A front man for the provincial chief police in Kandahar said nine other police were maimed in Sunday’s attack in Marouf district near the border with Pakistain. The front man, Zia Durrani, said 15 Taliban fighters were killed and 11 others were maimed in the gunbattle.
Durrani said on Monday that the battle lasted several hours after reinforcements arrived.
A front man for the Taliban, Qari Yussouf Ahmadi, grabbed credit for the attack in Kandahar in a statement sent to media.

Yassin Abdille Hussein aka Abu Sumeiya and his wife Fartun Mohammed Guleid were arrested in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
The two are also believed to be accomplices of a key al-Shabaab operative in Mandera, Abdiweli Mohammed Guleid alias Abdiweli Kamaure.
Kamaure is the criminal mastermind behind the November 2014 Mandera bus attack where the hard boyz killed all the non-Moslems on board the Mandera-bound bus.
The couple, from the Marehan clan, emigrated from Gedo region in Somalia and has been operating in Kenya using fake documents.
Police reports indicate that the two have various businesses whose finances are channelled to support al-Shabaab activities.
The 42-year-old Hussein is a contractor who mainly operates his renovation trade in South B and parts of Eastleigh.
His wife Fartun Mohammed Guleid, 41, is a sister to Kamaure.
An inquiry into how they were able to open businesses and operate in the country under false documentation is still ongoing.
Initial reports confirm that the two have been channeling funds to Kamaure for over five years now.
Police said Kamaure joined al-Shabaab in 2007 and is currently the deputy Governor of Gedo Region serving under al-Shabaab head Sheikh Abdirahman Fillow.
He is said to be instrumental in the coordination of attacks by Alshabaab in Bulla-Hawa, Mandera and along the border of Mandera and Somalia.
He also also believed to be behind the deployment of hard boyz to kill teachers and quarry workers in Mandera County.
Kamaure has also been in charge of some of the attacks by the group in Wajir.
Five wanted snuffies from Wajir identified through a police press statement last week are said to be operating under Kamaure’s command.
They are Kullow Yarrow Abdi, Mohammed Ahmed Yarrow, Ahmed Dabar, Mohammed Mohamud Abdullahi and Adan Yussuf Sheikh.
Kamaure is also in charge of a recruitment cell that preys on disillusioned youth from Mandera and Wajir Counties.
He radicalizes them and facilitates their travel to Somalia for training and thereafter their return to the country where they carry out attacks.
Their targets include security Installations and vehicles and other critical infrastructure in the North Eastern and Coastal region.
Security agencies are urging the public to volunteer information that will lead to the arrest of these individuals.
The security agencies have also expressed delight at the quick action of local leaders and the public for their commitment to the fight against terrorism in the country.
They also indicated that they are closing in on the suspects who are still in hiding and urged the public to volunteer any further information that will lead to their arrest.

In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all... , killing at least two people, including a civilian.
General al-Mabruk Sahban, a security bigshot, said the attacker also killed a fighter from Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA) when the vehicle they were driving went kaboom! at a roadblock 90 kilometers east of Sirte.
Earlier in the day, security services had discovered another boom-mobile in the troubled area.
It was not immediately clear what group was responsible for the Tuesday attack.
The attack comes a day after Haftar announced the start of an offensive to "liberate" the city of Derna, which is controlled by terrorist groups linked to al- Qaeda and a coalition of hard boys.

[Dhaka Tribune] Two members of banned bad boy outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) have been sentenced to death and three others to life imprisonment for killing Rajshahi University (RU) teacher Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique in 2016.
After examining the evidence, records and testimonies of the witnesses, Rajshahi Speedy Trial Tribunal’s judge Shirin Kabita Akhter delivered the verdict on Tuesday with three of the convicts on the doc.
The death row convicts are JMB members Shariful Islam, a student of RU’s English Department, and Maskawat Hasan of Bogura’s Shibganj, who also goes by Abdullah and Sakib.
Both of them were the criminal masterminds behind the gruesome murder, according to Public Prosecutor (PP) Entazul Haque Babu. Shariful, who has been in hiding since the killing, was tried in absentia.
The other three convicts are Rahmat Ullah of Nilphamari’s Mianpara, Abdus Sattar and his son Ripon Ali of the city’s Narkelbaria area.
Sattar was out on bail till now while the other convicts are currently behind bars.
In her immediate reaction to the judgement, Prof Rezaul’s daughter Rizwana Hasin Shotovi said: "We are happy with this verdict although it would have been more satisfying if all the accused were awarded the death penalty . We just hope it will be upheld in the High Court and executed swiftly."
"But we want to see runaway Shariful placed in durance vile ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... as soon as possible," she said expressing frustration. "Shariful was the one who planned my father’s murder. But he is still free. This is unacceptable. We wanted to see his trial first."
The defence counsels have already said they would move the High Court against the verdict.
Prof Rezaul, 58, a teacher at RU’s English Department, was hacked to death only 50 yards away from his home in the city’s Shalbagan area while he was waiting for a university bus in the morning of April 23, 2016.
According to police, he was a victim of assassinations orchestrated across the country by bad boys.
Rezaul’s son Sourov Hossain later filed the murder case at Boalia cop shoppe.
Police had submitted the charge sheet against eight JMB members November 6, 2016, more than six months after the killing.
Of them, Khairul Islam Badhan, Nazrul Islam alias Bike Hasan and Tareque Hasan alias Nilu alias Osman were killed in reported shootouts with police in Rajshahi and Bogra in different instances.

[DAWN] Hundreds of protesters clashed on Tuesday with Indian forces on the third day of deadly troubles in India-held Kashmire as the disputed Himalayan territory reeled from the killing of a tourist drawn into the unrest.

"Colonel Naser Humaid Abboud of the federal police was maimed as a bomb kaboom hit his military pick-up truck in Dibis district, northwest of Kirkuk, ... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time... " a security source told Baghdad Today website.
According to the source, "the injured colonel was moved to the Kirkuk General Hospital for treatment."

Nineveh (Iraqinews.com) – Iraqi security forces arrested on Tuesday two Islamic State (IS) militants in Mosul city, a police chief was quoted as saying.
Speaking to Baghdad Today website, chief of Nineveh police Brig. Gen. Hamad Names al-Jabouri said, “the pair were arrested in Sumer district in Mosul as they have returned from Turkey recently.”
“They were wanted by the Iraqi judiciary on terror charges pursuant to article 4/1 of the anti-terror law,” Jabouri noted.
According to Jabouri, the two were referred to the bodies concerned for interrogation.
Mosul (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi relief teams have run into documents belonging to the spot where Islamic State extremists declared their rule in 2014.
Brig. Gen. Kamel Ragi, from a joint team of relief and security forces in the city of Mosul, told AlGhad Press that the team has found “religious books and documents belonging to the Grand Nuri Mosque under the rubble”. He added that “some of the books are of archaeological importance, while documents are essential to the structure’s ownership”.
He said the materials were handed to security forces fearing their loss under wreckage.
The Grand Nuri Mosque was the place where Islamic State supreme leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared the establishment of the group’s rule over Iraq and Syria in 2014.
Islamic State militants blew up the medieval structure in June when Iraqi forces became closer to the recapture of Mosul, sparking condemnation from world heritage agencies. Iraqi troops proclaimed a full recapture of Mosul in July, and a total victory over IS in Iraq in December.

[HAARETZ] Israel will "eliminate" Syrian President Bashar Assad if he continues to let Iran operate from Syria, Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said Monday.
Steinitz told Israeli news site ynet that Assad needs to know it will be his end if he allows Iran to turn Syria into military base in order to attack Israel.
"It's unacceptable that Assad sits quietly in his palace and rebuild his regime while allowing Syria to be turned into a base for attacks on Israel," he said. Steinitz later clarified his comments reflect his personal opinions.
Israeli defense officials are bracing for the possibility of an Iranian revenge attack from Syria in the near future, in the form of rocket and missile launches at northern Israel.
Officials believe Iran is determined to retaliate for the April 9 airstrike on Syria’s T4 airbase, which killed seven Iranian military advisers and members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Iran blames Israel for this attack.

An IDF unit went undercover dressed as civilian Jews out on a hike near the town of Yitzhar, in the Shomron, according to a report in Kikar Hashabbat.
As is their custom, the Arabs from the nearby village of Midama, some of them masked, came out to violently greet the small group of Jewish hikers, as they filmed their attack ‐ only this time the attackers were surprised when the innocent hikers turned out to be IDF soldiers, who were supported by a platoon of soldiers waiting in ambush.
The attackers were captured. No soldiers were injured.

[IsraelTimes] Observatory for Human Rights identifies all casualties from alleged Israeli attack as non-Syrian pro-regime fighters
Eight Iranians were among 15 foreign pro-regime fighters killed in a suspected Israeli strike in Syria on a weapons depot of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, a monitor said Wednesday.
The raid struck the area of Kisweh south of Damascus late Tuesday, the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.
Syria’s official news agency SANA said the army had intercepted two Israeli missiles fired toward Kisweh, with state television ... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
broadcasting images of fires in the nearby area.
"The corpse count of the missile strike has risen to 15 pro-regime fighters ‐ eight from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and others not of Syrian nationality," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.
The monitor previously reported nine pro-regime combatants had died in the raid, without specifying their nationality.
SANA quoted a medical source saying that two civilians had died on a highway linking Damascus with the southern city of Deraa as a result of an kaboom linked to "the Israeli aggression."
Rahman said the strike targeted an "arms depot belonging to Hezbollah and the Iranians."
The alleged Israeli strike came hours after the Israeli military said it had identified "abnormal movements of Iranian forces in Syria" and called for local governments in the Golan Heights to open their bomb shelters.
Videos from the scene, which were posted on social media, showed the moment of the strike’s impact and its aftermath. Surveillance footage showed a blast of white light as the bombs hit, followed by what appeared to be secondary kabooms, supporting the claim that the targets of the strike were missiles. Cellphone videos also showed trucks burning and fires raging in the direction of the alleged Iranian base.
It is not the first time that Kisweh has been targeted. In December, Israel reportedly bombed military positions in the area south of Damascus, including a weapons depot.
Damascus accused Israel of carrying out the strike.
The army on Tuesday night did not instruct residents of the Golan Heights to enter bomb shelters, only for local authorities to open public ones in case of emergency.
A number of reservists were also called up, the army said. An IDF spokesperson would not elaborate on which units they came from, but media reports indicated they served in air defense, intelligence and Home Front Command units.
The Israel Defense Forces said it deployed missile defense batteries in northern Israel and "there is high preparedness of IDF troops for an attack."
Earlier on Tuesday, the US embassy in Israel also prohibited American babus government employees from visiting the Golan Heights without approval in light of the security situation on the border.
"The IDF is ready and prepared for a variety of scenarios and warns that any action against Israel will be answered with a fierce retaliation," the army said.
On Sunday night, Israeli defense officials warned that Iran was planning to retaliate for recent deadly Arclight airstrikes in Syria, which have been attributed to the Jewish state, by having its proxies fire missiles at military targets in northern Israel sometime in the near future.
Security forces were also preparing for the possibility of attempted infiltrations of military bases and communities in the north, Hadashot TV news reported on Monday.
[Al Jazeera] A massive convoy of buses carrying thousands of opposition fighters and their families from the besieged city of Homs arrived in Syria's northern rebel-held district of al-Bad.
Sixty-six buses carrying 3,194 people arrived on Tuesday a day after leaving the town of Rastan, located roughly halfway between Homs and Hama, media reports said.
The evacuation was a part of an agreement reached between several major Free Syrian Army ... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund... factions and Russia, under which the opposition agreed to surrender medium to heavy military hardware in exchange for safe passage to Idlib province and Jarablus city in northern Syria.
Syria's official SANA news agency announced earlier on Tuesday that rebels handed over most of their heavy weapons, including six tanks and three armoured personnel carriers.
The agreement covers the towns of Rastan, Talbis, Teir-Maale, El-Ganta and Houla, all of which lie 10-15km north of Homs.

In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war.
