Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
city has been killed, the ARG Presidential Palace said.

According to ARG Palace, Qari Munib was killed during a counter-terrorism operation conducted on 13th January in Achin district of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
Qari Munib was involved in some of the major attacks in Kabul city, including a deadly attack on protesters in Kabul and attack on Baqir-ul-Uloom mosque in west of Kabul city that left scores of people dead or maimed.

He was also involved in an attack on Nepali security guards in Kabul city late last year.

ARG Palace said the ISIS leader was targeted in line with the President Ghani and National Security Council’s instructions and in join coordination with the coalition forces based in Afghanistan.

The operation against Qari Munib was a part of the ongoing counter-terrorism operations being jointly conducted to ascertain, approach, and target top commanders of the terrorist groups in the country, ARG Palace said.

Following the confirmation of Qari Munib’s death, President Ghani said "Those committing crimes against us, will not manage to flee from the grip of justice. Just will be served either through fair trials or the perpetrators will be targeted by the security forces."

Libya sees new threat from ISIL after defeat at Sirte
[The National] ISIS bandidos Death Eaters have begun attacks on Libya’s oil and water pipelines, posing a deadly new threat to the country, Libyan defence officials say.

The holy warrior group lost its Libya headquarters in the central coastal city of Sirte in December after a six-month offensive by militias backed by US air power, but Libyan officials and foreign diplomats say its fighters have now fanned out across the southern desert into desert valleys and inland hills, as they seek to exploit Libya’s political divisions..

Three separate ISIS groups have been identified based in different parts of the Sahara, and, say officials, they are striking at the country’s vulnerable oil and water infrastructure.

One group is near the Mabrouk and Zalla oilfields on the edge of the Sirte Basin, home to the bulk of Libya’s oil production, with a second south-west of Sirte, near the town of Bani Walid.

A third operates close to the border with Algeria, where French officials say ISIS and other groups including Al Qaeda have supply lines crossing into Chad and Niger. Attacks in recent weeks by this group on electricity infrastructure near the southern city of Sabha have worsened power outages in the capital.

"While [ISIS] no longer controls territory, the fight against terrorism is far from finished," the head of the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Support Mission In Libya (UNSMIL) Martin Kobler told the UN Security Council on Wednesday. "The country’s borders remain porous. Terrorists, human and weapons traffickers and criminal gangs continue to exploit the security vacuum."

American air strikes have already hit one group, reporting at least 80 bandidos Death Eaters killed on January 19 when two US-B2 Spirit bombers targeted two ISIS camps in the desert south-east of Sirte.

Photographs of the bombing sites show that the bandidos Death Eaters were well organised, with dugouts, jeeps, satellite phones and supply dumps.

Meanwhile ISIS continues to hold two enclaves in the eastern city of Benghazi, fighting against the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar
... served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
, the country’s most powerful military commander.

Libyan officials say in recent weeks ISIS has hit pipelines of the Great Man-Made River, the network on which the capital Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
and many coastal towns depend for much of their water supply. Other attacks have hit electricity pylons and oil pipelines.

"They work and move around in small groups," Libyan intelligence official Mohammed Gnaidy in the western city of Misrata told Rooters news agency. "The only solution to eliminate them in this area [in the desert] is through air strikes."

Libyan army bird crashes in Benghazi
Two Libyan National Army (LNA) pilots were reported to have been killed when their helicopter crashed today in an operation against the Benghazi Defence Brigades (BDB) south of Sirte. The BDB claimed it had attacked the helicopter and is reported saying the two are dead. A third member of the crew is missing. In what is reported as the last contact the helicopter had with ground control, the pilot is alleged to have said “we are under heavy fire”. Contact was said to have then been lost.

There were claims this evening, however, that one of the pilots, named as Mumin Al-Drissi, has been found alive. This has not been confirmed.

For his part, LNA air force chief Major-General Saqr Geroushi has denied the helicopter was shot down.

It was involved in a series of airstrikes against a BDB convoy that heading towards the Mabrouk oilfield operated by France’s Total oil. An LNA spokesman has been quoted saying that there were at least nine air strikes on the convoy and that five of the militants were killed and 20 wounded.

The LNA’s helicopter squadron is usually based at Benghazi’s Benina air base.

Yesterday, two people were killed and another 13 wounded when the LNA launched air strikes on Jufra air base some 200 kilometres further south. BDB fighters have been based there, along with Misratan forces. It is thought that the BDB convoy attacked at the Mabrouk oil field today set out from Jufra air base.

Boko Haram kills 7 new army recruits, abducts female soldier
[WASHINGTONPOST] Boko Haram

bandidos bully boys ambushed a convoy of new recruits in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, killing seven troops and abducting a female soldier, the Nigerian military and a self-defense commander said Friday. Nineteen soldiers were maimed.

Thursday evening’s ambush occurred near the town of Mafa, 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Maiduguri. The city in northeastern Nigeria is the birthplace of Boko Haram and headquarters of the Nigerian military’s campaign to crush the seven-year Islamic insurgency that has killed more than 20,000 people.

A military front man, Lt. Col. Kingsley Samuel, said seven soldiers "paid the supreme price" and 19 were maimed in the "fierce encounter." He said other troops were mobilized to pursue the attackers.

An army officer and a self-defense commander said a female soldier was kidnapped from the convoy of new recruits traveling to relieve troops who had long overstayed their rotation in the war zone. The two spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to news hounds.

Arabia
Government claims full control of al-Mokha in Yemen
ADEN: Yemeni government forces took full control of the Red Sea coastal town of Al-Mokha on Friday after weeks of deadly fighting with Shiite rebels and their allies, a spokesman said.

Before the 19th century, Al-Mokha was Yemen’s main port and export hub for coffee grown in the highlands and its historical symbolism meant it was fiercely fought over.

“We have done with the Battle of Al-Mokha,” armed forces spokesman Mohammed Al-Naqib told AFP, adding that the rebels had been forced to flee the town. Another loyalist military source confirmed that government forces were in “full control.”

Tens of thousands of civilians were trapped in the fighting. Many of them had sought refuge in Al-Mokha after fleeing their homes in towns to the south as government forces pushed up the coast.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Jamie McGoldrick, said late last month that “scores of civilians” had been killed or wounded by shelling and sniper fire around Al-Mokha or by air strikes carried out in support of government forces by a Saudi-led coalition. He said most services in the town had ground to a halt, including the mains water supply.

“We are now preparing for the second phase of the battle for the coast, which is to advance toward Al-Hodeida,” the loyalist armed forces spokesman said.

Europe
Hungary comes down very hard on Muslim invaders
[DailyMail] At first glance, the video looks like a Hollywood thriller. Set to strident, aggressive music, it shows a group of muscular men using motorbikes, helicopters and even horses to race across the countryside in pursuit of human quarry.

When the targets are captured, they are wrestled to the ground and their hands bound as the patrol members, in camouflage clothing, stand menacingly over them.

But the ’narrator’ whose voice can be heard over these chilling scenes is not a highly-paid movie star. He is, in fact, a provincial politician, and his message is unequivocal: ’Hungary is a bad choice for migrants.’

This comes one week after ISIS executed six of its own fighters in the town of Margada in northeastern Syria for escaping the battlefield in Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

Mass Graves Found in Western Iraq
[An Nahar] Iraqi soldiers have discovered two shallow graves containing the bodies of people executed by the Islamic State

group in the western desert town of Rutba, officials said Thursday.

"The Iraqi army found two mass graves in Rutba containing the bodies of members of the security forces and of civilians," a captain in the army's 1st division told AFP.

He said the first indications suggested the victims had been executed by IS when the jihadist group took control of the town in mid-2014.

Rutba, a small town of significant strategic value, lies on the road to Jordan, about 390 kilometers (245 miles) west of Baghdad.

The mayor of the town, which was retaken from IS in May last year, said one grave was found on a plot in a central neighborhood that had been used to dump hospital waste while the other was located on Rutba's southern edge.

"The bodies we have seen have bullet impacts... We don't know the exact number of bodies because we are leaving this work to a forensic team but we expect there are about 25," Imad Meshaal said.

Rutba is very isolated in the desert of Anbar, a vast western province that has long been a Sunni Lion of Islam stronghold and has borders with Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, Jordan and Syria.

IS bully boyz have attacked the town several times since the security forces retook control of it.

Dozens of mass graves have been found across areas of Iraq that IS seized in 2014 and have since been retaken by the security forces.

a Paleostinian man in the West Bank Friday evening after finding a handgun and bullets on his person during a routine search, Channel 2 news reported.

Officers posted at the Shiloh Junction, near the Shiloh settlement north of Ramallah, stopped a Paleostinian taxi for a routine inspection. When one of the passengers aroused their suspicions they searched him, and found him to be carrying a handgun and several bullets.

Security forces checked the man’s identity, and found that he was wanted for questioning by the Shin Bet security service.

The man was arrested and taken for questioning.

IDF seizes work permits of family of suspected Petah Tikva terrorist
[IsraelTimes] Army raids home of alleged gunman in central Israel attack; soldiers also arrest Paleostinian smugglers, seize guns.

Security forces raided the West Bank home of a suspected terrorist on early Friday morning, a day after a combination shooting-stabbing attack that left five people injured in the central city of Petah Tikva, the army said.

The Israel Defense Forces confiscated the work permits of family members of the alleged assailant, identified by Paleostinian media as 18-year-old Sadeq Nasser Abu Mazen from Beita al-Foka, a village south of Nablus.

A number of Abu Mazen’s family members were also questioned, the army said.

On Wednesday evening, the suspected terrorist shot up a bus near Petah Tikva’s outdoor market. One man was shot and lightly maimed, while another two women were lightly injured by shrapnel. He then expeditiously departed at a goodly pace, trying to shoot more, but his gun jammed. He was eventually cornered by citizens and stabbed one of them with a screwdriver as they tried to subdue him outside a sewing machine shop.

In addition, the army also locked away
Please don't kill me!
six people in the northern West Bank as part of a crackdown on Paleostinians who illegally enter Israeli territory, normally for work, a spokesperson says. Some of these "illegal infiltrators" have also carried out terror attacks inside Israel.

It was not immediately clear if Abu Mazen had a legal work permit or if he too entered Israel illegally. On Thursday, police placed a gag order on the investigation.

Also overnight, an IDF soldier monitoring surveillance cameras in the Hebron region spotted a suspicious vehicle approaching the security fence that surrounds most of the West Bank.

Troops were called to the scene. Upon searching the car, the soldiers discovered a gun and ammunition inside. The IDF said the weapon was an M-16 assault rifle. However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
a picture of the gun shows that it is more likely a Carlo-style improvised submachine gun, made to look like an M-16.

Though the stock, pistol grip and handguard are similar to those on an M-16 -- all of which are pieces that can be purchased commercially, as they are not involved in the actual shooting mechanism -- the gun seized has a noticeably different type of receiver, one which is far more consistent with Carlo-style submachine guns.

When asked about these differences, an IDF spokesperson maintained that the weapon was an M-16 and said the disparities could be the result of home modifications.

A Carlo-style submachine gun is significantly less accurate, reliable and thus far cheaper than an M-16, which can cost tens of thousands of shekels on the West Bank black market.

Another Carlo-style submachine gun belonging to an alleged Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, member was also located in the West Bank village of Surif, near Hebron, the army said.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli troops picked up 10 more Paleostinian suspects who are believed to have taken part in so-called "popular terrorism," a catch-all term referring to rock throwing and taking part in violent protests.

One person was arrested in Fahma, in the northern West Bank, where troops also uncovered a number of Molotov cocktails and bullets, the army said.

The other nine suspects were also arrested in the northern West Bank, two were from Beit Amin, three from Azoun Atma, one from Beida, one from Utzrin and two from the new Askar refugee camp, outside Nablus.
A Ynet article adds:
An IDF force interrogated Abu Mazen family members at their home in Nablus late into the night. Following the revocation, the family members will not be able to enter Israel's territory.
From another Ynet article:
Palestinian media outlets reported that security forces arrested the father of the terrorist who executed the attack on Thursday in Petah Tikva.

In the early morning hours, two of the terrorist's friends were arrested, as well as another person, who was suspected of driving him into Israel.

SDF hands over villages to regime in Aleppo province
[EN.ZAMANALWSL.NET] The US-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Aleppo province have handed over several villages to the Syrian regime due to a Russian-brokered deal reached Thursday, activists and regime media said.

Pro-government media outlets said the deal will allow people of the villages Tal-Jabin, Hardantin, Marasta al-Khan, Mayer, Menig and Tal-Refat returning home.

Regime public institutions and directorates to be opened and all life aspects to be as before, according to the statement cited by a Russian officer.

SDF controlled villages of Meing, Tal Rifat and others in February 2016, while the Syria regime controlled villages of Hardantin, Marasta al-Khan, Mayer when the oppositions forces withdrew from them following severe festivities with regime forces and allied militias.

80 rebel troops surrender in Homs
At least 82 militants surrendered and laid down arms to the Syrian army in the central Homs province on Friday, Fars news agency reported.

The militants, who operated in and near the town of al-Holeh, surrendered at the Samalil passage.

The government officials are said to have granted pardon to the militants after seizing their arms.

The Syrian government tries to de-escalate the conflict that has been lasting for about six years by granting amnesty to militants who express their readiness to lay down arms and return to normal life.

Earlier this month, at least 100 militants agreed to lay down arms in the region of Wadi Barada in the Damascus province.

Turkish forces target 150 ISIS positions near al-Bab
[al-Manar] Turkish airstrikes and shelling targeting over 150 ISIL positions and strongholds in Syria’s al-Bab have killed a total of 23 ISIL militants, local media reported Friday, citing a Turkish military statement.

According to the Daily Sabah newspaper, the Turkish army destroyed 154 ISIL targets, including shelters, defense positions, command centers, weapons, and vehicles, in the town of al-Bab.

Additional airstrikes conducted by the Turkish forces also hit 11 ISIL targets, including seven buildings, three headquarters, and one arsenal, the newspaper added.

The Turkish military operation in Syria’s al-Bab has entered the final stage. Turkey’s units entered central Al-Bab, the operation is being conducted in coordination with Russia.

Asharq Al Awsat sez the battle ain't going so well:

Ankara, Beirut- The Turkish Army faced a bloody day Thursday in the countryside of Aleppo, in northern Syria, after a Russian warplane accidentally attacked Turkish soldiers while hitting ISIS positions around al-Bab city, killing three of them and injuring 11 others.

The Turkish Armed Forces witnessed other losses in its ranks after five soldiers were killed and 10 were injured in attacks launched by ISIS.

The Turkish soldiers are fighting in the area where Operation Euphrates Shield is active. Euphrates Shield, which involves Free Syrian Army fighters backed by Turkish forces, was launched last August to secure Turkey’s border with Syria against terrorists.

The Turkish Armed Forces said in a statement Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin called his Turkish counterpart President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and expressed condolences over the “tragic” incident.

“Both leaders affirmed their readiness to continue active efforts to advance the Astana [Kazakhstan peace talks] and Geneva processes on resolving the Syrian conflict,” the Kremlin said in a statement.

The accidental attack comes as Ankara is working with Moscow to prevent any confrontation between their forces in the battles raging around al-Bab, the stronghold of ISIS northeast of Aleppo.

Turkey backs the FSA while Russia supports the Syrian regime forces operating in the area.

At the political level, the High Negotiations Committee (HNC) will hold a three-day meeting in Riyadh on Friday to form a delegation that would participate in the Geneva talks next Feb. 20.

Sources assume the meeting would witness sharp discussions between political figures and military factions, in light of their current dispute on the number of representatives that should attend the Geneva talks and whether the opposition delegation should be political or military.

Commenting on the issue, Syrian Coalition Member Ahmad Ramadan told Asharq Al-Awsat: “There is a tendency to include one or two representatives from Cairo and Moscow in the opposition delegation that we hope it would be based on the tripartite principle.”

Ramadan said this principle stipulates that one third of the delegation be represented by the Coalition, the second part by members and factions of the Astana meeting, and the last part by the HNC.

Meanwhile, a political leader of the Fastaqim Kama Umirt rebel faction, Zakaria Malahifji, said opposition factions insist to name nine of their figures in the delegation attending the Geneva talks.

Turkey continues attacking Syrian rebels near Manbij
The Turkish army continues to target positions of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) west of Manbij city in northern Syria. Turkish forces bombed the SDF-held towns of Arima and Kawkali on Friday evening. Local sources reported that the Turkish army heavily bombarded SDF positions in both towns, located about 20 kilometers west of Manbij, using heavy machine-guns and artillery fire.

This is not the first time the Turkish army targets the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in western Manbij. On 17 January, Turkey’s military launched a similar attack, targeting SDF headquarters.

Last Monday, the Turkish army also shelled the Kurdish district of Afrin in northwestern Aleppo, targeting the villages of Maranaaz, Vilat al-Qadi and Sheikh Issa after entering the Syrian territory. The Turkish media confirmed the shelling.

“Turkish army and affiliated terrorists are heavily shelling east Efrin [Afrin] from Azaz city since Monday evening — the attacks continued until the moment,” the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) said in a statement.

Kurdish officials have condemned Turkey’s attempts to build border walls near Kobani, Efrin and Hasakah province, and entering Syrian territory.

ISIS executes 12 for desertion in Mosul

[ARA News] Erbil – The Islamic State (ISIS) radical group has executed 12 of its own militant fighters in northwestern Iraq for trying to flee the group’s strongholds in Mosul city of Nineveh Governorate, local sources reported on Friday.

The militants were reportedly arrested by ISIS guards in western Mosul while trying to flee to the eastern part of the city–which is now held by Iraqi security forces.

“The Islamic State accused them of treason for trying to surrender to the US-backed Iraqi forces,” local media activist Abdullah al-Malla told ARA News.

The 12 jihadi fighters were publicly beheaded in the Zanjabili neighbourhood in western Mosul.

This comes one week after ISIS executed six of its own fighters in the town of Margada in northeastern Syria for escaping the battlefield in Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

ISIS landmines continue to cause casualties in Syria

[ARA News] Serekaniye – Fayiz is a 9-year-old boy from Raqqa countryside who was injured due to the explosion of an ISIS landmine. He was walking alongside his uncle and grandfather in a village in Raqqa countryside when a landmine exploded. Fayiz’s grandfather died during the explosion, and he was heavilyy injured in his leg. The boy was transferred to Sere Kaniye town along with his uncle for treatment.

“They [ISIS] had covered the bomb with stones, so we didn’t expect that explosion to occur,” Fayiz said.

Ayed al-Faraj, Fayiz’s uncle, told ARA News: “I’ve lost my father in that explosion. My nephew and I have survived the incident. We were injured and now being treated.”

Fayiz’s family is not the only Syrian family to suffer from ISIS explosive devices.

The ongoing conflict in Raqqa Governorate has led to a large number of civilian casualties. Many of them are injured in explosions of landmines planted by ISIS militants. The majority of the injured lose their lives before having access to treatment.

Islamic State’s (ISIS) militants have left behind thousands of explosives after being forced by the Kurdish YPG troops and allied Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to withdraw from large areas in northern Syria. Those explosives continue to pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives.

Meanwhile, the local Roj Organization (RMCO), a Kurdish group specialised in dismantling landmines and explosive devices, says that the lack of advanced equipment has been preventing them from carrying out their work efficiently. The organisation has been working on clearing areas liberated from ISIS in northern Syria, by dismantling explosives.

Dilo Mihemed Eli, Spokesperson of Roj Organization, told ARA News: “We’s recently seen many cases of civilian casualties due to the explosion of ISIS landmines. Some of the victims don’t survive due to severity of injuries. Those who survive such explosions mostly end up with a permanent disabilities. In many cases a leg or an arm is being amputated.”

Although Roj Organization has dismantled thousands of landmines in the the past few months, the organisation still needs to make a greater effort in order to clear northern Syria from ISIS explosives.

Toni Mamed, Deputy Chief of Roj Organization, said: “The main reason for the civilian casualties due to explosion of landmines is our limited abilities to clear all areas liberated from ISIS.”

“There are huge areas that need to be cleared of mines, which in some cases exceeds our capacity,” Mamed told ARA News. “It mostly takes longer than usual to clear larger areas, especially with the humble tools we’re obliged to use during such operations.”
