Afghanistan
Gunmen wearing Afghan military uniforms abduct American, Australian in Kabul
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Five gunmen wearing Afghan military uniforms have abducted an American and an Australian in the Afghan capital, Kabul, a security official said Monday.

The two foreigners were taken from their SUV while driving on Sunday night on a main road near the American University of Afghanistan, according to Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry. They are believed to be employees of the university and were traveling between the university and their residence, he said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the abduction.

Sediqqi also added that initial reports show that up to five armed men stopped the foreigners’ vehicle and carried out the kidnapping. The two abducted are both men, he said. He did not reveal any more details except to say that an investigation is underway.

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul issued a brief statement confirming the kidnapping of an American citizen but gave no further details "due to privacy concerns."

Locals Hit The Hardest Over Helmand-Kandahar Road Closure
The closure of Helmand-Kandahar Highway for the past four days - due to the presence of Taliban in parts of Helmand province – has created numerous challenges for battle-weary residents.

A number of motorists said that sometimes they come under attack by the Taliban when they try to use the road.

"We wanted to travel to Grishk district [in Helmand] when Taliban stopped our car and told us to go back. They opened fire on our vehicle," said Samiullah, a driver.

Meanwhile, stranded bus passengers said they have waited in vain for days for the highway to be reopened.

"I am waiting for the reopening of the road for the past two days. I want to meet my family in Kandahar but the road is closed," said Ahmad Shah, a passenger.

"I urge government to reopen the highway and address our problems," said Gul Padshah, another resident of Helmand.

Helmand Governor Hayatullah Hayat said they will address the problem as soon as possible.

"There is no specific problem on the way from Helmand to Kandahar, but Taliban has destroyed a bridge which has closed the highway to traffic. We are trying to address the problem in the near future," he added.

This comes after months of clashes between the Taliban and security forces. According to recent reports, the clashes have spread to the outskirts of Lashkargah city, the capital city of the province.

ANA Soldiers Plead for Food, Weapons in Taliban Heartland
As fierce fighting continues in the volatile southern province of Helmand, reports have emerged that dozens of security force members have been killed while fighting the Taliban.

In a video posted to social media, soldiers tell how little food and water they have.

In the video, the soldier who speaks says they are on the frontline of the battle without adequate weapons and that the little food they get daily, shown on the video, is meant to feed four men.

He blasted commanders and high-ranking military leaders for not addressing their concerns.

"We cannot sleep during the day nor during the night; they do not supply us with enough weapons and soldiers survive only on eating bread. We are battling on the frontline, but others (commanders) enjoy life in air conditioned rooms," said the unnamed solder.

This comes at a critical juncture amid an escalating war in Helmand.

Reports indicate that up to 70 ANSF soldiers have been killed in the past few weeks in battles with the Taliban.

The hard-pressed ANSF soldiers have pleaded for more food and weapons less than a week after the Taliban released a video purportedly showing at least 20 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers who had surrendered to the Taliban in Helmand.

As speculation over the poor leadership of the war in Helmand and other provinces gathers fresh momentum, a number of military experts and members of parliament have said corruption and embezzlement of money in security institutions is the main challenge within the ANSF.

"Issues like these are linked to the actions of some commanders who continue to engage in corruption and sometimes even they are allegedly connected to armed opponents," said senator Mohammad Asif Sediqi.

"How long will these problems continue, this will demoralize the forces, the issue needs to be tackled seriously," military analyst Ainuddin Baig said.

In addition, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) in reference to the video footage said that it will take action and provide the necessary assistance to the troops.

"The honorable minister and myself have seen the video; the minister has issued guidelines to address the issue soon and find out what has really happened," defense ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said.

"I saw the footage on Facebook and I was saddened and shocked to see it," Kabul university student Zabi said.

"They must at least provide the soldiers with necessary weapons and food," another resident Ahmad said.

Security officials have said that insurgents from fourteen provinces have flocked to Helmand in an attempt to take the province so as to move the Quetta Shura from Pakistan to Helmand.

Africa Horn
Huge Blast heard in Mogadishu
A huge explosion was heard tonight in the downtown of Mogadishu’s busiest street known as Makka Al Mukarama road, which links the airport to the palace.

Initial reports suggest that a bomb concealed under a luxury car’s seat exploded on the street on Sunday evening, with other reports say it was a hand grenade. The details of the casualty figures is yet sketchy, as local police officers sealed off the area around the blast site, and launched manhunt to trace the culprits.

No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the bomb attack in Mogadishu, but the Al shabaab militants have in the past carried out similar attack in the city.

UN says attack kills 1 peacekeeper, injures 4 in north Mali
[AlAhram] The United Nations

mission in Mali says at least one peacekeeper has been killed and four others maimed in an attack in the country's north.

The mission said a U.N. vehicle hit an improvised bomb early Sunday in the Kidal region about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from Aguelhok killing the peacekeeper and injuring four others. A second attack, near the U.N. mission camp in Kidal, left no casualties but damaged equipment.

The U.N. condemned the attacks. No group has taken responsibility, but both bare the landmarks of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Though pushed from strongholds in 2013, the al-Qaeda-linked group continues to stage attacks.

Offensive for Sirte enters terminal phase
There are reported to have been four further US airstrikes on IS positions in Sirte today though the Bunyan Marsous media office has not confirmed the raids. The attacks once again apparently targeted sniper positions.

Sources close to the operation were denying that any BM fighters had been killed or injured in the attacks.

The key point being made in Misrata and Tripoli has been that the drive the destroy IS terrorists trapped inside Sirte was entering its final stage.

“The countdown to the final stage of the military operations against Daesh has begun,” a BM statement said today, adding “The operation’s leaders held intensive meetings to prepare for the final and decisive battles to eradicate the Daesh [IS] gang from the city of Sirte”

There has been speculation that the US airstrikes have so far been aimed at knocking out enemy positions away from the main terrorist redoubt in the Ouagadougou Centre. Once IS fighter have been driven back to the centre itself, is being assumed that it will be subjected to devastating attacks.

The US intervention, widely reported to be assisted in targeting by UK special forces on the ground with BM fighters, comes at a time when the dead and injured among the predominantly Misratan militiamen has reached disturbing levels. On 31 July Misrata Hospital said that 340 men had been killed and 1,600 wounded in the assault. However other medical sources have said that the number of dead and injured is in fact higher but they gave no precise figure.

Arabia
Yemini Army begins offensive in Nihm
Aden – Yemeni National Army Forces, backed by the coalition air forces, began a wide-ranged military operation in Nihm district.

The operation called “Liberation is our Pledge” comes as a response to the insurgents’ violations. A Yemeni military source told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the operation has a series of set targets that the forces will aim to execute all.

According to field sources, the artillery of the national army targeted heavily insurgency sites in al-Mabda’a village of Nihm district, west of Sana’a.

National army forces, backed by the popular resistance, also liberated al-Manara mountain that overlooks al-Madid area in Nihm district, one of the largest dirsticts in Sana’a.

The forces are advancing towards the strategic area and according to army sources, Milh village in Nihm was also liberated. Militants fled the area after the heavy clashes leaving behind their weapons and equipment.

Yemeni armed forces media added that al-Houl village was also liberated and a number of militants escaped towards Dabboua were also targeted. In addition, Bani Bareq was liberated; a front which was described as the “center of the battle”.

Other sources mentioned that the national army began advancing towards al-Medraj and Masoura after militias escaped the area towards their reinforcements corridor in Dabboua.

Coalition forces also performed a series of raids on Houthis’ sites in al-Maktaa area and Mehla Dam.

The operation began after the Yemeni armed forces asked the civilians to stay away from sites and locations of insurgents and militias. The forces also warned citizens of allowing militants to use their houses as sites saying that they will be targeted and any act of aggression will be destroyed no matter its source.

More from Al Arabiya:

A spokesman said on Saturday that the Saudi-led Arab Coalition will revive its Operation Restoring Hope after Yemeni peace talks in Kuwait ended in the same day without any real results.

While the operation began on April 21, 2015 and it is still active, “Operation Restoring Hope will be revived again,” Saudi Brig. Gen. Ahmed Al-Asiri, spokesman of the Arab Coalition, told Al Arabiya’s sister channel Al Hadath.

The operation was launched to bolster political and peace efforts but without ruling out the use of force. The operation followed the military Operation Decisive Storm.

Asiri, who is also an advisor to the Saudi defense minister, said Iran-backed Houthi militias considered the ending of Yemeni peace talks in Kuwait as an “opportunity” to expand their operations.

He said after suspending the talks between the two warring Yemeni sides, the Houthis started launching operations on the Saudi borders.

The brigadier general said a fire exchange following an aggression by the Houthis led to the killing of a Saudi soldier on the border, reiterating that the kingdom won’t tolerate such violations.

He added "We have already emphasized that Operation Restore Hope has three fundamental dimensions: military and political, as well as relief and humanitarian. The operation has been suspended to give a chance to the momentum of the talks… and to show full support to the United Nations and its envoy through the truce that has been requested from time to time. This was respected by the coalition and the Yemeni government in the hope of the success of the negotiations"

Asiri said "The point that should be clear to the audience is that the Houthi militias failed in dealing positively with all opportunities that were presented to them by the legitimate government via the UN Envoy. And the militia is now trying to achieve some military gains on the ground. They found themselves in an impasse. the impasse of not achieving any political success or military ones. Therefore the coalition is committed to the support of the legitimate government and its national army in its efforts to restore its control over the majority of regions currently held by the Houthi militias."

He added "At the same time our armed forces and national guards continue their duties in protecting the border of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This is the future that we are working on. The operations of Restoring Hope will be active again."

On Saturday, UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed announced the end of Yemen peace talks in Kuwait, but said negotiation between the two Yemeni warring sides will resume in a month.

The envoy rejected that the talks in Kuwait have failed, and criticized any “unilateral” steps taken by any of the two sides.

But he did not make any further mention of how the Houthis and forces loyal to Saleh on Saturday appointed a council set up to govern Yemen, in a new blow to the UN-mediated peace talks.

The militia alliance announced the creation of the council on July 28, a move denounced by Yemen’s internationally recognized government.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed said previously it would damage the talks and represented a “grave breach” of UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

Kuwait man held for funding Indian Islamic State sympathisers
[Iraq Sun] A 32-year-old man who allegedly funded Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) sympathisers in India has been placed in durance vile
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
in Kuwait, based on a tip off by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an officer said on Saturday.

An NIA officer told IANS that Abdullah Hadi Abdul Rahman Al-Enezi was arrested by Kuwait authorities for sending $1,000 to alleged IS recruit Areeb Majeed and his three associates while they were staying in Iraq in May 2014.

Majeed, a resident of Panvel in Maharashtra, left Mumbai along with four friends on May 24, 2014. He returned in November that year and has been in jug since. He is being prosecuted for several offences.

Majeed, a civil engineer by training, was the first Indian graduate from terror group IS' training school as a fidayeen or jacket wallah.

The arrested IS sympathiser had informed Sherlocks that while he and three other IS sympathisers were in Iraq in early 2014, they had asked their IS handler for some money to go to Syria, following which Al-Enezi sent $ 1,000 to them from Kuwait.

"The NIA had earlier sent a mutual legal assistance request to Kuwait in the Areeb Majeed case in respect of transfer of $1,000 by Kuwaiti national Al-Enezi to him," the NIA officer said.

The officer said that Kuwait authorities have now arrested Al-Enezi, who has revealed that he had sent the $1,000 to Majeed through Western Union which was later used by him and his three associates to facilitate their travel to Syria.

Al-Enezi informed Kuwaiti authorities that he has been involved in financing of terrorism after his return from Pakistain in 2013, the officer said. He also supported terrorist organizations.

Sources said that an NIA team is likely to travel to Kuwait to question Al-Enezi.

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Hamyd Mourad, 20, was originally thought to have been the getaway driver when two Al-Qaeda operatives massacred 12 people around the Gay Paree offices of the satirical magazine in January 2015.

There was a huge campaign aimed at releasing Hamyd, who was then a teenager, with classmates eventually providing an alibi then led to him being released without charge.

But now ‐ in what appears to be another huge failure by La Belle France’s security agencies ‐ Mourad was intercepted in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
on July 28th as he tried to join the Isis caliphate in Syria.

Mourad, who remained on a terrorist watch list in La Belle France, was deported to Bulgaria, where he remains in a detention centre awaiting his return to La Belle France.

Gay Paree intelligence sources told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper that material found in Mourad’s backpack, including a phone and laptop computer, made him a clear 'candidate for jihad’. It added that anti-terrorism prosecutors in Gay Paree had ’opened a judicial investigation in order to issue a European arrest warrant for him.’

The Charleville-Mezieres prosecutor confirmed that Mourad had just finished the first year of a science and technology course at university, had been ’reported missing’ by his family on July 25th.

Mourad was the brother-in-law of Cherif Kouachi, who carried out the murders at Charlie Hebdo with his brother Said Kouachi. The pair used AK47s to assassinate writers and cartoonists whom they accused of insulting the Prophet Mohammed, before they themselves were later bumped off by police commandos.

In the hours after the attack, Hamyd’s name was released as a prime suspect and a manhunt was launched. Hamyd handed himself into a cop shoppe in his home town of Charleville-Mezieres, some 160 miles from Gay Paree, and was held and interrogated for more than two days.

After being released without charge, Hamyd said: ’I was stunned, completely overwhelmed by the events.

’I'm in shock, people said horrible and false things about me on social media even though I am a normal student who lives quietly with his parents.’

ISIS claims responsibility for machete attack in Belgium
[Ynet] ISIS has taken to Twitter to claim responsibility, as is their custom, for the Charleroi attack; assailant has been identified as 33-year-old Algerian living in Belgium since 2012.

ISIS grabbed credit on Sunday for an attack by a machete-wielding man in Charleroi, Belgium, that left two female coppers seriously injured, the group's Amaq news agency said on Twitter.

Shortly before the claim, Belgian prosecutors had identified the assailant as a 33-year-old Algerian, K.B., who had lived in Belgium since 2012, saying that he may have been inspired by terrorism.

The Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office said Sunday, "Since there are indications that the attack may have been inspired by a terrorist motive, the federal prosecutor's office decided to take over the investigation from the district prosecutor's office of Charleroi."

The attacker, who shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) during the assault on Saturday, was shot by police and died of his injuries. He was carrying a rucksack, but no explosives or other weapons were found.

"There are indications that the attack may have been inspired by a terrorist motive," the prosecutors said in a statement. "He is known to police for criminal acts, not for terrorism."

Prosecutors searched two houses in Charleroi after the attack but did not provide details.

Early on Sunday Belgian police placed in durance vile

a man with a machete in the eastern city of Liège, broadcaster VRT reported. It said Liège police had cordoned off an area before detaining the man. It said he was of Turkish origin, did not use the machete and was not previously known to the police.

Belgium is increasing security at cop shoppes after Saturday's attack in Charleroi, Prime Minister Charles Michel told a presser on Sunday. He added that the prosecutors were investigating a possible case of "attempted terrorist murder."

India-Pakistan
Suicide bomber kills at least 50 at Pakistan hospital
[Reuters] A suicide bomber in Pakistan killed at least 50 people and wounded dozens more in an attack on mourners gathered at a hospital in Quetta, according to officials in the violence-plagued southwestern province of Baluchistan.

The bomber struck as more than 100 mourners, mostly lawyers and journalists, crowded into the emergency department to accompany the body of a prominent lawyer, who had been shot and killed in the city earlier in the day, Faridullah, a journalist who was among the wounded, told Reuters.

Sarfaraz Bugti, the provincial home minister, said at least 50 people were killed, and more than that number were wounded, as the casualty toll spiked from initial estimates.

"There are many wounded, so the death toll could rise," said Rehmat Saleh Baloch, the provincial health minister.

Television footage showed scenes of chaos, with panicked people fleeing through debris as smoke filled the hospital corridors.

The motive behind the attack was unclear and no group had yet claimed responsibility, but several lawyers have been targeted during a recent spate of killings in Quetta.

The latest victim, Bilal Anwar Kasi, was shot and killed while on his way to the city's main court complex, senior police official Nadeem Shah told Reuters. He was the president of Baluchistan Bar Association.

The subsequent suicide attack appeared to target his mourners, Anwar ul Haq Kakar, a spokesman for the Baluchistan government, said.

"It seems it was a pre-planned attack," he said.

[IsraelTimes] Officers investigating how East Jerusalem teen got the gun; IDF troops uncover weapons cache in West Bank raid

Police officers tossed in the calaboose
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
a 13-year-old boy from East Jerusalem after discovering a pistol hidden in his room, at an institution for teens from underprivileged families, a police spokesperson said on Sunday. The arrest, which occurred last week, was part of a larger police effort to "locate and seize illegal weaponry," the spokesperson said.

On Sunday, a Jerusalem court extended the boy’s remand, keeping him in jail as officers continue their investigation. The police would not reveal what specific information led them to the teenager’s room in the institution, where along with the pistol, they found two magazines and a carrying case.

Meanwhile in Hebron, the army on Saturday night uncovered a weapons cache containing a 9mm pistol, a Negev light machine gun, ammunition and a "Carlo"-style submachine gun, based on the design of the Swedish Carl Gustav firearm. The soldiers also discovered a counterfeit Israeli identification card, the army said.

In overnight raids, Israeli security forces arrested four Paleostinians for allegedly throwing rocks and taking part in violent protests. In addition, soldiers from the Israel Defense Forces’ Judea Brigade picked up a fifth Paleostinian who "planned to throw a Molotov cocktail at the highway" near Bayt Awwa, west of Hebron, the army said.

Police disarm pipe bomb near Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem

[IsraelTimes] A police sapper disarmed a pipe bomb that had been left in the parking lot of the Rachel’s Tomb holy site in northern Bethlehem on Sunday. The explosive device was discovered by officers outside the religious site, prompting them to seal off the area and call in a bomb disposal unit, police said. After inspecting the device, the sapper “neutralized” it, a police spokesperson said. No injuries or damage were caused by the pipe bomb, the spokesperson added.

Police have opened an investigation to determine who placed the bomb in the parking lot.

Rachel’s Tomb is believed to be the burial place of the matriarch Rachel. It is holy to Jews, Christians, Muslims and members of other world religions. In October, the IDF installed a series of concrete barriers around the tomb, effectively separating it from the rest of Bethlehem.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
IS Group hits US-backed Syrian rebel base near Iraq border
[AlAhram] Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Group (IS) jacket wallahs on Sunday attacked a military base for US-backed fighters near the Syrian-Iraqi border, leaving several dead before blowing themselves up, rebel sources and the gunnies said on Sunday.

They said the dawn attack on the heavily defended military camp near the Syrian al Tanf border crossing with Iraq involved at least one explosive-laden vehicle that rammed the gate of the base which was set up by the fledgling, Pentagon-trained New Syria Army.

Another rebel said the gunnies were not able to storm the heavily fortified camp where large sand barriers have been erected to prevent such incursions and attacks in an area where the gunnies operate with hit and run attacks.

"It's a well defended camp and they tried to storm it but the suicide vehicle was targeted and hit," said Said Seif al Qalamoni, a rebel familiar with operating in the same area. He added that there were at least one dead and several maimed.

Qalamoni said jets from the US-led coalition against Islamic State Group shortly after struck at several vehicles believed to be driven by the gunnies in the sparsely populated desert area.

Amaq, a news agency affiliated to the Islamic State Group, said two suicide bombers had attacked the camp and detonated an car bomb before storming the compound and detonating their boom jackets.

The New Syria Army was formed around 18 months ago using Death Eaters driven from eastern Syria at the height of the Islamic State Group's rapid expansion in 2014.

Diplomats and rebel sources say US Special Forces are training hundreds of fighters from the group in camps in Jordan.

The Tanf crossing, which was captured from Islamic State Group gunnies last year, is a 240 km (150 miles) drive from Syria's ancient city of Palmyra, also known as Tadmur.

Scores of Islamic State Group gunnies moved south into southern Syria and the Tanf area after they were driven out of Palmyra in central Syria this year.

The holy warriors, who control a swathe of territory spreading from Iraq into central Syria, still control the al-Bukamal Syria-Iraq border crossing near Deir al Zour.

The New Syria Army, with the backing of Western special forces and US-led air strikes, launched an attack last June from the Tanf base on al-Bukamal northeast of Tanf.

But the operation, which aimed to capture the town and cut supply lines for the group between Syria and Iraq, failed after rebels were encircled on the approaches of the town after the gunnies mounted a counter-attack.

The New Syria Army's base in Tanf has been hit twice previously by Russian air strikes, even after the US military used emergency channels to ask Moscow to stop after the first strike, US officials say

Syrian warbirds hit rebel positions in Idlib
[ARA News] ALEPPO – The Syrian regime’s airforce on Sunday bombed a hospital in the northwestern Idlib province, causing casualties among civilians, activists reported.

At least 12 people were killed, including four children, and more than a dozen were injured when a Syrian airstrike hit a hospital in the rebel-held Meles town in the countryside of Idlib province.

“The strike caused a huge damage in the building,” local media activist Salah al-Hallo told ARA News in Idlib. “Local rescue teams are still searching for victims stranded under the rubble.”

In the meantime, humanitarian groups called on the Assad regime to halt airstrikes on hospitals and other medical facilities.

“Targeting medical centres means purposively killing civilians. Hospitals are meant to provide medical treatment for people, especially those being injured during the ongoing fighting in the area,” Dr M. Munzir told ARA News.

“Most of the hospitals in Idlib are destroyed due to the war, and we’re forced to install makeshift hospitals in order to rescue as many patients as possible, this amid a sharp shortage of medical supplies,” he said.

According to the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), July was the worst month for attacks on healthcare centers since the beginning of Syria’s five-year-old war.

“There were 43 attacks on healthcare facilities in Syria in July – more than one attack every day,” the SAMS said in a statement said.

Jets pound rebels after breaking Aleppo siege
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian snuffies who broke the siege of rebel-held eastern Aleppo on Saturday in a significant territorial gain came under intense air attack from pro-government forces on Sunday trying to repel the advance which also cut government-held Aleppo’s main supply route.

Rebels have taken most of a large government military complex southwest of Aleppo city in a major offensive begun on Friday to break a month-long siege and are now attacking further into government held territory.

The surprise advance in Ramousah allowed fighters from murderous Moslem areas in western Syria to break through a strip of government-controlled territory on Saturday and connect with fighters in the encircled sector of eastern Aleppo.

But fierce fighting and continuous Russian and Syrian air strikes in and around the Ramousah area mean no safe passage for besieged east Aleppo residents has been established, activists and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Fighters from a coalition of Islamist rebel groups called "Jaish al Fateh" announced the start of a new phase to liberate the whole of Aleppo, saying it pledged to increased the numbers of fighters for the battle it said will only end by hoisting their flag on the ancient Aleppo citadel in government hands.

Jets believed to be Russian intensified their bombing of rebel-held Aleppo countryside and also hit opposition held Idlib city in north western Syria, rebels said.

They released video footage that showed huge flames of fire it said was caused by white phosphorus bombs dropped on the city.

Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
The Scourge of Hama...
wants to take full control of Aleppo, pre-war Syria’s most populous city, which has been divided between rebel and government-held areas.

Assad’s government forces are supported in Syria by Russian air power, Iranian militias and fighters from Leb’s Hezbollah group who have sent reinforcements to shore up the army.

Rebel gains this weekend could change the balance of power in Aleppo, after Assad said a siege by government and allied forces on rebel-held east Aleppo in early July was a prelude to re-taking the city. The loss of Aleppo would be a crushing blow for rebels.

"We have now seized full control of the Ramousah area... We are in our trenches but there are insane air strikes of unprecedented ferociousness. The regime is using cluster and vacuum bombs," said Abu al Hasanien, a senior commander in Fateh Halab, the coalition of moderate rebel groups inside the city.

Pro-Syrian government news channels have mostly played down the rebel gains and say Syrian army efforts have caused rebels to withdraw from some recently-gained areas.

But Lebanese pro-Syrian government news channel al Mayadeen said late on Saturday the Syrian army had "withdrawn from a number of positions southwest of Aleppo and repositioned itself in new defensive lines".

The Syrian military was not immediately available for comment.
"I can say no more!"
As the snuffies took over parts of the government’s Ramousah military complex, which contains a number of military colleges, they broadcast images of the weaponry and ammunition they were taking possession of.

Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly the al Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front, posted pictures of rows of armoured vehicles, munitions, howitzers, rockets and trucks.

The rebel front line is now pushing northwest into western held Aleppo on the edges of the Hamdaniya neighbourhood and a housing estate called the 3,000 project, rebels and the Observatory said.

North of Hamdaniya in the direction of the rebels’ push is another large government military complex, the Assad military engineering academy.

The opposition Syrian National Coalition (SNC) congratulated rebels on making "spectacular gains (which send) a clear message to the Assad regime, Iran and Russia that they will not be able to defeat the Syrian people or dictate the terms of a settlement."

Iran executes nuclear scientist reputed to have spied for U.S.
[POLITICO] The Iranian government has executed a nuclear scientist who was believed to have cooperated with U.S. intelligence but who returned to Iran after claiming he had been kidnapped and tortured by the CIA.
Apparently the Iranians didn't believe him...
The tale of Shahram Amiri was one of the stranger sagas to emerge from Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another John C. Calhoun ...
's tenure as secretary of state, testing her diplomatic skills in highly sensitive circumstances. His death comes just over a year after Iran and the U.S. struck a deal aimed at reining in Iran's nuclear program, an agreement Clinton was instrumental in launching.

State-controlled Iranian media on Sunday confirmed Amiri's execution, quoting an Iranian judiciary front man as saying that Amiri "provided the enemy with vital information of the country." His family told the BBC his body had rope marks, indicating he had been hanged, apparently in the past week.

Amiri went missing in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
in May or June 2009 while on religious pilgrimage to Mecca. In the following months, Iranian officials accused the U.S. of abducting him. The State Department claimed for months that it "had no information" on Amiri.

The Iranian resurfaced publicly on June 7, 2010, in a pair of Internet videos. In one, he claimed he'd been kidnapped by the CIA during his pilgrimage and was being held in Tucson, Arizona, where he had been subject to torture and psychological pressure. In the other, he claimed he was in the U.S. to further his education and was free and safe.

Amiri appeared in a third video, posted June 29, 2010, in which he said he'd escaped U.S. custody and had reached Virginia. Two weeks later, Amiri walked into the Pak Embassy in Washington, D.C., which houses an Iranian interests section, and said he wanted to return to Iran.

Clinton confirmed at that point, during a news conference, that Amiri had been present in the U.S., saying he arrived "of his own free will and he is free to go. These are decisions that are his alone to make."

When he did land in his native country on July 15, 2010, he was given a hero’s welcome, and Iranian officials cast him as a double agent, claiming he had infiltrated U.S. intelligence and that Iran had the upper hand in an intelligence war. But soon after returning home, Amiri was taken into custody, presumably imprisoned because of his dalliance with the U.S.

The CIA and the State Department declined to comment for this story, and the White House said it had no immediate comment. But the U.S. was clearly embarrassed over the drama as it played out six years ago, not to mention unhappy about the public window it offered into the high-stakes spy battles between Washington and Tehran over the latter's nuclear program.

Kaine Defends Iran Payment: We ‘Paid a Portion of the Claim and We Got Hostages Home'
[Breitbart] Sunday on on NBC’s "Meet the Press," while commenting on the $400 million dollar payment to Iran by the White House at the same time American hostages were released, Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) bragged the U.S. government had "bargained it down to a fraction and paid a portion of the claim" and added "we got hostages home."

Kaine said, "Chuck, here is the only thing new about this. This arrangement, the settlement of a claim with Iran, the payment of a portion of that settlement, hostages coming home, thank God. This was brief to Congress and the American public months ago. The only thing new this week, the only thing new is Donald Trump’s claiming to have seen a non-existent video of cash being given to the Iranians."

He continued,"I understand why Donald Trump is trying to make something out of it but look, you have two important issues. The first one is there was a legitimate claim against the United States. The United States bargained it down to a fraction. We’re making claims in international tribunals and we are having claims made against us all the time. We bargained it down to a fraction and paid a portion of the claim, and we got hostages home. Both of those things are appropriate. I understand why Trump is trying to make something out of it, but there’s just no there there."

When asked if it looked like a ransom, Kaine said, "No, absolutely not. We don’t pay for hostages. We don’t negotiate for hostages, absolutely not. We’re a nation of laws and if there is a claim we think we owe something on, we try to bargain the best way we can."

But this sure makes it formal that the US government from now on will be involved. I wouldn't be surprised if both sides knew from the beginning that it would be this way. I can't imagine what Obean could have done to make things worse than he has for every facet of this interaction. And I have a feeling this interaction still has some loose ends that need tying up . . . .

The hikers were a while back, Bobby. They were eventually returned, as I recall. The ones that were traded as part of President Obama's clever negotiation were mostly dual citizens who

1. had gone there to visit relatives,
2. were journalists sent for their language skillz, or
3. went there to do good works, eg. Christian ministers.

The CIA contractor is still there, I believe, and a new set of hostages has been picked up from the categories above.
