily closed following the attack.

Jerusalem Police Commissioner, Yoram Halevi, visited the site and spoke with the security officers on the scene, police said.

"Police are investigating where the female suspect came from, and heightened security is continuing in the area," police said.

Israeli security officials have said that many attacks by Paleostinians, especially women, are driven by personal and domestic issues, more than by ideological considerations.

In some cases, Israeli officials have said Paleostinians appeared to have carried out attacks or attempted to do so in order to be rubbed out by Israeli security forces, as a form of "suicide by cop."

Southeast Asia
Grenade Attack Kills Two at Southern Philippines Mosque
[AnNahar] A grenade attack on a mosque in the troubled southern Philippines killed two people early Wednesday, authorities said, just days after a deadly Catholic cathedral bombing and a vote backing Moslem self-rule.

"A grenade was lobbed inside a mosque killing two persons and wounding another four," regional military front man Lieutenant Colonel Gerry Besana told AFP of the attack in Zamboanga City.

The victims were sleeping inside the mosque at the time of the attack on the insurgency-plagued island of Mindanao, which is home to the Philippines' Moslem minority.

The blast comes as the country was on high alert after a cathedral bombing that killed 21 people at Sunday mass on the remote, Moslem-majority island of Jolo.

The Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group grabbed credit for the cathedral blast.
Not good enough Muslims for the ISIS crowd? They’ll not make that mistake again, or any other either.
Philippine authorities initially said it was not a suicide kaboom, but on Tuesday President Rodrigo Duterte contradicted them saying one of the bombers had blown himself up outside the cathedral.

Besana told AFP it was too early to say whether the mosque blast was retaliation for the cathedral attack, adding police were hunting for those responsible.

The attacks have interrupted the joy spurred by voters' decisive approval of giving Moslems in the south more control over their own affairs, which sparked hopes of quelling long-time separatist violence.

Rebels and the government in Manila have expressed hope the new so-called Bangsamoro area will finally draw the investment needed to pull the region from the brutal poverty that makes it a hotspot for radical recruitment.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
hardline factions aligned with IS were not part of the decades-long grinding of the peace processor with the nation's largest separatist group, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, that culminated January 21 with the resounding approval of a new Moslem led-region in the south.

Jolo, which is home to hardline Islamist factions, is the only area in the southern Philippines that voted against the Bangsamoro. Its leader came out publicly against the region and even asked the nation's top court to halt the vote.

The grenade attack on Wednesday drew immediate condemnation from authorities.

"There is no redeeming such blasphemous murder. It is the highest form of cowardice and obscenity to attack people who at prayer," said regional leader Mujiv Hataman.

"We call on people of all faiths... to come together to pray for peace."

ISIS Euphrates holdout: hundreds flee Kurds, emir killed

In Syria desert, hundreds flee crumbling IS holdout

[PULSE.NG] Red-and-white scarves tied around their eyes, men suspected of belonging to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group sit in the back of a pickup truck in the desert of eastern Syria.

US-backed forces have singled them out from hundreds of men fleeing what remains of the turban group's dwindling bastion on the border with Iraq.

Backed by US-led coalition air strikes, the Syrian Democratic Forces, a grouping of Kurdish and Arab fighters, have advanced against the jihadists, squeezing them into a tiny patch east of the Euphrates River.

The fighting and air strikes have led more than 36,000 people to flee since the start of December, including more than 3,100 suspected jihadist fighters.

On Wednesday, more than 300 men arrived near Omar oil field, where the Kurdish-led SDF separated them into two groups: civilians and suspected jihadists.

The alleged fighters are blindfolded, ushered into the truck and ferried off for questioning by the SDF.

Inside the tent, a few hundred men vetted as civilians sit, some wearing their traditional red-and-white scarfs on their heads.

Most of them sporting the long beard that was compulsory under IS rule, they wait to be trucked to a camp for the displaced in Kurdish-held territory further north.

"All Syrians raise your hands," says an SDF fighter, and just a handful do so.

All the rest, he says, are Iraqis -- mostly from the neighbouring Iraqi province of Anbar.

The men AFP interviewed spoke of a lack of food and medicine inside what remains of the IS pocket, and of bodies lying under rubble in the streets after air strikes.

"There are lots of air strikes," 17-year-old Ashraf Wissam says, adding he lost all his family in the raids.

"The IS fighters are Iraqis, Syrians," says the teenager from the Iraqi city of Fallujah in Anbar.

"We see them in the street, and we run away from them. Any group of people is a target."

Adnan, a 39-year-old Iraqi, says there are still foreigners inside the pocket.

"There are a lot of imported muscle: Uzbeks, Turks, Russians. There are French, but not many," he says.
